【Objective】The research aims to investigate the inhibitory effects of different Chinese herbal medicine extracts on banana Fusarium wilt, and to screen effective plant resources for the control of banana Fusarium wilt.【Method】Tests were carried out on 29 Chinese herbal medicines, including Rheum palmatum and Andrographis paniculata, and the effective active ingredients were extracted by ethanol extraction. The inhibitory effects of different extracts on Foc TR4 were detected by the growth rate method, and the ethanol extracts of Rheum palmatum were extracted by using four solvents with different polarities, namely, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol. The inhibitory effects of the extracts on the spores germination of banana Fusarium wilt were determined by the pendant drop method, and the effects of the extracts on the mycelial morphology of banana Fusarium wilt were observed.【Result】The inhibitory effects of 29 herbal medicine extracts on Foc TR4 showed great differences, and four extracts, including Rheum palmatum, Andrographis paniculata, Sophora flavescens, and Chrysanthemum indicum had better inhibitory effects on Foc TR4, among which the best inhibitory effect was achieved by Rheum palmatum extract, with the inhibitory rate of 6 mg/mL Rheum palmatum extract being 48.57%, and the EC50 of the mycelial growth being 6.68 mg/mL, while the EC50 of the spore germination was 4.60 mg/mL. Through observation by light microscope, the Rheum palmatum extract had a certain destructive effect on Foc TR4 mycelium, which produced a large number of branches and adhesions and caused uneven mycelial growth; among the four extraction fractions of the ethanolic crude extracts of Rheum palmatum, namely, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol, the extract fraction of ethyl acetate showed the best inhibitory effects on the growth and spore germination of Foc TR4 mycelium, and the inhibition rate of mycelial growth could reach 85.68% when the concentration was 10 mg/mL. The EC50 value of ethyl acetate extract fraction of Rheum palmatum extract on Foc TR4 was 0.16 mg/mL.【Conclusion】The Rheum palmatum extract was screened out from 29 Chinses herbal medicine extracts with better inhibitory effect, and its main effective inhibitory component against banana Fusariu wilt Foc TR4 was in the ethyl acetate extract fraction was further clarified, which could provide a reference for the research and development of new pesticides from plant resources for the prevention and control of banana Fusarium wilt.

With the rapid advancements in sequencing technology, an increasing number of genome sequences for medicinal plants have become available. In 2021, TCMPG was introduced as a comprehensive database dedicated to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) plant genomes, capturing significant attention within the scientific community. To offer invaluable resources to researchers, this database received an upgrade to its latest version, named TCMPG 2.0, accessible at http://cbcb.cdutcm.edu.cn/TCMPG2/. TCMPG 2.0 surpasses its predecessor by adding 114 medicinal plants, 129 genomes, and 159 related herbs. Recognizing the critical role of ingredients in assessing the pharmacological effects of Chinese medicines, TCMPG 2.0 has also amassed data on 13,868 herbal ingredients. Additionally, four practical analytical tools, including Heatmap, Primer3, PlantiSMASH, and CRISPRCasFinder, have been integrated into the toolbox. These valuable enhancements significantly enhance the database's utility for researchers in the field.

Infectious diseases continue to cause global morbidity and mortality. The rise of drug-resistant pathogens is a major challenge to modern medicine. Plant-based antimicrobials may solve this issue; hence, this review discussed in detail plant-sourced antimicrobial drugs as an alternative toward bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens. Plant-derived chemicals from various sources such as marine, medicinal, and non-medicinal sources have diverse antimicrobial properties. Complex chemical profiles from these sources allow these molecules to interact with several targets in the microbial pathogens. Due to their multi-component composition, these compounds are more effective and less likely to acquire resistance than single-target antibiotics. Medicinal herbs have long been used for their antimicrobial properties; however, non-medicinal plants have also been identified for their antimicrobial properties. Other interesting new pathways for the identification of antimicrobials include marine plants, which contain a wide variety of metabolites that are both distinct and varied. We have conducted a thorough literature search for the medicinal, non-medicinal, and marine plant-derived molecules with antimicrobial roles from databases which include Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. The review also discussed the synergistic potential of combining these plant-derived compounds with traditional antimicrobial drugs to attenuate the microbial pathogenesis. Based on the existing research and advancements, the review article emphasizes the importance of continuing research into plant-based antimicrobials from these many sources and integrating them with existing therapies to combat the rising threat of drug-resistant infections. Orchids are one of the largest and globally distributed plant families. Indonesia has the most types of orchids, estimated around 20% from the total species across the world. Mainly orchids used as an ornamental plant. This research aimed to elucidate another potential of orchids as possibly for herbal medicine plant. The potential of orchids as herbal medicine has been known for a long time, but there is lack of well-documented research. The research method used in this research is exploration on predetermined research sites that were conducted in Mount Tilu, West Java on 2022. Observation data of orchids were collected on the sites and the analysis was carried out in a qualitative descriptive approach by describing the data from the research results and comparisons were made through a literature review. Based on the research results, we found about 31 species from 28 genera consisting of 24 epiphytic orchids and 7 terrestrial orchids in the Mount Tilu Kuningan area, West Java. There are 4 endemic species categorised in Java; Chilochista javanica, Crepidium koordesii, Crepidium junghuhnii, and Taeniophyllum biocellatum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Taraxaci herba, as a traditional Chinese medicine, is the name of the Taraxacum genus in the Asteraceae family. Documented in the Tang Herbal Medicine (Tang Dynasty, AD 657–659), its medicinal properties cover a wide range of applications such as acute mastitis, lung abscess, conjunctival congestion, sore throat, damp-heat jaundice, and vision improvement. In the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (Edition 2020), more than 40 kinds of China-patented drugs containing Taraxaci herba were recorded. This review explores the evolving scientific understanding of Taraxaci