The uncertainty about the relationships between the star catalogue contained in the Almagest (books VII-VIII) and the catalogue of Hipparchus dates back to the origins of modern astronomy. The fact that Hipparchus' catalogue was lost and that his observations of a limited number of stars remained has favored the formulation of various hypotheses on the subject. The recent discovery of (at least) a part of Hipparchus' catalogue seems to indicate that there are various concordances between the two catalogues, but also differences sufficient to suggest that Ptolemy's catalogue also derives from sources independent of Hipparchus' catalogue. The formal representation of cultural metadata has always been a challenge, considering both the heterogeneity of cultural objects and the need to document the interpretive act exercised by experts. This article provides an overview of the revalorization of the digital collection Mythologiae in Linked Open Data format. The research aims to explore the data of a collection of artworks (Mythologiae) by promoting the potential of the Semantic Web, focusing particularly on the formal representation of the association of cultural objects with literary sources, as realized by experts, also documenting their interpretations. The workflow consisted of defining the data model, cleaning and disambiguating the data, converting it (from tabular structure to graph), and conducting testing activities (particularly expert domain review of the dataset through competency questions and data visualizations). The result is the mythLOD platform, which presents the dataset and detailed research documentation. Additionally, the platform hosts two data visualization spaces (the online catalogue and a data storytelling experiment on the case study of the Aeneid) that enrich the project documentation as user-friendly test units for the dataset and constitute an additional project documentation tool and exploration of the collection., Comment: in Italian language

Seventy-five years ago, Bernardo Dessau passed away. He had been the sole professor of Physics at the University of Perugia for thirty years. With this brief contribution we intend to repay a debt of gratitude, first of all because his scientific merits were probably underestimated, having spent the first fifteen years of his career under the shadow of the great Augusto Righi in Bologna, where he also witnessed meetings with the young Marconi. He was then relegated to the Faculty of Medicine of Perugia, without a real laboratory, disregarded by the national scientific community and unable to move to better equipped locations. Nevertheless, he proved to be a gifted teacher and popularizer of science. He published a comprehensive three-volume physics textbook that was widely used in Italy and abroad. Despite becoming an Italian citizen in 1894, Dessau's German origins led to his suspension from service during World War I. Furthermore, his Jewish identity made him a target of Nazi-fascist antisemitism. With the appearance of SARS-CoV-2, two epidemics have spread: one for health and one for information. The virus has generated an unprecedented infodemic, contributing to the establishment of a climate of great uncertainty. Massive and redundant information has also been an effective vector of propaganda, on a global scale, by state and non-state actors. A real hostile act in which physical violence is not foreseen, but systematic management of information through the manipulation of the cognitive sphere. The main component of the NextGeneration EU (NGEU) program is the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), spanning an implementation period between 2021 and 2026. The RRF also includes a monitoring system: every six months, each country is required to send an update on the progress of the plan against 14 common indicators, measured on specific quantitative scales. The aim of this paper is to present the first empirical evidence on this system, while, at the same time, emphasizing the potential of its integration with the sustainable development framework (SDGs). We propose to develop a first linkage between the 14 common indicators and the SDGs which allows us to produce a composite index (SDGs-RRF) for France, Germany, Italy, and Spain for the period 2014-2021. Over this time, widespread improvements in the composite index across the four countries led to a partial reduction of the divergence. The goal of this study is to investigate whether a Transformer-based neural language model infers lexical semantics and use this information for the completion of morphosyntactic patterns. The semantic properties considered are telicity (also combined with definiteness) and agentivity. The tasks were submitted to both the computational model and a group of Italian native speakers. Personality is considered one of the most influential research topics in psychology, as it predicts many consequential outcomes such as mental and physical health and explains human behaviour. With the widespread use of social networks as a means of communication, it is becoming increasingly important to develop models that can automatically and accurately read the essence of individuals based solely on their writing. In particular, the convergence of social and computer sciences has led researchers to develop automatic approaches for extracting and studying "hidden" information in textual data on the internet. The nature of this thesis project is highly experimental, and the motivation behind this work is to present detailed analyses on the topic, as currently there are no significant investigations of this kind. The objective is to identify an adequate semantic space that allows for defining the personality of the object to which a certain text refers. The starting point is a dictionary of adjectives that psychological literature defines as markers of the five major personality traits, or Big Five. In this work, we started with the implementation of fully-connected neural networks as a basis for understanding how simple deep learning models can provide information on hidden personality characteristics. Finally, we use a class of distributional algorithms invented in 2013 by Tomas Mikolov, which