Introduction: This research focuses on the barriers and supports that influence the development of affective-sexual relationships as perceived by a group of people with intellectual disabilities. Method: 14 adults with intellectual disabilities participated in the study, and focus groups were conducted over 4 sessions. These were recorded and transcribed. The results were grouped into 7 themes: policy, professionals and services, families, friends, partners, the disabled people themselves and society. Results: Participants criticise the lack of knowledge about disability policy; they emphasise that they do not receive enough support from professionals, while describing the rules of support services as limiting; families are perceived as conditioners of sexuality; they highlight the difficulty of forming friendships and denounce society's prejudices, among others. Discussion: In recent years there has been a paradigm shift towards recognising the right of people with intellectual disabilities to have intimate relationships, but they continue to face denial of their "intimate citizenship". Analyses and changes in different areas of people's lives are proposed in favour of greater respect for Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), especially in relation to sexuality. This study aimed to investigate the disaster or emergency coping skills of people with intellectual disabilities and the factors that affect these skills. The panel survey on the lives of people with disabilities from the 3rd dataset (2020) of the Korea Development Institute for the Disabled was used for this analysis. Response data from 275 people with intellectual disabilities aged 10 years or older were analyzed. Differences between disaster or emergency coping skill levels and sub-questions of skills, according to the general characteristics of people with intellectual disabilities, were identified, as well as factors affecting the level of disaster or emergency coping skills. The results show that the coping skills level was low; among the sub-questions, the use of fire extinguishers and awareness of the location of fire extinguishers or emergency bells in the event of a disaster or emergency were also low. Factors affecting the level of coping skills were found to be the level of education and experience in comprehensive disaster coping training. The results of this study suggest that training and education on disaster or emergency coping skills for people with intellectual disabilities are necessary and that programs should be developed for this purpose. Background: The aim of the study was to identify the variables of the internal compensatory mechanisms that differentiate the body build and posture of people with Down syndrome (DS) from the intellectual disability (ID) population. It was assumed that gaining knowledge in the abovementioned aspect will allow for a better understanding of the limitation of the kinesthetic abilities of people with ID and DS and simultaneously enable to optimize the process of planning and interventions to improve physical activity in this population with the adequate use of theirs strengths in the biomechanical and morphofunctional systems. Methods: The methodology of this systematic review was developed according to the PRISMA guidelines. A search of PubMed, EBSCO, Scopus databases was conducted to identify all studies on DS/ID and the body build and posture from 2003 to 2023. Results: 395 articles were assessed to determine eligibility, while 22 studies met the inclusion criteria and were subjected to detailed analysis and assessment of their methodological quality. The differentiation of the body build and posture in DS population can be induced by both internal and external compensatory mechanisms. It is difficult to confirm the direct effect of the intrinsic variables that impact the body build and posture in the ID population, excluding people with DS. Conclusions: Compared to other ID, the intrinsic differences in the body build and posture in DS individuals were induced by gender, age, and level of ID. The tendency for diversity between DS and other ID populations in body build and posture may be determined by the presence of the third copy of chromosome 21 in DS group. Internal compensatory processes may be induced mainly by abnormalities in the structure of the cervical vertebrae and feet. Background: Caring for people with intellectual disabilities can be a challenging task, but it can also bring about positive experiences for family caregivers. The present study aimed to explore these positive experiences and shed light on the ways in which family caregivers of people with intellectual disabilities can find meaning and fulfillment in their roles. Methods: This qualitative study used conventional content analysis to explore the positive experiences of family caregivers of people with intellectual disabilities. Sixteen family caregivers from rural areas in southeastern Iran were purposively selected to participate in the study. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted to collect data. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The data were analyzed using the method proposed by Graneheim and Lundman. Results: The data analysis resulted in the emergence of a single theme, which was achievements of providing care for people with intellectual disabilities. This theme was comprised of four main categories: a new outlook on life, family caregivers' peace of mind, strengthening of family ties, and improvement of social status. The provision of care for people with intellectual disabilities created positive changes, affecting family functioning and care provision for people with intellectual disabilities. Conclusion: It is recommended that families of people with intellectual disabilities focus on these positive experiences and share them with other families who may be struggling with a recent diagnosis of intellectual disability in their child. In Europe, large numbers of people with disabilities are willing to work but have problems finding a job. One of the barriers to this is job complexity, particularly for those with low education, low IQ, or cognitive impairments. Digital technologies might help. Specifically, cognitive support technology (CST) has the potential to make jobs less complex and thus more accessible. CST may concern step-by-step digital instructions presented with monitors, tablets, smart phones, beamer projections, or near-eye displays. Based on cross-case evaluations, we aimed to define the success factors in the process of technology selection, development, and implementation. Four cases, situated at public social firms which offer jobs to people with disabilities, were selected. In each case, the optimal form of CST was selected. A qualitative analysis of subjective experiences of work accessibility, performance, usability, and acceptance was applied. The results were positive for most participants in most cases. Once installed, the CST was successful in simplifying jobs. A proportion of the workforce for which a specific job had been considered too complex was able to perform that job when supported by CST. Moreover, a majority of people judged the usability of the technology positively. For the consecutive steps of selection, development, and implementation, we ended up with eleven factors of success; these included, among others, shared and transparent decision making (in technology selection), the iterative and active involvement of workers to optimally adjust work instructions (in technology development), and explicit attention for psychosocial barriers (in technology implementation). Background: Evidence from the UK from the early stages of the covid-19 pandemic showed that people with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) had higher rates of covid-19 mortality than people without ID. However, estimates of the magnitude of risk vary widely; different studies used different time periods; and only early stages of the pandemic have been analysed. Existing analyses of risk factors have also been limited. The objective of this study was to investigate covid-19 mortality rates, hospitalisation rates, and risk factors in people with ID in England up to the end of 2021. