Objectives . This study aims to report clinical features and treatment outcomes of 16 cases diagnosed with post-influenza encephalopathy/encephalitis. Methods . We recorded clinical characteristics of 16 pediatric patients diagnosed with post-influenza encephalopathy/encephalitis at the Vietnam National Children's Hospital from January 2019 to January 2021. Results . There were 87.5% infected with influenza A, with influenza A/H1pdm09 and influenza A/H3 accounting for 88.9% and 11.1% respectively, and 12.5% of participants infected with influenza B. The time from onset to the appearance of neurological symptoms was 3 days, of which perceptual changes (93.8%), hypertonia (75%), and seizures (43.8%) were prevalent neurological symptoms. The majority of cases had normal cerebrospinal fluid. Cranial CT/MRI imaging revealed abnormalities in 87.5% of patients. 56.3% of patients had sequelae, including epilepsy and cerebral palsy; 25% recovered, and 18.8% died after treatment. Conclusions . Sixteen PAHs in ambient air samples collected from residential and roadside areas in the Hanoi metropolitan were investigated. Total PAH concentrations in the ambient air samples ranged from 45.0 to 451 ng/m 3 . Among PAHs, phenanthrene was found at the most abundant and highest levels. The distributions of PAHs in the ambient air collected in the dry season were on average 26% higher than in the wet season. The PAH concentrations in the air samples collected from the traffic areas were significantly higher (about 2.7 times) than those in the residential areas, indicating that these chemicals originated from motor vehicles. According to vertical, the PAH concentrations found in the ambient air samples collected from the ground floor were significantly higher than on the upper level, however, there was not much difference when going higher (from 24 m (8th floor) to 111 m (37th floor)). The human exposure doses were estimated for two age groups (adults and children) based on the measured PAH concentrations, the inhalation rates, and body weights. The estimated exposure doses to PAHs through inhalation for adults/children were 1.13/2.86 (ng/kg-bw/d) (residential areas) and 3.24/8.18 (ng/kg-bw/d) (traffic areas), respectively. The average lifetime excess cancer risk (ECR) from inhalation exposure to PAHs was 3.0 × 10 -4 at the traffic areas and 1.4 × 10 -4 at the residential areas. Objective: Given the population-level variation in stature, a universal cut-off for waist circumference (WC) may not be appropriate for some populations. We compared the performance of WC and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) to detect the clustering of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in rural Vietnam., Methods: We obtained data from a baseline survey of the Khanh Hoa Cardiovascular Study comprising 2942 middle-aged residents (40-60 years). We used areas under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC), net reclassification index (NRI), and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) to compare the performance of WC and WHtR in predicting CVD risk clustering (≥2 of the following risk factors: hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and elevated C-reactive protein)., Results: The optimal cut-off values for WC were 81.8 and 80.7 cm for men and women, respectively. Regarding the clustering of CVD risk factors, the AUROC (95% CI) of WC and WHtR were 0.707 (0.676 to 0.739) and 0.719 (0.689 to 0.749) in men, and 0.682 (0.654 to 0.709) and 0.690 (0.663 to 0.717) in women, respectively. Compared with WC, WHtR had a better NRI (0.229; 0.102-0.344) and IDI (0.012; 0.004-0.020) in men and a better NRI (0.154; 0.050-0.257) in women., Conclusions: The optimal WC cut-off for Vietnamese men was approximately 10 cm below the recommended Asian cut-off. Water resources play a crucial role in the global water cycle and are affected by human activities and climate change. However, the impacts of hydropower infrastructures on the surface water extent and volume cycle are not well known. We used a multi-satellite approach to quantify the surface water storage variations over the 2000-2020 period and relate these variations to climate-induced and anthropogenic factors over the whole basin. Our results highlight that dam operations have strongly modified the water regime of the Mekong River, exhibiting a 55 % decrease in the seasonal cycle amplitude of inundation extent (from 3178 km 2 to 1414 km 2 ) and a 70 % decrease in surface water volume (from 1109 km 3 to 327 km 3 ) over 2000-2020. In the floodplains of the Lower Mekong Basin, where rice is cultivated, there has been a decline in water residence time by 30 to 50 days. The recent commissioning of big dams (2010 and 2014) has allowed us to choose 2015 as a turning point year. Results show a trend inversion in rice production, from a rise of 40 % between 2000 and 2014 to a decline of 10 % between 2015 and 2020, and a strong reduction in aquaculture growth, from +730 % between 2000 and 2014, to +53 % between 2015 and 2020. All these results show the negative impact of dams on the Mekong basin, causing a 70 % decline in surface water volumes, with major repercussions for agriculture and fisheries over the period 2000-2020. Therefore, new future projects such as the Funan Techo canal in Cambodia, scheduled to start construction at the end of 2024, will particularly affect 1300 km 2 of floodplains in the lower Mekong basin, with a reduction in the amount of water received, and other areas will be subjected to flooding. Background: Perioperative practices have been introduced over the last decade to decrease the risk of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). We sought to determine whether rates of revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for PJI decreased during the period 2006-2016., Methods: This observational cohort study used data from the New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System to identify patients undergoing TKA in 2006-2016. Data through 2017 were used to determine if patients underwent revision TKA for PJI (including debridement, antibiotics and implant retention) within 1 year of the primary surgery. A generalized estimating equation model, clustered by hospital, was used to examine the impact of time on likelihood of revision TKA for PJI., Results: In 2006-2016, 233,165 primary TKAs performed were included. Mean age was 66.1 (standard deviation 10.3) years, and 65% were women. Overall, 0.5% of the patients underwent revision TKA for PJI within 1 year of surgery. The generalized estimating equation model showed that for primary TKA performed in 2006-2013, year of surgery did not impact the likelihood of revision TKA for PJI (odds ratio 1.00, 95% confidence interval 0.97-1.03, P  = .9221), but that for primary TKA performed in 2014-2016, the likelihood decreased by year (odds ratio 0.76, 95% confidence interval 0.66-0.88, P  = .0002)., Conclusions: The likelihood of revision TKA for PJI was stable from 2006 to 2013 but declined during the period 2014-2016 across patient and hospital categories. Background: Vietnam continues to have measles and rubella outbreaks following supplementary immunization activities (SIA) and routine immunization despite both having high reported coverage. To evaluate immunization activities, age-specific immunity against measles and rubella, and the number of averted Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) cases, must be estimated., Methods: Dried blood spots were collected from 2091 randomly selected individuals aged 1-39 years. Measles and rubella virus-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) were measured by enzyme immunoassay. Results were considered positive at ≥120 mIU/mL for measles and ≥10 IU/mL for rubella. The number of CRS cases averted by immunization since 2014 were estimated using mathematical modelling., Results: Overall IgG seroprevalence was 99.7% (95%CI: 99.2-99.9) for measles and 83.6% (95%CI: 79.3-87.1) for rubella. Rubella IgG seroprevalence was higher among age groups targeted in the SIA than in non-targeted young adults (95.4% [95%CI: 92.9-97.0] vs 72.4% [95%CI: 63.1-80.1]; P < 0.001). The estimated number of CRS cases averted in 2019 by immunization activities since 2014 ranged from 126 (95%CI: 0-460) to 883 (95%CI: 0-2271) depending on the assumed postvaccination reduction in the force of infection., Conclusions: The results suggest the SIA was effective, while young adults born before 1998 who remain unprotected for rubella require further vaccination., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Objective: Mammalian somatic cells can be reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) via the forced expression of Yamanaka reprogramming factors. However, only a limited population of the cells that pass through a particular pathway can metamorphose into iPSCs, while the others do not. This study aimed to clarify the pathways that chondrocytes follow during the reprogramming process., Design: The fate of human articular chondrocytes under reprogramming was investigated through a time-coursed single-cell transcriptomic analysis, which we termed an inverse genetic approach. The iPS interference technique was also employed to verify that chondrocytes inversely return to pluripotency following the proper differentiation pathway., Results: We confirmed that human chondrocytes could be converted into cells with an iPSC phenotype. Moreover, it was clarified that a limited population that underwent the silencing of SOX9, a master gene for chondrogenesis, at a specific point during the proper transcriptome transition pathway, could eventually become iPSCs. Interestingly, the other cells, which failed to be reprogrammed, followed a distinct pathway toward cells with a surface zone chondrocyte phenotype. The critical involvement of cellular communication network factors (CCNs) in this process was indicated. The idea that chondrocytes, when reprogrammed into iPSCs, follow the differentiation pathway backward was supported by the successful iPS interference using SOX9., Conclusions: This inverse genetic strategy may be useful for seeking candidates for the master genes for the differentiation of various somatic cells. The literature on green tea consumption and glucose metabolism has reported conflicting findings. This cross-sectional study examined the association of green tea consumption with abnormal glucose metabolism among 3000 rural residents aged 40-60 years in Khánh Hòa province in Vietnam. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the association of green tea consumption (0, < 200, 200-< 400, 400-< 600 or ≥ 600 ml/d) with prediabetes and diabetes (based on the American Diabetes Association criteria). Linear regression analysis was performed to examine the association between green tea consumption and the log-transformed homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (a marker of insulin resistance) and the log-transformed homeostatic model assessment of β -cell function (HOMA- β ) (a marker of insulin secretion). The OR for prediabetes and diabetes among participants who consumed ≥ 600 ml/d v . those who did not consume green tea were 1·61 (95 % CI = 1·07, 2·42) and 2·04 (95 % CI = 1·07, 3·89), respectively. Higher green tea consumption was associated with a higher level of log-transformed HOMA-IR ( P for trend = 0·04) but not with a lower level of log-transformed HOMA- β ( P for trend = 0·75). Higher green tea consumption was positively associated with the prevalence of prediabetes, diabetes and insulin resistance in rural Vietnam. The findings of this study indicated prompting the need for further research considering context in understanding the link between green tea consumption and glucose metabolism, especially in rural settings in low- and middle-income countries.

