Currently, there has been no direct assessment of mobile phone screen size in the home setting and its effect on nomophobia and related symptoms, such as insomnia. Thus, we investigated the association between nomophobia, insomnia, and mobile phone screen size in a young adult population in Bahrain.Patients and Methods: Using a descriptive, cross-sectional design, we surveyed participants aged 18 to 35 between August and September 2020 using an online questionnaire. Participants completed demographic questions and questions about personal mobile phones, the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q), and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). The mobile phone screen size was determined using an open-source online database. Crude and adjusted regression analyses were fitted to examine the associations between the study variables.Results: A total of 549 individuals, 54% females, were included in the final analyses. One hundred and fourteen participants (21%) had severe nomophobia, and 81 (14%) had clinical insomnia. A strong positive pair-wise linear association was observed between NMP-Q and ISI β 0.15, P = 0.001. Age, sex, BMI, and mobile phone screen size showed no association with the NMP-Q.Conclusion: Nomophobia is very prevalent in young adult men and women, and it is closely associated with insomnia, regardless of mobile phone screen size, suggesting that mobile phone screen size should not be used as a proxy for hazardous usage.Keywords: blue light, insomnia, ISI, no mobile phone phobia, problematic smartphone use, sleep problems

Strong evidence supporting the top-down modulation of attention has come from studies in which participants learned to suppress a singleton in a heterogeneous four-item display. These studies have been criticized on the grounds that the displays are so sparse that the singleton is not actually salient. We argue that similar evidence of suppression has been found with substantially larger displays where salience is not in question. Additionally, we examine the results of applying salience models to four-item displays, and find prominent markers of salience at the location of the singleton. We conclude that small heterogeneous displays do not preclude strong salience signals. Beyond that, we reflect on how further basic research on salience may speed resolution of the attentional capture debate.

Responsive web design is a website design that can adjust each size on each device. Based on the results of several respondents, 60% of respondents agreed that some websites were not able to adjust the display size on the web, 50% of respondents agreed that design affects the convenience factor, 58% of respondents agreed that the main content and functionality of websites that are difficult to access via mobile devices, 53% of respondents agreed that the appearance of a website that was not attractive had a bad effect on the comfort factor of the respondents, 50% of respondents also agreed that the website was not able to adjust the size on every mobile device. From the results of this review, it can be concluded that an unresponsive website greatly affects the inconvenience of users in accessing information through the website.

The rapid development of technology, especially in the digital field, has had a huge influence on the development of laptop features and specifications today. With the development of increasingly diverse features and specifications, it often makes users confused in choosing a laptop that suits user needs. Based on this, the authors are interested in creating a decision support system to assist users in choosing a laptop that fits the desired criteria using the Topsis method. The type of data used by the author is primary data obtained through interviews and direct observation of laptop users. The purpose of this study is to assist laptop users in choosing a laptop that suits their needs. There are 10 criteria obtained based on observations and interviews, namely price (C1), RAM (C2), Hard drive (C3), processor (C4), screen size (C5), VGA (C6), battery (C7), Laptop Weight (C8), and Warranty (C9). Secondary data were obtained through literature study and scientific writing related to laptop selection and the TOPSIS method. This research produces output that meets the objectives, which can assist users in choosing the laptop that best suits their needs and can facilitate users in the decision-making process so as to produce accurate, effective and efficient information.

