I argue that the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty can help resolve a long-lasting problem, with continued relevance for philosophy, semiotics and linguistics: the dialectical relationship between pre-verbal consciousness and language. I proceed by reconstructing the development of his thought on the topic from the Phenomenology of Perception to his final writings. From an initial standpoint where language was not differentiated from gesture, Merleau-Ponty moved under the influence of Saussure’s structuralism to distinguish the “diacritical”, opposition-based, structure of the language system from the Gestalt-based nature of perception and bodily expression. At the same time, this system needs to be conceived as already “spoken language” (langage parlé), sedimented from living and expressive “speaking language” (langage parlant), the latter resembling modern conceptions of “languaging”. The dialectical relationship between the two, as well as the ultimately motivating role of non-verbal experience is then analysed by means of the three levels of the Motivation & Sedimentation Model, leading to a clarification of the key notions of expression and sublimation. I propose that by understanding the two as “intertwined” the paradox of their respective primacy can be resolved, alongside with conceiving of language as fundamentally motivated rather than arbitrary, and thus with no fundamental rupture from bodily experience. Dans cet article je soutiens que la philosophie de Merleau-Ponty peut aider à résoudre un problème de longue date, avec une pertinence continue pour la philosophie, la sémiotique et la linguistique : la relation dialectique entre la conscience pré-verbale et le langage. Je procède en reconstruisant le développement de sa pensée sur le sujet depuis la Phénoménologie de la perception jusqu’à ses derniers écrits. D’un point de vue initial où le langage n’était pas différencié du geste, Merleau-Ponty a évolué sous l’influence du structuralisme de Saussure pour distinguer la structure « diacritique », basée sur l’opposition, du système du langage de la nature basée sur la Gestalt de la perception et de l’expression corporelle. En même temps, ce système doit être conçu comme étant déjà un « langage parlé », sédimenté à partir du « langage parlant » vivant et expressif, ce dernier ressemblant aux conceptions modernes du « langagier ». La relation dialectique entre les deux, ainsi que le rôle finalement motivant de l’expérience non verbale, sont ensuite analysés au moyen des trois niveaux du modèle de motivation et de sédimentation, ce qui conduit à une clarification des notions clés d’expression et de sublimation. Je propose qu’en comprenant les deux comme « entrelacés », le paradoxe de leur primauté respective peut être résolu, parallèlement à la conception du langage comme fondamentalement motivé plutôt qu’arbitraire, et donc sans rupture fondamentale avec l’expérience corporelle.