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of all people with a laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection or death involving covid-19. Datasets covering primary care, secondary care, covid-19 tests and vaccinations, prescriptions, and deaths were linked at individual level. Results: Covid-19 carries a disproportionately higher risk of death for people with ID, above their already higher risk of dying from other causes, in comparison to those without ID. Around 2,000 people with ID had a death involving covid-19 in England up to the end of 2021; approximately 1 in 180. The covid-19 standardized mortality ratio was 5.6 [95% CI 5.4, 5.9]. People with ID were also more likely to be hospitalised for covid-19 than people without ID. The main determinants of severe covid-19 outcomes (deaths and/or hospitalisations) in both populations were age, multimorbidity and vaccination status. The key factor responsible for the higher risk of severe covid-19 in the ID population was a much higher prevalence of multimorbidity in this population. AstraZeneca vaccine was slightly less effective in preventing severe covid-19 outcomes among people with ID than among people without ID. Background: Previous research has shown that people with intellectual disabilities have limited sexual knowledge, which can be essential for developing positive sexuality. This study aimed to check the validity and reliability of an assessment tool (SexKunn) for measuring the sexual knowledge of people with intellectual disabilities in Norway. Further, we aimed to identify potential knowledge gaps among the participants and highlight their potential impact Methods: 37 people with intellectual disabilities completed one assessment. 20 participants then completed a retest. Clinicians' (n=23) views on the assessment tool were measured to obtain face validity. Positive and negative agreement analysis was used to identify potential dimensions in the data. Results: A weighted Cohen's kappa for the test and retest of the overall scores was considered to be substantial. The clinicians described an acceptable face validity regarding high positive value scores and low negative burden scores. They also suggested improvements. The study identified that the participants lacked knowledge about female genitals, hygiene, appropriate touching/sexual acts with friends/intimate partners, and contraception. Conclusions: The SexKunn is a feasible assessment tool to measure sexual knowledge in people with intellectual disabilities. Data from the World Health Organization indicate that the unemployment rate for people with disabilities can reach 80% in some countries. In Western societies, employment for people with physical or sensory disabilities is settled through inclusive practices in ordinary settings, according to the interests of the person. In the case of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, it is frequently developed through segregating and not very emancipatory practices, which severely restricts professional development options. This article develops the state of the art regarding research on the professional development of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The different studies are classified according to the six main models of professional development, where trends and main contributions are observed. Results show a low number of investigations, with a predominance of the sociocognitive approach, which is focused on self-efficacy. The conclusion highlights the need to investigate from an emancipatory perspective, which contributes to overcoming the barriers and promotes practices that advance towards social justice and equity for people with intellectual disabilities. Caregivers of people with intellectual disabilities may feel overburdened in their work and experience negative psychological consequences. The purpose of this instrumental study was to determine the evidence of internal structure and reliability of the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview scale. A total of 398 family caregivers, including women and men, participated (M = 47.33, SD = 10.44). The structure of the scale was evaluated by factor analysis and the McDonald Omega coefficient was used to estimate reliability. Sixteen models of the scale were tested, differing in number of items and factor structures. A model of 15 items and 4 dimensions (overload, competence, social relationship, and interpersonal relationship) obtained acceptable fit (χ2 = 184.72; p < 0.001; CFI = 0.95; TLI = 0.94; RMSEA = 0.055; SRMR = 0.05) and reliability coefficients above 0.70 in their dimensions. COVID-19 pandemic is a public health issue. From 2019 to 2022, 4.5 million people died from the COVID-19 epidemic. Consequently, COVID-19 has put a significant strain on every single creature in this world. COVID-19 has been associated with lockdown, thus resulting in lockdown related inequities towards most people in this world, with unanticipated consequences for people with disabilities. Building in this debate, this paper aimed to discuss on the impacts of COVID-19 on the physical health of People with Intellectual Disabilities. Based on the Prisma protocol, this systematic literature review examined 28 publications from Web Sources of Science and Scopus.The study identified three themes regarding the impact of COVID-19 on the physical environment of people with intellectual disabilities namely mental health, social isolation, severe health problems, socioeconomic and psychology. This study has significant implications in understanding how PWID are impacted by COVID 19 and urged that early preventative measures should be taken since People with Intellectual Disabilities are considered a vulnerable population, therefore it is crucial to ensure that their health status are sustained. Background: Although the current preventive measures relating to COVID-19 can lead to challenges in the daily work of direct support workers (e.g. keeping 1.5 m distance), it remains vital to uphold the principles of person-centred care when working with older people with intellectual disabilities. The current study explores the extent to which direct support workers have been able to apply a specific form of person-centred care (i.e. integrated emotion-oriented care, or IEOC) when working with older people with intellectual disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Six direct support workers from five facilities serving older people with intellectual disabilities in the Netherlands participated in this qualitative study. They participated in a two-hour focus group, which was transcribed verbatim, and the transcript was analysed thematically. Results: Three themes emerged: (i) the negative impact of changes due to the COVID-19 measures on service users; (ii) the adaptation of direct support workers to changes due to the COVID-19 measures; and (iii) putting the needs and wishes of service users first. Conclusion: This study provides first impressions into the experiences of direct support workers providing person-centred care to older people with intellectual disabilities during the COVID‐19 pandemic. How well are people with intellectual disabilities and their interests represented in the House of Commons and in the offices of members of Parliament (MPs)? A series of interviews was conducted with parliamentarians who have personal experience working alongside persons with disabilities, members of advocacy groups, and a person with intellectual disabilities who are or have worked in parliamentary offices. Using this information, the author explores the current state of representation of these