We present Paper Forager, a web-based system which allows users to rapidly explore large collections of research documents. Our sample corpus uses 5,055 papers published at the ACM CHI and UIST conferences. Paper Forager provides a visually based browsing experience, allowing users to identify papers of interest based on their graphical appearance, in addition to providing traditional faceted search techniques. A cloud-based architecture stores the papers as multi-resolution images, giving users immediate access to reading individual pages of a paper, thus reducing the transaction cost between finding, scanning, and reading papers of interest. Initial user feedback sessions elicited positive subjective feedback, while a 24-month external deployment generated in-the-wild usage data which we analyze. This paper reflects the technology-induced novelty of translation, which is perceived as a bridge between languages and cultures. We debate the extent to which the translation process maintains its specificity in the light of the new technology-enhanced working methods ensured by a large variety of Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) and Machine Translation (MT) tools that aim to enhance the process, which includes the translation itself, the translator, the translation project manager, the linguist, the terminologist, the reviewer, and the client. This paper also hints at the topic from the perspective of the translation teacher, who needs to provide students with transversal competencies that are suitable for the digital area, supported by the ability to tackle Cloud-based translation tools, in view of Industry 4.0 requirements. The article examines the socially constructed nature of money and its function as a medium of mass communication. A paper which examines the imagery and symbolism of U.S. paper currency before and after its nationalization in 1861 is presented. The evolution of U.S. national currency from 1861 forward is characterized by three major developments: an increasing standardization, a reduced repertoire of portraits and imagery, and an overall reduction of different types of issues.

The dominant view of communication efficacy rests on the assumption that effective communication relies on the interpersonal skills base of the interlocutors. This study presented an alternative perspective through an investigation of the processes involved in intergroup communication competence. Self categorization theory was employed to propose that categorization is a functional process, enabling positive outcomes in both intragroup and intergroup communication exchanges. Results suggest that two primary processes guide communicative behaviour to influence efficacy in the categorized context. The access to, or expectations of, a shared interpretive framework for ingroup members may make the communicative episode an easier process for interlocutors and therefore enable a more effective exchange. The additional motivation to work for the benefit of the ingroup may facilitate effective exchanges in both intragroup and intergroup contexts. Whilst directly enabling intragroup exchanges, this motivation may also enable intergroup exchanges if it is perceived that to work with the outgroup member will lead to a benefit for the ingroup. These findings present an optimistic view of the opportunities afforded for communication in the intergroup context. In so doing, this study challenges the perspective that categorization sponsors aggravated intergroup relations and that effective communication within the intergroup context can only be effected through the individually oriented application of communication skills. As we all know, "grey" doesn't often mean "closed"; maybe sometimes it can mean just hard to find. If its sources are open and there are the conditions, the whole document could become an open access one. An example among all is the case of the pre-prints. When you archive a pre-print in a repository you allow the free, open and "grey" preprint become Open Access to everyone. If the immediately archived "grey" pre-print is open access it can accelerate global knowledge and research advancement. The recent COVID-19 pandemic is making us rethink the way we communicate, search, research and inform; there are some cases of publishers which immediately publish some COVID-19 related articles pre-print; other, instead, are making soon available the accepted manuscript (post-print). Let us concentrate on pre-prints, closer to "grey" literature. An immediate and open pre-print could accelerate research in some fields and could let researchers (and us) know on time if there is a deadlock or not. Some publishers are following this way. By the way, some pre-prints will never become a published article; in any case knowing those pre-prints let people know why that way is an unpassable one or if some other ways to improve research could be passable. This study examines the effectiveness of message framing strategies, taking into account interactions with approach/avoidance tendencies (BIS/BAS), on beliefs, self-efficacy, attitudes, and intentions to engage in adaptive coping behaviors (e.g., take personal time) for parents of children with eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa, bulimia). Healthy adaptive behaviors are likely to improve both caregiver health and child recovery from an eating disorder. A threecondition (gain