In Ethiopia, common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) productivity remains low because of low soil fertility. However, both plant production and soil fertility benefit from integrated application of fertilizers. Thus, this study investigates the effect of integrated application of inorganic, organic and biofertilizers on selected soil properties and yield components of common bean. A field experiment was conducted at three sites in southern Ethiopia, under two consecutive cropping season (2021 and 2022). The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments included three levels of inorganic fertilizer (Triple Superphosphate, TSP), applied at 0, 42.5, and 85 kg TSP ha⁻1 for Kokate; 0, 29, and 58 kg TSP ha⁻1 for Hawassa; and 0, 35.5, and 71 kg TSP ha⁻1 for Alage, tailored to the specific conditions of each site. Additionally, the experiment incorporated three levels of organic inputs 0, 5 t biochar ha⁻1, and 5 t compost ha⁻1 as well as Rhizobium inoculation (HB-429) applied at 500 g ha⁻1. These treatments were designed to assess the combined effects of inorganic, organic and biofertilizers on soil health and crop performance. Results showed that the integrated application of inorganic, and organic fertilizers significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved soil pH, soil organic carbon, and available P compared with the sole fertilizer application plots. Similarly, the integrated use of inorganic, organic and biofertilizers increased nodule numbers, seed weight, grain yield, and biomass yield. We also found that 23 and 24 % higher grain yield were achieved with integrated applications of TSP fertilizer with compost on Hawassa and Alage sites than sole inorganic fertilizer application. On the other hand, the integrated application of TSP fertilizer with biochar increased by 18 % grain yield on Kokate over the sole application of inorganic fertilizer. The highest economic benefit of 69,460 and 63,250 ETB was obtained from the integrated application of TSP fertilizer with compost at Hawassa and Alage sites, respectively. The highest economic benefit for the Kokate site was 53,583 ETB at TSP fertilizer with biochar application. Overall, the study confirms that site-specific integrated soil fertility management appears to be a prerequisite for sustainable and profitable common bean production over sole fertilizer application in southern Ethiopia.

Extreme environmental conditions, such as high temperature, frost, low humidity and desiccating winds, are the main causes for the failure of plantation forests in Ethiopia. Frost damage contributes to the low seedling survival and plantation success in frost affected highlands of Amhara region Ethiopia. Research outputs on farmers' traditional knowledge on frost management and technologies that curb frost related problems are limited in the country. This study was conducted to document the farmers’ traditional knowledge on frost management and their tree preference in frost affected highlands of Amhara region. Sinan, Guna-begemder and Meket districts were selected purposively in 2020. One representative sample Kebele was selected in each district with a total of 204 households selected with systematic random sampling technique for interview. In addition to interview focus group discussion was also conducted. Both descriptive and inferential statistics data analysis method were employed. In this study, frost was found to be an important limiting factor for plantation development in the study area. Frost occurs, mainly, from September to January. The local community applies traditional frost management techniques. The seasonality of frost occurrence and type of traditional frost management practices varied among the studied Kebeles. Eucalyptus globulus, Oldeania alpina, Rhamnus prinoides and Chamaecytisus palmensis were preferred trees species due to their frost resistant performance. The effectiveness of identified traditional frost management techniques needs to be investigated before they can be promoting and disseminating. Farmers should also be trained in proper techniques to protect planted seedlings from frost damage. Adjusting the timing of planting may also help to mitigate the effect of frost damage.

Lack of hard currency is one of the key growth barriers in emerging countries, as imports vastly outstrip exports. In response, governments in these countries usually undertake a variety of policy packages, including the devaluation of the domestic currency. Despite these efforts, there have been no discernible adjustments to foreign balance. This study examines whether the response to devaluation differs significantly between the goods and services trade in Ethiopia. We estimate the long- and short-run elasticities of the disaggregated trade indicators using an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and error correction mechanisms. The empirical results confirm a significant difference between the goods and service sectors in terms of their responses to the devaluation policy in the long and short run. The estimated long-run elasticities of devaluation are only statistically significant for service imports and trade balances with negative signs. The remaining sectors did not show any significant relationships. In addition, we obtain meaningful short-run elasticities for service imports, goods exports, and total exports, all of which have a negative sign. Domestic inflation accounted for a large portion of the short-run import dynamics, output growth, and FDI, which contributed significantly to long-term export performance. The current study reveals that the government should not rely exclusively on the devaluation policy to bridge its external imbalances, and should see alternative and more effective policy mixes to alter the demand and supply sides of foreign trade.

In rural areas where farming is the primary source of income for farmers, engaging in non-farm activities can provide an additional source of income and improve household consumption. However, several social and economic factors present challenges to the involvement of rural households in non-farm activities. This study aimed to examine the impact of non-farm participation on household consumption in rural areas.A multistage sampling method was used to select the sample households from the study area. Heckman's two-step procedure was utilized to analyze survey data obtained from 383 rural household heads. The results indicated that participating in non-farm employment had a positive and significant effect on household consumption levels. The result indicated that households that engage in non-farm activities had higher levels of consumption compared to those who do not participate in such activities. The study also identified several factors that influence household consumption in rural areas. These factors include education, access to credit, distance to market, TLU (Tropical Livestock Unit), membership in “iqub'' (a social financial system), health status, non-farm training, and gender. It was found that gender disparities exist, with female-headed households experiencing lower consumption levels than male-headed households. Based on the findings, the research recommended addressing gender disparities and improving rural infrastructure, particularly in relation to enhancing health services, electricity supply, road transport, and education. Efforts should also be made to overcome the challenges related to access to training and credit. The study emphasized the significance of recognizing the impact of supporting existing social financial systems, such as iqub, in improving household consumption in rural areas.