Objectives: Computer usage has rapidly grown. This is because it helps to resolve problems, i.e., encountered in daily life by individuals. Various monitor screens that have been developed affect the user’s eyes. Screen size is one of the relevant impacts. Thus, this study compared the immediate effects of two computer screen sizes on visual fatigue in Video Display Terminal (VDT) users. Methods: Twenty female VDT users participated in this study. Using a randomized block design for the study, the study participants randomly drew a ballot to determine the order of using an 18.5-inch and 23-inch computer screen size. The research participants were assessed by a visual fatigue score, critical flicker frequency, and dry eye score before and after using both computer screen sizes. They were tested in an ergonomic computer workstation for 2 hours. Besides, where they rested between each workstation for ≥30 minutes or until presetting no eye fatigue symptoms. The relevant data were compared between before and after using the computers and between the two different screen sizes. Results: The collected results suggested no significant difference in the visual fatigue score, critical flicker frequency, and dry eye score between using either computer screen sizes (P>0.05). Mobile- and web-based psychological research are a valuable addition to the set of tools available for scientific study, reducing logistical barriers for research participation and allowing the recruitment of larger and more diverse participant groups. However, this comes at the cost of reduced control over the technology used by participants, which can introduce new sources of variability into study results. In this study, we examined differences in measured performance on timed and untimed cognitive tests between users of common digital devices in 59,587 (Study 1) and 3818 (Study 2) visitors to TestMyBrain.org , a web-based cognitive testing platform. Controlling for age, gender, educational background, and cognitive performance on an untimed vocabulary test, users of mobile devices, particularly Android smartphones, showed significantly slower performance on tests of reaction time than users of laptop and desktop computers, suggesting that differences in device latency affect measured reaction times. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers are facing unprecedented challenges that affect our ability to run in-person experiments. With mandated social distancing in a controlled laboratory environment, many researchers are searching for alternative options to conduct research, such as online experimentation. However, online experimentation comes at a cost; learning online tools for building and publishing psychophysics experiments can be complicated and time-consuming. This learning cost is unfortunate because researchers typically only need to use a small percentage of these tools' capabilities, but they still have to deal with these systems' complexities (e.g., complex graphical user interfaces or difficult programming languages). Furthermore, after the experiment is built, researchers often have to find an online platform compatible with the tool they used to program the experiment. To simplify and streamline the online process of programming and hosting an experiment, I have created SimplePhy. SimplePhy can save researchers' time and energy by allowing them to create a study in just a few clicks. All researchers have to do is select among a few experiment settings and upload the stimuli. SimplePhy is able to run most psychophysical perception experiments that require mouse clicks and button presses. In addition to collecting online behavioral data, SimplePhy can also collect information regarding the estimated viewing distance between the participant and the monitor, the screen size, and the experimental trial's timing-features not always offered in other online platforms. Overall, SimplePhy is a simple, free, open-source tool (code can be found here: https://gitlab.com/malago/simplephy ) aimed to help labs conduct their experiments online.

This study aims to assess, the extent to which students at Northern Frontier University, accept learning by phone during quarantine, to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus. Results of unified theory of acceptance and use of technology model (UTAUT model), indicated that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, perceived playfulness and self-management of learning, were all significant determinants of behavioural intention to use m-learning. Age differences did not moderate the effects of effort expectancy and social influence on m-learning use intention, nor gender differences moderated the effects of social influence and self-management of learning on m-learning use intention. The small screen size and difficulty of typing on a mobile keyboard are among the most important difficulties of m-learning. These findings revealed that decisionmakers, in the higher education sector, could use mobile learning to develop distance learning, especially in supplementary programs.

Rapid scientific and technological advances in the field of ubiquitous computing have stimulated the gradual popularization of handheld devices. Mobile devices, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and smartphones, are being used increasingly to accomplish tasks originally performed by desktop computers (e.g., viewing emails, writing documents, watching movies and television programs, and following stock markets). Although mobile devices offer the convenience of portability, their displays are very different from those of desktop computers. Due to the size limitations of handheld devices, only a limited amount of information can be displayed at one time. Users are challenged by the need to efficiently read large blocks of text or handle multiple tasks simultaneously on the screens of small devices as opposed to the larger screens on desktop computers. Numerous studies have identified one possible means of overcoming the limitations of small screen size; namely, by using dynamic displays in which the material on-screen moves (Kolers, Duchnicky, & Ferguson, 1981; Sekey & Tietz, 1982; Juola, Tiritoglu, & Pleunis, 1995; Rahman & Muter, 1999; Bernard, Chaparro, & Russell, 2001; Wang & Kan, 2004; Chen & Chien, 2005a, 2005b; Shieh & Hsu, 2005). The difference between static and dynamic displays is that the display space can be traded for time to present temporal information dynamically (de Bruijn, Spence, & Chong, 2002). Advances in information technologies have resulted in people spending increasing amounts of time staring at electronic screens. Long-term use of computers, mobile phones, and tablets can cause eye soreness and fatigue, but can also cause more serious conditions including myopia, cataracts, and glaucoma. This study assesses changes in brain wave activity detected by eight electrodes targeting different brain regions to identify and assess the brain wave patterns in the regions associated with visual fatigue under various visual presentation methods. Furthermore, linear discriminant analysis and Min–Max scaling techniques are applied to develop a visual fatigue assessment model to quantify visual fatigue. Finally, experiments are run to assess the impact of screen size (smartphone, tablet, computer) and visual presentation mode (2D, 3D, AR, VR) on visual fatigue. This study finds that (1) the brain wave features which influence the reaction to 2D and 3D imaging are the delta and theta waves at the prefrontal Fp1 and Fp2 poles. When viewing AR images, the alpha bands at the O1 and O2 poles of the occipital lobe show a relatively clear impact, while the delta and theta waves at the C3 pole in the left center area are associated with VR images; (2) larger screens cause greater visual fatigue, indicating that excessive visual stimulation will increase visual loading and thus produce greater visual fatigue; (3) the results show that VR can cause quite severe visual fatigue, along with motion sickness passed on sensory mismatch. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid viewing experiences that are inconsistent with the brain’s physiological experience, such as walking while viewing a mobile phone, or reading in a moving car. The proposed visual fatigue assessment model provides easy and objective quantification of visual fatigue indicators, contributing to the reduction of risk for eye injury and disease.