In this thesis, we address various tasks for generating 3D skeletons of humans in motion. The ability to predict and generate human motion has become an important topic in recent years in many domains including self-driving vehicles, animation, and virtual reality. While in recent years deep learning has greatly increased the performance of generative models, the generation of human motion remains an open issue. Even the more recent methods still struggle to generate high-quality human motion. This is due to the need to model both spatial and temporal components and of understanding the interactions of human body parts. The task is also challenging due to the high variability of motions both in terms of time since the same motion can be performed at a different speed, and in terms of space, since the amplitude of motion can vary greatly. Furthermore, the generated 3D motions must be accurate, realistic, and smooth. We propose a new predictive Wasserstein generative adversarial network (GAN) to predict the end of a person's motion. Our predictive network uses the SRVF representation to model human motion and allow the prediction of accurate motion without discontinuities in real-time as shown in our experiments against state-of-the-art methods. We then work on the generation of interaction motions between two persons. We present a new method to generate a reaction motion in response to an action. Unlike the state-of-the-art methods that focus on generating the motion of a single person, we propose Interformer, a Transformer to predict the reaction to an action using the temporal modeling abilities of the Transformer network as well as new skeleton adjacency and interaction distance modules to model the interactions. We compare our results to interaction generation and motion prediction methods and outperform them. We develop a new architecture to generate the motion of two people interacting based on a class label. Our architecture leverages the capabilities of diffusion models, Transformer architecture, and bipartite graph networks. Our results show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art both quantitatively and qualitatively. We propose an application that uses our motion prediction method to allow a virtual agent to predict and recognize a person's motion in non-verbal interactions in a virtual environment. For this purpose, we propose a new 3D motion database captured with a high-quality motion capture system and a depth camera.; Dans cette thèse, nous abordons diverses tâches de génération de squelettes 3D de corps humain en mouvement. La capacité à prédire et générer des mouvements humains est devenue un sujet important dans de nombreux secteurs tel que la conduite de véhicules autonomes, l'animation et la réalité virtuelle. Bien que l'apprentissage profond ait considérablement amélioré les performances des modèles génératifs ces dernières années, la génération de mouvements humains reste un problème ouvert. Les méthodes les plus récentes ont toujours du mal à générer des mouvements humains de bonne qualité. Cela résulte de la nécessité de modéliser les composantes spatiales et temporelles simultanément et de comprendre les interactions entre les différentes parties du corps. La tâche est également difficile en raison de la grande variabilité des mouvements, à la fois en termes de temps, puisque le même mouvement peut être effectué à une vitesse différente, et en termes d'espace, puisque l'amplitude du mouvement peut varier considérablement. De plus les mouvements 3D générés doivent être précis, réalistes et fluides. Nous proposons un nouveau réseau antagoniste génératif (GAN) prédictif de Wasserstein pour prédire la fin du mouvement d'une personne. Notre réseau prédictif utilise une répresentation des courbes appelée SRVF pour modéliser la trajectoires des mouvements humains et permet une prédiction précise, en temps réel, de mouvement sans discontinuités comme le montrent nos expériences. Dans une seconde étape de la thèse nous nous intéressons à la génération des mouvements d'interaction entre deux personnes. Tout d'abord, nous présentons une nouvelle méthode pour générer un mouvement de réaction en réponse à un mouvement d'action. Contrairement aux méthodes de l'état de l'art qui se focalisent sur la génération du mouvement d'une personne, nous proposons Interformer, un Transformer qui génère des mouvements de réaction en utilisant les capacités de modélisation temporelles des réseaux Transformer ainsi que de nouveaux modules pour modéliser les interactions. Nos résultats montrent que l'approche Interformer surpasse les méthodes de l'état de l'art. Ensuite nous développons une nouvelle architecture pour générer le mouvement d'interaction de deux personnes en fonction de la classe du mouvement. Notre architecture exploite les capacités des modèles de diffusion, de l'architecture Transformer et l'apprentissage de graphes bipartis. Nos résultats montrent que notre méthode surpasse l'état de l'art quantitativement et qualitativement. Nous proposons une application qui utilise la méthode de prédiction du mouvement afin de permettre à un agent virtuel de prédire et de reconnaître le mouvement d'une personne dans le cadre des interactions non-verbales dans un environnement virtuel. Pour cela nous avons proposé une nouvelle base de données de mouvement 3D capturée avec un système de capture de mouvement de haute qualité et une caméra de profondeur.

By creating two versions of the latter, using different pieces of music, the author demonstrates that the intention and imagination of the performer determines the affective expression of the gestures.

In this diploma thesis, a prototype of a natural user interface concept using DepthAI is presented. DepthAI is an embedded device capable of running complex computer vision algorithms independently, efficiently and with low power consumption. Our interface concept uses DepthAI to run pre-trained convolutional neural networks for face and hand detection. Face and hand positions are then interpreted as gestures, which are used to navigate the tree structure the interface runs on. To evaluate our system in a real-world information display scenario, a group of volunteers was asked to participate. Their feedback was predominantly positive which confirms the feasibility of the presented concept. V okviru te diplomske naloge je predstavljen prototip zasnove naravnega uporabniškega vmesnika, ki uporablja DepthAI, vgrajeno napravo, na kateri lahko neodvisno, učinkovito in z nizko porabo energije tečejo kompleksni algoritmi računalniškega vida. Zasnova vmesnika uporablja DepthAI za zaganjanje vnaprej treniranih konvolucijskih nevronskih mrež, ki zaznavajo obraze in roke. Nato so medsebojni položaji obrazov in rok interpretirani kot geste, uporabljene za navigacijo po drevesni strukturi vmesnika. Zasnova vmesnika je bila s pomočjo skupine prostovoljcev ovrednotena na podlagi prototipa informacijskega zaslona, ki je bil ustvarjen kot implementacija zasnove. Povratne informacije prostovoljcev so bile večinsko pozitivne, kar potrjuje izvedljivost in uporabnost predstavljene zasnove v praksi.

