Oral mucoceles are the most common benign minor salivary gland lesions. It is of interest to document the prevalence of oral mucocele among outpatients at the Saveetha Dental Hospital, India. We used patient data (12 case records) with mucocele occurrence for this analysis. Data included age, gender, diagnosis, lesion duration and relevant dental history. Data shows that oral mucocele were seen predominantly in males (66%) when compared to females (34%). The most affected site in the oral cavity was the lower lip (58%). Thus, data shows that oral mucocele was predominantly seen in males compared to females. Data also shows that the lower lip is often affected.

Background:Oral mucocele is considered to be a common benign lesion of the oral cavity characterized by fluctuant, painless and is distinct in two different forms, i.e. extravasations and retention. Trauma to mucus membrane or salivary gland is the most common etiologic factor. Case-Presentation:A 27-year-old female patient presented at the dental Out-patient Department (OPD) in our institute with the complaint of a swelling on the right side of her lower lip for the last three months. Management & Results:Based on the history & clinical examination, the diagnosis of oral mucocele was concluded. The treatment plan was discussed with the patient in which she was informed about the chairside surgical removal of the tissue under local anesthesia. On the 10th day of the surgery, sutures were removed, the scar was irrigated with saline and the usual check-up was performed which revealed no recurrence. Aim: This paper reports a case of mucocele in the left side of the lower lip treated by conventional surgical excision of the lesion.Background: Mucoceles are most frequently occurring benign salivary gland lesion.The most common site of occurrence of mucocelein the oral cavity is the lower lip. Extravasation type is most frequently occurring lesion because of the extravasation of mucus secretion into the fibrous connective tissue that result from an alterationof minor salivary glands and ducts. The main etiological factors are trauma or lip biting habit. Because of its pathognomonic presentation, the diagnosis is mainly clinical. Histopathogical investigation is also necessary to rule out other salivary lesions or tumours.Case Report: In this report, a mucocele developed in the fourteen old year female patient is described. Surgical excision of the lesion was planned followed by the gentle dissection of the lesion. Histopathological examinationrevealed the presence of cystic cavity surrounded by the underlining connective tissue stroma, which consist of numerous salivary gland tissues lined by inflammatory cell infiltration suggestive of mucous extravasation cyst.Conclusion:Out of various treatment modalities, Simple surgical excision is the treatment of choice, alleviating patient’s distress and discomfort.Clinical significance: Oral mucocele is the most common benign lesionoccuring in the oral cavity in children. Thus clinical knowledge about the diagnosis and treatment of oral mucocele is necessary to avoid further complications in children.

A common benign lesion in children’s oral cavity is mucocele on the lower lips that originates from the accumulation of mucous due to local trauma and a lip-biting habit. Lip-biting is often motivated by a psychological condition of anxiety. Mucoceles are painless but can be bothersome for patients when eating and speaking. Mucoceles can affect the general population but are more common among the young. The etiology of oral mucoceles may vary, and surgical treatment is best chosen for its convenience, child-friendliness, and high treatment success rate. Awareness education for children and parents is necessary to eliminate a lip-biting habit. If the pattern persists due to anxiety, it is essential to inquire more about the etiology and consult a professional psychologist.

Background. Mucocele is the most common minor salivary glands disease. Its management may present a challenge for dental professionals. The aim of the present clinical case was to describe mucocele treatment with diode laser and its benefits. Case Report. A case of lower lip mucocele in a 10-year-old female patient is reported. A conventional excision surgery was performed. Two months later, the patient reported discomfort and swelling at the same operative site. The lesion had recurred. Thus, mucocele was removed using a diode laser with wavelength of 980 nm, an initiated fiberoptic tip of 300 μm, in continuous mode, and a power setting of 2 Watts. The procedure was rapidly completed with no bleeding. The patient was followed-up after 2 weeks and 6 months. The wound healed without complications: no postoperative discomfort or pain and no infection. There was no recurrence. Conclusion. Diode laser is an effective, easy, bloodless, and well-accepted procedure to treat mucocele in pediatric patients.

Mucocele is a benign lesion characterised by an extravasation or retention of mucous secretion in submucosal tissue from minor salivary glands. The occurrence of mucocele is common in the oral cavity, with more than 70% of cases on lower labial mucosa. The occurrence of mucocele on the tongue is considered rare and accounted for only 2.25% in the previous literature. Histopathological examination plays a great role in the confirmation of the clinical diagnosis. Management of mucocele is at times challenging. This paper highlights a rare case of mucocele in a 5-month-old infant who was successfully managed under day-care anaesthesia.