The objective of the study was to examine the dynamics and sugar content of nectar of major bee flora species and to determine an approximate honeybee colony carrying capacity in northeast dry land areas of the Amhara region. Acacia asak, Acacia etbaica, Acacia tortolis, Becium grandiflorum, and Cordia africana honeybee floral species were selected on the basis of relative dominance in the area. Floral nectar was collected through micropipette and washing techniques based on the flower nature of the species and nectar sugar was measured by refractometer. Hence, A.asak, A.etbaica, A.tortolis, B.grandiflorum, and C.africana could have been estimated to produce 10.2 ± 6.4 mg, 5.3 ± 4.6 mg, and 2.6±1 mg. 4, 3.7 ± 2.1 mg, and 5.7 ± 3.2mg/flower head of nectar sugar, respectively. In a single tree of A.etbaica, A.asak, A.tortolis, B.grandiflorum, and C.africana a mean of 0.15 kg, 0.15 kg, 0.06 kg, 0.01 kg, and 0.03 kg of honey yield was expected to produce respectively. Similarly in a hectare of land, a mean of 49.9 kg, 128.9 kg, 5.6 kg, 5.5 kg, and 2.2 kg of honey was estimated to harvest. In a hectare of land a sum of 57.5 kg, 57.5 kg, and 128.9 kg of honey in highland, midland, and lowland locations, respectively was estimated to produce during the main harvesting season of the area. The mean number of honeybee colonies introduced in the lowland have estimated to be 18 traditional, 6 transitional, and 5 modern hives, and in the highland 12 traditional, 6 transitional, and 5 modern hives whereas in the midland 8 traditional, 5 transitional, 3 modern hives. In summary, even in the study area with limited rainfall and high temperatures, these species secreted a substantial amount of nectar sugar and supporting the enhancement of honey yield.

Juniperus procera Hochst. ex Endl. is an evergreen highland tree species reaching 30–40 m high and restricted to some mountainous areas. This tree is a species of great ecological and economic significance in supporting biodiversity, preventing soil erosion, and providing valuable resources. The study aimed at comparing the provenances effect on growth and yield performance of a 16-years-old J. procera plantation. This long-term experiment included eleven provenances from different regions of Ethiopia. It was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. The plot size was 100 m2 with 2.5 m by 2.5 m spacing. Growth parameters such as height and diameter over a 1-m interval of standing trees were measured for sample trees. The results showed that the overall mean of basal area for 11 provenances was ranging from 4.4 ± 0.29 to 5.2 ± 0.33 m2 ha⁻1. The biggest (11.3 ± 0.14 m) and smallest (9.8 ± 0.16 m) mean height was obtained in the provenances of Kolobo and Dikisis, respectively. The mean volume of the stem ranges from 12.3 ± 0.93 to 17.9 ± 1.1 m3 ha⁻1. The highest and lowest form factor was obtained in the provenances of Gaynt (0.43 ± 0.02) and Hirna (0.32 ± 0.02), respectively. The generic form factor is 0.4 ± 0.01. Provenance Kolobo had the best growth rate in all growth stages with 1.4 m height greater than the poorest provenance Dikisis and 23% greater than the overall average volume (14.5 m3 ha⁻1) at age of 16 years. The variations in growth and yield performance among the provenances could be attributed to genetic differences and adaptation to the local environment. Provenances originating from similar altitude such as Kolobo's provenances showed better growth and yield performance, possibly due to their adaptation to the cooler and wetter conditions prevailing in the study area. Choosing provenances that are well-adapted to the local site conditions can lead to improved productivity and economic returns.

Effective decision-making requires the evaluation of several criteria rather than a single, preferred criterion. The best decision options (alternatives) are recommended to decision-makers when a multi-criteria decision problem is addressed. This study develops a multi-criteria selection method for the assessment of small-scale anaerobic digester technology by combining two existing methods. The Simple Multi-Attribute Rating Technique (SMART) and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) approaches of multiple-criteria decision analysis were used as a decision support tool, and the preferred anaerobic digester technology was selected from a list of eleven potential small-scale digester technologies used in low to middle-income countries. These techniques were applied under two scenarios for a case study in the South African smallholder farmers. Scenario 1 involves a subsistence smallholder farming context, while scenario 2 involves a commercially oriented smallholder farming context. The overall results revealed that the DIY Biobag and Puxin digester design models achieved 82.1 and 73.7 % preference in comparison to other digester technologies for scenarios 1 and 2, respectively. The Biobag digester technology achieved the highest ranking, which is consistent with the significant cost advantage and technical characteristics of the technology. However, for those households with sufficient access to funds for the initial expenditure, the method identifies the Puxin digester as the most appropriate alternative, excluding cases where underground construction is not possible. The AGAMA BiogasPro digester was ranked in the second position in both scenarios. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the effect of changes in the assessment criteria weights and found the selected alternatives stable and robust. Finally, it can be concluded that the developed technology selection model contributed a knowledge-based framework to be used in various situations by different decision-makers, thereby providing a method applicable to particular local conditions to identify the most suitable technology choices.

This study assessed the effects of different grazing pressures (light, moderate and heavy) on rangeland condition and woody species diversity in northeastern Ethiopia. Rangeland condition was analyzed using common protocols for the assessment of semi-arid rangelands. A total of 4 grasses, 5 herbs, 1 sedge and 14 tree and/or shrub species were identified. Results show that grazing intensity had detrimental effects on condition of the rangeland, and caused undesirable changes in herbaceous species composition. The contribution of undesirable plants to herbaceous aboveground biomass was particularly high (40 %) compared to the 30 % contributed by highly desirable species. Nearly all measures of range condition were negatively affected by grazing. Grass composition, number of seedlings and age distribution, basal and litter cover, soil erosion and compaction decreased significantly as grazing intensity increased. Species richness and diversity (Hill numbers) of woody plants were reduced significantly by grazing. The overall condition of the rangeland was generally poor. The pastoralists perceived that recurring droughts, heavy continuous grazing and inappropriate management interventions, and bush encroachment were the main contributing factors that led to overgrazing and rangeland deterioration in the area. In conclusion, our study shows that livestock grazing in northeastern Ethiopia degrade range condition and woody vegetation, and its effects are sever under moderate and heavy grazing. Management measures such as resting of the rangelands preferably with stock exclusions for 6–12 months or protecting heavily degraded or sensitive areas from livestock activity and reseeding may be the viable options to mitigate declines in range conditions.