Light-matter interaction between quantum emitters and optical cavities plays a vital role in fundamental quantum photonics and the development of optoelectronics. Resonant metasurfaces are proven to be an efficient platform for tailoring the spontaneous emission (SE) of the emitters. In this work, we study the interplay between quasi-2D perovskites and dielectric TiO 2 metasurfaces. The metasurface, functioning as an open cavity, enhances electric fields near its plane, thereby influencing the emissions of the perovskite. This is verified through angle-resolved photoluminescence (PL) studies. We also conducted reflectivity measurements and numerical simulations to validate the coupling between the quasi-2D perovskites and photonic modes. Notably, our work introduces a spatial mapping approach to study Purcell enhancement. Using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), we directly link the PL and lifetimes of the quasi-2D perovskites in spatial distribution when positioned on the metasurface. This correlation provides unprecedented insights into emitter distribution and emitter-resonator interactions. The methodology opens a new (to the best of our knowledge) approach for studies in quantum optics, optoelectronics, and medical imaging by enabling spatial mapping of both PL intensity and lifetime, differentiating between uncoupled quantum emitters and those coupled with different types of resonators.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the leading causes of death in Vietnam. Survivors of TBI suffer from functional and cognitive deficits. Understanding that Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) are crucial in measuring the treatment and health-related quality of life among patients with TBI. This study aims to evaluate ADLs and IADLs among the TBI population in Vietnam and determine the correlated factors to these two indices. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 212 patients with TBI in Vietnam from February to September 2020. ADLs and IADLs scales were applied. Depression, quality of sleep, and social support scales were used. Multivariate Tobit regression was adopted to identify factors associated with ADLs and IADLs. Patients who received first aid had higher ADLs scores than those who had not, by a statistical difference with a p value = 0.04. The mean ADLs score was 5.4 (SD = 1.4). The mean score of IADLs was 7.3 (SD = 1.7). Female patients (Mean = 7.6, SD = 1.1) performed better in IADLs than male patients (Mean = 7.1, SD = 1.9). Both ADLs and IADLs were affected strongly by depression and Injury Severity scores (p < 0.01), whereas IADLs were significantly correlated to caregiver types and quality of sleep (p < 0.01). Family support was observed as a negatively correlated factor to IADLs. Findings from the study provided evidence for authorities to adjust the health strategies among patients with TBI. Purpose: To investigate the prevalence and factors associated with frailty and impact of frailty on hospitalization due to any cause in elderly patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS)., Patients and Methods: We conducted a study wherein we assessed frailty using Fried frailty phenotype for outpatients aged ≥60 years with CCS. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the factors associated with frailty. Frailty was adjusted for demographic and geriatric variables and comorbidities to assess its impact on hospitalization., Results: Overall, 420 patients (median age 70 years [interquartile range, 65-77]; men, 74.5%) who completed the 3-month follow-up period were analyzed. Coronary revascularization for > 1 year was the most common clinical scenario for CCS (59.8%; n = 251). The prevalence of non-frail, pre-frail, and frail patients were 22.4% (n = 94), 49.7% (n = 209), and 27.9% (n = 117), respectively. In the adjusted model, three factors associated with frailty were age ≥ 75 years (odds ratio [OR] 2.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.39-3.75, P = 0.001), limitations in instrumental activity of daily living (OR 3.89, 95% CI 2.33-6.48, P < 0.001), and heart failure (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.32-4.02, P = 0.003). The overall 3-month hospitalization rate was higher in frail patients than in non-frail patients (23.9% vs 13.5%, P = 0.012). Frailty was associated with hospitalization (OR 1.85, 95% CI 1.04-3.30, P = 0.037) but in a weak strength of association (r = 0.126)., Conclusion: The prevalence of frailty was 27.9% in the elderly patients with CCS. Age ≥ 75 years, limitations in functional status, and heart failure were associated with increased odds of frailty. The underestimation of the pertussis burden prompted our study to investigate the prevalence of recent pertussis infection, its associated factors, and antibody titer changes in the same individuals in Vietnam. Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted in Nha Trang in 2017 and Quang Ngai in 2019, representing high- and low-vaccine-coverage areas, respectively. Serum anti-pertussis toxin immunoglobulin-G (anti-PT IgG) ≥ 62.5 IU/mL by ELISA indicated infection in the previous 12 months. In Nha Trang, the participants of the 2017 survey were followed up in 2019. Logistic regression was used to determine the odds ratios for the characteristics associated with anti-PT IgG ≥ 62.5. The age-stratified prevalence in patients aged >2 years ranged from 2.1% (age 26-35) to 9.6% (3-5) in Nha Trang (2017) and from 7.2% (age 26-35) to 11.4% (6-15) in Quang Ngai. The prevalence tended to be higher in Quang Ngai across all age groups. Cough, recent antibiotic use, and smoking in Nha Trang were positively associated with an anti-PT IgG of ≥62.5, and having been diagnosed with pertussis and persistent cough with paroxysms/whoop in Quang Ngai were positively associated with an anti-PT IgG of ≥62.5. No nasopharyngeal swabs were positive for Bordetella pertussis using real-time PCR. The geometric mean of the IgG titer ratio from 2019 to 2017 was 1.45 in the paired samples. This study emphasizes Bordetella pertussis circulation across all age groups in both low- and high-vaccine-coverage settings in Vietnam, underscoring the need for continuous and standardized surveillance for a comprehensive understanding of its epidemiology.

