This study investigates the impact of incorporating lime mud (LM) as a filler material to develop sustainable, cementless ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) by replacing silica powder (SP) and silica sand (SS) at varying percentages. Flowability analysis reveals that LM, with its distinctive particle size, influences flow characteristics differently at different replacement levels. Compressive strength was improved by 5.4% with 30% SP replacement, showcasing the role of LM in nucleation, as well as its particle size advantage. The heat of hydration analysis indicates that LM likely influences the early curing stages, enhancing reactivity and nucleation. TGA analysis also confirms that LM plays a role in hydration reaction, influencing weight loss and hydration peaks. The mercury intrusion porosimeter results show the impact of LM on pore distribution, with 30% for SP and 50% for SS replacements, favoring denser matrices. Life cycle assessment (LCA) demonstrates reduced CO 2 emissions and favorable environmental performance, highlighting the sustainability potential of LM replacements. • Titanate coupling agents reduce particle-polyol mixture viscosity more than 2 times. • Titanate coupling agents form hydrophobic monomolecular layer on the particle surface. • Coupled paper waste particles increase compressive and tensile strengths. • Coupled paper waste particles initiate nucleation process in particle-polyol mixture. Current efforts are focused on transforming renewable resources into advantageous polymers and the utilisation of waste for the same application and others. However, the utilisation of waste into polymer systems causes forming mixtures with high viscosities; therefore, this study analyses different types of titanate coupling agents (TCAs), TCA-L44, TCA-L38 and TCA-K44, and their effects on the rheology of bio-based polyol premixes filled with paper waste particles and the physical-mechanical properties and microstructures of polyurethane foams (RPUFs). It is found that TCAs improve the dynamic viscosity of polyol premixes by a factor of two. Based on the scattering of the apparent density results, TCA-L44 and TCA-K44, at amounts of 1–3 wt%, ensure an even distribution of waste particles, while TCA-L38 does not show evidence of coupling. Compared to RPUF without TCAs, the apparent density increased on average from ∼65 to ∼69 kg/m3 for TCA-L44, to ∼71 kg/m3 for TCA-L38 and to 69 kg/m3, indicating a weak cross-link effect. The compressive strength increases by an average of 6.5–9.1% and the tensile strength increases by 26.0–42.2% when TCA-K44 is used, while the water absorption decreases by up to ∼62% and the water vapour diffusion resistance factor decreases by ∼39% when TCA-L44 is used. • Lignin additive extracted using H 2 SO 4 (L-S) had high phenolic content and pH value. • Asphalt with L-S additive had the lowest reduction of crossover modulus due to aging. • Incorporating L-S into asphalt reduces the increase of asphaltene fraction due to aging. • FTIR test is more sensitive in measuring the lignin antioxidant performance than DSR and GPC. The main objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of lignin bio-additives derived from black liquor paper pulp as asphalt antioxidants. Two lignin bio-additives, H-L and S-L, were developed by acidifying black liquor with hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. The laboratory aging procedures used in this study included the Rolling Thin Film Oven and the Ultraviolet Chamber methods. The crossover modulus (|G* c |) and linear amplitude sweep (LAS) were measured using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR). Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) was also used to characterize the molecular size distribution of the asphalt binder. The combination of carbonyl and sulfoxide aging indices was measured using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The S-L modified binder (S-LMB) demonstrated superior aging resistance compared to both the control binder (CB) and the H-L modified binder (H-LMB) by exhibiting the lowest reduction in |G* c |. Furthermore, the LAS test results showed that S-LMB provided the best resistance to aging due to the lowest decrease in fatigue life with age conditioning, followed by CB and H-LMB, with rates of 11%, 13%, and 16%, respectively. The GPC results also confirmed the efficacy of the S-L bio-additive as an antioxidant, exhibiting the lowest increment in asphaltene proportion attributed to age conditioning. The FTIR measurements successfully captured the antioxidant capability of both H-L and S-L bio-additives, with S-L performing better than H-L. Green liquor dregs wastes coming from pulp and paper production are currently disposed in landfills at a huge cost for industry and the environment. In this work, a novel and more sustainable waste management strategy is proposed. Dregs were used for the first time as fine filler in the production of biomass fly ash-based geopolymeric mortars. The influence of the dregs incorporation amount on the fresh (geopolymer kinetics and mortars workability) and hardened-state (mechanical resistance, water absorption and capillary water absorption) properties of the mortars was evaluated. Although dregs incorporation reduce the flow workability (up to 19%), their presence and amount did not significantly alter the geopolymerization kinetics. Additionally dregs-containing mortars exhibited enhanced tensile (up to 71%) and compressive strength (up to 34%), and lower water absorption in comparison with the reference mortar. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using dregs as fine filler in geopolymers production. This paper reports the results of an exploratory experimental study to manufacture eco-friendly lightweight bricks through binary mix of paper mill sludge (PMS) and soil. The pre-manufacture activities include mineralogical, chemical, thermal and index properties characterisation of two kinds of soils (laterite and alluvial) and PMS. The mix ratio between PMS and soil was varied (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) and two firing temperatures 850 °C and 900 °C were tested in order to emulate the typical conditions of a kiln. The performance of incorporating PMS into the mix was tested by evaluating properties such as linear shrinkage, compressive strength, water absorption, mass loss on ignition, and bulk density of bricks as recommended by the relevant Indian and ASTM standard codes. X ray diffraction results confirmed that the addition of PMS does not show any phase transformation and only enhances the porosity thereby leading to weight reduction. Based on the results, an optimum mix of 10% PMS with both soil types was found suitable for brick production at a firing temperature of 900 °C. Lightweight bricks produced with addition of different additive materials such as expanded perlite (EP) and recycling paper sludge (RPS) waste have been accomplished by a pug mill. Porous fired bricks were produced by using organic and inorganic additives such as paper waste and expanded perlite as pore-makers. In the experimental study, the seventeen mixture sets were prepared with Box-Behnken experimental design procedure of two additive ratios and firing temperatures. The brick samples were produced with shaping by extrusion method and firing at 850, 950 and 1050 °C for two hours after drying. Physical characteristics such as bulk density, apparent porosity and water absorption, and also, compressive strength, thermal conductivity and microstructural properties of brick samples were studied. Influences of process parameters on brick properties were investigated with a detailed neuro-regression analysis. In conclusion, the best brick composition (10 % EP + 10 %RPS by weight) in terms of thermal conductivity corresponding to acceptable mechanical properties was optimized. Accordingly, the compressive strength values of all samples are around 10 to 27 MPa. Also, the samples with high additive content (especially 10 %RPS + 5 %EP sample) exhibited the lowest thermal conductivity value (0.432 W/mK) due to the low firing temperature. The aim of this study was to evaluate some physical and mechanical properties of the paper mill (PMS) and spruce planer shaving added cement boards. Also the effect of sludge type in consequence of waste water treatment technique on properties of wood-cement boards (WCB) was investigated. The wood/cement ratios were used as 1/3, based on the oven dry weight for the WCB manufacture. PMS was used up to 20% wt of total composite based on organic (wood) and inorganic (cement) amounts. Black sludge has shown more improvement than grey sludge on properties of WCBs, which indicates the anaerobic waste treatment technique is more effective for additive in WCB. The modulus of rupture and elasticity values of the WCBs with 5% of grey sludge, 5% and 10% of mixture of grey and black sludge were acceptable limits according to EN 634-2 standard. The mechanical strengths of all WCBs with black sludge were found above the specified EN standard. This suggests that PMS depending on sludge type may be used up to 20% wt of total composite weight for the commercial production of WCBs, which could expand the raw material base for this panel product. Due to increasing generation of solid wastes from papermaking industry, major concerns arise about the disposal of the solid wastes and their adverse impacts on environments, in which the disposal of paper sludge massively produced from paper mills has become one of the most serious solid waste problems worldwide. In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the feasibility and applicability of incorporating solid wastes from paper mills into controlled low strength material (CLSM), in which fly ash was used as a substitute for cement, bottom ash was added by partially replacing fine aggregate, and paper sludge was treated as a fibrous admixture. Results show that both fly ash and bottom ash could be effectively used in production of CLSM mixtures with desired performances. By limiting the amount of cement used in the mixture, the ultimate strength of CLSM could be controlled for easy excavation. Fly ash could effectively increase flowability of the mixture, thus improving self-compactibility. Both bottom ash and paper sludge had an adverse effect on the flowability. The strength of CLSM was reduced when a higher content of fly ash was incorporated to replace cement, while the strength was increased when more river sand was replaced with bottom ash. Due to a high water absorption and poor dispersibility of paper sludge, the CLSM made with additional paper sludge exhibited a relatively low flowability and a reduction in strength. Building materials drive the global economy, yet face severe environmental hurdles: resource depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste generation. In order to mitigate the impact from these challenges, authorities seek sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives as an urgent need. This study focuses on the utilization of as-received rejected contaminated fines (RCF) obtained from the yellow bins' waste (paper) recycling process, in brick production. Diverse tests assessed the brick performance, including compressive strength, absorption rate, thermal conductivity, 3D CT scanning for morphological analysis, and durability analysis. Additionally, a leachate analysis was performed to evaluate the environmental implications. Economic benefits, particularly the reduction of CO 2 emissions, were also evaluated. The findings confirmed that as-received waste can be utilized for fired clay brick production without the need for pulverization. The novel brick product made with as-received RCF waste exhibited superior thermal characteristics (up to a 31.25 % reduction compared to control bricks) while meeting the essential compliance requirements outlined by national standards. Moreover, each firing cycle led to a potential value of up to USD 158,460 through a reduction of 417 tonnes of CO 2 , resulting from a 9.5 % reduction in firing temperature (1000 °C). The results from this study offer valuable insights into the potential of using RCF waste as a sustainable alternative in the brick manufacturing industry. The purpose of this study is to investigate influence of calcination and cooling conditions on pozzolanic reactivity of waste paper sludge. Calcined paper sludge (CPS) is prepared by different temperatures of calcination, duration of calcination and cooling methods. Pozzolanic activity of CPS was investigated by using API (Assessed Pozzolanic Activity