Mucoceles are common lesions of the oral cavity that result from an alteration in the minor salivary glands due to mucus accumulation and are broadly classified into extravasation and retention types. Rapid appearance, specific location, history of trauma, bluish color, and consistency help in the diagnosis. There are various treatment modalities which include conventional surgical removal, laser ablation, cryosurgery, sclerotherapy, micro-marsupialization, and intralesional injection of sclerosing agent or corticosteroid. Intralesional corticosteroid therapy and micro-marsupialization, though widely accepted treatment choices, the complete regression may not always be assured holding the importance of case selection and regular follow-ups for timely recognition of recurrences. This report highlights on the management of mucocele of lower lip in a 12-year-old female treated with different modalities: intralesional injection of corticosteroid, micro- marsupialization and surgical approach.

Background: Mucocele is a clinical term referring to a swelling caused by saliva accumulation at the site of an obstructed or traumatized minor salivary gland duct. This article reports the efficiency of intralesional corticosteroid injection in the treatment of a recurrent oral mucocele in a pediatric patient. Case presentation: A 7-year-old girl presented with the chief complaint of a painless swelling on the lower lip. A gradual increase in size with some episodes of emptying was noticed. The intraoral examination revealed a sessile, nodular and exophytic lesion on the lower lip. Two consecutive intralesional injections of 40 mg/ml triamcinolone acetonide were done at the base of the lesion. A significant reduction in size was observed after the first injection, and the lesion disappeared after two weeks. No recurrence was noticed during the one-year follow-up. Conclusion: Intralesional corticosteroid injection may be considered a less invasive and cost-effective approach for the management of oral mucoceles.

IntroductionMucocele is a painless swelling in the oral cavity usually confined to the lower lip. Of the various treatment techniques surgery remains the best modality.ObjectivesThe present study is aimed to observe the prevalence of mucocele in Eastern Region of Nepal and to compare the results of extramucosal enucleation and submucosal excision as the treatment of mucocele.MethodologyThis prospective study was conducted on patients diagnosed with mucocele in Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital; a tertiary centre in Eastern Nepal during the period between June 2014 to April 2017. Out of total 37 cases two groups were divided based upon size of mucocele. Patients underwent extramucosal enucleation in cases where the size of mucocele was less than 1 cm and submucosal excision was done in patients whose size of the mucocele exceeded 1 cm. The data was entered and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) vs 21. Different parameters like wound infection, scar formation, recurrence, healing time, follow up were compared for both the methods.ResultThe mean age of the patient in extramucosal enucleation was 9.90±2.807 while in submucosal excision was 11.22±3.068 years. The most common location for mucocele in both the groups was the lower lip; who underwent either extramucosal enucleation (90%) or submucosal excision (70.4%). Recurrence was not observed in submucosal excision whereas one patient with extramucosal enucleation had recurrence.ConclusionMucocele in comparison to extramucosal enucleation as it usually healed within a week with fewer incidences of wound infection and without any recurrence.Birat Journal of Health Sciences Vol.2/No.1/Issue 2/ Jan - April 2017, Page: 215-218

Mucoceles are common in the minor salivary and sublingual glands. Sclerotherapy is a possible treatment strategy for mucoceles. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of sclerotherapy with promethazine hydrochloride injection in treating mucoceles. Thirty-seven patients were enrolled. Sclerotherapy was performed with promethazine hydrochloride injection (25mg/ml) through the mucosa. Patients were followed up at 1, 3, and 6 months after the last sclerotherapy. Clinical data were reviewed. The lesions (range 2-30mm in diameter) occurred on the ventral tongue tip (20 patients), lower lip (11 patients), and floor of the mouth (six patients). The amount of sclerosant per injection ranged from 0.2ml to 1ml. At the 6-month follow-up, 33 patients showed resolution with no recurrence. One patient showed a significant response with a 5-mm-diameter nodule remaining after two sclerotherapies. Three patients who underwent two or more sclerotherapies failed to show an improvement. The overall cure rate was 91.9% (96.8% for mucoceles of the minor salivary gland, 66.7% for ranulas). Complications were rare and mild. Sclerotherapy with promethazine hydrochloride injection for the treatment of mucoceles is safe. It is effective for mucoceles of the minor salivary glands, but its application for ranulas requires further investigation.

