The article discusses the results of a study that evaluates the preoperative serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and breast cancer prognosis among Korean women. The study shows that disease-free survival (DFS) was worse among women with the third tertile of MMP-2 level than those with the first tertile of MMP-2 level. It concludes that the preoperative serum levels of MMP-2 were linked with breast cancer survival.

The article reports on the study which evaluates the roles of CYP1A1 polymorphisms and deletion of glutathione S-transferase (GST) in lung cancer development in Asian populations. The study conducted a pooled analysis on 13 existing studies included in Genetic Susceptibility to Environmental Carcinogenesis database. It is revealed that the CYP1A1 6235C variant was associated with squamous cell lung cancer. The GSTM1-null genotype increased squamous cell lung cancer risk.

We propose a new building detection and description algorithm for lidar data and photogrammetric imagery using directional histograms, splitting and merging segments, and line segments matching. Our algorithm consists of three steps. In the first step, we extract initial building regions from lidar data. Here, we apply a modified local maxima technique coupled with directional histograms and the entropies of these histograms. In the second step, given the color segmentation results from the photogrammetric imagery, we extract coarse building boundaries based on the lidar results with region segmentation and merging from aerial imagery. In the third step, we extract precise building boundaries based on the coarse building boundaries using line segments matching and perceptual grouping. Experimental results on multisensor data demonstrate that the proposed algorithm produces accurate and reliable results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which evaluated the association of prostate cancer with genetic polymorphisms in manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD2 V16A). The three main isoforms of SOD are cited. The study used conditional logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals. According to the study, no significant association with prostate cancer was observed for polymorphic variants in SOD3 or SOD1.

We present a new face detection algorithm based on a first-order reduced Coulomb energy (RCE) classifier. The algorithm locates frontal views of human faces at any degree of rotation and scale in complex scenes. The face candidates and their orientations are first determined by computing the Hausdorff distance between simple face abstraction models and binary test windows in an image pyramid. Then, after normalizing the energy, each face candidate is verified by two subsequent classifiers: a binary image classifier and the first-order RCE classifier. While the binary image classifier is employed as a preclassifier to discard nonfaces with minimum computational complexity, the first-order RCE classifier is used as the main face classifier for final verification. An optimal training method to construct the representative face model database is also presented. The article provides information on a study that investigated the role of five single-nucleotide polymorphisms in transforming growth factor Β1 (TGFB1), chosen because of potential functional significance, in relation to prostate cancer risk. It concludes that there is no evidence of association of prostate cancer with five TGFB1 genetic polymorphisms and their haplotypic combinations in Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) trial.