Index) and SAI (Strength Activity Index) in accordance with ASTM C618 -17 (KS L 5405) and consumption of Ca(OH) 2 hydrate in mortars with CPS in detail, and compared to that of commercial fly ash (FA) and blast furnace slag (BFS) used in the concrete industry. Results revealed CPS produced from waste paper sludge had excellent pozzolanic activity compared with commercial pozzolanic admixtures such as FA or BFS. Their pozzolanic activity was most excellent in calcination temperature of 700 °C, calcination duration of 2 h and cooling method of water quenching. SAI (%) of mortar with CPS produced under optimal conditions was 96% at 28 days of age, and satisfied the quality of fly ash (Class F) as specified in ASTM C618 -17 (KS L 5405). There was linear relation between API (%) and SAI (%) of mortars with CPS, and the correlation coefficient was relatively good as 0.8 at 28 days of age. In the paper, the impact of paper production waste (primary sludge, or PS) on the properties of cement pastes and mortars is discussed upon. Some specimens were formed with fine PS fraction that replaced a part of cement content in them (5%, 10%, 15%, or 20%); in other specimens, coarse fraction of sludge (2/4) was used and a part of content of fine filler (sand) was replaced by PS. The properties of mixtures, such as water content required for cement paste of normal consistence, the setting time, exothermic temperature, flow diameter and plunger penetration, were established. In addition, the properties of hardened mortar, such as its density, flexural strength and compressive strength, were established. The microstructure of hardened specimens was examined as well. It was found that PS retarded hydration processes and reduced exothermic temperature; in addition, it reduced the flow diameter and the plunger penetration. In the present work, unshredded waste newspaper based composites have been prepared in polyester resin matrix. Reinforcing material, waste newspaper is characterized by chemically, X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and tensile properties. Three different fibre content composite samples, namely 25%, 34%, and 50% (by weight) are prepared by hand lay-up techniques. Water absorption and thickness swelling tests are conducted by immersing composite samples in distilled water at room temperature. It is found that the percentage of moisture uptake and thickness swelling are increased as the fibre volume fraction is increased due to the high cellulose content. The tensile, flexural and interlaminar shear strength properties of water immersed samples are investigated and compared with dry composite samples. It is observed that after swelling the mechanical properties of composites are found to decrease with increase in percentage moisture uptake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research studies based on cement and aggregate replacement by lime sludge concludes that 10–30% lime sludge is gainfully utilized in sustainable concrete and mortar. Significant use of lime sludge in combination with supplementary cementitious materials such as silica fume, nanosilica and fly ash is recommended for the production of cement components and ceramics. Abstract: The use of paper-mill residuals in concrete formulations provides an alternative to landfill disposal. A response surface statistical methodology was carried out to model the influence on the slump and compressive strength of concrete containing paper-mill residuals with and without Class F fly ash replacement. The variables considered in this study included the water/cement ratio (w/c), paper-mill residual content and fly ash content to total cementitious material (FA/CM). The performance of the derived models to achieve good balance between the workability and compressive strength were further discussed by using the contour diagrams. Abstract: Cotton waste results from the mechanical processing of raw cotton in yarn mills. Recycle Paper Mills constitute 30% of total pulp and paper mill segment in India. With 85% average efficiency of Recycle Paper Mills, 15% waste is produced annually. Recycle Paper Mills waste and cotton waste has been utilized to make Waste Crete Bricks. It helps in solid waste management, generate additional revenue and help in earning carbon credits. Waste Crete Bricks with varying content of cotton waste (1–5wt.%), Recycle Paper Mills waste (89–85wt.%) and fixed content of Portland cement (10wt.%) have been prepared and tested as per IS 3495 (Part 1–3): 1992 standards. The characteristics of raw materials, which is the base material for Waste Crete Bricks, have been determined using XRF, TG–DTA, and SEM. TG–DTA indicate that bricks is thermally stable up to a temperature of 280°C while SEM monographs show its porous and fibrous nature. The bricks meet of IS 3495 (Part 1–3): 1992. Abstract: Sustainable recyclable paper and composite materials can be ideal choices for the construction of temporary structures for both exhibition spaces or for rapid-recovery shelters in emergency operations. The unique engineering and sustainable features of these structures need to be considered as an integral part of the design process from the conceptual phase. Engineering studies to analyze these structures should be as important as the overall artistic and architectural vision. This study investigates the weatherability of paper fiber reinforced ice (PFRI) as envelopes, including the changes in the sublimation mechanism and mechanical properties changes. The PFRI specimens were layered poured and exposed to nature. The sublimation rates, climatic parameters, and stress–strain data were recorded. The results suggest that PFRI sublimation is a dynamic process with cumulative effects. A calculation model is proposed to predict sublimation in engineering. Considering fibre escape, PFRI with 2% or 3% fibre content has better weatherability, with a 30% decrease in elastic modulus on the sunny side and a 15% decrease on the shaded side. Abstract: Recycle paper mills (RPM) contribute 30% of total pulp and paper mill segment in India. With 85% average efficiency of RPM, 5% waste (RPMW) is produced annually. RPMW which otherwise is land filled has been utilized to make construction bricks that serves a purpose of solid waste management, new revenue generation and earning carbon