ARID4A plays an important role in regulating gene expression and cell proliferation. ARID4A belongs to the AT-rich interaction domain (ARID)-containing family, and a PWWP domain immediately precedes its ARID region. The molecular mechanism and structural basis of ARID4A are largely unknown. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) revealed that a novel heterozygous missense variant, ARID4A c.1231 C G (p.His411Asp), was associated with schizophrenia (SCZ) in this study. We determined the crystal structure of the PWWP-ARID tandem at 2.05 Å, revealing an unexpected mode in which ARID4A assembles with its PWWP and ARID from a structural and functional supramodule. Our results further showed that compared with the wild type, the p.His411Asp ARID mutant protein adopts a less compact conformation and exhibits a weaker dsDNA-binding ability. The p.His411Asp mutation decreased the number of cells that were arrested in the G0-G1 phase and caused more cells to progress to the G2-M phase. In addition, the missense mutation promoted the proliferation of HEK293T cells. In conclusion, our data provide evidence that ARID4A p.His411Asp could cause a conformational change in the ARID4A ARID domain, influence the DNA binding function, and subsequently disturb the cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase. ARID4A is likely a susceptibility gene for SCZ; thus, these findings provide new insight into the role of ARID4A in psychiatric disorders.

The cT3 substage criteria based on extramural depth of tumor invasion in rectal cancer have several limitations.This study proposed that the distance between the deepest tumor invasion and mesorectal fascia on pretherapy MRI can distinguish the prognosis of patients with cT3 rectal cancer.This is a cohort study.This study included a prospective, single-center, observational cohort and a retrospective, multicenter, independent validation cohort.Patients who had cT3 rectal cancer with negative mesorectal fascia undergoing neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by radical surgery were included in 4 centers in China from January 2013 to September 2014.Baseline MRI with the distance between the deepest tumor invasion and mesorectal fascia, extramural depth of tumor invasion, and mesorectum thickness were measured.The cutoff of the distance between the deepest tumor invasion and mesorectal fascia was determined by time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves, supported by a 5-year progression rate from the prospective cohort, and was then validated in a retrospective cohort.There were 124 and 274 patients included in the prospective and independent validation cohorts. The distance between the deepest tumor invasion and mesorectal fascia was the only predictor for cancer-specific death (HR, 0.1; 95% CI, 0.0-0.7) and was also a significant predictor for distant recurrence (HR, 0.4; 95% CI, 0.2-0.9). No statistically significant difference was observed in prognosis between patients classified as T3a/b and T3c/d.The sample size is relatively small, and the study focused on cT3 rectal cancers with a negative mesorectal fascia.A cutoff of 7 mm of the distance between the deepest tumor invasion and mesorectal fascia on baseline MRI can distinguish cT3 rectal cancer from a different prognosis. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is spreading rapidly in Asia. This virus is transmitted by the Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis), which has parthenogenetically and sexually reproducing populations. Parthenogenetic populations were found in ≥15 provinces in China and strongly correlated with the distribution of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome cases. However, distribution of these cases was poorly correlated with the distribution of populations of bisexual ticks. Phylogeographic analysis suggested that the parthenogenetic population spread much faster than bisexual population because colonization is independent of sexual reproduction. A higher proportion of parthenogenetic ticks was collected from migratory birds captured at an SFTSV-endemic area, implicating the contribution to the long-range movement of these ticks in China. The SFTSV susceptibility of parthenogenetic females was similar to that of bisexual females under laboratory conditions. These results suggest that parthenogenetic Asian longhorned ticks, probably transported by migratory birds, play a major role in the rapid spread of SFTSV.

The Jinjiang oyster Crassostrea ariakensis, naturally distributing in estuarine regions with low salinity, is an important economic and ecological species in China. However, studies on its genomics and population genetics remain lacking. Here, we assembled the chromosome-level genome of a female C. ariakensis and re-sequenced 261 individuals from five locations in China representing three typical habitats. The C. ariakensis genome was 662.9 Mb with contig N50 length of 5.9 Mb using PacBio HiFi-CCS long reads, and 99.83% sequences were anchored onto 10 pseudo-chromosomes using Hi-C data. A total of 26,354 protein-coding genes were predicted. We identified three significantly expanded gene families which are closely associated with osmotic pressure regulation, including CDO, SLC13 and SDR. Population structure analysis revealed that the C. ariakensis from five locations were clustered into three typical groups (northern, southern and Shanghai) (K=3) and their phylogenetic relationship was consistently correlated to their geographical distribution. Furtherly, the differentiation between northern and southern groups was clearly demonstrated by estimated population differentiation coefficient (FST = 0.1154), and the PSMC distribution showed the two groups of effective population size separated at 0.1 MYA. Meanwhile gene flow from southern to Shanghai was detected. Selective sweep analysis between northern and southern group detected genes associated with heat response and salinity adaptation. This study could provide valuable genomic resources and information for further research on the molecular evolution, genetic breeding, biological function and evolutionary adaptation of C. ariakensis.

