In the course of 2020-2023, the Centro Studi Piemontesi renewed its commitment to the preservation and promotion of the memory of the history and culture of Piedmont and the ancient Savoy States, both through the targeted purchase of a number of documentary sources available on the antiquarian market, and through the donation of various private documentary collections, accepted with the commitment of taking care of their reorganization, inventorying and utilization. Among the purchases are two letters written by Count Gian Francesco Galeani Napione di Cocconato (1748- 1830) in 1807 and the Catalogo de’ Cavalieri dell’Ordine della Santissima Annunziata drawn up by Giovanni Toja in 1779. The donations include: the valuable series of diplomatic honours given by the heirs of Manlio Brosio (1897-1980), linked to his activities as a minister in the Bonomi, Parri and De Gasperi governments, as an Italian diplomat and as Secretary General of NATO from 1 August 1964 to 1 October 1971; the documentary fonds on journalist and academic Francesco Pastonchi (1874-1953), donated by Count Piero Gondolo della Riva; the war and captivity diary written by Alessandro Forchino during his time as a fighter in World War I, donated by his daughter Gabriella and published by Centro Studi Piemontesi; and the documentary fund on the Vitelli and Losa families, of particular interest for the industrial history of Piedmont. The “Aldo Beldì” archival collection was donated to the Novara State Archives in 2001 by Paolo Beldì. He wanted to avert the dispersion of the professional papers of his father, owner of a major advertising firm from 1945 to 2000. Its reorganization, carried out in 2020, led to the rediscovery of the life and activities of the publicist, born in Novara on May 7, 1922. After studying at the Technical Commercial Institute “Galileo Ferraris,” Beldì joined an amateur drama company in Novara. In 1945, after the war and after a brief stint with the Società Irrigazione Est Sesia and Vittorio Orsini’s Notorius graphic design studio, he opened his own advertising firm. Between 1948 and 1956 he began his work as an illustrator for the sports newspapers “L’Azzurro” and “Forza Novara”. Supported by the group of friends he used to meet at the Menabrea, Coccia and Faraggiana cafes, Beldì immediately showed his creative skills as an exhibition hall fitter: during the 1947 Milan Fair he advertised Renato Bialetti’s (1923-2016) coffee makers by installing a huge mocha pot at the entrance to the exhibition from which coffee came out. The cooperation with Bialetti continued with the design of several exhibition spaces in Milan from 1954 to 1960 and the development of one of the first TV clips for Carosello in 1958. He also had important cooperations with Mario Pavesi (1909-1990) and Carlo Doppieri (1895-1969). In 1973 Studio Beldì started a fruitful collaboration with the Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese Consortium, followed in 1975 by the first works for the Gorgonzola Cheese Protection Consortium, for which it developed graphic and TV advertising campaigns. In the 1980s, it launched the advertisements for Giocattoli Mattel and for large-scale events, such as the “Novarassima” sports and cultural festivals (1982-1984) and the 1987 “Stresa d’Oro”. AldoBeldì was named Cavaliere della Repubblica in 1960; he was appointed Commendatore by President Scalfaro. He died in Novara on February 27, 2000, at the age of 77. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A copy of the volume Cultura e laicità published in 1914 by Gaetano Salvemini, with Antonio Gramsci’s signature, found years ago in a paper mill, adds a few elements to our knowledge of Gramsci’s training and early political activity in Turin. In 1917, he edited a publication published by the Turin editorial office of ‘Avanti!’, entitled La Cittàfutura, in which he included excerpts from writings by Benedetto Croce and Armando Carlini, and a long quotation from Salvemini’s opening essay, entitled Cosa è la coltura, in his words ‘a little book that all young people should read’. In October 1918, 17-year-old Piero Gobetti bought a copy of Gaetano Salvemini’s book, a fundamental cultural and political reference for young Gramsci. Between the late 7th and the early 8th Centuries eleven bishops of Rome were "Greeks", Greek-speakers born in Sicily or in the eastern regions of the Mediterranean world. Many historians labelled those years as the «Byzantine captivity»of the papacy, assuming that "Greek" popes necessarily were imposed by a Byzantine Emperor. On the contrary, it has been argued that Greek popes did not matter, because the city of Rome was politically already Byzantine and culturally Greek, point of arrival of a considerable migration of Easterners who simply rose through the ranks of the Roman ecclesiastical hierarchy. Through the analysis of Agatho's papacy (678-681), the first "Greek" pope, and his role in the Monothelite controversy, it will be shown that the debate should be reopened. Their "Greekness", neither ethnic nor political, but cultural, did matter, and it shaped the cultural, political and ideological history of the papacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of ICT has important consequences on social experience and on the processes of subjectivation. These changes have contributed to undermining some assumptions of sociological theory, such as the status of subject and object of knowledge, the concepts of actor, action and the social, the conditions of possibility of social criticism. The paper reconstructs some of the main logic of transformation of these assumptions, moving from a discussion of L. Gallino's theses on the relationship between subjectivity, socio-technical change of the web, changes in the elaboration of knowledge and new forms of social criticism. It shows how the epistemic shift generated by these