consists of using a convolutional neural network that learns the contexts of words in an unsupervised way. In this way, we construct an embedding that contains the semantic information on the text, obtaining a kind of "geometry of meaning" in which concepts are translated into linear relationships. This paper presents an overview of the state of scientific research in physics in the Italian peninsula for the first thirty years of XIX century. Physics Education Research has shown that the active methodologies are better than traditional methodologies, the most popular are PODS and PI. However, there are three problems that blur their effectiveness: first, the pre and post-test do not allow to know what happens in the learning process; second, the answers that average - performance students give to questions of a test are influenced by the answers of the more advanced students; third, in many types of research on PI the students do not experiment. In the present work, it is exposed a research on the learning through PI with $42$ students over a small physical concept (Bodies falling in air), the interaction between the students was designed to correct the aforementioned problems. The collaboration of mathematics in the two musical systems of Pythagorean sounds and of equal sounds is evident and opportune for generating the elements and managing their relationships. The only essential notion for a rational intervention in the two sound worlds is that of distance between sounds. The scale of natural sounds does not seem to dialogue directly with a purely mathematical module that articulates its definition and is generally presented as a manual adjustment of the ancient Pythagorean sounds. The model of proportions that formed and inspired the architecture of the sixteenth century, an era in which the natural scale emerges, provides a clear idea for systematically adjusting natural sounds; on the other hand, the generation of sounds based and started exclusively on the respect of the proportions proposes interesting natural sound systems. In this paper we make some considerations about using a dynamic geometry software for teaching history of mathematica at university level. After a short introduction to the software GeoGebra, we discuss four activities. The first is an exploration of the menu of the tools menu following the first part of the first book of the elements of Euclid. The second is an activity about pentagons and pentagrams which aims at finding a more natural way of discovering their properties than that suggested by Euclid as an illustration of the method of synthesis and analysis. The third is an activity on circle inversion and its connection with polarity and the construction of the fourth harmonic point after three given point on a line. The activity continues with the reading of Poncelet's ideas about ideal secants of conics and how to use GeoGebra to make sense of them. The fourth activity shows how to use the possibility to move objects in GeoGebra to make sense of the geometric intuition behind Cremona and Hirst letters about the Bellavitis-Hirst inversion of a circle. The question of whether Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization data from Planck favor a spatially closed Universe with curvature parameter $\Omega_K<0$ has been the subject of recent intense discussions. Attempts to break the geometrical degeneracy combining Planck data with external datasets such as Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements all point towards a spatially flat Universe, at the cost of significant tensions with Planck, which make the resulting dataset combination problematic. Settling this issue requires identifying a dataset which can break the geometrical degeneracy while not incurring in these tensions. We argue that cosmic chronometers (CC), measurements of the expansion rate $H(z)$ from the relative ages of massive early-type passively evolving galaxies, are the dataset we are after. Furthermore, CC come with the additional advantage of being virtually free of cosmological model assumptions. Combining Planck 2018 CMB temperature and polarization data with the latest CC measurements, we break the geometrical degeneracy and find $\Omega_K=-0.0054 \pm 0.0055$, consistent with a spatially flat Universe and competitive with the Planck+BAO constraint. Our results are stable against minimal parameter space extensions and CC systematics, and we find no substantial tension between Planck and CC data within a non-flat Universe, making the resulting combination reliable. Our results allow us to assert with confidence that the Universe is spatially flat to the ${\cal O}(10^{-2})$ level, a finding which might possibly settle the ongoing spatial curvature debate, and lends even more support to the already very successful inflationary paradigm., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures. The impact of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms in the age of big data and platform capitalism has not spared scientific research in academia. In this work, we will analyse the use of ML in fundamental physics and its relationship to other cases that directly affect society. We will deal with different aspects of the issue, from a bibliometric analysis of the publications, to a detailed discussion of the literature, to an overview on the productive and working context inside and outside academia. The analysis will be conducted on the basis of three key elements: the non-neutrality of science, understood as its intrinsic relationship with history and society; the non-neutrality of the algorithms, in the sense of the presence of elements that depend on the choices of the programmer, which cannot be eliminated whatever the technological progress is; the problematic nature of a paradigm shift in favour of a data-driven science (and society). The deconstruction of the presumed universality of scientific thought from the inside becomes in this perspective a necessary first step also for any social and political discussion. This report presents an analysis of #hashtags used by Italian Cultural Heritage institutions to promote and communicate cultural content during the COVID-19 lock-down period in Italy. Several