The objective of this article is to enhance the dc insulation strength of poly- ${m}$ -phenylene isophthalamide (PMIA) paper by surface treatment. CF4/Ar plasma is used to modify the surface of PMIA paper by fluorination, and the effects of fluorination on the microstructure, electrical parameters, and insulation properties of the material are investigated, and the optimized treatment parameters of CF4 concentration and treatment time are obtained, and the mechanism is further explained from the perspective of carrier traps. The results show that the moderate CF4/Ar plasma treatment can improve the surface insulation properties of PMIA paper without damaging its overall insulation properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The surface charge and space charge accumulation in paper used in oil–paper insulation system may distort electric field distribution and lead to the flashover and breakdown of insulation system. In this paper, the effect of gas-phase fluorination on the surface charge and space charge characteristics of oil-impregnated Nomex paper was investigated. Nomex T410 was fluorinated at 25 °C using F2/N2 mixtures with 20% F2 in volume at 0.05 MPa for 15, 30 and 45 min. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) proved that the molecular chain scission and cleavage occurred during gas-phase fluorination. Furthermore, the surface charge and space charge characteristic of the original and fluorinated oil-impregnated paper were measured using an electrostatic voltmeter and Pulsed Electroacoustic (PEA) equipment respectively. Furthermore, the hole and electron trap distribution of the samples were obtained by Isothermal Surface Potential Decay (ISPD) model. The results showed that both the positive and negative charge decay rates were accelerated by gas-phase fluorination and the hole, electron trap energy and density of the fluorinated samples were reduced by fluorination. It is suggested that the space charge dissipation was also accelerated by fluorination, indicating that gas-phase fluorination is an effective approach to modify the charge dynamics of oil-impregnated Nomex paper. The oil-impregnated paper, as a vital part in the oil-paper insulation system, serves as the main insulation medium in converter transformer suffering various electric fields. However, the accumulated surface charge on the paper would accelerate the degradation of insulation system and may lead to surface flashover. Direct-fluorination is a method to change the chemical components of polymer matrix thus could affect the surface property of the dielectric material without the alternation of bulk property. This paper presents a method to modify the surface structure of the paper applied in transformers. The paper used in the experiment was treated using the F2/N2 mixture with a volume fraction of 10% for the F2 gas at a pressure of 0.05 MPa in a reaction vessel for 2, 5, 10 and 15 min, respectively. The chemical elements, functional group and physical morphology of the paper before and after modification were measured with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) and scanning electron micrographs (SEM), respectively. Surface and volume resistivity of the fluorinated paper were measured. Furthermore, the surface charge property of the oil-impregnated paper was measured under various positive and negative voltages. Obtained results showed that the fluorination had an obvious influence on the chemical property and surface structure of the paper leading to the reduction of surface and volume resistivity. The treatment was shown to reduce the initial potential and cause acceleration in charge decay process. The trap distribution of the paper surface presented alternation as well. The oil-impregnated paper, which is the major section in converter transformer, plays a considerable role in the reliability and safety of power grid. However, the insulation degradation will be accelerated by the accumulation of charges that are on the surface of oil-impregnated paper. Therefore, the operating overvoltage occurs and irremediable damage will appear. Direct fluorination is an effective method of modifying the chemical components of polymer matrix so as to have effects on the surface characteristic of the insulating material without reforming the bulk properties. In this research, for studying effects of fluorination on charge behavior on the surface of oil-impregnated paper under the application of DC and impulse voltage, the F2/N2 compound, which the volume fraction for the F2 gas occupied 10 % and the pressure was 0.05 MPa in a reaction kettle for 5, 30 and 60 min respectively, was applied. Meanwhile, the chemical bond groups and the surface morphology of the fluorinated specimen were tested. Besides, the DC voltage amplitude was 4 kV and the applied time was 4 min. The impulse frequency was 500 Hz and the impulse voltage amplitude was 1, 2, 3 and 4 kV, respectively. The charge properties under various situations were investigated. From the research under the application of different fluorination time, impulse voltage amplitudes and polarities, conclusions can be drawn that, fluorination has significant effects on the chemical structure properties and surface characteristic of oil-impregnated paper. Furthermore, the initial potential can be reduced and the decay process of surface charge can be accelerated with different fluorination time increasing from 0 to 30 min. Nevertheless, the tendency is the opposite when the fluorination