Background: Several studies have examined the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and the proportion of untreated hypertension, but have produced conflicting findings. In addition, no study has been conducted to determine sex differences in the association between SES and untreated hypertension. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine whether the associations between SES and the proportion of untreated hypertension differed by sex in Vietnam., Methods: This study was conducted using the data of 1189 individuals (558 males and 631 females) who were judged to have hypertension during the baseline survey of a prospective cohort study of 3000 residents aged 40-60 years in the Khánh Hòa Province. A multilevel Poisson regression model with a robust variance estimator was used to examine whether sex and SES indicators (household income and educational attainment) interacted in relation to untreated hypertension., Results: The proportion of untreated hypertension among individuals identified as hypertensive was 69.1%. We found significant interaction between sex and SES indicators in relation to untreated hypertension (education: p < 0.001; household income: p < 0.001). Specifically, the association between SES and untreated hypertension was inverse among males while it was rather positive among females., Conclusions: Our finding suggests that the role of SES in the proportion of untreated hypertension might differ by sex., (© 2024. Objectives: To estimate the cost and affordability of healthy diets recommended by the 2016-2020 Vietnamese food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG)., Design: Cross-sectional analysis. The Cost of a Healthy Diet (CoHD) indicator was used to estimate the lowest cost of healthy diets and compare the cost differences by food group, region and seasonality. The affordability of healthy diets was measured by further comparing the CoHD to food expenditures and incomes., Setting: Food prices of 176 food items from January 2016 to December 2020 were derived using data from monthly Consumer Price Index databases nationally and regionally., Participants: Food expenditures and incomes of participants from three latest Vietnam Household Living Standard Surveys were used., Results: The average CoHD between 2016 and 2020 in Vietnam was 3·08 international dollars using 2017 Purchasing Power Parity (24 070 Vietnamese Dongs). The nutrient-rich food groups, including protein-rich foods, vegetables, fruits and dairy, comprised approximately 80 % of the total CoHD in all regions, with dairy accounting for the largest proportion. Between 2016 and 2020, the cheapest form of a healthy diet was affordable for all high-income and upper-middle-income households but unaffordable for approximately 70 % of low-income households, where adherence to the Vietnamese FBDG can cost up to 70 % of their income., Conclusions: Interventions in local food systems must be implemented to reduce the cost of nutrient-rich foods to support the attainment of healthier diets in the Vietnamese population, especially for low-income households.

Falls are a leading cause of death among elderly people. However, research on the cost of fall-related injuries is limited in Vietnam. We estimated treatment costs and associated factors among 405 elderly patients in Thai Binh hospitals. Costs were estimated through self-reported data on medical and non-medical expenses. Logistic regression and GLM were used to identify payment and affordability factors. Inpatient and outpatient care costs for fall-related injuries were US$98.06 and US$8.53, respectively. 11.85% of participants couldn't pay for treatment. Payment ability and cost decline were linked to family income, medical history, and hospital stay length. Elderly with fall-related injuries in Vietnam experienced high costs and severe health issues. Primary healthcare services and communication campaigns should be strengthened to reduce disease burden and develop effective fall injury prevention strategies., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Background: Black patients are at an increased risk of aseptic revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) when compared to White patients. The goal of this study was to determine whether racial disparities in revision TKA risk are related to surgeon characteristics., Methods: This was an observational cohort study. We used inpatient administrative data to identify Black patients who underwent unilateral primary TKA in New York State. There were 21,948 Black patients who were matched 1:1 to White patients on age, sex, ethnicity, and insurance type. The primary outcome was aseptic revision TKA within 2 years of primary TKA. We calculated annual surgeon TKA volume and identified surgeon characteristics such as training in North America, board certification, and years of experience., Results: Black patients had a higher odds of aseptic revision TKA (odds ratio (OR) 1.32, 95% CI 1.12-1.54, P < .001) and were disproportionately cared for by low volume surgeons (≤12 TKA/year). The relationship between low volume surgeons and risk of aseptic revision was not statistically significant (OR 1.24, 95% CI 0.72-2.11, P = .436). The adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for aseptic revision TKA in Black versus White patients varied across surgeon/hospital TKA volume category pairs, with the greatest aOR when TKA were performed by the highest volume surgeons at the highest volume hospitals (aOR 2.8, 95% CI 0.98- 8.09, P = .055)., Conclusion: Black patients were more likely to undergo aseptic TKA revision than matched White patients. Background: Press Ganey (PG) inpatient survey is widely used to track patient satisfaction with the hospital experience. Our aim was to use the PG survey to determine if there are racial differences in overall hospital experience and perception of nurses and surgeons following hip and knee arthroplasty., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed Black and White patients from hip and knee arthroplasty registries from a single institution between July 2010 and February 2012. The overall assessment score for the hospital experience and perception of the nurse and surgeon questions from the PG inpatient survey were dichotomized as "not completely satisfied" or "completely satisfied". Multivariable logistic regression models were developed to determine the impact of race on the likelihood of being 'completely satisfied' in the hip and knee cohorts., Results: There were 2517 hip and 2114 knee patients who underwent surgery and completed the PG survey, of whom 3.9% were Black and 96.0% were White. Black patients were less likely to be completely satisfied with their hospital experience compared to White patients in the hip (odds ratio 0.62, confidence interval 0.39-1.00, P  = .049) and knee (odds ratio 0.52, confidence interval 0.33-0.82, P  = .005) cohorts. Black patients were also less likely to be completely satisfied with multiple aspects of care they received from the nurse and surgeon in both cohorts., Conclusions: We found that the PG Survey shows Black patients were less likely to be completely satisfied than White patients with the hospital experience, including their interactions with nurses and surgeons. More work is needed to understand this difference.

A series of potent, selective, and highly permeable human neuronal nitric oxide synthase inhibitors (hnNOS), based on a difluorobenzene ring linked to a 2-aminopyridine scaffold with different functionalities at the 4-position, is reported. In our efforts to develop novel nNOS inhibitors for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, we discovered 17 , which showed excellent potency toward both rat ( K i 15 nM) and human nNOS ( K i 19 nM), with 1075-fold selectivity over human eNOS and 115-fold selectivity over human iNOS. 17 also showed excellent permeability ( P e = 13.7 × 10 -6 cm s -1 ), a low efflux ratio (ER 0.48), along with good metabolic stability in mouse and human liver microsomes, with half-lives of 29 and >60 min, respectively. X-ray cocrystal structures of inhibitors bound with three NOS enzymes, namely, rat nNOS, human nNOS, and human eNOS, revealed detailed structure-activity relationships for the observed potency, selectivity, and permeability properties of the inhibitors.