changes leads to an anti-essentialist critique of sociological categories. In this line some critical potentialities of the Actor-Network Theory concepts, of the Goffmanian category of frame and of the infra-empirical perspective proposed by the socio-analysis are shown. By using unpublished documents, the essay retraces the funerals that were officiated in Modena during the first half of the seventeenth century and investigates, for the first time, the ceremonials and catafalques built in honour of Alfonso II (1599), Virginia de' Medici (1615), Isabella of Savoy (1626), Cesare d'Este (1629), Maria Farnese (1646) and Vittoria Farnese (1649). The contribution shows the decorative choices made for the Este family funerals, the iconographies in honour of the departed and the names of the artists who created them. The study includes the reports of the XVII century chronicles and contributions of ambassadors who took part in the Este ceremonies to demonstrate the high political meaning of the ephemeral funerary conceived and developed in the ducal court. The aim of this paper is to reconsider the use of “paper", from the raw materials to the writing sheet. An ephemeral material, the paper, but pervasive and malleable, paper is used for a variety of purposes, suitable to answer the demand for devotional objects or tools for public ceremonies. What has come down to us, in many cases, are objects quite difficult to compare but worth to be studied since they are suitable to provide an unusual perspective on the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance Italy and lead to a revaluation of the paper as a powerful means of expression. One of the earliest sources for Antonello da Messina's paintings is the valuable manuscript written by Marcantonio Michiel and entitled Notizia d 'opere di disegno (Venice, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana). Beginning in 1521, Michiel took over twenty years to add to his opus magnum. The manuscript shows evidence of many layers and kinds of writing and employs different types of ink, indicating that the material was continually updated and amended. An examination of the document leads to new insights, especially concerning Michiel's description of Antonello's Saint Jerome in his Study (London, National Gallery) and two of the artist's portraits dated 1475, once in the home of Antonio Pasqualini, a wealthy Venetian merchant Archival research together with an investigation of literary sources encourages new readings of Antonello's paintings and their Venetian patrons and owners. Analyzing and comparing the cartellini and labels on these works calls for new interpretations. Such is the case for example of the Portrait of a Young Man (Berlin, Staatliche Museen), formerly in the Widmann and Vitturi collections in Venice, whereby a new proposal can be suggested by identifying the source of the moralizing inscription at the bottom edge of the panel. New research also sanctions the correction and integration of previously known information on the basis of the valuable Manoscritti Francesconi. This essay also discusses unpublished documents and analyzes letters and auction catalogues in order to enrich our understanding of Antonello's critical fortunes in Venice over time. Among this material is a new transcription of the letter sent by Pietro Summonte to Michiel in 1524, inventories of Bartolomeo dalla Nave's paintings, lists of works of art bought in Venice by John Strange, letters written by Alexander Hamilton, unpublished notes by Jacopo Morelli and, finally, wills and inventories of members of the Cornaro and Mocenigo families. Some years ago the authors of the present paper found in the Fondo Padoa lying in the Mathematical Library of Genoa University a manuscript of 11 pages by Alessandro Padoa with the title A proposito di un nuovo sistema fondamentale della geometria elementare. It seems to be ready for publication and contains also typographical instruction for printing. Other investigations on Padoa and his rôle in Peano's school led in a series of recent papers to a probably complete list of Padoa's publications where, however, the above mentioned manuscript is not present and, therefore, is likely to be considered an unpublished paper. It's a matter of fact that the whole of Padoa's scientific production has to be integrated by some works that he didn't publish. The unpublished paper under examination deals with the axiomatization of elementary geometry given by Mario Pieri in 1899 in "Della geometria elementare come sistema ipotetico deduttivo. Monografia del punto e del moto", where, as it is well-known, elementary geometry is based on the primitive notions of point and movement and on 20 postulates. Padoa agrees with Pieri's proposal to define segment starting from point and movement; he suggests, however, some modification to the original set of postulates and gives a (partial) proof of their independence. The unpublished paper reveals the interest of Padoa in this subject-matter and, in some sense, his idea of participating in the already consolidated field of research represented by Pieri's results. The article discusses the strategies adopted by schools to manage scholastic daily paper of pupils who have migrated from Bosnia to Turin, Italy. It analyzes some aspects of the pupils' behavior and the way in which they perceive and live in the scholastic atmosphere. The analysis attributes the scholastic failure of these pupils to cultural factors and presumed cognitive deficit. A school has a double role, including an educational function of the formation of citizens and to prepare students for the working life. Both these aspects send back to the integration concept and presuppose the school as a total immersion space where there is a positive integration of children to structure a small society beyond the fundamental condition for learning.