In the development of the technology, the variety of notebook has become diverse. It can be differed by its rice, model, type, and functionality, such as weight, screen size, processor, hard disk, memory (RAM), and graphic card. All of that diversity has become the consideration by the one who looking for a notebook. There has a problem where the buyer is so confused in deciding which notebook that is suitable with their needs. Decision support system is considered as one of the solutions to handle that kind of problem. Fuzzy Tahani Algorithm that uses the relative and qualitative natural language as the user input criteria is believed to be able to help the notebook buyer in making the decision. The result is shown that the decision support system for purchasing multi criteria product such as notebook, based on the user input criteria with the Fuzzy Tahani algorithm, is able to help the user to get the alternative product that can be recommended to them.

Student council election is a routine school activity every year, but currently the student council election is done manually using ballot papers containing the candidates. The weakness of this system is in addition to the process of getting longer results, it is also prone to fraud due to the excess of manipulated ballot papers, as well as being less environmentally friendly. Therefore the need for a system that is able to provide solutions to these problems, one of which is a responsive web-based student council election system. Web-based systems are more common than mobile-based systems, because they are supported by all device platforms, different if only based on mobile (Android), only devices based on the Android operating system can use the application. Moreover, web technology is now very good, responsive web allows the display of web pages to adjust to the user's screen size automatically, responsive web framework used in this study is bootstrap. In this study, researchers used a software development model which is a prototype. And for the tools used in developing this application is the Unified Modeling Language, and the system testing method uses a blackbox. While online experiments have shown tremendous potential to study larger and more diverse participant samples than is possible in the lab, the uncontrolled online environment has prohibited many types of psychophysical studies due to difficulties controlling the viewing distance and stimulus size. We introduce the Virtual Chinrest, a method that measures a participant’s viewing distance in the web browser by detecting a participant’s blind spot location. This makes it possible to automatically adjust stimulus configurations based on an individual’s viewing distance. We validated the Virtual Chinrest in two laboratory studies in which we varied the viewing distance and display size, showing that our method estimates participants’ viewing distance with an average error of 3.25 cm. We additionally show that by using the Virtual Chinrest we can reliably replicate measures of visual crowding, which depends on a precise calculation of visual angle, in an uncontrolled online environment. An online experiment with 1153 participants further replicated the findings of prior laboratory work, demonstrating how visual crowding increases with eccentricity and extending this finding by showing that young children, older adults and people with dyslexia all exhibit increased visual crowding, compared to adults without dyslexia. Our method provides a promising pathway to web-based psychophysical research requiring controlled stimulus geometry.

Inspired by cartographic generalization principles, we present a generalization technique for rendering line charts at different sizes, preserving the important semantics of the data at that display size. The algorithm automatically determines the generalization operators to be applied at that size based on spatial density, distance, and the semantic importance of the various visualization elements in the line chart. A qualitative evaluation of the prototype that implemented the algorithm indicates that the generalized line charts pre-served the general data shape, while minimizing visual clutter. Wrist-worn devices hold great potential as a platform for mobile health (mHealth) applications because they comprise a familiar, convenient form factor and can embed sensors in proximity to the human body. Despite this potential, however, they are severely limited in battery life, storage, band-width, computing power, and screen size. In this paper, we describe the experience of the research and development team designing, implementing and evaluating Amulet - an open-hardware, open-software wrist-worn computing device - and its experience using Amulet to deploy mHealth apps in the field. In the past five years the team conducted 11 studies in the lab and in the field, involving 204 participants and collecting over 77,780 hours of sensor data. We describe the technical issues the team encountered and the lessons they learned, and conclude with a set of recommendations. We anticipate the experience described herein will be useful for the development of other research-oriented computing platforms. It should also be useful for researchers interested in developing and deploying mHealth applications, whether with the Amulet system or with other wearable platforms.

