New urbanization (NU) construction is the basic direction of urbanization development in contemporary China. This paper selects the panel data of 36 representative cities in the Yangtze River economic belt (YREB) from 2006 to 2020, calculates the comprehensive index of NU and ecological environment (EE) by employing the entropy method, analyzes the spatial agglomeration characteristics of EE through spatial autocorrelation analysis, and tests the spatial effect of NU on EE on the basis of the dynamic spatial Durbin model. Results show that first, "time inertia" and spatial dependence exist in the urban EE of the YREB. Second, the NU has a positive role in promoting the EE. The development of NU in this area not only promotes the EE in this area, but also promotes the improvement of the EE in neighboring areas. Third, the increase in per capita wealth and the adjustment in industrial structure are beneficial to the improvement of EE. This paper discusses the impact of China's NU development on the urban EE. Results reveal the relationship between affluence, technological progress, industrial structure, opening to the outside world, environmental regulation, and EE. Objective To investigate the spatial and temporal evolution patterns of pension resource allocation across various provinces in China and to explore the spatial adaptability relationship and influencing factors between pension resource allocation and new urbanization development, providing recommendations for their balanced development. Methods An evaluation index system for pension resource allocation and new urbanization development levels in China was established. The coupling coordination model and Tobit model were employed to analyze the spatial adaptability and influencing factors of pension resources and new urbanization development. Results Between 2012 and 2021, there was a significant improvement in the levels of pension resource allocation and urbanization across 31 provinces in China; however, both exhibited notable regional disparities. The spatial adaptability between pension resource allocation and new urbanization levels required enhancement, with evident regional differences. Technological promotion and government guidance significantly impacted the spatial adaptability of pension resource allocation and new urbanization. Conclusion Macro-control should leverage government policy guidance and financial support. Technological development should facilitate the efficient utilization and effective scheduling of resources, and regional radiative effects should be harnessed to ensure unobstructed resource circulation channels and coordinated regional development. More than forty years passed since the start of the reform and opening policy in China, which made millions of peasants move to the city. Urbanization has become one of the most important social processes in China, which helped the country gain a powerful economic potential based on the accelerated industrialization. Social-economic development is impossible without the expansion of cities and their populations. Until recently, cities have been centers for developing human capital and ensuring economic growth. However, urbanization has negative consequences as it leads to an outflow of workforce from rural areas, thus threating their social development. To confront such a threat, the Chinese government introduced a new type of urbanization for the simultaneous revival of rural areas. These two national strategies may seem opposite in terms of goals and objectives: the first stategy aims at developing cities and improving urban living conditions; the second strategy aims at developing rural infrastructure; but both strategies have a common goal - to ensure social modernization with Chinese specificity, which implies harmonious development and urban-rural balance. The article aims at identifying social, managerial and economic features of the new urbanization policy in China as a two-pronged strategy of the simultaneous development of urban and rural areas. The implementation of this new type of urbanization is to solve a number of problems of internal migration, since peasants who have not managed to arrange their lives in the city cannot return to the countryside for different reasons. Local authorities of both cities and villages struggle to increase the size of their population, which determines conflicts and ineffective management decisions in many Chinese regions. In many cases, there is a clear discrepancy between the interests of society as a whole and the interests of regional administrative bodies implementing social-economic policies. China needs to solve these problems to ensure sustainable urban development while improving living conditions in rural areas.

Abstract New urbanization (NU) and ecological welfare performance (EWP) play pivotal roles in achieving sustainable urban development, with both emphasizing social equity and environmental management. Exploring the coordinated relationship between EWP and NU is invaluable for understanding the symbiotic interplay between humans and nature. We constructed a framework to elucidate the coupling mechanism of EWP and NU from the perspective of systems theory. We quantified the levels of NU and EWP utilizing the entropy weighting method and the super-efficient SBM method, respectively. Furthermore, we assessed the degree of coupling coordination between the two using the coupling coordination degree model (CCDM). Spatial and temporal evolution analysis was conducted, and factors influencing the degree of coupling coordination between EWP and NU were explored through a spatial–temporal geographically-weighted regression model (GTWR). The results indicate: (1) During the study period, the average annual increase in EWP in the study area was 2.59%, with a narrowing relative gap between cities. Conversely, the average annual increase in the level of NU was 7.6%, with demographic and economic dimensions carrying the highest weights. (2) The type of coupling coordination between EWP and NU transitions from basic coordination to moderate coordination, with the development of EWP lagging behind that of NU. (3) City size demonstrates a positive yet diminishing trend on the coupling coordination level, with economic development exerting the greatest influence and exhibiting a "V" trend, while the impact of green technology innovation diminishes negatively. Additionally, regional disparities are significant, with city size exhibiting a negative impact in areas of high population density and low economic levels, and green technology innovation showing notable polarization characteristics in core cities. These findings serve as a foundation for fostering coordinated ecological development amid the rapid urbanization process of the Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle.