This study aimed to explore the research landscape of intimate partner violence (IPV)-harm-induced behavior in an intimate relationship and HIV/AIDS to determine lessons learnt and gaps that may be filled by future research. Publications related to IPV, and HIV/AIDS published from 1997 to 2019 were collected from Web of Science (WoS). STATA and VOSviewer software tools were used for bibliometric analysis. Content analysis, common topics, and the map of co-occurrence terms were structured by Latent Dirichlet allocation and VOSviewer software tool. 941 studies were included. Factors associated with domestic violence and interventions to reduce IPV were the two most common themes. Meanwhile, mental health illness among pregnant women affected by HIV and IPV, and HIV-risk among youth suffering from IPV have not received adequate attention. We suggest that more research focusing on adolescents and pregnant women affected by HIV and IPV. Introduction. Diphtheria is a potentially life-threatening infection and remains endemic in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A reliable, low-cost method for serosurveys in LMICs is warranted to estimate the accurate population immunity to control diphtheria. Hypothesis/Gap Statement. The correlation between the ELISA results against diphtheria toxoid and the gold standard diphtheria toxin neutralization test (TNT) values is poor when ELISA values are <0.1 IU ml -1 , which results in inaccurate estimates of susceptibility in populations when ELISA is used for measuring antibody levels. Aim. To explore methods to accurately predict population immunity and TNT-derived anti-toxin titres from ELISA anti-toxoid results. Methodology. A total of 96 paired serum and dried blood spot (DBS) samples collected in Vietnam were used for comparison of TNT and ELISA. The diagnostic accuracy of ELISA measurement with reference to TNT was assessed by area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) and other parameters. Optimal ELISA cut-off values corresponding to TNT cut-off values of 0.01 and 0.1 IU ml -1 were identified by ROC analysis. A method based on the multiple imputation approach was also applied to estimate TNT measurements in a dataset that only included ELISA results. These two approaches were then applied to ELISA results previously generated from 510 subjects in a serosurvey in Vietnam. Results. The ELISA results on DBS samples showed a good diagnostic performance compared to TNT. The cut-off values for ELISA measurement corresponding to the TNT cut-off values of 0.01 IU ml -1 were 0.060 IU ml -1 in serum samples, and 0.044 IU ml -1 in DBS samples. When a cut-off value of 0.06 IU ml -1 was applied to the 510 subject serosurvey data, 54 % of the population were considered susceptible (<0.01 IU ml -1 ). The multiple imputation-based approach estimated that 35 % of the population were susceptible. These proportions were much larger than the susceptible proportion estimated by the original ELISA measurements. Conclusion. Testing a subset of sera by TNT combined with ROC analysis or a multiple imputation approach helps to adjust ELISA thresholds or values to assess population susceptibility more accurately. DBS is an effective low-cost alternative to serum for future serological studies for diphtheria.

Backgrounds: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in not only significant mortalities in Vietnam but has had an impact on its economy. Previous studies have highlighted how the pandemic has had a marginal impact on Vietnamese healthcare workers working at the frontlines. To date, there have been several other studies examining the impact of COVID-19 on intentions to transition between jobs among healthcare professionals, but this has yet to be explored amongst Vietnamese healthcare workers., Methods: To achieve the study's objectives an online cross-sectional study was conducted between September to November 2021. Snowball sampling methodology was adopted for the recruitment of participants. The questionnaire that was used for this study comprised of the following sections: (a) socio-demographic information; (b) impact of COVID-19 on work; (c) risk of exposure to COVID-19; (d) career choices/intentions to change job, and (e) motivation at work., Results: There were 5727 completed the entire survey. 17.2% of the respondents have had increased job satisfaction, 26.4% reported increased motivation to work, and 40.9% reported decreased motivation to work. Whilst there were changes in the daily work intensity and the level of work-related stress, more than 60% of respondents we sampled did not intend to switch careers. Demographic variables like gender, whether one was a student or an existing healthcare worker, and income related to work motivation. The community's stigma was a negative factor that declined intrinsic motivation as well as decreased work retention., Conclusions: Our study is instrumental in identifying the impact of COVID-19 on career choices amongst Vietnamese healthcare workers. Objective: To examine the association between red/processed meat consumption and glycaemic conditions (i.e. prediabetes (preDM) and diabetes mellitus (DM)) among middle-aged residents in rural Khánh Hòa, Vietnam., Design: In this cross-sectional study, a multinomial logistic regression model was used to examine the association between daily consumption of red/processed meat (0-99 g, 100-199 g or ≥ 200 g) and preDM/DM with adjustments for socio-demographic, lifestyle-related and health-related variables., Setting: Khánh Hòa Province, Vietnam., Participants: The study used data collected through a baseline survey conducted during a prospective cohort study on CVD among 3000 residents, aged 40-60 years, living in rural communes in Khánh Hòa Province., Results: The multinomial regression model revealed that the relative-risk ratios for DM were 1·00 (reference), 1·11 (95 % CI = 0·75, 1·62) and 1·80 (95 % CI = 1·40, 2·32) from the lowest to the highest red/processed meat consumption categories ( P trend = 0·006). The corresponding values for preDM were 1·00 (reference), 1·25 (95 % CI = 1·01, 1·54) and 1·67 (95 % CI = 1·20, 2·33) ( P trend = 0·004). We did not find any evidence of statistical significance in relation to poultry consumption., Conclusion: Increased red/processed meat consumption, but not poultry consumption, was positively associated with the prevalence of preDM/DM in rural communes in Khánh Hòa Province, Vietnam. Dietary recommendations involving a reduction in red/processed meat consumption should be considered in low- and middle-income countries.

Objective: To evaluate and compare the oral neutrophil numbers (ONN) in saliva, the level of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and the periodontal parameters in smokers versus non-smokers with periodontitis, before and after nonsurgical periodontal treatment (NSPT)., Materials and Method: 40 chronic periodontitis patients including 20 smokers and 20 non-smokers were enrolled in this quasi-experimental study. All patients were received the NSPT included instructing oral hygiene, scaling and root planing. At baseline (T0) and after NSPT 1 month (T1) and 3 months (T3), all patients were assessed for salivary ONN, GCF MMP-8, and clinical parameters like plaque index (PlI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL). The differences between the two groups were analyzed using the independent sample t -test and the Mann-Whitney U test; and the differences between T0, T1 and T3 of each group were analyzed with paired-samples t -test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The level of significance was set at 0.05., Results: The ONN was significantly less in smokers than in non-smokers although there was no significant difference in other parameters between the two groups at baseline (p > 0.05). All clinical periodontal parameters reduced significantly after 1 month and 3 months of NSPT in both groups (p < 0.01). PPD of non-smokers was significantly lower than those of smokers at T1 and T3. ONN and MMP-8 level showed a significant decrease in non-smoking subjects, while there was no significant difference in smoking ones after NSPT (T1 and T3). At 1 month after treatment, ONN tended to reduce in non-smokers whereas to increase in smokers significantly., Conclusion: Smoking reduced ONN, impaired treatment effect in reducing PPD, and changed the MMP-8 level in gingival crevicular fluid to NSPT., Trial Registration: Identifier NCT04974502 in CLinicalTrials.gov., (© 2023 The Authors.)