Mucocele é definida como fenômeno de retenção ou extravasamento de muco. A mucocele oral é provocada por traumatismos mecânicos, que comprimem e vedam o ducto das glândulas salivares menores, impossibilitando a secreção de saliva, mesmo sua produção continuando a ocorrer, fazendo com que haja aumento de volume da glândula e ducto envolvidos. Existem várias modalidades de tratamento que incluem excisão cirúrgica da lesão, laserterapia, criocirurgia, escleroterapia, micromarsupialização, injeção intralesional de corticosteroide ou agente esclerosante, além da regressão espontânea. A remoção cirúrgica convencional das mucoceles utilizando um bisturi é considerada a opção mais comum e requer a ressecção completa da lesão e glândulas salivares menores associadas para diminuir o risco de recidiva. O presente trabalho relata um caso de excisão cirúrgica de mucocele em mucosa labial inferior causada por mordida acidental, realizada em paciente atendido na clínica de Odontologia do Centro de Saúde Odontominas, Patos/PB. Diante disso, discute sobre o diagnóstico e as diferentes terapias (cirúrgicas e não cirúrgicas) para o tratamento de mucocele. Após a remoção cirúrgica da lesão, os resultados se mostraram satisfatórios, com pós-operatório indolor, sem edema ou quaisquer outras queixas por parte do paciente. Não houveram recidivas ou aparecimento de novas lesões. Background Oral mucocele is the most common minor salivary gland lesion with good prognosis after surgical removal. However, its recurrence is not rare, sometimes bothersome. This study aimed to identify the possible predictive variables affecting the recurrence rate of oral mucocele. Material and Methods The histoclinical data of 164 patients diagnosed with oral mucocele were retrospectively obtained by reviewing dental records. The predictive variables for its recurrence were identified by analyzing its recurrence rate according to clinical variables. Results The recurrence rate showed the significant differences according to location and age. Oral mucocele recurred with significantly higher frequency on the ventral mucosa of tongue (50.0%) than on the labial/buccal mucosa (8.8%). Its recurrence was significantly more common in the younger patients (aged < 30 years, 16.0%) than in the older patients (aged > 30 years, 4.4%). However, there was no significant difference in recurrence rates between surgical procedures using scalpels and those using lasers. Conclusions Patients with oral mucocele should be more carefully informed of its possible recurrence, especially when it is found on the ventral surface of the tongue or in a younger population. Oral mucocele is a benign cystic exophytic lesion affecting the minor salivary gland and is especially present in pediatric patients (3% under 14 years). It is characterized by an extravasation or retention of fluid or mucus in the submucosal tissue of the minor salivary glands. Several surgical techniques have been proposed over the years, including the excision of the mucocele by using the injection of a hydrocolloid impression material in the light of the cyst to prevent the collapse of the cystic wall and solidify the lesion, resulting in a better cleavage plan. The combined clinical approach between the combination of Shira’s technique and the surgical excision of the cystic lesion results in a conservative surgical removal of the lesion. Here, we reported the removal of a labial mucocele in a 14-year-old male patient, using the injection of a hydrocolloid impression material. At a 12 months follow up, the patient showed complete healing of the surgical site, showing a pinkish lip lining mucosa without scarring or recurrence of the primary lesion. The combined therapeutic approach between Shira’s technique and surgical excision allows a safe and predictable excision of the labial mucocele, minimizing the risk of recurrence.

Oral mucocele of the lips is a common ailment in patients who are habituated to lip biting or by trauma to lip mucosa. Lower lip is said to be the more prone site in oral cavity. The treatment of choice is excision or marsupialization under local anaesthesia. But these interventions come with complications like injury to adjacent salivary ducts, which further develops new lesions. Thus, this case study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of Kshara karma in oral mucocele as a minimal invasive procedure. A 42 years old health seeker with no significant medical history, reported with the chief complaints of a painless swelling, over the inner aspect of lower lip for 8 months. The lesion was diagnosed as a retention mucocele of the lower lip based on the history and clinical findings. It was treated with Kshara karma under topical anaesthesia. Patient was observed post operatively for 7 days. The lesion had regressed in size gradually without any post-operative discomfort or complication. A follow up after 6 months shows no recurrence, no visible scar/ fibrosis at the site of lesion. As the chances of recurrence in oral mucocele is high, the management with conventional surgical techniques is challenging. Kshara karma being a minimal invasive procedure is seen to have better outcome. Further prospective studies are needed to evaluate the reproducibility, pros and cons of this procedure.