This study investigates the effect of institutional quality on agricultural value added in East Africa. It uses a panel dataset spanning from 2000 to 2020, taken from seven East African countries. The data obtained from the World Bank, Mo Ibrahim Foundation, and FAO databases were analyzed using the bias-corrected LSDV model. The results show that voice and accountability has a negative significant effect on regional agricultural value-added, while government effectiveness has a positive significant effect on regional agricultural value-added. Besides, higher per capita gross domestic product, a lower proportion of rural population, and a higher proportion of education expenditure appeared to have significant incremental effects on agricultural value-added. The results imply that institutional quality has a vital role in dictating the growth of agricultural value-added in East Africa. In this region, effective institutions increase agricultural value-added. Governments and other development practitioners should thus work to enhance the effectiveness of the related institutions in the region. Strengthening and improving the performance of such institutions is essential for a sustained increase in agricultural value-added. This would be more operational if combined with increased expenditure in education and the low size of the rural population.

The current study was designed to examine the Shelf life extension ability and antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extracts processed from Moringa stenopetale, Artemesia anua and Mentha Spicata. The raw milk and preservative plants was collected from Chencha woreda, Arba Minch. Purposive sampling techniques were used for collection of milk and plant samples. The crude extracts were isolated from three plant species using Soxhlet extraction method and characterized for the presence of bio-active compounds qualitatively and quantitatively. He accelerated shelf-life testing method was used to estimate the shelf-life of milk samples. Deterioration was tracked using measurements of the peroxide values and sensory characteristics. The DPPH free radical scavenging assay was used to determine the antioxidant capacity of various extracts, and the absorbance was measured at 517 nm. Mentha Spicata had the highest TPC value of 2.842 ± 0.109 mg GAE/g, while Moringa stenopetale had the lowest at 0.285± 0.0098 mg GAE/g. Similarly, Moringa stenopetale had the greatest TTC value of 69.86 ± 1.25 mg QE/g, while Mentha Spicata had the lowest at 46.2 ± 0.7 mg QE/g. The extracts of Moringa stenopetale, Artemesia anua, and Mentha Spicata showed good antioxidant activities, with IC50 values of 39.490 ± 0.029, 61.189± 0.058, and 68.062± 0.014 g/mL, respectively. The shelf-life of the milk sample improved with Moringa stenopetale was 6.99 days at 27 °C. Generally, Moringa stenopetale had the longest shelf life of all the plant extracts tested for milk samples.

In Ethiopia, national wide soil and water conservation (SWC) is going on since 2010/11in all agro-climatic zones and farming systems. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of soil bund on soil physico-chemical properties and factors determining farmers' decision on the adoption of SWC technologies in a watershed located in the sub-humid climate of southwest Ethiopia. Two sub-watersheds, namely Nada and Gulufa in the Gilgel Gibe I catchment, were selected for this study. Thirty-six soil samples were collected from non-conserved croplands and croplands conserved with soil bunds (older than 4 years) at three slope positions, namely lower (5–10%), middle (10–15%), and upper (>15%). Both composite and undisturbed top soil (0–30 cm) samples were collected and soil physicochemical properties were determined following standard laboratory procedures. The generated soil physicochemical data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the mean separation was carried out by the Tukey test using R-version 3.5.2. Fungal diseases are among the biotic factors limiting the production of faba bean in Ethiopia. The objective of this study was to isolate and identify seedborne mycoflora associated with faba bean seed samples, determine their effects on seed germination and disease transmission, and evaluate the antimicrobial activities of seven plant extracts and four Trichoderma spp. against the pathogen isolated from the seed. Fifty seed samples were collected from different farmers’ saved seeds of five major faba bean-producing varieties of the Ambo district and were tested by agar plate methods as recommended by the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). A total of 7 fungal species belonging to 6 genera, viz. Fusarium oxysporum (Schlechlendahl), Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc, Aspergillus spp. Penicillium spp. Botrytis spp. Rhizoctonia solani (Kühn) and Alternaria spp. were isolated and identified. Among these, Fusarium spp., Aspergillus spp, and Penicillium spp. were the most predominant fungi in all seed samples. Seed-to-seedling transmission test results confirmed that F. oxysporum, F. solani and R. solani were major causal pathogens that caused root rot and damping-off disease in faba beans and were transmitted from seeds to seedlings. A higher germination rate was observed in Golja-GF2 (97%), and a lower germination rate was observed in Kure Gatira-KF8 (81%). A study on in vitro evaluation of plant extract and Trichoderma spp. against F. oxysporum, F. solani and R. solani revealed that plant extracts at 5%, 10% and 20% concentrations significantly inhibited the mycelial growth of all tested fungi. Inhibitory effects on the three tested fungi (R. solani, F. solani and F. oxysporum) were recorded on T. longibrachiatum (87.91%), T. atroviride (86.87%), Trichoderma virens (86.16%) and T. harzianum (85.45%). The inhibitory effect of the aqueous plant extracts on mycelial growth increased with an increase in concentration, and the hot water extracts showed higher effects compared to the cold water extract in all tested fungi. This study showed that the highest inhibitory effect of Allium sativum L. extracted at a 20% concentration against mycelial growth inhibition of the three test fungi (F. oxysporum, R. solani and F. solani) was 84.60%, 83.61% and 83.47%, respectively. However, Nicandra physalodes (L.) Gaertn.) extracts at the same concentration showed the lowest inhibitory effects on the three tested fungi (74.94%, 73.94% and 73.24%).

Ziziphus mauritiana is used as food and medicine. It is very nutritive and contains high amounts of calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin C, and beta-carotene. To choose an appropriate technique for fruit preservation, this study evaluated the effect of temperature and time on the nutritional and anti-nutritional qualities of Ziziphus mauritiana fruit harvested from Kobo Woreda in North-Eastern Ethiopia. This study assessed the impact of preservation parameters on the nutritional and anti-nutritional properties of Ziziphus mauritiana fruit, such as storage temperature and preservation day (time). Ziziphus mauritiana fruit was also analyzed to evaluate storage temperature and preservation day on its nutritional and antinutritional composition and found moisture content (5.25–10.99%), ash content (4.74–10.70%), crude fiber (3.81–17.88), fat (0.49–2.16), nitrogen content (1.01–1.8%), protein content (6.33–11.27), phytate content (67.27–659.33 mg/100 g m), and tannin content (3842.46–16577.80 mg/100 g m). The findings revealed that both individual and interaction effects were highly significant differences (p-value, 0.0001) in each nutritional and antinutritional content of the fruit. The results of this study showed that it was possible to store Ziziphus mauritiana fruit using plastic bags (High-Density Polyethylene Bags), and further deep-freezing the fruit had the best effect on preserving it in its fresh state (without damage) for up to 45 days.