Background: In contrast to high-income countries where physical activity (PA), particularly leisure-time PA, has been shown to be protective against hypertension, few studies have been conducted in low- and middle-income countries. We examined the cross-sectional association between PA and hypertension prevalence among rural residents in Vietnam., Methods: We used data collected in the baseline survey of a prospective cohort study, among 3000 people aged 40-60 years old residing in rural Khánh Hòa, Vietnam. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg, or the use of antihypertensive medication. We assessed occupational PA and leisure-time PA using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. A robust Poisson regression model was used to investigate the associations, with adjustment for covariates., Results: The prevalence of hypertension was 39.6%. After adjusting for socio-demographic and lifestyle-related variables, leisure-time PA was positively associated with hypertension prevalence (prevalence ratio [PR]: 1.03 per 10 MET-hour/week, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-1.06). Occupational PA was inversely associated with hypertension prevalence (PR: 0.98 per 50 MET-hour/week, 95% CI = 0.96-0.996). After adjusting for BMI and other health-related variables, the association related to occupational PA became statistically non-significant, while the association related to leisure-time PA remained statistically significant., Conclusion: In contrast to previous studies in high-income countries, we found that leisure-time PA was positively associated with hypertension prevalence and occupational PA was associated with a lower hypertension prevalence. Herein, we report an intramolecular endo -selective Heck reaction of iodomethylsilyl ethers of phenols and alkenols. The reaction leads to the formation of seven- and eight-membered siloxycycles in excellent yields, which could be further converted into the corresponding allylic alcohols upon oxidation. Thus, this method could be used for the selective ( Z )-hydroxymethylation of o -hydroxystyrenes and alkenols. Rapid scan EPR experiments and DFT calculations suggest a concerted β -hydrogen elimination event to take place in the triplet state.

Background: This study aimed to determine the association between parental absence during childhood and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adulthood among middle-aged adults in rural Khanh Hoa province, Vietnam. Given that broader literature on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) suggests a strong positive association between ACEs and cardiometabolic risk or diseases, we hypothesized that parental absence during childhood, which is a major component of ACEs, is more likely to cause MetS in adulthood., Methods: Data were obtained from the baseline survey of the Khanh Hoa Cardiovascular Study, in which 3000 residents aged between 40 to 60 years participated. MetS was assessed using the modified Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. It was considered parental absence if the participants had experienced parental absence due to death, divorce, or out-migration before three or between three to 15 years. We used multiple logistic regression analyses to examine the association between parental absence during childhood and metabolic syndrome during adulthood., Results: There was no significant association between parental absence and MetS; adjusted odds ratio [AOR] was 0.97 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.76-1.22) for those who experienced parental absence between three to 15 years and the corresponding figure for those who experienced it before three years was 0.93 (95% CI = 0.72-1.20). No significant associations were observed when these were examined for the causes of parental absence., Conclusion: This study did not support our hypothesis of an association between parental absence during childhood and metabolic syndrome during adulthood. Background: Several studies have associated fast eating speed with the risk of general obesity, but there are inadequate data on the association between eating speed and abdominal adiposity which may pose a higher threat to health than general obesity. The present study aimed to investigate the association between eating speed and abdominal obesity in a Vietnamese population., Methods: Between June 2019 and June 2020, the baseline survey of an ongoing prospective cohort study on the determinants of cardiovascular disease in Vietnamese adults was conducted. A total of 3,000 people aged 40-60 years old (1,160 men and 1,840 women) were recruited from eight communes in the rural district of Cam Lam, Khanh Hoa province, in Central Vietnam. Self-reported eating speed was assessed on a 5-point Likert scale, and responses were collapsed into the following three categories: slow, normal, and fast. Abdominal obesity was defined as a waist-to-height ratio of ≥ 0.5. Poisson regression with a robust variance estimator was used to assess the association between eating speed and abdominal obesity., Results: Compared with slow eating speed, the adjusted prevalence ratio (95% confidence interval) for abdominal obesity was 1.14 (1.05, 1.25)1.14 (1.05, 1.25) for normal eating speed and 1.30 (1.19, 1.41) for fast eating speed (P for trend < 0.001)., Conclusion: A faster eating speed was associated with a higher prevalence of abdominal obesity in a middle-aged population in rural Vietnam., (© 2023. Objectives: While adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been shown to be associated with adulthood obesity, less is known about their association with underweight. We examined the associations between parental absence (i.e., a major component of ACEs) and both underweight and excess weight among middle-aged rural community dwellers in Vietnam, where experiences of parental absence was not uncommon during and after the Vietnam War (1955-1975)., Methods: Data came from 3000 middle-aged adults who participated in the baseline survey of Khánh Hòa Cardiovascular Study. Parental absence was defined as parental absence due to death, divorce, or out-migration. Using information on the timing of such events, we categorized participants into those who experienced parental absence before the age of 3, between the ages of 3 and 15, and those without such experiences. BMI was calculated based on measured height and weight (kg/m 2 ) and categorized into three groups: underweight <18.5; normal 18.5-24.9; excess weight ≥ 25. Multinomial logistic regression was then used to investigate the association between parental absence and adult weight status., Results: Parental absence that occurred before the age of 3 was marginally significantly associated with underweight (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 1.44, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.95, 2.20) but not with overweight/obesity. Parental divorce was associated with overweight/obesity (RRR = 2.48, 95% CI 1.28, 4.81), but not parental absence due to migratory work., Conclusions: While previous studies in Western settings focused almost exclusively on the risk of obesity in relation to exposure to ACEs, our findings point to the potential importance of considering the risk of underweight in low- and middle-income countries., (© 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Introduction: This study aimed to determine latent profiles from the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire Short Form-6 (PIUQ-SF-6) score of Vietnamese youths and adolescents, which supports the diagnosis of problematic internet use among a large sample size. Moreover, it also explored factors that affect each latent profile of the PIUQ-SF-6 score among participants., Methods: A sample of 1477 Vietnamese people, aged 14 to 24, across five provinces participated in the study. Multinomial logistic regression determined factors related to the levels of the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire Short Form-6 (PIUQ-SF-6) after using latent profile analysis., Results: Participants were divided into three profiles, including those at low, moderate, and high risk of internet addiction. The high-risk latent profile was obtained for 23.1% of adolescents, and the remaining percentages were, respectively, 40.2% and 36.7% of adolescents belonging to the moderate and low-risk groups. Moreover, factors including age, living alone, high Kessler psychological distress scale, excessive time on the internet, living in central cities, and high neighborhood disorder scores were found to be related to moderate- and high-risk internet addiction profiles., Conclusions: Factors analyzed according to individual and social characteristics further explore the reasons underlying increasing internet addiction among Vietnamese youths and inform early interventions.