individuals and their interests, the barriers they and others face in improving their representation, and makes recommendations for how to make the House of Commons more inclusive for persons with intellectual disabilities. Formal language: This paper discusses inclusive research and epistemic justice by using an example of a published study the authors conducted on intellectual disability and sexuality in supported living environments. Our study addressed taboos and pushed boundaries in content and methodology through two ways of inclusive research: (1) the second author of this paper who has an intellectual disability was a main researcher in the study; and (2) we interviewed people with intellectual disabilities about their own experiences as well as their desired solutions to obstacles they face in their supported living environments. Their input was centralized in the final research report. This method challenged the epistemic injustice of who have historically not been 'allowed' to produce knowledge in research. This paper offers historical insight into epistemic injustice as well as relational approaches from critical disability studies and non-Western understandings of disability that 'rethink' disability and that can thus promote epistemic justice in academic theory. By addressing both practice and theory in this paper, we aim to contribute to the growing body of inclusive research and to the epistemic justice of people with intellectual disabilities. Plain language: (1) Epistemology = thinking about knowledge, producing knowledge, sharing knowledge. (2) In history, people with intellectual disabilities have often been excluded from participating in this. This is called epistemic injustice. It is caused by the discrimination of people with intellectual disabilities (ableism). (3) Performing inclusive research with people with intellectual disabilities challenges this. It contributes to epistemic justice. Researchers and interviewees with intellectual disabilities can bring knowledge from lived experience into research. (4) Knowledge from lived experience has not always been valued in traditional research. That means we also need to think differently about 'knowledge', and about 'disability' and its 'value'. (5) Discrimination based on disability has a long history. For instance: during colonialism by European countries (starting in the 15th century), false ideas about 'poor health' and 'low intelligence' were already used to justify slavery. People with disabilities have often been locked away or even killed because they have been seen as 'less valuable'. These ways of thinking still exist. They influence our understanding of 'epistemology' because they decide whose way of thinking and way of life is valuable or not valuable. We need to change this way of thinking. (6) Some academic fields that help are critical disability studies, indigenous studies, and feminist posthumanism. These fields challenge ableist ways of thinking. This study investigated strategies for people with intellectual disabilities to self-advocate for inclusion of their priorities in social policy processes in South Africa. Method: Self advocacy strategies were identified through a scoping literature review, a review of self advocacy toolkits and semi structured interviews with people with intellectual disabilities and other stakeholders working at non-governmental and disabled people's organisations. These data sources were triangulated to identify strategies to upskill and support young adults with intellectual disabilities to share their opinions and perspectives to deepen the diversity of voices engaged in social policy advocacy. Results: Data triangulation identified three core strategies for self advocacy, in person, written strategies and engagement through social media. Discussion: Inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in civic and political life is crucial, and will only be achieved if self advocates are accepted into the policy-making arena. The cycle of perpetuating exclusion needs to be disrupted, to give people with an intellectual disabilities a say in policy decisions that have an impact on their lives. Conclusion: Adopting strategies which enable the inclusion of the voices of people with intellectual disabilities in civic activities holds potential for diversifying perspectives brought to public participation in policy development and implementation, which is currently primarily the domain of non-disabled citizens. People with intellectual disabilities often face a number of disorders that can impair their health and even endanger their lives. One of these disorders is dysphagia, which is often unrecognized in this population. The main goal of the research was to determine the differences in the severity of dysphagia relation to the degree of intellectual disability in persons placed in institutional accommodation. The study involved 31 respondents diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. The results showed that people with a higher degree of intellectual disability have more pronounced dysphagia. Caregivers of people with intellectual disabilities should be aware of the presence of dysphagia in people with intellectual disabilities, and refer them to a speech-language pathologist in a timely manner with the goal of timely diagnosis and treatment to improve the overall health and quality of life of people of this population. People with intellectual disabilities (ID) continue to report unmet housing needs. The purpose of this scoping review was to explore the extent of research on housing for people with ID, and the complexities of people's housing experiences. A search yielded 44 studies conducted from 2009 to 2018, meeting the study inclusion criteria. The study findings were analyzed thematically, using an ecological systems framework, which examines the inter-relationships between individual experiences and their contexts, such as within families, organizations, communities and socio-political settings. Cross-study comparisons were conducted using qualitative matrices. Regarding housing types, the use of large institutions to house people with ID continues in most countries and countries are at various stages in the deinstitutionalization process. Supported housing was the most promising housing type related to positive outcomes; however, it is highly dependent on availability of affordable housing stock and individualized supports. Study findings show that people's experiences vary greatly and interact with differences in severity of disability, income levels, country of origin, and mental health. Across housing types, people report stigma and loneliness. This article highlights study findings alongside systems-level themes and identifies areas for further study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Self-determination in people with disabilities is crucial for achieving their quality of life. Support given from families to their children depends to a large extent on the reinforcement of perceptions about self-determination. In that sense, this research aims to describe the opinion of parents of adolescents and young people with intellectual disabilities about this construct. Five focus groups were formed with 42 participants. The lexicometric analysis of the group interviews using Iramuteq software yielded four dimensions: autonomy; barriers in the family and the background; support and opportunities; psychological capabilities. Parents do not acknowledge the entire concept of self-determination. They associate it with autonomy for personal care and housework and, to a lesser extent, with community life. The family barriers are psychological: fear, overprotection, underestimation and lack of trust in the child's capacity. This leads to less opportunity offer. They consider that society is poorly prepared to stimulate these processes. They feel the need to receive professional support directed to revise