Augmented Reality (AR) combines real and virtual objects, provides opportunities for real-time interaction and provides accurate registration of 3D virtual and real objects. Mobile AR creates unique opportunities for gameplay unrestricted by the screen size of mobile devices with interactions possible between players, game objects and the real world. Since the launch of Pokemon Go in 2016, AR gaming has gone mainstream, several commercial mobile AR games have been launched, and researchers have conducted several studies on the motivations, intentions, and experiences associated with playing AR games. However, most studies in this area have focused on Pokemon Go, and have not included issues reported by players. This paper presents a study conducted with the aim of understanding issues, specifically those associated with the use of AR in games, that mobile AR game players face. User reviews for 10 popular commercial mobile AR games that utilise AR in all significant gameplay activities were gathered and analysed using Thematic Analysis to identify 11 themes of issues. This study adds to the body of knowledge and understanding of issues facing mobile AR game players and includes commercial mobile AR games other than Pokemon Go in the research on AR games.

Computerization of diagnostic neglect tests can deepen our knowledge of neglect specific abnormalities, by effortlessly providing additional behavioral markers that are hardly extractable from existing paper-and-pencil versions. However, so far it is not known whether the digitization and/or a change in size format impact neglect patients’ search behavior and test scores and thus require adjustments of cut-off criteria. We compared the Center of cancellation (CoC) measure of right hemisphere stroke patients with spatial neglect in two cancellation tasks across different modalities (paper-and-pencil vs. digital) and display sizes (small, medium, large). We found that the CoC measure did neither vary considerably between paper-and-pencil versus digital versions, nor between different digital size formats. The CoC derived from cancellation tasks thus seems robust to test digitization. A further aim of the present study was to evaluate three additional parameters of search behavior which became available through digitization. We observed slower search behavior, increased distance between two consecutively identified items, and signs of a more strategic search for neglect patients than control patients without neglect. Machine learning classifications indicated that – beyond the CoC measure – the latter three variables can help to differentiate stroke patients with spatial neglect from thosewithout.

Compared with other touch screen devices such as tablet PCs, mobile phones have smaller screens so that widgets on mobile phone screens are likely to be smaller. Widgets can be designed for devices with various screen sizes so that theoretical ID values in Eq. (2) are consistent among the devices: larger/smaller sizes & distances for larger/smaller screens. If ID in Eq. (2) is an appropriate index of actual pointing difficulty independently of screen sizes, users’ pointing performances on the same device are consistent among widget designs (A, W) and (nA, nW): note that a, b in Eq. (1) are constant (independent to ID) so that a, b must be the same for two data sets sampled with the two widget designs (A, W) and (nA, nW). The aim of this research is to investigate whether the above is true: appropriateness of the ID formulation in Eq. (2) is evaluated from the viewpoint of dependency on screen sizes, by experiments with participants. Limitations of Fitts’ law have been researched and extensions have been proposed. For example, an extension for 2D pointing tasks was proposed (MacKenzie & Buxton, 1992). Our research aims at investigating possible limitations on screen sizes. A related research was previously reported (Oehl et al., 2007). They investigated how display size influenced pointing performances on a touch UI and reported that in large displays a fast and comparably accurate execution was chosen in contrast to a very inaccurate and timeconsuming style in small displays. Touchscreen interfaces have attracted attention in recent years because their flexibility, functionality, and usability for design have become better known. They have been used in public-use terminals such as automated teller machines, ticket machines, and information kiosks. Recently, they are used for small, mobile device interfaces such as Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch (Apple Inc., 2006). Furthermore, they are employed as large tabletop interfaces such as Microsoft Surface (Microsoft Corp., 2007) and MERL DiamondTouch (Dietz & Leigh, 2001). For touchscreen interfaces, touchscreen keyboards are a fundamental function because text entry is a primary and frequently used task in several applications. Physical screen size affects the touchscreen keyboard design. A keyboard might include a different type of keyboard, display fewer keys on a small screen, or enable selection of an appropriate typing device such as a finger or stylus. Fundamentally, the touchscreen keyboard is created by software. It therefore has flexibility in visual presentation and software-based technique. In this chapter, we specifically examine touchscreen software keyboards for finger typing. We first examine criteria for analyzing and discussing touchscreen keyboards. Then the chapter presents a description of our ongoing efforts at designing a Customizable and Adaptable Touchscreen Keyboard with bubble cursor-like visual feedback (CATKey). We are particularly interested in addressing the needs of a wide range of user classes by improving its perceived usability without decreasing the text entry rate. Many touchscreen systems are targeted at the public-use market. For that reason, users’ skills and experiences are expected to vary widely. Users would refuse to use a touchscreen keyboard if the text entry method were to provide low perceived usability.

