Abstract

Ayuba Suleiman Diallo holds our gaze in his portrait by William Hoare (Figure 1). Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Collection, American Revolution Museum at Yorktown gl A second canvas portrait of Diallo, probably made by Hoare though there is no textual account of its making, depicts Diallo on a blousy pastel backdrop of rolling English hills with pink-tinged clouds. Hoare's portraits of Diallo can be seen as capturing the "twoness" of Diallo when in American and British society. William Hoare engraved a version of his oil portrait of Diallo as a frontispiece for Thomas Bluett's I Some Memoirs of the Life of Job i , published in November 1734, five months after Diallo's departure.