The article discusses the portrait of 16th century Italian philologist and literary critic Lodovico Castelvetro presented by the work "Vita di Lodovico Castelvetro," by Lodovico Antonio Muratori. Topics discussed include accusations of heresy against Castelvetro, the aims of Muratori in establishing historical information on Castelvetro, and legal information used by Muratori in writing the biography.

The article focuses on the documents of Pope Bonifacio VIII for the University of Lleida, Spain between 1294-1303. Topics discussed include petitions made by King James II of Aragon to Pope, preservation of his documents in the royal archives, diplomacy of medieval papal documents, documents on papal residency and typology of litterae gratiaè. It further discusses local cathedrals in the papal chancellery, analogies on Bonifacio VIII, equalization between universities and privileges given to popes.

The article discusses the Christian mission to India during the 17th to 18th centuries, with a focus on the theological and practical challenges of adapting Catholic practice to people living under the Indian system of social castes, and in particular the difficulty of adapting to the social and Hinduism related concept and practice of the pariah class, which was separated from other castes in Indian society, as well as the internal debate between Catholic centers in Rome and practicing missionaries over the administration of sacraments to the pariah class and the Malabar rite of Catholicism.

The article discusses the history of representation of live animals in art. Specifically, it describes the influence of natural history on such art since the late 1700's. Among other topics addressed are the book "The Art of Natural History: Animal Illustrators and Their Work" by American author S. Peter Dance, Dance's classification system for artists representing animals in their work, and various specific artists.

Taking their inspiration from philosophy, human sciences have learnt that collecting people's life history is fundamental to understand and clarify situations and the «lebenswelt» of human beings. Life histories and the narrations of self provide the human scientist a deeper wiew and comprehension of the causes and reasons that other methodologies, such as observation, cannot get. Everyone is a storyteller of himself and such narrations of self enable us to know the invisible and the inner life of all our similars. Starting from this convinction Duccio Demetrio sees writing as a fundamental exercise that everyone should do in order to get a better knowledge of himself. The incomplete paper by Max Weber, Georg Simmel as Sociologist is published for the first time in Italian. The author of the introduction treats this publication - that he edited and whose translation from German he supervised - as an occasion to underline the importance of the relationship between Weber and Simmel and to briefly summarize the complex debate emerged from the studies- now numerous-on this topic. Moreover he poses some interrogative about the interpretation proposed in 1972 by D.N. The article examines an inventory of the merchandise present in a Florentine stationer's shop in 1348. The list not only provides a record of the goods, but also includes their market value, enabling the valuation of the paper notebooks contained in the shop. As a result, it becomes feasible to determine the very high cost of the four large paper notebooks considered a few years earlier as having an equivalent value as the renowned code of Dante's Comedy owned by Giovanni Villani.