credits. RPMW-cement combination low carbon foot print bricks with varying composition of cement (0–20%wt) have been prepared and tested as per ASTM C 67-03a standards. RPMW has been characterized using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG–DTA), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). TG–DTA confirms thermal stability till 280°C whereas SEM monographs show the pores and fibrous nature. From experimentation it is observed that waste-create bricks (WCB) prepared using RPMW-cement combination is light weight, shock absorbing and meets compressive strength requirements of ASTM C 67-03a. This study's focus was to develop a potential pathway for recycling of the paper mill sludge compost (PMSC) in brick making. Composting reduces the paper mill sludge (PMS) moisture content considerably and shredding becomes easier. The addition of PMSC leads to an increase of porosities in bricks and makes them lighter, besides delivering energy to the firing process from burning organics. Lighter construction materials help minimize construction outlay by reducing labour and transportation costs and lesser expense on foundation construction. The variability in the experimental data and the brick properties were investigated for two types of soils, typical in the brick industry of India (alluvial and laterite soil), blended with PMSC in five mix ratios (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%). The samples of oven-dried bricks were fired at two different temperatures (850 and 900 °C) in an electrically operated muffle furnace representing typical conditions of a brick kiln. Various properties of bricks were analyzed which included linear shrinkage, bulk density, water absorption and compressive strength. Conclusions were drawn based on these properties. It was found that the addition of PMSC to the alluvial and laterite soil by up to 10% weight yield mechanical properties of fired bricks compliant with the relevant Indian and ASTM codes. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests showed that PMSC incorporated fired bricks are safe to use in regular applications as non-load-bearing and infill walls. Abstract: This paper presents results of an investigation into the potential use of recycling paper mill waste-water to replace mixing water in cement mortar systems for manufacturing concrete masonry products. The physical and mechanical properties of mortar containing various amounts of de-inking waste-water were consequently investigated. A key finding of this study was that replacing mortar mixing water with waste-water significantly improved workability and consistency of cement mortar mixtures. In particular the flow of mortar mixtures increased with increase of waste-water content up to 50% and then levelled off when waste-water content exceeded 50%. Correspondingly, the flow of mortar mix with 100% waste-water replacement at water/cement ratio of 0.50 was found to be equivalent to that of the reference mortar mix with 100% potable water at water/cement ratio of 0.60, indicating potential use of de-inking waste-water as water reducing admixture. The enhanced workability arising from waste-water addition however induced changes in mechanical properties of the hardened material. Compared to reference mortar, replacing 10% and 100% potable water respectively resulted in 19% and 60% reduction of compressive strength, with a corresponding 5% and 16% drop in bulk density, and up to 19% increase in drying shrinkage. Also, water absorption and volume of permeable voids increased with increasing waste-water dosage, albeit marginally. The benefits derived from rheology improvements compared to compromises in mechanical properties due to de-inking waste-water addition strongly indicate clear potential of using de-inking waste-water in production of lightweight cementitious building and masonry elements. Abstract: The texture of the C–S–H gels formed in ternary cement blends containing thermally activated paper sludge (APS), fly ash (FA) from coal combustion and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) was studied by means of the specific surface area (SSA) and pore-size distribution (PSD), which were measured by the sorption isotherms of nitrogen gas and the BET method. Two differentiated zones in the PSD of the C–S–H gel at ∼10–20nm and ∼5nm were observed. The proportion of such zones depends on the age of hydration and amount of OPC replacement. The incorporation of the additions (APS and FA) clearly revealed an increase in both porosity and SSA. This effect decreased with the progress of hydration together with a refinement of the nano-porous structure of C–S–H. High correlations were found among these nanostructure characteristics of the C–S–H gel and mechanical strengths. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The paper analyses the effect of waste sludge from paper industry (paper sludge) on physical and mechanical properties of clay bricks, their microstructure and resistance to freezing and thawing. Paper sludge is not hazardous industrial waste mainly consisting of cellulose and calcite. Clay bodies were made from the mix containing from 5% to 20% of paper sludge and fired at 900 °C and 1000 °C temperatures. Open pore structure in the clay body is developed as a result of burnt cellulose fibres and calcite decarbonization. Physical and mechanical properties of clay bodies change depending on the content of added PS: shrinkage, density and compressive strength reduce, water absorption and effective porosity increase. It is recommended to add 5% of paper sludge to the clay body and fire it at 900 °C temperature, or alternatively add 5–15% of paper sludge and fire the clay body at 1000 °C temperature. In terms of resistance to freezing and thawing, such products are regarded as frost resistant in moderately aggressive environment, i.e. in structures protected from direct environmental effects. Their effects on viscosity modification, hydration kinetics, autogenous shrinkage, and compressive strength of cement grouts were measured, and their structural integrity at high pH was assessed. A new parameter was proposed to quantify nonlinearity induced by VMAs. Results showed that the hierarchical structure of paper pulp makes it possible to activate bridging flocculation and swelling