The structure-property relationship of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/CaCO 3 nanocomposites is investigated by all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. MD simulation results indicate that the dispersity of nanofillers, interfacial bonding, and chain mobility are imperative factors to improve the mechanical performance of nanocomposites, especially toughness. The tensile behavior and dissipated work of the PVC/CaCO 3 model demonstrate that 12 wt % CaCO 3 modified with oleate anion and dodecylbenzenesulfonate can impart high toughness to PVC due to its good dispersion, favorable interface interaction, and weak migration of PVC chains. Under the guidance of MD simulation, we experimentally prepared a transparent PVC/CaCO 3 nanocomposite with good mechanical properties by in situ polymerization of monodispersed CaCO 3 in vinyl chloride monomers. Interestingly, experimental tests indicate that the optimum toughness of a nanocomposite (a 368% increase in the elongation at break and 204% improvement of the impact strength) can be indeed realized by adding 12 wt % CaCO 3 modified with oleic acid and dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid, which is remarkably consistent with the MD simulation prediction. In short, this work provides a proof-of-concept of using MD simulation to guide the experimental synthesis of PVC/CaCO 3 nanocomposites, which can be considered as an example to develop other functional nanocomposites.

Highly crystalline carbon nitride (CCN), benefiting from the reduced structural imperfections, enables improved electron-hole separation. Yet, the crystalline phase with insufficient inherent defects suffers from a poor performance toward the reaction intermediate adsorption with respect to the amorphous phase. Herein, a crystalline-amorphous carbon nitride (CACN) with an isotype structure was constructed via a two-step adjacent calcination strategy. Through specific oxygen etching and crystallization, the formation of a built-in electric field at the interface could drive charge transfer and separation, thus promoting photoredox reaction. As expected, the optimized CACN exhibited a H 2 O 2 generation efficiency as high as 2.15 mM g cat -1 h -1 , paired with a promoted pollutant degradation efficiency, which outperform its crystalline (CCN) and amorphous [amorphous carbon nitride (ACN)] counterparts. The detailed electron/hole transportation via a built-in electronic field and free radical formation based on the enhanced adsorption of oxygen were considered, and the synchronous reaction pathway was carried out. This work paves a novel pathway for the synthesis of carbon nitride with an isotype structure from the perspective of interfacial engineering.

Pyranones have raised great concerns owing to their considerable applications in a variety of sectors. However, the development of direct asymmetric allylation of 4-hydroxypyran-2-ones is still restricted. Herein, we present an effective iridium-catalyzed asymmetric functionalization technique for the synthesis of 4-hydroxypyran-2-one derivatives over direct and efficient catalytic asymmetric Friedel-Crafts-type allylation by using allyl alcohols. The allylation products could be obtained with good to high yields (up to 96%) and excellent enantioselectivities (>99% ee ). Therefore, the disclosed technique provides a new asymmetric synthetic strategy to explore pyranone derivatives in depth, thus providing an interesting approach for global application and further utilization in organic synthesis and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Iridium/Brønsted acid cooperative catalyzed asymmetric allylic substitution reactions at the C5 position of indolines have been reported for the first time. The highly efficient protocol allows rapid access to various C5-allylated products in good to high yields (48-97%) and enantioselectivities (82% to >99% ee) with wide functional group tolerance. The transformations allow not only the formation of C5-allylindoline derivatives but also the synthesis of C5-allylindole analogues in good yields and excellent stereoselectivities via an allylation/oxidation reaction sequence.

A Pd-catalyzed linear selective intermolecular asymmetric dearomative allylic alkylation reaction of naphthols with alkoxyallenes under mild reaction conditions is reported. The transformation is successfully promoted by Pd 2 (dba) 3 and the chiral Trost ligand and provides a general atom-efficient protocol to obtain various β-naphthalenones bearing an all carbon quaternary stereogenic center in good yields and chemo- and stereoselectivities.

An efficient cobalt(III)-catalyzed method for the direct C-H amidation of unprotected indoles for 2-amino indole scaffold construction has been developed. With dioxazolone as the amidating reagent, a variety of 2-amino indole derivatives were achieved in moderate to excellent yields using an organic acid as the additive and a ketone as the directing group.

An indium(0)-metal-mediated efficient synthesis of benzylic hydroperoxides is described. The reaction proceeds efficiently with a broad range of benzyl bromides under aerobic conditions at room temperature to afford benzyl hydroperoxides in good to excellent yields. In addition, the tandem hydroperoxidation-Michael addition of ( E)-1-(bromomethyl)-2-(2-nitrovinyl)benzene was also demonstrated.