This study evaluates the new urbanization (NU) quality and the ecological resilience (ER) of 33 districts and counties in the Urban Agglomeration of Central Guizhou from 2010 to 2020. For this purpose, we used a modified coupled coordination degree (CCD) model, spatial autocorrelation analysis, and trend surface analysis to analyze the spatiotemporal evolutionary characteristics of the CCD of NU and ER. Meanwhile, we used a modified gravity model and social network analysis to investigate the spatial connection network (SCN) characteristics of the CCD of NU and ER. The results show that (1) the general NU quality has increased significantly in the Urban Agglomeration of Central Guizhou. There is, however, a downward trend in ER. (2) For the CCD of NU and ER in the Urban Agglomeration of Central Guizhou, there is coupling dissonance, with a double U-shaped arc, characterized by west > north > south > east > central. (3) The network density increases and then decreases. Network connectivity is 1, and network efficiency decreases and then increases. (4) During the study period, the SCN is characterized by significant core–edge characteristics; there are no "island nodes" in the SCN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rapid development of the digital economy poses both opportunities and challenges for the process of new urbanization. This study utilizes inter-provincial panel data covering the period from 2012 to 2021 in the Yellow River Basin. It employs fixed-effect, mediation effect, and threshold effect models to examine how the digital economy affects the high-quality development of new urbanization in the area. Key findings of the study indicate that the digital economy has a positive impact on the high-quality development of new urbanization in the Yellow River Basin through its facilitation of industrial structure upgrading. The impact exhibits a non-linear "marginal effect," transitioning from slower to faster growth rates. This paper aims to establish a basis for decision-making and policy formulation aimed at enhancing the high-quality development of the digital economy within the context of new urbanization in the Yellow River Basin. Scientific quantitative measurement of the coupling relationship between urban population (UP) and urban land (UL) is conducive to promoting intensive land use, coordinated human–land development, and new urbanization development. This research proposed an improved coupling model of polar coordinates to study the spatiotemporal coupling characteristics between UP and UL at the prefecture-level city scale in China from 2010 to 2020. The study results include the following: (1) The growth rate of UL in China's prefecture-level cities was higher than that of UP. The per capita urban land (PUL) was always within the ideal range, and the dynamic human–land coupling state remained reasonable. (2) The UP, UL, and dynamic human–land coupling rationality in China showed characteristics that were high in the east and low in the west. The PUL showed characteristics that were high in the northwest and low in the southeast. (3) This study divided China's prefecture-level cities into four regions according to the coupling characteristics and formulated regionally differentiated optimization strategies. In summary, this study carried out a more scientific and reasonable quantitative measurement of the coupling relationship between UP and UL in China, resulting in a more reliable and targeted formulation of optimization strategies. With the advancement of urbanization and the continuous deepening of reforms in urban–rural systems, China's urbanization process has entered a new era of integrated urban–rural integration. Currently, as a global "new green revolution" gains momentum, numerous countries are deeply integrating the concept of sustainable development into new urban planning. Against this backdrop, urban planners worldwide are committed to building green, livable, and smart cities that can meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs, thus achieving the vision of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. Characteristic towns, leveraging their resource advantages, play a significant role in achieving sustainable regional economic development. They serve as valuable references for China's urban transformation and upgrading, as well as for promoting rural urbanization, and are crucial avenues for advancing China's urban–rural integration development strategy. The evaluation of the development level of characteristic towns is a necessary step in their progress and a strong guarantee for promoting their construction and development. Therefore, effectively evaluating the social benefits of characteristic towns is paramount. This study constructs an evaluation model based on the grey rough set theory and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution of TOPSIS. Firstly, an evaluation index system for the development level of characteristic towns is established. Then, the grey relational analysis method and rough set theory are used to reduce the index attributes, while the conditional information entropy theory is introduced to determine the weights of the reduced indicators. Finally, the TOPSIS model is applied to evaluate the development level of characteristic towns. Through empirical research, eight characteristic towns in Zhejiang Province, China, were assessed and ranked, verifying the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed model. Transport infrastructure plays a crucial role in facilitating the high-quality development of new urbanization. Based on the provincial panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2013 to 2020, this study empirically analyzed the impact and mechanism of transportation infrastructure on the high-quality development of new urbanization from multiple perspectives. The results showed that transportation infrastructure can significantly promote the development of new urbanization, and the promoting effect was significantly positive in the eastern and western regions, while it was positive but not significant in the central region. Transportation infrastructure can promote the development of new urbanization by promoting industrial agglomeration. When the population density is lower than the corresponding threshold value, the transport infrastructure can significantly promote the development of new urbanization; when the population density is higher than the corresponding threshold value, the transport infrastructure will significantly hinder the development of new urbanization. Transport infrastructure has a significant positive spatial spillover effect on the development of new urbanization, and the positive spatial spillover effect has been significant in the eastern, central and western regions. As a key measure to realize Chinese-style modernization, the construction of new urbanization injects new vitality into China ‘s urban economic growth by building a modern industrial system, and it is also of great significance to improve urban economic resilience. This study examines data from 278 Chinese cities spanning the period 2006–2022, utilizing a multi-period Difference-in-Differences model and a moderating effect model to investigate the impact of new urbanization on cities' economic resilience. The findings indicate that the adoption of modern urbanization significantly enhances cities' economic resilience. Notably, when examined from the perspectives of geographical location, urban scale, urban agglomeration, and urban economic development level, the impact of new urbanization is particularly pronounced in the eastern region, small cities, non-urban agglomeration cities, and cities with lower levels of economic development. The mechanism test demonstrates that new urbanization affects cities’ economic resilience by fostering technological innovation and upgrading the industrial structure. Essentially, technological innovation and industrial restructuring serve as intermediaries in fortifying economic resilience through the implementation of new urbanization. As a result, recommendations are formulated to bolster the resilience of urban economies.

