Abstract
- This chapter describes the atmosphere-ice-upper ocean energy exchange through the Arctic sea ice pack. The surface energy balance is an essential element of the climate in any region of the world, but it takes on added significance in the polar oceans, where small changes in the surface energy balance can lead to dramatic changes in the surface itself. The surface energy balance determines the surface temperature and the sign and magnitude of the turbulent and radiative heat fluxes to the ice from the atmosphere and melting rate.