their beliefs, increase their knowledge and put into practice strategies to facilitate the achievement of self-determination in their children. Objective To investigate the effectiveness of a novel and complex intervention in community-dwelling people with intellectual disabilities. Methods Forty-three participants completed the experiment. The subjects were randomly assigned the experimental (n=33) or control (n=10) groups. The multicomponent intervention program comprised exercise and nutrition management and behavior modification. The intervention was performed for 60 minutes once weekly for 10 weeks. The assessment included anthropometric data, body composition and blood pressure analysis, and blood tests. In addition, pulmonary function, physical function, and health-related quality of life were measured before and after the intervention. Results No adverse events occurred during the intervention. After the intervention, the experimental group showed a significantly higher increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level than did the control group (effect size=0.152, p=0.019). Conclusion This innovative intervention was effective in improving cardiovascular health. This article discusses an inclusive research program where colleagues and co-researchers (with intellectual disability) guide and inform future research practice to ensure research is targeted to areas of significance and relevance to them. The research program is about sites of former disability institutions. Many people with intellectual disability in Australia were segregated and forced to live in disability institutions until deinstitutionalisation efforts became mainstream in the late 20th Century. We are a team of four people based in New South Wales, Australia. Our team includes disability advocates and researchers who have contributed to a program of research exploring connections between sites of former disability institutions and contemporary disability rights. In this article, we reflect on conversations about our research undertaken so far and where the research goes from here. We explore five pillars of action informing how research relating to disability institutions can progress: 1. Current use: research exploring erasure of experiences of institutionalisation communicated through educational resources and maps about current use of sites of former disability institutions; 2. Reparative planning processes: research developing frameworks for alternative approaches to planning and heritage processes supporting alternative uses of former sites of disability institutions; 3. Official recognition and redress: research exploring perspectives on governments formally recognising and remedying experiences of people with disability who were institutionalised; 4. Community-led repair and remembrance: research identifying practices for both celebrating advocates with disability and reckoning with and repairing familial and social bonds broken through institutionalisation; 5. Community-inclusive practices: research exploring endurance of institutional practices in disability accommodation in community settings. These five pillars are underpinned by three foundational layers: advancing disability human rights; reckoning with intersections between disability institutions and settler colonialism, other dynamics of oppression, and eugenics; and using inclusive practices. Professionals working with people with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) can be exposed to challenging behaviors (CBs), which may result in professionals exhibiting emotional reactions that can impact their practices. This study examined these reactions and analyzed how they are influenced by the individual characteristics of people with IDD (gender, age, and level of IDD) and the variables related to CB (type of behavior and its frequency and behavioral function). A total of 125 professionals assessed 293 people with IDD who exhibited CBs. The professionals were asked to complete the Behavior Problems Inventory—Short Form, the Emotional Reactions to Challenging Behavior Scale, and the Questions About Behavior Function measure. It was revealed that positive emotional reactions predominated over negative ones. Significant results were found regarding the level of disability and the age of people with IDD. Emotional reactions were related to the severity of CBs, especially self-injurious and aggressive/destructive behavior, as well as certain behavioral functions. The severity of CBs and the age of people with IDD emerge as key predictors of the emotional reactions of professionals. In short, these reactions vary according to different variables, highlighting the importance of interventions that address professionals' emotional needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Previous research shows that people with intellectual disabilities have less knowledge about sexual health and are more vulnerable to victimisation. In cases of sexual abuse, they are likely to encounter the criminal justice system as vulnerable witnesses. Several challenges arise when people with intellectual disabilities are in communication with the criminal justice system. We aimed to explore the perceptions, experiences and knowledge of people with intellectual disabilities regarding personal and sexual boundaries in order to identify factors relevant for preventing sexual abuse, to develop future studies.Method: The study had a qualitative design. Data were collected from seven people with mild intellectual disabilities (25-40 years; 2 men, five women) through one-to-one interviews in specialised health care services for people with intellectual disabilities (SHCS). The participants lived alone, in group homes and with their families. Many received professional support services. Data were analysed using thematic analysis.Results: The interviews identified that the participants want to be in romantic relationships and that some, consider sex to be unimportant. Many of them have had trouble finding someone to have a romantic relationship with. The participants were unsure about sexual consent related to sexual activity, though many could explain the concept of consent in other contexts. Many participants reported that they had experienced sexual abuse, including online sexual abuse. Those participants who had reported the sexual abuse had positive experiences obtaining assistance from the criminal justice system. The participants who had experienced sexual abuse reported trauma and fear related to their experiences.Conclusion: This study highlights the need for information about sexually abusive relationships, risks online and ways to get help. More attention should be given to the impact of trauma, police and mental health treatment following sexual abuse against people with intellectual disabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite legislation affirming the rights of people with intellectual disabilities to take equal part in society, marginalization persists. Accessibility needs can impact this group's ability to engage in the digital society and in aspects of daily living, such as employment and socializing. The Digi-ID PLUS study was established with a team of seven people with an intellectual disability. Team members were hired as a diverse group to give insight into their lived experiences in reviewing and validating research findings. Their insights were key to every aspect of Digi-ID PLUS. It has been recognized that user-centered design enhances technology development and accessibility; therefore, the aim of establishing a Citizen Advisory Panel (CAP) in our program design and delivery is to include the critical role of users by experience to review, validate and test our solution to enhance the accessibility of all aspects of the program. Working with Digi-ID PLUS, the CAP spoke of the impact being paid team members had on their lives. Analysis of insights shared indicated that being