The study analyses 19 years of hourly quantitative precipitation estimates (RADKLIM-RW) concerning the spatial scaling behaviour of extreme rainfall for Germany as well as general heavy rainfall patterns. Four regions with the same size of 256 km × 256 km were selected with varying characteristics. For each region, spatial rainfall maxima for different aggregation steps with box length of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128 km were retrieved using sliding and fixed window methods. Rainfall was classified with two parameters into patterns dominated by convection or advection, respectively. Based on the calculated spatialmaxima, potential maximum rain rates were extrapolated for sub-pixel scale. Though the power laws of the resulting scaling relationship have a very good fit, no mono-scale power law could be derived from the data due to different rainfall mechanisms on different spatial scales. Typical power laws exist for more convective characteristics up to a scale of 8 km box length and for more advective characteristics with larger box lengths. A regional power law for maxima of convective rainfall could be used to statically refine the radar resolution to 250m or even 125m box length. However, when scaled to smaller box lengths or to the size of a Hellmann gauge (200 cm2) the values become increasingly unrealistic. The results indicate that radar derived areal precipitation values are limited to the radar scale (here 1 km2), despite the fact that they are scaled to fit observed values from rain gauges. Purpose: This paper aims to propose a method for accurate radar echo simulation of wind turbines (WTs) array. It can solve the problem of passive interference from wind farms to neighboring radar stations. Design/methodology/approach: First of all, the equivalent model of scattering centers of a single WT is obtained by using the spatial spectrum estimation method, and the accuracy of this model is verified by the scaled model experiment; then scattering centers model of WTs array was established by using the spatial coordinate transformation method. According to the position relationship between the model and the radar, and combined with the multipath scattering theory, the radar echo equation of WTs array was deduced. Finally, the simulation analysis is carried out with the four GoldWind 77/1500 WTs as an example and compared with the traditional methods. Findings: This paper verifies the accuracy of the equivalent model of scattering centers through the WT scaled model experiment, and through simulation analysis, it is found that the result of this method is more consistent with the multipath scattering of radar echo between WTs array in practical engineering than the traditional method. Originality/value: Based on the theory of high-frequency scattering, this paper introduces scattering centers into the solution of radar echo and considers the multipath scattering of radar echo, then a method for solving the radar echo of WTs array based on scattering centers is proposed. A highly linear active mixer in Gallium Nitride on Silicon (GaN-on-Si) monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) technology, operating in Ka-band for radar applications is introduced. It exhibits a local oscillator (LO) balanced topology of gate-pumped mixers based on high-electron mobility transistors (HEMT) and operates in down-conversion mode. Its design principles and the theoretical foundation of its linearity features resulting from both the high power handling capability of GaN-on-Si HEMTs and the corresponding high applied LO level are presented. An extensive characterization based on excitation of a prototype by broadband continuous wave signals and frequency modulated continuous wave signals validates both the analytical treatment of its linearity and the design of the prototype of the mixer. In the 35–40 GHz operating band, this prototype exhibits a state-of-the-art input referred third order intercept point that reaches 39.1 dBm, and a maximum input referred second order intercept point of 39.4 dBm, with a corresponding conversion gain of −5.2 dB, and LO level of 24 dBm. In designing a mm-wave ultra-wideband pulse-Doppler radar IC, one of the main challenges encountered is to reduce the high power consumption of the circuitries in the IC. A direct-RF receiver can be used in the radar’s design to reduce the radar’s power consumption. However, a digitizer that can directly digitize mm-wave ultra-wideband radar pulses is needed to implement such a receiver. This work presents the design of such a digitizer, which comprises several multi-pass sub-ADCs that operate together. Each multi-pass sub-ADC works fundamentally like a flash ADC but comprises one comparator only. A test chip containing a 6-bit prototype of the digitizer is fabricated in a 40 nm CMOS technology. The prototype consumes 19.7 mW when operated at 4 GSa/s and can operate with input signal frequencies of up to 64 GHz while achieving a −1.7/−6 dBFS SNDR of 21.1/22.8 dB at 60 GHz (the corresponding FoM is 532/434 fJ/c-s). The digitizer has a relatively high effective parallel-equivalent input impedance at 60 GHz, which, in a radar IC implementation, allows it to be driven with a relatively low power-consuming 60 GHz RF buffer. This paper presents a primary impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar system for real-time short-range localization, e.g., for smart traffic and automotive applications. The radar system consisting of an integrated radar transceiver (TRx) using 45-nm SOI CMOS technology and an FPGA-based signal processing. The efficient transmitter (Tx), which complies with the regulations for both indoor and outdoor applications, modulates and emits a seventh derivative Gaussian pulse. In the receiver (Rx), echo signals will be amplified and sampled in real-time. The echo pulses are recovered by signal processing hardware on the FPGA, which is also used to perform simple classification tasks like user warning. The radar system is compact, portable, and power efficient. The Tx has a high-energy efficiency of $\mathrm {11~ \text {p} \text {J} /pulse}$. The proposed radar system achieves very high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and range precision. It has a maximum detection range of $\mathrm {15~m }$ and a range resolution down to $\mathrm {3~ \text {cm}}$. In this paper, we present quantized state feedback control for the distributed radar with packet dropouts and time-varying delays. The measurements