This study of the life and work of the Italian geologist Giovanni Capellini (1833-1922) started in 2005 during the process of restoring and reorganizing that portion of his personal archive kept at the Academy Lunigianese of Sciences in La Spezia, Italy. Until now, little has been written on the scientific achievements of Giovanni Capellini, resulting from a sixty year career. This contribution aims to offer an overview of the scientific biography of Capellini, his publications and manuscript documents, and the main contents of that portion of his personal archive housed in La Spezia. Capellini began his long career in the natural sciences by educating himself in La Spezia, after which he enrolled in and graduated from the University of Pisa, Italy. He concluded his formal education with one year of educational travel in Europe. At the age of twenty-seven, Capellini obtained the professorship of geology at the University of Bologna and remained there for sixty years. During his career, he achieved several important goals, among them the reorganization of the Geological and Paleontological Museum of the University of Bologna. The Museum was founded in 1871 and soon became an institution recognized for its excellence in Italy and throughout Europe. By the conclusion of his career in 1922, he was a professor of international fame, Senator of the Kingdom of Italy, and supporter of international scientific dialogue as an indispensable means for the advancement of knowledge. Capellini always promoted the diffusion of natural sciences studies, both within Italy and throughout Europe. He contributed to three regional mapping projects that were incorporated into the geological map of Italy. Summary: Robert Emlyn Havard (1901–1985; general practitioner and sometimes medical scientist) was the only non-literary member of the Inklings – a1930s and 1940s Oxford University club which included Lewis and Tolkien. Despite spending most of his time in family medicine, Havard was a productive medical scientist. While still a student at Cambridge University, Havard co-authored an influential study published in the Journal of Physiology of 1926 entitled ‘The influence of exercise on the inorganic phosphates in the blood and urine’. A biography of painter Honorée Sharrer is presented. Sharrer was born in 1920 and took up painting at an early age. She became an artist-member of the San Diego Fine Arts Society at the age of 16 and graduated from the Bishop's School in La Jolla, California. Sharrer married historian Perez Zagorin in 1947 and gave birth to a son, Adam Desmond, in 1953.

This biography discusses nineteenth century bank-note engraver James Bannister (1821-1901). He was born in England, served his apprenticeship with engraver Alexander L. Dick in New York City, and worked at engravers Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edison during the 1850s designing vignettes for banknotes such as "A Slave Picking Cotton" for the Eastern Bank of Alabama. He was appointed treasurer of the Franklin-Lee Bank Note Company in 1897 and died in Brooklyn, New York on October 11, 1901.

This article describes and analyses the various bibliometric components of articles published in Indian Journal of International Law (IJIL). The paper analyses the various quality aspects of 326 articles which were published during the period under study from 1960 to 2010. The paper covers the quantitative growth of articles by volume and year, distribution of references by volume and year, range and percentage of references per article, authorship pattern of articles, authorship productivity, ranked list of most prolific contributors, ranked list of authors by geographical affiliation, ranked list of authors by profession, ranked list by subjects of articles and journal self-citation in the articles. How often an article, an author, or a journal is cited by others is an indication of the quality of the journal and performance of the researcher or group--the higher the number of references, the higher the level of quality and performance. This paper offers some new insights into aspects of the life and work of the shipwright William Sutherland (1668-1740). He went to sea in 1679 and advanced to master carpenter by 1692. Afterwards he served three years as quarterman at Portsmouth under his uncle William Bagwell. At Deptford in 1715 he became embroiled in controversies over timber measurement abuses. He was appointed master caulker at Sheerness in 1717 and died there in 1740. Patronage from the Earl of Sutherland was not sufficient to allow his greater advancement. His theoretical ideas about ships' moulding based on Royal Society papers and Newton's Solid of Least Resistance were sometimes over rigid and often out of step with contemporary practices, while highly perceptive relative to specific practical needs. This paper sketches the biographies of three early seventeenth-century intellectuals by the name of Romanos Nikiforou: a uniate hieromonk from Thessaloniki who studied at the Collegio Greco in Rome and became a parish priest in Sicily; another hieromonk from Thessaloniki who lived in Paris, frequented the Capuchins and wrote a grammar of vernacular Greek; and an orthodox priest from Corinth who went to Rostock and sought the help of Gustavus Adolphus for the liberation of Greece. This paper aims to prove that these three intellectuals are in fact one and the same person, and to establish the connection between planning an armed revolt in the Peloponnese and composing a grammar. Juan Mencarini Pierotti (1860 - 1939) was a Spanish employee of the Imperial Maritime Customs Service of China from 1881 to 1912 and later a businessman in the import-export sector with base in Shanghai. Parallel to his professional career, Mencarini pioneered in the history of postage stamps in East Asia, contributed to learned societies with articles and lectures, and was reputed among the foreign community of the treaty ports as an accomplished amateur pictorialist photographer. Based on previously unexamined repositories, contemporary press records, and the cataloguing and analysis of over two hundred photographs, this paper analyzes Mencarini's preserved corpus of photographs as well as his participation in the creation of the first associations of amateur photographers in Shanghai and Fuzhou. Mencarini's photographs captured human types, examples of craftsmanship and agriculture, and architectural landmarks of the area of Fuzhou, and reveal a generic Western imperialist gaze that articulates visual and textual discourses to support knowledge production and commercial opportunities, leaving room for the exploration of the aesthetics of pictorialism. The 100th anniversary of the appearance of Sudhoffs Archiv, founded in 1917, suggests a view not only on the long history of this journal. It also has stimulated the editors to take a closer look at the founder himself, Karl Sudhoff (1853-1938), and his proximity to National Socialism. This paper offers a brief biography of Sudhoff, and-based on a documentation offered by Werner Kiimmel-provides all the data known with regard to Sudhoff's attitude towards his Jewish colleagues, before and after 1933, and the possible motives behind his joining the Nazi party in 1933. A biography of editor of journal "Manuscripts" David Rogers Chesnutt is presented. He was born in 1940 in Athens, Alabama and enrolled at Auburn University after completing high school. He then transferred to the University of Alabama where he studied journalism. Other topics include Chesnutt's working as a newspaper reporter, his selection for the Laurens Papers Project, and working with "Alabama Journal". His death on December 15, 2014 at his home at the age of 74 is also mentioned.