The availability of bee forage limits honeybee productivity and is very important for beekeepers. Therefore, the current study aimed to identify the major botanical resources of honeybee, A. mellifera scutellata, in Southwest Ethiopia. Between October 2019 and October 2020, 69 group discussions (8–12 beekeepers), field observations, and pollen analysis were used to collect data. A total of 72 honey samples were collected from five districts at different seasons for pollen analysis. Most of the honey samples tested (93.06%) were multifloral, while 6.94% were monofloral. Melissopalynological analysis indicated that Eucalyptus camaldulensis (52.02%) was the predominant pollen type and is considered monofloral honey. Terminalia spp. (25.96%), Guizotia spp. (17.80%), and Bidens spp. (17.61%) were secondary pollen types and classified as multifloral honey. Terminalia spp., Guizotia spp., Vernonia spp., Bidens ssp., Plantago spp., and E. camaldulensis were pollen types recorded in honey samples in all agroecologies. Beekeepers ranked Schefflera abyssinica, Vernonia amygdalina, and Cordia africana as the first source of pollen and nectar for honeybees in highland, midland, and lowland, respectively. Background: Self-medication is a treatment based on symptoms without prescription and medical consultation. Despite being one of the critical practices that impose a harmful effect on the fetus and the woman herself, evidence on its practice and associated factors are not well-documented. This study, therefore, assessed the self-medication practice and associated factors among pregnant women in Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia. Methods: An institutionally based cross-sectional study was conducted at public health institutions in Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia by recruiting a total of 408 pregnant women using a systematic random sampling technique between March 2019 and April 2019. We used the Antenatal care (ANC) registry as a sampling frame. A pre-tested, structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire used to depict Self-medication practice and associated factors. Data entered using Epi-data and analyzed by SPSS 23.0. Results: The overall prevalence of self-medication was 14.9% (95% CI:11–18). The odds of using self-medication may decreased by 75% for women who were in their third trimester (AOR = 0.25, 95% CI: 0.10, 0.64). However, the odds of practicing increased by 13-folds among pregnant women reported earlier (previous) self-medication experience (AOR = 13.62, 95% CI: 6.66–27.84). Conclusion: The prevalence of self-medication was high in the current study setting. Women's gestational period (third trimester) and earlier self-medication experience were associated with their current self-medication practice.

Using crop statistics (2020–21), publicly accessible data, standard procedures and literature, this study estimates the bioenergy potential of crop biomass residues in all regions of Ethiopia. The assessment considered 44 different types of residues from 30 different crops grown in Ethiopia. The country generates 69 569–105 522 kt y−1 gross crop residue biomass, of which 42 621–72 194 kt y−1 (or 61–68% of gross) are estimated as recoverable for bioenergy production. Amongst all the eleven regions, Oromia produces the highest amount of recoverable crop residue (45%) at region level. Cereals produce the highest recoverable crop residue (80%), followed by fruit crops (8%). Maize (36%) and sorghum (29%) are the two crops that produce the highest recoverable residue amongst all the crops. The estimated 559–1144 PJ y−1 bioenergy potential for Ethiopia from recoverable crop residue varies by region and ranges from 0,15 to 0,37 PJ y−1 (Afar) to 254–521 PJ y−1 (Oromia). Decentralized energy planning using crop residues in Ethiopian regions is expected to benefit from the produced data, which will help the country's overall growth in renewable energy. Biological and thermo-chemical conversion systems that are now in various stages of demonstration, commercialization, development, and research can convert biomass into energy. Performing research and development, establishing a database for local biomass resources, and developing a unified bioenergy unit and policy with all stakeholder's participation and engagement are all critical aspects of Ethiopia's sustainable bioenergy sector. Furthermore, value chain analysis of biomass feedstock, capacity building and awareness creation, and decentralized models development are all important for the country's bioenergy development.

The experiment is designed to evaluate the yield performance and profitability of mung bean varieties and to survey the innovation inclination of the farmers in the study area. The experiment was carried out in the potential environments of the North Shewa zone for two years during the main growing period. As experimental treatments, four mung bean cultivars of Rasa, NLV-1, Arkebe, and local varieties were used and evaluated across the four environments (two farmers’ fields per each environment). The experimental plots were arranged in a simple random block design. The result of the combined analysis of variance revealed that there was highly significant variation (p < 0.01) of grain yield among the genotypes while the environments and genotype by environment interaction are found insignificant. The highest mean grain yield of 1430.6 kg ha−1 was obtained from the improved variety Rasa, which was selected first by the farmers followed by the variety NVL-1. The results also confirmed the existence of a strong and statistically significant association between the actual values rank and the farmers' preference rank for both grain and biomass yields (R = .80, p < .001). Also, the variety Rasa provides the highest (686.6%) marginal rate of return on investment. Therefore, by considering the results of the grain yield performance, farmers’ selection, and the result of the partial budget analysis the variety Rasa was recommended for the study areas.

