The maritime airborne corner reflector (ACR) is a radar reflector that can measure wind speed in an unknown sea area in real time over a long distance. To improve our understanding of how the ACR works, we investigated the Doppler characteristics of the ACR for the first time from a dynamic perspective. First, we constructed a radar echo signal model of the ACR. Then, we obtained the dynamic Doppler characteristics through pulse Doppler processing and discussed the special phenomenon of Doppler broadening. Finally, we proposed a rectangular window decomposition method to analyze the inner principle of the Doppler broadening phenomenon in more detail. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the Doppler characterization of an ACR from a dynamic viewpoint, which contributes to enriching the basic theory of this equipment. Understanding the diurnal variation of horizontal wind in the atmospheric boundary layer is important for weather and climate research and wind energy applications. Here we analyze the hourly data from 91 wind profiler radar sites in China and observe that the power spectral density of horizontal wind in lower troposphere approximately follows the −5/3 power law in the mesoscale range over the ocean and coastal areas. However, in inland areas, the slopes of the power spectra are significantly greater than −5/3. We characterize the temporal and spatial variations of maximum wind speed and low level jets and find that the thermal wind effect may partially contribute to the high percentage of low‐level jets observed in the southeastern coast of China and Hainan Island. While the ERA5 reanalysis reproduces wind spectrum well for time scales >1 day, its spectrum diverges significantly from that of profiler data at shorter time scales. Plain Language Summary: Understanding how the horizontal wind changes throughout the day in the lower part of the atmosphere is important for studying weather and climate and using wind energy. In this study, we looked at data from 91 radar sites in China that measure wind every hour. We found that the pattern of how the wind changes follows a specific mathematical relationship, called a power law, where the wind decreases in a particular way with decreasing spatial and temporal scales. This pattern holds true mostly over the ocean and coastal areas, but in areas further inland, the wind behaves a bit differently. We also studied how the low‐level jet (LLJ), which are fast winds at low altitudes, change over time and space. We discovered that the difference in temperature across the region contributes to the occurrence of these LLJs in coastal areas in southeast China and Hainan Island. Finally, we compare our findings with the ERA5 reanalysis, which demonstrates excellent agreement in reproducing the wind spectrum for time scales greater than 1 day. However, the spectrum derived from the ERA5 reanalysis diverges significantly from the profiler data at shorter time scales. Gravity wave (GW) activities play a prominent role in the complex coupling process of wave–wave and wave–background circulation around mid-low-latitude and equatorial areas. The wavelengths are wide, from about 10 m to 100 km, with a period from minutes to hours. However, the oscillations of GW activities are apparently different between the period bands of 0.1 to 1 h (HF) and 1 to 5 h (LF). To further understand the characteristics of GW activities, the neutral winds during 2008–2009 with a resolution of 3 min obtained from a medium-frequency (MF) radar in Kunming (25.6° N, 103.8° E) were analyzed. Using two numerical filters, the HF and LF GWs were estimated. Interestingly, the power spectral density grows larger as the frequency increases. It linearly falls with decreasing frequency when the period is less than 2 h. The seasonal variations in both HF and LF GWs are strongly demonstrated in August–September, November, and February–March with maximum meridional variances of 1100 m2 s−2 and 500 m2 s−2 and maximum zonal variances of 800 m2 s−2 and 350 m2 s−2 in, respectively. The turbulent velocity was also calculated and shows similar oscillations with GW activities. While many studies have been conducted regarding wind-driven Ka-band scattering on the ocean and sea surfaces, few have identified the impacts of Ka-band scattering on small inland water bodies, and fewer have identified the influence of wind on coherence over water. These previous studies have been limited in spatial scale, covering only large water bodies >25 km2. The recently launched Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is the first Ka-band InSAR satellite designed for mapping water surface elevations and open water areas for rivers as narrow as 100 m and lakes as small as 0.0625 km2. Because measurements of these types are novel, there remains some uncertainty about expected backscatter amplitudes given wind-driven water surface roughness variability. A previous study using the airborne complement to SWOT, AirSWOT, found that low backscatter and low coherence values were indicative of higher errors in the water surface elevation products, recommending minimum thresholds for backscatter and coherence for filtering the data to increase the accuracy of averaged data for lakes and rivers. We determined that the global average wind speed over lakes is 4 m/s, and after comparing AirSWOT backscatter and coherence data with ERA-5 wind speeds, we found that the minimum required speed to retrieve high backscatter and coherence is 3 m/s. We examined 11,072 lakes across Canada and Alaska, with sizes ranging from 350 m2 to 156 km2, significantly smaller than what could be measured with previous Ka-band instruments in orbit. We found that small lakes (0.0625–0.25 km2) have significantly lower backscatter (3–5 dB) and 0.20–0.25 lower coherence than larger lakes (>1 km2). These results suggest that approximately 75% of SWOT observable lake areas around the globe will have consistently high-accuracy water surface elevations, though seasonal wind variability should remain an important consideration. Despite very small lakes presenting lower average backscatter and coherence, this study asserts that SWOT will be able to accurately resolve the water surface elevations and water surface extents for significantly smaller water bodies than have been previously recorded from satellite altimeters. This study additionally lays the foundation for future high-resolution inland water wind speed studies using SWOT data, when the data become available, as the relationships between wind speed and Ka-band backscatter reflect those of traditional scatterometers designed for oceanic studies. Convective wind gusts (CGs) are usually related to thunderstorms, and they may cause great structural damage and serious hazards, such as train derailment, service interruption, and building collapse. Due to the small-scale and nonstationary nature of CGs, reliable CG nowcasting with high spatial and temporal resolutions has remained unattainable. In this study, a novel nowcasting model based on deep learning – namely, CGsNet – is developed for 0–2 h lead times of quantitative CG nowcasting, achieving minute–kilometer-level forecasts. CGsNet is a physics-constrained model established by training on large corpora of average surface wind speed (ASWS) and radar observations; it can produce realistic and spatiotemporally consistent ASWS predictions in CG events. By combining the gust factor (1.77, the ratio of the observed peak wind gust speed (PWGS) to the ASWS) with the ASWS predictions, the PWGS forecasts are estimated with a spatial resolution of 0.01 ∘ × 0.01 ∘ and a 6 min temporal resolution. CGsNet is shown to be effective, and it has an essential advantage in learning the spatiotemporal features of CGs. In addition, quantitative evaluation experiments indicate that CGsNet exhibits higher generalization performance for CGs than the traditional nowcasting method based on numerical weather prediction models. Reflected waves have been frequently observed via weather radar, even during sunny, cloudless days. Additionally, it is recognized that turbulence and biological scatterers can also dominate the scattering process. In previous studies, echo returns of turbulence from clear-air Bragg scattering (CABS) have been used to detect the height of the convective boundary layer (CBL). However, in a dual-frequency antenna multiplexing radar system, through which the dual-wavelength ratio (DWR) identifies the CABS clearly, CABS can be unexpectedly observed not only at the edge of the CBL but also above the CBL, highlighting the need for an expanded set of causes of clear-air echoes. It was further identified that the negative second derivative of horizontal wind speed, which is measured by a coherent Doppler Lidar, is consistent with the variation of the CABS layers' height above the CBL. These results emphasize the presence of physical processes leading to turbulence in the troposphere, with implications for Bragg scattering studies and the theory of turbulence in