Chapter 6 of the book "Rose Man of Sing Sing" is presented. It describes the deaths witnessed by Charles E. Chapin, a New York newspaper editor, when he was still working as a crime reporter for the "Chicago Tribune" in Illinois. Chapin was assigned to cover the hanging of the anarchists who were accused of being responsible for the explosion at Haymarket Square in May 1886. He related first-hand accounts of the murder of William A. Macaulley, who was charged with infidelity, by his wife Ida.

Porter, head warder of the county prison, came asking Mr. Winston to hang Mr. Smith for murdering his wife and three children on early morning the next day. Mr. Winston got worried for he will be leaving her daughter Helen and their visitors Gladys and James Palsey for about three days.

Chapter XXXIII of the book "The Battle Of The Strong: A Romance of Two Kingdoms" by Gilbert Parker is presented. It explores the condition of Vier Prison, the dungeon where Elie Mattingley was detained while emphasizing on the man hunt for Olivier Delagarde as traitor. It highlights the salvation of Mattingley from execution when he was strangled than being hanged which come as a result of the substitution of the rope to be used at the hanging by Dormy Jamais the night before.

Novel VII, Fifth Day of the book "The Decameron," Vol. II, by Giovanni Boccaccio is presented. In this chapter, Teodoro, being enamoured of Violante, daughter of Messer Amerigo, his lord, gets her with child, and is sentenced to the gallows. While Teodoro is being scourged thither, he is recognized by his father, and being set at large, takes Violante to wife.

An encyclopedia entry for "a short history of hanging" is presented. The practice of hanging is believed to originate in Persia and was adopted in England in the 12th century. It was indicated that under the reign of King Henry VIII, 72,000 criminals were executed by hanging, averaging 2,000 executions annually. Several methods of hanging were discussed, including the long drop designed by William Marwood.

An encyclopedia entry for Samuel Herbert Dougal is presented. Born in 1846, Dougal was a Victorian murderer in Great Britain who killed his common-law wife, Camille Holland. It is noted that Dougal was an expert when it comes to women. There were speculations that his two wives were poisoned as they died a sudden death. On July 14, 1903, he was hanged to death.

They suffocated their first victim, Joseph the Miller, with a pillow while he was drunk. Burke was hanged after making a full confession on January 28, 1829.

An encyclopedia entry for "injustice at Nuremberg" is presented. It offers information on the botched hangings of Nazi leaders in the Nuremberg gymnasium. A Master-Sergeant, John C. Woods revealed in an interview with the "Stars and Stripes" that the Americans botched the executions of the Nazi leaders in October 1946. Another hangman named Albert Pierrepoint declined to contribute a critical review on the botched hangings to the American United Press Association. Pierrepoint agreed to train the post-war Austrian executioners.

An encyclopedia entry for Half-hanged Smith is presented. Also known as John Smith, he was a member of the Second Regiment of Foot Guards and regularly engages in housebreaking. He was hanged for the theft of 50 pairs of shoes, 900 yards of cloth, 400 pounds of silk and 148 pairs of gloves. After he was declared dead, he was cut down but he turned out to be alive and was given an unconditional pardon after giving information on other criminals.

According to Berry, he had no problems with hanging an innocent man because the crime committed involved the law and not him. On November 30, 1885, he was able to decapitate Robert Goodale, a murderer, despite lowering the drop to five feet nine inches.

The article reports on Francisco Franco's regime in Spain, where, in September 1975, ten freedom fighters were executed through strangulation, and two of these were pregnant. It is indicated that Yves Montand along with Michel Foucault flew to Madrid but they were not allowed to talk to the press. Five militants were allowed by Franco to be shot instead of being strangulated. On November 20, 1975, gay dictator Franco died, after having been kept alive for years by his doctors.