frame vs. loss frame vs. control) experiment provided evidence that gain frames may be more beneficial in promoting adaptive behaviors among parents of children with eating disorders, while loss frames may be harmful. Findings are qualified by interactions with approach/avoidance tendencies. This study contributes to the literature on gain and loss framing by examining framing effects on an adaptive health behavior rather than a prevention or detection behavior and by examining framing effects on a new health issue, caregiving. This study explores communication effects on foreign policy opinions. Specifically, it is argued that isolationist attitudes lead to selective avoidance of international news, which leads to effects on foreign policy opinions above and beyond the effect of isolationism alone. Furthermore, the effects of framing the intervention in cooperative versus militant terms are explored. Secondary analysis of the Pew Center for the People and the Press' December 2006 News Interest Index Survey demonstrated that in the context of evaluations of the Iraq war and willingness to engage in Darfur, isolationist attitudes affected opinions through avoidance of news media. Additionally, framing of the intervention influenced the process by which individuals evaluated an intervention. Individuals have struggled to select and implement effective and appropriate trust-building and persuasive techniques as they move from a face to face environment to an online environment. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending is a new online alternative to requesting and receiving loans, providing a natural experiment for examining how language can be used in an online environment to persuade and build trust. We examined how the language in 9,695 loan requests at P2P lending site Prosper.com affected lending behavior. Although borrowers often provide justifications or humanizing personal details these verbal indicators did not increase funding by lenders. Instead, word count, quantifiers and prepositions significantly predicted increased loan success. The results are discussed in terms of Elaboration Likelihood Model and Uncertainty Reduction Theory, and practices on how borrowers can optimize the persuasiveness of self-presentations in these contexts are presented. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT This paper proposes a 'rough co-citation', which is a measure of relationship to expand co-citation networks so as to include new relevant documents. A rough co-citation relationship is a linkage between a pair of documents which are cited by two other documents in a similar citation context. The linkage strength of a rough co-citation relationship may be weaker than the original co-citation relationship, because a rough co-citation relationship is determined by citations in two separate documents. Rough co-citation linkages, however, may yield new relevant documents that are not identified by the original co-citation linkages. For example, the rough co-citation can identify relevant documents that are published after the citing document of the original co-citation becomes public. This study conducted IR experiments to evaluate the search performances of retrieval methods using the co-citation networks expanded by the rough co-citation relationships. Specifically, the random walk with restart, which is one of the latest graph search algorithms, is applied to the expanded and original co-citation networks. Scores of the normalized discounted cumulative gain (nDCG@K) are then compared. ABSTRACT In this poster, we describe partial findings from a larger study that explored the co-first and co-corresponding author phenomenon in two biomedical research areas, pharmacy and anesthesia. The top 10 journals in the two areas by the five-year impact factor as listed in 2013 JCR were used for the paper sources. A total of 17802 pharmacy papers and 35801 anesthesia papers were included in the analyses. Each paper was manually examined to identify the co-first and co-corresponding author papers. In this poster, we will show the distributions of the paper numbers and percentages of the co-first and co-corresponding papers over twenty years (1995-2014), the distributions of author numbers sharing the co-first and co-corresponding authorship, and the combinations and distributions of the authors' byline positions. The progress of the past seven years of field study research on work group effectiveness was examined in the paper titled "Work Team Effectiveness Field Research: Progress and Prospects." An analysis of thirty-six empirical studies reveals that work team field research is proceeding primarily along dimensions of interdependence, autonomy, diversity and conflict. Drawing on established ecological theories and notions of strategic positioning from the management literature, we contend that processes of mutualism, competition, and inertia shape the propensity of firms to move in the market space.

Friedman developed five alternative models for Chinese-American differences in conflict avoiding tendencies, and tested them using a scenario study with respondents from Taiwan and the U.S. The results showed that, contrary to expectations, differences in the expected career costs/benefits of good/bad relations with others does not explain Chinese-American differences in avoiding is strong social norms that favor avoiding among Chinese.

