The cultural-linguistic education of the deaf has been minimally incorporated into the Chilean educational system. It has only been in the past decade that deaf adults have been included in classrooms with didactic approaches centered on hearing culture. This research aims to investigate deaf narratives to develop a pedagogical proposal grounded in deaf epistemologies. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 15 deaf individuals using Chilean Sign Language. The data collected was analyzed using Atlas.ti software, employing open and axial coding. The findings indicate that a pedagogical approach for the deaf should encompass the following elements: deaf identity, Chilean Sign Language, and a safe educational environment. The conclusions suggest that these pedagogical proposals should integrate a pedagogy with a deaf experiential perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The advance in educational inclusion has visualized the presence of deaf students with their own culture and language in regular education establishments. At the national and international level, a series of educational devices have been created for the acquisition of the vehicular language of migrant students, which from a socio-anthropological perspective has not been visualized for the deaf educational community. The objective of this article is to propose a device for deaf students in educational establishments. As a result, through a theoretical analysis, a Hospitality Device for Deaf Students (DIHOPES) is proposed with 4 dimensions: Culture of Hospitality, Welcome Protocols, Specialized Professionals and Language Immersion Classroom. As a reflection, the articulation of the dimensions of this device is based on the principle of hospitality and the acceptance of deaf otherness that seeks to be recognized as part of the educational community. This article analyzes the formal strategies underlying the formation of compounds in Colombian sign language, based on a corpus collected between 2018 and 2022 with deaf signers from Medellín, Colombia. It is a descriptive study that compares compositional patterns with those of other sign languages, such as those presented in Pfau (2016) and Meir et al. (2010). In the corpus, we find sequential and simultaneous compounds. Sequentials may present changes in their constituents, which imply a formal fusion, such as the shortening of one of the signs, the anticipation of the passive hand, and the extension of the passive hand, a strategy not usually mentioned in the literature. We have noted the existence of endocentric and exocentric compounds. In sequential endocentrics, the core is performed first and then the determinant. In simultaneous endocentrics, the tendency observed is that the passive hand performs the core and the active hand performs the determinant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We review the literature on the convergence between educational and sociocultural aspects and their relationship with the development of cognitive skills in deaf people. We present a brief overview of the neuroanatomical layers that underlie cognitive processes and the differences between deaf and hearing people due to sensory deprivation. Most of the research indicated that there are differences in some cognitive functions, although there is no agreement whether this is due to factors such as sociocultural context, late language acquisition, or brain rewiring. Finally, the need to study the educational, social and individual contexts where Deaf children develop in an interdisciplinary way is discussed in order to propose tools that promote their optimal cognitive development. Introduction: it has been shown that health services offered to deaf people present a limitation in patient/health professional communication, mainly due to their lack of knowledge of sign language. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of sign language training to decrease social distance and increase the cultural competencies of the physical therapist, during the initial interview with deaf people. Material and method: quantitative study with a quasi-experimental design. A virtual training of two consecutive Saturdays totalling 4.5 hours was developed and facilitated for eleven physical therapists on the deaf community and sign language in the physical therapy setting. Participants were assessed through a video in which they practiced several questions from the initial interview in physical therapy using signs. A pretest and a post-test were administered to measure knowledge, attitudes, sensitivity, beliefs, and skills before and after training. Results: the results of the study showed an increase in the correct answers for the knowledge post-test (p = 0.005) and there were changes in attitudes (p = 0.032), sensitivity (p = 0.005), beliefs (p = 0.005) and skills (p = 0.003) of the participants. Conclusion: the training was effective in increasing the cultural competencies of the physical therapist group to the deaf community and decreasing the social distance between physical therapists and these patients. Deaf people are at risk of contracting Sexually Transmitted Infections and having unplanned pregnancies, in addition to having fewer programs that fit the communicative characteristics of this population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an intervention program assisted by a web-based application aimed at promoting condom use. A quasi-experimental design with an intervention and control group was used, in which 32 young deaf people participated. The intervention consisted of four face-to-face sessions that were supported by the web application, which contains videos and review dynamics. Increases were seen in the level of knowledge about STIs and condom use, in perceived