Epizootic lymphangitis (EZL) is a chronic, contagious disease of equids caused by the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum var. farciminosum. The disease is often prevalent in cart pulling equids in developing countries. This study was undertaken in Central and South Gondar zones of Amhara region, Ethiopia with the objectives of estimating the prevalence of EZL in cart pulling horses and mules and identifying the risk factors of the disease. Two towns, one high altitude and one mid altitude, from each of the two zones were included for the study. A total of 528 cart pulling horses and mules from the selected towns were examined clinically, screened by physical examination based on clinical signs of the disease and confirmed by microscopic mycological examination of the causative agent. Potential risk factors data were collected through observation of cart animals and interviewing of cart owners and were statistically evaluated using mixed effect logistic regression. An overall EZL prevalence of 12.5% (95% CI: 9.9–15.6%) was found. The prevalence was 19.9% (95% CI: 15.8–24.8%) in horses and 5.8% (95% CI: 2.4–13.2%) in mules. The disease was prevalent in mid altitude towns but was not detected in high altitude cold towns of the study zones. The risk factor analysis revealed that sharing of harness, mingling of cart animals in cart stations, communal housing and pre-existing trauma wound were risk factors of EZL in cart pulling horses and mules. The study generally indicated that EZL is a prevalent problem in mid altitude towns that endangers the livelihood of the cart owners and wellbeing of cart pulling equids. This warrants the initiation of a control strategy mainly focusing on improving management of cart pulling equids related to the identified risk factors to ameliorate the EZL problem in the study area.

Background: Anthrax is a zoonotic disease endemic in Ethiopia. Despite anthrax preventive measures are the key activities to control the disease, several outbreaks have occurred in Ethiopia recently. The objective of the study was therefore to assess the anthrax preventive practice and its associated factors among farmers in Farta district, South Gondar zone, Northwest Ethiopia. Method: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among farmers in Farta District from June 7 to 21/2020. A multi-stage sampling technique, with systematic random sampling, was used to select 1,338 study participants. Data were collected through a face-to-face interview using a structured questionnaire. The data were cleaned, coded, and entered into the Epi-data v 3.1 and then exported to SPSS v 23 for analysis. In the bi-variable regression analysis, the variables having a p-value of less than 0.2 were entered into a multivariable logistic regression to control the effect of confounding. Those independent variables with P-value less than 0.05 were taken as statistically significant factors associated with anthrax prevention practice. Results: The proportion of farmers who had good anthrax prevention practice was 35.8% [95% CI 33%, 38%]. Being female (AOR = 2.96; 95% CI 2.18, 4.02), able to read and write (AOR = 1.48, 95% CI 1.08, 2.03), time spent to arrive at a nearby veterinary clinic (AOR = 1.35; 95%CI 1.01, 1.79), heard about anthrax (AOR = 4.54; 95%CI 2.96, 6.95), and had a favorable attitude towards anthrax preventions (AOR = 3.70; 95%CI 2.77, 4.94) were significantly associated with anthrax prevention practice. Conclusions: The practice of anthrax prevention was low. Sex, educational status, time spent to arrive at the nearby veterinary clinic, knowledge about anthrax, and attitude towards anthrax prevention were significantly associated with anthrax prevention practice. Health education to create a favorable attitude and the establishment of veterinary clinics in the nearby locations are recommended to improve anthrax preventive practices in the study area.

Introduction: Malnutrition is a serious problem that causes high morbidity and mortality among cancer patients. There was no sufficient empirical evidence on the prevalence of malnutrition and associated factors among adult cancer hospitalized patients in Ethiopia. Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of malnutrition among adult cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in cancer center, Ethiopia 2019. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among a sample of 281 patients selected using systematic sampling among cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Data were collected by patient interviews and chart reviews using a structured questioner adapted from a subjective global assessment tool. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 24.0. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution, mean, median, and standard deviation were used to describe characteristics. Bivariate and multivariable analyses using logistic regression models were used. Result: Of the 281 participating patients, 58.2% had malnutrition, which was higher among females (51.6%) than males (48.4%). The mean body mass index was 20.24 ± 3.6. Of all, 41.9% had moderate weight loss, 21.1% had severe weight loss and 52.3% had weight loss in the past two weeks. Stage four cancer (AOR = 7.2, 95% CI: 1.3–38.5), loss of appetite (AOR = 4.5, 95% CI; 1.5–17.2) and diarrhea (AOR = 7.8, 95% CI: 2.95–20.5) were significantly associated with malnutrition. Conclusion: The prevalence of malnutrition among cancer patients who receive chemotherapy was high. Stage of cancer, appetite loss, and presence of diarrhea was found to be significant factors for malnutrition.

Background: Substance use during pregnancy mainly khat chewing (20%) and alcohol drinking (18.1%) are commonly practiced in Ethiopia. However, the effect of using these substances has not been studied nationally yet. Thus, this study was aimed to examine national evidence about the effect of substance use during pregnancy on birth outcome in the country, 2020. Methods: Primary studies were accessed through Google scholar, HINARI, SCOPUS and PubMed databases. The methodological and evidence quality of the included studies were critically appraised by the modified Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment tool scale adapted for observational studies. From eligible studies, two authors extracted author/year, study region, study design, sample size and reported effect of antenatal substance use on birth outcome on an excel spreadsheet. During critical appraisal and data extraction, disagreements between the two authors were resolved by the involvement of a third author. The extracted data were then exported to stata version 14. Effect sizes were pooled using the fixed-effects model due to homogenous primary studies (I2 = 0.0%). Presence of publication bias was detected from asymmetry of funnel plot and statistically significant Egger's test (p = 0.000). Results: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, a total of 5,343 mother-neonate pairs were included from 15 studies. Alcohol, khat, cigarette and narghile were used during pregnancy, and significant adverse birth outcomes attributable to these substances were reported. From the pooled effect of alcohol use, drinking mothers were twice (95%CI: AOR = 2.16; 1.16, 3.17) likely to have newborns with birth defect; 9 times (95% CI: AOR = 9.39; 2.84, 15.94) more prone to own low birth weight neonates; and 1.9 times more prone to deliver preterm neonates (95% CI: AOR = 1.93; 0.52, 3.33) than the nondrinkers. Khat users were 2.4 times (95%CI: AOR = 2.4; 1.11, 5.19) more likely to have congenitally defected neonates; and 3.1 times (95%CI: AOR = 3.19; 1.01, 5.37) more risked to possess low birth weight neonates. Furthermore, antenatal cigarette smokers (95% CI: AOR = 4.36 (1.75, 6.98)) and narghile users (95% CI: AOR = 20.1; 3.94, 103) were at 4 and 20 times more likelihood of having low birth weight neonates as compared to their counterparts. Conclusion: Prematurity, low birth weight and congenital malformation were the investigated adverse effects of antenatal substance use in Ethiopia. Therefore, the existing public health efforts should be encouraged to help women stop using these substances completely before pregnancy. Moreover, increasing public awareness about the potential negative impacts of substance use during pregnancy on birth outcome would be of greatest importance for comprehensive prevention of the problem.