Under accelerating urbanization, urban air pollution has emerged as a critical research area. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) poses significant health risks, yet research exploring the nonlinear impact of multi-dimensional urbanization (M-URB) on PM2.5 and its spatial spillover effect remains insufficient. Considering China’s emphasis on new urbanization and ecological civilization construction, both of which are defined by sustainable development attributes, research on the effects of urbanization on PM2.5 becomes imperative. Therefore, we performed exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) and standard ellipse deviation (SED) analysis to investigate the dynamic spatiotemporal characteristics of PM2.5 in 285 cities in China from 2006 to 2020. In addition, we employed a spatial econometric model to examine the nonlinear impact and spatial spillover effect of M-URB on PM2.5. Our analysis revealed that between 2006 and 2020, China experienced a fluctuating and declining trend in PM2.5 levels, with a regional distribution characterized by east–west polarization. The PM2.5 showed a pronounced clustering characteristic, with its centroid demonstrating a discernible “south to north” movement pattern. In addition, M-URB displayed varying degrees of nonlinearity along with geographical spillover effects on PM2.5. Population urbanization (P-URB), social urbanization (S-URB), and ecological urbanization (e-URB) initially facilitated and later mitigated the presence of PM2.5, demonstrating inverted N-shaped patterns. The processes of economic urbanization (E-URB) and land urbanization (L-URB) resulted in a rise in PM2.5 levels, and the correlation between these factors has yet to achieve a point of improvement in air quality. Hence, the spatiotemporal variation in PM2.5 in China is attributable to the convergence and interplay of several elements, including socioeconomic factors and governmental policies. The findings of this study provide a valuable reference point for the implementation of strategies aimed at mitigating PM2.5 pollution and enhancing air quality.

In the face of the persistent degradation of ecological environments and fragmentation of ecological networks brought about by rapid urbanization, this study focuses on examining the interaction between urban land use intensity and ecological networks in the Xi'an Metropolitan Region (XAMR), China, and their impact on ecological equilibrium and sustainable development. By comprehensively evaluating the changes in land use intensity in XAMR from 2010 to 2020, the aim is to underscore the pivotal role of ecological networks in maintaining urban ecological balance and promoting sustainable development. The findings indicate a transition in land use intensity in the XAMR from low to high concentration, reflecting an intensification in land resource utilization during urbanization. However, the establishment and management of ecological networks can significantly enhance urban ecological security and biodiversity. Notably, this research identified crucial ecological corridors and source areas, augmenting the connectivity of urban green infrastructure and providing vital support for urban biodiversity. Additionally, a significant finding of this study is the spatial spillover effects generated by socioeconomic factors such as the proportion of tertiary and secondary industries and per capita GDP through the ecological network, which have profound impacts on land use intensity in the surrounding areas. These insights offer a novel understanding of the complex interactions within urban ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of incorporating ecological network construction in urban planning. Overall, through a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between the ecological network and land use intensity in the XAMR, this study proposes new directions for urban ecosystem management and land use planning, highlighting the significance of scientific ecological network planning and management in achieving long-term sustainable development in urbanization processes. Based on the panel data of 11 provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2002 to 2021, this paper uses the SBM-GML index method and the entropy value method to measure the level of agricultural green total factor productivity and the level of new urbanization and new industrialization in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and then uses the panel Tobit model to analyze the impact of new urbanization and new industrialization on agricultural green total factor productivity. The results show that the level of agricultural green total factor productivity of all provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2002 to 2006 is not satisfactory, but the level of agricultural green total factor productivity of all provinces and cities in the economic belt from 2007 to 2021 is significantly improved, and the level of new urbanization and industrialization in the Yangtze River Economic Belt also shows a steady upward trend. New-type urbanization and newtype industrialization have a significant positive impact on the improvement of agricultural green total factor productivity in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and the impact of new-type industrialization is even greater. Based on this, in order to further tap the potential of new urbanization and new industrialization in the Yangtze River Economic Belt to improve the green total factor productivity of agriculture, it is suggested that all provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt should steadily promote the development of new urbanization while continuously injecting new “vitality” into new industrialization, help improve the level of local agricultural green total factor productivity, and further reduce undesirable output by optimizing the agricultural industrial structure and transforming rural power grids. The Yangtze River Economic Belt is an important strategic economic belt in China. Exploring the coordinated relationship between its new urbanization and digital economy is of great significance for China to build a new development pattern and realize “Chinese path to modernization”. Based on panel data of new urbanization and digital economy in 11 provinces and cities of the Yangtze River Economic Belt in China from 2011 to 2020, a composite system comprehensive evaluation index system is established. The entropy weight method, coupling coordination degree model, and spatial autocorrelation model are used to analyze the level of coupling coordination development. The results show that the new urbanization, digital economy, and the coupling coordination degree of the two in the Yangtze River Economic Belt are showing an increasing trend year by year, with significant regional heterogeneity; the development of new urbanization and digital economy in the Yangtze River Economic Belt is imbalanced, and the level of digital economy generally lags behind that of new urbanization; the coupling and coordinated development of new urbanization and digital economy in the Yangtze River Economic Belt has significant spatial agglomeration characteristics. Therefore, China should explore plans and strategies for promoting digital economy in differentiated regions, leverage the radiation effect of the Yangtze River Delta region, and promote the early realization of new urbanization in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Scientific and technological innovation and the sustainable development of new urbanization are the key factors to promote national economic growth, and have a very important role in promoting regional development and international competitiveness. Based on the panel data of 16 cities in Chengdu-Chongqing dual-city economic circle from 2015 to 2022, this paper uses entropy weight method to determine the weight of each index and constructs a coupling coordination model to explore the sustainable development of scientific and technological innovation and new urbanization, the Panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR) model was used to further verify the interaction between the two. The empirical results show that the coupling coordination degree of scientific and technological innovation and new urbanization in Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle is increasing year by year. There is a balanced relationship