Early Soviet society featured clear nutrition guidelines and a robust plan for streamlined logistics in food processing, distribution, and consumption, all of which was aimed at building a stronger state through a virtuous transformation of calories into labor power. Such rhetoric appeared even in children's illustrated books, such as Vladimir Maiakovskii and Nikolai Kupreianov's Story of Petia, Fat Boy, and of Sima, Who is Skinny (1926). This paper shows how in the 1920s authors such as Viktor Shklovskii and Iurii Olesha turned that rhetoric on its head and pushed back against the early Soviet obsession with planning and mastering nature and the human body by employing metaphors of food, digestion, and agriculture. In Shklovskii's memoirs A Sentimental Journey (1923) and Knight's Move (1923) and Olesha's novel Envy (1927), the October Revolution itself emerges as a metabolic process on a vast scale: prerevolutionary aesthetic threads, motifs, and concepts are broken down and processed, reassembled, and repurposed into a seemingly new society and worldview, in which the individual original components are still recognizable. In Egypt's 2012 elections, the Muslim Brotherhood came to power after many years of repression, an unprecedented victory for the country's most active opposition movement. The Brotherhood's journey can be divided into several stages. One of the most important, which has not received enough attention, is the imprisonment of many of its major figures. Long before the coup that overthrew President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, the Arab nationalist President Gamal Abdel Nasser brutally put down the movement with mass arrests. The Brotherhood's members dominated Egypt's prisons, but they were far from the only activists in the system, which also held communists, Zionists, and other Jewish prisoners. This article uses the memoirs of the incarcerated enemies of the state to examine the struggles of these groups inside Egypt's prisons and show how the institutions served as platforms to promote the ideological struggle against the regime. In A Confession, a memoir of his philosophical midlife crisis, Tolstoy recounts falling into despair after coming to believe that his life, and for that matter all human life, is meaningless and absurd. Although Tolstoy's account of the origin and phenomenology of his crisis is widely regarded as illuminating, his response to the crisis, namely, embracing a religious tradition that he had previously dismissed as "irrational," "incomprehensible," and "mingled with falsehood" seems unpromising, at best. Nevertheless, I argue, Tolstoy's account of his response makes a valuable contribution to contemporary thought about the meaning and absurdity of life. I begin by drawing on classic discussions in the philosophical literature, and on Tolstoy's memoir, in order to characterize the problem of meaning and the problem of the absurd, and to clarify the relation between these problems. I then draw on Tolstoy's account of his response to his crisis in order to characterize a form of faith in our deepest values. I argue that such faith supplies one important part of the story concerning how we might respond to the problem of the absurd — a part that has been overlooked by more recent discussions of these issues. How is what we believe related to how we act? That depends on what we mean by 'believe'. On the one hand, there is what we're sure of: what our names are, where we were born, whether we are sitting in front of a screen. Surety, in this sense, is not uncommon — it does not imply Cartesian absolute certainty, from which no possible course of experience could dislodge us. But there are many things that we think that we are not sure of. For example, you might think that it will rain sometime this month, but not be sure that it will. Both what we're sure of and what we think have important normative connections to action. But the connections are quite different. This paper explores these issues with respect to assertion, inquiry, and decision making. Large‐scale evasion of the requirements of the law is a substantial part of the interaction between citizen and state under authoritarian regimes. Forced to exist within a coordinate grid established against their will, people routinely play games with the state with the goal of minimizing the hardships of life. Tactics of covert resistance are not necessarily politically motivated by conscious opposition to the regime. Instead, these are a matter of accommodation and survival. It is precisely these popular illegalities that, paradoxically, do not so much weaken a system intended to achieve full implementation of its instructions, but instead strengthen it to a certain degree. Evasion serves as a safeguard against social burnout, replete with unpredictable reactions born of desperation. This article examines practices of mass illegality via examples of evasion of labor obligations in the Soviet Union during the war with Nazi Germany. It analyzes instances that primarily involved peasants, especially women, who predominated in the Soviet rear areas after the men were conscripted into the army. This discriminated‐against and uneducated majority rarely enters historians' field of vision, which concentrates on the diaries and memoirs of the educated, urban part of the Soviet population. This article presents the memoirs of Andreas Bruce, a Swedish man that was assigned female sex at birth and later re‐assigned sex as a male hermaphrodite. His memoirs, written by the end of the nineteenth century, are unique. They exhibit a rare example of what life could be like for gender transgressors during the nineteenth century. According to the memoirs, Bruce's transition and legal gender recognition was the source of some attention, but once he had gained a certificate of hermaphroditism and a male first name, his masculinity seldom seems to have been contested. A major broadcaster on both radio and television, Eric Sevareid published a memoir of his youth and wartime experiences in 1946. Not So Wild a Dream devoted considerable attention to the complicated emotional registers of male identity. The tensions between physical and mental labour, the revelation or concealment of personal feelings and the relationship between