Geoffrey Sawer was the Foundation Professor of Law at The Australian National University, appointed in 1950 at the age of 39. He was a pioneer in the understanding of law in a broader context, especially at the intersection between law and politics, and his fluid and incisive writing has been a major influence on succeeding generations of academics, practitioners and judges. Drawing on Sawer's writings, oral history interviews and private papers, Michael Coper makes an affectionate biographical sketch of this outstanding scholar and warm and genial human being. In particular, he explores how Sawer's scholarship stands up today, when so much has changed in the legal and political landscape; what is enduring and what is transient in a life's work; and what lessons we can draw when we look at law and life through the lens of biography. Emer de Vattel (1714-1767) published his Droit des gens ou Principes de la loi naturelle appliqués à la conduite et aux affaires des Nations et des Souverains in 1758. The success of this work was immediate. His internationalist doctrine, the identification of the fundamental laws of States, that are sovereignty, independence and equality have become basic notions of international law. The aim of the present paper is to reconstruct the Swiss historical and cultural context where Vattel lived and worked, furnishing his biographical profile and scrutinizing the origin of his Droit des gens. To examine the concepts and strategies of Armenian self-defense that the Armenian Revolutionary Federation adopted around 1900, this paper draws mainly on the most important autobiographical text of an Armenian fedayi, Ruben Ter Minasians seven-volume Memoirs of an Armenian Revolutionary. It argues that Ruben uses different episodes recalling not only his own, but also other famous and legendary fighters experiences to develop and justify his position of fundamental pragmatism, which he defends against any touch of idealism or notions of honor and pride, against any considerations for possible losses, human weakness, and leniency or consideration of personal bonds. Since the party is the means for, and condition of, a successful struggle, its needs, laws, and authority have to always be put before any other demands and feelings. With this account Ruben indirectly explains the two most difficult and contested decisions of his own career, namely to leave Sasun in 1915 and to organize the expulsion of the Azeri population of the Ararat plain in 1919. A biography of James Plemon Coleman, the former Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, is presented. He was born on March 12, 1947 in Choctaw County, Mississippi and studied at the University of Mississippi. He then enrolled at the George Washington University Law School for the law graduate program. He became the youngest member of the Mississippi Supreme Court in 1950. The article also includes a collection of Coleman's judicial papers of political achieves.

A biography of activist journalist Andrew Jackson (A.J.) Smitherman is presented, with focus given to his work arguing for the equality and improved social conditions of African Americans. He was born in 1883 in Childersburg, Alabama, and worked for the Oklahoma African American newspaper "Muskogee Cimeter" following college. He would later establish his own paper, "The Tulsa Star," and moved to Buffalo, New York, where he founded the newspaper "The Buffalo Star." The Tulsa Race Riots of 1921 are discussed.

