This study examined the association between visual impairment, visual impairment corrected by wearing eyeglasses, academic performance, and mental health among junior high school students in rural China. Visual acuity assessments were conducted on 19,425 junior high school students by trained medical and research professionals to determine the presence of visual impairment. All sample students were surveyed with a questionnaire that asked about individual and family characteristics, eyeglasses ownership, and educational aspirations and included a standardized math test. Students then completed an official Chinese simplified version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) to assess their mental health multidimensionally. Among our sample, 37.2% of them suffered from visual impairment, but only 43.4% of the visually impaired students wore proper eyeglasses. Approximately 9.3% of students were categorized as high risk for mental health problems based on their SDQ score. A significant positive association existed between impaired vision and poorer mental health, and eyeglasses usage was associated with better mental health among visually impaired students. For students with better academic performance, eyeglasses usage associated with better mental health. Eyeglasses usage shows a positive association with higher education aspiration both for students with better and worse academic performance. The significant positive relationship between eyeglasses usage and mental health may guide future interventions and policies designed to improve student mental health by supplying them with eyeglasses. Advancements in laser glass compositions and manufacturing techniques has allowed the development of a new category of high-energy and high-power laser systems which are being used in various applications, such as for fundamental research, material processing and inertial confinement fusion (ICF) technologies research. A ceramic laser is a remarkable revolution in solid state lasers. It exhibits crystalline properties, high yields, better thermal conductivity, a uniformly broadened emission cross-section, and a higher mechanical constant. Polycrystalline ceramic lasers combine the properties of glasses and crystals, which offer the unique advantages of high thermal stability, excellent optical transparency, and the ability to incorporate active laser ions homogeneously. They are less expensive and have a similar fabrication process to glass lasers. Recent developments in these classes of lasers have led to improvements in their efficiency, beam quality, and wavelength versatility, making them suitable for a broad range of applications, such as scientific research requiring ultra-fast laser pulses, medical procedures like laser surgery and high-precision cutting and welding in industrial manufacturing. The future of ceramic lasers looks promising, with ongoing research focused on enhancing their performance, developing new doping materials and expanding their functional wavelengths. The ongoing progress in high-power ceramic lasers is continuously expanding the limits of laser technology, therefore allowing the development of more powerful and efficient systems for a wide range of advanced and complex applications. We are experiencing a planetary tipping point with global warming, environmental degradation, and losses in biodiversity. The burdens of these changes fall disproportionately on poor and marginalized populations. Physical activity promotion strategies need to be aligned with climate action commitments, incorporating the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change scenarios in physical activity action plans. The promotion strategies must consider equity a core value and promote physical activity to the most vulnerable populations so that they are protected from the ill-health impacts of a changing climate. Secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) is an important cationic protein involved in innate airway immunityandhighlyexpressed inmucosal secretions, shownto target and inhibit neutrophil elastase (NE), cathepsinGand trypsinactivitytolimit proteolytic activity. Inaddition tothe potent anti-protease activity, SLPIhas beendemonstratedto exert a direct anti-inflammatory effect, which is mediated via increased inhibition and competitive binding of NF-kB, regulating immune responses through limiting transcription of pro-inflammatory gene targets. In muco-obstructive lung disorders, suchasChronicObstructivePulmonaryDisease(COPD)andCysticFibrosis (CF), there is an observed elevation in airway SLPI protein concentrations as a result of increased lung inflammation and disease progression. However, studies have identified COPD patients presenting with diminished SLPI concentrations. Furthermore, there is a decrease in SLPI concentrations through cleavage and subsequent inactivation by NE degradation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa infected people with CF (pwCF). These observations suggest reduced SLPI protein levels may contribute to the compromising of airway immunity indicating a potential role of decreased SLPI levels in the pathogenesis of muco-obstructive lung disease. The Beta Epithelial Na+ Channel transgenic (ENaC-Tg) mousemodel phenotype exhibits characteristics which replicate the pathological features observed in conditions such as COPD and CF, including mucus accumulation, alterations in airway morphology and increased pulmonary inflammation. To evaluate the effect of SLPI in muco-obstructive pulmonary disease, ENaC-Tg mice were crossed with SLPI knock-out (SLPI-/-) mice, generating a ENaC-Tg/SLPI-/- colony to further investigate the role of SLPI in chronic lung disease and determine the effect of its ablation on disease pathogenesis. Aim: To review the international evidence base on interventions to support the mental health of family carers of children with brain injuries in low and middle income countries (LMIC). Methods: Searches were conducted with five electronic databases (Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL) using search terms related to "family carers", "brain injury", "children" and "low and middle income countries". Studies were independently screened using predetermined eligibility criteria by two authors. Data were extracted from included studies using standardised data extraction and quality appraisal tools. These data were then subjected to narrative synthesis. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to govern the review process. Findings: One study met our inclusion criteria and described an acquired brain injury called nodding syndrome which occurs in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study was conducted in Ghana and provided group-based psychotherapy to carers and their children. As such we found no study which sought to solely support the mental health of family carers. Conclusions: There has been a lack of focus in the literature on the mental health of family carers of children with brain injuries in LMIC. Considering the vital importance of caregivers in supporting their children it is imperative that service providers and researchers devise programmes to better meet their needs. Background: Despite growing international attention, there remains an urgent need to develop mental health services within low and middle income countries. The Khmer Rouge period in Cambodia saw the destruction of all health services infrastructure in the 1970s. Consequently, Cambodia has struggled to rebuild both its economy and healthcare system, with the number of qualified mental health clinicians remaining disproportionately low. Resultantly, there is a pressing need to develop low-cost community based alternatives of mental healthcare. Methods: Using a mixed methods design, researchers developed an 8-week peer-led intervention, known as a Friendship Group, for adults with physical disabilities using both face-to-face and online delivery methods. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test was used to assess changes in pre-post survey scores and qualitative data was collected in form of five focus groups post intervention. Results: 41 participants were allocated across four Friendship groups -- two were online and two face-to-face. Attrition rate was 22% post-intervention (n=32). ITT analyses showed a statistically significant decrease in psychological distress scores [Z =-3.808, p < .001] from pre [Mdn = 20, IQR = 16.5-25.5] to post [Mdn = 16, IQR = 14-18.5] intervention. A Wilcoxon signed-ranks test also showed a statistically significant decrease in PTSD scores [Z = -2.239, p < .025] from pre [Mdn=4, IQR=3-5] to post [Mdn = 3, IQR= 2.75-4] intervention. There was also a statistically significant decrease in worry scores [Z =-3.904, p < .001] from pre [Mdn=5, IQR=3.5-6.5] to post [Mdn = 3, IQR = 3-4] intervention. There were no significant group differences between the face to face and online groups. A number of interconnected themes emerged from focus group data (n=5), these included the mental health benefits of Friendship Groups as conceptualised through knowledge acquisition, skill development and peer support. Conclusions: The Friendship group intervention delivered in both online and face-to-face formats appears feasible and acceptable within the Cambodian context. Background The arteriovenous access stage (AVAS) classification provides evaluation of upper extremity vessels for vascular access (VA) suitability. It divides patients into classes within three main groups: suitable for native fistula (AVAS1) or prosthetic graft (AVAS2), and patients not suitable for conventional native or prosthetic VA (AVAS3). We validated this system on a prospective dataset. Methods A prospective, international observational study (NCT04796558) involved 11 centres from 8 countries. Patient recruitment was from March 2021 to January 2024. Demographic data, risk factors, vessels parameters, VA types, AVAS class and early VA failure were collected. Percentage agreement was used to assess predictive ability of AVAS (comparison of AVAS and created VA) and consistency of AVAS assessment between evaluators. Pearson's Chi-squared test was used for comparison of early failure rate of conventional (predicted by AVAS) and unconventional (not predicted by AVAS) VA. Results From 1034 enrolled patients, 935 had arteriovenous fistula or graft, 99 patients did not undergo VA creation due opting for alternative renal replacement therapies, experiencing health complications, death or non-compliance. AVAS1 had 91.2%, AVAS2 7.2% and AVAS3 1.6% of patients. Agreement between evaluators was 89%. The most frequently created VAs were radial-cephalic (46%) and brachial-cephalic (27%) fistulae. The accuracy of AVAS versus created access was 79%. In comparison, VA predicted by clinicians versus created access was 62.1%. Inaccuracy of AVAS prediction was more common with higher AVAS classes, and the most common reason for inaccuracy was creation of distal VA despite less favourable anatomy (17%). Patients with unconventional VA had higher early failure rate than patients with conventional VA (20% vs 9.3%, respectively, P  = .002) Conclusion AVAS is effective in predicting VA creation, but overall accuracy is reduced at higher AVAS classes when the complexity of decision-making increases and proximal vessels require preservation. This editorial discusses the increasing spread of foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) due to the global livestock and poultry industry, food processing industry, and international trade. It highlights the challenges posed by pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Clostridium, and Escherichia coli, which contaminate various types of foods and contribute to the burden of AMR and foodborne diseases. The editorial emphasizes the need for more research and understanding of these pathogens, their mechanisms of resistance and virulence, and their dissemination, using multi-omics approaches. Little is known either about either physical activity patterns, or other lifestyle-related prevention measures in heart transplantation (HTx) recipients. The history of HTx started more than 50 years ago but there are still no guidelines or position papers highlighting the features of prevention and rehabilitation after HTx. The aims of this scientific statement are (i) to explain the importance of prevention and rehabilitation after HTx, and (ii) to promote the factors (modifiable/non-modifiable) that should be addressed after HTx to improve patients' physical capacity, quality of life and survival. All HTx team members have their role to play in the care of these patients