Based on Bernhard Fabian's "Buch, Bibliothek, und geisteswissenschaftliche Forschung (The Book, the Library, and Humanistic Research)," this study is a commentary on the relationship between library and user. Discussing the characteristics and requirements of research in the humanities, it stresses the interrelationship between humanities research and the library. Two letters from German educators respond to an article by Carola Murray-Seegert (EC 602 675) on mainstreaming of people with disabilities in Germany. The letters, in both the original German and English translation, basically support the article's premises and urge increasing efforts toward integration of the disabled in Germany. (DB)

The article focuses on the plan to license the "Aero-Hydro" paper process developed by engineer H. Scherbak to American paper manufacturers. It states that Russia and Germany have the exclusive rights on the process because Scherbak communicated with the countries for the manufacture of the process. It says that changes which would suit the process in paper machines are inexpensive. It adds that resistance to acids can be added to the process if it will be changed into the manufacture line.

To reduce the CO2 footprint, the Fraunhofer IGCV research with a state-of-the-art wetlaid nonwovens machine for recycling carbon fibers. The production processes are similar to those of a paper manufacturing machine. The crucial difference: paper fibers are not turned into the paper, but recycled carbon fibers are turned into nonwoven roll fabrics. The carbon fiber thus gets a second life and finds an environmentally friendly use in nonwovens, such as door panels, engine bonnets, roof structures, underbody protection (automotive), and heat shields (helicopter tail boom), as well as in aircraft interiors. The article focuses on the U.S. paper industry. In 1985, as the dollar strengthened, prices of internationally traded paper products plunged. The price of pulp, for example, dropped nearly 15%. With every uptick in the dollar, droves of salesmen from such paper-producing countries as Sweden, West Germany, Italy, Finland, Brazil and Great Britain deplaned and knocked on U.S. doors. Not only were their prices good, but their products were often innovative and of a quality superior to that of competing U.S. products. U.S. paper executives have even begun to notice the export market themselves.

Power production from coal is increasing in Germany due to the declining price of carbon dioxide emissions, which makes coal more competitive with gas-fired plants. The cost of running a lignite-burning plant is largely determined by the European Union's emissions trading system. The falling carbon prices have boosted the profitability of CO2-intensive plants. However, despite the recent increase in coal production, fossil fuels as a whole are still on a downward trajectory in Germany's power grid, with wind and solar making up a significant portion of electricity generation. A new report paints a darker picture of what may be the highest profile case of scientific fraud in postwar Germany. After a 2-year investigation of all 347 scientific articles co-authored by former hematologist and cancer researcher Friedhelm Herrmann, a task force jointly sponsored by Germany's main granting agency, the DFG, and the country's largest cancer charity released a report on 19 June indicating that the scope of the fraud--first uncovered 3 years ago--is far more extensive than previously thought. Although Herrmann and a co-author have left their academic posts, the new revelations could place other careers in jeopardy.

This article presents information about political developments around the world during the week as of February 22, 1917. Berlin's figures for submarine sinkings began by agreeing with Lloyd's figures, but have since steadily diverged. What appears to be an effort to impose new German war taxes, sufficient to cover annual interest on the war debt, is reported from Berlin through Amsterdam. The request of the news-print manufacturers that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission fix the prices of paper during the period from March 1 to September 1 is, perhaps, the logical outcome of the activities of that the commission during the last eight months.

After outstanding success in mud juice filtration, proven within a sugar beet factory in Germany through pilot trials during the campaign 2022/2023 this paper will be about the next stage of evolution into a production scale plant trial. The factory, part of a major beet sugar producer in Germany, decided to invest in a retro- fit to Lenzing's newly developed and patented candle type cake filtration system CakeFil. The factory has been operating candle type precoat filters with traditional design in mud juice filtration stage. It has already challenged the LENZING CakeFil design in pilot scale throughout the last campaign and saw a smoothly running mud juice filtration without any intervention over the whole campaign, whereas the existing filtration required seven filter cloth changes and numerous hot water flushing steps during the same period. In this filtration stage at this particular factory a cloth exchange means emptying and opening seven pressure vessels with a diameter of 3 meters (12') and exchanging filter cloth on 288 candles per unit. Which equals more than 14 000 candles to be manipulated throughout an average campaign. A hot water flushing step additionally means to take the filter out of filtration service for 3 hours. Therefore, factory and corporate management decided to exchange the candle design as well as the way of operation on one of their existing process scale filters for a plant trial. The results of this plant trial will be presented in detail within this jointly developed paper. To date the very young 2023/2024 campaign just started, but the plant trial already shows very promising results as the newly equipped unit did not require a single manual or other intervention whereas the existing filters already called for hot water flushing of each individual filter every other day due to decreasing performance. At the time of presentation, the campaign will be finished and the paper will contrast the existing state of the art filtration system with the performance of the CakeFil in terms of net filtrate flow, downtime, filtrate quality and required manpower and spares. In 1997, the team has finished the first web-based clinical trial that test the effectiveness of BASF's high-blood pressure drug. The first paper, "Multicultural Approaches in Education: A German Experience," by Carmen Treppte, describes the development of Turkish Children and Mothers, a project designed to help preschoolers in the Ruhr Valley of Germany develop linguistic, motor, cognitive, and social abilities. The paper also describes various aspects of the project, including those that relate to maternal involvement, educational facilities, the needs of project participants, and cultural factors that should be considered when serving the ethnic Turkish minority that is adapting to German culture. In the second paper, "Culture, Schooling, and Education in a Democracy," Victoria R. Fu defines multiculturalism, draws distinctions between education and schooling, proposes a conceptual framework for implementing multicultural education, and examines Bronfenbrenner's and Vygotsky's concepts of development. The third paper, "Responsive Teaching: A Culturally Appropriate Approach," by Andrew J. Stremmel, explains responsive teaching, which involves the construction and negotiation of shared meaning or perspectives during interactions, and suggests ways to help early childhood teachers become more responsive in their interactions with children of various backgrounds. A reference list is provided with each paper. The bibliography that follows the papers contains 34 documents and 36 journal articles on multiculturalism in early childhood programs selected from a search of the ERIC database. The fact that different urban structures have different climatic effects and therefore differ in their thermal loads for people is well known. However, there is a lack of quantitative and qualitative surveys in specific districts that are suitable to derive accepted adaptation measures. This paper addresses the research questions where thermally stressed areas in public space are identified by mobile measurements and by mental maps and what are the causes of each, where both methods agree or disagree, and what are the benefits and the limitations of using both methods for prioritizing adaptation measures. Mobile measurements in an urban quarter over a whole day can supply needed data for determining thermal loads of urban structures and their temporal development. Mental maps give information about the perception of urban dwellers and -- based on the spatial distribution of obtained data -- the user frequency. Both methods provide information concerning where and when measures should be taken in order to facilitate adaptation to heat. The paper presents the results of mobile measurements and mental maps of two different urban quarters in Germany. Thermal loads were assessed by using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) for three selected summer days. Results indicated that the different urban structures can differ by up to 7K or by two stages of thermal stress during a hot summer day. Surface material with high albedo can overcompensate smaller sky view factors resulting in high thermal loads. Street trees caused changing thermal loads but reduced them on average. Identified hot spots based on mobile measurements mostly correlated with hot spots identified by mental maps, if they were frequently used. However, hottest spots identified by measurements were not necessarily most frequently named as hot spots in the mental maps.Most often named hot spots of mental maps coincided with major traffic routes suggesting that user frequency is important. We conclude that the combination of both methods can be valuable for identifying locations with high priority for climate adaptation in cities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
