The subject of this study is the role of drone journalism as a new field within journalism. Drone journalism has emerged due to the rapid development of new communication technologies, making it crucial to define the role of drone technology in journalism. This study aims to investigate journalists' perspectives on drone technology and its effects on their professional lives. The research examines how journalists use drone technology, its contributions to their journalistic processes, and the challenges they face in detail. A qualitative paradigm was adopted for this study, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews within a phenomenological design. The data obtained were analyzed using thematic analysis with MAXQDA qualitative data analysis software. Due to resource and time constraints, the study was limited to 11 journalists working in Türkiye. The findings indicate that the use of drones in journalism is perceived positively for facilitating access, providing bird's-eye view imagery, enhancing aesthetic visuals, reducing physical and material risks in the news-gathering process, increasing the attractiveness of news, promoting objective journalism, and creating new employment opportunities. However, the findings also reveal concerns regarding the violation of personal data protection, privacy, and the boundaries between public and private domains. As a result of these findings, it can be concluded that there are debates about the meaning and use of drone journalism in the industry and that theoretical, practical and legal advances are needed. This study has limitations in terms of research methodology, sampling technique and size. Future research could be improved with new studies that are larger in scale and focus specifically on female drone journalists.

In recent years, a large number of disputes have arisen in which parties invoke the First Amendment, but the government action they challenge does not directly regulate “speech,” as in communication. Instead, the government is restricting the creation of communicative materials that are intended to be disseminated in the future – i.e., they restrict producing speech. Examples of such disputes include bans on recording public officials in public places, Los Angeles County’s ban on bareback (condom-less) pornography, restrictions on tattoo parlors, so-called “Ag-Gag” laws forbidding making records of agricultural operations, as well as many others. The question this article address is whether such laws pose serious First Amendment problems.I conclude that they do. First Amendment protection for conduct associated with producing speech is justified for two distinct reasons: first, because such protection is necessary to make protection for communication meaningful; and second, because the Press Clause provides a textual and historical basis for such protection. However, because speech production involves conduct that can have substantial, negative social consequences, it is also true that First Amendment protection for speech production must be limited, and probably less extensive than protection for actual communication.In the balance of this article, I propose a doctrinal framework for how restrictions on speech production might be analyzed. The framework draws on broader free-speech principles such as the content-based/content-neutral dichotomy, and the Supreme Court’s repeated statements that the First Amendment accords special importance to speech relevant to the democratic process. However, the framework is distinct from general free-speech analysis, and for the reasons discussed above, generally more tolerant of regulation. I close by applying my proposed doctrinal rules to a number of recent disputes.

