A study was made of the hydrolytic polycondensation and exchange reaction of methyltrichlorosilane with sodium metasilicate and it was shown that when the reaction proceeds in alkaline medium (pH> 7) the pH of the reaction medium, and not the functionality of the system, exerts the predominant effect on gel formation, but when the reaction is run in acid medium (pH 2) a direct relation is observed between the yield of insoluble products and the functionality of the system.

1. A study was made of the reaction of diphenyldichlorosilane and of triphenylchlorosilane with methyltrichlorosilane in the presence of either LiAlH4 or a mixture of LiH and AlCl3. At 250° the degree of conversion reaches 60–90% in 1–4 h and a complex mixture of products is formed, which contains a large amount of mixed methylphenylchlorosilanes. 2. Triphenylchlorosilane under the investigated conditions always reacts with a replacement of the phenyl group, while methyltrichlorosilane reacts with a replacement of the chlorine atom. The phenyl group is also mainly replaced in the case of diphenyldichlorosilane, but it is also possible to have replacement of the chlorine atom, which evidently proceeds to only a slight degree in this case.

1. The interaction of trichlorosilane, methyltrichlorosilane and vinyltrichlorosilane with the mixed alcoholate of dimethylethynyl carbinol-magnesium bromide was investigated. The reactions yielded three representatives of a new class of organosilicon compounds - trihydric tertiaryγ-silicon-containing alcohols of the acetylenic series. 2. A method of preparation of trihydric tertiaryγ-silicon-containing acetylenic alcohols was developed on the basis of the reaction of alkyltrichlorosilanes with dimethylethynyl carbinol-magnesium bromide.

A study of the hydrolytic polycondensation of methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) in the presence of a hydrogen chloride acceptor, using various solvents as the medium, disclosed that in a solvent medium in which water is readily soluble the process proceeds with the formation of soluble polycyclic compounds and is independent of the methyltrichlorosilane concentration. 2. The formation of soluble hydrolytic polycondensation products of MTCS is due to the faster rate of the intramolecular condensation reaction, which leads to a termination of the growing chain.

The reaction of methylhydrochlorosilanes with the menthyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid gave seven new optically active menthyl esters of chlorosilylpropionic and chlorosilylisobutyric acid. The mono- and dimenthoxychloromethylsilanes were isolated when methyltrichlorosilane was etherified withl-menthol. 2. All of the obtained compounds have a negative rotation and give smooth negative rotation dispersion curves, which are satisfactorily described by the Drude equation in the wavelength range 302–612 mμ.

A new reaction of trichlorosilane with saturated hydrocarbons has been found which takes place at about 600° in a circulating system and results in the formation of organic compounds of silicon of the type RSiCl3 with a yield of more than 60%. 2. Regardless of the nature of the hydrocarbon, methyltrichlorosilane and vinyltrichlorosilane are always found among the silico-organic compounds that are formed; their yield is as much as about 30% in some cases.

1. The synthesis of methyltrichlorosilane by the reaction of silicon with methyl chloride proceeds through stable surface compounds-products of the partial chlorination of silicon (SiCln). 2. Preliminary chlorination of silicon, which leads to the formation of surface compounds (SiCln) as active reaction centers, accelerates the reaction with methyl chloride with the formation of methyltrichlorosilane.

1. The possibility of gas-phase chlorination of alkylsilanes in a barrier discharge was shown for the first time. 2. The composition of products of direct and destructive chlorination of methylchloro-silane was ascertained.

1. The reaction of α-methyltetrahydropyran with silicon tetrachloride, methyltrichlorosilane and titanium tetrachloride was studied. 2. In all cases the tetrahydropyran ring broke at both C-O bonds, but principally at the C-O bond adjacent to the methyl radical.