Background: Mucocele belongs to the category of reactive lesions affecting the salivary gland related to obstruction or trauma of the salivary glands. These are pseudocysts formed due to the accumulation of pooled mucus. Objectives: To evaluate the clinicopathologic features including variations of 50 oral mucocele cases Materials and Methods: Archival review for the 50 cases reported as mucoceles was performed, and data for the following parameters were recorded: Age, gender, history of trauma, site and clinical presentation, variation in histology, treatment mode, and recurrence. Results: A total of 50 cases of mucoceles were retrieved for the archives for study. All were extravasation phenomenon (100%), no retention phenomenon was found, seen in the second (36%) and third (46%) decade, with male preponderance (male:female 19:6). Most common locations were lower lip (96%), floor of the mouth (6%), and ventral tongue (4%). Commonly presented as soft, fluctuant, bluish swelling associated with history of trauma. Variations included superficial mucocele (10%), clear cell change (4%) and papillary infoldings (2%) and 6% of recurrence cases. Conclusion: Although it is a benign lesion which is commonly encountered and excised in dental practice, the classic clinical presentation of soft, fluctuant swelling accompanied by history of evolution of the lesion does not pose much difficulty in diagnosis. Special variants of oral mucoceles occur infrequently; it is important to recognize these variants to avoid misdiagnosis, it is always wise to subject it to histopathological confirmation owing to its close clinical resemblance to neoplastic condition.

Purpose The aim of this study was to illustrate and confirm that the complete intraoral excision of the sublingual gland alone, is anatomically the most rational approach, for the management of plunging ranula. Material and methods We retrospectively reviewed clinical charts of diagnosed HIV-infected patients presenting with plunging ranula. The intraoral approach was used for the complete excision of the sublingual gland with evacuation of the pseudocystic content only. Neither extra oral approach, nor ranula dissection / drainage was performed. The surgical procedure was performed using local anesthesia. Pre- and postoperative MRI-scan investigations were recorded. Histological reports were documented to confirm the diagnosis of oral mucocele. Patients were clinically monitored. Results We identified 90 adults presenting with oral mucocele, type ranula. Seventy (77%) of them were diagnosed with HIV infection. Plunging ranula was recorded in 35 (50%) patients from the latter group. The study enrolled 11 operated patients whose files contained useable data, including an acceptable follow-up period. The postoperative follow-up period ranged from three to 15 months. The clinical and postoperative MRI-scans of operated patients demonstrated satisfactory results. There were neither postoperative complications nor recurrence of ranula reported. Conclusion The location of the sublingual gland in the floor of the mouth coupled with the physio-pathogenesis of the plunging ranula, makes the transoral complete excision of the offending gland, with the intraoral evacuation of the pseudocyst, anatomically the most rational approach for plunging ranula management. There is no need for cervical approach, ranula dissection and/or postoperative placement of drainage.

The exact prevalence in children is not reported, but they are thought to occur more frequently in younger individuals when compared to adults. The age old treatment for mucocele involves surgical excision, which is associated with mental trauma and discomfort to the patient. Other treatment options that can be considered include cryosurgery, CO2 laser ablation, micro marsupialization, intralesional corticosteroid injection, marsupialization and electrocautery. Cryosurgery is the procedure where there is deliberate destruction of tissue by freezing, using liquid nitrogen. This treatment is well received by patients, as minimal or no local anesthesia is used, relative lack of discomfort, no bleeding and minimal to no scarring after healing. This paper discuses two cases of oral mucocele treated via surgical excision and cryosurgery.

Mucocele (also known as ranula or salivary gland mucous cyst) of the newborn is a lesion present on the intraoral cavity, with the potential to interfere with respiration and feeding. In the present report, a case of mucocele in a 4-month female patient has been described. As conventional surgery can be followed by several complications such as intraoperative bleeding, difficulties in wound healing, and maintenance of sterility during surgery, in the present case, the use of diode laser has been planned. A topic anesthesia with lidocaine gel was performed. A diode laser (810 nm wavelength, continuous wave mode, power output of 3 watt, and 0.4 mm diameter fiber optic) was set for excising the lesion. The tip was directed at an angle of 10 to 15°, moving around the base of the lesion with a circular motion. The procedure was completed in 3 minutes. The patient was visited with a follow-up of 2 weeks and 4 months after excision. The intraoral wound healed without complications, and no signs of infection or mass recurrence were noted. The histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of mucocele. On the basis of the results of the present case report, the use of diode laser can be easily performed also in a noncompliant newborn patient for successful excision of mucocele lesions, and checklist of clinical procedures has been described.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of oral and maxillofacial lesions among children from representative regions of Brazil. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted. Biopsy records comprising the period from 2000 to 2015 were obtained from the archives of three Brazilian oral pathology referral centers. A total of 32,506 biopsy specimens were analyzed, and specimens from 1,706 children aged 0–12 years were selected. Gender, age, anatomical location and histopathological diagnosis were evaluated. Descriptive statistics was carried out. Likelihood ratio tests were used to evaluate the association between the categorical variables. The level of significance was set at 0.05. The post-hoc test was used to identify the subgroups that significantly differed from one another, and the Bonferroni correction was applied. A total of 1,706 oral and maxillofacial lesions were diagnosed in pediatric patients, including 51.9% girls. Oral mucocele was the most prevalent reactive/inflammatory lesion (64%). The most commonly affected sites were the lips (34.5%) and mandible (19.9%). A significant association was observed between age and the group of lesions of the oral cavity (p < 0.001), and between age and anatomical location (p < 0.001). Pediatric oral and maxillofacial lesions were frequent and showed wide diversity, with the prevalence of mucocele. Knowledge of oral lesions is important for pediatric dentists worldwide, since it provides accurate data for the diagnosis and oral health of children.

