Abstract

This article reports on the precarious state of the news media as they transition into the Internet age, and new models in nonprofit journalism that may be able to cope with the changes. While financially strained newspapers and news magazines are laying off reporters and closing foreign news desks, noncommercial news organizations like National Public Radio (NPR), the Center for Public Integrity, and other nonprofits offer examples of ways to keep alive the costly but necessary practice of in-depth investigative reporting.
