Abstract
- The article discusses the Christian mission to India during the 17th to 18th centuries, with a focus on the theological and practical challenges of adapting Catholic practice to people living under the Indian system of social castes, and in particular the difficulty of adapting to the social and Hinduism related concept and practice of the pariah class, which was separated from other castes in Indian society, as well as the internal debate between Catholic centers in Rome and practicing missionaries over the administration of sacraments to the pariah class and the Malabar rite of Catholicism.