self-efficacy for correct condom use, and in the demonstrated ability to put on and take off a condom on a penis for teaching. Objective: To describe the beliefs and practices for health care of deaf people in Antioquia, in order to identify health education needs of this population. Methods: qualitative study with ethnographic techniques framed in a participatory action research; 22 semi-structured interviews and 4 focus groups were conducted with deaf people, in meetings mediated by an official interpreter of the Colombian Sign Language, of which video and audio were recorded for later transcription and analysis. Results: Complaints related to the language barrier that prevents them from knowing about health care emerged; beliefs and practices acquired at home and with peers about sexual and reproductive health, mental health, and lifestyles. The participants expressed concerns about care, health and illness that have not been addressed clearly and in their own language. Conclusions: Deaf people demand quality health care education under a differential approach, which will contribute to their autonomy, self-determination and the effective enjoyment of the right to health. Introduction : Deaf individuals in Colombia possess the distinctive trait of communicating with others through Colombian Sign Language (LSC) and encounter communication challenges when accessing health services due to their affiliation with a linguistic and cultural minority. Objectives : To describe the experiences of Deaf individuals in communicative processes during dental care. Methodology: A qualitative study was conducted involving 32 Deaf individuals, both male and female, of legal age, who participated in individual and group interviews. Throughout these interviews, participants shared instances of their experiences in dental consultations. Data were coded, categorized, and relationship maps were developed for analysis. Results were communicated to participants through educational material in sign language. Results : Participants narrate the challenges faced in autonomously accessing health services, as well as their experience of being uninformed during care. They also highlight opportunities for receiving dignified and quality care, necessitating transformations in services, healthcare professionals, and higher education institutions within the context of Deaf culture. Conclusions : Communicative processes in the interaction between dentists and Deaf individuals present an opportunity to better comprehend the Deaf experience in healthcare, question the normalcy in healthcare provision, and recognize the importance of addressing differences. The article "Childhood deafness with associated disabilities (DA+): CODEPEH 2021 recommendations" presents recommendations for the management of deaf children with additional disabilities. The importance of early detection and appropriate treatment of deafness is highlighted, as well as the identification of other variables that can affect language development in these children. Different syndromes and disabilities associated with hearing loss in children are mentioned, such as Down syndrome, Usher syndrome, CHARGE syndrome, Treacher Collins syndrome, Waardenburg syndrome, and deafblindness. The association of hearing loss with autism spectrum disorder and other disabilities such as cognitive delay and cerebral palsy is also discussed. The article addresses the importance of considering associated disabilities in children with hearing loss and how this can affect their language development and communication. The importance of early intervention and interdisciplinary collaboration in the care of these children, as well as support and comprehensive care for families, is also mentioned. The article also analyzes the overlap between children with auditory processing disorders and other developmental disorders, and provides recommendations for early detection and intervention. This study presents the diffculties encountered by journalists in applying media accessibility requirements on the Internet. For its development, 24 journalists who produce digital content and four computer professionals from cybermedia and organizations in charge of developing media technologies were interviewed. The analysis of the results shows that the absence of accessibility knowledge, together with the lack of help that content management systems (CMS) provide to incorporate the established accessibility requirements, are the main causes of the presence of barriers in the digital media for people with disabilities and the elderly. According to the study's participants, the accessibility criteria least frequently used by journalists are textual alternatives to semantic use of color for people who cannot see colors, subtitling of audiovisual content for deaf people, and audio description for blind people. In this article I seek to reflect on certain methodological aspects of ethnographic practice such as the design and application of interviews in fieldwork with deaf people. As researchers, we establish and use predominantly oral communication codes when interacting with the interviewees, taking other forms of communication for granted and without questioning the orality paradigm. This leads us to minorize and make invisible other forms of interaction, communication and participation present in everyday life and not be able to see these other forms as the people interviewed see them. Placing ourselves in the orality paradigm would be biasing the collection of information by using methodological designs and research instruments from the imposition of a hegemonic oralism on certain realities. For this reason, my objective is to show, from my own field experience with deaf people from a Nahua community in the Huasteca of