Plant height and heading time are important agronomic traits that significantly contribute to the improvement of wheat adaptability and yield. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of phenotypic variability of these two traits in a collection of wheat species originating from 20 countries, to analyse its molecular diversity based on the microsatellite loci associated with the previously mapped quantitative trait loci, and to estimate potential of microsatellites to detect polymorphism in different wheat species and reveal allelic patterns in relation to the geographical origin. The significant differences in plant height and heading time among different wheat groups were observed, while the differences in means among three different growing seasons were significant only for heading time. The principal coordinate analysis distinguished wheat genotypes by their origin and ploidy level. Wheat varieties from America, South and Southeast Europe, and West and Central Europe had the highest molecular diversity, as was evidenced by the higher number of alleles, number of group-specific alleles, Shannon's information index and gene diversity. The Nei's genetic identity indicated genetic similarity of geographically distinct groups, such as South and Southeast Europe and Russian (0.901) and South and Southeast Europe and American genotypes (0.638). The studied collection with high observed level of both phenotypic and molecular diversity for plant height and heading time may be a valuable source of variation for wheat breeders to fine adjust these traits to achieve better agronomic performance in certain local environments. Recent feline behavioral research, spearheaded by Scott and Florkiewicz (2023), has made groundbreaking strides in decoding the complexity of cat communication. The study meticulously cataloged 276 facial expressions, each intricately linked to a broad spectrum of the cats’ emotional states and communicative intents. This extensive array of expressions, which includes a “play face” akin to those ob­served in other species, signifies a depth of social interac­tion previously unacknowledged in domestic cats. Nedavne raziskave mačjega vedenja, ki sta jih vodili Scott in Florkiewicz (2023), so naredile prebojne korake v dešifrira­nju kompleksnosti komunikacije mačk. Študija je natančno katalogizirala 276 izrazov obraza, vsak tesno povezan s ši­rokim spektrom čustvenih stanj in komunikacijskih name­nov mačk. Ta obsežen nabor izrazov, ki vključuje »igralni obraz«, podoben tistim, opaženim pri drugih vrstah, ozna­čuje globino socialne interakcije, ki prej ni bila priznana pri domačih mačkah.

Dosadašnji načini kontrole uzročnika bolesti koji, među ostalim, podrazumijevaju uporabu fungicida prema novim zakonodavnim okvirima i novim strategijama u biljnom zdravstvu nailaze na sve veće restrikcije. Pronalaženje nekemijskih sredstava za zaštitu usjeva od biološki preparat, Fusarium graminearum, pšenica, zrnobolesti je od velikog interesa za poljoprivrednu proizvodnju, stoga je u našem istraživanju ispitan učinak novog biološkog preparata (BP) za kontrolu gljive Fusarium graminearum na klijancima pšenice. Biološki preparat primijenjen je na tri različita načina: inokulacijom zrna pšenice, zalijevanjem, te inokulacijom zrna i zalijevanjem. Utvrđeno je kako se intenzitet bolesti primjenom BP smanjuje, a najbolji rezultati dobiveni su inokulacijom zrna prije sjetve dok je zalijevanje površine BP polučilo slabije rezultate. Također, ukoliko je zrno već tretirano biološkim preparatom dodatna aplikacija zalijevanjem nije bila opravdana ni s ekološkog ni s ekonomskog aspekta.

Selen (Se) je mikronutrijent koji se u prirodi pojavljuje u tragovima, ali u brojnim organskim i anorganskim oblicima. Primijenjen u odgovarajućim koncentracijama ima brojne pozitivne učinke na organizme, dok izloženost prekomjernim koncentracijama Se vodi ka toksičnosti i oksidacijskom stresu. Količina Se koja se dnevno unosi prehranom odraz je zastupljenosti elementa u tlu. Na svjetskoj razini prevladavajući je udio područja siromašnih Se, stoga se pojavljuje i velik broj oboljelih od malnutricije. Obećavajuće rješenje problema je biofortifikacija usjeva, ponajprije pšenice, jedne od najzastupljnijih žitarica u prehrani ljudi. Biofortifikacija usjeva poboljšava kvalitetu prehrambenih proizvoda uslijed povećanja koncentracije bioraspoloživog Se, a na područjima siromašnim Se najčešći izbor je agronomska biofortifikacija.