Modern Pepper's ghost—“floating hologram”—systems generally use transparent screens called half mirrors or foils. this system must have the same screen size as the image size in order to display a large-sized image. Further, depth of the image can only be obtained from the distance between the screen and the display panel. These limitations can be overcome using holographic optical elements (HOE). HOE is made by recording as a refractive force of the lens with holographic material. In this study, the numerical values of the reconstructed images were theoretically analyzed through optical ray tracing, and the theoretical design of the reconstructed image size and depth plane was numerically measured and experimentally verified.

Purpose This paper aims to examine if the response device (smartphone vs computer) used by participants in online data collections affects their responses. The screens of smartphones and computers differ in size, and the main hypothesis here is that screen size is likely to be influential when stimuli with aesthetic qualities are shown on the screen. Design/methodology/approach Two experiments, in which pictures of food items were used as stimuli, were conducted. In each experiment, the screen size of the participants’ devices used for the responses was a measured factor. Findings Participants with large screen devices responded with a higher level of (a) positive emotions and (b) attractiveness perceptions than participants with small screen devices. Practical implications The results highlight that the participant’s device can be a confounding factor in research projects comprising online data collections. Screen size thereby represents an additional factor calling for caution in the “exodus to cyberspace” that characterizes many contemporary researchers’ data collection activities. Originality/value When data are collected online, participants’ can use devices that differ in terms of screen size (e.g. smartphones, tablets and computers), but the impact of this factor on consumer behavior-related response variables has hitherto not been examined in existing research.

A major limitation for e-commerce retailers remains the lack of physical touch and feel of products before purchase. Potential buyers may be reluctant to purchase such products online because of the limited ability to evaluate physical product attributes and to infer their performance in digital media. Retailers have been addressing this limitation by implementing visual product presentation technologies such as zoom and alternative photos. In addition, the widespread adoption and use of smartphones and tablets for online shopping poses another challenge for e-commerce retailers because of the devices' smaller displays and thus limited ability for visual product presentation. In this paper, we empirically investigate how the combination of visual product presentation technologies – via zoom and alternative photos – on mobile as well as non-mobile devices affect sales in online shopping. By utilizing a randomized field experiment, we find that alternative photos are associated with an increased purchase likelihood, while zoom is associated with a decreased purchase likelihood. For the devices, we find that the highest purchases likelihoods can be observed on PCs and tablets – potentially acting as substitutes for each other – followed by smartphones, which may be explained by their smaller display sizes. However, there is no significant interaction between devices and product presentation technologies. We also demonstrate the robustness of our results and discuss implications for e-commerce retailers.

Display of images on different display devices having varied size and aspect ratio requires one to resize them. Many attempts have been made to perform content-aware image retargeting while generating an image compatible with a target display size. Seam carving is one of the image retargeting operators which alters the size of an image by removing least energy pixels. However, it requires high computational time in order to perform retargeting. In this study, the authors accelerate the naive seam carving process by removal or insertion of multiple pixel wide batch seam in a single iteration rather than a single pixel wide seam. Along with the energy of pixels to be removed, inserted energy after the removal of a batch seam is also minimised in order to prevent the inclusion of false edges. The width of a batch seam is a critical factor which is made adaptive during the retargeting process to preserve the energy of an image. They have shown a significant decrease in computational time with the increase in the width of a batch seam. The method used in this application is to contain information and location of each place in the city of Jakarta such as tourist attractions. Each menu selected has information and directions to reach the desired place. This application is only used on Android-based smartphones and the screen size is less than 4.0 inches, besides the size of 4.0 inches this application is not good at displaying tourist information.

Aim This study aims to investigate selective attention in Rett syndrome, a severely disabling neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the X-linked MECP2 gene. Method The sample included 28 females with Rett syndrome (RTT) and 32 age-matched typically developing controls. We used a classic search task, in conjunction with eye-tracking technology. Each trial included the target and several distractors. The distractors varied in number and differed from targets in either a "single feature" (color or shape), creating a pop-out effect, or in a "conjunction of features" (color and shape), requiring serial search. Children searched for the target in arrays containing five or nine objects; trials ended when the target was fixated (or 4000 ms elapsed). Results Children with Rett syndrome had more difficulty finding the target than typically developing children in both conditions (success rates less than 50% versus 80%) and their success rates were little influenced by display size or age. Even when successful, children with RTT took significantly longer to respond (392 to 574 ms longer), although saccadic latency differences were observed only in the single-feature condition. Both groups showed the expected slowing of saccadic reaction times for larger arrays in the conjunction-feature condition. Search failures in RTT were not related to symptom severity. Conclusions Our findings provide the first evidence that selective attention, the ability to focus on or select a particular element or object in the environment, is compromised by Rett syndrome. They reinforce the notion that gaze-based tasks hold promise for quantifying the cognitive phenotype of RTT.