Social media have opened up new possibilities for news engagement, and one of the important possibilities is news curation, which is defined as the reconstructing, reformulating, repurposing, reframing and sharing of news through social media. Focusing on this news curation concept, this study extends the Cognitive Mediation Model and the Communication Mediation Model (O-S-R-O-R) to the social media context. Drawing on a national survey of 1,135 South Korean adults, the present study finds that news elaboration and news curation are positively related to political knowledge and mediate the association between social media use for news and political knowledge. Even democracies endowed with the most active free press struggle to maintain diversity of news coverage. Consolidation and market forces may cause only a few dominant players to control the news cycle. Editorial policies may be biased by corporate ownership relations, narrowing news coverage and focus. To an increasing degree this problem also applies to social media news distribution, since it is subject to the same socio-economic drivers. To study the effects of consolidation and ownership on news diversity, we model the diversity of Chilean coverage on the basis of ownership records and social media data. We create similarity networks of news outlets on the basis of their ownership and the topics they cover. We then examine the relationships between the topology of ownership networks and content similarity to characterize how ownership affects news coverage. A network analysis reveals that Chilean media is highly concentrated both in terms of ownership as well as in terms of topics covered. Several recent studies have examined how professional journalists use social media at work. However, we know little about the differences between younger and older journalists' use of social media for newsgathering. We conducted 16 in-depth interviews comparing eight young journalists (median age = 24) with eight older journalists (median age = 50) in Norway. The younger journalists reported using multiple social media platforms, such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram, to collect politically significant information, news observations, sources and comments. By comparison, the older journalists reported relying heavily on elite sources on Twitter. This reluctance to use a variety of social media platforms may limit older journalists' exposure to a variety of news sources. As a result, younger journalists seem to follow a more multi-perspectival approach to social media and may be more innovative in their newsgathering. Hence, younger journalists may be exposed to more diverse types of news sources than older journalists. Various studies conclude that from the point of view of journalists, the media convergence brings an improvement in the quality of journalism. Others argue that this phenomenon is rather a managerial subterfuge, as it requires fewer staff, and by default fewer journalists. The media convergence encourages the public to participate in the process of creating the content, but as a downside called upon is the difference in participation in that certain segments of the public are neglected and are unable to participate in the new media culture. The study was aimed at ascertaining the level at which broadcast journalists in South-East Nigeria deploy the social media in news gathering and transmission. The survey research method was used while the questionnaire served as the measuring instrument. The entire 867 broadcast journalists in the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria constituted the population of the study from where a sample of 274 was drawn using the Taro Yamane's formula. Using the purposive sampling technique, the researchers found that broadcast journalists in South- East Nigeria have not significantly embraced the social media in the news gathering and transmission. It was therefore recommended among others that broadcast journalists in South-East Nigeria should embrace the social media platforms as the platforms represent potent tools for the practice of modern day journalism. Text clustering plays an important role in data mining and machine learning. After years of development, clustering technology has produced a series of theories and methods. However, in the text clustering of Chinese news, the mainstream LDA method suffers a high time complex. In order to improve the speed, this paper puts forward a new method in which neural network language model is first applied to text clustering. Text clustering is first converted to its dual problem called word clustering. With neural network language model, we can get word vector which can be used in the fuzzy k-means of the Chinese news keyword set. Based on the keyword clustering result, we can get text clustering result of Chinese news by a single transition. Experiments have show this method's running speed is five times faster than LDA. None of those New Zealand men who served as official war correspondents in World War II are alive today to tell their stories. It is left to the media historian to try and piece together their lives and actions, always regretting that research had not started sooner. Sadly there is more information available about World War I and the life and actions of Malcolm Ross, the country's first official war correspondent, than there is about New Zealand's World War II correspondents. Nevertheless, remembering the work of these journalists is important, so this is a first attempt at chronicling the circumstances surrounding the appointment of the first of the official correspondents, John Herbert Hall and Robin Templeton Miller, for the 1939-45 conflict. The story of the appointment of men to cover the war, whether as press correspondents, photographers, artists or broadcasters, is one of 'absurd delays' which were not resolved until nearly two years of the war had passed. We enjoy freedom of speech in New Zealand, even though the Bill of Rights Act guarantee can be over-ridden. We have a variety of privately owned news media, even though the vast majority are owned by overseas interests. We have state-owned radio and television, even though our major television network was freed of its public service broadcasting obligations in order to pursue commercial goals. We have high quality tertiary institutions to train our future journalists, even though the ranks of our newsrooms have been systematically depleted. We have sophisticated telecommunications services, even though only 1 percent of us have optical broadband. The qualifications will not be lost on you. In other words, when I reflect on our good fortune I see that it is tempered by shortcomings, actual and potential. This article looks at international reporting in the age of participatory media. The authors cite the protest of the 2009 elections in Iran and the attempts of the government to stop the protests by arresting the instigators and controlling media coverage of the events. News reports, however, were made by Iranian citizen reporters who posted videos of breaking news on Web sites. The authors also discussed how traditional news outlets such as CNN and "The New York Times" embraced such citizen reports. The article also discusses technological advances that have helped news outlets reduce the cost of overseas reporting.

The article focuses on the investigation pertaining to various instances in order for media can be held liable for intentional infliction of emotional distress (IIED) in the U.S. IIED has been considered as a newsgathering techniques used by mass media. It explores a historical background of IIED and the Constitutional provisions that is being used to safeguard journalists and guidelines to make them responsible for their action. It provides a discussion on the impact of Internet to the transformation on the journalism's role and consequences of publication considering the accessibility of information to journalists. Moreover, it provides an analysis on the public's reaction to the death of former District Attorney Louis Conradt wherein his death has been caused by IIED.

The article focuses on the argument pertaining to the change in conceptions of originality in copyright law in the U.S. It has been cited that courts consider works to be original and copyrightable if they were products of independent intellectual labor. However, the applicability of the Copyright Act is questioned because of the ambiguity of its provisions pertaining to the originality requirement. It explores that the news industry has aimed for legal news report protection in the 1800's due to the impact of the social and technological changes which has led to the implementation of the Copyright Act.