Among the many challenges agriculture faces today, the main one remains the issue of agricultural plant adaption to the expected trends of climate change. As predicted by climate models, this phenomenon is expected to increase the frequency and magnitude of extreme climatic events. This implies that more intense and prolonged rainy as well as dry periods are likely to strike the globe. Albania is projected to be one of the most affected countries by this phenomenon, as compared to the other countries in Europe and Central Asia. Albania recently faced this type of extreme event, in autumn 2010, when vast arable lands were inundated. Under these conditions, the planting of the wheat culture in the central part of the country had to be postponed until the first days of January 2011, when we planted several wheat varieties irradiated with gamma rays aiming at genetic improvement by means of the mutation induction approach. Given these conditions, one of the main goals of our study became the selection of genetic lines that were less influenced by forced late planting. Following this idea, the next year the seeds of the first generation were again planted in the first days of January 2012. In this paper we will present the performance of some physiological, biometric and yield elements of the LB7 variety whose irradiated variants seem to have performed better than control plants. For comparison purposes, we are also going to use control and irradiated plants planted in Lushnja plots during the first days of December, which is considered the normal planting time. Pandemija virusa SARS-CoV-2 je popolnoma presenetila celotni svet. V zelo kratkem času je bilo potrebno reorganizirati zdravstveni sistem v celoti. Bolnišnice, ki sprejemajo bolnike s covidom-19, je bilo treba čez noč prestrukturirati v del bolnišnice za bolnike s covidom-19 in v del bolnišnice z ostalimi bolniki, ki nimajo covida-19. Pri delu s kirurškim bolnikom s covidom-19 je potrebna predvsem popolna in dosledna uporaba zaščitnih sredstev, da ne pride do okužbe zdravstvenega osebja. Prav tako je potrebna posebna klinična pot znotraj bolnišnic, da ne pride do kontaminacije v delu bolnišnice, ki je brez bolnikov s covidom-19. Začasno so bile odpovedane vse elektivne kirurške obravnave. Zdaj se pod posebnimi pogoji za zaščito zdravstvenih delavcev in bolnikov ponovno sproščajo. Pred elektivnimi kirurškimi posegi se priporoča jemanje brisov na covid-19, vendar to ni nujno. Brisi so namreč v 30 % negativni oz. nezanesljivi in se nanje ne moremo popolnoma zanesti. Predvsem je pomembno, da bolnik v zadnjih 14 dneh ni imel znakov prehladne bolezni in prav tako ne člani njegove družine. Znotraj ustanove se moramo vesti do vsakega sprejetega bolnika, kot da je lahko okužen z virusom SARS-CoV-2. Enako velja za osebje. Ravnati se je potrebno glede zaščitnih ukrepov tako, kot da je vsak od zaposlenih okužen z virusom SARS-CoV-2.

Fuzarijska palež klasova (FHB) pšenice ekonomski je značajna bolest koja može imati nepovoljne posljedice na prinos i kvalitetu pšenice. Do danas ne postoji mjera zaštite koja osigurava potpunu zaštitu usjeva pšenice, ali kombinacija više mjera može dati dobre rezultate. Učinkovitost svake pojedine mjere pod utjecajem je okolišnih uvjeta koji prevladavaju tijekom vegetacijske sezone, a učinkovitost će ovisiti i o osjetljivosti pojedine sorte na FHB. Sve veći broj istraživanja potvrđuje kako je integrirana zaštita bilja (IZB) ključ za što uspješniju borbu protiv FHB-a. Kako bi primijenjene mjere zaštite bile što uspješnije, od iznimne je važnosti dobro poznavati uzročnika bolesti, njegov životni ciklus i ekologiju. Budući da je F. graminearum dominantni uzročnik FHB-a na području Republike Hrvatske, osobiti naglasak je stavljen na sve dostupne mjere zaštite u njegovu suzbijanju.