According to the positioning experiment of straw returning in the continuous field 7a, the effects of straw returning combined with chemical fertilizer on soil total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), labile organic carbon (LOC), carbon pool management index (CPMI), and crop yield in farmland soil profiles (0-20, 20-50, and 50-80 cm) in the Chaohu Lake area were studied. There were four treatments:no straw returning+no fertilization (CK), conventional fertilization (F), straw returning+conventional fertilization (SF1), and straw returning+80% conventional fertilization (SF2). The changes in soil total organic carbon and component content, CPMI, and rape rice yield in different soil layers were analyzed. Taking CK as a reference, conventional fertilization and straw returning combined with chemical fertilizer increased the content of total organic carbon and components in the soil vertical profile, and the content of total organic carbon and components in different soil layers decreased gradually with the increase in soil depth. In the 0-20 cm soil layer, compared with that in the F treatment, the SF1 and SF2 treatments significantly increased the contents of TOC, DOC, POC, and LOC by 14.23%-28.97%, 7.86%-27.01%, 16.46%-24.24%, and 5.89%-6.64%, respectively (

Background With the accelerated global integration and the impact of climatic, ecological and social environmental changes, China will continue to face the challenge of the outbreak and spread of emerging infectious diseases and traditional ones. This study aims to explore the spatial and temporal evolutionary characteristics of the incidence of Class B notifiable infectious diseases in China from 2007 to 2020, and to forecast the trend of it as well. Hopefully, it will provide a reference for the formulation of infectious disease prevention and control strategies. Methods Data on the incidence rates of Class B notifiable infectious diseases in 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions of China from 2007 to 2020 were collected for the prediction of the spatio-temporal evolution and spatial correlation as well as the incidence of Class B notifiable infectious diseases in China based on global spatial autocorrelation and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA). Results From 2007 to 2020, the national incidence rate of Class B notifiable infectious diseases (from 272.37 per 100,000 in 2007 to 190.35 per 100,000 in 2020) decreases year by year, and the spatial distribution shows an “east-central-west” stepwise increase. From 2007 to 2020, the spatial clustering of the incidence of Class B notifiable infectious diseases is significant and increasing year by year (Moran’s I index values range from 0.189 to 0.332, p < 0.05). The forecasted incidence rates of Class B notifiable infectious diseases nationwide from 2021 to 2024 (205.26/100,000, 199.95/100,000, 194.74/100,000 and 189.62/100,000) as well as the forecasted values for most regions show a downward trend, with only some regions (Guangdong, Hunan, Hainan, Tibet, Guangxi and Guizhou) showing an increasing trend year by year. Conclusions The current study found that since there were significant regional disparities in the prevention and control of infectious diseases in China between 2007 and 2020, the reduction of the incidence of Class B notifiable infectious diseases requires the joint efforts of the surrounding provinces. Besides, special attention should be paid to provinces with an increasing trend in the incidence of Class B notifiable infectious diseases to prevent the re-emergence of certain traditional infectious diseases in a particular province or even the whole country, as well as the outbreak and spread of emerging infectious diseases.

Objective Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a heterogeneous psychiatric disorder and considered to be one of the most common mental diseases worldwide. The antidepressant venlafaxine, as a serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, is applied to MDD relief. Solute carrier family 6 member 4 (SLC6A4) has been reported to promote the reuptake of serotonin and to be closely correlated to depression. The present study examined whether rs6354 and rs1487971 in SLC6A4 are associated with remission after venlafaxine treatment in MDD patients. Methods This study consisted of 195 Han Chinese patients with MDD, who accepted a 6-week treatment with venlafaxine. Two SLC6A4 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected from database of SNP and genotyped by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometer in MassARRAY Analyzer 4 platforms. The 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale was used to access the severity of major depression. Allele and genotype frequencies between patients in remission and nonremission were calculated with online software SHEsis. Results No significant differences in allele or genotype frequencies were observed in rs6354 and rs1487971. There were no significant associations between 2 SNPs and venlafaxine treatment outcome. Conclusions It suggested that rs6354 or rs1487971 within SLC6A4 appears not to be involved in the venlafaxine treatment outcome in Han Chinese patients with MDD.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread around the world. However, approaches to distinguish COVID-19 from pneumonia caused by other pathogens have not yet been reported. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 97 children with probable COVID-19. A total of 13 (13.4%) patients were confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection by nucleic acid RT-PCR testing, and 41 (42.3%) patients were found to be infected with other pathogens. Notably, no pathogen was detected in 43 (44.3%) patients. Among all patients, 25 (25.8%) had familial cluster exposure history, and 52 (53.6%) had one or more coexisting conditions. Fifteen (15.5%) patients were admitted or transferred to the PICU. In the 11 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 5 (45.5%) and 7 (63.6%) were positive for IgM and IgG against SARS-CoV-2, respectively. In 22 patients with suspected COVID-19, 1 (4.5%) was positive for IgG but negative for IgM. The most frequently detected pathogen was Mycoplasma pneumonia (29, 29.9%). One patient with confirmed COVID-19 died. Our results strongly indicated that the detection of asymptomatic COVID-19 or coexisting conditions must be strengthened in pediatric patients. These cases may be difficult to diagnose as COVID-19 unless etiologic analysis is conducted. A serologic test can be a useful adjunctive diagnostic tool in cases where SARS-CoV-2 infection is highly suspected but the nucleic acid test is negative. In this study, 50 surface water and sediment samples were collected from 25 sampling points in Qingpu District (including Taipu River basin, Jinze Reservoir, and Qingxi country park) in the Yangtze River Delta integration demonstration area, and 22 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the samples were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS-MS). The distribution characteristics, sources, and influencing factors of targeted PPCPs in the study area were studied in detail. The ecological and health risks of the target PPCPs were evaluated using the quotients method. The results showed that a total of 19 PPCPs were detected in the surface water and sediment samples from 25 sampling points in Qingpu District, with total concentrations ranging from 0.06 to 178.67 ng·L