and multidisciplinary prevention and rehabilitation programmes designed for transplant recipients. HTx recipients are clearly not healthy disease-free subjects yet they also significantly differ from heart failure patients or those who are supported with mechanical circulatory support. Therefore, prevention and rehabilitation after HTx both need to be specifically tailored to this patient population and be multidisciplinary in nature. Prevention and rehabilitation programmes should be initiated early after HTx and continued during the entire post-transplant journey. Introduction: Potatoes are one of the world's most important agricultural crops, with potential for making a major contribution to global food security. This study shows how a biostimulant derived from a plant extract can improve potato crop yield and global food supply. Successful potato production currently requires significant levels of inputs including fertiliser, pesticides and irrigation, however non-microbial plant biostimulants or mixtures of biostimulants with synergistic actions, have the capacity to reduce inputs and improve the sustainability of intensive agriculture. Methods: A complex biostimulant containing a number of flavonoids including protocatechuic acid, quercetin, chlorogenic acid, coumaroyl quinic acid and gentistic acid was tested against three potato varieties for its efficacy in improving plant growth characteristics and tuber production in controlled and field environments. Results: In containers, complex biostimulant treatment enhanced photosynthetic ability, with elevated levels of chlorophyll, higher specific leaf areas and significantly larger leaf assimilation areas. Treatment also significantly increased tuber yield by an average of 33% in tuber weight across three potato varieties and shifted tuber production toward larger sized tubers. The biostimulant derived from flavonoids was also assessed in 6 commercial potato crops and consistently increased total yield (average 5.2%) and marketable yield, representing an increase in margins of UK£700 per hectare across the 6 crops. Similar increases in yield were seen when comparing chitted and unchitted seed potatoes and both types of seed responded positively to biostimulant application. Biostimulant treatment had no significant effects on tuber specific gravity, dry matter percentage and starch content, except at one location where these quality characteristics were higher in the control plants. Conclusion: The flavonoid based complex biostimulant produced significant effects on potato yield and quality in both container experiments and in field trials indicating its potential for contributing to sustainable potato production. Introduction: The benefits of physical activity for mental health and well-being and the associations between parental mental health and children's mental health have been well established. These important issues tend to be examined separately however, and there is limited research on the associations between parent and child physical activity and mental health when all considered together. While family focused practice is recommended to provide support for parents who have mental health problems and their families and includes various components (such as psychoeducation, support for mental health and parenting), promoting physical activity for parents and children is not usually a core component of these interventions. Methods: The Northern Ireland Youth Wellbeing Survey aimed to provide estimates of the prevalence of mental health problems among children and young people. The survey also included questions about parental physical activity, parental mental health, and children's physical activity (for those aged 11-19 years). The main aim of the analysis reported in this article was to explore possible bivariate associations between parent and child physical activity and mental health and also explore these associations when all considered together. Participants were included in the analysis where there were completed interviews for the young person and one of their parents, and both young person and parent provided responses in relation to questions on weekly physical activity (n = 882). Results: The findings highlight the positive associations between parental physical activity and parental mental health, and between children's physical activity and children's mental health. They also explore some of the more complex interactions between these four variables, which suggest that gender may also be an important consideration. There were significant associations between father's physical activity and son's mental health, and son's physical activity and father's mental health. Discussions: These findings suggest that including support for parental physical activity and children's physical activity should be a routine component of family focused mental health interventions. It is important to acknowledge that there may be additional barriers to engaging in physical activity for families where a parent is experiencing mental health problems, and these should also be explored and addressed. Recently, the remarkable physical characteristics of AA3′B4O12 quadruple perovskite oxides, including their enormous magnetoresistance, gigantic dielectric constants, charge/orbital/magnetic ordering, spin-induced ferroelectricity, and ferrimagnetic half-metallicity, have attracted significant attention. Nowadays, a wide variety of quadruple perovskite oxides have been prepared at high temperature and pressure as high as 10 GPa. Nevertheless, the large-scalebulk synthesis of quadruple perovskite oxides at ambient pressure is crucial for practical use. In this direction, quadruple perovskite oxides have experienced rapid growth in the last few years. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review of the recent progress on quadruple perovskite oxides, methodically summarizing their synthetic procedures and structural characterization, elucidating their intriguing physical properties, and discussing their potential applications across diverse technological and scientific domains. Furthermore, we also present a summary of theoretical studies on the structural and electrical properties of quadruple perovskite oxides. Finally, we conclude by giving some perspectives on quadruple perovskite oxides.