between scientific and technological innovation and new urbanization, and the two are two-way Granger causality. Therefore, the conclusion puts forward the practical enlightenment of increasing investment in scientific and technological innovation, guiding enterprises to carry out scientific and technological innovation to feedback new urbanization and accelerate the construction of new urbanization, and actively integrating with urban development. Understanding the coupling coordination status between rural industrial integration (RII) and new urbanization (NU) is critical for the Chinese government to optimize policies that promote the synergetic and sustainable development of RII and NU. Based on constructing evaluation index systems, this paper uses the entropy value method, coupling coordination degree model, exploratory spatial analysis method, gravity center model, and geographical detector model to reveal the characteristics of the spatial–temporal differentiation of the coupling coordination and its driving factors in China. The results show that: (1) The regional differences in the coupling coordination degree between RII and NU are obvious, and the coupling coordination degree of China's three economic regions are all in an increasing trend, but the mean values in the central and western regions are always below the national average. (2) The coupling coordination degree has significant spatial agglomeration characteristics, but the regional differences are gradually decreasing. The whole country is still dominated by the low–low agglomeration, and the provinces with the high–high agglomeration are mainly located in the eastern region. (3) The gravity center of the coupling coordination degree has moved in both the east–west and north–south directions from 2011 to 2021, but the movement trend in the north–south direction is more obvious. (4) The economic development level, industrial structure, transportation conditions, government support capacity, financial support level, and agricultural mechanization level are important factors driving the spatial–temporal variation, and their interactions will enhance the differentiation. The results can provide a theoretical basis and decision-making reference for relevant government departments in China to promote the sustainable development of RII and NU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article takes 14 prefectures in Xinjiang as the research object, constructs an evaluation index system for new urbanization and intensive use of arable land, and comprehensively uses methods such as entropy method and coupling coordinated development model to study the comprehensive development level and spatiotemporal characteristics of the coupling coordinated development level between the two systems in Xinjiang from 2010 to 2020. The results show that the development level of new urbanization in Xinjiang is on the rise as a whole, but there are large differences among regions. Except for Urumqi, the development potential of new urbanization in other regions is still strong. Although the level of intensive use of cultivated land in the whole region is on the rise, the overall effect is not obvious. The level of intensive use of cultivated land is generally low except for Kashgar and Altay. In addition, the coupling and coordination degree of the two systems is mainly concentrated between “near imbalance” and “moderate coordination”. Therefore, on the basis of existing resources, Xinjiang should adjust measures to local conditions, steadily promote the construction of new urbanization, and simultaneously improve the intensive utilization of arable land, strengthen financial and technological investment, improve infrastructure, in order to coordinate development. New urbanization is an endogenous driving force to enhance domestic circulation. Driving the development of rural industries with urbanization to achieve interactive symbiosis has become an important topic to promote the coordinated development of urban and rural green. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2009 to 2021, this paper constructs an evaluation index system for new urbanization and rural inclusive green development, and uses principal component analysis and panel regression model to analyze the impact of new-type urbanization on inclusive green development in rural areas. The results of the study show the following: (1) Rural inclusive green development and new urbanization have been significantly improved during the study period, but there are significant regional differences. (2) The construction of the new urbanization significantly promotes rural inclusive green development, but there is significant spatial heterogeneity. This effect is more significant in the Eastern and Central regions. (3) Population urbanization, land urbanization, social urbanization, and environmental urbanization can effectively promote rural inclusive green development, but economic urbanization will have a negative impact on green development in the countryside during the study period. Therefore, it is necessary to further strengthen the leading role of central cities and urban agglomerations, to promote the countryside with the city and at the same time to combat environmental pollution and to create ecologically livable towns and villages. In addition, the government should strengthen top-level design, provide industrial support to backward areas, improve the spatial layout of urbanization, and promote the deepening of new urbanization. Common prosperity is an important feature of Chinese path to modernization, and urbanization is a necessary path to achieving Chinese path to modernization. However, the current urbanization of counties is plagued by problems such as unbalanced regional development, widening gap between urban and rural areas, unsound infrastructure construction, and imperfect public service support, which constrains the realization of common prosperity. How to build a scientific and reasonable evaluation system to assess the development level of county urbanization and the degree of urban-rural integration is of great significance in promoting the healthy development of county urbanization and realizing common prosperity. This paper systematically reviews the historical origin and theoretical connotation of common prosperity, explores the internal mechanism of county urbanization for common prosperity, and then bases on Amartya Sen's proposition that social development should be a continuous expansion of the “feasible range of capabilities” of human beings in order to realize greater substantive freedom, arguing that realizing the “common prosperity” as well as the “realization of free and comprehensive development of human beings” implies a continuous expansion of the scope of the feasible range of people's capabilities, and that, from the concrete point of view, not only the incomes of the inhabitants should be made fair and reasonable, but also the range of commodities and services that can be consumed by the urban and rural inhabitants should be continuously expanded, and the gaps between the groups should be continuously narrowed. Therefore, based on the principles of systematicity, scientificity, objectivity and foresight, this study is based on the data from the Statistical Yearbook and the big data from the platform of “ Data Intelligence Portal for Social Science Studies”(DIPS)developed by the “Joint Laboratory of Data Intelligence and Urban Future of Zhejiang University-Zhejiang Mobile”. The evaluation system of county urbanization is constructed from the three evaluation dimensions of income fairness, consumption fairness and urban-rural integration(first-level indicators), which includes 9 second-level indicators including indicators like affluence level, development potential and urban-rural income disparity etc. and 26 third-level indicators. Compared with the previous literature, this paper expands in the following two aspects: firstly, this study establishes a theoretical connection between common prosperity and county urbanization, and tries to construct a county urbanization evaluation system from this new perspective. The three-dimensional division of income fairness, consumption fairness and urban-rural integration structurally realizes the organic convergence of the value goal of common prosperity and the policy goal of county urbanization, takes into account the specific