general. Knowledge of the ocean backscatter at various azimuth angles is critical to the radar detection of the ocean environment. In this study, the modified two-scale model (TSM), which introduces a correction term in the conventional TSM, is improved based on the empirical model, CMOD5.n. Then, the influences of different directional wave spectra on the prediction of azimuthal behavior of ocean radar backscatter are investigated by comparing the simulated results with CMOD5.n and the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) measurements. The results show that the overall performance of the single spectra of D, A, E, and H18 and the composite spectra of AH18 and AEH18 in predicting ocean backscatter are different at different wind speeds and incidence angles. Generally, the AH18 spectrum has better performance at low and moderate wind speeds, while the A spectrum works better at high wind speed. Nevertheless, the wave spectra have little effect on the prediction of the azimuthal fluctuation of scattering, which is highly dependent on the directional spreading function. The relative patterns of azimuthal undulation produced by different spreading functions are rather different at different wind speeds, but similar under different incidence angles. Airborne scatterometer capability depends on not only the device's technical characteristics but also the scheme used for surface observations. Typically, a rotating-beam scatterometer uses a circular scheme for sampling normalized radar cross-sections (NRCS) at wind measurements over the sea. Here, we investigate wind retrieval using an updated semicircular scheme, providing the NRCS sampling at various combinations of incidence angles within the range 30° to 60°. The effectiveness of the wind retrieval using our semicircular sampling scheme was evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations, and we then developed corresponding wind algorithms that used a geophysical model function (GMF). As a result of the study, we found that a semicircular sampling scheme is well suited for wind retrieval over the sea using a rotating-beam scatterometer. We showed that a semicircular scheme can provide wind retrieval accuracies similar to those achievable with a conventional circular scheme, although the semicircular scheme requires approximately three times the number of NRCS samples integrated in each azimuth sector. Most importantly, however, the semicircular scheme enabled a maximum altitude for wind retrieval of twice the height possible with a circular scheme. In this study, we also demonstrate that the wind speed accuracy tends to increase with an increase in the incidence angle and similarly for the wind direction accuracy. Nonetheless, we then show that the simultaneous use of the NRCS sampling scheme at several incidence angles can increase the wind retrieval accuracy, especially when three or four incidence angles are used. The obtained results can be used to enhance airborne scatterometers and multimode radars operated in a scatterometer mode, including airborne high-altitude conical scanning radars, and can be applied to new remote sensing systems' development. The paper is devoted to the problem of estimating marine current velocity from microwave radar data, one of the important tasks of sea remote sensing. We present some results of simultaneous measurements of radar scatterers velocities and sea current and wind velocities. Radar scatterers velocities were measured using a dual-polarized (VV/HH) Doppler radar operating in S/C/X bands. The experiments were carried out in the coastal zone of the Black Sea at moderate incidence angles (30–70 degrees). It was obtained that the subsurface current velocity (current in the upper layer of ten centimeters) retrieved from the Bragg component of the radar return can be used to estimate changes in marine current (a part of the sea current that is not related to the wind) at constant wind speed. The subsurface current velocity is found as a vector sum of the current velocity measured at a depth of 1 m and the wind component equal to 1–3% of the wind speed. The Doppler shift of microwave radar sea surface echoes serves as the foundation for sea surface current field retrieval; it includes the shift caused by satellite platform motion, ocean waves, and sea surface currents. The Doppler shift caused by ocean waves is known as the wave-induced Doppler velocity (UWD), and its removal is critical for the accurate retrieval of sea surface current fields. The low-incidence Ka-band real-aperture radar rotary scan regime has the capability of directly observing wide-swath two-dimensional current fields, but as a new regime to be further explored and validated, simulation and analysis of UWD in this regime have a significant influence on the hardware design and currently observed applications of this satellite system in its conceptual stage. In this study, we simulated and investigated the impacts of radar parameters and sea-state conditions on the UWD obtained from small-incidence-angle Ka-band rotational scanning radar data and verified the simulation results with the classical analytical solution of average specular scattering point velocity. Simulation results indicate that the change in the azimuth direction of platform observation affects UWD accuracy. Accuracy is the lowest when the antenna is in a vertical side-view. The UWD increases slowly with the incidence angle. Ocean waves are insensitive to polarization in the case of small-incidence-angle specular scattering. The increase in wind speed and the development of wind waves result in a substantial increase in UWD. We classified swell by wavelength and wave height and found that UWD increases with swell size, especially the contribution of swell height to UWD, which is more significant. The contribution of the swell to UWD is smaller than that of wind waves to UWD. Furthermore, the existence of sea surface currents changes the contribution of ocean waves to UWD, and the contribution weakens with increasing wind speed and increases with wind wave development. Unfrozen free and non-free water between ice crystals in flat and hummock ice in the Yellow River exists as water films with varying contents based on ice temperature. These contents can affect the radar wave velocity of the ice despite its theoretical dependence on the crystal structure and ice body components. The unfrozen water content in ice depends on the ice temperature, which is controlled by the air temperature, solar radiation, and ice thickness. Winter air temperature and radar-detected ice thickness data observed at the Shisifenzi bend in the Yellow River from 2020 to 2021 were analyzed. The unfrozen water content in the ice was the primary factor influencing the accuracy of flat ice thickness detection. The heat flux at the ice–water interface in the Yellow River was determined. The evolution of ice thickness and temperature were simulated using a one-dimensional (1D) ice thermodynamic model forced by the local weather station data (i.e., air temperature, solar radiation, wind speed, and cloud cover). On this basis, the measured ice thickness data of 13 drill holes were combined to calculate 1251 thermodynamically simulated ice thicknesses consistent with the ice thickness detection time of the radar; therefore, statistical relationships regarding the influence of air temperature and the combined action of air temperature and ice thickness on the radar wave velocity in granular and columnar ice during air temperature increases and decreases were determined. Finally, the statistical relationship between the combined influence of air temperature and ice thickness on radar wave velocity was selected as a parameterization scheme to dynamically correct the radar wave velocity of flat ice. To enhance the radar detection accuracy for flat ice thickness, the radar wave velocity of ice was parameterized as a function. Given the presence of unfrozen frazil ice and accumulated broken ice blocks in the Yellow River, radar is suggested to detect the thickness of different types of ice in future research. Three ground-based radars in the Pearl River Delta successfully observed Typhoon Higos (2020), which traveled over the offshore area in the South China Sea. During the observation period, the stratiform region of the outer rainband of HIGOS became active while swirling inward, merging into an unclosed eyewall and spreading outward, but its structure was asymmetric between upwind and downwind. To understand the dynamic mechanism of the asymmetry of the stratiform region in detail, the refined wind speed distributions in the inner core of Higos was retrieved by using the radar observation data and a three-dimensional, variational, direct, data assimilation, Dual-Doppler analysis (DDA). In addition, an Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) was conducted with the numerical simulations by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and numerical emulations by Cloud Resolving Model Radar SIMulator (CR-SIM) software to validate the retrieved data. From the OSSE, the emulated retrieved data were comparable with the WRF-out data. The analysis shows that the dynamic mechanisms are different between upwind and downwind in the stratiform rainband. In the former, the inflow sinks in the middle troposphere. In addition, there is an inflow in the lower troposphere, with an outflow aloft the inflow. In the latter, however, the stratiform rainband is primarily influenced by outflow from inside the rainband and inflow from outside the monsoon-related southwesterly winds. The vertical velocity characteristics in the stratiform rainband downwind also differ from those upwind. The upwind updraft was distinct in the middle troposphere, whereas the downwind updraft was caused by the convergence of the outflow from inside the stratiform rainband and the monsoon-related southwesterly inflow in the lower troposphere. This paper introduces an experimental setup for retrieving horizontal wind speed and direction profiles with a high temporal and vertical resolution for process studies and validation of convection-permitting model simulations. The CMTRACE (tracing convective momentum transport in complex cloudy atmospheres) campaign used collocated wind lidar and cloud radar measurements to retrieve seamless wind profiles from near the surface up to cloud tops. It took place in Cabauw, the Netherlands, between 13 September and 3 October 2021. The intermediate processing steps for generating the level 1 and level 2 data, such as second trip echoes filtering, offset correction, wind retrieval, re-gridding, and flagging, are described. In level 1 (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6926483 ,), the data from lidar and radars are kept in the original spatial and temporal resolution, while in level 2 (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6926605 ,), they are regridded to a common spatial and temporal resolution. Statistical analyses of the lidar's and radar's wind speed and direction profiles indicate a correlation higher than 0.95 for both variables. The bias of wind direction and speed calculated between radar's and lidar's observations are 0.24 ∘ and -0.16 ms-1 , respectively. The foreseen initial application of the datasets includes the study of convective momentum transport and its validation in regional weather forecasts and large-eddy simulation hindcasts. This study elaborates on how aircraft-based horizontal geometries of trade wind cumulus clouds differ whether a one-dimensional (1D) profiler or a two-dimensional (2D) imager is used. While nadir profiling devices are limited to a 1D realization of the cloud transect size, with limited representativeness of horizontal cloud extension, 2D imagers enhance our perspectives by mapping the horizontal cloud field. Both require high resolutions to detect the lower end of the cloud size spectrum. In this regard, the payload aboard the HALO (High Altitude and LOng Range Research Aircraft) achieves a comparison and also a synergy of both measurement systems. Using the NARVAL II (Next-Generation Aircraft Remote-Sensing for Validation Studies) campaign, we combine HALO observations from a 35.2 GHz cloud and precipitation radar (1D) and from the hyperspectral 2D imager specMACS (Munich Aerosol Cloud Scanner), with a 30 times higher along-track resolution, and compare their cloud masks. We examine cloud size distributions in terms of sensitivity to sample size, resolution and the considered field of view (2D or 1D). This specifies impacts on horizontal cloud sizes derived from the across-track perspective of the high-resolution imager in comparison to the radar curtain. We assess whether and how the trade wind field amplifies uncertainties in cloud geometry observations along 1D transects through directional cloud elongation. Our findings reveal that each additional dimension, no matter of the device, causes a significant increase in observed clouds. The across-track field yields the highest increase in the cloud sample. The radar encounters difficulties in characterizing the trade wind cumuli size distribution. More than 60 % of clouds are subgrid scale for the radar. The radar has issues in the representation of clouds shorter than 200 m, as they are either unresolved or are incorrectly displayed as single grid points. Very shallow clouds can also remain unresolved due to too low radar sensitivity. Both facts deteriorate the cloud size distribution significantly at this scale. Double power law characteristics in the imager-based cloud size distribution do not occur in radar observations. Along-track measurements do not necessarily cover the predominant cloud extent and inferred geometries' lack of representativeness. Trade wind cumuli show horizontal patterns similar to ellipses, with a mean aspect ratio of 3:2 and having tendencies of stronger elongation with increasing cloud size. Instead of circular cloud shape estimations based on the 1D transect, elliptic fits maintain the cloud area size distribution. Increasing wind speed tends to stretch clouds more and tilts them into the wind field, which makes transect measurements more representative along this axis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the grounded‐based Ka‐band millimetre‐wave cloud radar (MMCR) is used to analyse the cloud characteristics over the western Tianshan mountains. The cloud top height (CTH) obtained by MMCR is verified by comparing it with the Fengyun‐4A (FY‐4A) observations. Overall, the MMCR‐obtained CTHs are attenuated and lower than the FY‐4A‐obtained CTHs under precipitation conditions. Thus, the FY‐4A data is used to complement MMCR data when there is rainfall. The diurnal, seasonal variation and vertical structures of the cloud are further examined using the combination of MMCR and FY‐4A. The result indicates that the CTH and cloud base height (CBH) are highest in summer and lowest in winter. Also, clouds tend to form frequently at night in spring, summer, and winter. Although in autumn, clouds tend to form most frequently in the morning. This may be related to the diurnal variation of temperature, humidity, wind speed, and wind direction. Moreover, the CTHs occur most frequently at heights of 8–9 km in spring and autumn, 9–10 km in summer, and 7–8 km in winter. The high CTHs caused by the strong convective activities in summer may be related to sufficient water vapour transport. These corrected CTH data are also used to classify cloud types, the results indicate that the proportion of high clouds is highest in summer, while the proportion of medium clouds is lower than in the other three seasons. Residual current characteristics are indicators for the net transports of sediments, nutrients, and pollutants, and for the dilution and diffusion of soluble substances in coastal areas, yet their driving mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we studied the characteristics of surface residual currents along the west coast of the island of Ireland, as well as the response mechanisms to wind at a seasonal scale based on the continuous observation data of high-frequency radar (HFR) for one year. Our analyses indicate that wind has a significant effect on generating surface residual currents, with correlation coefficients of 0.6–0.8 between wind speeds and residual current speeds at both annual and seasonal scales. However, the correlation between the directions of residual currents and the wind was not as significant as speed, likely because the directions of residual currents were not only affected by sea surface wind, but also by land boundary conditions in the research area. Moreover, the residual currents had a significant eastward flow trend identical to the wind direction at the maximum wind speed time, during which the effect of the tide on residual currents was relatively weak. Additionally, when compared with wind fields, HFR surface flow fields and surface residual current fields show that wind is the dominant driver of the variations of surface and residual flow fields. These findings shed light on coastal ecological and environmental management and can assist in the prevention and mitigation of marine disasters, by providing helpful information for improving the ability and accuracy of forecasting coastal currents. Wind wave-induced artifact surface velocity (WASV) is an important component of the sea surface motions detected by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. Understanding the characteristics of the interference of WASV on SAR current velocity estimates is necessary to improve the accuracy of retrievals. In this study, we assessed and analyzed the sensitivity of WASV in C-band along-track interferometric (ATI) SAR to radar configuration, wind field, swell field, and a wave spectrum model. Results showed that the influence of wind speed on WASV increased with the current velocity. The swell also affected WASV, especially at higher wind speeds; WASV was more strongly influenced by swell amplitude than by swell wavelength. In