individual autonomy and community responsibility suffused Sevareid's recollections of youth and early manhood. The situational quality of his masculinity and the confessional imperative of his life writing contributes to the complex hermeneutics and intersectionalities of gender and history. The graphic memoir Notas al pie (2017) written by Argentinian Nacha Vollenweider includes an illustration which reinterprets an image from the Nueva corónica y buen gobierno, a colonial document written by Quechua nobleman Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala around 1615, when Peru was under Spanish rule. From 1870 to the fall of the tsarist autocracy, the political prisons of the Romanov regime were filled with the sound of tapping. This was "knocking language" (perestukivanie)–a coded system of knocks and taps used by incarcerated Russian revolutionaries to communicate with one another through the walls of their solitary cells. This article tells the first scholarly history of this medium–using prison archives and radical memoirs to reveal its development in the prisons of the Peter and Paul Fortress, its varied forms and uses, and its pathways of diffusion and transmission. In doing so, the present text seeks not only to give a new empirical account of an understudied practice of carceral subversion. It also attempts to locate knocking language within the larger discursive landscape of the Russian revolutionary tradition–investigating how the specific ways in which this prison alphabet was wielded and understood reverberate within this period's considerations of self‐narration, radical struggle, and political agency. This visual memoir probes the tensions and contradictions that inflect the commodity‐based relationship between a farmer and his cattle on an Irish farm. A methodological exploration of how to attend to the politics of care that animate multispecies relationships on the farm, this article examines relations of intimacy, care, and contradiction materialized in the structural manipulation of bodies for economic purposes. The attentive focus on the everyday encounters between John and his cattle unearths how affective and conflicting multispecies entanglements mediate the farming of animals for food through rhythms of care, the spirit of the gift, and the logic of sacrifice. Summary: This blended genre piece politicizes place through poems, narrative, and musical mash‐ups. It uses ethnography, memoir, and spoken‐word song, a creative technique I call autobricolage. Refusing conventions that create immediate access to meaning, this narrative allows me to present a world in motion and time as non‐linear. Sacred temporality disrupts ordinary instances of time and place and enables the erasure of colonial inscriptions. My returns to and reflections on Borneo life and Dusun kin decolonize and re‐voice a living history. As a metaphor for death, loss, and illness, Michael Jackson is included in my title to express the lure of popular culture in Borneo's villages. This inclusion shatters the norms constituted in the packaging of cultural heritage and shows how things have a life of their own beyond the West. Harris returned to the Churchills to describe the relationship between Marlborough and Sidney Godolphin, the latter as lord treasurer providing the vital backing at home which sustained Marlborough's military successes in Europe. This was followed, in 2002, by what is almost certainly Harris's most impressive book, I Transformations of Love: The Friendship of John Evelyn and Margaret Godolphin i , for which she was awarded one of the Wolfson history prizes for 2004. Best known for her three major biographical studies of leading figures in late Stuart Britain, Harris was a curator in the Department of Manuscripts at the British Library at a period when it was making a truly remarkable series of acquisitions in her specialist area. Genres of written communication do not take place in a vacuum; rather they are fundamentally influenced by historical context and socio‐political circumstance. In recent years, the political memoir genre in Australia has moved away from its tradition of personalised narrative towards a more assertive mode of historical representation. Drawing on empirical and oral history research, this article examines recent alterations in the genre as manifest in six political memoirs produced by senior members of the Rudd–Gillard Labor government. I conclude that Australia's embittered and combative political culture has driven changes in the aesthetic and epistemological features of the genre itself. This research demonstrates that the "trust deficit" embedded in contemporary democracies is manifest not only in the daily ephemera of public discourse, but also in long‐form modes and genres of political communication. The future of primates depends on conservationists in primate range countries having the education and opportunities needed to facilitate conservation efforts. However, most primates are found in countries where conservation is underfunded. Rwanda is home to 14 primate species, with three being listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Their remaining native habitats are scarce, highly fragmented, and surrounded by high human densities. Lacking education opportunities and the loss of qualified individuals following decades of political instability created a need for well‐trained conservationists to tackle conservation challenges in Rwanda. The Memoirs Program, a science capacity‐building partnership between Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (DFGF), University of Rwanda (UR), the Rwanda Development Board, and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, aims to train the next generation of Rwandan conservationists. Annually, the Memoirs Program provides 10–12 top students from the UR Conservation Biology undergraduate program the opportunity to conduct senior research projects (Memoirs) at DFGF addressing conservation issues in and around Rwanda's protected areas. Students receive one‐on‐one supervision by DFGF scientists and affiliates to supplement UR mentorship, along with targeted teaching modules that reinforce and complement UR curricula. In continuation of the Memoirs Program, participants are offered professional