of state signal are quantized by logarithmic quantizer before being communicated. The measurements missing and time delay often occur due to the communication channel failure. The data missing phenomena was modeled by a Bernoulli distributed stochastic variable taking values of 1 and 0, the delays are time-varying. Firstly, the quantized state feedback control design is transformed into stability analysis for a 2D stochastic system. Secondly, we obtain the stability condition based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) of mean-square asymptotic stability of the 2D stochastic system. Additionally, a quantized state feedback controller is designed based on the linear matrix inequality theorem to meet the environmental requirements of the distributed radar system. Compared to existing methods, the proposed controller designed under this method demonstrates robustness and stability in addressing the three challenges of packet loss, time-varying delays, and quantization errors in the distributed radar. The problem of joint detection and bearing estimation for a two-dimensional (2D) array radar in training demanding scenarios is addressed. Regardless of the cause of the angle deviation, we model the 2D steering vector as a fully incremental form. Thus, the 2D array requires the optimization of two target cosine offsets. To relax the requirement of sufficient training data, we incorporate persymmetric structure in the design of the receiver. Unlike traditional joint optimization, the persymmetric structure brings a more complex multidimensional matrix form, making detection optimization more difficult. Then, we transform the optimization problem into a fractional-order programming problem and solve it by Dinkelbach algorithm. Finally, numerical results verify the superiority of the proposed method over conventional methods in insufficient training scenarios. Also, the proposed method is more robust. Interrupted sampling repeater jamming (ISRJ) is coherent with the radar-transmitted signal, which can form multi-false targets at the radar receiver. Therefore, ISRJ suppression is a compelling task in electronic counter-countermeasure. Intra-pulse frequency coded signals are not well energy-concentrated in the time-frequency (TF) domain, resulting in interference and target overlapping in the TF domain when the number of intermittent samplings and the number of forwarding times is large. To solve this problem, an anti-ISRJ method is proposed based on intra-pulse frequency modulation (FM) slope agile radar waveform joint fractional Fourier transform (FrFT). Firstly, the radar transmits the intra-pulse FM slope agile signal, and the adjacent sub-pulses are modulated with positive and negative FM slopes. Next, the echo signals are divided into multiple slices with the same sub-pulse timing as the transmitted signals. Then, utilizing the characteristics of transceiver time-sharing and energy suppression of the ISRJ, the FrFT is performed on each slice of the echo, and the interfered echo slices can be identified by fractional search and fractional order comparison. Finally, the interference in interfered echo slices is suppressed by fractional filtering. Simulation results show that the proposed method can recognize the interfered echo slice 100 % when the jamming-to-noise ratio and jamming-to-signal ratio (JSR) are both greater than 0 dB and do not generate false alarms when the signal-to-noise ratio is greater than 0 dB and JSR is greater than 10 dB. Fractional filtering reduces the loss of target energy in the process of interference suppression. Simulation results also verify the effectiveness of the proposed method against three typical types of synchronous ISRJ and the compound interferences formed by the combination of different types of synchronous ISRJ. Attitude and size estimation of spacecraft components is one of the main contents of space target awareness. In this paper, a radar-camera joint observation scheme applicable to multiple spaceborne platforms is developed to measure the orientation and length of the spacecraft solar panels, which benefits from the observation diversity jointly provided by radars and cameras. Firstly, an automatic keypoint detection network is trained to extract the endpoints of the solar panels in the radar and optical images with high accuracy. Then, the projected lengths of the solar panels calculated from the extracted endpoints along with the observation equations of the radars and cameras are jointly used to obtain the orientation and actual length of the solar panels by an optimization approach. Simulated experiments are conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed measuring methods, which achieves length estimation errors within 0.2 m and orientation estimation errors within 1°. Tornadic storms with a tornado intensity of F2 or stronger on the Fujita scale that occurred in recent years (between 2013 and 2020) in Germany were analysed in detail. The 20 tornadoes, which developed on 17 different days, occurred in various parts of Germany. The majority of the analysed tornadoes occurred from May to early September. The other four events are typical cold-season cases that differ from the warm-season cases in some aspects which are discussed where applicable. Similarities and differences of the prevailing synoptic and mesoscale conditions are assessed in addition to the convective environment of the events. On the majority of the analysed tornadic days, the event happened on the forward flank of a long wave trough that was slowly propagating eastward. The second typical situation is a short wave trough passing rather fast over the area of interest from West to East. All cold-season cases occurred in high shear, low CAPE environments. Furthermore, the type of convection is analysed using a multi-source approach to best characterise the events. For this purpose, radar reflectivity and rotation data were combined with lightning detection in order to analyse the tornadic storms with respect to storm mode and storm evolution as well as lightning and rotation characteristics. The most common convective mode is linearly organised convection followd by multicellular storms. In many of the warm-season cases, radar radial wind data showed a persistent rotation track. The lightning activity of the warm-season season tornadic storms was high. In many cases, a lightning jump occurred between 5 and 120 minutes before the event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