An efficient and facile method to synthesize valuable disubstituted 2-aryl indoles and benzofurans in good yields has been demonstrated, based on a tert-butoxide-mediated condensation reaction involving a vinyl sulfoxide intermediate. Products are obtained from N- or O-benzyl benzaldehydes using dimethyl sulfoxide as a carbon source. The methodology features a wide functional group tolerance and transition metal-free environment. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction involves a tandem aldol reaction/Michael addition/dehydrosulfenylation/isomerization sequence through an ionic protocol.

The objective of this study was to systematically investigate the inhibitory effect of furfural (FF), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), syringic acid (SA), vanillic acid (VA), and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), which are problematic lignocellulose-derived byproducts, on exoelectrogenesis in the bioanode of a microbial electrolysis cell. The five compound mixture at an initial total concentration range from 0.8 to 8.0 g/L resulted in an up to 91% current decrease as a result of exoelectrogenesis inhibition; fermentative, nonexoelectrogenic biotransformation pathways of the five compounds were not affected. Furthermore, the parent compounds at a high concentration, as opposed to their biotransformation products, were responsible for the observed inhibition. All five parent compounds contributed to the observed inhibition of the mixture. The IC 50 (i.e., concentration resulting in 50% current decrease) of individually tested parent compounds was 2.7 g/L for FF, 3.0 g/L for HMF, 1.9 g/L for SA, 2.1 g/L for VA and 2.0 g/L for HBA. However, the parent compounds, when tested below their respective noninhibitory concentration, jointly resulted in significant inhibition as a mixture. Catechol and phenol, which were persistent biotransformation products, inhibited exoelectrogenesis only at high concentrations, but to a lesser extent than the parent compounds. Exoelectrogenesis recovery from inhibition by all compounds was observed at different rates, with the exception of catechol, which resulted in irreversible inhibition.

A novel and efficient aerobic asymmetric cyclization reaction of cinnamaldehydes and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds through oxidative NHC-catalysis has been developed, and it allows the synthesis of a wide range of enantiomeric enriched dihydropyranone derivatives in good yields with good to excellent enantioselectivities. Various α,β-unsaturated aldehydes with aliphatic and aromatic substitution groups and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds were well tolerated. The air was directly used as the oxidant, which made this asymmetric cyclization reaction in a highly efficient, cheap, and green manner.

An efficient organocatalytic Michael/aldol/hemiacetalization cascade reaction for construction of enantioenriched spirocyclic oxindoles fused with tetrahydropyrane has been developed. The desired highly functionalized 5',6'-dihydro-2'H,4'H-spiro[indoline-3,3'-pyran]-2-one derivatives containing multiple stereogenic centers were obtained in moderate to high chemical yields and with high stereoselectivities.

Furanic and phenolic compounds are problematic byproducts resulting from the breakdown of lignocellulosic biomass during biofuel production. The capacity of a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) to produce hydrogen gas (H2) using a mixture of two furanic (furfural, FF; 5-hydroxymethyl furfural, HMF) and three phenolic (syringic acid, SA; vanillic acid, VA; and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, HBA) compounds as the substrate in the bioanode was assessed. The rate and extent of biotransformation of the five compounds and efficiency of H2 production, as well as the structure of the anode microbial community, were investigated. The five compounds were completely transformed within 7-day batch runs and their biotransformation rate increased with increasing initial concentration. At an initial concentration of 1200 mg/L (8.7 mM) of the mixture of the five compounds, their biotransformation rate ranged from 0.85 to 2.34 mM/d. The anode Coulombic efficiency was 44-69%, which is comparable to that of wastewater-fed MECs. The H2 yield varied from 0.26 to 0.42 g H2-COD/g COD removed in the anode, and the bioanode volume-normalized H2 production rate was 0.07-0.1 L/L-d. The biotransformation of the five compounds took place via fermentation followed by exoelectrogenesis. The major identified fermentation products that did not transform further were catechol and phenol. Acetate was the direct substrate for exoelectrogenesis. Current and H2 production were inhibited at an initial substrate concentration of 1200 mg/L, resulting in acetate accumulation at a much higher level than that measured in other batch runs conducted with a lower initial concentration of the five compounds. The anode microbial community consisted of exoelectrogens, putative degraders of the five compounds, and syntrophic partners of exoelectrogens. The MEC H2 production demonstrated in this study is an alternative to the currently used process of reforming natural gas to supply H2 needed to upgrade bio-oils to stable hydrocarbon fuels.