Donald S. Miller died over 10 years ago. He was recognized at his demise but has not been covered much in the subsequent literature. He had many important impacts, from being Regional Archaeologist for the U.S. Forest Service in California and Chief Archaeologist at the UCLA Archaeological Survey, to doing important fieldwork, making a significant teaching movie, shaping the careers of many archaeologists, and helping found the SCA. The present paper is a translation of the Chan monk Hongzhi Zhenjue's biography in the Daming gaoseng zhuan (GREAT MING BIOGRAPHIES OF EMINENT MONKS) and includes an introductory essay that places the biography in context. In particular, the introductory essay suggests that the inclusion of Hongzhi's biography in the Daming gaoseng zhuan is important in light of the diminished popularity of the Eminent Monks series and the growing popularity of the Chan hagiographic genres of yulu ('records of sayings') and denglu ('records of the lamps'), which implicitly represented Chan as distinct from other Chinese Buddhist traditions. This paper concerns Arl Walter Fulcher of Terlingua, Texas. The primary emphasis is on his tour in the Army Mobile Veterinary Hospital during World War I and his voluntary service as the Captain of Company C in the Texas State Guard, stationed in Terlingua during World War II. The former period is illuminated through 25 letters written by Fulcher to his family during World War I, documents now housed in Sul Ross' Archives of the Big Bend. The letters started immediately after he left for duty in Europe and ended just days before he arrived home. These letters provide an account of his interactions with his fellow soldiers and the local French residents. A narrative of Fulcher's participation in the Texas State Guard during World War II was constructed by utilizing the Texas State Archives and the Archives of the Big Bend. Among his many accomplishments, his leadership and training style provided a great foundation for non-English speaking recruits to the Texas State Guard. It is noteworthy that many of these Terlingua-based guardsmen went on to serve in the regular United States Army during World War II. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 1915, Keith Murdoch was appointed London manager of the United Cable Service, jointly operated by the Sydney Sun and the Melbourne Herald. On his way to London, he visited and reported on the Australian forces in Gallipoli. From his London base, he subsequently operated as a "semi-official" war correspondent, providing both cable services and regular feature articles for the Australian press. His approach to journalism was greatly influenced by the wartime conditions under which he worked and by his mentor, Lord Northclife, proprietor of the London Times and Daily Mail. Drawing on the Keith Murdoch Papers held at the National Library of Australia and on Murdoch's journalism of this period, this article explores Murdoch's developing "journalistic vision" and his desire to influence public opinion in furtherance of the war effort. This article examines the influences that transformed young New Zea-landjournalist Stella Allan (1871-1962) from a committed socialist and feminist to a conservative establishment figure who edited the women's pages of the Melbourne Argus for three decades. It considers the stultifying effects of women's page journalism and the influence of a notably conservative paper on her social and political views. It also uncovers biographical information pointing out social and gender pressures at the beginning of the 20th century that led her to conform to the conservative views of her husband, an Oxford-educated former Foreign Office diplomat. This paper explores the career of an unusual eighteenth-century innovator. George Boswell was not only the author of the first detailed and practical guide to the creation, lay-out and management of water meadows, but is also a good example of a working farmer eager to incorporate new ideas, new crops and improved implements into his farming practice. His advice was sought and his expertise valued by several leading agriculturalists during the late eighteenth century, including Arthur Young and Robert Bakewell. His letters to George Culley provide a great deal of information about farming methods and conditions in Dorset, and his contributions to the Bath and West Agricultural Society give details of his construction of and experiments with ploughs, rakes, drills and threshing machines. Vito Marcantonio, though now almost forgotten, was 'the most radical politician' in Cold War America. This paper focuses on Marcantonio because his political choices reflected the unique choices, achievements, and frustrations of the radical-liberals of his time. As he rose from a working-class family in the poor Italian community of East Harlem to the halls of Congress for his New York City district, Marcantonio was successful because he gained support from the people whose interests he represented and worked for - immigrants, African Americans, the working class, and ideological minorities. His political vision reflected and shared the views of the liberal-radical reformers who worked around the American Labor Party, Popular Front organizations, and New Deal liberalism. Its inner limits as well as attacks from the outside limited the effectiveness of his voice, but his commitment to rights for labor, ethnic minorities and African Americans had a lasting legacy for generations to come. Myron Scholes called Merton H. Miller our Socrates. He was right. Miller (1923-2000) created the leading breakthroughs of Corporate Finance Economics over the last forty-plus years. The legendary Modigliani-Miller theorems of leverage and dividend policy irrelevance to the aggregate value of the firm, the battles he brought on for the futures markets, his views railing against restrictive regulatory interventions, and the pillars he devised to underlie the mainstreams of "post-Millerian" Corporate Finance Economics are among many other things the revelation of his philosophy. This paper explores the relationship between 2 persons much involved in the development of modern epidemiology, Jacob Yerushalmy and Abraham M. Lilienfeld. The formation of that relationship is described and the resulting influences by each individual on the other's professional work are discussed. Interactions between these 2 men contributed to several areas of epidemiologic development, including the effects of misclassification on observational study data, elements of epidemiologic causal inference, population-based linked databases, and the adaptation of statistical techniques by the epidemiology community. A biography of Grigore C. Moisel, Romanian mathematician and Professor at the University of Bucharest, Romania is presented. He was born in Tulcea, with a school training partly in Bucharest. His main teachers were his parents, in which his father was an important historian. He is named a provisional associate of Algebra at the University of Iasi at November 1, 1932. Moreover , at that moment, he was already the author of an important number of scientific papers.