terms of radar configurations, results showed that VV polarization was more suitable than HH polarization in the estimation of WASV. The interference of WASV was minimal at moderate incidence angles (around 40°), and an appropriate ATI baseline selection was also given. The WASV was more strongly influenced by sea states than by the wave spectrum model or by a spreading function. The findings of this study improve our understanding of WASV and provide a reference for the design of future ATI SAR current measurement instruments and projects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The WIVERN (WInd VElocity Radar Nephoscope) mission, now in Phase 0 of the ESA Earth Explorer program, promises to complement Doppler wind lidar by globally observing, for the first time, the vertical profiles of winds in cloudy areas. This work describes an initial assessment of the performances of the WIVERN conically scanning 94 GHz Doppler radar, the only payload of the mission. The analysis is based on an end-to-end simulator characterized by the following novel features tailored to the WIVERN radar: the conically scanning geometry, the inclusion of cross-polarization effects and the simulation of a radiometric mode, the applicability to global cloud model outputs via an orbital model, the incorporation of a mispointing model accounting for thermoelastic distortions, microvibrations, star-tracker uncertainties, etc., and the inclusion of the surface clutter. Some of the simulator capabilities are showcased for a case study involving a full rotational scan of the instrument. Preliminary findings show that mispointing errors associated with the antenna's azimuthal mispointing are expected to be lower than 0.3 m s -1 (and strongly dependent on the antenna's azimuthal scanning angle), wind shear and non-uniform beam-filling errors have generally negligible biases when full antenna revolutions are considered, non-uniform beam filling causes random errors strongly dependent on the antenna azimuthal scanning angle, but typically lower than 1 m s -1 , and cross-talk effects are easily predictable so that areas affected by strong cross-talk noise can be flagged. Overall, the quality of the Doppler velocities appears to strongly depend on several factors, such as the strength of the cloud reflectivity, the antenna-pointing direction relative to the satellite motion, the presence of strong reflectivity and/or wind gradients, and the strength of the surface clutter. The end-to-end simulations suggest that total wind errors meet the mission requirements in a good portion of the clouds detected by the WIVERN radar. The simulator will be used for studying tradeoffs for the different WIVERN configurations under consideration during Phase 0 (e.g., different antenna sizes, pulse lengths, and antenna patterns). The sea clutter model based on the physical sea surface can simulate radar echo at different times and positions and is more suitable for describing dynamic sea clutter than the traditional models based on statistical significance. However, when applying the physical surface model to shore-based radar, the effects of wave nonlinearity, breaking wave, shadow, and radar footprint size must be considered. In this paper, a dynamic sea clutter simulation scheme based on a nonlinear wave is proposed that uses random Stokes waves instead of linear superposition waves to simulate the nonlinear dynamic sea surface and then calculates echo in the form of scattering cells. In this process, the relationship between wind speed and the nonlinear factor of the Stokes wave is derived, a simple model of shadow modulation is provided, and a method for appending the sea clutter spikes formed by breaking waves is developed. The experimental results show that the simulated sea clutter and the real measured clutter have good consistency in intensity, amplitude statistical distribution, Doppler spectrum, and spatiotemporal correlation. The proposed scheme is suitable for the sea clutter simulation of shore-based radar and can also adjust the relevant parameters to extend to other types of sea clutter simulation. This article proposes an accurate clutter synthesis method for a dynamic radar under various environmental conditions. Previous clutter synthesis methods mostly rely on empirical clutter models fitting the measurement results obtained from the limited conditions of observations. Inherently, these models have difficulties synthesizing clutter for unexplored environments and operational conditions. The method presented in this article overcomes this limitation by creating and summing the clutter patch by patch. The clutters of individual patches are synthesized by the clutter model corresponding to each patch's specific conditions, such as the grazing angle, ground texture, and wind velocity. It enables one to synthesize clutter signals under various observation scenarios accurately. For example, this work demonstrates the synthesis of clutter signals from heterogeneous textures for an aircraft radar on a mission. Also, the clutter signals for a monopulse radar are synthesized and included in the radar simulation to evaluate the performance of a detection algorithm. Potentially, this method can be utilized to design a robust radar algorithm against the clutter environment of interests. For a given condition of measurement, it is shown that the synthesized clutters agree well with the actual measured data in their statistical characteristics. The optimization of normalized radar cross-section (NRCS) sampling by a scatterometer allows an increase in the accuracy of the wind retrieval over the water surface and a decrease in the time of the measurement. Here, we investigate the possibility of improving wind vector measurement with an airborne rotating-beam scatterometer mounted under the fuselage. For this purpose, we investigated NRCS sampling at various incidence angles, and the possibility of using NRCS samples obtained during simultaneous measurement at different incidence angles to perform wind retrieval. The proposed wind algorithms are based on a geophysical model function (GMF). Sea wind retrieval was carried out using Monte Carlo simulations with consideration of a single incidence angle or combinations of several incidence angles. The incidence angles of interest were 30°, 35°, 40°, 45°, 50°, 55°, and 60°. The simulation showed that the wind speed error decreased with an increase in the incidence angle, and the wind direction error tended to decrease with an increase in the incidence angle. The single incidence angle case is characterized by higher maximum wind retrieval errors but allows for a higher maximum altitude of the wind retrieval method's applicability to be achieved. The use of several neighboring incidence angles allows a better wind vector retrieval accuracy to be achieved. The combinations of three and four incidence angles provided the lowest maximum wind speed and direction errors in the range of the incidence angles from 45° to 60° but, unfortunately, provide the lowest maximum altitude of applicability of the wind retrieval method. At the same time, the combination of two incidence angles is characterized by slightly higher maximum wind retrieval errors than in the cases of three and four incidence angles, but they are lower than in the case of the single incidence angle. Moreover, the two incidence angles' combination is a simpler way to decrease the wind retrieval errors, especially for measurement near an incidence angle of 30°, providing nearly the highest maximum altitude of the wind retrieval method applicability. HF radars are now an important part of operational coastal observing systems where they are used primarily for measuring surface currents. Their use for wave and wind direction measurement has also been demonstrated. These measurements are based on physical models of radar backscatter from the ocean surface described in terms of its ocean wave directional spectrum and the influence thereon of the surface current. Although this spectrum contains information about the local wind that is generating the wind sea part of the spectrum, it also includes spectral components propagating into the local area having been generated by winds away from the area i.e., swell. In addition, the relationship between the local wind sea and wind speed depends on fetch and duration. Thus, finding a physical model to extract wind speed from the radar signal is not straightforward. In this paper, methods that have been proposed to date will be briefly reviewed and an alternative approach is developed using machine learning methods. These have been applied to three different data sets using different radar systems in different locations. Wind profile radar systems require antennas with multiple radiation beams for detecting wind velocity, as well as with a low sidelobe and dual polarization for enhancing the sensitivity for the weak signal reflected from the turbulence. This paper proposes a lens antenna operating at 24 GHz with four reconfigurable