Objective: This prospective study aimed to fill the current knowledge gap in the literature by identifying the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with carotid stenosis who undergo carotid arterial stenting. Methods: A cohort of 49 patients who underwent carotid artery stenting (CAS) from January 2021 to August 2022 was analyzed. Demographic information and data related to the existence of adverse neurological events were collected. Results: Stent placement achieved a 93.8% success rate when measured using the NASCET measurement criteria. Post-CAS neuroimaging revealed multifocal diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) restriction in 8.16% of patients, hypointensity on susceptibility-weighted imaging in 8.16%, and focal DWI restriction in 32.65%, with no clinically significant deficits observed. A statistically significant association (p = 0.015) between severe stenosis and multifocal neuroimaging events was observed. Conclusions: Neurological complications observed by neuroimaging after CAS were not an indicator of an increased risk of clinically important adverse events at follow-up. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artrose ,Cativeiro ,Felídeos ,Ortopedia ,Radiologia ,Science ,Social Sciences - Abstract

After the X-rays discovery, there was a need to create radiopaque substances that would allow anatomical structures to be highlighted. Contrast media emerged to radiographically draw tubular or hollow structures such as the urinary excretory system. The purpose of this research is to describe the initial historical evolution of the contrast use in the urinary system as a tribute to the hundred years of its first feasible use in humans. For this, a historical research was carried out, theoretical and empirical methods were used that allowed the analysis of the historical trajectory of the development of iodinated contrast in urological studies. It was found that the initiators were Eduard Hascheck and Otto Lindenthal. Other scientists used contrast media in the urinary system with little value. In 1919, Carlos Heuser described its use in cystographies and ureterographies, but this was not taken into account. Berberich and Hirsch, in 1923, are leaders in performing intravenous pyelography without any accident. Several compounds were studied up to Uroselectan, a substance best adapted to urography. It is concluded that 1923 was taken as the beginning of contrasting studies on the urinary system; however, there were researches prior to it. It was not until 1930 that Uroselectan emerged, giving rise to the beginning of iodine for diagnostic purposes.

The fabella is a bony anatomical variable, which in humans is located posterior to the lateral condyle of the femur, in the tendinous portion of the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle. Its prevalence rate has been reported in different populations, ranging from 3% to 86%. This study aimed to create an index that classifies the fabella according to its dimensions, determine the prevalence of the fabella in the Colombian population, and identify possible differences according to the fabella index (FI), sex, age, laterality, and degree of fabellar degeneration. A retrospective study used 93 lateral knee radiographs belonging to Colombian individuals. A fabella index was established to classify fabellae into longifabellar, medifabellar, and equifabellar, and radiological classification was used to identify the degree of fabellar degeneration (DFD). The prevalence of fabella was 36.30 %, and this variant was associated with the individual’s sex, with male subjects having 2.66 times the probability of presenting fabella. A higher prevalence of medifabellar fabellae (57.60 %) was observed, followed by longifabellar (24.20 %) and equifabellar (18.20 %). There was a positive and moderate correlation between the DFD and age. We consider that larger fabellae can cause entrapment of the common fibular nerve, compression of the popliteal artery, and tear of the medial meniscus, so the FI becomes relevant in clinical practice, providing information on the type of fabella and its associated pathological manifestations. This study introduces a novel fabella index and investigates the frequency of fabella in the Colombian population. The findings of this study will serve as a reference for future research and contribute to the field of knee orthopedics and surgery in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Método: A revisão sistemática da literatura seguiu as diretrizes do Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) e abrangeu as bases de dados PubMed, LILACS/BVS, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase e ScienceDirect.