A biography of Albert Einstein is presented. He was born on March 14, 1879 in Germany and received his first instructions at home at the age of five. He then enrolled at Volkschule public school where he consistently got excellent grades. He then studied at the Federal Institute of Technology in Italy. He gained his doctorate degree at the University of Zurich. It is stated that his papers on the theory of relativity nearly revolutionized and changed the world. He died on April 18, 1955.

Since 2005 Professor Antonio Bayés de Luna and Dr Miquel Fiol have invited experts in electrocardiography to consensus meeting in Barcelona and Mallorca. She enrolled in Max Reinhardt's Drama School, became an extra for stage performances, and created paper silhouette in her teenage years. Hans Cürlis, and Carl Koch from the Institute for Cultural Research helped her made her first animation movies.

A biography of Timothy Dexter, a wealthy resident of Newburyport, Massachusetts given the mock title of Lord, is presented. It examines sources of his wealth, including his work in leather dressing, his speculation in Continental currency, or paper money issued by the U.S. Continental Congress, and his marriage to Elizabeth Lord, a wealthy widow. The author notes Dexter's ownership of land in Chester, New Hampshire and comments on what he calls Dexter's vanity, superstition, and ostentation.

A biography of Jean-Paul Zolésio, a pianist and mathematician, is presented. He was born in Monaco on June 29, 1947 and gained his baccalauréat from the Lycée Albert 1er in June 1966. He pursued a career in mathematics. He is the author and coauthor of several papers and influential books as well as became a regular organizer of various key meetings, conferences and workshops for mathematicians. A list of supervised theses is offered.

A biography of metal finisher and electroplater William Blum is presented. Blum was born in Philadelphia on December 28, 1881. After attending local schools, he obtained a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated in Chemistry. Under the guidance of Dr. Edgar Fobs Smith, he specialized in electroanalysis and thus his interest in electroplating started. He had won numerous awards and published several notable scientific papers.

The article profiles Tim Coates, managing director of Sherratt & Hughes, in England. The objective of Coates is that the public libraries would be even higher standard of service compare to the achievement in commercial book selling for five years. He is studied at the University College, Oxford and University of Stirling. He liked to read such as the 19th-century government papers and listening to his son's cello, a large stringed instrument. He was married to Bridget Cave and have two sons, who were Sam and Olly.

A biography is presented for Sir William Osler, born in Ontario in 1849, son of an Anglican missionary. He studied medicine at the Toronto School of Medicine and McGill University, studied in Europe, and was named Professor of the Institutes of Medicine at McGill at age 25. He then taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins medical school, then was appointed Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University in 1905. He died in 1919. His book collection was the foundation of the Osler Library at McGill.

A biography of Tennessee senator and Speaker of the Senate Colonel Edward Ward is presented. It examines his relationship with U.S. president Andrew Jackson, his involvement in negotiations over the Tennessee-Kentucky border, and his role in developing education. The author considers Ward's death following a gun fight with brothers Lafayette Jones, Chamberlayne Jones, Caesar Augustus Jones, and Achilles Jones.