This paper explores selected images from the Salpêtrière Hospital that were later featured in L'Iconographie photographique de la Salpêtrière. It then compares these images to a nude series of photos of the dancer Claire Bauroff, taken by Viennese photographer Trude Fleischmann in 1925, in which Bauroff’s movements are seemingly impregnated with the hysterical gestures of Charcot’s patients at the Salpêtrière. Hereby, I argue that there are distinct continuities between the exaggerated postures in the Salpêtrière photographs and in Fleischmann’s images of Bauroff. To support this argument, I employ the concept of “pathos formula” posited by German art historian Aby Warburg. Cet article a pour objectif d’analyser trois planches issues de l’Iconographie photographique de la Salpêtrière et de les mettre en regard de trois photographies de nu, représentant la danseuse Claire Bauroff, prises par Trude Fleischmann à Vienne en 1925. Le but est de relever les similitudes entre ces deux corpus et la reprise puis transformation des gestes hystériques opérée par Fleischmann et Bauroff. Pour étayer mon analyse, je m’appuierai sur le concept de formule de pathos (Pathosformel) développé par l’historien de l’art Aby Warburg.

In this text I situate gesture within film and media studies, introducing the centrality of this notion from modernity onwards, explaining the structural connection of its analysis and the mechanisms featuring cinema, and giving an account of the main existing resources covering this field. Employing this as a basis, I propose to read gesture as a ‘blissful promise’. To do so, I examine a set of key characteristics that build towards my definition by putting gesture in relation with temporality and continuity, theory and practice, resistance, pleasure, and reconciliation.

International audience; The question of the context and its process, contextualisation, is considered through two perspectives, the reseacher’s one and the mathematics or science in french language teacher’s one. Our article presents two dinstinct reflections, one about the context as reseacher’s tool and one about context as a teacher’s resource. Our reflection is based on our own current research about mathematics and science teachers using French inprivate confessional schools in Cairo and Alexandria. Those two perspectives are linked as a focal lengths set. In a first step, the context takes place in the wide shot, as a required plasticity to comprehend the issue of such a social phenomenon as teaching/learning of a foreign language. A reflection about how to qualifiy the context in the field of didactic of the french language will follow. In a second part, by zooming on a classroom and on the act of teaching, we will identify the teaching gesture as contextualisation gestures, which use the context to make sense for students.; La question du contexte et de la contextualisation est envisagée selon deux angles de vue, celui du chercheur en sociodidactique et celui de l’enseignant en langue seconde. Notre contribution propose deux réflexions distinctes sur le contexte comme outil pour l’agir du chercheur et comme ressource pour l’agir de l’enseignant. Nous appuyons nos réflexions sur notre démarche actuelle de recherche concernant l’agir des enseignants de mathématiques et de sciences en français des écoles confessionnelles à Alexandrie et au Caire. Ces deux angles de vue s’imbriquent selon une logique de focales. Dans une première partie, le plan large pose la plasticité nécessaire du contexte pour appréhenderun phénomène social tel que l’enseignement/apprentissage des langues, lequel sera suivi par une réflexion sur le processus relativement récent de requalification de la notion de contexte dans la didactique de la langue française. Dans une seconde partie, en focalisant sur la classe et l’agir enseignant, le plan rapproché invite à identifier des gestes enseignants comme des gestes de contextualisation, qui s’ancrent dans un contexte pour produire du sens et transmettre des savoirs disciplinaires dans un milieu signifiant pour les élèves

La recherche est centrée sur les gestes que le roi ne doit surtout pas faire afin de conserver son autorité divine.