time continuously extends from 30 to 60 min. The trap distribution also exhibits alternation through the fluorination. Gurenko et al. (Contrib Mineral Petrol 162:349-363, ) report laser-assisted fluorination (LF) and secondary ionization mass spectrometry (SIMS) O/O datasets for olivine grains from the Canary Islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. As with prior studies of oxygen isotopes in Canary Island lavas (e.g. Thirlwall et al. Chem Geol 135:233-262, ; Day et al. Geology 37:555-558, , Geochim Cosmochim Acta 74:6565-6589, ), these authors find variations in δO (~4.6-6.0 ‰) beyond that measured for mantle peridotite olivine (Mattey et al. Earth Planet Sci Lett 128:231-241, ) and interpret this variation to reflect contributions from pyroxenite-peridotite mantle sources. Furthermore, Gurenko et al. (Contrib Mineral Petrol 162:349-363, ) speculate that δO values for La Palma olivine grains measured by LF (Day et al. Geology 37:555-558, , Geochim Cosmochim Acta 74:6565-6589, ) may be biased to low values due to the presence of altered silicate, possibly serpentine. The range in δO values for Canary Island lavas are of importance for constraining their origin. Gurenko et al. (Contrib Mineral Petrol 162:349-363, ) took a subset (39 SIMS analyses from 13 grains from a single El Hierro lava; EH4) of a more extensive dataset (321 SIMS analyses from 110 grains from 16 Canary Island lavas) to suggest that δO is weakly correlated ( R = 0.291) with the parameter used by Gurenko et al. (Earth Planet Sci Lett 277:514-524, ) to describe the estimated weight fraction of pyroxenite-derived melt ( Xpx). With this relationship, end-member δO values for HIMU-peridotite (δO = 5.3 ± 0.3 ‰) and depleted pyroxenite (δO = 5.9 ± 0.3 ‰) were defined. Although the model proposed by Gurenko et al. (Contrib Mineral Petrol 162:349-363, ) implicates similar pyroxenite-peridotite mantle sources to those proposed by Day et al. (Geology 37:555-558, , Geochim Cosmochim Acta 74:6565-6589, ) and Day and Hilton (Earth Planet Sci Lett 305:226-234, ), there are significant differences in the predicted δO values of end member components in the two models. In particular, Day et al. (Geochim Cosmochim Acta 74:6565-6589, ) proposed a mantle source for La Palma lavas with low-δO (<5 ‰), rather than higher-δO (c.f. the HIMU-peridotite composition of Gurenko et al. in Contrib Mineral Petrol 162:349-363, ). Here we question the approach of using weakly correlated variations in δO and the Xpx parameter to define mantle source oxygen isotope compositions, and provide examples of why this approach appears flawed. We also provide reasons why the LF datasets previously published for Canary Island lavas remain robust and discuss why LF and SIMS data may provide complementary information on oxygen isotope variations in ocean island basalts (OIB), despite unresolved small-scale uncertainties associated with both techniques. In this paper, fluorinated compounds based on sulfolane, cyclopentanone, and gamma-butyrolactone are studied computationally, focusing on their applicability in electrochemical devices and acid–base-related studies. Candidates for solvents with (1) high polarity, (2) good electrochemical stability, and (3) low basicity were searched for. Some of the compounds are studied here for the first time. Electrochemical stabilities, dielectric constants, boiling points, basicities, and lipophilicities were estimated using DFT and COSMO-RS methods with empirical corrections. The effect of fluorination on these properties as well as the bond parameters was studied. The possible synthesis routes of the proposed compounds are outlined. Some molecules display a combination of estimated properties favorable for a solvent, although none of the studied compounds are expected to surpass acetonitrile and propylene carbonate by the width of the electrochemical stability window. Surface fluorination with pure F2 gas can easily make the surface on PP (polypropylene) hydrophobic, and it causes limited dyeability, as reported in a previous paper. In this study, to produce a more hydrophilic surface, surface fluorination of PP was performed at 25 °C, total gas pressure of 13.3 kPa, and reaction time of 1 h using F2 and O2 mixtures with different proportions of F2 gas. The surface roughness of the fluorinated PP samples was about 1.5 times higher than that of the untreated sample (5 nm). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that the PP-derived bonds (-C-C- and -CHx) decreased because they were converted into polar groups (-C–O, -CHF-, and -CFx), which increased the surface electronegativity of the PP. The variation in the F2 gas proportion in the gas mixture significantly affected the hydrophilicity and surface composition of the PP. At F2 gas proportions of <70%, the hydrophilicity of the fluorinated PP samples was increased. Notably, the hydrophilic and negatively charged PP surface enhanced the dyeing of the polymer with basic methylene blue (MB). In contrast, at F2 gas proportions of >90%, the PP surface became hydrophobic owing to increased numbers of hydrophobic -CF3 bonds. The purification of perfluoro(7-methylbicyclo[4.3.0]nonane) industrial fractions with a component content above 0.950 in mass fraction is not effective and requires the use of special separation methods. According to experimental data, the separation factor of the initial mixture during distillation with no additional substances is close to 1. At the same time, the addition of acetone (Ac) makes it possible to significantly intensify the process. Ac allowed for obtaining MBCN with a purity higher than 0.998 in mass fraction in one separation cycle, and the degree of recovery was more than 0.85 by weight. Several fluorinated polyethylene surface studies have proved that the fluorination reaction can effectively prevent charge from being injected into polyethylene. Therefore, this paper explores the influence of fluorinated electrode on space charge behavior in polyethylene. In this study, the space charge distribution inside polyethylene is measured by laser-PWP (Pressure Wave Propagation) method while altering electrode fluorination duration and fluorination temperature. The experimental results show that measured homocharge injection is increased in polyethylene to which a fluorinated semiconductive electrode is heat pressed. Attenuated Total Reflectance-Infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) are also performed, revealing that the fluorinated layer of semiconductive electrode on the interface between polyethylene and electrode block impurities from entering polyethylene. The measured space charge distribution, being the planar average amount, also reveals impurity generation since heterocharge formation is observed. As such impurities are blocked, in the meantime the electrodes' homocharge injection remains un-affected, thereby the measured apparent charge is greatly increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface charge accumulation on insulators under high dc voltage is a major factor that may lead to the reduction of insulation levels in gas insulated devices. In this paper, disc insulators made of Al2O3-filled epoxy resin were surface fluorinated using a F2/N2 mixture (12.5% F2) at 50 °C and 0.1 MPa for different durations of 15 min, 30 min and 60 min. A dc voltage was applied to the insulator for 30 min and the charge density on its surface was measured by an electrostatic probe. The results revealed significant lower surface charge densities on the fluorinated insulators in comparison with the original one. Surface conductivity measurements indicated a higher surface conductivity by over three orders of magnitude after fluorination, which would allow the charges to transfer along the surface and thus may suppress their accumulation. Further, attenuated total reflection infrared analysis and surface morphology observations of the samples revealed that the introduction of fluoride groups altered the surface physicochemical properties. These structure changes, especially the physical defects reduced the depth of charge traps in the surface layer, which was verified by the measurement of energy distributions of the electron and hole traps based on the isothermal current theory. The results in this paper demonstrate that fluorination can be a promising and effective method to suppress surface charge accumulation on epoxy insulators in gas insulated devices. This paper presents a study on structural and mechanical properties of a series of fluorinated armchair single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by using density functional theory. At the PBE / SVP level, the data obtained compare well with experimental and theoretical studies. The results show that fluorination, in general, distort SWNCTs framework, but there exists the difference between 'axial' and 'circumferential' functionalization. It turns out that elastic properties diminish with increasing concentration of adsorbents, however, the fluorinated SWCNTs remain strong enough to be suitable for reinforcement of composites. Epoxy resin is the main material of spacer in a gas insulated transmission line and other gas-insulated equipment. During long-term operation, the charge accumulates on the surface of the epoxy resin, which will distort the electric field and thus accelerate the failure of the insulation. In this paper, the surface of the epoxy resin was fluorinated by dielectric barrier discharge at different times. The surface physical, chemical, and flashover properties of the samples before and after modification were measured. The results show that the method used in this paper can graft fluorine on the surface of the sample, change the surface roughness, and make the electron trap shallower and the hole trap deeper. The appropriate modification time can reduce the charge accumulation on the surface, hinder the formation of flashover channels, and improve the surface flashover voltage, showing potential for use in the improvement of the insulating performance of insulating materials. The present communication substantiates the need to develop a new technology of processing titanium-containing concentrates. This technology uses three main processes: fluorination of rutile with elemental fluorine, an electrolytic reduction of the obtained titanium tetrafluoride in a low-melting eutectic melt of fluoride salts of alkali metals (LiFKF- NaF) and washing-off of the synthesized titanium powder from the molten electrolyte salts. The studies performed using ASTRA software show that the process of fluorination of rutile concentrates has no thermodynamic limitations. The time dependences of the change of the rutile fluorination degree are given in the temperature range of 580 K - 830 K. The mathematical processing of the experimental results shows that the process is limited by diffusion factors – the approach of the fluorinating agent to the surface of the solid material. The electrolytic production of titanium