Selenium (Se) is a necessary micronutrient for humans, and its supplementation from crop grains is important to address the ubiquitous Se deficiency in people worldwide. Se uptake by crops largely depend on soil bioavailable Se rather than soil total Se content, which provides possibilities to explore the Se-rich crops in Se-poor area. Here, the possibility of cultivating Se-rich maize grains in Se-poor farmland was tested based on intensive field sampling and mathematical modelling. Sampling was conducted at county scale, and a total of 7779 topsoil samples and 109 maize samples with paired rhizosphere soils samples were collected. At the turn of the century, facing the challenge of information and technology, environmental education, and talent competition, the world's major environmentally, educationally developed countries have entered the wave of environmental education reform. This was promulgated in 1999, and our country also successively promulgated through “the central committee of the communist party of China under the State Council on deepening environmenta education reform and comprehensively promote quality environmental education decision” in 2001 the “basic teaching environmental education course reform outline (try out),” launched to “deepen the environmental education reform and comprehensively promote quality environmental education” for the purpose of the foundation environmental education course and teaching reform. The curriculum reform is characterized by government leadership, expert guidance, and teacher participation. Its specific approach is top-down, overall promotion, concept guidance, experimental exploration, and gradual expansion, which has achieved a lot of theoretical and practical achievements. However, the practice of more than ten years has proved that the goal of the curriculum reform of basic environmental education has not been safely realized, the classroom has not undergone fundamental changes, and the advanced curriculum concept and curriculum system have not been transformed into advanced classroom teaching practice. This paper mainly discusses the influencing factors of the policy environment of environmental education development in China and analyzes the trend of reform in combination with the history of environmental education. On the one hand, the research of this paper can enrich the research theory of pedagogy; on the other hand, it can provide reference for the practical environmental education reform and have rich significance in theory and practice.

Accurate localization of brain regions responsible for language and cognitive functions in epilepsy patients is important. Electrocorticography (ECoG)-based real-time functional mapping (RTFM) has been shown to be a safer alternative to electrical cortical stimulation mapping (ESM), which is currently the clinical/gold standard. Conventional methods for analyzing RTFM data mostly account for the ECoG signal in certain frequency bands, especially high gamma. Compared to ESM, they have limited accuracy when assessing channel responses. In the present study, we developed a novel RTFM method based on tensor component analysis (TCA) to address the limitations of current estimation methods. Our approach analyzes the whole frequency spectrum of the ECoG signal during natural continuous speech. We construct third-order tensors that contain multichannel time-frequency information and use TCA to extract low-dimensional temporal, spectral and spatial modes. Temporal modulation scores (correlation values) are then calculated between the time series of voice envelope features and TCA-estimated temporal courses, and significant temporal modulation determines which components' channel weightings are displayed to the neurosurgeon as a guide for follow-up ESM. In our experiments, data from thirteen patients with refractory epilepsy were recorded during preoperative evaluation for their epileptogenic zones (EZs), which were located adjacent to the eloquent cortex. Our results showed higher detection accuracy of our proposed method in a narrative speech task, suggesting that our method complements ESM and is an improvement over the prior RTFM method. To our knowledge, this is the first TCA-based method to pinpoint language-specific brain regions during continuous speech that uses whole-band ECoG.

A retrospective study of association between socioeconomy and prevalence of systemic comorbidities in oral cancer patients from 2003 to 2017 was performed in Guangxi Province, a southwestern part of China. According to the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) classification, 2814 patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip, oral cavity, and oropharynx and 423 patients with ameloblastoma were collected and assigned to the oral cancer group and control group, respectively. Shandong Province, China, has been implementing a malaria elimination program. In this study, we analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of malaria imported into Shandong Province between 2012 and 2017 to provide scientific data for the elimination of malaria. In this epidemiological study, we examined the status of malaria in 2012–2017 in Shandong Province, China. Data on all cases of malaria were collected from the online Infection Diseases Monitor Information System to describe and statistically analyze the sources of infection, species of parasite, populations affected, regional distributions, incidence, and temporal distributions of malaria. In total, 1053 cases of malaria were reported in 2012–2017, and all of them were imported. Plasmodium falciparum was the predominant species (77.6%) in Shandong Province; P. vivax malaria accounted for 10.9% of the total number of cases, P. ovale malaria for 2.9%, and P. malariae malaria for 8.2%. Most patients were male (96.8%), most were aged 21–50 years (87.2%), and migrant laborers (77.2%) and workers (6.6%) were at highest risk. The origin of the largest number of imported cases was Africa (93.4%), followed by Asia (5.9%) and Oceania (0.4%). Most cases of imported malaria occurred in June each year and 70% of cases were recorded in six cities during the period of 2012–2017. It is necessary to strengthen malaria surveillance among workers returning home from Africa and Southeast Asia, and to conduct timely blood tests to diagnose and treat imported infections.