International audience; In both France and abroad, musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) remain the most widespread occupational diseases. The scientific literature has established that links exist between the occurrence of MSD and the professional gesture. The aim of this paper is to show how biomechanical analysis helps to create intervention tools implemented in a methodological framework in clinical activity with a view to preventing MSD through analysis of the gesture. The aim of this paper is to analyse how an intervention was conducted within the general methodological framework of occupational psychology using activity-clinic research based on professional gesture analysis and it also benefited from interdisciplinary co-operation with biomechanics. The interdisciplinary methodology employed in relation to eight gravediggers consisted of different steps that included a detailed analysis of the muscular activity of the shoulder and back muscles. The results show that the interdisciplinary methodology makes it possible to widen the potential development zone of the gesture in the gravediggers’ activity by stimulating their professional discussions. The creation of visibility and discussion in the profession of inter- and intra-individual variability has opened up the professional world to new forms of action to prevent MSD.; En France et à l’international, les troubles musculo-squelettiques (TMS) restent les maladies professionnelles les plus répandues. La littérature scientifique a établi l’existence de liens entre la survenue des TMS et la réalisation des gestes en situation de travail. L’objectif de cet article est de montrer comment l’analyse biomécanique participe à la création d’outils d’intervention mis en œuvre dans un cadre méthodologique en clinique de l’activité dans une optique de prévention des TMS se basant sur l’analyse du geste. La méthodologie interdisciplinaire mise en œuvre auprès de huit fossoyeurs comprend plusieurs étapes incluant une analyse de l’activité musculaire des muscles de l’épaule et du dos laquelle est utilisée comme support à des autoconfrontations. Les résultats montrent que la méthodologie interdisciplinaire permet d’ouvrir plus largement la zone de développement potentiel du geste dans l’activité des fossoyeurs en stimulant leurs discussions professionnelles. La mise en visibilité et en discussion dans le métier de la variabilité inter et intra-individuelle de réalisation d’un même geste au contact des questions concrètes de travail a ouvert le milieu professionnel vers de nouvelles formes d’actions de prévention des TMS dans l’organisation prescrite du travail.

Das Ziel der Dissertation war, zu untersuchen, welche Aspekte bei Design und Implementierung von Gestensteuerung im Bereich Mensch-Maschine Interaktion wichtig sind. Der Schwerpunkt des ersten Teiles richtet sich auf Aspekte eines Gestenvokabulars und die Frage eines zusätzlichen Feedbacks unter Bezugnahme auf Usability, mentale Belastung und Nutzerzufriedenheit. Der Schwerpunkt des zweiten Teils liegt auf den Auswirkungen von Gestensteuerung auf das Fahrverhalten. In der vorliegenden Dissertation wurden drei relevante Aspekte von Gestensteuerung herausgestellt. Experiment 1 und 2 der Vorstudie untersuchten, wie ein Gestenvokabular aussehen sollte im Hinblick auf die Form der Gesten und die Anzahl verschiedener Gesten, die in einem System implementiert werden. Als Ergebnis schnitt die höchste Anzahl an Gesten (6) in Bezug auf User Experience und Akzeptanz am besten ab. Ebenso das Gestenset, das an die menschliche Kommunikation angelehnt war. Im Unterschied zur Bedienung eines Touchscreens gibt es bei Gestensteuerung kein direktes haptisches Feedback. Aus diesem Grund wurde in Experiment 3 der Vorstudie untersucht, ob es einen Ersatz für das fehlende direkte Feedback geben sollte. Als Ergebnis kann festgehalten werden, dass alle genutzten Feedback-Varianten nicht signifikant besser abschnitten als die Variante mit keinem zusätzlichen Feedback. Die Simulator- und die VIL-Studie untersuchten den Einfluss von Gestensteuerung auf das Blickverhalten und die Reaktion auf kritische Ereignisse im Straßenverkehr. Für diesen Zweck wurde das Gestensteuerungs-Setup in einen Simulator beziehungsweise das Vehicle in the Loop (VIL) übertragen. Die Simulator-Studie konnte zeigen, dass die Fahrer weniger häufig auf das Display im Fahrzeuginneren schauten wenn sie Gestensteuerung benutzten im Vergleich zu Touchsteuerung. Außerdem fühlten sie sich sicherer und die Gebrauchstauglichkeit wurde als gut beschrieben. Die VIL-Studie konnte einen positiven Einfluss auf Reaktionszeiten auf kritische Ereignisse zeigen. Insgesamt kann damit Gestensteuerung als sichere Alternative für Interaktion im Fahrzeug bezeichnet werden, die darüber hinaus auch beliebt bei den Fahrern zu sein scheint. This thesis investigates aspects of designing and implementing gestures in human-machine interaction (HMI). The first part focuses on aspects of a gesture set and additional feedback with regard to usability, workload, and user satisfaction. The second part focuses on the impact of gesture-based interaction (GBI) on driving behavior. More specifically, this thesis identifies three elementary aspects of designing a GBI. Pre-study experiments 1 and 2 examine how a gesture set should appear in terms of the shape and number of gestures used. The results indicate that the highest number of gestures, six, performs best in terms of user experience and acceptance. However, a gesture set borrowed from human communication performs equally well. In contrast to touch-based interaction (TBI), direct haptic feedback for mid-air gestures is not present. Therefore, pre-study experiment 3 is conducted in order to determine whether a surrogate is necessary. The results of this experiment suggest that implemented forms of feedback are not rated significantly higher than special feedback. The simulator-study and VIL-study investigate the real-world impact of GBI on driver behavior in terms of gaze behavior and reaction to critical events. For this purpose, the GBI setup is transferred into a simulator environment with a Vehicle in the Loop (VIL) to evaluate GBI for IVIS use. The simulator-study demonstrates that drivers look less to the display when using GBI compared to TBI. Moreover, they feel safer, and the user experience is better rated. Therefore, GBI has a positive impact on driver distraction. The VIL-study reveals a positive impact on reaction times to critical events. In conclusion, gestures can be a safe alternative for in-car interaction, an alternative which is popular among drivers.