Introduction: The purpose of this study is to identify the health status and healthcare utilization factors associated with middle-aged women in the rapid urbanization context of Vietnam., Methods: A cross-sectional study with a systematic random sampling technique was conducted in Hung Yen city. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 362 middle-aged women. The collected data included socioeconomic characteristics, health issues, health service utilization, and social support for women in both urban and rural areas. Multivariate regression models were used to determine factors associated with health service utilization and the number of inpatient/outpatient visits., Results: Among 362 participants, the main chronic diseases were diabetes (12.8%), cardiovascular diseases (11.3%), and migraines (9.5%). The proportion of using inpatient and outpatient services among middle-aged women was relatively high (35.8 and 61%, respectively). Women having more support from family and friends were less likely to seek healthcare. Living in rural areas significantly increased the number of inpatient treatments. Regarding health service utilization, the percentage of people using outpatient treatment services accounted for 61.0%, while using inpatient treatment services was reported as 35.8%. The average number of outpatient and inpatient visits per participant were 1.3 and 0.9, respectively., Conclusion: This study revealed a relatively high rate of using healthcare services among women at midlife in a rapidly industrializing city in Vietnam. Screening programs should be implemented for early detection and treatment of chronic diseases in middle-aged women, especially for diabetes. Communication strategies should be adapted to raise awareness of rural women about regular health checkups, and counseling services of healthcare providers should be strongly reinforced. Glinus oppositifolius is an endemic herbaceous plant found in tropical Asian countries and is native in Vietnam. It is used in traditional folk medicine because of its flavor and antiseptic and laxative effects. In the current research, the effects of Tox-off, Biovip, and the purified compounds isolated from G. oppositifolius in the previous study were evaluated on the activation of adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACC) in C2C12 myoblasts. In addition, the most potent active compounds, traphanoside-GO1 (TRA-GO1) and TRA-GO5 have validated the reduction of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP)-1c in HepG2 cells. We found that Tox-off and Biovip significantly increased the phosphorylation of AMPK and ACC in C2C12 myoblasts. Furthermore, TRA-GO1 and TRA-GO5 significantly increased the AMPK activation and phosphorylation of its downstream substrate ACC in a concentration-dependent way compared to the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) control. Besides, the protein level of FAS and SREBP-1c decreased by TRA-GO1 and TRA-GO5 in a concentration-dependent manner. Taken together, our results showed that the increased AMPK and ACC phosphorylation by active components of G. oppositifolius may activate the AMPK signaling pathways, which are useful for the anti-obesity and its related metabolic disorders.

In 2019, a community-based, cross-sectional carriage survey and a seroprevalence survey of 1,216 persons 1-55 years of age were conducted in rural Vietnam to investigate the mechanism of diphtheria outbreaks. Seroprevalence was further compared with that of an urban area that had no cases reported for the past decade. Carriage prevalence was 1.4%. The highest prevalence, 4.5%, was observed for children 1-5 years of age. Twenty-seven asymptomatic Coerynebacterium diphtheriae carriers were identified; 9 carriers had tox gene-bearing strains, and 3 had nontoxigenic tox gene-bearing strains. Child malnutrition was associated with low levels of diphtheria toxoid IgG, which might have subsequently increased child carriage prevalence. Different immunity patterns in the 2 populations suggested that the low immunity among children caused by low vaccination coverage increased transmission, resulting in symptomatic infections at school-going age, when vaccine-induced immunity waned most. A school-entry booster dose and improved infant vaccination coverage are recommended to control transmissions.

Introduction: Proponents of the direct anterior approach (DAA) for THA claim patients recover faster compared to primary THA through the posterior approach (PA). Blood loss and transfusion have substantially declined with the use of tranexamic acid (TXA). However, it is still controversial if hemoglobin drops and transfusion rates are affected by the surgical approach when TXA is routinely used., Materials and Methods: 2418 patients undergoing DAA THA were matched 1:1 with patients undergoing PA THA according to preoperative hemoglobin (± 1 g/dl), age (± 5 years), sex, BMI (± 5 kg/m 2 ) and year of surgery (± 2 years). All patients received perioperative TXA. None of the patients donated autologous blood. Hemoglobin levels, drain placement and output, blood transfusion rates and volume as well as length of stay were recorded., Results: A closed suction drain was used in 121 (5.0%) DAA and in 135 (5.6%) PA THAs (p = 0.369). Mean drain output was higher in the DAA compared to the PA group (134 ml (0-520 ml) versus 92.3 ml (0-600 ml), p = 0.004). There was no difference in hemoglobin drop [2.6 g/dl versus 2.6 g/dl (p = 0.143)] and transfusion rate [n = 31 (1.3%) versus n = 29 (1.2%), p = 0.793)] between DAA and PA THA. Mean transfusion amounts were 421.8 ml (250-1120.8 ml) in the DAA and 353.9 ml (250-560 ml) in the PA group (p = 0.801). The length of stay was shorter in the DAA group with a mean 1.6 days versus 2.1 days in the PA group (p ≤ 0.001)., Conclusion: In this large matched cohort study, there was no difference in the perioperative hemoglobin drop, the transfusion rate and the transfusion amount between DAA and PA THA., (© 2021. Background: Delayed childbearing has become a concern among policymakers across the world. In Vietnam, population policies have been adjusted to cope with this issue. In 2020, Decision 588/QD-TTg was ratified to encourage people to marry and give birth before the age of 30. This study reviewed recent changes in Vietnam's population policies and assessed the intention of giving birth before 30 in young Vietnamese to provide insights into the potential effectiveness of the policy changes among young people. Methods: This study combined two approaches: a desk review and a survey of a group of youths. An online cross-sectional study was conducted on 116 respondents aged 16 to 30 in Vietnam from June to July 2020. The intention of childbearing before 30 and the importance and responsiveness of different social-environmental factors were asked using a structured questionnaire. We used multivariate logistic regression to identify associated factors of such intention. Results: The incentives set out by the Vietnamese government shared similarities with those of other countries. The plan of childbearing before the age of 30 among young adults in Vietnam was demonstrated to correlate with age, socioeconomic and biological characteristics, resources of the local health systems, as well as a clean and safe living environment. Conclusion: This study highlighted the recent crucial shift in Vietnam's population policy. However, the quantitative analysis suggested that measures relating to environmental factors should be incorporated under this policy, implying that further interventions need to be taken into account to cope with delayed childbearing.