mechanisms of hydrophile paper pulp fibers at different levels to produce versatile VMAs. The coarser milled paper pulp fibers mainly influences the plastic viscosity. By contrast, the milled paper pulp consisting of ultra-fine fibers significantly modifies both plastic viscosity and dynamic yield stress, induces more nonlinearity in the mixtures, and increases compressive strength of mortars at low dosages. Flexural tensile strength and compressive strength measured were used to verify, through a numerical simulation, the flexural stress of a 0.7 × 0.8 × 0.1 m pervious concrete plate. Porosity, permeability coefficients of the plates, as well as their thermal conductivity were determined. As a result, compressive strength was reduced, flexural tensile strength was not influenced. Mixtures presented high degrees of permeability (over 3600 mm/h), and potentially reduce CO 2 emissions in cement production, for the proposed use. The pervious concrete with 5% of WPI showed the lowest thermal conductivity (0.798 W/mk), inferior to the thermal conductivity of conventional impervious concrete (1.518 W/mk). The usage of solid waste material in pavement construction could substantially reduce the waste production and reduces the possibility of those waste materials ending up on landfills. This paper evaluates the microscopic analysis such as XRD, XRF and the mechanical properties of asphalt mixture with the incorporation of Recycled Paper Mill Sludge (RPMS). Mechanical properties that were evaluated were indirect tensile strength (ITS), moisture sensitivity, resilient modulus, Leutner shear and dynamic creep. RPMS was added to the asphalt mixture through dry process at the rate of 0.5% and 1%. Addition of RPMS at specific rate improved the mechanical properties such as resilient modulus, Leutner shear and dynamic creep of asphalt mixture. The lapped antenna like fibre of RPMS improved the resilient modulus of asphalt mixture by acting as a reinforcing material. This review compiles the main scientific and technical findings on the viability of using paper sludge waste as a supplementary cementitious material in the manufacture of future eco-efficient cements. It contains a detailed analysis of the scientific (characterisation, activation conditions, pozzolanic activity, system reaction kinetics) and technical (rheology, physical and mechanical properties, and resistance to chlorides, sulphates, sea spray and CO 2 ) properties of this type of waste when used as a supplementary cementitious material. The following parameters were examined for the bricks produced at 1000 °C and 1100 °C; water absorption, apparent porosity, efflorescence, bulk density, compressive strength and thermal conductivity. For the fired brick production, CS was used up to 30% while PMS up to 15%. The compressive strength of the fired bricks having 15% CS and 5% PMS content were in accordance with the standards. The thermal conductivity ranged from 0.742 W/mK to 0.155 W/mK. Also, the influences of waste concentrations on the quadratic model were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The analysis results indicate that the firing temperature is the least important parameter affecting all properties of brick. Soil-based building material has been used since ancient times but lately it has been mainly considered for restoration purposes of traditional architecture instead of an eco-friendly construction material for new buildings. However, the promotion of a more sustainable architecture has recently led to look towards adobe or rammed earth, among others. Because of the high impact of concrete and the fired clay brick industry, mainly due to the use of clinker and the firing process, respectively, adobe may highly reduce the ecological footprint of conventional construction and building materials. In addition, the use of fibers for adobe reinforcement has been also highlighted as a key factor for improving adobe performance. Obviously, when residues successfully replace such fibers the ecological footprint may be reduced even more. Thus, this research focuses on the assessment of adobe reinforced with paper and pulp industry residues (PPR) with the aim of demonstrating the feasibility of this construction material. The experimental results indicate that single addition of 30% PSA or 20% ARPS can improve the flexural strength of CSBM effectively because a moderate addition of paper sludge can decrease the porosity. Meanwhile, the addition of PSA or ARPS notably reduces the thermal conductivity of the CSBM and DSC-TG analysis present a better thermal stability before 650 °C. In the aim of the valorisation of waste paper, an experimental study of a new biocomposite (AWPL) dedicated to building based on Aggregates of Waste Paper and Lime is performed. The waste paper used in this work is transformed to Aggregates of Waste Paper (AWP), the physical, thermal and morphological properties were carried out. Five combinations of (AWP – Lime) have been prepared and the weight ratios of lime used are 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 wt% correspond. Experimental investigations of physical, mechanical, thermal and morphological characterizations of AWPL were carried out in order to determine: the apparent density, the open porosity, the water absorption, the ultrasound pulse velocity, the flexural and compressive strengths and the thermal conductivity. Furthermore, a characterization by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was realized to observe the AWP/lime bond. The results of characterization of AWPL show good mechanical properties as flexural and as compressive, these results are confirmed by the analysis SEM, that shown good adhesion of the AWP/Lime interface. The thermal characterization tests of AWPL have shown an important thermal insulation capacity linked to the low values of the thermal conductivity, these low values can be explained by the high porosity of AWPL. This study is the first step of a research program organized to contribute to the dream of using recycled paper as a structural element for sustainable design in Civil Engineering. One of the important tasks is to understand the behavior of connections in paper materials. This study presents the results of experimental research carried out to investigate the behavior of paperboard