The central aim of this study was to explore visual representation of English particle-verb (PV) constructions in Croatian secondary school students. The task was to investigate in what way PV constructions were represented. More specifically, we were interested if the participants would find the PV construction’s components important enough for the meaning of the PV construction to include them in their drawings. There is a number of existing studies on strategic construal of particle verbs and on beneficial effects of pictures in the learning process. However, few studies analyse the nature of self-generated visual representations in connection to the meaning. Self-generated visual representations offer an insight into the collaboration of other cognitive processes and cognitive motivation in the process of the construal of meaning. Therefore, we were interested in seeing what the visual representations of particle-verb constructions would show. The sample consisted of four grades of high-school students aged 15 to 18 (N=92). The instrument included 24 English particle-verb constructions, but only 16 constructions were analysed in this study. Participants were provided with the meaning of each PV constructions with the task of drawing it. The results offered interesting findings. A large part (74.04%) of subjects’ drawings corresponded to the PV constructions’ figurative meanings provided in the questionnaire. A part of the subjects’ drawings (22.07%) included meanings of one or both components, which means the data offered evidence of conceptual integration of meaning. In addition, the data offered insight into the use of conventional symbols and body language when presented with a task of visual representation of meaning. Cilj ovog rada bio je istražiti vizualnu reprezentaciju engleskih fraznih glagola hrvatskih učenika srednje škole. Cilj je bio istražiti na koji se način frazni glagoli prikazuju, to jest, smatraju li sudionici komponente fraznih glagola dovoljnih bitnima za značenje da bi ih prikazali svojim crtežima. Postoje razna istraživanja na temu strateškog konstruiranja značenja fraznih glagola te na temu pozitivnih učinaka slika u procesu. Međutim, ne postoji mnogo istraživanja koja proučavaju sam sadržaj individualnih vizualnih prikaza te vezu istih sa značenjem. Individualne vizualne reprezentacije pružaju uvid u suradnju drugih kognitivnih procesa i kognitivne motivacije u procesu konstruiranja značenja. Stoga, zanimalo nas je što će biti prikazano u vizualnim prikazima fraznih glagola. Uzorak se sastojao od 4 razreda srednjoškolaca u dobi od 15 do 18 godina (N = 92). Instrument se sastojao od 24 engleska frazna glagola, ali samo je 16 glagola analizirano u ovom radu. Sudionici su uz svaki frazni glagol imali dano značenje, te zadatak crtanja navedenog značenja. Iz rezultata su proizašli zanimljivi zaključci. Veliki dio (74.04%) crteža ispitanika odgovarao je figurativnim značenjima fraznih glagola koji su dani u upitniku. Dio crteža ispitanika (22.07%) uključivao je značenje jedne ili obje komponente fraznog glagola, što znači da su podaci pružali dokaze o konceptualnoj integraciji značenja. Osim toga, nova otkrića uključuju podatke koji pružaju uvid u uporabu konvencionalnih simbola i gesta u zadatku vizualne reprezentacije značenja.