Most of us who teach within the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curricular areas expect to have teaching assignments that directly align with these disciplines. A teaching assignment in a curricular area outside of STEM is much less common. One focus of this paper is to describe a course that is taught by our physics faculty entitled Changing Views of the Universe. Changing Views is a course that is part of our general education core of courses in a curricular area entitled Traditions that Shape the Western World. Courses taught within this curricular area are typically taught by such departments as anthropology, art history, communication, government, history, and philosophy. Students who enroll in this course are non-science majors who are looking to fulfill their general education requirements towards graduation in this particular content area. Because the course is filled with non-science majors, the often technical course content must be presented in a non-mathematical way. Since the course content includes just about everything from the Big Bang to our present-day understanding of the cosmos, teaching these topics without much mathematics presents many unique challenges. A brief overview of the curriculum developed for the Changing Views course will be provided. Particular attention will be placed on some of the unique ways a writing-based approach has been implemented with the ultimate goal of enhancing of student learning. Emphasis here will be placed on a short paper activity designed to elicit student understanding of key topics addressed in class. Undoubtedly writing contributed to the perception of history from other perspectives. Starting from clay tablets from Summer or Tartaria and until so known editing programs for today's format text , the writing was obviously the most important form of communication of ideas, concepts and theories. One of the most popular concepts to which we refer when we refer to writing, is the book. Books were for centuries the only means of passing on information, regardless of their(religious, scientific, etc..), reflecting their technological evolution of humankind. Therefore, long time, books were written by hand, and then they have multiplied copyists. But the invention of printing (in Europe around 1450, China and Korea it was known long before), the flow of information has been simplified and books have become an accessible element for public, more than hitherto. There was a long pause in the evolution of the concept book that has remained virtually unchanged, despite the fact that printing technology has changed radically. The so-called break ended a few years ago, because books have entered in a new stage of development -the electronic book or eBook. This is the digital version of a work (either already existing in print or broadcast only in digital format) the version whose content can be viewed either through a computer or through other devices that allow the compatibilization of the systems. Several centuries the printing on led to accelerating evolution of the process of social development. This required a rapid and massive development of paper-making industry which led to the emergence and overcome of serious environmental problems. This paper reports the preliminary findings from ongoing research on the potential role of storytelling as an analytical framework in assessing a research project. It is noted that most existing research on storytelling in science is focused on science communication. There is limited research on storytelling as an analytical tool for analyzing and synthesizing research plans and design. This research is based on the premise that the assessment of a research project and design is based on reviewing one or the other form of research communication, whether it is a research plan, a research report, or a presentation. Thus, the assessment is mediated by how well the research plan, proposal, report, or presentation, communicates the research to the reviewer and how well it connects the dots. The reported findings are based on studies with two different storytelling frameworks applied to assess research representations made by doctoral researchers as part of their annual research progress review. The research of this paper provides a useful insight into the many barriers leading to building services overdesign, within the context of NHS hospitals. The issue of overdesign in building services is a systemic problem, whereby numerous contributing factors manifest into an issue that inevitably leads to poor system performance and excess costs. A key factor leading to oversizing is the excessive and uncoordinated application of design margins across the various stages of a building services project. Poor communication between project stakeholders is another significant barrier that inhibits the distribution of information between design groups; unknown requirements, system redundancy and poor system specifications further add to the problem. There are many complex interrelationships associated with the building service design process in hospitals, with external stakeholders adding to the complexity. This points to the importance of effective communication between stakeholders and clear contractual terms between NHS Trusts and external private sector organisations. Elizabeth Mary Wilson investigated organizations described as positive for women, drawing on seven case studies in Great Britain, from both the private and public sectors.

Brown argued that a narrative approach can assist researchers in their efforts to analyze organizational identities and sensemaking processes, as political maneuvers designed to legitimate certain interests while marginalizing others. Jenny M. Hoobler investigated whether abusive supervision may be a behavior not necessarily aimed at a specific subordinate, but instead the result of a displeasure by a supervisor with his or her organization. Hwee-Hoon Tan, Maw-Der Foo and Min-Hui Kwek proposed that customer traits play a part in the service encounter. Violet Ho adopted a dyadic-level perspective to examine the impact of social influence on employees' perceptions of psychological contract fulfillment. Kelly L. Zellars and colleagues used survey responses from restaurant employees and their supervisors to investigate linkages between the justice perceptions of employees and organizational citizenship behavior. Greg R. Oldham and Markus Baer proposed that employees exhibit creativity at work when conditions are present that facilitate both the generation of creative ideas and the sharing of these ideas with others.