requirements of common prosperity on the income side and the consumption side, and also highlights the precision policy of county urbanization on urban-rural integration, which meets the requirements of the top-level design of the evaluation system of high-quality county urbanization based on the goal of common prosperity. Secondly, unlike the existing evaluation system that relies on statistical yearbook data, this research adds big data indicators that are accessible, identifiable, analyzable and replicable to the selection of indicators, so that the indicators not covered by the traditional statistical yearbook data can be meticulously portrayed in real-time feedback, helping to accurately capture the dynamic characteristics of the current urban development, and ultimately combining the advantages of the two to make the evaluation system of county urbanization more scientific and innovative. This study reveals, to a certain extent, the theoretical connotation between the national strategic goal of common prosperity and high-quality urbanization in counties, and the constructed indicator evaluation system not only provides academic references for decision-making and practice of urbanization construction, but also guides local governments to achieve the optimal allocation of resource elements between urban and rural areas and the bidirectional and efficient flow of resources, so as to promote the coordinated advancement of the common prosperity and the integration of urban and rural areas with high-quality development. The coupled and coordinated development of new urbanization and ecological environment holds significant importance for China's sustainable and high-quality economic and social development. By constructing an index system for new urbanization and ecological environment, and utilizing a coupled coordination degree model, the coupled coordination degrees of new urbanization and ecological environment were calculated for 31 provinces and municipalities in China. Subsequently, the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics and driving factors of the coupled coordination levels between the two systems were analyzed using non-parametric kernel density estimation and geographic detector models. The results indicate the following: (1) The overall coupled coordination degree of the two systems in the country transformed from a mildly imbalanced state to a barely coordinated state. The coupled coordination degrees of the two systems exhibit a "east-central-west" descending distribution pattern across the three major regions, with distinct temporal and internal differences. (2) The overall, eastern, and central regions show a decreasing trend in the improvement rate and imbalance level of the coupled coordination, while the western region exhibits an increasing trend in both improvement rate and imbalance level. The phenomenon of regional divergence between the eastern and western regions is evident. (3) Economic development, social security, technological innovation, industrial structure, market environment, government capacity, and openness to the outside world have significant influences on the coupled coordination of the two systems. The interaction among factors is stronger than the individual effects of each factor, highlighting the need to pay more attention to the cumulative effects of multiple factors on the coupled and coordinated development of the two systems. As one of China’s sunrise industries, tourism has always been the engine to promote the development of the national economy, and in 2018, the annual income of China’s tourism industry exceeded 5 trillion yuan unprecedentedly. In recent years, the traditional extensive production mode has inevitably brought about problems such as environmental pollution and public health threats, while helping the development of new urbanization, thus triggering a series of challenges in the environmental health system. The tourism industry, new urbanization, and environmental health system three cooperate and promote each other, the coordinated development between them for economic growth, new urbanization development, environmental protection, and public health play a vital role, in the post-epidemic era is a special period of historical opportunities, the public’s focus from the original sacrifice of environmental health in exchange for economic growth model began to green, low-carbon sustainable development mode, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as a tourism resource endowment rich region, It is of positive significance to explore the coupling degree and coordination between the tourism industry, new urbanization and environmental health system, and put forward targeted practical enlightenment, which is of positive significance for promoting the sustainable development of tourism industry. Taking Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as a case study, this paper constructs three comprehensive evaluation index systems of the tourism industry, new urbanization and environmental health system, and analyzes and compares the weights of various indicators in the three fields of tourism economy, new urbanization and environmental health system in Guangxi by using the entropy weight TOPSIS method. The coupling coordination model was used to measure the coupling degree and coordination degree of the tourism industry, new urbanization and environmental health system construction in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from 2009 to 2021. The empirical results show that the weights of various indicators change with the development of the social economy. The comprehensive efficacy index of Guangxi’s tourism industry has increased year by year for 11 consecutive years; At the end of the evaluation period, after the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, the evaluation index of the tourism industry, new urbanization and environmental health system all showed a downward trend to varying degrees. Before the pandemic, the coupling coordination type of the three subsystems generally experienced a transformation of “moderate dissonance-reluctant coordination-primary coordination-intermediate coordination,” but the overall development level was still poor. After the outbreak of the new crown epidemic, the coupling and coordination between the three has been reduced to a state of poor coordination. Because of the above research conclusions, this study proposes to make full use of the important time node of the post-epidemic era and proposes to actively promote the development of the tourism industry, promote the upgrading of the industrial structure, use digital empowerment of the economic form, optimize the environmental health system and other targeted countermeasures to keep the coupling degree and coordination between the three within a reasonable range. This ensures the sustainable development of social systems in the region. This study has made some contributions to the development of high-quality tourism and a healthy environment. First of all, it enriches the content of the environmental health system. This study takes the ecological environment and atmospheric environment in the environmental health system as the entry point and adds the index content of the environmental health evaluation system, which provides a certain supplement for the relevant research on the environmental health system strength. Secondly, the relationship between the tourism industry, new urbanization and environmental health is analyzed and into a unified theoretical framework. This study takes the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which is rich in tourism resources, as a case study site, and innovatively explores the coupling and coordination relationship among the tourism industry, new urbanization and environmental health system in the case site. Finally, it provides targeted countermeasures for the sustainable development path of the three systems of tourism industry, new urbanization and environmental health in the case site in the future. It is of positive practical significance to compare the coupling and coordination degree between the three, realize the coordinated, orderly, and healthy development of the three in the region, and provide operational suggestions for the upgrading of the tourism industry structure, the benign development of new urbanization, and the formulation of environmental health system policies.