The article focuses on the boundaries of the First Amendment Press Clause in the U.S. Constitution. It notes that the problem with the Press Clause lies, in part, in the alleged near silence from the Framers about the protection of the freedom of the press under the Bill of Rights. It also examines Supreme Court cases involving campaigner Dan Cohen, Food Lion Inc. and Desnick Eye Center. Allowing a tester's privilege for journalists is cited as one way to resolve indecision for cases involving the media and their investigatory news gathering techniques.

This paper addresses an integrated information mining techniques for broadcasting TV-news. This utilizes technique from the fields of acoustic, image, and video analysis, for information on news story title, newsman and scene identification. The goal is to construct a compact yet meaningful abstraction of broadcast TV-news, allowing users to browse through large amounts of data in a non-linear fashion with flexibility and efficiency. By adding acoustic analysis, a news program can be partitioned into news and commercial clips, with 90% accuracy on a data set of 400h TV-news recorded off the air from July 2005 to August 2006. By applying speaker identification and/or image detection techniques, each news stories can be segmented with a better accuracy of 95.92%. On-screen captions or subtitles are recognized by OCR techniques to produce the text title of each news stories. The extracted title words can be used to link or to navigate more related news contents on the WWW. In cooperation with facial and scene analysis and recognition techniques, OCR results can provide users with multimodal query on specific news stories. The rapid development of language resources and tools using machine learning techniques for less computerized languages requires appropriately tagged corpus. A tagged Bengali news corpus has been developed from the web archive of a widely read Bengali newspaper. A web crawler retrieves the web pages in Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) format from the news archive. At present, the corpus contains approximately 34 million wordforms. Named Entity Recognition (NER) systems based on pattern based shallow parsing with or without using linguistic knowledge have been developed using a part of this corpus. The NER system that uses linguistic knowledge has performed better yielding highest F-Score values of 75.40%, 72.30%, 71.37%, and 70.13% for person, location, organization, and miscellaneous names, respectively. This paper considers notions of agency, interaction and power in business news journalism. In the first part, we present a bird's eye view of news access theory as it is reflected in selected sociological and anthropological literature on the ethnography of news production. Next, we show how these theoretical notions can be applied to the study of press releases and particularly to the linguistic pragmatic analysis of the specific social and textual practices that surround their transformation into news reports. Drawing on selected fieldwork data collected at the business desk of a major Flemish quality newspaper, we present an innovative methodology combining newsroom ethnography and computer-assisted writing process analysis which documents how a reporter discovers a story, introduces it into the newsroom, writes and reflects on it. In doing so, we put the individual journalist's writing practices center stage, zoom in on the specific ways in which he interacts with sources and conceptualize power in terms of his dependence on press releases. Following Beeman & Peterson (2001), we argue in favor of a view of journalism as 'interpretive practice' and of news production as a process of entextualization involving multiple actors who struggle over authority, ownership and control. We examined the satisfaction in and perceived quality of information about one’s job, business unit, and company, as well as perceived quality of urgent news (i.e., news about changes in business and generally considered legally sensitive material), communicated via different media. Results from 598 fulltime employees revealed that rich media (e.g., face-to-face) was most related to satisfaction in information about one’s job and business unit and in perceived quality of information from the supervisor; lean media (e.g., company newsletter) was most related to satisfaction in and quality of information from top management, while moderate media (e.g., e-mail) was only significantly related to perceived quality of urgent news. Trust in top management was positively related to satisfaction in and quality of information shared by management. The article focuses on the lack of Internet or wireless technology provisions in the North American Free Trade Agreement. The treaty had little or no impact on the gathering of news or its presentation because the ownership of communications industries continues to be regulated. It argues that the coverage of continental affairs in the region is thin when measured against the considerable flows of people across the borders.

Polls are a prominent feature of U.S. election news coverage. Although polls are used to explain voter opinion, they are employed mostly to fuel horse-race coverage and to craft images consistent with the candidates' positions in the race. Moreover, U.S. journalists sometimes misinterpret polls by slighting the possibility that changes in candidate preference are the result of survey error rather than real change. The article discusses the digital frontier as a dynamic space encouraging professionals and amateurs to take in the procedure of newsgathering across video, audio and text. It states that journalism students do not want a curriculum that concentrates on news writing, pyramid-style for junior level entry for career path to mainstream or to regional media outlets. This study shows that the order of information presentation in broadcast news stories influences recall and recognition of information contained in the newscast. Specifically, it was theorized that chronological presentation of events would decrease the need for semantic memory access and allow the viewer to process the news story episodically. This, in turn, would reduce the amount of effort demanded of viewers and would increase the amount of information making the translation from the television screen to the viewers' memories.