Background: Vietnam introduced a 3-dose hepatitis B (HBV) immunization program comprising 1 dose immediately after birth and 2 or 3 in infancy in the past 20 years, but the impact of the vaccine has not been systematically evaluated. Thus, we conducted this survey aiming to estimate the age-specific chronic HBV prevalence in the general population and to evaluate HBV immunization effectiveness., Methods: Population-based, four-stage cluster sampling was used in the South Central Coast region of Vietnam. The point-of-care Determine rapid test was used to assess hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positivity., Results: A total of 2,075 samples were included in the study. HBsAg prevalence was significantly higher among adults aged 20-39 years than in the population aged 1-19 years (8.0% [95% confidence interval 5.0-12.0] vs. 2.0% [95% confidence interval 1.0-6.0], p<0.01). HBsAg prevalence decreased after implementation of the 3-dose vaccination schedule during infancy from 1997 to 2002, whereas the change in prevalence after implementation of the birth dosing was not significant. A slight increase in HBsAg prevalence was observed for the cohort born in 2011, 2012, and 2013, when there was a vaccine shortage and media reports of immunization resistance., Conclusions: This is the first population-based assessment of the introduction of the HBV vaccine in Vietnam performed by estimating the HBsAg prevalence across a wide range of ages. Objectives: There has been comparatively little research on the association between social capital and depressive symptoms in low- and middle-income countries. To address this deficit this study examined the association among middle-aged adults in rural Vietnam., Design: A cross-sectional study., Setting: Data came from the baseline survey of the Khánh Hòa Cardiovascular Study, which is an ongoing prospective cohort study aiming to elucidate the determinants of cardiovascular diseases., Participants: A total of 3000 people aged 40-60 years old residing in rural communes in Khánh Hòa province, Vietnam., Exposure of Interest: Cognitive social capital (ie, low, middle and high) and structural social capital (in terms of social participation; yes or no) were assessed via a questionnaire., Primary Outcome Measure: Depressive symptoms were assessed with the 11-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale., Results: A robust Poisson regression model revealed that adults in the highest versus lowest cognitive social capital tertile had a 61% lower prevalence of depressive symptoms (prevalence ratio (PR)=0.39, 95% CI=0.31 to 0.49). Objectives: This study aimed to determine the agreement between a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and a dried blood spot (DBS)-based electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) of hepatitis B surface antigen and to compare the costs of conducting serosurveys using RDTs and DBS in a field setting., Methods: A serosurvey was conducted in the South Central Coast region of Vietnam in May 2019. Participants aged 1-39 years were recruited using a four-stage random sampling method and tested for hepatitis B surface antigen using an RDT kit (Alere Determine) and a DBS-based ECLIA. The agreement between the RDT and the DBS-based ECLIA was assessed using cross-tabulation and Cohen kappa. Cost data were categorized by input (personnel, transportation, field consumables, laboratory consumables, and capital item/overhead) and survey phase (survey preparation, data/biospecimen collection, laboratory testing, and coordination)., Results: A total of 2072 participants were analyzed. There was a 99% agreement between the RDT and the DBS-based ECLIA results, with a Cohen kappa of 0.9. The estimated cost of conducting a serosurvey by DBS was UD $75,291, whereas RDT was $53,182., Conclusion: RDTs and DBS-based ECLIA provide test results with high agreements. Objectives: This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the treatment outcomes of patients treated with Group cognitive behavioural therapy (GCBT) or group psychoeducation (GPE) as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy. Methods: Systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CENTRAL from inception till 1 March 2022 was conducted. Randomized-controlled-trials (RCTs) comparing GCBT/GPE with controls (treatment-as-usual/individualized therapy) in adults with bipolar disorder were eligible. The outcomes were relapse rates of any depressive or manic episodes and control of depressive and manic symptoms post-intervention. Overall odds-ratio was used to evaluate the relapse rates. Standard Mean Differences were pooled using a random-effects model for the control of depressive and manic symptoms. Results: 25 articles were assessed full-text independently by two members, and 11 studies were included in this meta-analysis. 601 and 590 participants were randomized into group-therapy (GCBT/GPE) and control, respectively. GPE significantly reduces relapse rates at post-intervention with Odds ratio of 0.43 (95% CI = 0.28-to-0.62, p < 0.0001) (I² = 41%) compared to control, however, no significant results were found for GPE on control of depressive or manic symptoms. No significant results were found for GCBT in all outcomes. Conclusion: This meta-analysis provides some evidence that GPE could be an efficacious treatment as an adjunct to treatment-as-usual in reducing the relapse rates of patients with bipolar disorder.

Preparedness and responses to infectious disease epidemics and pandemics require the understanding of communities' and multisectoral systems' characteristics with regards to diseases transmission and population's vulnerabilities. This study aimed to summarize measurement profiles of existing risk assessment toolkits to inform COVID-19 control at global and national levels. An online search in different databases and online sources was performed to identify all epidemic risk and vulnerability assessment instruments. Medline/PubMed, Web of Science databases, and websites of public health organizations were used for the searching process. Of 14 toolkits, levels of setting were mostly at the global or nation level. Components such as Governance and Legislation, Financing, Health Service Provision, and Human Resources are key domains in almost all toolkits. Some important issues for disease detection and surveillance, such as laboratory or capacity of the community for disease control, were not adequately addressed in several toolkits. Limited studies were found that validated the toolkits. Only five toolkits were used in COVID-19 studies. This study provides a summary of risk assessment toolkits to inform epidemic responses. The strong interaction between charge and lattice vibration gives rise to a polaron, which has a profound effect on optical and transport properties of matters. In magnetic materials, polarons are involved in spin dependent transport, which can be potentially tailored for spintronic and opto-spintronic device applications. Here, we identify the signature of ultrafast formation of polaronic states in CrBr 3 . The polaronic states are long-lived, having a lifetime on the time scale of nanoseconds to microseconds, which coincides with the emission lifetime of ∼4.3 μs. Transition of the polaronic states is strongly screened by the phonon, generating a redshift of the transition energy ∼0.2 eV. Moreover, energy-dependent localization of polaronic states is discovered followed by transport/annihilation properties. These results shed light on the nature of the polarons and their formation and transport dynamics in layered magnetic materials, which paves the way for the rational design of two-dimensional magnetic devices.