Rural development needs to undergo traceable and innovative reforms in relevant systems in response to the requirements of new urbanization, especially in the land management system in rural areas, where there are many problems that contradict the development of new urbanization. Nowadays, the task of promoting new urbanization can provide guidance for the continuous completion of new rural construction in rural areas. Therefore, based on the background of new urbanization, the demand for rural land management system reform was explored, the compatibility between rural land management and new urbanization was analyzed, the problems in rural land management system were pointed out, and constructive optimization strategies were proposed for related issues. Existing studies have paid less attention to the impact of new urbanization (NU) on urban metabolic efficiency (UME). This paper empirically tests the mechanism and the effect of NU on UME based on China's panel data from 2008 to 2020, using China's NU pilot as a quasi-natural experiment. The study draws the following conclusions: (1) NU can significantly promote UME. (2) NU can promote UME for cities in neighboring regions. (3) The effect of NU on UME presents the heterogeneous characteristics of eastern region > central region > western region, non-urban agglomeration cities > urban agglomeration cities, and is greater in central cities than in non-central cities. (4) Mechanism analysis shows that NU can promote UME through six paths: promoting urban–rural integration and regional synergistic development, reducing urban sprawl and energy mismatch, strengthening urban–rural population mobility, and green innovation division of labor. The above results are not only conducive to incorporating UME into NU's appraisal system but also to making UME, which can reflect the quality of urban development in a more comprehensive and systematic way, a performance measurement tool for NU. New urbanization plays an important role in China's regional economic growth and green transformation. In this stage of high-quality economic development, the effect of the government-led new urbanization policy on reducing pollution and carbon emissions needs to be verified. Based on the data of 180 prefecture-level cities in China from 2004 to 2020, this paper built a difference-indifferences model from the two dimensions of ' pollution' and ' carbon emission' to empirically test the effect of the reduction of pollution and carbon emissions in new urbanization and its influencing mechanisms. The results showed that: (J) The new urbanization construction had a significant effect of reducing pollution and carbon emissions, which was characterized by its annual increase. The conclusion was still robust after validity and robustness tests. © Based on the ' location-feature-scale' dimensional urban heterogeneity, the effect of the reduction of pollution and carbon emissions was more significant in the samples of eastern cities, non-resource-based cities, cities with high human capital, and larger cities. Quantile estimation results showed that this effect in the new urbanization construction was increasing marginally. © Mechanism analysis showed that the new urbanization construction could not only directly promote the reduction of pollution and carbon emissions, but also effectively promote this reduction by fostering the overall upgrading of industrial structure, service structure, and performance-based technological innovation. However, the impact of input-based technological innovation on this reduction was not obvious. This article offers new ideas for the next stage of regional pollution control in China. It is suggested that the government should promote the synergy between the new urbanization and the reduction of pollution and carbon emissions and release the dividends of the new urbanization in regional green development in a more effective way with the help of industrial structure upgrading and performance-based technological innovation. Rapid urbanization has significantly impacted the structure of ecosystem services, accelerating the pressure on natural resources and ecological space. The clarification of the interdependent relationship between new-type urbanization (NTU) and ecosystem services (ESs) has contributed to ecological conservation and high-quality co-ordinated development, in contrast to traditional urbanization. This study focuses on the counties in Shaanxi Province as the research subjects, develops a new urbanization evaluation model for county-level areas, and utilizes Section data at the county level in Shaanxi Province for the years 2000, 2010, and 2020. (To analyze land cover change, we selected four data periods: 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020, to capture significant spatial trends.) This study employed the comparative analysis method and the Coupled Co-ordination Model (CCDM) to assess the correlation between traditional urbanization and the value of ecosystem services, as well as between new urbanization and the value of ecosystem services. Additionally, the study utilizes the ArcGIS platform to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of the two types of urbanization evolution and the spatiotemporal relationship between urbanization and ecosystem co-ordination. The study findings suggest the following: (1) a "low-level coordination" coupling relationship exists between traditional and new urbanization in county-level areas of Shaanxi Province and the value of ecosystem services. (2) The coupling co-ordination of traditional and new urbanization with the value of ecosystem services shows a spread of low-value areas in space, leading to a pattern of low disorder assimilation and significant spatial aggregation. (3) From 2000 to 2020, traditional and new urbanization in various counties of Shaanxi Province consistently exhibited a steady increase, with spatial patterns of "Guanzhong region > Northern Shaanxi region > Southern Shaanxi region". Both types of urbanization have displayed a "low-level coupling" with ecosystem services. (4) During the same period, the new urbanization index in different counties of Shaanxi Province showed a steady increase, demonstrating an advantage of Guanzhong. Its impact on the ecosystem was significantly weaker than that of traditional urbanization. (5) The development of new urbanization can be more effectively co-ordinated with ecosystem services compared to traditional urbanization. However, currently, its co-ordination with the ecosystem service system is relatively poor. The study's results suggest that enhancing new urbanization from multiple dimensions is beneficial for promoting the integrated coherence between urbanization development and ecosystem service systems. Accelerating the construction of transportation networks has become an important bridge to promote the urbanization of heritage tourism destinations. Based on the development dilemma of tourism towns in northwestern China, this study collected the panel data of 10 cities in Shaanxi Province from 2006 to 2019 and used a panel error correction model to investigate the long-term and short-term relationships between heritage tourism and new