A selective and sensitive electrochemical method based on glassy carbon electrode modified with poly(malachite green) was developed for determination of tetracycline in pharmaceutical capsule formulation. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy using [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- as a probe were used to characterize the potentiodynamiclly deposited poly(malachite green) on the surface of glassy carbon electrode. In contrast to the unmodified glassy carbon electrode, the fabricated poly(malachite green) modified glassy carbon electrode showed catalytic property towards two steps irreversible oxidation of tetracycline. Better correlation of the oxidative peak current with the scan rate than with the square root of scan rate supported by slope of 0.60 for log(current) versus log(scan rate) indicated that the oxidation reaction of tetracycline at the modified electrode was predominantly controlled by electron exchange step at the solution polymer interface. Under optimized solution pH, and accumulation parameters, the square wave adsorptive anodic striping peak current response of the modified electrode showed linear dependence on concentration of tetracycline in the range 5–100 μM with determination coefficient, method detection limit, and quantification limit of 0.99588, 1.6 μM, and 5.3 μM, respectively. The tetracycline content of a capsule sample claimed to have 250 mg/capsule was found to be 250.53 mg/capsule with 0.21% deviation. Excellent spike recovery result of 99.80%, and 98.49–99.78% recovery of tetracycline in capsule sample in the presence of 50–200% of UA, AA, and ampicillin validated the applicability of the method for determination of tetracycline in real samples with complex matrix like capsule formulations.