beams for wind profile radars. This lens antenna includes 2 × 2 corrugated horn antennas for radiating 24 GHz waves in two polarizations, and the dielectric lens for modulating four radiation beams with a high gain and low sidelobe. Experiments demonstrate that this lens antenna can realize reconfigurable beams with deflections of ±15° in dual polarizations, meanwhile with the gain of 30.58 dBi and the sidelobe of −20 dB. The interferometric imaging radar altimeter (InIRA) adopts a short baseline along with small incidence angles to acquire interferometric signals from the sea surface with high accuracy, thus the wide-swath sea surface height (SSH) and backscattering coefficient ( σ 0 ) can be obtained simultaneously. This work presents an approach to jointly retrieve the wind speed and significant wave height (SWH) for the Chinese Tiangong-2 interferometric imaging radar altimeter (TG2-InIRA). This approach utilizes a multilayer perceptron (MLP) joint retrieval model based on σ 0 and SSH data. By comparing with the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis data, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the retrieved wind speed and the SWH are 1.27 m/s and 0.36 m, respectively. Based on the retrieved SWH, two enhanced wind speed retrieval models are developed for high sea states and low sea states, respectively. The results show that the RMSE of the retrieved wind speed is 1.12 m/s when the SWHs < 4 m; the RMSE is 0.73 m/s when the SWHs ≥ 4 m. Similarly, two enhanced SWH retrieval models for relatively larger and relatively smaller wind speed regions are developed based on the retrieved wind speed with corresponding RMSEs of 0.19 m and 0.16 m, respectively. The comparison between the retrieved results and the buoy data shows that they are highly consistent. The results show that the additional information of SWH can be used to improve the accuracy of wind speed retrieval at small incidence angles, and also the additional information of wind speed can be used to improve the SWH retrieval. The stronger the correlation between wind speed and SWH, the greater the improvement of the retrieved results. A multifunctional scatterometer system and optimized radar signal processing for simultaneous observation of various physical oceanographic parameters are described in this paper. Existing observation methods with microwave remote sensing techniques generally use several separate systems such as scatterometer, altimeter, and Doppler radar for sea surface monitoring, which are inefficient in system operation and cross-analysis of each observation data. To improve this point, we integrated separate measurement functions into a single observation system by adding a measurement function of Doppler frequency to the existing system. So it enables to simultaneously measure the range and polarimetric responses of backscattering as well as movements of the sea surface. Here, the simultaneous measurement function of Doppler frequency was implemented by sampling an FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) radar signal as 2D raw data consisting of fast- and slow-time samples, i.e., the range and backscattering of radar target signals are analyzed from the fast-time samples while the Doppler frequency by the radar target's movement extracts from the slow-time samples. Through the Fourier transformed-based range-Doppler signal process, distance (R), backscattering (σ°), and Doppler frequency (fD) are sequentially extracted from the 2D raw data, and a correlation to the physical oceanographic parameters is analyzed. Operability of the proposed system was examed through total 3 times of field campaigns from June 2017 to August 2020 and the observation data retrieved by the radar measurement data (R, σ°, fD) was also cross-analyzed with in-situ data: e.g., tide, significant wave height, and wind speed and direction. Differences in the comparative results as an observational accuracy are as follows. This is the first presentation of quasi-synchronous spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) high-resolution images acquired from C-band Radar Constellation Mission (RCM) and RADARSAT-2 consisting of quad-polarization (HH + HV + VH + VV) wide-swath observations of Hurricane Epsilon. These measurements clearly show that the denoised HV- and VH-polarized normalized radar cross sections (NRCSs) have great consistency. NRCS values at HV- and VH-polarizations are more sensitive to wind speeds and less sensitive to incidence angles or wind directions than those at HH and VV for hurricane force winds. For large incidence angles and high wind speeds, the sensitivity of HH-polarized NRCS to wind speed is higher than that of VV. HH- and VV-polarized NRCSs gradually lose wind direction dependency at high winds. It is notable that the time interval between the two SAR acquisitions is only 3 min. This allows for a direct comparison of HV- and VH-polarized images to investigate the variations in high-resolution backscattering within the hurricane vortex, thereby revealing the most dynamical areas. An asymmetric dynamic is observed around the eye of Hurricane Epsilon, based on positive and negative differences (VH–HV) in the western and eastern parts of the eye. The impacts of rain on quad-polarized NRCS are also examined using collocated rain rates from the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) and wind speeds from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP). Significant rain-induced NRCS attenuations are about 1.7 dB for HH and VV, and 2.2 dB for HV and VH, when the rain rate is 20 mm/h. These attenuations are associated with rain-induced turbulence and atmospheric absorption. This work shows that the collocated RCM and RADARSAT-2 hurricane observations provide a unique analysis of synoptic and joint C-band measurements of the ocean surface in quad-polarization; this is noteworthy in view of preparations for the next generation of dual-polarization scatterometer (SCA) onboard second-generation meteorological operational satellite program (MetOp-SG). In this study, sea surface wind speed was retrieved using the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) Ka-band data. In order to establish the Ka-band model at low incidence angles, the dependence of the DPR Ka-band normalized radar cross section (NRCS) on the wind speed, incidence angle, sea surface temperature (SST), significant wave height (SWH), and sea surface current speed (CSPD) was analyzed first. We confirmed that the normalized radar cross section depends on the wind speed, incidence angle, and SST. Second, an empirical model at low incidence angles was established. This model links the Ka-band NRCS to the incidence angle, wind speed, and SST. Additionally, the wind speed was retrieved by the model and was validated via the GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) wind product. The validation yielded a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.45 m/s and the RMSE was better at a lower incidence angle and a higher SST. This model may expand the use of GPM DPR data in enriching the sea surface wind speed data set. For nearly three decades, satellite nadir altimeters have provided essential information to understand primarily ocean but also inland water dynamics. A variety of parameters can be inferred via altimeter measurements, including sea surface height, sea surface wind speeds, significant wave heights, and topography of land, sea ice, and ice sheets. Taking advantage of these parameters with the long record of altimeter data spanning multiple decades has allowed a diverse range of societal applications. As the constellation of altimeter satellites grows, the proven value of the missions to a diverse user community can now be demonstrated by highlighting a selection of verifiable success stories. In this paper, we review selected altimeter success stories that incorporate altimetry data, alone or in conjunction with numerical models or other Earth observations, to solve a key societal problem. First, we define the problem or the key challenge of each use case, and then we articulate the uptake of the successful altimeter-based solution. Our review revealed steady progress by scientific and stakeholder communities in bridging the gap between data availability and their actual uptake to address a variety of applications. Highlighting these altimeter-based success stories can serve to further promote the widespread adoption of future satellite missions such as the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission scheduled for launch in 2022. Knowledge of the breadth of current utility of altimeter observations can help the scientific community to demonstrate the value in continuing radar altimeter and similar missions, particularly those with expanded capabilities, such as SWOT. The WIVERN (WInd VElocity Radar Nephoscope) mission, soon entering in Phase-0 of the ESA Earth Explorer program, promises to complement Doppler wind lidar by globally observing, for the first time, vertical