powders is carried out using fluoride melts with titanium tetrafluoride as a consumable reagent. TiF4 concentration in the eutectic of fluoride salts of alkali metals is 7.75 % (3 % in respect to Ti). Since the electrolytic potential of titanium extraction is much less than that of the fluoride salt, the process of titanium reduction proceeds with a high efficiency. The yield of titanium in terms of current efficiency (ηt, %) is at least 93 % at a cathode current density of 0.4 A/cm2. It practically does not change with a further increase of the current density. The washing-off of the titanium-containing cathode deposit is carried out with anhydrous HF as well. The benefits of HF washing are shown in the paper. The impurities content of the titanium powder obtained by the fluoride method is lower than that of the titanium sponge synthesized by the Kroll process. This is due to the impurities’ dissolution in anhydrous HF during the process of the washing-off. The reagent used is recycled when the step of the cathode deposit washing-off with anhydrous HF is commercially implemented. Composite dielectrics with excellent electrical properties are integral to today's energy industries and power infrastructure. Epoxy resin filled with inorganic nano-fillers has been extensively studied for its excellent performances. In this paper, barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles are selected as the fillers and fluorinated by plasma treatment. The morphology, element content and chemical bond of BaTiO3 and fluorinated BaTiO3 fillers are characterized by SEM, EDS, XPS and FTIR, respectively. The influence of filler concentration and fluorination on flashover voltage of epoxy resin composites was studied. We found that the fluorinated BTO could improve the compatibility of filler and matrix and surface insulation of epoxy resin composites. Finally, the relationship between filler concentration, dielectric constant, fluorination treatment and charge dissipation was analyzed, and the trap distribution on the surface of composites was calculated by isothermal surface potential decay method. In view of the significant performance improvement of unfilled epoxy insulators by direct fluorination, and the fact that all spacers in SF 6 gas insulated systems are alumina-filled epoxy composites, to promote the application of the method for improving the performance of epoxy spacers, in this paper, alumina-filled epoxy (composite) and unfilled epoxy (pure) samples were prepared with the same formulation and process as those for epoxy spacers. The pure and composite epoxy samples were fluorinated under the same conditions, and comparative studies were performed on their surface physicochemical characteristics and properties. IR analysis and SEM imaging show no obvious influence of alumina particles on the fluorination of the epoxy matrix under the used fluorination conditions, while many nanoparticles and agglomerates appear on the surface and large microsized particles in the SEM imaging depth become less visible after the composite epoxy sample was fluorinated. Contact angle and electrical property measurements indicate that like the pure epoxy sample, surface hydrophilicity and surface conduction of the composite epoxy sample are also increased by the fluorination, while the increase in surface hydrophilicity or surface conduction is more significant or less significant, compared to the pure epoxy sample. Two bismuth oxyfluorides, BiOF and BiO0.5F2, have been prepared by soft chemistry. These two compounds are of interest for application as new type of positive electrode active materials in secondary lithium battery. BiOF was obtained directly from the fluorination of Bi2O3 by a saturated aqueous solution of NH4F. BiO0.5F2 was obtained by the hydrolysis of β-NH4BiF4 at 70°C. The ammonium bismuth fluoride β-NH4BiF4, which is a new orthorhombic form of NH4BiF4, was obtained by reacting BiF3 in a saturated aqueous solution of NH4F. Two other ammonium bismuth fluorides, (NH4)0.5BiF3.5 and NH4Bi3F10, were also prepared by annealing β-NH4BiF4 at a relatively low temperature under inert atmosphere. As one kind of the basic insulating materials, polyimide has been widely used in turn to turn insulation and turn to ground insulation in inverter-fed motors. However, the pulse voltage from the converter often causes overvoltage and localized high electrical field in the insulation system. During applying the pulse voltage, charges accumulate on the surface of the insulator, which could affect the dielectric property and cause the breakdown of insulation. Direct fluorination is a method to modify the surface layer of the polymers without changing the bulk properties. As a result of the fluorination, hydrogen atoms are replaced by the fluorine atoms and the component of the polymer surface is changed, which can influence the surface charge accumulation and affect the electrical properties. The experiment in this paper was focused on the effect of pulse duration and pulse number on surface charge of the polyimide films. The polyimide films with the fluorination time of 0, 15, 45 and 60 min were prepared. Surface charging was performed by corona discharging using repetitive pulse power at the temperature of 20 °C with the relative humidity of ~15%. The repetition frequency was 1 kHz and the pulse duration was 50, 110 and 210 μs, respectively. The surface charge decay was measured using a specific probe coupled with an electrostatic voltmeter. Highlights: By