Veracruz, the possibility and need to conduct adequate, pertinent, non-minorizing or excluding interviews. To do this, I analyze in an evaluative and retrospective way what was the design and application of the ethnographic interview and the adaptations and improvements that were necessary or would have been needed. Thus, firstly, I inquire about the epistemological and axiological principles that guided this ethnographic practice, to later address the technical and empirical problems that arose and expose how was the process of adaptation of the interview and what were the main challenges in its application, registration, and epistemic use. The result of this analysis offers us methodological guidelines to make the interview techniques applicable and effective to deaf people from other non-oral forms and codes of communication, which the researcher must recognize, adapt and manage him/herself, with the support of other specialists and with the collaboration of the community in order to understand the people under study on their own terms. In this article, the author reflects on the discrimination and exclusion faced by deaf and disabled people in today's society, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. She highlights the importance of listening to the perspectives of these individuals and valuing their contribution to the civil and ecclesial community. The existence of ableism is mentioned, a form of discrimination based on people's abilities and skills. The author shares her experience as a volunteer sign language interpreter in the deaf community and emphasizes the importance of eliminating ableism to ensure the active participation of people with disabilities in society. She also reflects on the importance of practicing social friendship and eliminating othering towards deaf and disabled people, highlighting indigenous values of kapwa and bukas-palad as a response to Pope Francis' invitation to fraternity and social friendship. Supported by an ethnography conducted between 2018 and 2019 with people —mainly from the Deaf Association of Cali— participating in a deaf community and culture in Cali, this article discusses the relevance of adapting the recording and investigative writing methods to the populations with whom we work. On the one hand, it explores ethnographic methodologies situated within broader discussions related to the anthropology of the senses, sensory ethnography, the problem of representation, the politics of transcription and the use of drawings as a methodological tool. On the other hand, this article gathers ethical reflections on consent, approach, sensitivity to the context, and the positioning assumed in the field, by choosing to position myself not only as an anthropologist or sociologist, but also as a hard of hearing woman. Thus, it is argued that a correct prior reading of the context of the population to be studied enables the construction of methodological and ethical designs that not only actively avoid reproducing denounced historical violence —such as epistemic violence—, but also provide entry points, readings, and analyses that prioritize local and personal experiences of existence, emerging categories, and the body as potential data to understand them. The article presents the ethical and methodological decisions involved in a study conducted from the perspective of an insider ethnographer, focusing on the social, political, and cultural aspects of Deafhood. It is precisely in the exploration of new intersectional and sensorially diverse perspectives that challenge the traditional ableist readings that this text intends to spark the debate on these collective identities that negotiate their existence within the framework of multiculturalism as a stage for the consolidation of enforceable rights. Designing social interventions with an impact on the quality of life of certain groups is one of the achievements of «Young Music Fest», a Spanish music festival accessible to people with hearing disabilities, and they constitute an effective strategy for the creation of experiences since the music directly evokes emotions. With the purpose of integrating different groups, festivals help communities join forces, give rise to a greater sense of belonging and promote accessibility and diversity. By harnessing creativity, music festivals create bonds between residents, evoke their identity, act as social marketing levers, and promote key indicators of quality of life, providing a meeting place for community members and encouraging their participation. This work describes a triangular investigation, composed of an implicit association test, a questionnaire, and a focus group, taking advantage of the synergy of the neuroscientific research, both psychometric, quantitative, and qualitative in nature, and as an approach to a real project that provides new solutions on how to face the crisis of the covid-19 in the field of face-to-face events. The objective of the study was to analyze a set of risk factors for the sexual health of young Mexicans with hearing disabilities. We used a computerized questionnaire with instruments adapted and validated to the deaf population. In 112 young people with an average age of 19.7, we applied the following instruments: sexual communication with parents, parental support and supervision, knowledge about sexually transmitted infections and condom use, sexual practices and sexual abuse. We identified a pattern of sexual risk in sexually active young people, with important proportions that have experienced sexual abuse. Low levels were found in both communication and parental supervision, as well as in knowledge tests. Communication with parents was related to the use of condoms and it was greater in those subjects who have not experienced sexual abuse.