profiles of winds in cloudy areas. This work describes an end to end simulator of the WIVERN conically scanning 94 GHz Doppler radar, the only payload of the mission. Specific features of the simulator are: the conically scanning geometry; the inclusion of cross-polarization effects and of the simulation of a radiometric mode; the applicability to global cloud model outputs via an orbital model; the incorporation of a mispointing model accounting for thermo-elastic distortions, microvibrations, star-trackers uncertainties, etc.; the inclusion of the surface clutter. This study elaborates how aircraft-based horizontal geometries of trade-wind cumulus clouds differ whether a one-dimensional (1D) profiler or a two-dimensional (2D) imager is used. While nadir profiling devices are limited to 1D realisation of the cloud transect size with limited representativeness of horizontal cloud extension, 2D imagers enhance our perspectives by mapping the horizontal cloud field. Both require high-resolution to detect the lower end of the cloud size spectrum. In this regard, the payload aboard the High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO) achieves a comparison and also a synergy of both measurement systems. Using the NARVAL-II campaign, we combine HALO observations from a 35.2 GHz cloud and precipitation radar (1D) and from the hyperspectral 2D imager specMACS, having a 30 times higher along-track resolution and compare their cloud masks. We examine cloud size distributions in terms of sensitivity to sample size, resolution and the considered field of view (2D or 1D). This specifies impacts on horizontal cloud sizes derived from the across-track perspective of the high-resolution imager in comparison to the radar curtain. We assess whether and how the trade-wind field amplifies uncertainties in cloud geometry observations along 1D transects through directional cloud elongation. Our findings reveal that each additional dimension, no matter of the device, causes a significant increase of observed clouds. The across-track field yields the highest increase in the cloud sample. The radar encounters difficulties to characterize the trade-wind cumuli size distribution. More than 60 % of clouds are subgrid scale for the radar. While the radar cannot resolve clouds shorter than 200 m and has a lower sensitivity, the amount of small invisible clouds leads to deviations in the size distribution. Double power law characteristics in the imager based cloud size distribution do not occur in radar observations. Along-track measurements do not necessarily cover the predominant cloud extent and inferred geometries lack of representativeness. Trade-wind cumuli show horizontal patterns similar to ellipses with a mean aspect ratio of 3: 2. Instead of circular estimations based on the 1D transect, elliptic fits maintain the cloud area size distribution. Increasing wind speed tends to stretch clouds more and tilts them into the wind field, which makes transect measurements more representative along this axis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mesoscale dynamics in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region have been difficult to study from either ground- or satellite-based observations. For understanding of atmospheric coupling processes, important spatial scales at these altitudes range between tens and hundreds of kilometers in the horizontal plane. To date, this scale size is challenging observationally, so structures are usually parameterized in global circulation models. The advent of multistatic specular meteor radar networks allows exploration of MLT mesoscale dynamics on these scales using an increased number of detections and a diversity of viewing angles inherent to multistatic networks. In this work, we introduce a four-dimensional wind field inversion method that makes use of Gaussian process regression (GPR), which is a nonparametric and Bayesian approach. The method takes measured projected wind velocities and prior distributions of the wind velocity as a function of space and time, specified by the user or estimated from the data, and produces posterior distributions for the wind velocity. Computation of the predictive posterior distribution is performed on sampled points of interest and is not necessarily regularly sampled. The main benefits of the GPR method include this non-gridded sampling, the built-in statistical uncertainty estimates, and the ability to horizontally resolve winds on relatively small scales. The performance of the GPR implementation has been evaluated on Monte Carlo simulations with known distributions using the same spatial and temporal sampling as 1 d of real meteor measurements. Based on the simulation results we find that the GPR implementation is robust, providing wind fields that are statistically unbiased with statistical variances that depend on the geometry and are proportional to the prior velocity variances. A conservative and fast approach can be straightforwardly implemented by employing overestimated prior variances and distances, while a more robust but computationally intensive approach can be implemented by employing training and fitting of model hyperparameters. The latter GPR approach has been applied to a 24 h dataset and shown to compare well to previously used homogeneous and gradient methods. Small-scale features have reasonably low statistical uncertainties, implying geophysical wind field horizontal structures as low as 20–50 km. In this article, we propose a multichannel sea clutter model in a spaceborne early warning radar system and analyze the influence of the sea clutter motion characteristics on the space-time adaptive processing (STAP) performance. To establish a multichannel sea clutter model, the 3-D Gerstner wave model is applied to construct the sea surface. Then the Pierson–Moskowitz wave spectrum and the stereo wave observation project (SWOP) directional spectrum are combined to describe the amplitude distribution of waves in different frequencies and directions. At the same time, the two-scale model is applied to obtain the specific backscattering coefficients of sea clutter at different time and positions. In addition, breaking waves are added in sea clutter returns with the form of false targets. Finally, the space-time distribution characteristics of sea clutter in a spaceborne multichannel array system and the influences of sea clutter under different wind speeds and directions on STAP performance are analyzed based on the simulation processing results. A 31 MHz meteor radar located in Svalbard was used to observe polar mesospheric echoes (PMSEs) during summer 2020. Data from 19 July were selected for detailed analysis, with a focus on extracting additional information to characterize the atmosphere in the PMSE region. The use of an all-sky meteor radar adds an additional use to data collected for meteor observations and enables the detection of PMSE layers across a wide field of view. Comparison with data from a 53.5 MHz narrow-beam mesosphere–stratosphere–troposphere (MST) radar shows good agreement in the morphology of the layer as detected between the two systems. Doppler spectra of PMSE layers reveal fine structure, including regions of enhanced return that move across the radar's field of view. Examination of the relationship between range and Doppler shift of off-zenith portions of the layer enables the estimation of wind speeds with high temporal resolution during PMSE conditions. Trials demonstrate good agreement between wind speeds obtained from PMSE Doppler spectra and those calculated from specular meteor trail radial velocities. Combined with the antenna polar diagram of the radar, this same relationship was used to infer the aspect sensitivity of observed PMSE backscatter, yielding a mean backscatter angular width of 6.8±3.3∘. A comparison of underdense meteor radar echo decay times during and outside of PMSE conditions did not demonstrate a strong correlation between the presence of PMSEs and shortened underdense meteor radar echo durations. The effects of sea surface temperature (SST) on ocean radar backscattering are investigated under both the neutral and nonneutral atmospheric conditions for the applications of wind retrieval. The impact factors are parameterized as functions of SST. The SST effects on the variations in ocean scattering and wind retrieval are evaluated using an analytic model which combines the KHCC03 spectrum and the second-order small slope approximation (SSA-II) model. Under the neutral condition, we present the following new insights at three commonly used bands: 1) the seawater permittivity accounts for a dominant effect of SST at the L-band. The SST effects induce a wind underestimation of 0.3 m/s over cold seawater and a wind overestimation of 0.24 m/s over warm seawater at the L-band and a wind speed of 8 m/s. The seawater viscosity plays a significant role in the SST effects on ocean scattering at the C- and Ku-bands, while its variation induced by SST has insignificant effects on