introducing fluorine modulation into MXene, a new MXene-derived material TiOF/Ti3C2 was successfully synthesized with a distinctive three-dimensional structure and a tailored F distribution. In situ characterizations and electrochemical analyses demonstrate that TiOF/Ti3C2 catalysts effectively coupled the multiphase sulfur species conversion processes. The investigations reveal that the theoretical basis of the fluorine catalysis in Li–S batteries originated from Lewis acid–base mechanisms and charge compensation mechanisms. Fluorine owing to its inherently high electronegativity exhibits charge delocalization and ion dissociation capabilities; as a result, there has been an influx of research studies focused on the utilization of fluorides to optimize solid electrolyte interfaces and provide dynamic protection of electrodes to regulate the reaction and function performance of batteries. Nonetheless, the shuttle effect and the sluggish redox reaction kinetics emphasize the potential bottlenecks of lithium–sulfur batteries. Whether fluorine modulation regulate the reaction process of Li–S chemistry? Here, the TiOF/Ti3C2 MXene nanoribbons with a tailored F distribution were constructed via an NH4F fluorinated method. Relying on in situ characterizations and electrochemical analysis, the F activates the catalysis function of Ti metal atoms in the consecutive redox reaction. The positive charge of Ti metal sites is increased due to the formation of O–Ti–F bonds based on the Lewis acid–base mechanism, which contributes to the adsorption of polysulfides, provides more nucleation sites and promotes the cleavage of S–S bonds. This facilitates the deposition of Li2S at lower overpotentials. Additionally, fluorine has the capacity to capture electrons originating from Li2S dissolution due to charge compensation mechanisms. The fluorine modulation strategy holds the promise of guiding the construction of fluorine-based catalysts and facilitating the seamless integration of multiple consecutive heterogeneous catalytic processes. With the advantages of excellent physical, chemical and thermal properties, polyimide (PI) film has been widely used as insulation material in electrical and mechanical equipment. However, PI presents water absorption capacity because of the existence of carbonyl and amine groups in the molecular chain. When exposed in moisture conditions, PI film will be degraded. Therefore, the dielectric breakdown occurs and irremediable damage will appear in insulation system. The dielectric properties of PI film are largely influenced by the absorbed water and humidity. Direct fluorination is an effective method of surface modification which can improve the properties of original material from many respects, such as the wettability, barrier properties and chemical stability. In this paper, to study effects of fluorination on dielectric properties of moistened PI films, the PI specimens were surface fluorinated for 15, 30, 45 and 60 min respectively. The specimens without fluorination were also prepared for the contrast. Then the specimens were immersed in high purity water for 6, 12 and 24 hours. The water absorption, permittivity and breakdown strength under different fluorination and immersion time were measured. Meanwhile, given that the existence of surface charge had a critical influence on the breakdown characteristics, the corona charging tests were conducted at room temperature and the charge dissipation was investigated. Obtained results show that fluorination can reduce the water intake capacity and enhance the breakdown strength of PI in moisture conditions. In this research paper, we report a method able to detect perfluorinated compound at pg·L−1 levels in superficial and underground water samples. An online solid phase extraction HPLC-MS/MS method was developed for the analysis of 12 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFASs). The method is based on injection of 5000 µL of water sample in SPE online WAX column followed by chromatography separation and mass spectrometry determination. SPE online elution was performed by water + 0.05% NH4OH and methanol + 0.05% NH4OH, while separation of target compounds was achieved within 10 min by Gemini chromatographic column operating from 1 to 12 pH range and using a mixture of water-methanol + 0.05% NH4OH. Sub ng·L−1 method detection limits (from 0.2 to 5 ng·L−1), linearity (from 0.2 to 250 ng·L−1), accuracy (from 80 to 120%), and precision (RSD less than 15% at LOQs levels) were achieved. The method is capable of measuring PFAS at trace levels, but above all it can reach the limit of 200 pg·L−1 required by European regulation for PFOS determination in surface and underground waters. The combinational use of one-dimensional (1D) NMR-based screening techniques with ¹H and 19F detections were applied to a human serum albumin--diflunisal complex. Since most NMR screening methods observe ¹H spectra, the overlapped ¹H signals were unavailable in the binding epitope mapping. However, the NMR experiments with 19F detection can be used as an effective complementary method. For the purpose of identifying the ¹H and 19F binding epitopes of diflunisal, this paper carries out a combinatorial analysis using ¹H{¹H} and 19F{¹H} saturation transfer difference experiments. The differences of the ¹H-inversion recovery rates with and without target irradiation are also analyzed for a comprehensive interpretation of binding epitope mapping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