Age is considered the strongest risk factor, albeit abnormal biomechanics, morphology, congenital abnormality, deformity, malalignment, limb-length discrepancy, lifestyle, and injury may further increase the risk of the development and progression of osteoarthritis as well. Pain and loss of function are the main clinical features that lead to treatment. Although early manifestations of osteoarthritis are amenable to lifestyle modification, adequate pain management, and physical therapy, disease advancement frequently requires surgical treatment. The symptomatic progression of osteoarthritis with radiographical confirmation can be addressed either with arthroscopic interventions, (joint) preservation techniques, or bone fusion procedures, whereas (joint) replacement is preferentially reserved for severe and end-stage disease. The surgical treatment aims at alleviating pain and disability while restoring native biomechanics. Miscellaneous surgical techniques for addressing osteoarthritis exist. Advanced computer-integrated surgical concepts allow for patient personalization and optimization of surgical treatment. The scope of this article is to present an overview of the fundamentals of conventional surgical treatment options for osteoarthritis of the human skeleton, with emphasis on arthroscopy, preservation, arthrodesis, and replacement. Contemporary computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery concepts are further elucidated.

The most important photosynthesis acceptor – leaf area vary among cultivation measures and it is limited factor for creating exact growth models in common winter wheat. The objective of this study was to investigate changes of leaf area index (LAI) affected by agricultural treatments – 4 sowing rates and 9 nitrogen treatments based on fertilising rates, target values based on soil mineral nitrogen and plant sap tests target values including different varieties. Increasing sowing rates from 350 to 800 viable seeds m-2 increased LAI at EC 75 stage from 2.9 to 5.5, where LAI 4.1 at 500 seeds m-2 did not vary between lower and higher rates; also at EC 85 stage LAIs did not differ significantly. At EC 75 stage LAI differed among control and nitrogen treatments from 1.0 to 6.5 and at EC 85 stage from 0.1 to 2.4, with differences in interaction among varieties. Higher nitrogen rates for first and second top dressing increased LAI in both stages compared without dressing treatments. Due to significant differences among LAI as consequence of production system, we suggest to take this into account in every prediction and modelling of growth in winter wheat.

Prikazanom analizom kretanja proizvodnje, zemljišnih kapaciteta i potrošnje pšenice u Hrvatskoj u dosadašnjem, te projekcijom u budućnosti, pokušali smo naznačiti mogućnosti koje se pružaju u proizvodnji i potrošnji pšenice, a koje treba uvažavati prilikom određivanja mjera agrarne politike. U istraživanju primjenom opisanih prognostičkih funkcija izvršena je projekcija prinosa, površina i ukupna proizvodnja pšenice, te smo došli do sljedećih spoznaja. Analiza proizvodnje pšenice u retrospektivnom razdoblju pokazala je da društveni sektor (poslovni subjekti) ima čvršću orijentaciju u proizvodnji pšenice od individualnih proizvođača. U razdoblju prognoze takva se tendencija nastavlja, ali u blažem obliku, što daje garanciju da neće doći do značajnijeg smanjivanja površina pod pšenicom. Prema tome požete površine pod pšenicom na kraju razdoblja prognoze iznosile bi 288.000 ha, što je svega 10% manje nego u retrospektivnom razdoblju. Prognoza prinosa i proizvodnja pšenice pokazuje da se do kraja prognostičkog razdoblja (2010. godina) može očekivati prosječan prinos od 5,78 tona po hektaru, što je još dosta ispod genetskog potencijala rodnosti pšenice, ali na razini prinosa razvijenih zemalja Europe. Pored zemljišne politike, ekonomskih i drugih mjera agrarne politike i navedenih prosječnih prinosa moguće je do 2010. godine proizvesti 1,667 tisuća tona pšenice, što predstavlja dvostruko više od proizvodnje u godinama rata i poslije rata.