L-band scattering; 2) for the C-band, the SST-induced wind retrieval error can be neglected at a medium wind speed due to the neutralization of the effects of various factors on surface roughness. Yet, the SST effects are not negligible at low and high wind speeds; and 3) both the dielectric and dynamic factors play significant roles in the SST effects on ocean scattering at the Ku-band. Under the nonneutral condition, the simulation results show that the air–sea interaction governs the SST effects on ocean scattering and wind velocity variations. Other than the air–sea interaction, the wind retrieval errors induced by other SST-related factors are negligible at the L- and C-bands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wind-profiling lidars are now regularly used in boundary-layer meteorology and in applications such as vertical wind field measurement. In order to verify the accuracy of the Doppler wind lidar, the major domestic Doppler wind lidar manufacturers were organized to compare the Minute-level average wind speed and direction data measured by the lidars to which measured by meteorological gradient tower and L band Sounding radar in Shenzhen and Zhangjiakou, respectively. The result of comparison with the wind cup on the meteorological gradient tower is in good agreement, the correlation coefficient of wind speed is close to or higher than 90%, and the maximum standard deviation of the wind direction is about 7 ° except the inflection point. When the L-band sounding radar is used as a reference for the lidar equipment which joint the comparison. The system difference and standard deviation of daily wind speed and direction vary greatly, and the reliability is poor. At the same time, it was founded that compared with the 1-minute average data, when the 10-minute average data were used for comparison, the system deviation and standard deviation were reduced. That mean the results were more stable and reliable. The comparison results show that the technical indicators of several domestic lidar equipment are equivalent to windcube indicators made by Vaisala and complying with the World Meteorological Organization's requirements for the Coherent Doppler Lidar indicator for near-term weather forecasts. In order to measure the variance of wind velocity, which is contributed from turbulence, via radar observations, it is necessary to remove the unwanted contribution from strong horizontal velocity components through the finite beamwidth of the radar. This effect is referred to as beam broadening. Although the amount of beam broadening has thus far been calculated based on the approximating assumption that the pattern of the beam is rotationally symmetric and has very low sidelobes, we need to take a more theoretical approach to radar—one that does not have a simple beam pattern like the Antarctic Program of the Antarctic Syowa Station (PANSY) radar (69S, 39E). In this article, we clarify the theoretical relationship in a very simple form between the turbulence spectrum, which is directly associated with the variance of turbulence, two-way beam patterns, and the observed spectrum, using autocorrelation functions (ACFs). The theory is thoroughly universal and applicable to any type of atmospheric radar, such that we can quantitatively analyze radar observation systems. Furthermore, we propose a “debroadening” algorithm based directly on this theory and from calculations of the general maximum likelihood (ML). During the descent of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite at the end of its mission, three types of special experiments were conducted; wide swath, 90° yaw (90Y: along-track scanning), and dense sampling. In this article, the results from the analysis of 90° yaw experimental data are shown in terms of a normalized radar cross section (NRCS) of the surface. The advantage of the 90Y experiment is that obtaining the incident angle dependency of the NRCS enables deduction of the conditions at the surface, especially over the ocean. The slope and intercept are calculated from the NRCS–incident angle plot except for angles near nadir. The slope correlates well with the sea-surface wind speed and therefore the rain attenuation can be estimated from the intercept and compared with the attenuation estimated from the radar reflectivity factor of the rain profile. Wind profiles are fundamental to the research and applications in boundary layer meteorology, air quality and numerical weather prediction. Large-scale wind profile data have been previously documented from network observations in several countries, such as Japan, the USA, various European countries and Australia, but nationwide wind profiles observations are poorly understood in China. In this study, the salient characteristics and performance of wind profiles as observed by the radar wind profiler network of China are investigated. This network consists of more than 100 stations instrumented with 1290 MHz Doppler radar designed primarily for measuring vertically resolved winds at various altitudes but mainly in the boundary layer. It has good spatial coverage, with much denser sites in eastern China. The wind profiles observed by this network can provide the horizontal wind direction, horizontal wind speed and vertical wind speed for every 120 m interval within the height of 0 to 3 km. The availability of the radar wind profiler network has been investigated in terms of effective detection height, data acquisition rate, data confidence and data accuracy. Further comparison analyses with reanalysis data indicate that the observation data at 89 stations are recommended and 17 stations are not recommended. In this article, an unsupervised clustering-based method for identifying rain-contaminated and low-backscatter regions in X-band marine radar images is presented. Rain blurs the wave signatures of radar images, and low-backscatter images caused by calibration errors or too-low wind speed contain little or no wave signatures. In both cases, ocean surface parameter measurement using X-band marine radar will be negatively affected. Four types of features can be extracted based on the distinct difference in texture and pixel intensity distribution between rain-free, rain-contaminated, and low-backscatter regions. Features extracted from each pixel are combined into a feature vector and mapped onto a $10\times 10$ -neuron self-organizing map (SOM). Then, the hierarchical agglomerative clustering algorithm is introduced, which clustered those neurons into three types (i.e., rain-free, rain-contaminated, and low-backscatter). The method is validated using the shipborne marine radar data collected on the East Coast of Canada. The good agreement between the pixel-based clustering results and manually segmented reference images indicates that both rain-contaminated and low-backscatter regions can be identified effectively using the proposed method. Compact high-frequency (HF) antenna arrays are convenient to deploy. However, using a small-aperture HF surface wave radar for wind direction measurement is still a challenging problem, since an unsatisfactory array pattern degrades the performance of Bragg ratio estimation. To address this issue, a digital beamforming method based on a superdirective synthesis technique for an HF receiving array that consists of seven elements positioned on a 5-m diameter circle is proposed. This superdirective beamforming method contains a sidelobe constraint. Subsequently, a hybrid superdirective beamforming and direction-finding method is adopted to estimate the wind direction using a multifrequency HF radar based on a circular array (MHF-C). The superdirective beamforming approach, as well as the wind direction estimation method, is presented in detail. The wind direction estimation method has been applied to the raw data sets that were collected with two MHF-C radars installed along the coast of the East China Sea in April 2015 and comparisons between radar-derived and in situ wind directions have been made. Ship-mounted anemometers were used to obtain in situ measurements at six sampling locations within the overlapping coverage of both radars. Another comparison between the radar-derived and anemometer-derived wind directions, which were obtained from June 15, 2015 to August 12, 2015, has also been made. The results indicate that the proposed method is effective for wind direction estimation with root-mean-square differences (RMSDs) between 24.1° and 33.1°, when wind speeds were higher than 5 m/s. The analysis encourages us to recommend a minimum wind speed of 5 m/s for reasonably assessing wind direction measurement performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following the August 13, 2011, Indiana State Fair stage collapse tragedy, caused by a wind gust from an approaching thunderstorm, Purdue University enforced a wind speed restriction of 30 mph (13 m s-1) for tents at outdoor events. During these events, volunteers stand outside with handheld anemometers, measuring and reporting when the wind