herba, covering facets of ethnopharmacology, botany, phytochemistry, pharmacology, artificial cultivation, and quality control. In particular, the chemical constituents and pharmacological research are reviewed. Taraxaci herba has been certified as a traditional medicine plant, and its flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids have been identified and separated, which include Chicoric acid, taraxasterol, Taraxasteryl acetate, Chlorogenic acid, isorhamnetin, and luteolin; they are responsible for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-tumor, and anti-cancer activities. These findings validate the traditional uses of Taraxaci herba and lay the groundwork for further scientific exploration. Moringa is renowned as the miracle tree for its versatile applications in food, medicine, plant growth stimulation, animal feed, and its nutritional, pharmacological, and biotechnological potential. Initially, the mutation was induced by treating the seeds with gamma rays (100 Gy, 200Gy and 300 Gy) and Ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) at 0.15%, 0.20% and 0.25%. Based on continuous evaluation of mutants from M1 to M3 generation, four selected mutant families: 15-1-09, 35-1-62, 35-1-63 and 35-1-68, with 15 mutants from each family were studied to identify high-performing mutants alongside PKM 1 Moringa. Principal component analysis (PCA) of 12 morphological traits for each mutant family revealed five principal components with eigenvalues exceeding one, collectively explaining 78.19, 74.88, 79.85 and 83.80% of the total variability from the mutant families 15-1-09, 35-1-63, 35-1-62, and 35-1-68 respectively. The analysis highlighted that foliage density, apex shape of the first leaf blade, leaf shape, and plant growth habit exhibited the highest variation, while the remaining traits showed lower variability. Through Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the genotypes 15-1-09-39, 35-1-62-72, 35-1-62-73, 35-1-68-79, and 35-1-63-06 emerged as the most diverse genotypes based on seedling hypocotyls colour, young shoot colour and petiole: anthocyanin colouration of the axis and branches. Background: Astragalus membranaceus Mongholicus (Astragalus) is one of the most widely used medicinal plants in the world. It is a traditional Chinese medicine plant that has been used to treat various human diseases and conditions, such as inflammation, gastrointestinal bacterial infections and malignant tumors. With the expansion of artificial planting areas, the demand for high-quality Astragalus seedlings is also increasing. The traditional seedling-raising methods of direct seeding and induced callus have problems such as a long growth period, unstable genetic traits, strict sampling and rooting difficulties. Therefore, it is very important to multiply the excellent germplasm by optimizing the tissue culture regeneration system. Methods: In this study, Astragalus field cultivated plants, which are easily available, were used as materials and the method of tissue culture cuttings was used to select the direct inoculation method of stem segments as explant materials to establish a plant regeneration system of Astragalus and the best sampling period, sampling site and optimal medium for regeneration of field cultivated plants were screened. Result: The best sampling period for plant regeneration of Astragalus in the field was about 40 d after the emergence of the 3-yearold Astragalus and the rooting rate of the regenerated plants was 100.00%. The best sampling site is the middle section of the stem and the regeneration system using the middle section of the stem as the explant is better than using the top and bottom of the stem as the explant and the rooting rate of the regenerated plants is 100.00%; the best medium for the regenerated plants is N22: 1/2MS+1 mg/L NAA and T28: 1/2MS+1 mg/L ABT, the rooting rates were 76.67% and 96.67%, respectively. The regenerated plants established with the stems of the field cultivated plants of Astragalus as explants were all able to induce seedlings after 1 week and the regenerated seedlings start to take root after 3 weeks of growth and can be transplanted and propagated after 6 weeks of culture. The regeneration system established in this study by direct cuttings from cultivated Astragalus stems is more rapid and efficient, breaking through the difficulties of limited access to material and long growth period of regenerated seedlings in the traditional regeneration system and providing technical support for the conservation and utilization of wild resources of Astragalus and rapid expansion of new varieties and germplasm conservation. Coix lacryma-jobi L., an annual or perennial plant belonging to the Poaceae family, has long been cultivated as a food and medicine plant in China. In recent years, coix cultivation for high yields and good quality has become a research hotspot in Southwest China. Soil optimization is essential for improving crop growth. To ensure the robust establishment of coix plants, eight soil substrates, prepared from three typical soils, i.e., red clay soil, peat soil, and sandy soil, were used to cultivate two local coix varieties (Pu coix from Fujian Province, China; Qi coix from Hebei Province, China), and the plant growth and root coixol content of the two coix varieties were investigated. It was found that coix plants could maintain growth when cultivated with peat soil or sandy soil, but red clay soil was unfavorable for coix growth. The mixtures of sandy soils and peat soils resulted in synergistic benefits for coix growth and root coixol levels over the effects of sandy soil or peat soil alone. In conclusion, the mixtures of sandy soils and peat soils with appropriate proportions (sandy soils/peat soils = 2:1) were suggested as an ideal soil substrate for coix cultivation. Simple Summary: With advances in NGS technology, the high ratio of throughput/cost per base has allowed research laboratories to develop diagnostic protocols that can detect multiple agents (metagenomics) simultaneously without a previous hypothesis. This has created a shift from hypothesis-based diagnosis to agnostic–diagnostic and a clear awareness of how the interplay among traditionally disease-causing agents, opportunistic microbes, and the host itself all influence the host's health status. However, large-scale implementation of this new technology at the clinical level has not been achieved. We investigated the causes of the implementation impediment and the possible solutions. We examined scientific publications, institutional information, and company sites searching for available research and commercial diagnostics applications of non-targeted sequencing and metagenomics studies focused on the last 10 years. We have identified an extensive range of research applications for this technology across veterinary medicine, human medicine, plant disease, ecological monitoring, and basic biology, all utilizing variations of one very similar general approach. Our analysis revealed that the most significant limitation for clinical applications is