a part of the team had a positive impact on their self-image confidence and digital skills acquisition CAP members discussed the importance of supporting each other and the value of being paid for their insights. There is a dearth of research on how people with intellectual disabilities perceive different faiths, both their own and other people's. The aim of this study was to explore certain aspects of religious identification among adults with intellectual disabilities: their declared affiliation with a specific denomination, their perceptions and subjective knowledge constituting the image of a "good follower", their self-assessment, and their attitudes toward representatives of other denominations. In 2023, interviews were conducted with 34 adults with intellectual disabilities in three Polish cities to achieve this aim. The study was of an inclusive character and involved co-researchers with intellectual disabilities who participated in designing the research, conducting the interviews and the analysis. We found that people with intellectual disabilities do not always know how to define their religious affiliation and have limited knowledge and experience in relationships with individuals of different faiths, and their attitudes toward such individuals are varied. The available research suggests that the rate of involvement of people with disabilities and their families in the life of the Church is significantly lower than that of people without disabilities. The engagement of people with disabilities is largely dependent on (a) the level of religiosity; (b) intrinsic motivation; (c) the level of trust in the institutions of the Church; and (d) broadly understood accessibility factors. Barriers experienced by people with disabilities are complex in nature, and make these people dependent on the help of others. Overcoming them requires significant investment, commitment, and change in the Church institution. These issues are relatively rarely addressed in the literature. The few, usually partial studies tend to concentrate on specific disabilities, discussed with no reference to the family context. However, it is usually the case that the religiosity and church activity of a person with a disability are firmly rooted in their family reality, shaped by the level of religiosity of their parents, and sometimes dependent on their presence and involvement. The aim of this article, which is both theoretical and empirical in nature, is to answer the question of which barriers form an obstacle to participation in religious life for people with disabilities and their families in Poland. This study uses the results of a nationwide qualitative research (focus group interview method) conducted among people with physical and intellectual disabilities, the hard-of-hearing and the deaf, the visually impaired, and their carers. Data analysis enabled the identification of the following barriers: infrastructural, personal and organizational (family-related and extra-familial). These research results can provide guidance in pastoral work with people with disabilities and their families, improving not only the quality of their religious experience, but also the number of the faithful in the Church community. Support organised through a personal budget aims to promote people's choices in how they arrange their support. Participation in choices of people who use little or no verbal speech to express themselves requires that support workers use personalised communication. This article explores how support workers use personalised communication to prioritise the choices of people with intellectual disabilities about organising support through a personal budget. It applies Gormley and Fager's framework of dimensions for personalising communication to analyse ethnographic data from four people with intellectual disabilities using personal budgets and their support workers. The analysis found that workers promoted people's participation in choices about their support when they focused on how people preferred to express themselves. Support practice, policy and research that target people's communication preferences in making support arrangements can have direct impact on their satisfaction with the arrangements and the quality of their personalised support. Background: This exploratory study examines the role of religion in the romantic and sexual lives of 2SLGBTQ+ (two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning, intersex, asexual, the plus reflects individuals who are self-identifying as part of the community) people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Method: Based on 31 semi-structured interviews conducted in Alberta, Canada, 13 participants shared how religion, especially Christianity, impacted their intimate lives. Findings: Conversations surrounding the loss of family connection, lack of sexual education, and a call for more inclusive religious communities were common themes. Many participants described religious teachings that cast sexuality and intimacy as sinful, contributing to stigma and fear. Conclusions: Findings emphasize the importance of expanding sex education beyond heteronormative and cisnormative frameworks. Service providers should avoid imposing religious values, as individuals with disabilities may fear losing essential supports when expressing their sexual identities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reducing restrictive practices toward individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is a globally recognized imperative and human rights priority. This paper presents a novel tool called LibRe for assessing and reducing restrictive practices. This tool involved an instrumental multistage design and collaboration between professionals, individuals with disabilities, family members, and experts from different fields. It addresses diverse restrictive practices in five key domains: physical or mechanical, chemical or pharmacological, structural, relational, and practices related to contexts and supports. It addresses practices that are pertinent to the Spanish context and that existing tools have not covered. Embedded as a step within an organizational approach, LibRe fosters organizational transformation and provides resources to achieve outcomes within reduction plans for restrictive practices. In total, 156 teams comprising 585 professionals, 64 people with disabilities, and 44 family members responded to the tool. In terms of evidence for internal structure validity, the oblique five-factor model exhibited an adequate fit through confirmatory factor analysis, along with satisfactory reliability indices, according to ordinal alpha and omega. Users positively appraised the tool's usefulness and identified its strengths and challenges. Background: Client-centred care serves as the foundation for healthcare policy. Indeed, various instruments for assessing clients' experiences of care and support are increasingly used to provide insights into the quality, and client-centred nature, of the care and support provided, which, in turn, aids the development of subsequent improvements. The unique characteristics of care and support for people with intellectual disabilities (ID), such as the need for both lifelong and life-wide care and support across all aspects of clients' lives, led to an initiative within Dutch ID care to jointly develop a range of instruments to assess the experiences of clients receiving ID care and support. Individual clients' experiences and suggestions for improvement, which are embedded in clients' care plan cycles, constitute the foundation of this Range of Instruments. This paper provides a unique, bottom-up, exhaustive account of the process of developing the Range of instruments used to assess the experiences of clients in the field of Dutch ID care. Methods: Relevant documents at three levels (i.e. 1) national documents, such as policy papers and governmental reports, 2) documents