An N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed highly enantioselective [3 + 3] annulation reaction of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) 3,3-disubstituted acrylates and N-Ts ketimines was developed. In most cases, the desired chiral dihydropyridinone products bearing an all carbon quaternary stereogenic center could be obtained in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities (>99% ee's), which demonstrated the NHPI acrylates as a kind of excellent substrate in NHC-catalysis.

A chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed [3 + 3] cycloaddition reaction of imines and oxindole-derived enals was developed for rapid access to spirocylic oxindoles. In most cases, the desired spirocylic oxindole products were obtained in high yields and excellent enantioselectivities with less than 1 h of reaction time.

A TfOH-catalyzed chemoselective [3 + 2] cycloaddition of donor-acceptor oxiranes and nitriles is described. This reaction provides an efficient and practical method for the preparation of useful 3-oxazolines in good to excellent yields (up to 99%).

In the present article, we have developed a facile and rapid method to fabricate a polyelectrolyte multilayer under high gravity field and investigated the difference of mass transfer in the diffusing process between LbL self-assembled technique under high gravity field (HG-LbL) and dipping assembly. Herein, we have employed polyethyleneimine and zinc oxide nanoparticles, which is a well-known UV blocking material with typical absorption properties in the range of 300-400 nm, as building blocks and applied hydrogen bonding as the driving force to construct the multilayer under HG-LbL and dipping assembly. The results show that, compared with dipping assembly, HG-LbL can highly improve the utilization and adsorption efficiency of building blocks by hastening the diffusing process, and meanwhile the resulting multilayer films still achieve comparable quality as those prepared from dipping assembly.

The catalytic asymmetric synthesis of densely functionalized cis-isoxazoline N-oxides was realized with novel use of an organocatalyst, (S)-2-(azidodiphenylmethyl)pyrrolidine (4e) (Tan, B.; Zhu, D.; Zhang, L.; Chua, P. J.; Zeng, X.; Zhong, G. Chem.-Eur. J. 2010, 16, 3842; Olivares-Romero, J. L.; Juaristi, E. Tetrahedron 2008, 64, 9992), via an elegant formal [4 + 1] annulation strategy using readily available 2-nitroacrylates and α-iodoaldehydes.

A highly enantio- and diastereoselective organocatalytic domino Michael-Henry process for the preparation of synthetically unique and medicinally important bicyclo[3.2.1]octane derivatives with four stereogenic centers including two quaternary stereocenters has been developed. Theoretical DFT calculations on the transition states have been carried out to reveal origins of the excellent stereoselectivities. A novel dual model was thus proposed.

A clean and highly efficient enantioselective addition of alpha-isocyanoacetamides to aliphatic aldehydes catalyzed by chiral phosphoric acid in the presence of MS 5 A in toluene at -40 degrees C was developed. Excellent yields (85-98%) and good to excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee) were achieved.

A clean and fast (10 min) aziridination of diazoacetamides with N-Boc-imines, as well as N-Cbz-imines, catalyzed by chiral phosphoric acid (R)-5g in DCM at room temperature was developed. The excellent yields (89-97%), diastereoselectivities (trans/cis > 50:1), chemoselectivities (3:4 = >95:5), and enantioselectivities (88-98% ee) were achieved in the reaction.

A remarkable organocatalyst that facilitates the asymmetric Michael addition of cyclic ketones to nitroolefins in excellent stereoselectivities (98:2 to >99:1 dr, 92% to >99% ee) has been developed and afforded various types of optically active nitroalkane derivatives of synthetic and biological importance. The extremely simple and practical operational procedure at room temperature increases the attractiveness of this reaction.

A novel, facile, and highly enantioselective Brønsted acid-catalyzed alpha-hydroxylation of beta-dicarbonyl compounds with up to 99:1 er using nitroso compounds as the oxygen source has been developed. The results disclosed herein considerably extend the substrate scope for the alpha-aminoxylation, allowing expeditious, straightforward, and efficient access to valuable alpha-hydroxy-beta-dicarbonyl compounds with the highest levels of enantiocontrol.

Highly functionalized cyclopentanes with four stereogenic carbons including two quaternary stereocenters have been synthesized in excellent yields (90-95%) with complete diastereoselectivities and excellent enantioselectivities (88-96% ee) by the organocatalyzed asymmetric domino Michael-Henry reaction.