laminate connections consisting of a single bolt in double shear. A simple and effective method to predict the bearing strength in bolted connection for paperboard laminates has been proposed. A total of 96 bolted connections were fabricated from paperboards oriented in both machine and cross direction. The effect of end distance and edge distance of bolt hole are investigated to address the limiting value for both variables. It was found that the failure is governed by both shear and bearing stresses developed around the hole. Abstract: The use of paper-mill residuals in concrete formulations was investigated as an alternative to landfill disposal. The mechanical and durability properties of concrete containing paper-mill residuals collected from a wastewater treatment-plant were evaluated. Class F fly ash was used as a replacement for Portland cement (PC) when incorporated into concrete mixtures containing paper-mill residuals and the resulting products were compared to normal concrete. Compressive, splitting tensile, flexural strength and drying shrinkage tests were carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties for up to 90days. Rapid chloride-permeability tests and initial surface-absorption tests were carried out at 28days to determine the durability properties. Waste papers, hazelnut shells, pinecones and sheep wool were used at the production stage. The filling rates of the materials were optimized using the RSM. A hydrophobic surface-active substance was used to reduce water absorbability, microbial activity and mold formation. It was observed that these specimens' contact angles were 84° to 146°, thermal conductivity were 0.0511 to 0.0861 W/mK and densities were 0.678 to 0.99 g/cm3. As a result of the compressive and flexural strength tests, it was found that the compressive strength of the specimens was very high, the highest compressive strength was found as 32.8093 N/mm2 in the specimen N25, and the highest flexure strength was found as 6.352 N/mm2 in the specimen N20. The deinking paper sludge (DPS) generated by paper recycling incorporated in ceramic pastes has received significant attention to develop environmentally-friendly construction materials with a good thermal and sound insulation characteristic while maintaining a resistance mechanical acceptable by standards. The environmental risks associated with the incorporation of these sludge into clay bricks that rich in heavy metals such as Cr, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, etc. have been evaluated. The evaluation of these metals was carried out by performing the leaching test in order to be able to introduce this new material in the list of materials to be marketed in the field of civil engineering. Leaching tests were performed on clay, DPS and the finished product as fired bricks. Leaching results on clays show that they are non-hazardous products, while heavy metal leaching of DPS is above the limiting concentrations, which classifies DPS as a hazardous waste. In contrast, the leaching concentrations of the bricks incorporated by DPS, show that the heavy metals were immobilized in the ceramic structures of all the fired bricks. In this study, the percentages of DPS added in the composition of the bricks are 8%, 10% and 12%. Results of leaching test suggest that replacing up to 12% of clays with DPS can provide bricks to reduce the environmental impact of abundant waste and preserve non-renewable natural resources. A raw decorative paper was coated with a mixture of TiO 2 -SiO 2 nanocomposite aerogel and melamine-formaldehyde resin to achieve dual functions, namely formaldehyde degradation and smoke suppression. The physical and chemical structure of TiO 2 -SiO 2 nanocomposite aerogel and its photocatalytic activity on liquid formaldehyde degradation were revealed. Moreover, the coated melamine-impregnated paper was further decorated into the surface of a poplar wood veneer to prepare a real indoor panel. A self-designed sealed box and cone calorimeter were used to test its photocatalytic activity on gaseous formaldehyde degradation and smoke suppression. The results showed that the presence of massive mesopores in TiO 2 -SiO 2 nanocomposite aerogel and the appearance of anatase nanocrystal of TiO 2 synergistically lead to both the high liquid and gaseous formaldehyde degradation rates of 65.8% and 56.6%. In addition, the porous structure and incombustibility of TiO 2 -SiO 2 nanocomposite aerogel also result in high smoke suppression, demonstrating the maximum decrease in CO and CO 2 production by 56.2% and 33.2%. The preparation process of the coated melamine-impregnated paper is easy to realize industrial production. A sandwich structure consisting of perlite composite foam as core and Brown paper as skin is developed and its flexural behaviour is studied in relation with properties of constituents and manufacturing variables of perlite composite foam core consolidated with sodium silicate binder by compaction. Tensile properties of Brown paper coated with binder were affected by sodium silicate content in diluted binder. The best performance of the Brown paper was found for strength and energy absorption when coated with undiluted binder. The sandwich structure was fabricated with the best performed Brown paper and perlite composite foam cores with various binder contents and compaction ratios. The performance of the sandwich structure for core shear strength, skin normal strength, and stiffness was similarly affected by manufacturing variables to those of perlite foam core. Load carrying capacity of perlite foam core reinforced with Brown paper for the sandwich structure was increased about 3–7 times the unreinforced one depending on how binder and compaction ratio are combined for manufacturing perlite foam core. The flexural failure of perlite composite foam core was initiated from the tension side of the flexural specimen. Investigation of formaldehyde and VOCs emissions from wood-based panels are of great importance because of their negative impact on human health. In this study, a novel low formaldehyde and VOCs emitting board coated with nanomaterial-added melamine-impregnated papers was developed. Melamine resins which were reinforced with nanomaterials were used to impregnate decor papers. The effect of nanomaterial type (nano