and reports from the Dutch Association of Healthcare Providers for People with Disabilities (VGN) along with minutes from the meetings of the expert Committee who assessed the instruments, and 3) correspondence between the Committee and developers as well as the forms used in the assessment process for each instrument) were qualitatively analysed by two researchers who had no affiliation with the development of the Range of instruments used to assess clients' experiences in ID care and support. All of the documents were inductively coded using a thematic analytical approach. Informants who were either currently or previously involved in the development of these instruments were asked to provide clarification over the documents themselves and to explain the context in which they were produced. Results: The development of the range of instruments can be classified into four phases, namely: 1) supporting the bottom-up development of initiatives to assess clients' experiences, 2) focusing on learning and further development, 3) stimulating exchange between the developers and users of the instruments and the Committee responsible for assessing them, and 4) further development in response to the changing times and new landscape. Conclusions: The range of instruments were found to be appropriate for a variety of clients in ID care and support, specifically in terms of assessing their individual experiences and gaining insight into their suggestions for improvement, and effective in terms of collaboratively improving the quality of ID care and support. In so doing, these instruments potentially provide an avenue through which clients' experiences can be embedded in the process of ID care and support. Other specific features in the development of these instruments, namely their incremental adoption, ongoing evaluation and strong practice orientation, were also found to be suitable for other care contexts' attempts to respond to the top-down policy objectives of client-centeredness and translating outcomes into direct care practice. Background: People with intellectual disabilities (ID) face barriers in cancer care contributing to poorer oncological outcomes. Yet, understanding cancer risks in the ID population remains incomplete. Aim: To provide an overview of cancer incidence and cancer risk assessments in the entire ID population as well as within ID‐related disorders. Methods: This systematic review examined cancer risk in the entire ID population and ID‐related disorders. We systematically searched PubMed (MEDLINE) and EMBASE for literature from January 1, 2000 to July 15, 2022 using a search strategy combining terms related to cancer, incidence, and ID. Results: We found 55 articles assessing cancer risks in the ID population at large groups or in subgroups with ID‐related syndromes, indicating that overall cancer risk in the ID population is lower or comparable with that of the general population, while specific disorders (e.g., Down's syndrome) and certain genetic mutations may elevate the risk for particular cancers. Discussion: The heterogeneity within the ID population challenges precise cancer risk assessment at the population level. Nonetheless, within certain subgroups, such as individuals with specific ID‐related disorders or certain genetic mutations, a more distinct pattern of varying cancer risks compared to the general population becomes apparent. Background: People with intellectual disability have a poorer health status than the general population. In The Netherlands, support workers play a key role in meeting health support needs of people with intellectual disability. Research on how people with intellectual disability and their support workers experience the support worker's role in preventing, identifying, and following up health needs of people with intellectual disability is scarce. To enhance health support of people with intellectual disability it is crucial that we understand how health support is delivered in everyday practice. Therefore, this study investigated experiences of people with intellectual disability and support workers with the health support of people with intellectual disability. Method: Data collection consisted of six focus group (FG) discussions with between four and six participants (N = 27). The FGs consisted of three groups with support workers (n = 15), two groups with participants with mild to moderate intellectual disability (n = 8), and one group with family members as proxy informants who represented their relative with severe to profound intellectual disability (n = 4). The data was analysed thematically on aspects relating to health support. Results: We identified three main themes relevant to the health support of people with intellectual disability: 1) dependence on health support, 2) communication practices in health support, and 3) organizational context of health support. Dependence on health support adresses the way in which support workers meet a need that people with intellectual disability cannot meet themselves, and communication practices and organizational context are identified as systems in which health support takes place. Conclusion: This study investigated experiences with the health support of people with intellectual disability from the perspectives of people with intellectual disability and support workers. We discuss the dependence of people with intellectual disability and the complexity of health support in everyday practice. We provide practical implications that can strengthen support workers in the provision of health support for people with intellectual disability in everyday practice. The findings of this study emphasize the need for intellectual disability care-provider organizations to establish policies around consistency in support staff to make it easier to identify and follow up health needs, and an environment where support staff can develop their expertise concerning communication practices, lifestyle choices, and identifying and following up health needs. Background: In the Western Cape, South Africa, a significant number of individuals with intellectual disabilities are cared for by caregivers who receive little or no compensation, education or support. Despite the unique challenges faced by these caregivers, no psychoeducational programmes have been implemented for this particular population. Objectives: The study aimed to examine the factors contributing to caregiver distress and develop a solution in the form of a psychoeducational programme for caregivers. Methods: A mixed-methods research approach was employed. The qualitative phase involved exploratory research to gather fundamental information and gain new insights into caregiver distress. The quantitative phase utilised a 'one-group pre-test, post-test design' with a Likert-scale questionnaire to enable meaningful interpretations and comparisons of the psychoeducational programme's impact and value. The paired t-test was employed to determine significant differences between pre-test and post-test results. Results: The statistical findings demonstrated a significant increase in knowledge, with 99% of respondents indicating a positive impact in reducing caregiver distress and 85% feeling better equipped to care for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Conclusion: The psychoeducational programme developed in this study had a positive effect on reducing caregiver distress. Contribution: This knowledge provides valuable insights for healthcare professionals in designing relevant intervention programmes, offering support and providing resources not only for individuals with intellectual disabilities but also for their caregivers. Background A peer support intervention, called basic psychological support for people affected by neglected tropical diseases (BPS-N), was piloted in India to improve mental well-being and social participation and to reduce stigma among people with disabilities due to