Objective: This literary review evaluates and identifies measurable indicators and various tools to provide safety and quality care in diagnostic imaging. In that order, it was an exhaustive bibliographic study of an exploratory, documentary type, because the data was obtained through direct sources based on a sample of 58 scientific articles in different journals such as Pubmed, Google academic, Ebscohost, Scopus, Elsiever, Springer Open, IOP Science: its fundamental purpose being the determination of patient safety in radiology. Result: The error in a radiological image, its reading, or an overexposure, those in which the wrong patient or the wrong area is irradiated, is not a planned action or the use of an incorrect plan to achieve an objective. From this perspective, modern radiation safety warns against overemphasis on error classification and quantitative measurement in creating safety in a complex environment. Conclusion: Patient safety and quality in diagnostic imaging can be improved by recognizing that adverse events occur, learning from them, and working to prevent them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several variables can influence the treatment and outcome of orthognathic surgery, one of which is the angle of the mandibular ramus. The objective of this study is to analyze the upper airways (UA) of patients prior to orthognathic surgery, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to correlate their volume with the angle of the mandibular ramus. DICOM (Digital Image Communication in Medicine) images of a radiology clinic were used, with a survey of 124 full face CBCT scans, from 2015 to 2018, and the measurement of the total volume in mm² through software. To obtain the values of the angle of the mandibular ramus, images obtained from medical reports were used, through morphological evaluation. The values were tabulated and subsequently statistical analysis was performed using the ANOVA test to assess the differences between the mean airway volumes (mm²) according to gender, age and mandibular ramus angle. However, the angle of the ramus did not influence the volume of the UA, but a greater average of UA volume was observed in male individuals and in individuals over 34 years of age. There is no evidence that it is possible to measure or predict the volume of the UA by evaluating the angle of the mandibular ramus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The XAVIA PACS-RIS platform is a digital medical imaging system developed in Cuba that allows for the display, storage, and transmission of digital medical images. It has been implemented in 27 clinical institutions in Cuba and has contributed to the development of digital medical radiology in the country. The platform has led to cost savings by replacing radiographic films and promotes environmental sustainability. The introduction of new technologies in radiology in Cuba will facilitate teleradiology processes and expand access to medical imaging services. The platform consists of several applications that manage and archive medical studies, process and analyze medical images, issue radiological study reports, route imaging studies, enable web-based search and analysis of imaging studies, synchronize image server databases, serve as an update server for the medical image viewer, and automate workflows in the imaging area and manage patient data. The platform has resulted in significant time and cost savings, improved patient care, and environmental benefits. The economic impact of digital radiology solutions, specifically the XAVIA PACS-RIS platform, in Cuba is discussed, highlighting the savings on software license costs and preservation of foreign currency. The potential benefits of cloud-based PACS solutions and the integration of artificial intelligence in radiology are also mentioned. The XAVIA PACS-RIS platform has successfully contributed to the digital transformation of radiology in Cuba, but challenges related to technological infrastructure need to be addressed for wider adoption. The spine is the third most frequent location for metastatic disease, after the lung and liver. On the other hand, the most frequent bone tumours are metastases and the spine is the main location. A review of the different imaging techniques available, both radiological and nuclear medicine, and the morphological appearance of spinal metastases in each of them is performed. Magnetic resonance imaging is the best imaging modality for detection of spinal metastases. It is important to make the differential diagnosis between vertebral fracture of osteoporotic and pathological cause. Spinal cord compression is a serious complication of metastatic disease and its assessment by imaging through objective scales is decisive for estimating spinal stability and therefore establishing treatment. Lastly, percutaneous intervention techniques are briefly discussed.

Introduction: The use of radiographs as a complementary element for diagnosis is fundamental to the professional practice of every dental surgeon. Therefore, it is important to know not only the benefits of oral radiology and the fundamentals of radiological protection, but also to determine their level of application or adherence to compliance with the regulatory aspects that regulate the use of ionizing radiation in dentistry. Objective: To relate the knowledge of oral radiology care, the advantages and dangers in taking radiographs with compliance with the norms of radiological protection and ionizing radiation in dental students of a dental teaching clinic. Methods: The study population consisted of 180 fourth year dental students who used the radiological equipment in the teaching dental clinic during 2019 (second semester) and 2020 (first quarter). A representative sample of 104 students was taken, incorporated into the study by simple random sampling. Two data collection instruments were applied, one to evaluate knowledge (questionnaire) and the other to verify compliance with standards (checklist) on radiological protection and diagnostic imaging in dental practice. For the statistical analysis the chi-square statistical test was applied with a significance level of 95 %. Results: No statistically significant relationship was found (p = 0.30) between theoretical knowledge of radiological protection and diagnostic imaging with respect to compliance with the norms that regulate its application (p > 0.05). Ninety percent of participants have fair to excellent knowledge. However, only 32 % comply with the technical norms of ionizing radiation protection in their clinical practice. Conclusion: Dental students have sufficient knowledge of radiation protection and diagnostic imaging. However, this knowledge is not reflected in practices that adhere to the standards.

Health professionals are obliged to provide the patient and/or his or her guardian with information about examinations and treatment. In the case of examinations involving the use of ionizing radiation, informed consent is essential to weigh the associated benefits and risks. This study evaluates the knowledge and attitude of radiographers regarding informed consent in the radiology department. It is a descriptive cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire, divided into three sections and containing 19 questions, detailing the demographics, knowledge, and attitude of radiographers. Participant responses were scored between 1 and 3, then calculated and averaged to determine mean scores. Student's t-test was used to determine the statistical significance between means. Mean scores for knowledge and attitudes ranged from 11.60 ±1.72 to 18.73 ±1.84. Radiographers with more experience showed a statistically significant difference (17.45 ±1.23) (p < 0.00) with those with less experience (15.34 ±1.52). Twenty-one percent of the respondents did not seek consent from patients prior to examination. This study demonstrated that these professionals are knowledgeable about informed consent; however, more emphasis should be placed on practice by providing training courses and disseminating correct practice.