Happiness and depression are interlinked and both heritable, while personality, as an important predictor of them, shares the genetic basis with them. We conjecture that genetic factors of depression can affect both depressive symptoms (DS) and subjective well-being (SWB), while personality traits play important roles in mediating this process. In this study, 878 Han Chinese college freshmen and 384 Han Chinese patients with the major depressive disorder (MDD) were included. Background and purpose Tianzhi granule (TZ) is usually used for patients with vascular dementia (VaD) in China. The aim was to assess the effect of TZ by a randomized clinical trial (RCT). Methods A 24-week RCT was conducted in 16 centres. Participants were grouped into TZ, donepezil or placebo. The co-primary outcomes were the Vascular Dementia Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (VADAS-cog) and Clinician’s Interview-based Impression of Change-plus caregiver information (CIBIC-plus). Results A total of 543 patients with mild to moderate VaD were enrolled, of whom 242 took TZ granules, 241 took donepezil, and 60 took placebo. The least-squares mean changes from baseline and 95% CI were 6.20 (5.31, 7.09) (TZ group), 6.53 (5.63, 7.42) (donepezil group) and 3.47 (1.76, 5.19) (placebo group), both TZ and donepezil showed small but significantly improvement compared with placebo group. The percent of improvement on the global impression which was measured by CIBIC-plus was 73.71% in TZ and 58.18% in placebo, there was significant different between TZ and placebo group (P = 0.004). No significant differences were observed between TZ and donepezil. No significant differences of adverse events were found. Conclusions TZ and donepezil could bring symptomatic benefit for mild to moderate VaD. ‘Shelving Disputes and Pursuing Joint Development’ (SDPJD) has for decades been China’s premier policy for resolving territorial disputes, especially those regarding islands. SDPJD is, however, commonly understood to be tripartite policy, in which ‘shelving disputes’ and ‘pursuing joint development’ are made conditional upon the principle of ‘sovereignty belongs to China’. Although SDPJD aims to peacefully settle China’s island territorial disputes in the East China Sea (Diaoyu Islands) and the South China Sea (Spratly Islands), the policy has not been particularly successful in practice. This is in part because, whereas ‘shelving disputes’ and ‘pursuing joint development’ are cooperative in nature, ‘sovereignty belongs to China’ is inherently confrontational. The prominence granted to ‘sovereignty belongs to China’ is linked to outmoded understanding of the concept of sovereignty and the tendency for Chinese scholars and officials to regard island territorial disputes as the zero-sum games. This paper argues that SDPJD’s success is dependent upon separating ‘sovereignty belongs to China’ from ‘shelving disputes’ and ‘pursuing joint development’ and perhaps abandoning the former principle entirely. China should pursue non-confrontation resolution to island territorial pursuits, especially in the contexts of efforts to develop a peaceful and cooperative 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road.

Although the evolution characteristics and drivers of urban form have received significant attention in the past, the homogenization trend of urban form has been neglected. This study examined the changing urban form of a large cohort of 1525 Chinese cities over an extended, 25-year period of rapid growth from 1990 to 2015. Landscape indices and principal component analysis were used to quantify urban form in terms of morphological and spatial complexity, as well as spatial agglomeration. Then the cosine similarity index was employed to measure the homogenization degree of urban form (HDUF) of the entire cohort and of four tiers of these cities that had been previously defined by the city tier system of China. The K-means algorithm and trajectory analysis were subsequently used to describe the homogenizing orientation of urban form. Our results indicate that the HDUF within tiers is increasing along similar trends that are offset over time. The highest tier cities began to homogenize after 1995, followed by intermediate and lower tiered cities, which began to homogenize from 2000 to 2005. The lowest tier cities began to homogenize after 2010. The homogenization trends were also apparent when analysis was conducted between different tiers. As of 1990, the orientation of urban form of more than 99% of the cities was characterized by regular form with low patch density, but by 2005, almost half of the cities were undergoing transition toward either a compact from, which was characterized by low patch number and shorter distance patch distribution, or a fragmented form, which was characterized by elevated patch number and longer distance patch distribution. The temporal pattern of homogenization and the observed bifurcated orientation of form indicate (i) that challenges currently faced by higher tier cities will confront lower tier cities in the future and (ii) that it is important to understand the mechanisms that govern the alternative trajectories toward compactness and fragmentation. Our study deepens the understanding of the urban form evolution and its driving mechanisms and provide a guiding framework to predict future urban development.

Based on the job demands-resources model and conservation of resource theory, this study investigated 456 Chinese college teachers’ work stress, stress mindset, resilience, emotional exhaustion, positive affect, and negative affect. The results of mediation analysis showed that resilience played a partial mediation role between work stress and emotional outcomes (emotional exhaustion, positive affect, and negative affect). Moreover, the results of a moderated mediation analysis showed that stress mindset moderated the relationship between work stress and resilience, and moderated the mediating effect of resilience between work stress and emotional outcomes (emotional exhaustion, positive affect, and negative affect). Specifically, work stress had a significant negative predictive effect on resilience when stress mindset is low (β = −0.54, p < 0.001); work stress could also negatively predict resilience when the stress mindset is high (β = −0.47, p < 0.001), but its effect decreased, and stress mindset negatively moderated the path between work stress and resilience. Finally, we discussed theoretical implications, practical implications, limitations, and future directions.