operational, stemming from the technology's high complexity and the lack of validation data. Our analysis suggests that operational research focused on utilizing fewer commonly used technical approaches offers a potential solution. We propose the use of non-targeted total RNA sequencing as the most promising technique. Furthermore, we identified commonalities among existing protocols that could be standardized for validation. To achieve uniformity and validation, we propose consolidating protocols through implementation research guided by existing international organizations and utilizing universal agent-rich reference sample materials. Metagenomics offers the potential to replace and simplify classical methods used in the clinical diagnosis of human and veterinary infectious diseases. Metagenomics boasts a high pathogen discovery rate and high specificity, advantages absent in most classical approaches. However, its widespread adoption in clinical settings is still pending, with a slow transition from research to routine use. While longer turnaround times and higher costs were once concerns, these issues are currently being addressed by automation, better chemistries, improved sequencing platforms, better databases, and automated bioinformatics analysis. However, many technical options and steps, each producing highly variable outcomes, have reduced the technology's operational value, discouraging its implementation in diagnostic labs. We present a case for utilizing non-targeted RNA sequencing (NT-RNA-seq) as an ideal metagenomics method for the detection of infectious disease-causing agents in humans and animals. Additionally, to create operational value, we propose to identify best practices for the "core" of steps that are invariably shared among many human and veterinary protocols. Reference materials, sequencing procedures, and bioinformatics standards should accelerate the validation processes necessary for the widespread adoption of this technology. The interest in lipid composition profiling is significantly increasing as research reveals the immense importance of lipids in medicine, plant science, food and agriculture. However, lipidomic analysis requires high-end specialty equipment. We used two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography (2D-TLC) as a readily available, low-cost tool for basic lipidomic profiling of lipid classes in algal samples in the models Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Auxenochlorella protothecoides, and Euglena gracilis, validating lipid class identification using an LC-MS/MS analysis. Algal lipid extracts were separated on a 2D-TLC plate, and TLC analysis was followed by scraping individual TLC spots off the plate, and a subsequent liquid chromatography separation and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. For comparison, crude lipid extracts were also injected directly to the LC-MS/MS system. Lipid class annotation was achieved by a combination of accurate mass, retention time information, neutral loss and fragment ion analysis by MS2Analyzer, and by matching spectra to LipidBlast MS/MS library. Overall, we were able to identify 15 lipid classes, and to adequately profile the lipid classes in all three organisms. This TLC method is thus suggested as an accessible tool for lipid class profiling of algal, plant, and food lipids, alike, when a rapid and simple analysis is required, e.g., for screening purposes. Several herbal plants have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in modulating the morphology of the gut, leading to improved nutrients absorption, enhanced growth, and reduced susceptibility to diseases. Aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of coriander seed powder (CSP; 0% as T1, 1.5% as T2 and 3.5% as T3) in modulating broiler chickens gut morphology. A total of 180 one-dayold broiler chicks were randomly allocated into 3 treatment groups 60 chick/group in 3 replicates. The trial was designed according to a completely randomized design for 45 days. The histomorphology of duodenum, jejunum and ileum [villus height (VH), villus width, crypt depth (CD) and villus height to crypt depth; VH:CD ratio] were investigated. The result showed a significant increase (P<0.01) of villus height in two treatments (1.5% and 3.5%) as compared to control in all segments. Moreover, the significant increase (P<0.01) on VH:CD ratio is observed between treatments as compared to control in ileum and dietary use of 3.5% CSP had significant effects on the jejunum and duodenum as compared to the control group. In conclusion, the application of CSP at 1.5% and 3.5% had a positive effect on villus height and VH:CD ratio of all segments. However, further research is required to understand the precise mechanisms underlying medicine plant effects as well as what the ideal percentage for each plant will be added for a best positive effect on performance. Saffron is an essential medicinal plant and cash crop on this planet having significant medicinal and commercial values. The main goals of this study are to identify and analyse the scholarly articles published in the reputed Web of Science database to know the current trend in the research and conservation of saffron all over the world. The documents were selected from the 1950–2022 time period and found 3527 documents were selected in English from different authors across the globe. There are many approaches that are targeted to visualise the author impact, countries collaboration, tree map, keywords used and conservation of saffron. Since, saffron has tremendous medicinal properties and has economic values. The study is the first bibliometric investigation from the Web of Science database reporting the data published in the form of articles and representing a standard reference for visualisation of future research in the various fields of medicine, plant science, pharmacy and pharmaceuticals. Gardenia is both a food and medicine plant. It is widely used for cardiovascular protection, and its main bioactive ingredient is crocetin. This study aims to observe the therapeutic effects of crocetin on chronic heart failure in rats induced by various etiologies. It further compares the efficacy differences between preventative and treatment administration, varying dosages, and treatment durations, to provide improved guidance for medication in heart failure rats and determine which categories of chronic heart failure rats might benefit most from crocetin. Chronic heart failure models induced by abdominal aorta constriction, renal hypertension, and coronary artery ligation were constructed. By examining cardiac function, blood biochemistry, and histopathology, the study assessed the preventive and therapeutic effects of crocetin on load-induced and myocardial ischemia-induced heart failure. The results showed that in all three models, both treatment and preventative administration of crocetin significantly improved chronic heart failure in rats, especially in preventative administration. The results indicate crocetin may be beneficial for improving symptoms and functional capacity in rats