Abstract

The article features the landforms and processes for examination along the field-trip route in the Nechelik Channel in the Colville River Delta in northern Alaska. The Colville River, the largest river on the North Slope of Alaska and one with freshwater input to the Arctic Ocean, with its large discharge and heavy sediment load has resulted in the production of a deltaic system shaped by the interaction of depositional and erosional processes, sea-level changes and glaciations.

Abstract

The article provides detailed descriptions of tour stops in the Prudhoe Bay and Kuparuk oilfields, the two largest oilfields in the U.S., located in northern Alaska, and illustrates prominent permafrost-related phenomena and human adaptation to the permafrost environment. Together with four adjacent oilfields, they have contributed about 20 percent of the domestic oil production in the U.S. The first stop is Deadhorse, where road access to the Arctic Ocean and the oilfields is restricted.

This chapter describes the atmosphere-ice-upper ocean energy exchange through the Arctic sea ice pack. The surface energy balance is an essential element of the climate in any region of the world, but it takes on added significance in the polar oceans, where small changes in the surface energy balance can lead to dramatic changes in the surface itself. The surface energy balance determines the surface temperature and the sign and magnitude of the turbulent and radiative heat fluxes to the ice from the atmosphere and melting rate.

This chapter addresses the issues of Arctic Basin pollution dynamics. The problem of Arctic Basin pollution causes most anxiety to investigators. It is known that the ecosystems of the Arctic seas are considerably more vulnerable than the ecosystems of other seas. The processes that clean the Arctic Ocean are slower. Marine organisms of the Arctic ecosystem live in the polar climate, where the vegetation period is seriously restricted. Some feedback mechanisms operate with significant time delays and the capacity to neutralize the effects of human activity appears to be weak.