Oral mucocele is the most common benign lesion of minor salivary gland caused due to any form of mechanical trauma to the excretory duct of the gland. It is of two types – mucous extravasation phenomenon and mucous retention type. Extravasation type is more common. Here, we report a case of a 65-year-old male patient with a complaint of painful swelling in the lower lip for 1 month with a history of trauma in the lower lip. It was clinically diagnosed as traumatic fibroma, and an excisional biopsy was done. However, the histopathology was basically that of mucous extravasation phenomenon coexisting with the features of a reactive lesion implicating the potential role of chronic irritation in the impairment of normal healing process. Considering the fact that long-standing chronic inflammation in a benign lesion can even lead to malignant transformation of that lesion; here, we highlight the role of a good clinicopathologic correlation and the significance of prompt intervention and treatment. Furthermore, emphasizing the potential need for postoperative follow-up by the dentist, how much ever trivial the lesion may appear to be in the best interest of the patient.

Objectives/Hypothesis To describe clinical characteristics of oral mucoceles/ranulas, with a focus on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related salivary gland diseases. Study Design A descriptive and clinical study, with review of patient data. Material and Methods We reviewed 113 referred cases of oral mucocele. The following anatomical sites were identified: lip, tongue, and floor of the mouth (simple ranulas), as well as plunging ranulas. The age and gender data of the patients with oral mucoceles were recorded. The HIV status of the patients and other information were reviewed. Results There were 30 (26.5%) males and 83 (73.5%) females. Most patients were below 30 years of age, with the peak frequency in the first and second decade. Ranula (simple and plunging) represented 84.1% of the mucocele locations. Mucocele on the lips represented 10.6%. Seventy-two (63.7%) patients were HIV positive; and 97.2% of them had ranulas. Thirty-eight (33.6%) patients presented with plunging ranulas; and 92.1% of them were HIV positive, compared with two patients presenting with plunging ranulas in the HIV-negative group. These results strongly suggest that an HIV-positive patient is statistically (P < 0.001) more at risk of presenting with not only a simple, but also a plunging ranula type. Conclusion This study presents a different clinical picture of oral mucoceles/ranulas, as observed in HIV-positive patients. Additionally, it suggests a possible clinical link between the two pathologies. The authors strongly support the suggestion that oral mucocele/ranula is an HIV-related salivary gland disease. Background: Oral mucocele is the most common benign minor (accessory) salivary gland lesion, caused due to mechanical trauma to the excretory duct of the gland. Clinically they are characterized by single or multiple, soft, fluctuant nodule, ranging from the normal color of the oral mucosa to deep blue. It affects at any age and is equally present in both sexes with highest incidence in second decade of life. They are classified as extravasation or retention type. Objectives: To analyze the data between 2010 and 2011 of, clinically and histopathologically diagnosed 58 oral mucoceles for age, gender, type, site, color, cause, symptoms and dimension. Results: Oral mucoceles were highly prevalent in the age group of 15-24 years, were seen in 51.72% of males and 48.28% of females, with a ratio of 1.07:1. The extravasation type (84.48%) was more common than the retention type (15.52%). The most common affected site was lower lip (36.20%) followed by ventral surface of the tongue (25.86%). The lowest frequency was observed in floor of mouth, upper lip and palate. The maximum numbers of mucoceles were asymptomatic (58.62%), and the color of the overlying mucosa had color of adjacent normal mucosa (48.28%). It was also observed that most of the mucoceles had diameter ranging from 5 to 14 mm. The causative factors of the lesion were lip biting (22.41%), trauma (5.18%) and numerous lesions (72.41%). Conclusion: Oral Mucoceles are frequently seen in an oral medicine service, mainly affecting young people and lower lip, measuring around 5 to 14 mm and the extravasation type being the most common.