In recent times, smart devices equipped with small touch panels have become very popular. Many such smart devices use a software keyboard for character input. Unfortunately, software keyboards have a limitation: the number of buttons and the input degrees of freedom remain the same, because a button and an input value correspond one-to-one. Thus, if we reduce the screen size while the button size remains the same, the number of buttons must decrease. Alternatively, if we maintain the number of buttons and reduce the screen size, the size of the button decreases, making input increasingly difficult. In this study, we investigate a new character input method that is specifically adapted for use on small screens. The proposed input interface has 4 × 2 operational degrees of freedom and consists of four buttons and two actions. By handling two operations as one input, 64 input options are secured. Additionally, we experimentally evaluate the proposed character input user interface deployed on a smart device. The proposed method enables an input of approximately 25 characters per minute, and it shows robust input performance on a small screen compared to previous software methods. Thus, the proposed method is better suited to small screens than were previous methods.

Smith, Redford, Gent, and Washburn (2005) have proposed a new categorization paradigm called the visual-search categorization task to study how display size affects categorization performance. Their results show that, in a wide range of conditions, category knowledge collapses as soon as multiple stimuli are simultaneously displayed in a scene. This result is surprising and important considering that humans parse and categorize objects from complex scenes on a daily basis. However, Smith et al. only studied one kind of category structure. This article presents the results of three experiments exploring the effect of display size on perceptual categorization as a function of category structure. We show that rule-based and information-integration categories are differently affected by display size in the visual search categorization task. For rule-based structures, target-present and target-absent trials are not much affected by display size. However, the effect of display size is bigger for information-integration category structures, and much more pronounced for target-absent trials than for target-present trials. A follow-up experiment shows that target redundancy (i.e., having more than one target in the display) does not improve performance with information-integration category structures. These results suggest that categories may be learned differently depending on their underlying structure, and that the resulting category representation may influence performance in the visual search categorization task.

Cell phones enable us to receive and respond to critical incidents, such as: severe storms, tornadoes, and flash floods. However, due to the small display size of cell phones, and regardless of simplified symbols or alert messages, it is possible to overlook users’ ability to interact with the available features and understand the messages in a timely manner. Untrained and trained users of the Weather Radio application participated in an experiment to perform three search tasks; (task 1: location search, task 2: alert settings, and task 3: map settings). In task 4, they evaluated two types of weather alert messages: original National Weather Service (NWS) messages vs. filtered (proposed) messages. By recording users’ completion time on the search tasks, the results showed that the time of the typing in text bar method for task 1 was significantly less than the pin on map method, while much more time was required to complete tasks 2 and 3 by the untrained users compared to the trained users. It was also revealed that the proposed messages were more effective than the original messages by both user groups. This research of user-centered designs provides a foundation to support the designs of time-critical mobile alert systems.

Objectives Ultrasound (US) is an essential component of emergency department patient care. US machines have become smaller and more affordable. Handheld ultrasound (HUS) machines are even more portable and easy to use at the patient's bedside. However, miniaturization may come with consequences. The ability to accurately interpret ultrasound on a smaller screen is unknown. This pilot study aims to assess how screen size affects the ability of emergency medicine clinicians to accurately interpret US videos. Methods This pilot study enrolled a prospective convenience sample of emergency medicine physicians. Participants completed a survey and were randomized to interpret US videos starting with either a phone-sized screen or a laptop-sized screen, switching to the other device at the halfway point. 50 unique US videos depicting right upper quadrant (RUQ) views of the Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) examination were chosen for inclusion in the study. There were 25 US videos per device. All of the images were previously obtained on a cart-based machine (Mindray M9) and preselected by the study authors. Participants answered “Yes” or “No” in response to whether they identified free fluid. The time that each participant took to interpret each video was also recorded. Following the assessment, participants completed a post-interpretation survey. The goal of the pilot was to determine the accuracy of image interpretation on a small screen as compared to a laptop-sized screen. Statistical analyses were performed using MATLAB (The MathWorks, Inc., Natick, MA). Nonparametric statistical tests were utilized to compare subgroups, with a Wilcoxon signed rank test used for paired data and a Wilcoxon rank sum test for unpaired data. Results 52 emergency medicine physicians were enrolled in the study. The median accuracy of US interpretation for phone versus laptop image screen was 88.0% and 87.6% (p = 0.67). The mean time to interpret with phone versus laptop screen was 293 and 290 s (p = 0.66). Conclusions The study found no statistically significant difference in the accuracy of US interpretation nor time spent interpreting when the pre-selected RUQ videos generated on a cart-based ultrasound machine were reviewed on a phone-sized versus a laptop-sized screen. This pilot study suggests that the accuracy of US interpretation may not be dependent upon the size of the screen utilized.