with heart failure. Furthermore, long-term administration was more effective than short-term administration across all three rat models, with therapeutic onset observed over 6 weeks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artemisia argyi is a traditional herbal medicine plant, and its folium artemisia argyi is widely in demand due to moxibustion applications globally. The Auxin/indole-3-acetic acid (Aux/IAA, or IAA) gene family has critical roles in the primary auxin-response process, with extensive involvement in plant development and stresses, controlling various essential traits of plants. However, the systematic investigation of the Aux/IAA gene family in A. argyi remains limited. In this study, a total of 61 Aux/IAA genes were comprehensively identified and characterized. Gene structural analysis indicated that 46 Aux/IAA proteins contain the four typical domains, and 15 Aux/IAA proteins belong to non-canonical IAA proteins. Collinear prediction and phylogenetic relationship analyses suggested that Aux/IAA proteins were grouped into 13 distinct categories, and most Aux/IAA genes might experience gene loss during the tandem duplication process. Promoter cis-element investigation indicated that Aux/IAA promoters contain a variety of plant hormone response and stress response cis-elements. Protein interaction prediction analysis demonstrated that AaIAA26/29/7/34 proteins are possibly core members of the Aux/IAA family interaction. Expression analysis in roots and leaves via RNA-seq data indicated that the expression of some AaIAAs exhibited tissue-specific expression patterns, and some AaIAAs were involved in the regulation of salt and saline-alkali stresses. In addition, RT-qPCR results indicated that AaIAA genes have differential responses to auxin, with complex response patterns in response to other hormones, indicating that Aux/IAA may play a role in connecting auxin and other hormone signaling pathways. Overall, these findings shed more light on AaIAA genes and offer critical foundational knowledge toward the elucidation of their function during plant growth, stress response, and hormone networking of Aux/IAA family genes in A. argyi. In alternative and complementary medicine, plant-based remedies have prominent roles. Here, we analysed the wild mint, Mentha longifolia (L.) L. collected from Mangesh/Duhok (Iraq) for its phenolic and essential oil content, total antioxidant status (TAS) and total oxidant status (TOS), DPPH free radical scavenging activity, antibacterial, antiproliferative, and DNA protecting activities. Specifically, a Soxhlet apparatus was used to extract the aerial portions of the plant with methanol as well as dichloromethane. The GC-MS instrument measured the amount of essential oils present. A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyse the phenolic composition. A Rel Assay kit was used to determine the TAS and TOS levels. Further, DPPH assay was used to quantify antioxidant capacity; MTT assay for antiproliferative efficacy against A549 cancer cell line; and the ability to shield pBR322 supercoiled DNA was tested.. Standard bacteria and fungus strains were used in an agar dilution assay to measure antimicrobial activity. The results demonstrated the plant's capacity to inhibit cell proliferation, low DPPH activity, and significant antimicrobial activity. The plant was found to have TAS value of 2.860 mmol/L, TOS value of 14.858 µmol/L, and an OSI (oxidative stress index) value of 0.522. At 200 µg/mL, the plant extract exhibited DNA-protective effect. The GC-MS study also found the presence of four different chemicals [1-isopropyl-4- methyl-1,4-cyclohexadiene (C10H16), pulegone (C10H16O), phenol, 2-methyl-5-(1-methylethyl) (C10H14O) and caryophyllene (C15H24)]. Thladiantha nudiflora Hemsl. ex F.B.Forbes & Hemsl. 1887 (Cucurbitaceae) has been widely known as a traditional medicine plant. In this study, we sequenced, assembled, and annotated the complete chloroplast genome of T. nudiflora. The chloroplast genome of T. nudiflora is 156,824 base pair (bp) in length, containing a large single-copy region of 86,566 bp and a small single-copy region of 18,070 bp, separated by a pair of inverted repeats of 26,094 bp. The chloroplast genome contains 132 genes, including 87 protein-coding, 37 transfer RNA, and eight ribosomal RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis of the chloroplast genome revealed that species of the genus Thladiantha were clustered together in the phylogenetic trees. This study will not only shed light on T. nudiflora's evolutionary position but also provide valuable chloroplast genomic information for future studies into the origins and diversification of the genus Thladiantha and the Cucurbitaceae family. The Song dynasty (970–1279 CE) was an era of a prosperous commodity economy, culture and education in China history, with various descriptions of cosmetic usage. However, archaeological evidence for cosmetic application during this period was rare, which hindered comprehensive understanding. During the excavation of the Shijiatang cemetery, two small and exquisite porcelain containers with suspected cosmetics were unearthed from tomb M50, which belonged to a female with an established social position. In this study, ATR‐FTIR, SEM, GC/MS, Py‐GC/MS and GC‐C‐IRMS were used to characterize the residue inside the container, and the results demonstrate that the residue is made of minerals, non‐ruminant animal adipose fat and plant ingredients. In particular, the detection of arundoin and cylindrin indicates that the herbal medicine plant Bai Mao (Imperata cylindrica) was likely used as a cosmetic ingredient by the noble class of the Song dynasty. This study provides a precious example of cosmetic production in the Song dynasty and, together with the prevalence of cosmetic use described in historical records, suggests a boom in the cosmetics industry during that period. Luteolin (Lut) is a flavonoid compound with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and other biological properties. Lut has been used in many fields such as biomedicine and food safety. Therefore, the quantitative measurement of Lut is of great significance. In this study, an electrochemical sensor based on aminated multi-walled carbon (NH2-MWCNTs), sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), ZIF-67 and chitosan (Chi) is developed for the measurement of Lut. NH2-MWCNTs are better dispersed by CMC, and NH2-MWCNTs are cross-linked with ZIF-67, which further improves the response and sensitivity of the electrode to the Lut due to the peroxide-like properties of ZIF-67. The detection limit and linear range of the electrochemical sensor for Lut are 2.1 nM and 0.1–7 μM, respectively. Dandelion is a traditional Chinese medicine plant containing Lut component. The prepared electrochemical sensor is also used to analysis Lut content in various parts of dandelion. The results show that the flowers part of dandelion exhibits the highest concentration of Lut; while, the leaves contain a moderate amount, and the roots are nearly devoid of Lut. These results are