urbanization. In addition, this paper establishes a regression model of the transportation network's regulatory effect, revealing the extent of the impact of the transportation network on heritage tourism and new urbanization. The results show that (1) in the short term, the influence of heritage tourism on new urbanization is not remarkable, but in the long term, heritage tourism plays a positive role in facilitating new urbanization; (2) the short-term contribution elasticity of new urbanization to heritage tourism is less than that in the long term; (3) the regulatory effect of the transportation network rectifies the deviation caused by overdeveloped urbanization to moderate development in heritage tourism destinations. This article took 11 provincial capital cities in the west from 2005 to 2018 as the evaluation objects, used the entropy method to evaluate the level of new urbanization and ecological civilization, and used the coupling coordination degree model and relative development degree model to explore their coordinated development and lag status, providing theoretical sup‐ port for further promoting the coordinated development of the two. Results show that: (1) the new urbanization construction of provincial capital cities in western China is in the exploratory stage, and the characteristics of rising fluctuation and space-time differentiation are particularly obvious. The scores of cities in southwest China are generally higher than those in northwest China and the middle reaches of the Yellow River; (2) There is a big gap in the level of ecological civilization construction in provincial capitals, which basically develops in a fluctuating manner. There is a big gap in the level of ecological civilization construction among different regions, and the development level and development law of neighboring cities are close to each other; (3) There is a close coupling relationship between new urbanization and ecological civilization at a high level, but the coordinated development generally fails to achieve good or highquality coordination of mutual promotion; There is an alternating lag between the new urbanization and ecological civilization in most cities, and the lag tends to continue and intensify. In the future, we should focus on guiding the development of cities with relatively weak development foundation, narrow the differences between regions, and strengthen the coordinated construction of new urbanization and ecological civilization from the perspective of strategic goal orientation. The coupling coordination relationship between regional highway transportation and new urbanization is an increasingly important issue in the field of regional sustainable development. This paper aims to establish an index system and develop an integrated method to measure the coupling coordination between regional highway transportation and new urbanization. The evaluation index system comprised two hierarchies, six aspects and 19 indexes, which were weighted by the entropy weight method (EWM). Furthermore, a coupling degree model (CDM) and a coupling coordination degree model (CCDM) were established based on the statistical data from 2011 to 2017 in Heilongjiang Province, China. The ArcGIS spatial analysis method was utilized to analyze the spatial–temporal coupling evolution characteristics of the two subsystems. The findings revealed that the development level of the two subsystems showed an upward tendency. The coupling degree between the two subsystems was leaping from antagonistic stage to breaking-in period. The coupling coordination degree between the two subsystems was the transition stage from imbalance to coordination. Specifically, the spatial differentiation characteristics of the coupling coordination development between the two subsystems were prominent in Heilongjiang Province, China. The results showed that the approach combining CCDM with ArcGIS spatial analysis can be applied as an effective method to explore the spatial–temporal evolution of coupling coordination development. This study evaluates the new urbanization (NU) quality and the ecological resilience (ER) of 33 districts and counties in the Urban Agglomeration of Central Guizhou from 2010 to 2020. For this purpose, we used a modified coupled coordination degree (CCD) model, spatial autocorrelation analysis, and trend surface analysis to analyze the spatiotemporal evolutionary characteristics of the CCD of NU and ER. Meanwhile, we used a modified gravity model and social network analysis to investigate the spatial connection network (SCN) characteristics of the CCD of NU and ER. The results show that (1) the general NU quality has increased significantly in the Urban Agglomeration of Central Guizhou. There is, however, a downward trend in ER. (2) For the CCD of NU and ER in the Urban Agglomeration of Central Guizhou, there is coupling dissonance, with a double U-shaped arc, characterized by west > north > south > east > central. (3) The network density increases and then decreases. Network connectivity is 1, and network efficiency decreases and then increases. (4) During the study period, the SCN is characterized by significant core–edge characteristics; there are no “island nodes” in the SCN.

With the advancement of urbanization and the continuous deepening of reforms in urban–rural systems, China’s urbanization process has entered a new era of integrated urban–rural integration. Currently, as a global “new green revolution” gains momentum, numerous countries are deeply integrating the concept of sustainable development into new urban planning. Against this backdrop, urban planners worldwide are committed to building green, livable, and smart cities that can meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs, thus achieving the vision of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. Characteristic towns, leveraging their resource advantages, play a significant role in achieving sustainable regional economic development. They serve as valuable references for China’s urban transformation and upgrading, as well as for promoting rural urbanization, and are crucial avenues for advancing China’s urban–rural integration development strategy. The evaluation of the development level of characteristic towns is a necessary step in their progress and a strong guarantee for promoting their construction and development. Therefore, effectively evaluating the social benefits of characteristic towns is paramount. This study constructs an evaluation model based on the grey rough set theory and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution of TOPSIS. Firstly, an evaluation index system for the development level of characteristic towns is established. Then, the grey relational analysis method and rough set theory are used to reduce the index attributes, while the conditional information entropy theory is introduced to determine the weights of the reduced indicators. Finally, the TOPSIS model is applied to evaluate the development level of characteristic towns. Through empirical research, eight characteristic towns in Zhejiang Province, China, were assessed and ranked, verifying the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed model.