Soil plays a crucial role in food safety as it determines the composition of food at the beginning of the food chain. However, the quality of soil resources in terms of their potential impact on human health caused by harmful elements is poorly understood in Ethiopia due to lack of reliable and appropriate experimental data. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to evaluate trace metal accumulation in soils amended with brewery spent diatomite sludge (BSDS) in comparison to control, recommended inorganic fertilizers (RIF) and integrated BSDS & RIF (BSDS:RIF). Trace metals uptake by wheat crop and the degree of soil contamination, and human health risk were investigated. BSDS application significantly increased the concentration of trace metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Ni) in soil compared to that in the control, the RIF, and BSDS:RIF applications. It also significantly increased the concentration of Cu, Zn, Pb and Ni in the wheat grain compared to that in the control and the RIF, but the increase was not significantly different from that in BSDS:RIF amendment. All trace metal concentrations in soil and wheat grain (except Pb in wheat grain) were below the maximum permissible limits in some European countries of agricultural soils, and the maximum permissible limit of FAO/WHO. Background: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of different stages of dengue infection on immune cell counts among dengue patients and to compare them with cases of non-dengue febrile illness., Methods: The recruited patients were divided into two groups: the first group served as a control (n = 55), representing non-dengue febrile illness, and the second group was identified as dengue febrile illness (n = 149), which was further divided into three groups based on infection stage. Blood samples were collected from the selected patients and subjected to blood cell component analysis. To find IgG and IgM as well as the dengue virus non-structural antigen-1 (NS1), an immunochromatographic test (ICT) kit was utilized. Additionally, a hematological analyzer was used to determine complete blood cell counts (CBC). Data was thoroughly analyzed using Graph Pad Prism 6 software. The differences in means of different groups were calculated by applying the student's t-test., Results: The findings revealed the presence of severe leucopenia and thrombocytopenia at stages 1 and 2, accompanied by lymphopenia at stage 1. Group comparisons indicated that only teenagers exhibited a significantly lower white blood cell count compared to older individuals, while no significant differences were observed in lymphocytes, platelets, and monocytes across all age groups. Comparing different age groups of normal individuals to dengue-infected patients, the results unveiled that leucopenia was most severe in adults, followed by teenagers and children, with no significant difference in the elderly. Furthermore, adults showed the greatest degree of thrombocytopenia, followed by teens and kids, with the elderly showing the greatest degree of thrombocytopenia. Adults and teens showed extreme neutrophilia, whereas young children and the elderly showed no discernible abnormalities. Elderly patients experienced a marked decrease in monocyte count, a phenomenon not observed in other age groups., Conclusion: In conclusion both, leucopenia & thrombocytopenia, are most severe in stages 1 and 2, whereas neutrophilia & lymphopenia are predominantly severe in stage 1. The research involves developing eco-friendly polymer composites by combining synthetic unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) with treated and untreated leather fibers (LF), cow hair fibers (CHF), and chicken feather fibers (CFF). By using these natural fibers instead of synthetic polymer, we aim to reduce the environmental impact while finding new purposes for waste materials from the poultry and tannery industries which would otherwise end up in garbage. The fibers were incorporated into the resin matrix at various weight percentages such as 2, 5, 7, 10, 12, and 15 % (w/w). Additionally, the properties of composites were improved by the addition of different types of inorganic nanoparticles, like CaCO 3, Al 2 O 3 , and ZnO to the UPR matrix. These composites where inorganic materials were added as filler revealed better results than the neat composites. The composites showed the maximum overall mechanical properties in the bending modulus (BM), bending strength (BS), tensile modulus (TM), and tensile strength (TS) when 5 % of cow hair and chicken feather mixed fiber was used and ZnO was added as filler compared to the other composites. The highest values 4400.415, 68.91, 1788.74, and 34.95 N/mm 2 of BM, BS, TM, and TS respectively, were found for the CFF + CHF + UPR + ZnO composite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) supported mechanical rather than chemical connections between fiber and UPR. Trees and shrubs maintain carbon reserves to support their functions during periods when metabolic demand exceeds carbon supply, such as during the dormant season. To gain a better understanding of carbon storage and utilisation dynamics of eight woody plant species in temperate Central Europe, bud scale and leaf samples were collected to determine the radiocarbon age of fresh sprouts in trees and shrubs, at three background sites avoiding local emissions that may influence affect the observed 14 C/ 12 C ratio. The accelerator mass spectrometry-based bomb-radiocarbon approach, to determine the age of the mobilized carbon in the plant bud samples from storage, was complemented by stable carbon isotope measurements. The bomb-radiocarbon dating technique was used to determine the age of the samples, while a northern hemispheric atmosphere 14 CO 2 dataset was used to calibrate the radiocarbon ages of the plant samples. The youngest observed calibrated radiocarbon age of the buds was over 4 years, and the oldest was even 9 years old. There was no significant difference between the ages of bud scales and embryonal leaf laminas. Our results show that there is a considerable amount of stored older carbon in the woody stems that can be used to produce buds in spring, which is a complex mixture of stored carbon of different ages, but there is no relationship between the radiocarbon age and the stable carbon isotope composition. Solanum anguivi Lam. fruits (SALF) possess bioactive compounds, such as phenolics, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, and vitamin C, that are beneficial for preventing oxidative stress-related diseases. It has been documented that ripeness stage influences the nutritional quality of fruits. However, there is limited information on the effect of the ripeness stages (unripe, yellow, orange and red) on the bioactive compounds' contents (BCC) and antioxidant activity (AA) of SALF. We investigated the effect of ripening on the BCC and AA of different SALF accessions. Spectrophotometry was used to determine SALF's total contents of phenolics, flavonoids, saponins, vitamin C, and AA and gravimetry for total alkaloids. The AA was determined as free radical scavenging activity (FRSC) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The total phenolics (7.6-22.6 mg gallic acid equivalent/g DW), flavonoids (1.3-4.1 mg quercetin equivalent (QE)/g DW), saponins (44.8-152.5 mg diosgenin equivalent/g DW), vitamin C (2.2-6.4 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/g DW), alkaloids (141.2-296.9 mg/g DW), FRSC (1.5-66.2 %) and TAC (0.1-14.2 mg QE/g DW) significantly differed among the ripeness stages. Fruits in the unripe stage were rich in phenolics, flavonoids, and AA; in the red stage in alkaloids and vitamin C; and in the orange stage, in saponins and flavonoids. The AA had strong positive correlations with total flavonoids and phenolics (r = 0.72 and 0.81, respectively) and a moderate negative correlation with total alkaloids (r = -0.67). Overall, unripe stage fruits had the highest AA and total phenolics and thus may have the highest health-promoting properties. The utilization of natural fiber reinforced polymer composites is growing fast in numerous sectors. In this study, the effect of the addition of short date palm mat (DPM) fibers in polystyrene matrix on the physico-mechanical and thermal properties were studied. Short DPM fiber reinforced polystyrene composites were produced by compression moulding process and the fiber content was 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 wt%. Physico-mechanical and thermal properties were examined. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis of the composites were also done. The findings from the investigates exposed that the composites with 10 % fiber content showed improved mechanical and thermal characteristics as compared to other composites. The morphological analysis also supported the results where good interfacial bonding among fiber and polystyrene matrix was found for the composites with 10 % fiber content. The optimized (10 % fiber content) composites were exposed to gamma radiation (2.5-7.5 kGy) and the best result was found at 5.0 kGy radiation dose. Recent climate change (CC) scenarios from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) have just been released in coarse resolution. Deep learning (DL) based on statistical downscaling has recently been used, but more research is needed, particularly in arid regions, because little is known about their suitability for extrapolating future CC scenarios. Here we analyzed this issue by downscaling maximum, and minimum temperature over the Egyptian domain based on one General Circulation Model (GCM) as CanESM5 and two shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) as SSP4.5 and SSP8.5 from CMIP6 using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) herein after called CNNSD. The downscaled maximum and minimum temperatures based CNNSD was able to reproduce the observed climate over historical and future periods at a finer resolution (0.1°), reducing the biases exhibited by the original scenario. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time CNN has been used to downscale CMIP6 scenarios, particularly in arid regions. The downscaled analysis showed that maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to rise by 4.8 °C and 4.0 °C, respectively, in the future (2015-2100), compared to the historical period, under the moderate scenario (SSP4.5). Meanwhile, under the Fossil-fueled Development scenario (SSP8.5), these values will rise by 6.3 °C and 4.2 °C, respectively as analyzed by the CNNSD. The developed approach could be used not only in Egypt but also in other developing countries, which are especially vulnerable to climate change and has a scarcity of related research. The established downscaled approach's supply can be used to provide climate services, as a driver for impact studies and adaptation decisions, and as information for policy development. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the medical field is increasing and is expected to shape future clinical practice and job security. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the opinions and attitudes of practicing physicians in Bahrain regarding the benefits and drawbacks of AI for their future daily practice. A cross-sectional survey of practicing physicians with a minimum of five years' experience across the main secondary and tertiary care hospitals in Bahrain was conducted. An online questionnaire was used to collect data on demographics, knowledge of AI, attitudes towards the use of AI in 10 tasks of daily clinical practice, and opinions on the benefits and drawbacks of AI. A total of 114 physicians participated in the survey. Among them, 43 (37.7%) were registered psychiatrists, 15 (13.2%) were pathologists, 17 (14.9%) were radiologists, and 39 (34.2%) were surgical specialists. The participants' attitudes were overall positive towards AI. Pathologists were particularly in favor of using AI to "Formulate personalized medication and/or treatment plans for patients" and to "Interview patients in a range of settings to obtain medical history." Most participants agreed that AI would reduce the time needed to establish a diagnosis and negatively affect employment rates. There were no correlations between the responses and the participants' age, gender, years of experience, or AI knowledge. This study demonstrates that the attitudes towards the use of AI in medicine among practicing physicians in Bahrain are similar to those of physicians in developed countries in that they are positive and welcoming of AI implementation in practice. The performance of Temperature Control System (TCS), a sub-system of an advanced fighter ECS (Environmental Control System) is studied for its operations both in on-ground and in-air conditions. The standard Bootstrap air cycle system is considered with ACM (Air Cycle Machine) as the main component, which consists of a compressor and a turbine, to produce the cold air. ECS, in particular TCS, is responsible in maintaining the required cockpit or cabin temperature. As the fighter aircraft doesn't require cabin air recirculation, the cabin temperature depends solely on the supply air thermal conditions. The cabin temperature regulation is realized by controlling the supply conditions by maintaining required temperature at ACM outlet and at the entrance duct to the cabin. These temperatures are critical parameters that necessitates appropriate controller to keep the cabin in a good comfortable state. ECS of a fighter aircraft is highly complex and nonlinear than commercial aircraft. The control logics applied, on this system, will drive the actuators or TCVs (Temperature Control Valves) to keep the requisite cabin temperature. The control logics applied on the controller to be simple and appropriate to meet the requirements of fighter aircraft ECS. This shall minimize the control cycle oscillation and subsequent supply air temperature instabilities. This paper explains novel cabin temperature control schemes and their influence on the ECS performance especially during the transient operation. The complete architecture of the control schemes along with system components are modelled in AMESim and the comparison is made for different operating conditions. Fatigue and rapid exhaustion are common complaints among construction workers, as a result of high-effort levels, physical overexertion, weather and long physically demanding work hours. This study aimed to fortify cloudy apple juice with riboflavin (vitamin B2) to evaluate changes in chemical composition, antioxidant activity and volatile compounds in the fortified juice and to study its effect on the volunteer construction workers complaining of fatigue resulting from demanding physical duties. Analysis of volatile compounds in the fortified cloudy apple juice using Gas Chromatography and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry identified thirty-four volatile compounds including esters, alcohols, aldehydes and acids. The most predominant volatile compounds were alcohols followed by esters in both the control and fortified samples. We studied the effect of the supplementation of riboflavin-fortified cloudy apple juice versus conventional cloudy apple juice on the anthropometric parameters, the scores of two fatigue questionnaires (Checklist Individual Strength and Fatigue Severity Scale) and antioxidants biomarkers among young Egyptian male construction workers. This study revealed that consumption of 1.3 mg of riboflavin-fortified cloudy apple juice per day for twenty-eight days significantly improved their metabolism, with a decrease in mean body fat percentage and an increase in body muscle mass without statistically significant differences, the fortified juice significantly improved the fatigue questionnaires' scores. Moreover, the fortified supplement had a substantial change in antioxidant activity; there was significant increase in the plasma total antioxidant capacity (+74.19 %change) and catalase enzyme (+54.65 %change) with a significant decrease in the serum malondialdehyde level (-53.78 %change). When compared to the administration of conventional cloudy apple juice, although there was a significant decrease in serum malondialdehyde level (-4.63 %change) at the end of the study, only the subjective fatigue subscale of the CIS fatigue score significantly decreased among the construction workers (-24.61 %change). Exploration and determination of the hydro-geo-electrical characteristics of an aquifer can be done by applying the forward (initial multi-layers), and the inverse (final layered) models for interpreting the DC-resistivity (VES) and TEM data. So, 22 VES using Schlumberger configuration (AB/2 = 500-700m) and 12 TEMS using in-loop configuration (square, ℓ = 200m) were carried out at the West El-Minia selected area for studying the Oligocene Clastic and Carbonate aquifers. VESs were interpreted for studying the shallow resistive and conductive layers, as well as faults delineation. TEMs were interpreted for shallow and deep conductive layers discrimination. The VES and TEM inverse models were examined with the drilling data and construed the subsurface into four units; dry Oligocene Clastics (173-467 Ω.m), dry limestone (273-374 Ω.m), saturated Oligocene Clastics (Oligocene aquifer) (2-107 Ω.m), then saturated fractured Eocene limestone to shaly limestone (5-188 Ω.m). Groundwater depths (62-131m) and thicknesses variation were estimated, as well as the faults location. Two hydro-geo-electrical sections were built for simulating the resistivity values and their connotations, and managing in choosing the promised locations for drilling wells. The ramp-off time effect was studied and found that ∼50-∼100m shallow high resistive thickness didn't defined from the TEM data in which the max penetration depth was 672m. The available well logging data were analysed to reveal the pure saturated zones, the volume of shale of 0%-100% and the porosity values of ∼9%-∼35% in the Oligocene aquifer and of ∼4%-∼15.5% in the carbonate aquifer. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized as a gathering of various metabolic disorders, for example, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and obesity. The present research was conducted to prepare fortified almond milk as functional beverages and evaluate their protective effect against MetS and associated hepatic and vascular complications. Three beverages (I, II, and III) were prepared by fortification almond milk with carrot juice or powder of quinoa seeds and carrot juice or oat powder and banana juice. The sensory attributes, physicochemical properties, bioactive compounds (total phenolic, beta-carotene, tocopherols) and B-complex vitamins were determined in the beverages. In-vitro antioxidant activity of the beverages was assessed. MetS was induced in rats via feeding on high-fat high-fructose diet (HFHF). The biochemical (lipid profile, oxidative stress, liver, and kidney functions), nutritional and histopathological parameters were assessed in rats. The beverage I recorded the highest sensory attributes' scores. The physicochemical properties of the beverages revealed that acidity and viscosity of all beverages ranged from 4.55 to 4.88 and from 40 to 59, respectively. The beverage I showed the highest content of alpha-tocopherol (14.994 μg/g) and beta-carotene (104.541 μg/g), while the beverage II showed the highest content of gamma-tocopherol (0.557 μg/g), folic acid (0.806 μg/g), and total phenols (147.43 μg GAE/g). The results of animals revealed that the beverage II was the most promising in attenuation levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, malondialdehyde, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Also, the beverage II was the superior in the protection of the liver and heart tissues as reflected by the histopathological examination findings. Jute fabrics and unidirectional jute fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) based composites were prepared successfully by compression molding technique. The unidirectional jute fiber was treated with Reactive Orange HB® and Deep Blue LW® dye to investigate physico-mechanical properties. The Reactive Orange HB® treated composites showed relatively better mechanical properties than the Deep Blue LW® treated composites. The jute fiber-based composites showed higher mechanical properties than that of jute-based fabrics. The polypropylene-based composites showed better mechanical properties than that of LLDPE. The variations of mechanical properties were also observed. The highest mechanical properties were at -18 °C and lowest at 50 °C. Water absorbent, SEM and FT-IR analysis of the composite was also carried out.