consistent with those obtained by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography. Nanoparticles crafted through biological processes show potential for advancing medicine. Plant-derived compounds, produced through environmentally friendly green synthesis, present distinctive and beneficial applications in the field of nanomedicine. This study describes an easy, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-efficient method to create copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) using whole part of Nicotiana plumbaginifolia Viv. extract. The characterization involved various techniques like solid UV-Visible-DR analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), EDAX analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmitted electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) were found to be quasi-spherical pattern, with sizes ranging from 12 to 14 nm, and exhibited a crystal structure identified as monoclinic. The resulting copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) were examined for antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. It showed suppressing bacterial growth against tested human pathogenic bacteria, emphasizing their potential as antimicrobial agents. Results revealed that the maximum zone of inhibition was observed when the concentrations (25, 50, and 100 µL,) of NPs is increased against S. aureus i.e. 17 mm, 20 mm and 22 mm respectively. Whereas findings also reveal potent antioxidant activity, with escalating CuO nanoparticle concentrations correlating to increased percentage inhibition 50 µg/mL - 1.68%, 100 µg/mL - 10.45%, 150 µg/mL - 18.54%, 200 µg/mL - 37.83%, and 250 µg/mL - 51.72%. Large investments over many decades in genomics in diverse fields such as precision medicine, plant biology, and recently, in space life science research and astronaut omics were not accompanied by a commensurate focus on high-throughput and granular characterization of phenotypes, thus resulting in a "phenomics lag" in systems science. There are also limits to what can be achieved through increases in sample sizes in genotype–phenotype association studies without commensurate advances in phenomics. These challenges beg a question. What might next-generation phenomics look like, given that the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence offer prospects and challenges for high-throughput digital phenotyping as a key component of next-generation phenomics? While attempting to answer this question, I also reflect on governance of digital technology and next-generation phenomics. I argue that it is timely to broaden the technical discourses through a lens of political theory. In this context, this analysis briefly engages with the recent book "The Earthly Community: Reflections on the Last Utopia," written by the historian and political theorist Achille Mbembe. The question posed by the book, "Will we be able to invent different modes of measuring that might open up the possibility of a different aesthetics, a different politics of inhabiting the Earth, of repairing and sharing the planet?" is directly relevant to healing of human diseases in ways that are cognizant of the interdependency of human and nonhuman animal health, and critical and historically informed governance of digital technologies that promise to benefit next-generation phenomics. Objective: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders, with diarrhea predominant IBS (IBS-D) as the most common subtype. Increasing evidence reported that the gut microbiota-mediated serotonin pathway plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of IBS-D. In this study, potential herbal medicine, plant extracts and its monomers that can be employed as the candidate molecules for IBS-D through gut microbiota-mediated serotonin pathway were reviewed. Key findings: The bacteria indigenous to gut microbiota regulates serotonin pathway, mainly increasing tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) and decreasing serotonin reuptake transporter (SERT), by activating cyclooxygenase/prostaglandin E2 (COX/PGE2) signaling. It further accelerated gastrointestinal motility and visceral hyperalgesia. Herbal medicine prescription including Tongxie yaofang and Shugan decoction, as well as some monomers of flavonoid and polyphenol compounds can be regarded as the potential agents for IBS-D. The predominate mechanisms were related to regulating serotonin pathway by driving on the specific bacterial abundance (such as Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes). However, there are few reports on which specific bacteria species play a regulatory role in serotonin pathway, and most of these effective agents were only evidenced by preclinical studies. Aim: The objective of this study is to explore the potential of homoeopathic remedies in enhancing the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites in endangered medicinal plants. Background: Plants serve as a valuable source of medicine. Plant-based medicines are known for their simplicity, efficiency, and a broad range of activity with well-documented preventative or therapeutic effects. Secondary metabolites are active chemical components found in plants that are responsible for their medicinal properties. However, population growth, increased demand, and illicit trafficking is driving the depletion of medicinal plants, besides many are on the verge of extinction. The synthesis of phytochemicals in plants for medicinal purpose can be improved through various tissue culture techniques and homoeopathic remedies have been found to boost the generation of secondary metabolites. Methodology and Results: A comprehensive review of the scientific literature was carried out by searching through various databases, including Scopus, PubMed, Wiley, Google Scholar. Numerous investigations were conducted to assess the impact of homoeopathic remedies on the growth, phytochemical composition, and essential oil production of various medicinal plants. The most studied homoeopathic preparations were Phosphorus, Sulphur, and Silicea. Homoeopathic preparations were observed to improve photosynthetic rates by distributing greater amounts of photo-assimilated substances in the leaves, ultimately leading to enhanced growth. Homoeopathic medications work on the initial substances like pyruvic acid, ornithine and proline that contribute to the formation of shikimic acid and acetate, while providing the vital energy needed for plants to grow and flourish. These processes generate organic compounds that serve as precursors for various categories of secondary metabolites. Conclusion: Overall, the results suggest that homoeopathic preparations can positively impact the essential oil yield, growth, phytochemical profile of medicinal plants and expanded possibilities for the synthesis of pharmacologically and biologically active compounds. Research into applying homoeopathy to grow medicinal plants is highly relevant, as it's a long-standing practice aiming to optimize production and improve chemical constituent quality. Purpose: The