Precipitation anomaly grades are usually defined by the percentage anomaly (Pa) or probability distribution (Pd) methods. However, the difference between the two may lead to different estimates for the same events, creating difficulty in judging the severity of the events. Here, we quantify the difference in measuring precipitation variability in China between Pa and Pd methods and analyze physical meaning and influencing factors of the difference. There is an urgent need to explore the current situation of China's water pollution incidents for policymaking, accident prevention, and risk mitigation. This study analyzed 1528 water pollution incidents in China from 2001 to 2020 and explored the spatiotemporal characteristics and causes of incidents and consequent damage. The frequency of water pollution accidents increased in 2004, peaked in 2006, and decreased thereafter with a significant decline in 2016. Due to the developed river networks, high population densities, and increasing environmental awareness, pollution incidents were mostly concentrated in China's relatively industrially developed eastern coastal regions. Illegal emission is the major cause, accounting for 51% of all incidents, but with pipeline construction gradually approaching a peak, pipeline leakage poses a noteworthy risk in the future. Although the severity of accidents has reduced recently, it is still necessary to strengthen the risk prevention strategies for general and major accidents. Furthermore, three key factors, including economic development, regulations and legal system, and public participation in pollution supervision and control, which affect the trends and characteristics of water pollution incidents in China, were discussed. This paper offers valuable insights and suggestions that may have useful implications for policymaking and the prevention of water pollution.

In recent years, the naturally high background value region of Cd derived from the weathering of carbonate has received wide attention. Due to the significant difference in soil Cd content and bioavailability among different parent materials, the previous land classification scheme based on total soil Cd content as the classification standard, has certain shortcomings. This study aims to explore the factors influencing soil Cd bioavailability in typical karst areas of Guilin and to suggest a scientific and effective farmland use management plan based on the prediction model. A total of 9393 and 8883 topsoil samples were collected from karst and non-karst areas, respectively. Meanwhile, 149 and 145 rice samples were collected together with rhizosphere soil in karst and non-karst areas, respectively. The results showed that the higher CaO level in the karst area was a key factor leading to elevated soil pH value. Although Cd was highly enriched in karst soils, the higher pH value and adsorption of Mn oxidation inhibited Cd mobility in soils. Conversely, the Cd content in non-karst soils was lower, whereas the Cd level in rice grains was higher. To select the optimal prediction model based on the correlation between Cd bioaccumulation factors and geochemical parameters of soil, artificial neural network (ANN) and linear regression prediction models were established in this study. The ANN prediction model was more accurate than the traditional linear regression model according to the evaluation parameters of the test set. Furthermore, a new land classification scheme based on an ANN prediction model and soil Cd concentration is proposed in this study, making full use of the spatial resources of farmland to ensure safe rice consumption.

In this paper, a marine environmental sensitivity index system was constructed based on three factors: the marine biological species sensitivity, the marine ecological value sensitivity and the social and economic sensitivity. Combined with numerical simulations of 137Cs in the Beibu Gulf under the condition of a level-7 nuclear accident, a comprehensive risk assessment of marine radioactivity under the simulated accident in the Beibu Gulf was carried out. The results show that the areas at high risk and medium-to-high risk to marine radioactivity are mainly concentrated within 30 km of the Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Plant. The medium-risk areas are mainly distributed in sea areas within 30–50 km of the nuclear power plant, and the other sea areas are low-risk areas. The distribution of the risk sources and the characteristics of the regional tidal currents are the main factors affecting the magnitude and distribution of the comprehensive risk of regional marine radioactivity.

We characterized the tissue repair response after penetrating traumatic brain injury (pTBI) in this study. Seventy specific pathogen-free Kunming mice were randomly divided into the following groups: normal control, 1, 3, 7, 15, 21, and 30 days after pTBI. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence were performed to examine and monitor brain tissue morphology, and the distribution and expression of lymphatic-specific markers lymphatic vessel endothelial receptor-1 (LYVE-1), hematopoietic precursor cluster of differentiation 34 (CD34) antigen, and Prospero-related homeobox-1 (PROX1) protein. H&E staining revealed that damaged and necrotic tissues observed on day 1 at and around the injury site disappeared on day 7, and there was gradual shrinkage and disappearance of the lesion on day 30, suggesting a clearance mechanism. We explored the possibility of lymphangiogenesis causing this clearance as part of the post-injury response. Notably, expression of lymphangiogenesis markers LYVE-1, CD34, and PROX1 was detected in damaged mouse brain tissue but not in normal tissue. Moreover, new lymphatic cells and colocalization of LYVE-1/CD34 and LYVE-1/PROX1 were also observed. Our findings of the formation of new lymphatic cells following pTBI provide preliminary insights into a post-injury clearance mechanism in the brain. Although we showed that lymphatic cells are implicated in brain tissue repair, further research is required to clarify the origin of these cells.

