Two tetraferrocenylbenzene derivatives, 1-trimethylsilyl-2,3,4,5-tetraferrocenylbenzene (1) and 1,2,4,5-tetraferrocenylbenzene (2), were synthesized by cycloaddition reactions of alkynes with Co2(CO)6(μ2-alkyne) as reaction precursors and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR, and MS. The molecular structures of1and2were identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The redox properties were studied by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry, which indicated stronger electronic communication among ferrocenyl units. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Three new ferrocenylbenzene derivatives, 1-ferrocenyl-2,3,4,5-tetramethylbenzene (1), 1-ferrocenyl-2,4-diphenylbenzene (2), and 1-ferrocenyl-2,4-ditrimethylsilylbenzene (3), were synthesized by cycloaddition of ferrocenylacetylene cobalt cluster with different alkynes and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR, and MS. The oxidation potentials of ferrocenyl unit in these compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and theoretical calculations. The results indicated that the electron-donating or electron-withdrawing effect of substituents on the central phenyl was the key factor that influenced the oxidation potential of the ferrocenyl unit. Complex 1 (1,2,4-triferrocenylbenzene tricarbonylchromium), possessing four heterometals, has been synthesized efficiently by a new method in one pot. Through detailed study on the NMR chemical shifts of 1 and the ligand 2, the NMR chemical shifts of 1 shift upfield from those of 2. The NMR spectra of 1 have reduced magnetic anisotropy of benzene after Cr(CO)3 coordination with 2. The ferrocenyl groups have electron donating effect on the central benzene ring of 1. Four diferrocenyl compounds: FcC(CH3)2Fc (1), Fc(CH3)C(C2H5)Fc (2), Fc(CH3)C(C3H7)Fc (3), and Fc(CH3)C(C6H5)Fc (4) were synthesized and characterized by NMR, FT-IR, MS, and elemental analysis. The electrochemical interactions between two ferrocenyl units in these compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and theoretical calculation.
