The article offers insights on undertaking library assessment in small- and medium-sized colleges and universities. It describes the techniques used by the authors to conduct small-scale assessment at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. Among the small-scale approaches used by the authors is to look at interlibrary loan fill-rate and to ask faculty for bibliographies of papers or presentations. Library assessment at Providence has also benefited from the overall assessment work that the college undertakes. The college administers the Student Satisfaction Inventory, which includes to library-related questions, to freshmen and seniors. The results provide the library a look at how its primarily clientele generally perceives it. The library was able to gather additional assessment data in 2003 when it received institutional support to participate in LibQual+, a nationally normed survey which measures four areas of library operation. Results from this survey prompted the college to begin a long-term renovation project in the summer of 2003.

Libraries play an important role in the education of college students engaged in the online environment of a course management software package. The courseware enables faculty to teach fully online courses or use to enhance their traditional courses with online content. The role of librarians is magnified in the project initiated by the Eastern Kentucky University Libraries. An awarded grant provided an opportunity for librarians to focus more on collaborative relationships with teaching faculty members to better suit the information needs of students. The faculty chose Blackboard as the courseware for further collaboration with individual faculty members, academic departments, and specialized centers such as the Teaching and Learning Center. Integrating library resources into Blackboard courses has resulted in positive benefits for students, faculty and librarians.

This article focuses on the collaborative program launched by the University of Iowa Library's and the university's School of Library and Information Science, in February 2001, which gave a small number of graduate students a student teaching-like experience in the area of instructional services while earning a salary as graduate assistants. The graduate students learn to prepare and present classes and they work on projects, such as handout and Web page development. The library science graduate assistants benefit from this program in numerous ways. First they receive experience in curriculum development, second they gain experience in classroom teaching, and finally they have the opportunity to interact on a professional level with practicing librarians and they become an important part of the Instructional Services Department.

Michael Kaskowitz, a new marketing professor designed a class project in which students would develop a marketing plan for the library café. The article reports that the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), a library consortium of Duke University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, has released a study on the amount of "overlap" in their collections. According to the article, seventy-one percent of TRLN's holdings are held at just one TRLN academic library. The article reports that the amount of "collection overlap" was the highest for subjects that all campuses had research programs in. The study was conducted with the assistance of OCLC's WorldCat Collection Analysis Service. The survey analyzed monographs only and did not cover overlaps in electronic and print serial publications.

Christina Peterson, the academic services librarian, initiated the work to fully understand the differing objectives and clientele of the public and the academic libraries. In terms of reference service, there is the continuum between completely answering the question and teaching users to become independent researchers.

This article focuses on the establishment of an Undergraduate Market Council (UMC) at the main library of Emory University in 2001. This is charged to describe and explore the embedded college library, from the perspective of both the library and the user community, with the aim of enhancing the undergraduate experience of the research library. Market councils are an innovative feature of the library's organizational structure and have brought user focus to the library's internal and external communication. Through the UMC, the library has put on a human face for one of the most important user groups.

This article relates how librarians in Connecticut College relied on original thinking for preserving the library collection from deterioration and loss. As the Connecticut College budget and planning committee was deciding priorities for the coming fiscal year funding, the author asserted their request for collection maintenance funds based on asset reinvestment arguments. During the meeting of the New England chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries, the college president Norman Fainstein challenged the existing order of things in the academic library, especially the replacement of damaged and lost books with limited funds in a time where students and faculty rely on the Internet and digital materials. The librarians are reminded of the role of libraries in the transmission of culture. Also, the number of students using the library is increasing despite new-age information technology.

Brian Mikesell of St. John's University discussed about how the Masters of Library and Information (MLS) degree provides a foundation for the profession. He listed several ways to grow in the profession, including finding a mentor speaking up about ideas and opinions and serving on professional committees.

The University of Alabama's University Libraries, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison's General Library System, has received an IMLS grant to digitize publishers' book bindings and develop a thesaurus and glossary of trade binding terminology. The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill has received a gift of nearly one million dollars from the estate of Gladys Hall to establish the Albert and Gladys Coates Endowment Fund to benefit the Wilson Library's North Carolina Collection. The George V. Higgins Archive has been established at the University of South Carolina's Thomas Cooper Library to house the personal, literary and legal papers of the Boston author whose career included work as a journalist, federal prosecutor, district attorney, novelist, critic, historian, and professor of creative writing at the Boston University. A 17th century Chinese hand scroll has been donated to the Columbia University's C.V. Starr East Asian Library by professor Yosef Yerushalmi.

This article reports on developments pertaining to the activities of the University Libraries Section, as of April 2004. The ULS Section executive committee is addressing several important issues as we members grapple with changing economic times and reduced travel budgets. The section is anxious to assess the current two-conference attendance requirement for the committee involvement of the American Libraries Association. The University Libraries Section executive committee, chaired by Gillian McCombs, met twice during the Midwinter Meeting. Discussions centered on the Association of College and Research Libraries dialogue session on strategic planning and the possibility of producing the section newsletter in print, as well as electronic format, to reach more members.