Introduction: This study aimed to explore the mental wellbeing profiles and their related factors among urban young adults in Vietnam., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Hanoi, which is the capital of Vietnam. There were 356 Vietnamese who completed the Mental Health Inventory-5 (MHI-5) questionnaire. The Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was used to identify the subgroups of mental wellbeing through five items of the MHI-5 scale as the continuous variable. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine factors related to subgroups., Results: Three classes represented three levels of MHI-5 score, which included "Poor mental health," "Fair mental health," and "Good mental health," were, respectively, 14.3, 46.6, and 39.0%. Compared to a low household economy, participants with an average household economy had 2.11 and 4.79 times higher odds of being in a good mental health class relative to fair and poor mental health classes. Respondents with more than two acute symptoms had 3.85 times higher odds of being in a good mental health class relative to a poor mental health class, as compared to those without acute symptoms. Regarding the measurement of the Perceived Social Support Scale (MSPSS), people having support from their family had 1.80 and 2.23 times higher odds of being in classes of fair and good mental health relative to the poor mental health class; and participants having friend support also had 1.87 times higher odds of being in a good mental health class compared with the fair mental health class, as the MSPSS score increased by 1 unit. People with Rosenberg's self-esteem scale increased by 1 score, those who had 1.17, 1.26, and 1.47 times higher odds of being in a good compared to fair mental health class, fair compared to poor mental health class, and good compared to poor mental health class, respectively., Conclusion: Our findings were given to promote a new classification method for mental health screening among the general population. Purpose: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is common in young children and is associated with Streptococcus pneumoniae infection. We aimed to determine the impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) introduction on the prevalence of OME and OME associated with vaccine-type (VT) or non-VT., Methods: Population-based cross-sectional surveys were conducted in pre- (2016) and post-PCV periods (2017, 2018, and 2019) at selected communes in Nha Trang, Vietnam. For each survey, we randomly selected 60 children aged 4-11 months and 60 aged 14-23 months from each commune. Nasopharyngeal sample collection and tympanic membrane examination by digital otoscope were performed. S. pneumoniae was detected and serotyped by lytA qPCR and microarray. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using Firth's logistic regression, stratified by age group., Results: Over the four surveys, 2089 children had a bilateral ear examination. Compared to pre-PCV, the prevalence of OME reduced in 2018 (OR 0.51, 95 %CI 0.28-0.93) and in 2019 (OR 0.53, 95 %CI 0.29-0.97) among the <12-month-olds, but no significant reduction among the 12-23-month-olds. The prevalence of OME associated with VT pneumococcus decreased in 2018 and 2019 (2018: OR 0.14, 95 %CI 0.03-0.55; 2019: OR 0.20, 95 %CI 0.05-0.69 in the <12-months-olds, 2018: OR 0.05, 95 %CI 0.00-0.44, 2019: OR 0.41, 95 %CI 0.10-1.61 in the 12-23-months-olds). Background: While parental absence during childhood has been linked to depression/depressive symptoms in adulthood, no research has been conducted on this association in Vietnam, where many children were separated from their parents during and after the Vietnam War (1955-1975). We examined the association between parental absence in childhood and depressive symptoms among rural community dwellers in Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam., Methods: Data came from 3000 individuals aged 40-60 years old who participated in the baseline survey of the Khanh Hoa Cardiovascular Study. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the 11-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Self-reported information on parental absence due to death, divorce, or outmigration to other locations before the age of 15 was also obtained. A Poisson regression analysis with a robust variance estimator was used to examine associations., Results: Experiencing parental absence at 3 - < 15 years old and before 3 years old was associated with a 1.21 times (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02-1.43) and 1.41 times (95% CI = 1.15-1.73) higher prevalence of depressive symptoms, respectively (p trend <0.001). When examining the associations by the different reasons for the parental absence, the strongest association was found for parental absence due to outmigration to other locations., Limitations: We had no information on who respondents lived with after they experienced parental absence. In this work, we systematically examine the electronic features and contact types of van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) combining single-layer boron phosphide (BP) and Janus Ga 2 SSe using first-principles calculations. Owing to the out-of-plane symmetry being broken, the BP/Ga 2 SSe vdWHs are divided into two different stacking patterns, which are BP/SGa 2 Se and BP/SeGa 2 S. Our results demonstrate that these stacking patterns are structurally and mechanically stable. The combination of single-layer BP and Janus Ga 2 SSe gives rise to an enhancement in the Young's modulus compared to the constituent monolayers. Furthermore, at the ground state, the BP/Ga 2 SSe vdWHs possess a type-I (straddling) band alignment, which is desired for next-generation optoelectronic applications. The interlayer separation and electric field are effectively used to tune the electronic features of the BP/Ga 2 SSe vdWH from the type-I to type-II band alignment, and from semiconductor to metal. Peer-to-peer lending (P2P lending) has proliferated in recent years thanks to Fintech and big data advancements. However, P2P lending platforms are not tightly governed by relevant laws yet, as their development speed has far exceeded that of regulations. Therefore, P2P lending operations are still subject to risks. This paper proposes prediction models to mitigate the risks of default and asymmetric information on P2P lending platforms. Specifically, we designed sophisticated procedures to pre-process mass data extracted from Lending Club in 2018 Q3-2019 Q2. After that, three statistical models, namely, Logistic Regression, Bayesian Classifier, and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and five AI models, namely, Decision Tree, Random Forest, LightGBM, Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), were utilized for data analysis. The loan statuses of Lending Club's customers were rationally classified. To evaluate the models, we adopted the confusion matrix series of metrics, AUC-ROC curve, Kolmogorov-Smirnov chart (KS), and Student's t-test. Empirical studies show that LightGBM produces the best performance and is 2.91% more accurate than the other models, resulting in a revenue improvement of nearly USD 24 million for Lending Club. Student's t-test proves that the differences between models are statistically significant.

Purposes: This cross-sectional study assessed the quality of life and related factors of Vietnamese women during perimenopause in terms of vasomotor, psychosocial, physical, and sexual aspects., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study on 400 middle-aged women was conducted in Hung Yen, a delta province in Vietnam. Data about socioeconomic characteristics, daily activity patterns, quality of life in terms of vasomotor, psychosocial, physical, and sexual aspects, and level of social support were collected. Tobit multivariate regression model was used to identify factors related to the quality of life among participants., Results: The symptoms of perimenopause appeared to worsen with the increase of age and the existence of such health issues as migraine and diabetes. Meanwhile, exercises, recreational activities, and social support appeared to alleviate the negative impact of perimenopausal symptoms on women., Conclusions: It is important to address the care needs of women during perimenopausal age, especially their sexual well-being, and development of specific healthcare services and programs focusing on sport, entertainment, and support for women in perimenopause should be facilitated., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Endophytes can generate a cornucopia of marvelous bioactive secondary metabolites useful for mankind but their biodiversity and associations with host plants are still elusive. In this study, we explored the culturable endophytic microorganisms associated with 14 medicinal plants that are of high socio-economic value and/or reportedly endemic to northern Vietnam. Specifically, we isolated the endophytic microorganisms by applying surface sterilization methods and identified them based on morphological and rDNA sequence analyses. Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were used to analyze the correlations between the taxonomic affiliations of the culturable endophytes and the characteristics of their hosts. Most of the culturable endophytes obtained were bacteria (80), and few of those were actinomycetes (15) and fungi (8). Many of them are reported to be endophytes of medicinal plants for the first time. A number of plants (5) are also reported for the first time to contain microbial endophytes, while some plants with powerful pharmaceutical potential harbor unique endophytes. Furthermore, our results reveal a strikingly close relation between the compositions of bacterial and fungal isolates from plants having anti-bacterial activity and those from plants having anti-inflammatory activity, or between the compositions of the microbial endophytic isolates from plants having anti-cancer activity and those from plants having antioxidant activity. Altogether, the results provide new findings which can be inspiring for further in-depth studies to explore and exploit the relationships between medicinal plants and their associated endophytes in northern Vietnam and world-wide., (© 2022. Background: Patient satisfaction, with both process of care and outcome of care, is critical for measuring the quality and value of elective procedures such as arthroplasty. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the correlation between early postoperative satisfaction with the process of care and 2-year satisfaction with the outcome of care after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA)., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from institutional arthroplasty registries. Satisfaction with the outcome of care was measured on a scale of 0-100 by a previously validated questionnaire administered 2 years postoperatively. Patient satisfaction with the process of care was measured by the Press Ganey (PG) inpatient survey, also scored 0-100. We examined the correlation between these 2 measures of satisfaction in patients who underwent primary THA or TKA., Results: In total, 721 TKA patients and 760 THA patients underwent surgery and completed both the PG survey and 2-year satisfaction questionnaire. The mean age was 65.1 years with a mean body mass index of 28.8 and 56% were female. The mean PG survey score for the entire cohort was 95.6. The mean 2-year satisfaction score was 90.3. The Spearman correlation coefficient between the PG survey and the 2-year satisfaction survey was 0.23 for TKA patients (P < .001) and 0.13 for THA patients (P < .001)., Conclusion: We found a weak correlation between the measurement of satisfaction with the process of care surrounding hip and knee arthroplasty using the PG survey and measurement of satisfaction with the outcome of care after arthroplasty using a validated 2-year satisfaction instrument., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc.