TiO2, nano MMT) and loading levels (0.5%, 1%) on formaldehyde and VOCs emissions from wood-based panels with melamine-impregnated papers were investigated. Formaldehyde and VOCs measurement were conducted according to GB 17657-1999 and JIS A1901-2009. Numerical results showed that formaldehyde and VOCs emissions from coating boards were significantly affected by nanomaterials. Compared with control panels, formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels coated with 0.5% nanoparticles reinforced melamine-impregnated papers decreased slightly. With the increasing of loading level, the emissions decreased to a fairly low value, which were 22.2-36.6% lower than that of control panels. Most emitted VOCs were aromatics and alkane, which were main natural compounds detected in particleboard emissions. Most of the identified VOCs emissions decreased due to the existence of nanomaterial. With the increasing of nanomaterial loading level to 1%, total VOC emissions decreased 22.6-25.6% of control panels. Paper sludge ash-based stabilizers (PSASs) have recently been developed in Japan as sustainable construction materials for soil stabilization. PSASs are produced by the in-solubilization of heavy metals in paper sludge (PS), which is generated as a by-product of the de-inking and re-pulping of paper. PSASs can improve the stability of high-water-content clays immediately after mixing owing to their good water absorption and retention performance. However, mixture design methods that consider time variations of the water absorption and retention performance of a PSAS are lacking. Therefore, in this study, the effects of a PSAS on the physical and mechanical properties of the treated clay were experimentally investigated, considering the change in the water absorption and retention performance of the PSAS with curing time. The water absorption and retention rate, W ab , of the PSAS, is defined as the ratio of the mass of water absorbed and retained by the PSAS to its dry mass. Physical tests and cone index tests were conducted on different types of clays treated with different types of PSASs. The test results showed that different W ab values were obtained depending on the type of the PSAS and that the W ab value increased with curing time. From the experiments, it was found that the liquid limits, w L , and plastic limits, w P , of the PSAS-treated clays with different curing times could be evaluated from the W ab values of the PSAS and the particle sizes of the PSAS and untreated clays. A clear correlation was also found between the cone index, q c , and liquidity index, I L , of the treated and untreated clays. Based on the results, a new approach for mixture design was proposed. The applicability of the proposed method was investigated, and the results showed that the measured q c value of the PSAS-treated clay was close to the target q c value. Abstract: This study was to develop a new building material, Wood-Crete, using sawdust, waste paper and Tradical lime. The paper presents the processing technologies, factors which affect the performance of the developed composites, and properties of Wood-Crete. The results showed that lightweight sustainable blocks can be produced with good insulating and other relevant properties for building construction with density ranging from 356 to 713kg/m3 and compressive strength from 0.06 to 0.80MPa. The properties were closely related to the composition of Wood-Crete with an addition of waste paper being a dominant influence on both strength and thermal conductivity, reflecting its effect on the structure of composite and contribution of self strength of paper fibres. The combined effect of sawdust and waste paper and Tradical lime had a direct effect on the strength properties of Wood-Crete. Of significant importance was the contribution of self strength of Wood-Crete due to the influence of the size of sawdust particles used. The developed Wood-Crete was able to withstand considerable amount of impact load and considered, like hempcrete, most suitable for wall panelling or other non- and semi-structural applications with good thermal insulating properties. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of using a paper sludge ash-based stabilizer (PSAS) to improve the properties of sand proposed to be used as a backfill material around underground pipes. The swelling potential and strength of the sand treated with PSAS are investigated by conducting a series of laboratory tests. Similar tests are conducted on sand treated with ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Swelling potential tests show that the PSAS-treated sand with a water content of 0% show significant expansion during soaking, similar to the OPC-treated sand. However, the test results reveal that an appropriate moisture content of the PSAS-treated sand reduces its potential for expansion, depending on the duration of its temporary placement at the construction site. Unconfined compression tests show that the compressive strength of the PSAS-treated sand is significantly lower than that of the OPC-treated sand under the same mixing conditions, even though the chemical composition of PSAS is relatively similar to that of OPC. The increase in compressive strength with the curing time is more gradual in the PSAS-treated sand than in the OPC-treated sand, suggesting that the former is easier to re-excavate. X-ray diffraction profiles showed that the formation of calcite is dominant in the PSAS-treated sand, and that berlinite may be an additional contributor to the increase in strength of PSAS-treated sand in the long term. Abstract: This work deals with the frost resistance of blended cements containing calcined paper sludge (source for metakaolin) as partial Portland cement replacements. Freeze–thaw tests were performed on blended cement mortars containing 0%, 10% and 20% waste paper sludge calcined at 650°C for 2h. Cement mortar specimens were exposed to freezing and thawing cycles until the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity fell below 60%. The performance of the cement mortars was assessed from measurements of weight, ultrasonic pulse velocity, compressive strength, mercury intrusion porosimetry and SEM. Failure of the control cement mortar occurred before 40 freeze/thaw cycles, while cement mortar