activities to support and engage users' have been proposed using social media. Most of these activities present one or more #hashtags which help to aggregate content and create a community on specific topics. As part of a large Hubble Space Telescope investigation aiming at reaching the faintest stars in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6752, an ACS/WFC field was the subject of deep optical observations reaching magnitudes as faint as V~30. In this field we report the discovery of Bedin I a dwarf spheroidal galaxy too faint and too close to the core of NGC 6752 for detection in earlier surveys. As it is of broad interest to complete the census of galaxies in the local Universe, in this Letter we provide the position of this new object along with preliminary assessments of its main param eters. Assuming the same reddening as for NGC 6752, we estimate a distance modulus of (m-M)_0 = 29.70+/-0.13 from the observed red giant branch, i.e., 8.7 (+0.5 -0.7) Mpc, and size of ~840x340pc, about 1/5 the size of the LMC. A comparison of the observed colour-magnitude diagram with synthetic counterparts that account for the galaxy distance modulus, reddening and photometric errors, suggests the presence of an old (~13Gyr) and metal poor ([Fe/H]~-1.3) population. This document describes the solutions adopted, which arose from the need to transfer a large amount of information between the most famous distributed SQL and NoSQL storage systems to perform analysis and/or modification operations exploiting the peculiarities of the same. The goal was achieved using the Spark engine and studying and using the open source library "Hive Warehouse Connector" made by Hortonworks. It provides new interoperability features between Hive and Spark. The choice fell on these APIs in order to take advantage from Spark's distributed computing through Spark-Sql libraries, to allow a quick reading and writing on the databases chosen by the Network Contacts Systems Engineering Team and to make the stored information available for consultation outside the Ambari cluster. In October 2017 the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), Italy's body for official statistics, has published the book of fairy tales Le streghe di Bayes (The witches of Bayes) written by ISTAT staff members with the commendable aim of introducing statistical and probabilistic reasoning to children. In this paper the fairy tale which gives the name to the book is analyzed in a dialog between three teachers with different background and expertise. The outcomes are definitively discouraging, especially when the story is compared to the appendix of the book, in which the teaching power of every story is indeed explained (as a matter of fact, without the appendix the fairy tale of the witches seemed to be written with the purpose of make the 'Bayesians', meant as the villagers from 'Bayes', ridiculous). In fact the fairy tale of the witches does not contain any Bayesian reasoning, the suggested decision strategy is simply wrong and the story does not even seem to be easily modifiable (besides the trivial correction of the decision strategy) in order to make it usable as a teaching tool. As it happens in real dialogues, besides the fairy tale in question, the dialogue touches several issues somehow related to the story and concerning probability, inference, prediction and decision making. Recently the media broadcast the news, together with illustrative videos, of a so-called Japanese method to perform multiplication by hand without using the multiplication tables. "Goodbye multiplication tables" was the headline of several websites, including important ones, where news are however too often `re-posted' uncritically. The easy numerical examples could induce naive internauts to believe that, in a short future, multiplications could be really done without the knowledge of multiplication tables. This is what a girl expresses, with great enthusiasm, to her father. The declination of the Sun along the year varies according to a sinusoid. Around the solstices this curve is approximated by a parabola. In kinematics a parabola is obtained with a constant acceleration. This acceleration has been estimated in the days 21-29 December 2017, from the measurements taken at the meridian line in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome made by Francesco Bianchini in 1702 with purpose of measuring the variation of the obliquity of the ecliptic. The parabola equation is fitted to the data to obtain the solstice's instant with an accuracy of one hour. The departure of the measures is within 4 arcsec (the daytime seeing during these solar transits) from the ephemerides of IMCCE. The pipeline of the algorithm used to obtain the angular data of the center of the Sun, starting from the ground measurements affected by the atmospheric refraction, and corrected by the Cassini equation, is described. Bianchini in 1703 reduced the error on the solstices timings by using the difference in right ascension between the Sun and a star observed at the same meridian line even in daytime (as he did with Sirius in June-July 1703). The present one is an absolute measurement, without stellar references. The meridian diameter is averagely measured 24 arcsec less than the true value, with 20 arcsec of standard deviation, because of different luminosity contrasts in the sky and in the Basilica. Conversely the center of the image is much better defined (the contrast acts symmetrically without moving the center of the image), allowing an accuracy to the nearest arcsecond in the determination of the true obliquity., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure, 4 links to video of the phenomenon. This paper aims to analyse adolescents' road accidents in Tuscany. The analysis is based on the Database Edit of Osservatorio di Epidemiologia della Toscana. Complexity and heterogeneity of Edit's data represet an interesting scope to apply Machine Learning methods. In particular, in this paper is proposed an analysis based on a Bayesian probabilistic network, used to discover relationships between adolescents' characteristics and behaviours that are more often associated with an audacious driving style.