Seleniferous soil and crops have recently attracted attention worldwide. Cultivating seleniferous crops in the absence of heavy metals is greatly challenging. This study aimed to develop approaches for the safe exploitation of seleniferous soil. We collected 246 pairs of rice grain samples and their corresponding rhizosphere soil samples and 8542 topsoil samples from Binyang and Xingbin in Guangxi. The Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn, and Se contents of soil and rice grain samples were tested. Several soil properties, including CaO, Mn, Mo, and S contents; total organic carbon content; and pH were also measured. Soil and rice grain samples that were classified as seleniferous accounted for 85.77% and 88% of all samples, respectively. More than 30% of soil and rice grain samples were potentially polluted by Cd. The percentage of seleniferous rice grain samples increased as soil Se concentration increased. Notably, however, the percentage of Cd-polluted rice grain samples decreased with the increase in soil Cd concentration. Models for the prediction of BAFs of heavy metal and Se were accurately established on the basis of significant partial correlations between log10 (BAFs) and log10 (soil properties). Farmlands with seleniferous soil under preferential protection and with safely exploited seleniferous soil accounted for 82.61% of the total study area. Sites that require remediation or land-use changes accounted for only 14.7% of the total study area and were mainly distributed in the center of the study area.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is a chemolithotrophic bioprocess which has been widely applied in the treatment of different concentrations of ammonium-containing wastewaters. However, there is less attention on the problem that the instantaneous growth rate (or metabolic rate) and equilibrium growth rate were un-synchronous for anammox bacteria due to their long generation time and self-immobilization of the granular sludge which could lead to the inaccurate estimation. In this study, the anammox process was firstly divided to four typical feast-famine (starvation, satiation, tolerance and poison) states based on the combination of both off-site and in-situ anammox reaction kinetics. Then, four respective lab-scale bioreactors were operated at each state for over a year to achieve stable anammox performance. The results showed that the nitrogen removal rates of bioreactors were 0.53, 2.24, 9.30 and 12.96 kg N/(m³·d); and the specific anammox activities of granular sludge were 188.94 (48%), 313.29 (79%), 397.50 (100%) and 198.60 (50%) mg N/(g VSS·d) which could reflect the reactivity of each feast-famine state. The stable microbial communities of bioreactors were cultured and analyzed, whose species diversity went down with the decrease of Shannon and ACE index. The relative abundance of anammox bacteria increased from 11% to 57% from starvation to poison state. Candidatus Brocadia/Nitrospira, Candidatus Kuenenia and Brocadiaceae unclassified were revealed to be the distinctive functional bacteria, which could serve as the indicator of each state. The setting up of the typical feast-famine states could be regarded as the landmark to help the design, control and optimization of anammox process. The Songjianghe deposit is a newly discovered altered gold deposit in the southeastern Jiapigou-Haigou Gold Metallogenic Belt (JHGMB) in southeastern Jilin Province of NE China. The host rocks were considered to be the Mesoproterozoic Seluohe Group, and the metallogenic epoch lacked accurate isotopic constraints. To determine the age and metallogenic setting of the deposit, we describe the geologic characteristics of the deposit and present the results of petrographic and geochronologic analyses of the host rocks and ores. The ore bodies are hosted within a suite of amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks superimposed by greenschist facies indicative of retrograde metamorphism. Zircon U–Pb dating results indicate that the host rocks belong to the Jiapigou Group that formed at the end of the Neoarchean (2543–2527 Ma). Subsequently, the rocks successively underwent metamorphism during the late Neoarchean (2521–2506 Ma), retrograde metamorphism caused by the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean during the late Permian to Early Triassic (262–250 Ma), and extension after the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean during the Late Triassic (231–210 Ma). Sericite 40Ar/39Ar dating results suggest that the Songjianghe deposit formed during the Late Jurassic between 157 Ma and 156 Ma. By combining these new insights with those of previous studies, we propose that the Songjianghe deposit is a mesothermal gold deposit and that mineralization occurred during the extensional period in the intermittent stage that followed the first subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate. All the gold deposits in the JHGMB formed from the late Permian to Early Cretaceous by multi-stage mineralization events that corresponded temporally with the tectonic evolution of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and the episodic subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate.

We report the results of molecular screening in 121 patients with suspected hereditary optic neuropathies. The 34 primary and 9 secondary LHON mutations were screened in all the patients. In the familial cases, OPA1 was also tested when negative finding for the mtDNA mutations screening. Molecular defects were identified in 35 patients (28.9% of screened patients). Among these, 33 patients (94.3%) had an mtDNA mutation, including m.11778G > A (69.7%), m.14484 T > C, m.3460G > A, m.3635G > A, m.14502 T > C and three secondary mutations m.3316G > A, m.3394 T > C, m.3497C > T. Two novel OPA1 mutations, c.1301 T > G (p.Leu434Arg) and c.985-1G > A (IVS9-1G > A), were also detected in families with the evidence of father-to-son transmission. In conclusion, we reported the results of the molecular screening of 121 patients with hereditary optic neuropathies from southwest of China. Our results highlight the importance of investigating LHON-causing mtDNA mutations and OPA1 mutations in cases of suspected hereditary optic neuropathy.