This article posits that the selfie is a screenic gesture which allows individuals to embody themselves within what Vivian Sobchack calls the ‘screen-sphere’: a reformulation of our definition of the screen which accounts for the ubiquity and mobility of contemporary screens that can no longer be regarded as an ‘“array” of discrete artefacts’ but instead regarded ‘as a structural and functional collectivity’. While Sobchack claims that our ‘lived-bodies cannot physically dwell in this new spatiality without special technologies’ such as VR equipment, I believe that the set of complex gestures which result in the selfie allow, in fact, for a type of embodied existence within the screen-sphere. In particular, it is grasping the device and viewing oneself in its ‘digital mirror’ that results in this complex gestural moment. I am following Flusser in my definition of gesture; that is, a production of meaning that is contained in some practised performance: a symbolic movement that at once both expresses and articulates meaning. I will draw upon Bo Burnham’s film EIGHTH GRADE (2017) to provide an example of how this gestural relationship develops within the screen-sphere, in which a young protagonist engages with a variety of ‘screenic’ surfaces. Closely examining the main character’s selfie process, I will, first, reformulate Sobchack’s screen-sphere as a screenic topology that accounts for how screens arrange space; second, I will examine how gestural movements emerge within this topology; and finally, I will examine the role of the digital mirror, and how looking into the device consolidates this gesture.

In this essay, we remix the participatory gestures that emerged in and around Drawing Light, an experimental workshop that we developed in 2018 to explore what happens when illumination moves from a functionalist binary between the invisible and the visible, to become part of an affective charge that reorganises the relation between light and bodily presence, capture and dispersal, clarity and opacity. In other words, we explore the workshop’s propositional conditions that allowed participants to access the material supports of a cinematic experience – light and screens – in order to play with a gesturality in excess of the human, in order to develop a working concept of the ‘light gesture’. We begin by describing the workshop format. We then consider three selected movement ecologies of cinematic light and critical concepts from Suzanne Langer and Edouard Glissant that influenced the workshop design, to refine our sense of how light gestures are compositions with time, and to outline their ‘logic of feeling’. Finally, we revisit the workshop itself through a gestural catalogue, to consider how we re-choreographed these light gestures in collaboration with participants, to reopen the encounters which follow and draw out transversal weavings between ecologies, readings, and practice.

This article proposes an analysis of gesture in relation to Vine videos that use boredom-related hashtags to classify bodily movements and gestures and to link them to a particular mood, situation, or state of mind. Drawing from Giorgio Agamben’s ‘Notes on Gesture’, the article situates Vine videos within the emergent attention economy of twenty-first century media, which aims to extract profit from even the most mundane of our daily gestures. As I argue, gesture in these videos is marked by an uncomfortable tension between digital network culture’s demand for both entertaining content and sufficiently entertained subjects, and the obdurate state of lethargy and stalled agency that these videos often express. As such, the gestural in these Vines is caught up in the neoliberal logic of means and ends, while also holding out the possibility of interrupting this logic to disclose what Agamben calls ‘pure means’, or the ‘emergence of the being-in-a-medium of human beings’.

The three audiovisual essays presented in this collection employ digital tools to research and explicate the significance of gesture, deliberately engaging with written scholarship. Though written text might anchor the videos’ images and sounds, it never quite contains them, reminding us that the audiovisual essay is itself ‘in between’ scholarship and filmmaking.

This article explores the co-constitution of autism in the twentieth century with a normative concept of gesture and body language. As an archive of bodies in movement, cinema provides a database of gestures, their changing modality, and cultural distinctiveness across the course of a century. A lesser known cinema of medical and psychiatric film testifies to a longstanding fascination with the a-typical gesture as an optic for observation, documentation, and diagnosis. An identification of idiosyncratic motor co-ordination in the early twentieth century coincided with the rise of neurology, obtaining a different focus in the postwar period in an enquiry into autistic presence. Produced as an outside, autistic gesture provides an external limit-case of what can be known about the development of the human subject.