purpose of this paper, applying concepts in the plant-based food sector, is a focus on the competitive rival trap for startup firms, with their initial advantage for under-served market segments, only to be overtaken by scale, speed, and brands of incumbent brand firms. As a case study of industry transformation, the food production sector illustrates how organizational innovation brings new forms of rivalry, from the farm gate to the kitchen plate. As a result, startups face a rivalry trap, if unable to scale quickly, as incumbents reframe their strategic response with startup acquisitions, corporate incubators or alliance partnerships consumer demand. Design/methodology/approach: This paper outlines the features of precision agriculture, a new paradigm for agriculture and food production, requiring new competences and skillsets in the protein revolution, including issues like virus, bacteria and the molecular structure of food groups, animal breeding and veterinary medicine. Plant-based foods is used as a case study for startups and the rivalry trap. Findings: The emergence of plant-based foods is a case study of market opportunity and creative destruction, where the potential market varies from $25bn to $72bn, and growing faster in the dairy sector. Throughout human history, the utilization of medicinal herbs has been recognized as a crucial defense against various ailments, including cancer. Natural products with potential anticancer properties, capable of inducing apoptosis in cancer cells, have garnered substantial attention. One such agent under investigation is guggulsterone (GS), a phytosterol derived from the gum resin of the Commiphora mukul tree. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of recent studies elucidating the anticancer molecular mechanisms and molecular targets of GS, guiding future research and potential applications as an adjuvant drug in cancer therapy. Recent in vivo and in vitro studies have explored the biological activities of the active ingredients in Commiphora mukul. Specifically, GS emerges as a potential cancer chemopreventive and therapeutic agent. The investigations delve into the impact of GS on constitutively activated survival pathways, including Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB), and PI3-kinase/AKT signaling pathways. These pathways regulate antiapoptotic and proinflammatory genes, exerting control over growth and inflammatory responses. The findings highlight the potential of GS in disrupting survival pathways crucial for cancer cell viability. The inhibition of JAK/STAT, NF-kB, and PI3-kinase/AKT signaling pathways positions GS as a promising candidate for cancer therapy. The review synthesizes evidence from diverse studies, underscoring the multifaceted biological activities of GS in cancer prevention and treatment. To advance our understanding, future clinical and translational studies are imperative to determine effective doses in humans. Additionally, there is a need for the development of new pharmaceutical forms of GS to optimize therapeutic effects. The present study evaluated the parasite activity of aqueous extracts (AE) of neem leaves (Azadirachta indica) on parasitized Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Concurrent infection with Dactylogyrus sp. and Centrocestus formosanus metacercariae was observed after clinical and parasitological investigations. A 240 Nile tilapia fish represented the four groups in the experimental design. They were used to assess the efficiency of aqueous extracts (long bath, 7 days) against parasite-infested fish: the group without A. indica extract (control, T1), T2 (1.0 g/L), T3 (2.0 g/L), and T4 (3.0 g/L). Results revealed that neem extract groups reduced the mean intensity of parasites (Dactylogyrus sp., C. formosanus) more than the control group partially at T4 (3.0 g/L). Fish exposed to neem leaf extracts showed significant downregulation of inflammatory and pro-inflammatory and immune genes (IL-1ß, IL-8; IL-10, Cox-2, lysozyme, C3, and HSP70) along with a significant increase in antioxidative genes (SOD and CAT) partially at T4 (3 g/L). Histological examinations of fish liver and gill tissues exposed to neem extract showed a return to normal histoarchitecture, especially at T4. However, antioxidant (CAT and GSH) activities increased in gill and liver tissues exposed to A. indica extract, especially at T4. Compared to control fish, the MDA levels decreased significantly in fish treated with A. indica extract, partially in the T4 group. Immune indices (complement 3, nitric oxide, and lysozyme activity) of infected fish treated with A. indica leaves extract displayed the highest value compared to the control one, especially at T4. The study assumed that an aqueous extract of A. indica inclusion at the rate of 3.0 g/L in a long-term bath is recommended to increase the resistance against parasitic infection and improve Nile tilapia's health welfare. Background: Montrichardia linifera (Arruda) Schott is popularly known as "aninga," "aningaçu," "aningaíba," and "aninga-do-igapó." Compresses and plasters made from the leaves of this medicinal plant are used to treat abscesses, tumors, and pain caused by stingray stings. Aim of the study: This study aimed to chemically characterize the methanolic extract of M. linifera leaves (MEMLL), as well as to verify their acute oral toxicity and antinociceptive potential. Materials and methods: The leaves were collected during the rainy season, and the methanolic extract was obtained after gradient extraction using different solvents. MEMLL was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Acute oral toxicity testing followed the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guideline 423. Subsequently, acetic acid, hot plate, and formalin tests were used to evaluate the analgesic effects. Results: In the chemical characterization of MEMLL by HPLC, three flavonoids were identified: rutin, quercetin, and epicatechin. In addition, when NMR spectroscopy was performed, rutin and quercetin were again identified, as well as the chemical compounds luteolin and chrysoeriol. In the acute oral toxicity test, MEMLL showed no physiological or behavioral changes. In the nociceptive study, MEMLL showed an effect at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg in the 0.6% acetic acid test, i.e., 51.46% and 75.08%, respectively. In the hot plate test, the MEMLL group at a dose of 50 mg/kg was effective at times of 30 and 60 min, i.e., 164.43% and 122.95%, respectively. Similarly, the MEMLL group at a dose of 100 mg/kg was also effective in increasing latency at times of 30 and 60 min, i.e., 162.62% and 136.68%, respectively. In the formalin test, MEMLL showed an antinociceptive effect on neurogenic pain at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg when compared to the control group, 35.25% and 52.30%, respectively. In the inflammatory phase, inhibition was observed in the MEMLL at doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg, i.e., 66.39% and 72.15%, respectively. Conclusion: MEMLL has analgesic properties and is non-toxic, validating