The building sector is responsible for a major share of energy consumption, with the most energy being consumed during the operation stage of buildings. Energy-efficiency retrofit (EER) policies have been promoted by numerous countries. However, the effectiveness of these incentive policies has been insufficient, a main reason being the agency problem between the government and building owners. In addition, most policies ignored the diversity of buildings and building owners, resulting in a lack of reaction from owners. To address this problem, this study proposed an agent-based model for policy making on EER. The model defined the government and owners as agents and their decision-making behaviors were modeled with principal-agent theory. A platform based on the proposed model was then developed and the incentive policy was optimized under different circumstances. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed model, three policy scenarios were compared on the platform, which are the policy by the proposed model, the incentive policy in Shanghai and Shenzhen, China. The results showed that the incentive policy based on the proposed model has the best performance on energy savings, returns on investment, and leverage effects. A sensitivity analysis indicated that the government should pay more attention to energy price.

Introduction: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are commonly found in foods and are also natural intestinal inhabitants in humans and most animals. However, information regarding antimicrobial resistance and the transfer of resistance genes of LAB from fermented dairy products in China is limited. Methodology: In this study, LAB isolates (n = 82) of Lactobacillus (n = 43) and Streptococcus thermophilus (n = 39) were isolated from 51 commercial fermented food samples in China. All isolates were subjected to pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), antimicrobial susceptibility, detecting resistance genes, as well as investigating the transferability of resistance genes. Results: The 43 Lactobacillus isolates yielded 24 PFGE patterns and the 34 isolates of S. thermophilus generated 32 different PFGE patterns. Among the 43 Lactobacillus strains, the most commonly observed resistance was that to streptomycin (83.7%) and gentamycin (83.7%). Among the 39 S. thermophilus strains, the most frequently observed resistance was that to streptomycin (92.3%), gentamycin (87.2%), ciprofloxacin (79.5%), and chloramphenicol (71.8%), whereas the lowest level of resistance was that against erythromycin (7.7%). Antimicrobial resistance genes for erythromycin (emrB), gentamycin (aac(6')-aph(2")), streptomycin (ant(6)), sulfamethoxazole (sulI and sulII), tetracycline (tetM and tetS) were detected in the 18 resistance LAB strains. Conjugation experiments showed that tetM from L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus R6 and tetS from L. plantarum R41 were successfully transferred to L. monocytogenes by filter mating. Conclusions: LAB strains could potentially act as reservoirs of resistance genes and play an active role in the transfer of resistance to humans via the food chain.

BACKGROUND Metaplastic breast cancer (MBC) is a rare type of breast cancer, characterized histologically by the presence of two or more malignant cell types (epithelial and mesenchymal). This retrospective study aimed to review the imaging and histological features of MBC, with a review of the literature. MATERIAL AND METHODS Nineteen patients with MBC (age range, 28-75 years; mean, 55 years) underwent review of their clinical records, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and imaging findings, which included mammography, sonography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and diffusion restriction determined by the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and a time-intensity curve (TIC) for signal intensity. RESULTS The mammographic features of MBC were oval shaped (54.5%), with indistinct margin (45.5%), and high tumor density (72.7%), and on sonography, they were oval shaped (57.1%), with hypo-echogenic areas (85.8%). On MRI, MBC showed moderate hyper-intensity with a high signal intensity in the center of the tumor on T2WI (100%), an indistinct margin (75.0%), and rim enhancement (58.3%). Using a TIC, the early phase showed rapid enhancement, and the delay phase showed a signal plateau (91.7%). DWI showed diffusion restriction in all cases determined by the ADC. Immunohistochemistry showed negative expression of estrogen receptor (ER) (91.0%), progesterone receptor (PR) (81%), and HER2 (erbB-2) (80.0%). CONCLUSIONS Imaging features of MBC on mammography and ultrasound were benign. The use of T2WI MRI showed characteristic features of signal intensity using TIC curve and ADC analysis, which may support biopsy and histological analysis for definitive diagnosis.

Background. Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute vasculitis disease that commonly causes acquired heart disease in children. Coronary artery aneurysm (CAA) is a major complication of KD. However, the pathogenesis of KD remains unclear. The results of a genome-wide association study (GWAS) showed that two functional single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; rs699A>G and rs5050T>G) in the angiotensinogen (AGT) gene were related to cardiovascular disease susceptibility. The purpose of our study was to estimate the relationship between the two GWAS-identified AGT gene polymorphisms and the risk of CAA in Southern Chinese children with KD. Methods. We genotyped the two AGT gene polymorphisms (rs699A>G and rs5050T>G) in 760 KD cases and 972 healthy controls. We used the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to estimate the degree of the associations. Results. These two AGT gene polymorphisms were not associated with a risk of KD relative to the controls, but after adjusting for sex and age, the carriers of the rs5050G allele with TG/GG vs TT had an adjusted OR=1.56, 95% CI=1.01-2.41, and P=0.044 relative to the carriers of the rs5050TT genotype. The susceptibility to CAA was more predominant in KD patients younger than 12 months old. Conclusions. Our results indicate that the AGT gene polymorphism rs5050T>G may increase the risk of CAA in children with KD, especially those who are younger than 12 months. These results need to be verified by a validation study with a larger sample size.