development, employment opportunities, and support to publish their research in peer‐reviewed journals. Since inception of the Program in 2003, 123 students have participated with 83% being employed or pursuing higher education degrees in conservation‐related fields in Rwanda and the region. Pre‐ and post‐training comparison of oral presentation skills, one of the teaching modules, involving 22 students demonstrated increased post‐training performance. The Memoirs Program represents an effective partnership between the government, an international conservation non‐governmental organization, and a public higher‐learning institution in a developing country to support high‐performing students to become tomorrow's conservation leaders. This model could be replicated within Rwanda and in other regions of the world. This essay responds to Peter J. Stein's 2019 memoir, A Boy's Journey: From Nazi‐Occupied Prague to Freedom in America, and his December 2020 essay in The Forum, "Biography, Trauma, Holocaust, and the Sociological Eye" (Stein 2020). Underscoring the resonance between sociology and literature, I use Stein's work as a springboard for identifying four parallels between memoir's capacities and sociology's: (1) capturing the role and weight of contingency in human life, (2) offering audiences a window onto worlds they cannot experience firsthand, (3) cultivating "humane sympathy" (Abbott 2007), especially by probing "meta‐feelings" (Pugh 2013), and (4) fueling the imagination. Summary: The very nature of fieldwork constructs the conditions for "exceptional experience." Learning to inhabit an unfamiliar world and operate outside one's normal frame of reference makes one vulnerable. The "participant observer" is inevitably changed. This may be especially true when the effort to bridge perspectives involves experimentation of a kind that not only engages the researcher in intense and intimate inquiry but also entangles her as an inextricable part of it. My investigation of the cryptic practice of divination in West Africa was such an entanglement. My memoir, Ask for the Road, is about my fieldwork on divination in Côte d'Ivoire—an investigation that, through the seers' uncannily accurate readings, quickly turned into an exploration of my haunting past in that country. The diviners' readings forced me to revisit the demise of my former marriage to an Ivoirian man and its continued hold on me. "The Boiling Cauldron," a chapter from the memoir, is about a meeting with one of those diviners and a disturbing encounter that helped me decide to take leave of the past once and for all, and claim a new direction. This article describes the psychotherapy practice of physician John G. Gehring and places it in historical context. Forgotten today, Gehring was a highly sought‐after therapist from the 1890s to the 1920s by prominent figures in the arts, sciences, business, and law. He practiced a combination of work therapy, suggestion, and autosuggestion that has similarities to Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Behavioral Activation. Using biographies, memoirs, and archival records, the details of Gehring's work are reconstructed and the reasons for its success are analyzed. While there has been significant discussion of the intertwined roles of mobility and identity, little has been written about these two factors in relation to an important third factor, dress. This paper examines dress and identity within two lifestyle migration memoirs, as forms of media such as these create socially situated imagined places where readers can explore new lives and ways of being. Using a culturally oriented framework to examine the moving parts of mobility, identity and dress within text and place, this paper engages with Carol Tulloch's theory that styling the body is self‐telling, whereby dress reveals autobiographical details about the self through clothing choices. It argues that moving from one place to another begins a process of change, and that clothes are used to signify this process to others. This paper contributes to understanding the transformative process of migration, particularly as it relates to imaginative explorations associated with texts. It also contributes to another underdeveloped field, the study of dress in rural areas. Its original application of Tulloch's theory along with broader social theories, within a discussion of lifestyle migration discourse and dress, means that it differs from previous migration research. This paper discusses lifestyle migration and resulting identity changes as demonstrated in two literary texts. The texts, as do media more generally, provide an important place for readers to imaginatively explore new identities and ways of living that cannot be uncovered in the same way through other methods. Kindertransport memoirs are an invaluable resource providing an insight into the world of child refugees who faced upheaval when separated from their family and friends in 1938/9. This article examines the representation of trauma in memoirs by Vera Gissing (1988), Martha Blend (1995), Edith Milton (2005), and Marion Charles (2013). Investigating the limits of language and the constraints that traumatic memory places upon representation, this article addresses the question of how a traumatic event, which seems to exceed the limits of understanding and even of language, can be represented by the author. An examination of these memoirs reveals how children of the Kindertransport attempt to formulate knowledge and a narrative of their past – a requirement of the literary memoir genre – yet are simultaneously challenged by the unrepresentable nature of traumatic experience. Using two books written by former mercenaries or private military personnel, "Cry Havoc" by Simon Mann and "Civilian Warriors: The Inside Story of Blackwate and the Unsurng Heroes of the War on Terror" by Erik Prince, the author considers the cultural positioning the authors used to define and defend their actions in their memoirs. Topics include the rise in the use of private military personnel on a global level; private militarized security companies including Blackwater USA, Sandline International, and Executive Outcomes; and the literary microgenre of mercenary memoirs.

