2. The AIChE 'Concept Warehouse': A Web-Based Tool to Promote Concept-Based Instruction

Abstract

This paper describes the "AIChE Concept Warehouse," a recently developed web-based instructional tool that enables faculty within the discipline of chemical engineering to better provide their students concept-based instruction. It currently houses over 2,000 concept questions and 10 concept inventories pertinent to courses throughout the core chemical engineering curriculum. These questions are available for faculty use both as in-class concept-based clicker questions (or ConcepTests) and stand-alone concept inventories, and can be accessed in various formats (online or offline) for use in class and on assignments and exams. The design philosophy is to make the tool versatile so that it can be used in the way that best fits with the instructor's teaching philosophy and the program's educational environment. Instructors and students perceive it to catalyze engagement and promote learning. While domain specificity is critical to the targeted development of tools like the one we describe, we argue that the computer-based approach is generic and could be applied to any engineering discipline. One objective in describing this tool and characterizing our experiences using it is to contribute to such wider adaptation.

4. Eurodisney, French Politics, and the American Dream.

Abstract

This paper summarizes the past, present, and future of Eurodisney in France from cultural awareness and cultural business ethics viewpoints, suggesting that although the French have not bought into the American dream that is Disney, they are so heavily involved in Eurodisney from a financial angle that they can do naught but continue to provide financial support. Eurodisney is a European business in trouble; it had tremendous national and local backing and continues to receive local financial support as a matter of cultural obligation to local business and banks. Even though it was 5 billion francs in debt, Eurodisney received renewed financial support from European, and especially French, businesses and banks. It is suggested that Eurodisney brings a conflict between the French and European and the American cultures to the forefront. This is a conflict between the old and the new in an age where the service industries are growing at an unprecedented rate. Entertainment is now a product that must be marketed and sold on a world-wide basis, American style, despite France's desire to control it in a more European business style. 8. Using Word Clouds for Fast, Formative Assessment of Students' Short Written Responses

Abstract

Active learning in class helps students develop deeper understanding of chemical engineering principles. While the use of multiple-choice ConcepTests is clearly effective, we advocate for including student writing in learning activities as well. In this article, we demonstrate that word clouds can provide a quick analytical technique to assess student writing. We provide two examples: students' in-class explanations of their answer choice to multiple-choice ConcepTests, and student responses to "muddiest point" reflection exercises.

9. Student Attitudes in the Transition to an Active-Learning Technology

Abstract

Changes in student perceptions to a novel technology-based, active-learning pedagogy using a custom, sophisticated, personal response system called WISE were studied over the first five years it was used. Students tended to view active learning more favorably over time, particularly in regards to statements that required them to be interpretive of their own learning. They also perceived that being required to write explanations prompted them to think more deeply about multiple-choice conceptual questions. Implications for adopting active-learning techniques are discussed.

Abstract

SPR 653, Thermal sprayed zinc anodes used for impressed current cathodic protection of reinforced concrete deteriorate over time., Two different technologies, ultrasound and electrical circuit resistance combined with water permeability, were, investigated in the laboratory to determine whether they were feasible methods for estimating anode condition. The, ultrasonic method was unable to detect a reflected acoustic signal from zinc-on-concrete specimens due to scattering of the, signal within the samples. Circuit resistance was shown to increase with the electrochemical age of the specimens, but the, resistance trend did not correlate with the bond strength trend at later ages. The aged specimens were fairly impermeable, to water infiltration presumably due to build up of reaction products in the porosity. Consequently, a method of using, resistance measurements combined with water infiltration to determine anode condition was not successful. It was shown, that the permeability improved if the surface was mechanically perturbed such as creating a pin hole. Improving, permeability by penetrating the surface could have ramifications for improving anode performance.

Abstract

Background: Anaemia in pregnancy remains a severe public health problem in sub-Saharan African countries including Nigeria., Objectives: To assess factors associated with anaemia in pregnancy among Nigerian women., Methods: A secondary analysis of the 2018 Nigeria demographic health survey was conducted to determine the predictors of anaemia among Nigerian pregnant women (N=1522). SAS 9.4 was used for the analysis., Results: The prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy was 61.1%. On multivariable logistic regression analysis, women in the North-central (AOR=2.52, CI=1.46-4.35) and South-south (AOR=2.21, CI=1.06-4.59) had increased odds of anaemia in pregnancy, compared to those in the Northwest. Women with no education (AOR=2.38, CI=1.28-4.44), primary education (AOR=3.06, CI=1.58-5.96) and secondary education (AOR=1.75, CI=1.04-2.94) had increased odds of anaemia in pregnancy compared to women with teriary education. Also, women not in marital union had increased odds of anaemia in pregnancy compared to women in a union (AOR=2.56, CI=1.15-5.72). Women in the second (AOR=2.42, CI=1.79-3.29) and third trimesters of pregnancy (AOR=2.83, CI=2.07-3.89) had increased odds of anaemia., Conclusion: These findings are important for the control of anemia among pregnant Nigerian women.