leprosy or lymphatic filariasis. Preintervention and postintervention assessments showed improvements in mental well-being and reductions in depression and stigma. This study aimed to further evaluate this intervention at approximately 2 mo after its completion. Methods Scales were administered to 62 clients to measure stigma, depression, mental well-being and participation levels. Interviews with 13 clients and six peer supporters were conducted. Results Stigma scores were significantly reduced at 2 mo postintervention compared with preintervention and postintervention. The improvement in mental well-being detected at immediate postintervention had not changed significantly 2 mo later. Depression levels were higher than at postintervention, but lower than at preintervention levels. No significant differences were found in median participation scores, but the number of clients with moderate and severe participation restrictions reduced significantly from postintervention to 2 mo follow-up. Qualitative results showed that clients received information about their condition and treatment, and that some experienced positive effects on their emotions and self-esteem. Conclusions This study provides additional evidence on the proof of concept of BPS-N. Contexte Une intervention de soutien par les pairs, appelée Soutien psychologique de base pour les personnes atteintes de maladies tropicales négligées (BPS-N), a été pilotée en Inde afin d'améliorer le bien-être mental et la participation sociale, et de réduire la stigmatisation, chez les personnes souffrant d'incapacités dues à la lèpre ou à la filariose lymphatique. Les évaluations avant et après l'intervention ont montré une amélioration du bien-être mental et une réduction de la dépression et de la stigmatisation chez ces personnes. Cette étude avait pour but d'évaluer cette intervention environ 2 mois après son achèvement. Méthodes Des échelles ont été administrées à 62 clients pour mesurer la stigmatisation, la dépression, le bien-être mental et les niveaux de participation. Des entretiens ont été menés avec 13 clients et 6 pairs aidants. Résultats Les scores de stigmatisation ont été significativement réduits deux mois après l'intervention par rapport à la situation avant et après l'intervention. L'amélioration du bien-être mental détectée immédiatement après l'intervention n'a pas changé de manière significative deux mois plus tard. Les niveaux de dépression étaient plus élevés qu'après l'intervention, mais plus bas qu'avant l'intervention. Aucune différence significative n'a été constatée dans les scores médians de participation, mais le nombre de clients ayant des restrictions de participation modérées et sévères a diminué de manière significative entre la période post-intervention et les deux mois de suivi. El objetivo de este estudio era seguir evaluando esta intervención ∼2 meses después de su finalización. Métodos Se administraron escalas a 62 clientes para medir el estigma, la depresión, el bienestar mental y los niveles de participación. Se realizaron entrevistas con 13 clientes y 6 compañeros de apoyo. Resultados Las puntuaciones de estigma se redujeron significativamente a los 2 meses de la intervención, en comparación con antes y después de la misma. La mejora del bienestar mental detectada inmediatamente después de la intervención no había cambiado significativamente 2 meses después. Background People with leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF)-related disabilities experience higher levels of poor mental well-being compared with the general community. Mental health services are often not available. This study was conducted to provide proof of concept that basic psychological support for people affected by neglected tropical diseases (BPS-N) can be given by peer supporters to reduce stigma, improve mental well-being and participation among clients. Methods The BPS-N approach was tested in a quasi-experimental design using mixed methods. To provide psychological support using the BPS-N, peer supporters were selected and trained. They supported people with leprosy- and LF-related disabilities. Preintervention and postintervention, stigma, mental well-being, depression and participation were measured through standard scales within 4 wk of the intervention; differences were tested using standard tests of significance. Results After 3 mo of intervention, the mean level of stigma had decreased (30.3 to 24, p<0.001); high mental well-being increased (0% to 13.3%, p<0.001); and moderate to severe depression decreased (88% to 47%, p<0.001). No significant change occurred in participation restrictions (87% to 92%, p=0.497). Conclusions Psychological peer support using the BPS-N guideline appears effective in reducing stigma and improving mental well-being and can be operationalised. However, this should be confirmed through a randomised controlled trial. Cette étude a été menée pour démontrer que le soutien psychologique de base pour les personnes atteintes de MTN (BPS-N) peut être dispensé par des pairs (dans une logique de transfert de tâches) afin de réduire la stigmatisation et d'améliorer le bien-être mental et la participation des clients. Méthodes L'approche du BPS-N a été testée dans le cadre d'un modèle quasi-expérimental utilisant des méthodes mixtes. Pour fournir un soutien psychologique à l'aide du BPS-N, des pairs ont été sélectionnés et formés. Ils sont venus en aide aux personnes atteintes de lèpre et de déficiences liées à la FL. Métodos El enfoque BPS-N se probó en un diseño cuasi-experimental utilizando métodos mixtos. Para proporcionar apoyo psicológico con el BPS-N, se seleccionaron y formaron compañeros de apoyo. Apoyaron a personas con lepra y discapacidades relacionadas con la FL. El estigma, el bienestar mental, la depresión y la participación se midieron antes y después de la intervención, mediante escalas estándar; las diferencias se comprobaron mediante pruebas estándar de significación. The barriers faced by people with intellectual disabilities are many. One of the areas in which many problems have been identified is the sexual domain. This descriptive study aims to analyze the attitudes of the family environment, professional carers, and the general population toward their sexuality. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out between 2022 and 2023, using convenience sampling among family members and carers from different centers working with people with intellectual disabilities in Spain, and among the general population not related to people with intellectual disabilities. A total of 583 responses were received and significant differences were found for all variables, with the variables related to family or work proximity being those that provided the most significant and relevant results. It was observed that the male sex has a more paternalistic attitude and that in rural areas there is a more permissive attitude towards the sexuality of people with intellectual disabilities. People who work with people with disabilities have more positive attitudes towards this group, while direct relatives have more paternalistic attitudes. Nursing care in the community and specialized centers should be based on an adequate therapeutic relationship and personalized care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The self-determination of people with disabilities, and specifically people with intellectual disabilities (ID), is a growing issue due to its relevance in the field of inclusion and human rights. Although research has shown a significant relationship between self-determination and intelligence, other factors also contribute to its development. The purpose of this study was to understand what other variables may be influencing self-determination. Using the scores from 483 adolescents and adults with ID who completed the AUTODDIS scale, we performed inferential and regression analyses to determine the relationships between levels of