Emotions and feelings overwhelm mnemonic practices of any collective with traces of violence in its history. The violent history has become the means for the Iranian regime to regulate the nation's political consciousness. The regime formulates the political consciousness by way of politics of memory and enforcing a master narrative drawn from Shi'i history. I trace elicited emotions, within the war veterans' memoirs, to explain feelings and consciousness in the realm of situated bodies. By way of those emotions, the article outlines an anthropology of emotions that rejects universal codes of emotions and instead proposes following an embodied consciousness through emotions along with histories that evoke them. My argument broadens Sarah Ahmed's idea of history and emotions to arrive at the assemblage of mnemonic practices in post‐war Iran and advocate a historically informed anthropology of emotions. Summary: This article argues the usefulness of the culturally pervasive and impactful genre of graphic memoir for addressing gaps in the anthropologies of kinship and personhood. It identifies a key figure in some sections of U.S. society: the "adult child." Adult childness emerges from the graphic memoirs discussed here as when a person finds themselves particularly conscious of having (or having had) parents. To the perennially debated question of what connects kin in a U.S. context the article proposes: the past. Key facets of U.S. personhood and kinship are founded on the tenet that what happens in the lives of one's parents and one's childhood go a long way to explaining who an adult is. In this article, the authors, two teacher educators and three high school teachers, examine the impact of a professional development seminar held in spring 2017. In that seminar, participants read and composed brief autobiographical sketches in a variety of media and learned a new lexicon for multimodal close reading, composition, and design. Using narrative inquiry, the three coauthoring teachers reflected on the importance and anxiety of being positioned as multimodal writers, and their subsequent interaction with multimodal mentor texts in their classrooms. The authors contend that teachers must move beyond conventional textual autobiography and memoir. Expanding teachers' comfort with multimodal mentor texts is essential for their and their students' literacy development. Building a lexicon for close reading and composing with multimodal texts can inspire students and empower teachers to invite autobiographical writing into their instruction and teach autobiography and memoir as acts of design. Reading secondary data from military memoirs of recent conflicts through the prism of scholarship on emotional labour, this paper discusses feeling rules fostered by the total institution of military service. The military is a significant context for such analysis, given that it socializes its personnel into mastering the practices and skills of lethal violence for combat operations. It is, moreover, a total institution, and the disculturation new recruits must endure creates fertile ground for the inculcation of a specific emotional regime. Further, unlike most other service occupations, the military is both male‐dominated and highly masculine. The paper also makes a case for using memoirs in the study of emotional labour. Being examples of what we call identity writing, they offer different insights to those we might attain through other methods. Indeed, we argue that memoirs provide a fruitful source for future organization studies research into the emotional regime of the military especially. Third, our discussion expands the concept of emotional labour in that the emotional regime the memoirists index: is not undertaken for a specific group of customers; entails a distinctive range of emotions; and involves the conscious cultivation of gendered communities of coping among soldiers. The historiography of the First World War has become well-established branch of contemporary history in its own right. In the past years, it has analysed in depth a boundless number of issues on the basis of diaries and memoirs written by soldiers during and after their experiences in the trenches. These studies have improved our knowledge of the war and of the soldiers' reactions to their tragic familiarity with death. Recently, historians have focused on the social aspects of the Great War and its aftermath. In particular, they have considered war memorials, life behind the frontline, practical mobilization of a national system, and supply problems both in the trenches and within civil societies. However, in this excellent historical research the lion's share is made up of British, French and German diaries, memoirs and war books. Experiences lived by soldiers of different nationalities are known to a lesser degree. In this article I will try to explain how, in the years between the two world wars, Italian war veterans described to their reading public what they experienced during the conflict. I believe that a general analysis of Italian interventionism, of the expectations it created and the disappointments over a conflict that was showing the nation's unpreparedness, still remains of great importance. The present article will not only show the extent to which Italian war literature was permeated by piety and emotion towards comrades and, sometimes, enemies who shared the devastating ordeal of the trenches, it will also highlight how it was pervaded by political implications that were peculiar to Italian social and political conditions of the time. Using the space created by the land invasions, over the last ten years or so there has been a proliferation of exile memoirs written by white Zimbabweans living in the diaspora, which foreground colonial nostalgia and postcolonial anxiety. This article profiles elements of this latest wave of 'white (female) writing', arguing that writers such as Alexandra Fuller construct their own personal narratives based on an extremely teleological and narrow interpretation of the history of Zimbabwe. It is argued that memoirs are used as a mechanism to uphold an idealised (i.e. powerful) white identity, because whites' current 'destabilised' identity has resulted in them clinging to a seemingly utopian version of both what it meant to be white and the past.