Energy cooperation plays an important role in One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, which has attracted global attentions since it was firstly announced by China. However, studies focused on China-Myanmar energy cooperation under OBOR has not been explored yet, Myanmar usually acts as a geo-strategic link along OBOR while its power grid construction benefits from OBOR to a large extent. This paper aims to close this gap and provide a comprehensive analysis on China-Myanmar energy cooperation under OBOR. Current status of the two countries’ respective energy systems is investigated to show their motivations for cooperation. Then, SWOT analysis and PEST analysis are integrated to uncover the roots of the past or ongoing successful and unsuccessful energy projects, and to provide invaluable insights about opportunities and challenges caused by the most up-to-date global issues, including COVID-19 and U.S.-China trade war. Lastly, practical suggestions are given with respect to political, economical, social and technological domains, such that stakeholders, engineers, researchers and investors can adapt to the post-crisis era.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is an important environmental factor affecting human health. However, most studies on PM2.5 and health have used data from fixed monitoring sites to assess PM2.5 exposure, which may have introduced misleading information on the exposure-response relationship. We aimed to assess the effect of short-term personal PM2.5 exposure on lung function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. To achieve this, we conducted a longitudinal panel study among 37 COPD patients and 45 asthma patients from Beijing, China. The COPD group and the asthma group completed 148 and 180 lung function tests, respectively. We found that in COPD patients, for every 10-μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 exposure at lag2, the FEV1, FVC and DLco decreased by -0.014 L (95% CI -0.025, -0.003), -0.025 L (95% CI -0.050, -0.003) and -0.089 mmol/min/kPa (95% CI -0.156, -0.023), respectively. There was also a decrease of -0.023 L/s (95% CI -0.042, -0.003) and -0.017 L/s (95% CI -0.032, -0.002) in MMEF at lag3 and lag03, respectively. In the asthma group, every 10-μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 exposure led to a reduction of -0.012 L (95% CI -0.023, -0.001), -0.042 L (95% CI -0.081, -0.003) and -0.061 L/s (95% CI -0.116, -0.004) in the FEV1, FVC and PEF at lag3, respectively. Our findings suggest that PM2.5 exposure may primarily affect both airway function and lung diffusion function in COPD patients, and airway function in asthma patients.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in soil and crops caused by mining activities has become a prevalent concern in the world. Given that different crops have varying Cd bioaccumulation factors, crops with low Cd bioaccumulation abilities can be selected for the safe usage of Cd -contaminated lands. This study aimed to investigate Cd contamination in soil and crops and the influencing factors of soil Cd activity in a tin mining area (TMA) and control area (CA) and to put forward suggestions for the safe usage of farmlands by developing prediction models of Cd content in different crop grains. We collected 72 and 40 pairs of rice and maize grain samples, respectively, along with their rhizosphere soil samples and 6176 topsoil samples. The results showed that compared with the CA, the Cd pollution was more severe in the cultivated soil and crop grains around TMA. Furthermore, rice has a strong ability to transport Cd from soil to grains, whereas maize has a poor Cd uptake ability. The total organic carbon, CaO, pH, and Mn in soil play key roles in the transfer of Cd from soil to crop grains. Using these parameters and Cd concentration in soil, two sets of accurate Cd prediction models were developed for maize and rice. Based on the Cd concentration in the topsoil and predicted Cd concentration in crop grains, the safe utilization scheme of farmland was proposed. The proportions of priority protection, safe exploitation, planting adjustment, and strict control were 72.59%, 22.77%, 3.16%, and 1.48% in the TMA, respectively. The values reached 80.51% (priority protection), 19.12% (safe exploitation), 0.37% (planting adjustment), and 0% (strict control) in the CA. Thus, given the difference between Cd accumulation in rice and maize, adjustment of planting crops in contaminated farmlands can be applied to maximize the use of farmland resources.

Malanogaster are ectomycorrhizal fungi characterized by hypogeous fruitbodies. Many ITS rDNA sequences of Malanogaster are recovered from molecular surveys of fungal communities, and remain insufficiently identified making it difficult to determine whether these sequences represent conspecific or novel taxa. In this study, the ITS sequences of Malanogaster were collected comprehensively and analyzed within ITS-based phylogenetic framework. Twenty-one distinct phylogenetic species can be distinguished based on the ITS phylogeny and a threshold of 98% ITS sequence identity, and most species of Melanogaster showed more than 98.1% intraspecific ITS identity and less than 97.9% interspecific identity. Ten species were recognized from China, but combined morphology, nine of which were described and illustrated in this manuscript, including 4 new species (M. minobovatus nov. sp., M. panzhihuaensis nov. sp., M. quercus nov. sp. and M. tomentellus nov. sp.), 1 new combination (M. obvatus comb. & stat. nov.), and 4 known species (M. broomeanus, M. shanxiensis, M. spinisporus, M. subglobisporus). Significantly amendments were added to M. spinisporus and M. subglobisporus. M. fusisporus was added a new mature specimen from type location, and the description and exquisite illustrations were provided also. The diagnostic characteristics of the genus Melanogaster and a key to the Chinese species of the genus Melanogaster were provided. A 28 Sphylogeny was also conducted to confirm the phylogenetic locations of Chinese Melanogaster species and “Alpova trappei”, consistented with ITS analysis.