Business communication in English is getting more highlighted in the globalized context, as the English language spreads as the most dominant lingua franca in international business settings. While the volume of studies focused on business communication in various disciplines continues to increase, new strands of research emerge; some approaches are going out of focus. To improve our understanding and offer a more realistic picture of the field of business communication in English, we examined promising trends in the area. The study primarily selected 254 publications pertaining to Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences, which were extracted from the Scopus database for the period from 2012 to 2016. All sources relevant to technical communication as well as narrowly concentrated studies in management and marketing were excluded as irrelevant. Using search strategies, sampling, content analysis, comparison analysis, categorization, the present paper revealed the basic trends in the field. 254 papers were filtered for the purpose of detecting their links to business communication in English by identifying the relevance of the keywords of the papers and then comparing the selections made by both authors. All the 144 publications ultimately sorted out in our study were then amalgamated into a bigger direction of research. According to the findings of the present research the most widely explored themes relevant to business communication in English cover discourse studies and issues of pragmatics and effective business communication; research of business communication skills and competencies including their classifications, practice-related and teaching aspects; didactic studies for teaching business communication at tertiary level; publications on intercultural and cross-cultural business communication, on English as a lingua franca in business-related contexts. After a stroke or brain injury, it may be more difficult to understand language and communicate with others. Speech-language therapy may help an individual regain language and cope with changes in their communication abilities. Our research examines the process of speech-language therapy with an emphasis on the practices of therapists working with adults with aphasia and apraxia of speech. This paper presents findings from field work undertaken to inform the design of a mixed paper-digital interface prototype using multimodal digital pens. We describe and analyze therapists' initial reactions to the system and present two case studies of use by older adults undergoing speech-language therapy. We discuss the utility of multimodal paper-digital interfaces to assist therapy and describe our vision of a system to help therapists independently create custom interactive paper materials for their clients. With a national shortage of skilled technicians and engineers in the microelectronics industry, developing talent to fill roles in the workforce is critical for the U.S. national security and economy. Given this, a public-private-academic ecosystem was formed with the goal of further developing the U.S. microelectronics workforce. This Work in Progress Paper describes one of seven findings of a workforce needs assessment study completed by this group. Communication was a key finding of this assessment and was a link between the technical and professional skills identified. This finding guided the research questions for this paper: (1) What value do hiring professionals and supervisors in microelectronics engineering place on communication when hiring entry-level microelectronics technicians and engineers? (2) How do microelectronics industry professionals describe desired communication skills? Looking specifically at communication, the following sub theme was identified. Within microelectronics, effective communication among individuals and within interdisciplinary teams is necessary as it allows technical information to be quickly "distilled" and understood by management and other nontechnical stakeholders. However, participants shared that individuals often lack sufficient oral and written communication skills that allow them to quickly and succinctly articulate the "so what" to non-technical stakeholders. This paper includes detailed examples of how microelectronics professionals describe and value communication skills and identifies ways that focusing on communication as a professional skill improves student development, the associated student outcomes, and career readiness. Mass media is the most expanded means of communication nowadays. For decades mass media has been actively working out the strategies to influence the recipient's mind. In this research the author makes efforts to make a survey of what appears to be the most efficient, acute and widely practiced expressive stylistic means applicable in the media. The key word here is expressiveness since it reflects the speaker's attitude to the events and forms the pragmatic value of the text. As modern psycholinguists believe, effective communication in the modern world is the one influencing the ideas and making people act in a certain way. Neuro Linguistic Programming as means of predetermining people's behavior is very actual in this aspect as well. The subject of the research is a great variety of stylistic and language means which serve expressiveness such as metaphors, allusions, jargon, colloquialisms, figurative language, archaisms, neologisms as well as some others. The methods applied are stylistic analysis, lexical, semantic, morphological and syntactical analysis. The findings of this survey imply that the expressive means in mass media vary dependent on the recipient. The recipients of quality papers and the recipients of mass papers react differently to various stylistic and language means. Mobile payment is the activity in which a monetary transaction is made through a mobile device, it has been experiencing impressive growth in recent years. It is not only a means of payment, but also a way to increase consumers' willingness to pay. Mobile payment generates positive business outcomes including higher revenues and increased hiring. Although mobile payment is strategically important for merchants to achieve their financial goals, very few researches systematically studied merchants' adoption of mobile payment. The missing knowledge makes it hard to understand what influence merchants' decision on the adoption of mobile payment. This study extracted 172 mobile payment related papers from three reputable databases, 32 of them were included in this study as they focus on organizations. This paper presents a new brain-computer interface (BCI) application using the