Abstract
- Power production from coal is increasing in Germany due to the declining price of carbon dioxide emissions, which makes coal more competitive with gas-fired plants. The cost of running a lignite-burning plant is largely determined by the European Union's emissions trading system. The falling carbon prices have boosted the profitability of CO2-intensive plants. However, despite the recent increase in coal production, fossil fuels as a whole are still on a downward trajectory in Germany's power grid, with wind and solar making up a significant portion of electricity generation.