Greenhouses require accurate and reliable data to interpret the microclimate and maximize resource use efficiency. However, greenhouse conditions are harsh for electrical sensors collecting environmental data. Convolutional neural networks (ConvNets) enable complex interpretation by multiplying the input data. The objective of this study was to impute missing tabular data collected from several greenhouses using a ConvNet architecture called U-Net. Various data-loss conditions with errors in individual sensors and in all sensors were assumed. The U-Net with a screen size of 50 exhibited the highest coefficient of determination values and the lowest root-mean-square errors for all environmental factors used in this study. U-Net50 correctly learned the changing patterns of the greenhouse environment from the training dataset. Therefore, the U-Net architecture can be used for the imputation of tabular data in greenhouses if the model is correctly trained. Growers can secure data integrity with imputed data, which could increase crop productivity and quality in greenhouses.

Introduction: In-line positioning of an ultrasound image provides higher success rates and less time to completion for radial arterial cannulation. But preferable size and distance of ultrasound display has not been previously discussed. Objective: To assess the ideal visual distance and display size when using a smart phone or tablet as the ultrasound image display. Methods: Four smart phones or tablets were used as ultrasound displays in six different configurations in a simulated radial artery puncture. In a questionnaire, 116 anaesthesiologists working in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, were asked which of the six configurations was preferable for radial artery cannulation. Results: Sixty anaesthesiologists answered the questionnaire. About half (53%) preferred the smaller display (4- or 5.5-inch) fixed at a distance of 30 to 40 cm, and most of the rest (44%) preferred the larger display (7.9- or 9.7-inch) placed posterior to the probe with a visual distance of 45 to 60 cm. Conclusions: Among the anaesthesiologists, the preferable size and visual distance for ultrasound-guided radial artery cannulation varied using a smart phone or tablet for in-line display.

International audience; We replicated a smartwatch perception experiment on the topic of glanceable visualizations. The initial study used a setup that involved showing stimuli on an actual smartwatch attached to a wooden stand and a laptop to run and log the experiment and communicate with the smartwatch. In our replication we wanted to test whether a much simpler setup that involved showing the same stimuli on a laptop screen with similar pixel size and density would lead to similar results. We also extended the initial study by testing to what extent the size of the stimulus played a role for the results. Our results indicate that the general trends observed in the original study mostly held also on the larger display, with only a few differences in certain conditions. Yet, participants were slower on the large display. We also found no evidence of a difference for the two different stimulus display sizes we tested. Our study, thus, gives evidence that simulating smartwatch displays on laptop screens with similar resolution and pixel size might be a viable alternative for smartwatch perception studies with visualizations.

The popularity of watching movies and videos on handheld devices is rising, yet little attention has been paid to its impact on viewer behaviour. Smartphone spectatorship is characterized by the small handheld screen as well as the viewing environment where various unrelated stimuli can occur, providing possible distractions from viewing. Previous research suggests that screen size, handheld control, and external stimuli can affect viewing experience; however, no prior studies have combined these factors or applied them for the specific case of smartphones. In the present study, we compared smartphone and large-screen viewing of feature films in the presence and absence of external distractors. Using a combination of eye tracking, electrodermal activity measures, self-reports, and recollection accuracy tests, we measured smartphone-accustomed viewers’ attention, arousal, engagement, and comprehension. The results revealed the impact of viewing conditions on eye movements, gaze dispersion, electrodermal activity, self-reports of engagement, as well as comprehension. These findings show that smartphone viewing is more effective when there are no distractions, and smartphone viewers are more likely to be affected by external stimuli. In addition, watching large stationary screens in designated viewing environments increases engagement with a movie.