containing 20% calcined paper sludge failed after 100 cycles. After 28 and 62 freezing and thawing cycles, cement blended with 10% and 20% calcined paper sludge exhibited a smaller reduction in compressive strength than the control cement. • The advantages of degradable resins in the recycling process of CFCs are highlighted. • The application of WCFs in cement-based materials, lithium-ion battery materials, and other functional fields is analyzed. • The possible problems of carbon fiber recycling methods are added, and future directions for improvement are proposed. Carbon fiber composites (CFCs) are widely used in modern industry with their excellent properties. However, a large amount of CFCs waste has been produced because of the limitations of the processing technology and service life. And in the next 20 years, the amount of waste will increase dramatically, resulting in environmental pollution and waste of resources. How to efficiently recycle and reuse CFCs is a common problem faced by mankind. Facing the shortages of traditional recycling technology, this paper focuses on the recycling of CFCs by various new degradable resins, including degradation conditions, degradation mechanism and degradation effect. Meanwhile, the application of waste carbon fibers (WCFs) in cement-based materials (Mechanical and electrical conductivity, etc.), lithium-ion battery materials, thermoelectric materials, and other functional fields (Fillers, electromagnetic shielding, and parts manufacturing, etc.) are described in detail. The recycling of WCFs is imperative, but the traditional resin is not easily degradable, which is the biggest obstacle to the recycling of WCFs. Degradable resin-based CFCs has huge application prospects in the future. With appropriate recycling techniques, the strength of WCFs will be lost by 5 % to 50 %, but it still meets the requirements for use in construction materials and some industrial fields. Abstract: Making use of industrial by-product or waste clay to partially replace cement in concrete has greatly contributed to sustainable development of environment. This study investigated the optimal activation condition for producing high reactivity metakaolin (MK) by using kaolin by-products (KB) from paper industry. Initially, the material properties of KB were analyzed in this study and the results indicated its great potential to be treated by calcination to be a very effective pozzolan. Afterwards, MK samples produced from different activation treatments of KB, including different calcining temperature, calcining duration, initial temperature rise rime and grinding particle size, were applied in mortar to determine their pozzolanic effect. Results indicated that the optimal activation condition for KB to high reactivity MK conversion is 2-h calcining duration at 750°C and with 7μm grinding particle size. Finally, compressive and flexural strengths of mortar samples produced by replacing cement with 0–25% MK content were tested and the results showed that 15% was the optimal cement replacement level of MK and the mortar so produced exhibited 20% improvement in compressive strength compared to control mortar. The use of recycled paper in HDPE (High Density PolyEthylene) matrix composites has recently been introduced as an interesting alternative to traditional recycling process for paper. HDPE is also used as double wall greenhouse glazing because panels are easy to install, UV stabilized, and affordable. These type of products must also be strong enough and durable in order to react under tensile loads provided by wind and harsh weather conditions. An interesting idea may be the insertion via injection moulding of chopped basalt and waste paper – i.e. , two natural products – in pure HDPE samples. It completely follows the environmental sustainability concept centred on the triple “ re ”, i.e. , re cycle, re use and re duce. The research presented herein starts with a Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) inspection of pure HDPE and HDPE mixed with 5% by weight of waste paper plus 5% by weight of chopped basalt as fillers in order to obtain an insight related to the temperature at which possible thermal events (endothermic or exothermic) occur. The dog-bone samples were also inspected under UV conditions (380 nm) before and after tensile tests. The latter approach was simulated firstly by Comsol Multiphysics® computer program, and secondly recorded in real time via thermographic inspections. The temperature variation in a region of interest (ROI) selected at the centre of the samples was mapped in the time during the inspection by infrared thermography (IRT) method using a pseudo-static matrix reconstruction algorithm realized in Matlab® environment. Instead, the combined use of thermocouples aimed at emphasizing the knowledge of the heat transfer in the time due to the mechanical stress applied at the borders of the inspected samples. The aim was to understand whether modified HDPE can (or cannot) be a valid competitor of pure HDPE for the production of semi-transparent and robust panels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The use of paper de-inking sludge in pozzolanic material manufacture permits a disposable residue to be included in the cycle of the materials. A study on the reuse of paper de-inking sludge, undertaken in Spain, shows its potential as raw material for yielding a product with pozzolanic activity. This study establishes that an optimal condition for transforming paper de-inking sludge into a pozzolanic addition is achieved at 700°C maintained for 2h. Under these conditions, the organic matter disappears and the calcined sludge becomes active by transforming kaolinite into metakaolinite. The calcined product exhibits high pozzolanic activity. The present paper also analyses mechanical, physical and chemical properties of a blended cement containing 90% (in mass) standard Portland cement (CEM I-52,5N) and 10% of the pozzolanic addition obtained from controlled calcination of paper de-inking sludge (for 2h at 700°C). When the blended cement is compared with a cement containing 100% standard Portland cement, the following conclusions can be mentioned: a significant gain in compressive strength from 7 days on, a sooner initial setting time, as well as a reduction in SO3 percentage.
