MEDICAL tourism , *ANALYTIC hierarchy process , *TOURIST attractions , *STRENGTH of materials ,DEVELOPING countries - Abstract
The relevance of health tourism for destinations has been highlighted more and more in recent years due to the rise in health-related travel and the resulting large revenue it generates, particularly for developing nations. This study focuses on the prioritization of the criteria set out in the 2021 - 2030 Action Plan of Kayseri, which has an important potential to become a health tourism destination due to its infrastructure and location and tries to carry out marketing activities in this direction, with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, one of the multi-criteria decision-making methods, in order to determine the current situation in terms of health tourism. The aim of the research is to determine the factors that are important in the process of developing policies regarding Kayseri's health tourism in order to make an accurate and effective plan as well as to develop strategies. In addition, as preliminary research, it is aimed to provide body of knowledge that is expected to have a widespread impact on the relevant literature through the findings obtained in line with the purpose. The investigations have shown that Kayseri's weaknesses with regard to health tourism are the most significant among the primary criteria. In the sub-criteria, it was determined that the criteria of lack of awareness about legislation and tourism in terms of weaknesses and having important promotional materials in terms of strengths were prioritized. On the other hand, it was determined that the criteria of having many honorary promotional ambassadors in terms of opportunities and the criteria of having businesses without health tourism authorization in terms of threats were prioritized in terms of importance. MEDICAL tourism , *TOURISM impact , *ECONOMIC expansion , *TOURISM , *GROSS domestic product , *TOURISM websites , *FOOD tourism - Abstract
Healthcare, which is a semi-public good in many countries, has a significant tourism potential today. Citizens of the country; Due to many reasons such as economic conditions, quality and delivery of health services, they may go to different countries to receive health care instead of their own country. This situation further highlights the macroeconomic dimension of health expenditures made by states and private entrepreneurs. Although tourism means visitors coming to the country for holiday purposes, visitors coming for health purposes are also considered tourists and contribute to the development of the tourism sector. In this study, the general view of health tourism in Turkey is given, primarily by taking into account the revenues obtained from health tourism and the number of visitors entering the country for health tourism purposes. Afterwards, the impact of visitors coming to Türkiye to receive health services between the first quarter of 2002 and the fourth quarter of 2022 (2002Q1-2022Q4) on gross domestic product (growth) was examined. Toda-Yamamoto causality test was used to measure this effect. The findings revealed that there is no causality relationship from health tourism revenues to economic growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MEDICAL tourism , *RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *TOURIST attractions , *TOURISM , *LEAST squares - Abstract
Health tourism is expressed as organized travel outside the local environment in order to protect, improve or renew one's mental and physical health. Especially in recent years, serious problems are experienced in the global production and supply chain due to the COVID-19 epidemic in the world and the Russia-Ukraine war. While these problems are deeply felt in many sectors, especially in underdeveloped and developing countries, the health tourism sector has also been adversely affected by the events. The decrease in international mobility due to travel restrictions and security reasons has led to a decrease in health tourism revenues. Health tourism, where seasonal effects are not experienced, can positively affect economic growth in one of the world's most important health tourism destinations, such as Turkey, through foreign currency inflows. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of health tourism on economic growth, especially in Turkey, which is one of the most important health tourism destinations in the world. In the study using quarterly time series data between 2012Q1-2022Q4, the Fourier Bootstrap ARDL method developed by Yılancı, Bozoklu and Gorus (2020) was used to reveal the existence of a long-term relationship. In addition, Least Squares method (OLS) and Fully Modified Least Squares (FMOLS) methods were applied for parameter coefficient estimations. Our findings, while revealing the existence of a long-term relationship, showed that increases in health tourism income positively affect economic growth. In the light of the findings, it is predicted that the countries that take into account the developments in the field of health tourism and invest in this field will take a significant share from the health tourism revenues among the factors that increase the country's welfare in the future.