speeds exceed this limit. In this study, we report testing of a new system to automate high-wind alerts based on observations from a Doppler radar, the X-band Teaching and Research Radar (XTRRA), near Purdue's campus. XTRRA scans over campus at low elevations approximately every 5 minutes. Using XTRRA data collected over its first eight months of operation, we developed an algorithm that generates highwind alerts whenever observed winds at altitudes below 240 m (the height of Ross-Ade Stadium) exceed the 13 m s-1 threshold. We describe how a combination of median filtering, clutter filtering, and statistical outlier removal mitigated false alarms caused by noise and ground clutter. The high-wind alerts are validated against wind gust observations from a nearby Automated Surface Observing System at Purdue University Airport, known as KLAF. Results indicate that the alerts work well in high-wind events associated with precipitation but less well in high-wind events not associated with precipitation (e.g., frontal passages). This is likely because XTRRA, which has a wavelength of 3 cm, is less sensitive to clear-air echoes than an operational WSR-88D. Boundary layer radar (L-band) wind profilers frequently encounter a significant problem arising from the contamination of intermittent clutter, produced by seasonal and nocturnal migrating birds, which often yields erroneous wind velocity and boundary layer information. Classical harmonic wavelet transforms (HWTs) are inadequate in removing the transient clutter contamination under certain conditions, particularly when the clutter is significant. We implemented an adaptive complex harmonic discrete wavelet transform with an advanced statistical method to overcome the shortcomings of the classical wavelet method. This algorithm effectively eliminates the bird contamination even where the classical method fails. Finally, a multiple peak-picking (MPP) algorithm was added to select true atmospheric signals and estimate accurate moments. The obtained wind velocity measurements were compared with those derived using the conventional method and validated with global positioning system radiosonde winds. An important objective in scatterometry is the estimation of near-surface wind speed and direction in the presence of rain. We investigate an attenuation correction method using data from the High-Altitude Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (HIWRAP) dual-frequency scatterometer, which operates at Ku and Ka band with dual conical scans at incidence angles of 30° and 40°. The method relies on the fact that the differential normalized surface cross section, δσ0 = σ0(Ka) − σ0(Ku), is relatively insensitive to wind speed and direction and that this quantity is closely related to the magnitude of the differential path attenuation, δA = A(Ka) − A(Ku), arising from precipitation, cloud, and atmospheric gases. As the method relies only on the difference between quantities measured in the presence and absence of rain, the estimates are independent of radar calibration error. As a test of the method's accuracy, we make use of the fact that the radar rain reflectivities just above the surface, as seen along different incidence angles, are approximately the same. This yields constraint equations in the form of differences between pairs of path attenuations along different lines of sight to the surface. A second validation method uses the dual-frequency radar returns from the rain just above the surface where it can be shown that the difference between the Ku- and Ka-band-measured radar reflectivity factors provide an estimate of differential path attenuation. Comparisons between the path attenuations derived from the normalized surface cross section and those from these surface-independent methods generally show good agreement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wind wave spectrum describes the quasi-periodic nature of the ocean surface oscillations and plays an indispensable role in the study of microwave electromagnetic scattering from sea surface. A reliable spectrum model suitable for radar cross section (RCS) predictions at different radar frequencies is desired. This paper evaluated the performances of five common spectrum models (i.e., Fung spectrum, Durden–Vesecky spectrum, Apel spectrum, Elfouhaily spectrum, and the newest version of Hwang spectrum, H18) on the normalized radar backscattering cross section (NRBCS) simulations based on advanced integral equation model (AIEM) at L-, C-, X-, and Ku-bands versus incidence angle, wind direction, and wind speed by comparing with the model and measured data for validation. These results indicate no single wave spectrum of them is satisfying for all the four radar frequencies, e.g., Apel and H18 spectra are better for L- and C-bands, Apel spectrum for X-band, and Elfouhaily and H18 spectra for Ku-band. Given this, three average composite spectrum models are constructed using different spectral models (i.e., all five spectra, Apel + Elfouhaily + H18, and Apel + H18) to simulate NRBCSs, similar to that of the individual spectrum model. It is concluded that the combination of Apel and H18 spectra overall performs best among the individual one and other composited spectra in like-polarized NRBCSs versus incidence angles, wind directions, and wind speeds, for wind speed greater than 30 m/s where the combination of the five spectra work well at Ku-band. Wave–current interaction is a common and important phenomenon in the ocean. As an ocean remote sensing tool, high-frequency (HF) radar can be used to measure currents and wave parameters. In this paper, the possibility of studying wave–current interaction using HF radar is investigated. The first-order spectral power (FSP) of HF radar is used to explore the effect of current on the Bragg wave. By analyzing the FSP change with current (FSP-current distribution), we find that, in deep water, the wave–current interactions mainly belong to 2-D refraction case, while, over a relatively shallow shelf, the interactions are stronger and more complicated. Based on local topography and current field data at Taiwan Strait, the simulation results obtained using the SWAN model confirm the 2-D refraction of the Bragg wave. When the wave–current interaction is stable, we compensate the FSP with radar-measured currents according to the radar extracted FSP-current distribution and achieve a more accurate wind estimation. This paper presents a new simple empirical model for the backscattering coefficients of skewed sea surfaces. Instead of using a complicated bispectrum function for the backscattering coefficient of a skewed sea surface, a simple modifying term is multiplied to the autocorrelation length of the surface. The unknown constants of the modifying term are obtained by com-paring the simple empirical model with an extensive database for various wind speeds, incidence angles, polarizations, and frequencies. Abstract The mid-latitude mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) wind speeds measured by two SKiYMET meteor radars (MRs) at Collm (51°N, 13°E) and Kazan (56°N, 49°E) during 2016–2017 were analyzed to study longitudinal wind structures. The differences between monthly mean prevailing wind speeds and tidal amplitudes were compared with the corresponding differences obtained from TIMED/TIDI satellite winds and gradient wind speeds from the AURA/MLS instrument. It is shown that the MR wind difference between the two sites is statistically significant. The difference of the horizontal prevailing winds can be explained by a superposition of the background zonal flow, which is different at the two latitudes, with stationary planetary waves of different origin. The Sentinel-1 satellite mission provides high-resolution, all-weather, day and night Synthetic Aperture Radar images. Studies about wind parameters above the ocean are frequent, inland lakes were seldom investigated. The objective of this article is to investigate the potential of C-band SAR for wind retrieval over lakes for evaluation of representativeness of meteorological station data. A number of lakes from Austria and Hungary (lakes in Salzkammergut, Lake Neusiedl and Lake Balaton), where wind measurements from automatic weather stations are available from the surroundings, has been selected for this study. Functions for speed retrieval are developed from empirical relationships for both available polarizations, VV and VH. Meteorological station data are used for calibration and validation. Best results were obtained for VV although with a dependency on incidence angle. Functions for different incidence angles according to the wind speed were, therefore, determined. There is a good correlation between the measured and the calculated wind speed (R of 0.71-0.91 for calibration sites; average R 0.71 for all sites). Average wind speed patterns for the lakes can be derived, but need to be analyzed separately for descending and ascending acquisitions due to difference in daytime (morning versus late afternoon).