the Brazilian ethnopharmacological use of this plant for pain treatment. Background: Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are an integral part of agricultural practices due to their roles in promoting plant growth, improving soil conditions, and suppressing diseases. However, researches on the PGPR in the rhizosphere of carrots, an important vegetable crop, is relative limited. Therefore, this study aimed to isolate and characterize PGPR strains from the rhizosphere soil of greenhouse-grown carrots, with a focus on their potential to stimulate carrot growth. Methods: Through a screening process, 12 high-efficiency phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria, one nitrogen-fixing strain, and two potassium-solubilizing strains were screened. Prominent among these were Bacillus firmus MN3 for nitrogen fixation ability, Acinetobacter pittii MP41 for phosphate solubilization, and Bacillus subtilis PK9 for potassium-solubilization. These strains were used to formulate a combined microbial consortium, N3P41K9, for inoculation and further analysis. Results: The application of N3P41K9, significantly enhanced carrot growth, with an increase in plant height by 17.1% and root length by 54.5% in a pot experiment, compared to the control group. This treatment also elevated alkaline-hydrolyzable nitrogen levels by 72.4%, available phosphorus by 48.2%, and available potassium by 23.7%. Subsequent field trials confirmed the efficacy of N3P41K9, with a notable 12.5% increase in carrot yields. The N3P41K9 treatment had a minimal disturbance on soil bacterial diversity and abundance, but significantly increased the prevalence of beneficial genera such as Gemmatimonas and Nitrospira. Genus-level redundancy analysis indicated that the pH and alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen content were pivotal in shaping the bacterial community composition. Discussion: The findings of this study highlight the feasibility of combined microbial consortium in promoting carrot growth, increasing yield, and enriching the root environment with beneficial microbes. Background: Cancer is an assortment of diseases resulting from disrupting cell cycle regulation. It is characterised by the proliferation of cells in an unregulated manner. The development of cancer can be attributed to a variety of factors, both external and internal. Various plants are rich in a variety of bioactive phytochemicals and essential nutrients. Several studies over the past few decades have shed light on the significant role of these phytochemicals in preventing chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and coronary heart disease. The MTT in vitro cell proliferation assay known for its high reliability and commonly used to measure whole-cell cytotoxicity across various cell lines is a commonly employed method for assessing the initial effectiveness of synthetic derivatives and natural products in combating cancer. Methods: For the current study wild edible fruits were collected from different regions of Mizoram, northeast India during 2020-2021. The study involved conducting an MTT in vitro cell proliferation assay on A549 cell lines using methanolic extract of seven wild edible fruits. Result: The methanolic extract of the seven wild edible fruits exhibited a significant cytotoxic effect on the A549 cell lines. Tamarindus indica demonstrated the lowest IC50 value of 119.77±0.20 µg/ml indicating its high cytotoxicity against A549 cell lines, followed by Citrus grandis with an IC50 value of 176.63±10.66 µg/ml among the seven wild edible fruits studied. This study investigates non-rhizobial endophytic bacteria in the root nodules of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L), faba bean (Vicia faba), and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp), as well as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the rhizospheric soil of chickpea and faba bean. Out of the 34 endophytic bacterial populations examined, 31 strains were identified as non-rhizobial based on nodulation tests. All strains were assessed for their plant growth-promoting (PGP) activities in vitro. The results revealed that most isolates exhibited multiple PGP activities, such as nitrogen fixation, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and ammonia (NH3) production, phosphate solubilization, and exopolysaccharide production. The most effective PGP bacteria were selected for 16S rRNA analysis. Additionally, a total of 36 species of native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) were identified. Acaulospora (100%) and Scutellospora (91.66%) were the most prevalent genera in Cicer arietinum L. and Vicia faba L. plants, respectively. Acaulospora also exhibited the highest spore density and relative abundance in both plants. Moreover, the root colonization of Cicer arietinum L. and Vicia faba L. plants by hyphae, vesicles, and arbuscules (HVA) was significant. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into non-rhizobial endophytic bacteria associated with legume root nodules and the diversity of AMF. These organisms have great potential for PGP and can be manipulated by co-inoculation with rhizobia to enhance their biofertilizer effectiveness. Drug discovery is the process by which new drug candidates are discovered and drug development takes place. To enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and speed of the drug discovery process, machine learning (ML) could play a transformative role. For this research study, antidiabetic natural compounds from C. intybus, which is commonly known as chicory, were selected, as they have promising antidiabetic properties that can complement conventional diabetes treatments. A bioactive natural compound dataset was retrieved on the chicory plant using Indian Medicinal Plants, Phytochemistry, and Therapeutics (IMPPAT) public source information. This collected dataset was analyzed for its absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) properties using the SwissADME online tool. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis were performed using trial-version XLSTAT software 2014.5.03 and Python. The obtained dataset from SwissADME was subjected to cleaning, after that, it was used to develop machine learning models, such as support vacuum (SVM) ML, random forest (RF), Naive Bayes (NB), and decision tree (DT). The Lipinski rule of violation was chosen as the target variable. To improve the vitality of the created ADME dataset, PCA, a biplot graph, and correlation analysis were carried out. A large dataset of naturally occurring antidiabetic compounds was used to predict the drug-likeness of ML models that were effectively deployed on heterogeneous ADME datasets. The genus Lagerstroemia L. (Lythraceae), known for its exquisite flowers and prolonged flowering period, is commonly employed in traditional medicinal systems across Asian countries, where it has always been consumed as tea or employed to address ailments such as diabetes, urinary disorders, coughs, fevers, inflammation, pain, and anesthesia. Its diverse uses may be attributed