This paper presents a study in which we investigated the use of different devices and mechanisms to implement Mixed Reality settings for peer recommendations on furniture. In particular, we developed a mechanism to scan rooms for new furniture to be placed in, make the resulting 3D environment available to users and display virtual furniture in it. In an exploratory study, we asked 21 participants to use this environment to support an imaginary friend in their buying decision on a couch for their living room. This was done in five conditions, including a static photo of the living room, 3D representations on mobile phones and PC screens as well as mobile (cardboard-based) VR and a dedicated VR HMD. In the study, we wanted to explore how display size, 3D experience and the fidelity of HMDs affect the quality of support for recommendations by the remote peers. Our results show that the screen-based and VR-based 3D mechanisms outperform a simple photo and that VR HMDs created highest perceptions of spatial presence and were preferred by users. Surprisingly, users perceived all mechanisms showing the 3D environment to create similar qualities of support for their recommendations. We analyze these findings and derive design recommendations from them.

Comparing trades by the same investor in the same month across different platforms, we find that smartphones increase purchasing of riskier and lottery-type assets and chasing past returns. After the adoption of smartphones, investors do not substitute trades across platforms and buy also riskier, lottery-type, and hot investments on other platforms. Using smartphones to trade specific assets or during specific hours contributes to explain our results. Digital nudges and the device screen size do not mechanically drive our results. Smartphone effects are not transitory.

Over the last decade, mobile technologies such as smartphones and tablets have become an integral part of people’s daily life. While only 18% of Internet users in Germany used a smartphone in 2011, this rate increased to 78% in 2019, among people aged 16-24 even to 95% (Destatis 2011, 2020), with similar trends observed in other countries (Silver 2019). Smartphones have become an everyday companion that people not only use for calling and texting but also for interaction on social media, news consumption, entertainment, and navigation, among many other things (Perrin 2017).

Driver distraction is a recognized cause of traffic accidents. Although the well-known guidelines for measuring distraction of secondary in-car tasks were published by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2013, studies have raised concerns on the accuracy of the method defined in the guidelines, namely criticizing them for basing the diversity of the driver sample on driver age, and for inconsistent between-group results. In fact, it was recently discovered that the NHTSA driving simulator test is susceptible to rather fortuitous results when the participant sample is randomized. This suggests that the results of said test are highly dependent on the selected participants, rather than on the phenomenon being studied, for example, the effects of touch screen size on driver distraction. As an attempt to refine the current guidelines, we set out to study whether a previously proposed new testing method is as susceptible to the effects of participant randomization as the NHTSA method. This new testing method differs from the NHTSA method by two major accounts. First, the new method considers occlusion distance (i.e., how far a driver can drive with their vision covered) rather than age, and second, the new method considers driving in a more complex, and arguably, a more realistic environment than proposed in the NHTSA guidelines. Our results imply that the new method is less susceptible to sample randomization, and that occlusion distance appears a more robust criterion for driver sampling than merely driver age. Our results are applicable in further developing driver distraction guidelines and provide empirical evidence on the effect of individual differences in drivers’ glancing behavior. peerReviewed

Introduction: Smartphone vision disorder is a complex of eye and vision related problems associated with close work during use of digital screen. It is one of the rising wellbeing concerns identified with innovation (phones and tablets) because of constant utilisation of Smartphones among medical undergraduates particularly during the last five months due to COVID-19 pandemic for attending online classes. Aim: To investigate the impact of online classes on development of Digital Vision Syndrome (DVS) among undergraduate medical students. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 280 undergraduate medical students from 1st and 2nd professional MBBS course attending online classes regularly from the last five months. The authors evaluated the student’s perception based on the symptoms experienced in the last five months through a pre-tested questionnaire related to DVS which are caused due to two mechanisms: (i) accommodative mechanism; (ii) ocular surface mechanism by using 5-point Likert scale. The association between development of DVS symptoms and risk factors like distance of eyes from the screen, refractive errors, duration of exposure and size of screen was analysed by factor analysis and ANOVA through EpiInfoTM for windows version 7.2.4. Results: In the present study, 78.2% of students were using smartphones and 21.8% were using large screen for reading and attending online classes during the lockdown period. Responsive design allows users to benefit from the web page without having to worry about screen size and resolution. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of responsive design on usability. For this purpose, a questionnaire consisting of a five-point Likert was applied to university students. According to the results, it was seen that 99.2% of university students had smart phones and used smart phones to connect to internet with a rate of 91.3%. It was observed that the participants' attitudes towards responsive design did not differ according to gender, and students in the 24–26 age group had more desire to use responsive design. And, university students' attitudes towards responsive design did not differ according to the Internet access method. It was found that 38% of the participants had a daily internet usage rate of 4–5 h and they used social media the most. Ease of use has been identified as the most preferred feature (Avg = 3.67/5, 73.4%) of usability in responsive design by evaluating dimensions central tendency measures. With regression analysis, responsive design explains 74.7% of the change in effectiveness (R2 = 0.747) among the usability dimensions.