International audience; Shakespeare's Macbeth displays a pattern of characters objecting to gestures, be it others' or their own. This includes Macbeth refusing to shake hands with his opponent before the battle, his words to Banquo's ghost quoted in the title above, Banquo's own puzzlement at the weird sisters' placing a finger over their lips, the doctor's suspicions at Lady Macbeth's rubbing her hands and sleepwalking, as well as Malcom's request that Macduff not pull his hat over his eyes. In many of these cases, gesture is pitted against speech, which seems to undermine the classically-derived ideal of "suit[ing] the word to the action, the action to the word" (Hamlet, 3.2.16-18). This essay will suggest that in Macbeth, speech/gesture dissociation meta-dramatically channels the play's representation of heroic decline into an exploration of non-mimetic ways of generating suspense, empathy, and catharsis, in keeping with the turn towards pantomime and pageantry that marked early seventeenth-century drama.; Dans le Macbeth de Shakespeare, on relève une accumulation de répliques par lesquelles un personnage s'oppose à une gestuelle, qu'il s'agisse de la sienne ou de celle d'un autre. On se proposera ici de montrer que dans Macbeth, la dissociation du geste et de la parole permet, par méta-théâtralité, de faire de la représentation du déclin de l’héroïsme le vecteur d’une réflexion sur certaines stratégies non mimétiques de création du suspense, de l’empathie et de la catharsis, dans le cadre d’un théâtre du début du dix-septième siècle qui fait la part belle au spectaculaire et à la pantomime.

International audience; Although the central quality of Odysseus’ rooted bed is clear, much about its nature as an object is left obscure in the telling. This article analyses Odysseus’ account of the making of his bed (Odyssey, 23.183-204) as an example of a detailed narrative of making (ekphrasis tropou) rather than as a description of an object. It argues that the passage derives its meaning from its presentation as a first-person narration and from the actions related. For Penelope, the internal audience, the speech makes present the younger Odysseus, as the older Odysseus reperforms his creative gestures, while the vocabulary used allows the external audience to see in Odysseus’ account a summary of his marriage and adventures.; Si la qualité essentielle du lit enraciné d’Ulysse est clairement décrite dans le discours qu’il adresse à Pénélope (Odyssée, 23.183-204), bien d’autres caractéristiques de cet objet sont escamotées. À partir d’une approche anthropo-historique des représentations, cette étude se penche sur la manière dont le dessinateur – André Chéret – représente corporellement son héros dans la Bande dessinée Rahan. À une époque pré-historique, le dessinateur plonge ses jeunes lecteurs dans un univers où les codes gestuels du héros sont proches de l’univers sportif des années 1970-1980. Reflet le plus légitime de l’excellence corporelle, la norme sportive élève ainsi le héros de ses semblables et renforce son identification auprès de son lectorat de plus en plus adepte de la chose sportive. Cependant, le dessinateur n’hésite pas à distordre la réalité pratique du geste sportif pour mieux le représenter. Il s’émancipe ainsi de certains critères d’efficacité sportifs pour rendre le graphisme du mouvement plus visible. Finalement, la norme sportive n’est pas le dessein d’André Chéret, il n’est qu’un moyen au service du projet moral du scénario. Based on an anthropo-historical approach, the aim of this study is to analyse how the draftsman – André Chéret – depicts his hero in the Rahan’s comic strip. In a pre-historic period, the artist plunges his young readers into a world where a hero uses sports gestures very close to sports of the 1970s-1980s. The sporting standard raises the hero of this fellow men and reinforces his identification with his readership adept to sport. However, André Chéret does not hesitate to distort the pratical reality of sport gesture to represent it better. He so becomes emancipated to sports efficiency criteria to return the movement handwriting more visible. Finally, the sports standard is not the intention of André Chéret, it is only a way into the moral project of the scenario.