self-determination, personal variables (sex, age, severity of ID), and contextual variables (living environment, specialized supports). We found that self-determination is affected by the severity of ID, and when this variable is controlled for, greater self-determination is mainly related to receiving occupational support and support for autonomy and independent living. Results also showed that, together with ID severity, occupational and psychoeducational support, as well as support for autonomy and independent living, were also predictors of the level of self-determination. In conclusion, this study confirms the importance of contextual variables in the development of self-determination in people with ID, placing the focus of intervention on social opportunities. Visibles is a series of documentaries that premiered on December 3, 2022, International Day for Disability, on public television Telemadrid. The series consists of six thematic chapters focused on various topics: work, sports, art, music and technology. This research analyzes the media representation of people with disabilities in the Visibles TV program with the aim of finding out the representation of the different types of disabilities (physical, mental and sensory) and comparing them with the official data of the Community of Madrid. For the analysis we will use a qualitative methodology based on the framing theory and a quantitative one based on statistical studies. The result of the Chi-square test indicated that the media treatment of Visibles was similar between protagonists of both genders (p value of 0.2055). Regarding the representation of the different disabilities, we conclude that Visibles generated a greater visibility of people with mental disabilities (50.5%) than of people with other disabilities (physical: 32.6% and sensory: 15.8%) with with respect to the pattern of the Community of Madrid (psychic: 36.2%, sensory: 12.3% and physical: 51.7%). According to the framing theory, this was due to the need to normalize the inclusiveness of the group of people with intellectual disabilities in the various work environments in today's Spanish society. People with intellectual disabilities have a need for personal and social development that is often unknown or poorly understood. The main motivation is the fact that students belong to a group usually excluded from the ordinary educational process. That process is replaced with measures that focus on caring for students rather than promoting their development. The objective of this research is to understand the expectations for personal development and decision-making of students with intellectual disabilities. To achieve the stated objective, a qualitative research based on two complementary approaches, grounded theory and case study, has been employed. The sample (n = 28) was drawn from a specific study program for the training and development of people with intellectual disabilities at the University of Murcia, called "We are all Campus". We aim to identify the different perceptions of their reality and potential for personal development, to understand their decision-making and what motivates them. Likewise, we investigate the self-perceptions of students with intellectual disabilities have and their understanding of their future life expectations. The main conclusions show that the training program represents an opportunity for students' progression and personal development. Aim: This paper describes the steps of a protocol for developing and assessing a non-pharmacological intervention, specifically a Serious Game, with the goal of improving eight cognitive skills in adults with Intellectual Disabilities. Serious games that focus on one deficit and/or are restricted to one disorder have been developed to improve the cognitive skills of people with Intellectual Disabilities. There is a lack of a single tool that targets various cognitive skills as well as a broader spectrum of disorders.Purpose: The presentation of the protocol which describes the steps of developing a new Serious Game that will be evaluated in a randomised control trial intervention.Participants and Methods: The protocol is divided into three stages: identification of cognitive deficits and development of the Serious Game, randomised control trial intervention- follow up assessment, and evaluation of the Serious Game by trainers and caregivers. The participants of the intervention are adults with Intellectual Disabilities.Results: The protocol's results are expected to cover the development of a new Serious Game for specific cognitive functions of a mixed group of adults with Intellectual Disabilities, evaluating the structure and content of the game through neuropsychological assessments for participants and specific questionnaires for trainers and caregivers, evaluating the improvement of specific cognitive abilities in participants in the intervention; and measuring the possible improvement of the quality of life and social interaction of people with Intellectual Disabilities.Conclusion: This is the first study to develop a protocol and implement and assess this new Serious Game. This Serious Game is expected to assist people with Intellectual Disabilities in cognitive and social aspects.Plain Language Summary: What is the main purpose of this study protocol? The main purpose of this publication is to present the mixed-method study protocol created by the Game4CoSkills project. Following this protocol, a new mobile Serious Game, the Game4CoSkills, was developed with the goal of improving eight cognitive skills in adults with Intellectual Disabilities. The game will be used as an interventional tool by participants, and its effectiveness will be evaluated. They also interact with health professionals and play the game, as they test the new mobile Serious Game for the first time. Following the six-month trial period, both the intervention and control groups will undergo neuropsychological testing to determine the game's effectiveness. Following the follow-up assessment, the trainers and caregivers will provide feedback on the game through two structured questionnaires. Adults with ID may benefit from their participation. &e issues raised in this article are not often mentioned in the source literature. Available studies demonstrate that partnership issues for people with intellectual disabilities appear to be among the ignored problems. Empirical evidence indicates the participation of people with disabilities in the realization of these roles, but their realization is burdened with di)culties resulting from individual predispositions and social conditions. I am directing my research on partner relationships towards a constructivist-interpretative paradigm based on ontological relativism (the multiplicity of meanings given to the category of relationship can be observed at this point, arising in subjective reconstructions--statements--of the people surveyed), subjective epistemology (arising in the course of the research, which is co-created by the cognitor and the subject), and the naturalism of methodological procedures, which means the rejection of advanced statistics in favor of cognition of the true experiences of the subjects. I have assumed a qualitative nature for the research and the biographical method was used. &e research aimed to answer the questions: How are the relationships of people with intellectual disabilities understood? What meaning do people with intellectual disabilities assign to love and relationships and their own intimate relations (sexuality)? A literal linguistic analysis of the statements of those tested with the Atlas.ti software is presented in the results. &e article depicts the way people with intellectual disabilities describe their relationships, how they feel in the relationships they create, and thus, what linguistic means of expression they use to communicate their intentions and expectations with respect to their partner.