portable Unicorn EEG headset embedding eight sensors for controlling a vending machine to deliver natural juices by integrating an original LabVIEW instrument with theUnicorn P300 Speller software. The UDP communication protocol facilitates the transfer of commands between these two virtual applications. The proposed LabVIEW instrument included a state-machine algorithm to manage the number and the order of commands necessary to change the state of buttons showing pictures with the selected natural juices. The current research presented an experimental analysis regarding the use of different boards (comprising human faces, standard keyboard, and customized view) to identify the most efficient selection of the target symbol and the quickest transfer of UDP commands between the Unicorn Speller software and the LabVIEW application. Also, it highlighted the analysis of the BCI applications that involve the P300 evoked biopotentials and the voluntary eye-blinking as control signals for external devices. The novelty of this paper is emphasized by developing a LabVIEW solution to receive the UDP electroencephalography (EEG) data sent by the Unicorn Speller software and the idea of creating an experimental BCI prototype for controlling a vending machine aimed at delivering natural juices. People with intellectual disabilities experience difficulties developing social connections with others as it heavily relies on verbal and written communication. Co-designing tangible and visual technology with people with intellectual disabilities can create new inclusive opportunities to connect with others and alternative modes of communication. This paper discusses a three stage research plan that has been created to explore such technologies, and provides findings from completing the first year of this research. No company today escapes digital transformation any longer. Digital transformation is the key enabler for additional internal efficiency, as well as new external opportunities. It is not just about turning existing processes into their digital versions, but rethinking current operations and giving sense to employees why things should be done differently, especially in cases where companies have been successful even prior to digital transformation. We begin this paper with a literature review showing that employee engagement and internal communication highly contribute and foster successful digital transformation. Therefore, organizational leaders must know that digital transformation strategy and transformation of employees are strongly interlinked. Answering the question how organizations can successfully intertwine these two transformations is far less understood in literature, meaning that valuable insights are gained through case studies. The qualitative research presented in this paper shows the case of an international tobacco company in the largest transformation in its history. As its result the paper proposes a systematic 9-step approach to tackle digital transformation that is intended to help companies to redefine their internal communications roadmap and lead them successfully in engaging employees. The contribution of this paper is threefold. The paper extends existing theory, both, on digital transformation and employee engagement. Secondly, this paper will help to better understand internal communications underlying digital transformation and thirdly, this paper could help businesses to understand that companies must interlink employee and digital transformation. Most colleges of business strive to assess the oral and written communications skills of their students to assure students are developing such abilities as part of their curricula and in accordance with desirable outcomes suggested by accrediting bodies. This paper describes the project assigned by the author in the senior capstone finance course and the simple rubric designed by the author that is used to evaluate it. The project includes a written paper analyzing the financial statements of an instructor-assigned firm and a formal in-class oral presentation of the results utilizing PowerPoint. Several of the factors and characteristics specified in the evaluation rubric concern oral or written communication. The scores on those rubric items can be combined in an appropriate way to develop an overall written communications score and an overall oral communications score which can then be summarized for a group of students and offer a way to quantify communications performance for those students. This paper reports the results obtained from that approach for four groups of students. A pattern of improvement is observed in those results that may, in part, be attributable to incremental changes in instructional content and reference materials provided by the instructor. The outsourcing of value-added services (VAS) to third-party logistics providers (3PLs) has become a prevalent strategy in various industries, including the automobile sector. This paper explores the dynamics of outsourcing VAS to 3PLs specifically within the context of the automobile industry in the Pune region. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review, the study investigates the satisfaction levels of employees with the VAS provided by 3PLs and the challenges associated with such outsourcing arrangements. The research employs a quantitative methodology, utilizing Likert-based questionnaires to gather data from employees in the automobile industry. Statistical analyses reveal significant insights into employee satisfaction and challenges faced, shedding light on areas for improvement and strategic decision-making. The findings underscore the critical role of VAS outsourcing in enhancing operational efficiency and competitiveness while highlighting the importance of effective communication and coordination between companies and 3PLs. The fight against terrorism is largely played in the realm of communication and it involves ideas, values, and perceptions. Official counterterrorism documents and research on radicalization identify a terrorist narrative being strategically deployed by al-Qaida to fuel extremism and attract new recruits. In this context some suggest that the most effective way for Western democracies to counter terrorism is by developing a credible counter-narrative. The article develops the argument that the concept of narrative is more complex than a simple story. It can be useful in understanding the way strategic narratives, while promoted by specific actors to achieve desired objectives, keep on existing through a collective construction and re-telling process. A strategic narrative can be conceptualized for analytical purposes as a brand.