This thesis presents a novel musical instrument, named the Embodied Musical Instrument (EMI), which has been designed to answer two problems : how can we capture and model musical gestures and how can we use this model to control sound synthesis parameters expressively. The EMI is articulated around an explicit mapping strategy, which draws inspiration from the piano-playing techniques and other objects’ affordances. The system we propose makes use of 3D cameras and computer vision algorithms in order to free the gesture from intrusive devices and ease the process of capture and performance, while enabling precise and reactive tracking of the fingertips and upper-body. Having recourse to different 3D cameras tracking solutions, we fully exploit their potential by adding a transparent sheet, which serves as a detection threshold for fingerings as well as bringing a simple but essential haptic feedback. We examined finger movements while tapping on the surface of the EMI and decomposed their trajectories into essential phases, which enabled us to model and analyse piano-like gestures. A preliminary study of generic musical gestures directed our interest not only on the effective gestures operated by the fingers - in the case of keyboard instruments - but also on the accompanying and figurative gestures, which are mostly characterised by the arms and head movements. Consequently, we distinguish two level of interactions, delimited by two bounding volumes. The micro bounding volume includes the micro-gestures operated with the fingers, while the macro bounding volume includes larger movements with the upper-body. Building from this, we extend our piano-like model to a 3D interaction paradigm, where higher-level musical parameters, such as sound effects, can be controlled continuously by upper-body free movements. We explored a set of real-world scenarios for this instrument, namely practice, composition and performance. The EMI introduces a framework for capture and analysis, of specific musical gestures. An off-line analysis of gesture features can reveal trends, faults and musical specificities of an interpret. Several musical works have been created and performed live; either solo or accompanied by a string quartet, revealing the body gesture specificities through the sounds it synthesises. User experience feedback shows that the instrument can be easily taught - if not self-taught - thanks to the intuitive gesture paradigms drawn from piano-like gestures and other metaphorical gestures.; Cette thèse présente un nouvel instrument de musique, appelé Embodied Musical Instrument (EMI), qui a été conçu pour répondre à deux problèmes : comment pouvons-nous “capturer” et modéliser des gestes musicaux et comment utiliser ce modèle afin de contrôler des paramètres de synthèse sonore de manière expressive. Le système que nous proposons utilise des caméras 3D et des algorithmes de vision par ordinateur afin de libérer le geste de dispositifs intrusifs, tout en facilitant le processus de capture et de performance. Nous utilisons différentes caméras 3D pour le suivi de geste et exploitons pleinement leur potentiel en ajoutant une plaque transparente. Cette plaque créer un seuil de détection pour les doigtés, mais fournit aussi une rétroaction haptique, simple mais nécessaire. Nous avons examiné les gestes des doigts par rapport à la surface de l’EMI et nous avons décomposé leurs trajectoires en phases élémentaires, ce qui nous a permis de modéliser et d'analyser des gestes de type pianistique. Une étude préliminaire sur les gestes musicaux a porté notre intérêt non seulement sur les gestes “effectifs” opérés par les doigts - dans le cas des instruments à claviers - mais aussi sur les gestes “d’accompagnements” et “figuratifs”, caractérisés principalement par les mouvements des bras et de la tête. Par conséquent, nous distinguons deux niveaux d'interactions, délimités par deux volumes d’interaction: un volume englobant dit “micro” inclut les micro-gestes opérés par les doigts, tandis qu’un volume englobant dit “macro” comprend des mouvements plus importants du haut du corps. À partir de cela, nous étendons notre modèle de jeu pianistique à un paradigme d'interaction 3D, où les paramètres musicaux de haut niveau, tels que les effets sonores (filtres, réverbération, spatialisation), peuvent être contrôlés en continu par des mouvements du haut du corps. Nous avons exploré un ensemble de scénarios réels pour cet instrument, à savoir la pratique, la composition et la performance. L'EMI introduit un cadre pour la capture et l'analyse de gestes musicaux spécifiques. Une analyse hors ligne des fonctionnalités gestuelles peut révéler des tendances, des défauts et des spécificités d'une interprétation musicale. Plusieurs œuvres musicales ont été créées pour l’EMI, réalisées en solo, accompagnées d'un quatuor à cordes, et d’autres ensembles musicaux. Un retour d'expérience montre que l'instrument peut être facilement enseigné - sinon de manière autodidacte - grâce aux paradigmes gestuels intuitifs tirés de gestes pianistiques et d'autres gestes métaphoriques.

International audience; CIGALE (Capture et Interaction avec des Gestes Artistiques, Langagiers et Expressifs) is an artistic and dialogical platform that explores the hybridization between human and virtual gestures in real time. This platform allows studying complementary aspects of gestures, from the linguistic field to the arts. CIGALE allows understanding the relationships between symbolic gestures (coverbal ones), expressive gestures (choral conducting and poetry) and full body gestures (mime). Starting from motion capture (1), we have created four databases of gestures. The platform allows to study and analyses gestures, strokes and meaning (2). We propose then to generate new gestures using genetic algorithm that converges to new gestures inspired by the ones of the database (3). In order to visualize the gestures, we can render the motion on different characters by changing body aspect(mesh), using particles effect or trails (4). At least, it’s possible to interact using gestures with the virtual characters that can answer autonomously to the user or to the audience (5).