Scientific quantitative measurement of the coupling relationship between urban population (UP) and urban land (UL) is conducive to promoting intensive land use, coordinated human–land development, and new urbanization development. This research proposed an improved coupling model of polar coordinates to study the spatiotemporal coupling characteristics between UP and UL at the prefecture-level city scale in China from 2010 to 2020. The study results include the following: (1) The growth rate of UL in China’s prefecture-level cities was higher than that of UP. The per capita urban land (PUL) was always within the ideal range, and the dynamic human–land coupling state remained reasonable. (2) The UP, UL, and dynamic human–land coupling rationality in China showed characteristics that were high in the east and low in the west. The PUL showed characteristics that were high in the northwest and low in the southeast. (3) This study divided China’s prefecture-level cities into four regions according to the coupling characteristics and formulated regionally differentiated optimization strategies. In summary, this study carried out a more scientific and reasonable quantitative measurement of the coupling relationship between UP and UL in China, resulting in a more reliable and targeted formulation of optimization strategies.

Transport infrastructure plays a crucial role in facilitating the high-quality development of new urbanization. Based on the provincial panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2013 to 2020, this study empirically analyzed the impact and mechanism of transportation infrastructure on the high-quality development of new urbanization from multiple perspectives. The results showed that transportation infrastructure can significantly promote the development of new urbanization, and the promoting effect was significantly positive in the eastern and western regions, while it was positive but not significant in the central region. Transportation infrastructure can promote the development of new urbanization by promoting industrial agglomeration. When the population density is lower than the corresponding threshold value, the transport infrastructure can significantly promote the development of new urbanization; when the population density is higher than the corresponding threshold value, the transport infrastructure will significantly hinder the development of new urbanization. Transport infrastructure has a significant positive spatial spillover effect on the development of new urbanization, and the positive spatial spillover effect has been significant in the eastern, central and western regions.

China's new urbanization strategy emphasizes the need to help more people enjoy equal access to urban public services while increasing the urbanization rate. With the implementation of the new urbanization strategy, how the villagers of the original rural settlements surrounded by the urban landscape (i.e., urban villages) turn into citizens (i.e., citizenization) has attracted much attention. However, few studies have attempted to deconstruct the influence of the entire change process in urban villages on the process of villagers' citizenization by associating the fate of villagers with external urbanization. To make up for this research gap, this study took Yangji Village of Guangzhou as an example, using the theoretical framework of citizenization to analyze the process and results of citizenization of villagers from the three perspectives of identity, economy, and cultural citizenization, focusing on discussing the relationship between the changes of Yangji Village and the citizenization of villagers and the lagging problems of citizenization of villagers in urban villages to realize a deep discussion on the phenomenon of identity change of villagers in urban villages and clarify the general characteristics and special process of citizenization of urban villages. The results found that: 1) the basic path of citizenization of villagers in urban villages was that farmers acquire urban household registration and urban employment opportunities in the process of land expropriation by the government and gradually realize citizenization by integrating into the social division of labor; 2) the citizenization process of villagers in urban villages can be roughly divided into three stages: the village period, the urban village period, and community relocation period; 3) the government's land acquisition and housing rental behaviors promoted the transformation of villagers' occupation and cultural psychology, while the urban village reconstruction improved the income of the villagers, enhanced the cultural atmosphere of the community, and further promoted the citizenization process of the villagers' identity, occupation, and culture; 4) the reconstruction of urban villages boosted the citizenization process of villagers on the whole. However, the citizenization of villagers was not only the transformation of living space behind the transformation but also affected by the location of urban villages, village collective cadres, external social environment, individual subjective initiatives, and others. The realization of citizenization requires villagers to have a real sense of citizenship, change their way of life, and discard unreasonable traditional ideas. In this process, the government should establish an effective social security mechanism to help land-lost farmers enjoy the same rights as urban citizens regarding employment, social security, housing, education, and other aspects. In addition, community activities or modern media should help less-educated villagers accept the new culture, improve their ideological quality, realize the institutional and normative nature of urban civilization, and enhance their awareness of public services.

With the requirements of a high-quality development strategy, new urbanization also takes high quality as the development goal. This paper utilizes Henan Province as the spatial research carrier to screen and construct a model for urbanization high-quality development and ecological and culturally coordinated development. Comprehensive use of ArcGIS spatial analysis, coupled coordination degree model, synchronicity model and Markov chain and other methods and other methods of the main system, to analyze the regional differences in the level of high-quality and coordinated development of urbanization in Henan Province and the spatial evolution process. It also explores the evolutionary characteristics and functional interaction between urbanization and ecological culture in Henan from the perspective of high-quality development. The results show that the level of urbanization in Henan Province under the integration of ecological culture has been steadily increasing, but there is a large gap between the urbanization levels of various regions. Significant differences exist between the high-quality synergistic development of urbanization in Zhengzhou at the highest level of 0.7782 in the 2022 time period and the low level of only 0.33. This study can provide corresponding policy recommendations for the high-quality development of urbanization in Henan Province, as well as a reference for other provinces with similar urbanization processes as Henan Province.