to its rich active ingredients. Currently, at least 364 biological compounds have been identified from Lagerstroemia extracts, encompassing various types such as terpenes, flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, and phenylpropanoids. Extensive in vitro and in vivo experiments have examined the pharmacological activities of different extracts, revealing their potential in various domains, including but not limited to antidiabetic, anti-obesity, antitumor, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and hepatoprotective effects. Additionally, 20 core components have been proven to be associated with antidiabetic and hypoglycemic effects of Lagerstroemia. Overall, Lagerstroemia exhibit substantial medicinal potential, and the alignment between its traditional applications and contemporary pharmacological findings present promising opportunities for further investigation, particularly in food and health products, drug development, herbal teas, and cosmetics. However, evidence-based pharmacological research has largely been confined to in vitro screening and animal model, lacking clinical trials and bioactive compound isolations. Background: Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a significant contributor to renal dysfunction, acute kidney injury (AKI), and associated morbidity and mortality. Resveratrol, a polyphenol and phytoalexin, is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. This study investigates the nephroprotective potential of resveratrol in a rat model of renal IRI. Materials and methods: Twenty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: Sham, IRI, DMSO, and Resveratrol. The Sham group underwent identical procedures without renal pedicle clamping, while the IRI group experienced 30 min of ischemia followed by 2 h of reperfusion. The DMSO group received dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) intraperitoneally 30 min before ischemia, and the Resveratrol group received 30 mg/kg resveratrol intraperitoneally 30 min before ischemia. Biochemical parameters (Urea, creatinine, IL-1β, NF-κβ, SOD, GSH, Bcl-2, and caspase-3) and histopathological changes were assessed. Results: IRI caused a substantial increase in serum creatinine, Urea, IL-1β, NF-κβ, and caspase-3 levels, while simultaneously decreasing SOD, GSH, and Bcl-2 levels. Resveratrol treatment mitigated these effects by lowering inflammatory and apoptotic markers, enhancing antioxidant defenses, and improving histological outcomes. The use of complete organelle genomes, including chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes, is a powerful molecular method for studying biological evolution and gene transfer. However, in the case of Polygonaceae, an important family with numerous edible, medicinal, and ornamental species, the mitochondrial genomes of only three species have been sequenced and analyzed. In this study, we present the mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes of two important Tibetan medicinal plants, Bistorta viviparum and B. macrophyllum. All the organelle genomes are assembled into a single circular structure and contain a common set of 32 protein-coding genes (PCGs). Some genes such as rps2 and ndhF were found to have high nucleotide polymorphism (Pi) in the chloroplast genomes, while cox1, mttB and rps12 showed pronounced Pi values in the mitochondrial genomes. Furthermore, our analysis revealed that most chloroplast genes and mitochondrial PCGs in Polygonaceae plants are under purifying selection. However, a few genes, including the chloroplast gene psaJ and the mitochondrial genes ccmFc, atp8 and nad4, showed positive selection in certain Polygonaceae plants, as indicated by a Ka/Ks ratio greater than one. Structural variation analysis revealed a wealth of differences between the mitochondrial genomes of five Polygonaceae species, with a particularly notable large-scale inversion observed between Reynoutria japonica and Fallopia aubertii. Furthermore, an analysis of the homologous sequences in the chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes revealed that the rps7 has been transferred from the chloroplast to the mitochondrial genome in all five Polygonaceae species. Finally, ecological niche models were constructed for B. viviparum and B. macrophyllum, indicating that mean annual temperature and altitude are the main climatic factors influencing the distribution of both species. Although the current distribution of B. viviparum is significantly wider than that of B. macrophyllum, projections suggest that the optimal growth ranges of both species will expand in the future, with B. macrophyllum potentially exceeding B. viviparum. Malaxidinae is one of the most confusing groups in the Orchidaceae classification. Previous phylogenetic analyses have revealed that the relationships between the taxa in Malaxidinae have not yet been reliably established, using only a few plastome regions and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS). In the present study, the complete plastomes of Oberonia integerrima and Crepidium purpureum were assembled using high-throughput sequencing. Combined with publicly available complete plastome data, this resulted in a dataset of 19 plastomes, including 17 species of Malaxidinae. The plastome features and phylogenetic relationships were compared and analyzed. The results showed the following: (1) Malaxidinae species plastomes possess the quadripartite structure of typical angiosperms, with sizes ranging from 142,996 to 158,787 bp and encoding from 125 to 133 genes. The ndh genes were lost or pseudogenized to varying degrees in six species. An unusual inversion was detected in the large single-copy region (LSC) of Oberonioides microtatantha. (2) Eight regions, including ycf1, matK, rps16, rpl32, ccsA-ndhD, clpP-psbB, trnFGAA-ndhJ, and trnSGCU-trnGUCC, were identified as mutational hotspots. (3) Based on complete plastomes, 68 protein-coding genes, and 51 intergenic regions, respectively, our phylogenetic analyses revealed the genus-level relationships in this subtribe with strong support. Background: There is renewed interest in the use of ancient herbal remedies for their potential health benefits, particularly in the psychological domain. One herb that is receiving growing attention is lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) which has received considerable interest for its influence on the brain. Lemon balm boasts an array of phytochemicals, including rosmarinic acid, citral, oleanolic acid, and ursolic acid, which are believed to underpin these effects on psychological well-being. Pharmacological evidence from animal and cellular work reveals that lemon balm and its components may modulate several brain signalling pathways, including GABAergic, cholinergic, and serotonergic systems. Results/Conclusions: Although further robust randomised controlled trials using lemon balm are required, existing research indicates that lemon balm holds promise as a calming agent exhibiting both anxiolytic and anti-depressant properties and can elicit cognitive and sleep-quality enhancement.
