The article presents the results of an investigation of the wholesale trade in groceries in San Francisco, California from January 1, 1900 to January 1, 1930. An analysis of the tendencies in the San Francisco market is presented, and the industry sentiment on the Pacific Coast that the San Francisco wholesale grocers are particularly well entrenched is described. The various types of enterprises present in the market are outlined, including chain stores, cooperative retail groups, and independent establishments. Several adjustments and adaptations made by companies in the market are discussed.