Skrb za ohranjanje narave, v ožjem smislu tudi genskih virov, ne sme biti prepuščena posameznikom ali posameznim ustanovam, ampak je potrebno ta problem reševati na regionalni, nacionalni in mednarodni ravni. S tem namenom je bila ustanovljena leta 1974 organizacija IBPGR (sedaj Bioversity International), ki je samostojna inštitucija, povezana s FAO ter podobnimi organizacijami po celem svetu in skrbi za ohranjanje svetovnih genskih virov. Pod njenim okriljem so bili za posamezne vrste izdelani tudi deskriptorji, po katerih se genski material opisuje in vrednoti. To je eden od razlogov, da so se leta 1996 v Sloveniji posamezne zbirke, ki hranijo kmetijske rastline združile in dobile status nacionalnega pomena z imenom Slovenska rastlinska genska banka. Del tega je tudi Genska banka kmetijskih rastlin Oddelka za agronomijo Biotehniške fakultete, ki jo sestavljajo štiri genske banke povečini domačih vzorcev ajde (navadna in tatarska), koruze (populacije in iz njih vzgojene linije), sadnih rastlin (jablane, hruške in orehi) ter trav in metuljnic (rod Lolium, Dactylis in Trifolium). Kljub temu, da se skrbi za različne rastlinske vrste, ima genska banka nekaj skupnih organizacijskih značilnosti. Način in razmere hranjenja so podobne, ne glede na rastlinsko vrsto. Tako se vzorci semen hranijo ex situ - izven naravnega okolja v hladilnikih. Sadne vrste se hranijo ex situ v obliki nasadov. Delo genske banke je osredotočeno na pravilno hranjenje vzorcev, zbiranje (kolekcioniranje) vzorcev, obnavljanje in razmnoževanje semen, vzdrževanje in zasaditev novih nasadov sadnih rastlin. Med glavnimi nalogami je tudi zbiranje osnovnih (pasport) podatkov o vzorcih, opisovanje in vrednotenje zbranih podatkov po mednarodnih deskriptorjih, sodelovanje med genskimi bankami ter dosegljivost zbirke oz. vzorcev. Razlogi za zbiranje vzorcev in ustanavljanje genske banke ter aktivnosti imajo nekaj skupnih značilnosti, predvsem rešiti genski material pred propadom, vsaka zbirka pa ima specifičnosti, po katerih je tudi razpoznavna.

Heterozo najpogosteje povezujemo s superiornostjo prve filialne generacije nad parentalno. Z gospodarskega stališča pa je še posebej pomembno, da se lahko ta superiornost izraža kot višji produktivni potencial sorte. Zaradi počasne rasti višine povprečnega pridelka zrnja navadne pšenice (Triticum aestivum L.) na svetovni in državni ravni, je uporaba hibridov pri tej gospodarsko pomembni poljščini vedno bolj pomembna. Pogoj za pridelavo hibridnega semena je tujeprašnost, ki jo je pri navadni pšenici možno doseči z indukcijo moške sterilnosti. V preteklosti so bili za indukcijo moške sterilnosti v materni komponenti hibridne sorte predlagani pristopi, kot je uporaba moško sterilne citoplazme (CMS sistem) prenesene iz Triticum timopheevi Zhuk.. Zaradi svoje kompleksnosti se pristopi na genetski osnovi v praksi niso nikoli dovolj uveljavili. Danes omogočajo sredstva za kemično hibridizacijo razvoj hibridnih sort, ki presegajo pridelek zrnja standardnih linijskih sort tudi za več kot dvajset odstotkov. Alternativo kemični indukciji moške sterilnosti predstavljajo transgeni pristopi. Pridelava hibridnega semena navadne pšenice je tehnološko zahteven postopek o gospodarski upravičenosti katerega odločajo raven heteroze, višina pridelka hibridnega semena na enoto površine in prodajna cena pšenice.

Background: Atraumatic, idiopathic, avascular necrosis of carpal scaphoid – Preiser’s disease is a very rare disease. Since the condition is so uncommon there is no clear therapeutic recommendation.Methods: A 15 year’s follow-up of a patient with complete avascular necrosis of the scaphoid is presented. He was treated with subtotal excision of scaphoid and four corner arthrodesis. The patient was invited for a control three and fifteen years after surgery. Range of movement, grip power, pain and satisfaction with the procedure was measured with the Mayo Wrist Score (MWS). Functional ability of his arm was measured with Dissability of Arm and Shoulder (DASH).Results: Independent examiner measured his functional ability with MWS where he got 65 points out of 100. The patient fulfilled DASH questionary where he gained 6.6 points (0 is the best, 100 is the worst). Results didn’t change between the control three and fifteen years after surgery.Conclusions: Similary to some other authors we concluded that four corner arthrodesis is a reliable procedure for advanced stages of Preiser’s disease.