The aim of this study is to identify the problems that physicians face with tourists in the context of medical tourism. In order to identify the problems, a qualitative research method was chosen. The research was carried out with physicians who serve health tourists in Istanbul and also own clinics or polyclinics. The reason why Istanbul was chosen is that it is one of the most preferred cities by health tourists. A structured interview form was used as a data collection tool. The data obtained from the face-to-face interviews with the physicians were subjected to descriptive analysis. It was found that the physicians and health tourists experience problems caused by the excessive number of companions, communication with patients and their relatives, delays in appointments, and cultural differences. The Health Free Zone (SASEB) is a new global phenomenon. Declared by the Emir of Dubai in 2002, Dubai Health City has the distinction of being the first Health Free Zone established in the world. In the following years other SASEB projects has been implemented in China, South Korea, Indonesia, and Nigeria. Countries see SASEB as an important tool in achieving their health tourism goals. The Turkish SASEB project, which was brought to the agenda in Turkey in 2010, attracted great attention from the public and remained on the agenda of the health sector for many years. With the change of the Minister and top bureaucrats of the period, the government's interest in the project is decreased. There were local interests and initiatives in some cities such as Izmir, Bursa, Istanbul and Ankara that wanted to continue the project, but they did not succeed. The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is a need for a Health Free Zone in Turkey, and if there is such a need, the content and size of the expected benefit from Turkish SASEB project. Questionnaires and scales developed by the researcher were used in the study. In order to test the validity and reliability of the questionnaire and scales, a pilot study was conducted with 54 people. After the necessary arrangements were made on the questionnaire and scales within the framework of the findings obtained from the pilot study, the main survey studies were carried out between 15 November 2022 and 15 February 2023 with the approval of the Istanbul Gedik University Ethics Committee. The sample group (491 people) has been formed by the stratification method. The dataset is subjected to t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation and regression analyses with SPSS v.23 statistical program. The majority of the respondents (59%) stated that there is a need for SASEB project in Turkey. In the regression analysis, it was concluded that SASEB project will increase the number of health tourists and health tourism revenues in Turkey by 44.8%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT: Health tourism, which is a sub-field of tourism, has an important place in the development of countries and regions. It is the people living in that region who are most affected by the development of health tourism activities in a region. Perceptions and support of local people have important effects on the development and sustainability of health tourism in a destination. It should be ensured that the local people have positive perceptions about the effects of health tourism and support tourism development. In this study, the effect of four factors affecting health tourism on the support of local people to the development of health tourism was investigated. Study data were collected through face-to-face survey application to 392 participants residing in Akyazı. The research model and hypotheses developed in line with the purpose of the study were tested with the structural equation model using AMOS 4 and SPSS 22 package programs. As a result of the test, it was determined that the model had a good fit. It has been determined that the effect of socio-cultural and health-related factors on the total impact of health tourism development is significant. The total impacts, economic and health impact variables were all found to have a significant impact on the local community's support for health tourism development.

Touristic needs are also changing, depending on the increasing elderly population in the world and in Turkey. Considering that the elderly tourist group, which is called the third age tourist group, consists of individuals over the age of 65, it can be said that they shape their travels within the scope of health tourism with quieter and natural areas. As stated in the 2023 tourism vision, diversifying tourism and spreading it over 12 months is one of the issues discussed in depth. Geriatric tourism, which is one of the types of health tourism and health tourism, is one of the important alternatives for the diversification of tourism. In this context, Akyazı district of Sakarya province, located in the Marmara Region, is seen as one of the important settlements with geriatric tourism potential. Akyazi; It is a very convenient destination for geriatric tourism with its hot springs, clean air, plateaus, forests and being close to big cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa and Kocaeli. At this point, the aim of the study is to evaluate the geriatric tourism potential of Akyazı from the perspective of local governments. Within the scope of the study, interviews were conducted with 12 participants from Akyazı local governments using semi-structured interview technique. MEDICAL tourism , *POPULATION aging , *TOURISTS , *STRATEGIC planning - Abstract