This study examined the uptake, translocation, distribution and accumulation of Cd, Zn and Fe and the interaction of these elements in winter wheat. The objectives were: (1) to characterise specificity among winter wheat genotypes in terms of accumulation of Cd, Zn and Fe in various organs and identify genotypes combining low accumulation of Cd with high accumulation of Zn and/or Fe, (2) to determine genetic specificity of winter wheat genotypes in terms of translocation of Cd, Zn and Fe from the vegetative parts to the grain, and (3) elucidate an effect of soil cadmium contamination on the distribution and accumulation of Cd, Zn and Fe in various organs of wheat. In the 2007/2008 vegetation season, 52 winter wheat varieties (34 Croatian, 7 Austrian, 5 Hungarian, 3 French and one variety of Russian, Italian and German descent) were investigated. The pots were arranged, according to a completely randomized design with two levels of soil Cd contamination (0 and 20 mg kg-1 soil) in four replicates. In the vegetation season of 2008/2009 the experiment was set up to a completely randomized block design with 10 varieties of wheat and three levels of soil Cd contamination (0, 2 and 5 mg kg-1 soil) in four replicates. The concentration of Cd, Zn and Fe in the solution of plant samples was determined by ICP-OES. The concentration of Cd, Zn and Fe was determined at the flowering stage in the root, stem,leaves, flag leaf and spike and in a full maturity in the straw, leaves, glumes and grain. Collected data were statistically analyzed with SAS software 9.1.3. Analysis of variance identified a statistically significant difference in the concentrations of Cd, Zn and Fe in vegetative parts and grain between the tested wheat varieties at all levels of soil Cd contamination. It was also found that the soil Cd contamination had a significant effect on the accumulation of Cd in grain while the accumulation of Zn and Fe in the grain hasn’t been influenced by soil Cd contamination. The tested genotypes differed significantly in the Cd, Zn and Fe plant uptake factor as well as in the coefficient of translocation from roots to stems and from roots to the flag leaf. According to correlation coefficient between the concentrations of Cd, Zn and Fe in the grain, the tested cultivars were divided into six groups which differ in the interrelation of these elements. Obtained results may serve as a starting point for investigation of the mechanisms of uptake, translocation and accumulation of Cd, Zn and Fe in winter wheat as well as for the selection of genotypes with increased concentrations of Zn and Fe and decreased Cd concentration in the grain.

Weendsko analizo, vsebnost rudninskih snovi in aminokislinsko sestavo smo opravili na definiranih vzorcih žit in koruze, pridelanih v Sloveniji leta 1997. Analizirali smo pet sort pšenice: pinka, ana, marija, rezka in žitarka; dve sorti ozimnega: alpha in robur ter dve sorti jarega ječmena: rex in gotic; tri sorte ovsa: valiant, pram in leanda in pet hibridov koruze: fanion, dea, helga, alberta in lotus. Pri pšenici in ječmenu smo ugotovili majhne razlike med posameznimi sortami v kemični sestavi. Pri ovsu izstopa sorta valiant po manjši vsebnosti surovih beljakovin in surovih maščob ter večji vsebnosti surove vlaknine. Pri koruzi pa odstopa hibrid fanion po večji vsebnosti surovih beljakovin in surovih maščob. Povprečne vrednosti posameznih hranljivih snovi v žitih, pridelanih v Sloveniji, se razlikujejo od literaturnih podatkov. Največja razlika je manjša vsebnost surovih beljakovin. V vsebnosti posameznih rudninskih snovi (P, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Zn in Mn) med sortami istega žita ni opaziti velikih razlik in povprečne vrednosti se dokaj dobro ujemajo z literaturnimi podatki, razen precej manjše vsebnosti natrija. Aminokislinska sestava beljakovin posameznih sort istega žita oz. koruze je podobna. V primerjavi z literaturnimi podatki smo ugotovili nekoliko večje koncentracije nekaterih esencialnih aminokislin v beljakovinah žit.