In recent years, factors such as an aging population, varying illness burdens, numerous health technological breakthroughs in different regions, and ease of travel between countries have all contributed to the growth of health tourism. Adapting to this development, which promotes countries' economies, is now a must for policymakers in terms of resource allocation and strategic planning. The aim of this study is to evaluate Turkey's health tourism performance using multi-objective optimization (MOORA) based on ratio analysis, a multicriteria decision-making method, and to reveal the current situation to contribute to the development of health tourism. In the study, 6 different indicators are used as performance criteria. The data covers 2009–2019. The MOORA-Ratio method and the MOORA-Reference Point Approach were used together. In the study, it is seen that the health tourism performance has increased gradually over the years. According to the ratio method, the best performance was achieved in 2017, and according to the reference point approach, in 2014. Suggestions were made to increase the performance of health tourism and to reach the targets determined in the strategic plan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MEDICAL tourism , *MULTIPLE criteria decision making , *DECISION making , *SCIENCE databases , *FUZZY logic , *TURKISH language - Abstract
Medical tourism is in an increasing trend depending on many factors. The use of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods in the selection of the optimal situation rationalizes and facilitates the decision process. The aim of the study is to examine the studies in which multi-criteria decision-making techniques are used in medical tourism. Systematic review method is chosen to carry out the research. Articles which are published in English and Turkish languages between 2011-2021, in Web of Science, Scopus and Science Direct databases are reviewed and examined. During the scanning process, 25 articles (out of 4331) are included in the study. Most of them were published in 2020 (28%), conducted in Turkey (36%), and used only one single MCDM method in their processes (72%). In addition, it is observed that most of the articles prefer to use AHP method (60%) and only 7 of the included articles proceed their studies by adopting fuzzy logic (28%). MCDM methods are widely used in medical tourism studies. It is suggested that MCDM methods should be used considering the characteristics of the method and the purpose of the study and integrated into the processes of fuzzy logic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MEDICAL tourism , *SERVICE industries , *TICKET sales , *REPAIR & maintenance services , *ECONOMIC sectors - Abstract
In recent years, most countries have tried to gain international competitiveness in service sectors. It is important to develop in the sector, have a cost advantage, and gain an advantage in the exchange rate and more economic openness. On the other hand, achieving competitiveness in health tourism, an international service trade, allows economic openness. Low cost, high quality, good advertising activities, low ticket prices, and so forth lead to competition in order to increase the export of health care. The high competitiveness of health tourism contributes to economic growth. Conversely, Türkiye's competitive advantages in terms of health tourism have contributed to both the sector and economic growth. In this context, first, the competitiveness of health tourism was analyzed using the export-import ratio index for the period 2003Q1–2019Q4 in Türkiye. The analysis revealed that Türkiye has a competitive advantage in health tourism. Second, the scores of health tourism competitiveness, number of tourists, travel revenues and economic growth were investigated using the vector autoregression method to analyse the effects of the factors on each other. According to the analysis, the impact of a shock in health tourism competitiveness and tourist number on economic growth have lasted for a long time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ACCESSIBLE tourism , *MEDICAL tourism , *RECREATION , *TOURISM , *WELL-being , *TOURISM websites , *INFORMATION needs - Abstract
Health tourism, which is among the alternative tourism types in tourism literature and evaluated as special interest tourism according to some sources, has come to the forefront as an important tourism type in recent years. Health tourism, in general, is a broad market that covers niche types such as thermal tourism, spa and wellness tourism, medical and dental tourism, senior tourism and accessible tourism. Although it is stated that the main purpose of health tourism is to protect and improve health, it is also aimed to meet the entertainment needs of tourists through accommodation, nutrition, rest and certain recreational activities. In particular, recreational activities do not only increase the quality of life of tourists for a short and temporary time, but also support their treatment by positively affecting their emotions. Therefore tourists who plan their travels within the scope of health tourism recently prefer facilities that will offer them different recreational experiences other than health services. Although it has been claimed in some studies that the recreational activities organized during the treatment, beyond the health services, make significant contributions to the wellbeing of the tourists, there are still a few remarkable studies in this area. The aim of this study, which was carried out in order to shed light on the gap in the field, is to evaluate the relationship between recreational activities and health tourism types, whose importance is increasing day by day within the scope of health tourism. For this purpose, first of all, health tourism and recreation are explained conceptually in the study and the relations between the two concepts are examined. In addition, by supporting the relations between health tourism and recreation with examplary cases around the world, a contribution to the recreation literature has been made and new perspectives have been presented to business managers operating in the field of health tourism. Today, it is seen that there is an increase in the elderly population, which is defined as the third age, in developed countries, especially in many countries in the European continent, and all over the world. It is estimated that the elderly population will reach 2 billion in 2050. Understanding the importance of many activities such as spa-wellness and thermal activities, which are important for human health in tourism, increases the interest of people in the third age group to these activities. Aware of this situation, many countries regulate their insurance systems and implement policies that support the participation of the elderly population in tourism. This situation causes the growth of the third age tourism market. This situation creates an important opportunity especially for countries with thermal tourism opportunities. For this reason, in this study, it is aimed to evaluate the potential situation of third age tourism in the world and to evaluate what Turkey should do to benefit from this tourism market in terms of thermal tourism. For this purpose, the statistical data of the tourists participating in thermal tourism to Turkey have been reached and it has been observed that especially from Northern European countries. TOURIST attractions , *HERITAGE tourism , *GEOTHERMAL resources , *WATER supply , *MEDICAL tourism , *TOURISM websites - Abstract
Türkiye, which is geographically located in one of the world's most important geothermal zone, is recognized as one popular thermal tourism destination due to its natural thermal water resources as well as their qualities. Within Türkiye's thermal tourism potential, Erzurum, located on the foothills of Palandöken Mountain in Eastern Anatolia Region, has a significant potential for thermal tourism as well as historical, cultural, and archaeological riches. This study aims to unveil the thermal tourism potential of Erzurum, which has been used as a permanent settlement in the historical process with the advantage of its geographical location and examine the usability of thermal tourism as an alternative tourism type, as well as developing the recommendations that will enable thermal tourism to progress. For this purpose, a conceptual literature review on the subject of thermal tourism was conducted, and previous years' research was thoroughly examined. The study revealed that Erzurum does possess a great number of thermal water resources in both quality and quantity in almost all of its surroundings, particularly in the districts such as Aziziye, Pasinler, and Köprüköy. However, it is unable to utilize this potential effectively and efficiently. In this sense, considering the current situation, some recommendations were developed in order to assess the thermal tourism potential of Erzurum and achieve the desired outcome. The aim of this study is to evaluate the satisfaction and organizational commitment levels of healthcare professionals in private healthcare institutions serving within the scope of medical tourism. In addition, it is to reveal the relationship between satisfaction and organizational commitment levels of healthcare workers and whether those two factors differ according to demographic characteristics. The research population consists of healthcare professionals working in private health institutions that have the Ministry of Health tourism authorization certificate in Kayseri. Accordingly, a questionnaire was applied to 346 healthcare workers working in private health institutions. In the study, "Personal Information Form", "Employee Satisfaction Scale" and "Organizational Commitment Scale" were used as data collection tools. Percentage and frequency distributions, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA test and Pearson correlation analysis were used in the analyzes performed with the SPSS 22 (Statistical Package of Social Sciences) package program used in the analysis of the obtained data. According to the results of the research, it is seen that there is a positive significant relationship between the satisfaction and organizational commitment levels of healthcare workers (r =, 620; p =, 000 <0.05). It has been revealed that there is a positive significant relationship between attendance, emotional and normative commitment, which are sub-dimensions of organizational commitment, and satisfaction levels. It is seen that the average level of satisfaction of the participants (3.24) and the mean organizational commitment level (3.16) are higher than the scale average limit value (2.50). According to other findings, the satisfaction levels of healthcare workers did not differ according to gender and marital status variables, and showed significant differences according to demographic variables such as title, age, education level, working time, monthly income. The organizational commitment levels and sub-dimensions of the healthcare professionals did not differ according to the gender variable, and showed significant differences according to demographic variables such as marital status, title, age, education level, working time, monthly income.
