Abstract The concept of mixed-use is now well-established as an urban design and planning principle that adds to the vitality, walkability and productivity of the city at neighbourhood scale. There is much less research on the dense and complex vertical mix of functions within buildings. This paper investigates the extremes of informal vertical mixing of functions within buildings in Dhaka, where commercial and retail functions often penetrate to upper floors and where access routes are often mixed with residential functions. A modified form of space syntax analysis is used to analyse and critique the mix of circulation patterns and functions in 15 complex mixed-use buildings. The plans and relational diagrams reveal how different functions are mixed or separated, and the relative spatial depth they penetrate from the street. Five primary circulation diagrams emerge with different degrees of informality in different districts of the city. Under conditions of informal adaptation, vertical functional mix produces benefits in the form of synergies but also problems of privacy and security. To engage effectively planners need a complex understanding of the interrelated spatial, social and economic logics involved.

- Abstract
In the oeuvre of architect James Frazer Stirling, his collaboration with Michael Wilford on three museum designs in Germany from the mid-1970s onwards stands out clearly. Compared to his earlier works, which were characterised by assemblages of components and functional elements, these projects show a clear change in his working method. The competition entries for the Nordrhein-Westfalen-Museum in Düsseldorf (1975), the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne (1975) and the subsequent realisation of the Neue Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart (1984) demonstrate a new approach. This body of work provides a hypothesis regarding the methodology used in these three designs. The working method is characterised by the transformation of architectural typologies based on a reproducible scheme. In short, the three designs can be described as a sculptural collage of transformed typologies. Through digital modelling and analysis, the typologies used in these buildings are identified and Stirling’s method explained. To assess the replicability and effectiveness of Stirling’s methodology, a case study will be conducted on a digitally remodelled part of Piranesi’s Campo Marzio - the Campo Agrippae. This architectural landscape provides an ideal test site due to its composition, which is rich in classical typologies. The resulting analysis will shed light on the impact, challenges, potential applications, and extension possibilities of the methodology. Building on the findings from the previous sections, this thesis will explore possibilities for modifying, redesigning, and extending Stirling’s original methodology. To this end, it will be applied to the creation of a design for a mixed-use building in Liverpool Harbour. This practical application will illustrate the adaptability and versatility of the methodology in contemporary architectural contexts., Alexander Simon Kaiser, Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 2024

Information on the mixed use of buildings helps understand the status of mixed-use urban vertical land and assists in urban planning decisions. Although a few studies have focused on this topic, the methods they used are quite complex and require manual intervention in extracting different function patterns of buildings, while building recognition rates remain unsatisfying. In this paper, we propose a new method to infer the mixed use of buildings based on a tensor decomposition algorithm, which integrates information from both high-resolution remote sensing images and social sensing data. We selected the Tianhe District of Guangzhou, China to validate our method. The results show that the recognition rate of buildings can reach 98.67%, with an average recognition accuracy of 84%. Our study proves that the tensor decomposition algorithm can extract different function patterns of buildings unsupervised, while remote sensing data can provide key information for inferring building functions. The tensor decomposition-based method can serve as an effective and efficient way to infer the mixed use of buildings, which can achieve better results with simpler steps.

- Abstract
Coordinated approaches between datacenter and non-datacenter loads in buildings to achieve energy efficiency have been widely studied in recent years. However, the coordination-enabled mechanisms still leave much room to be optimized for the following reasons. First, in the new trend of cloud computing networks, datacenters are pushed to the edge of networks to reduce latency (they are called edge datacenters). Such datacenters are often deployed in geographically distributed buildings and collocated with offices in terms of sharing building infrastructure; such buildings are called geo-distributed mixed-use buildings (MUBs). That scenario has not been well addressed in terms of energy sustainability requirements overall in the buildings; the requirements are imposed either by mandatory government orders or by LEED certification. Second, one critical issue of datacenters is water saving, which is rarely associated with energy efficiency, even though every kilowatt of energy consumption can reflect exactly an amount of water use in datacenters. Therefore, in this paper, we aim to find a solution for joint energy scheduling and water saving problem ($\mathbf {P_{JEW}}$) in a coordinated manner between MUBs. The solution is designed to schedule workloads by coupling edge datacenters collocated in buildings as well as to control energy and water usage to minimize the system cost caused by reducing loads. We advocate the model predictive control to schedule the whole system in a time horizon. Multiple simulation scenarios are evaluated to show the efficiency of our proposed methods compared to conventional approaches. The results reveal that our mechanism outperforms the uncoordinated methods and achieves a nearly optimal solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

San Francisco neighborhood in Bucaramanga stands out due to its commercial activity related to the footwear and textile industry, because, thanks to its location, it turns out to be a central area in which areas of mixed activities converge. Consequently, the sector is affected by the multiple activities and uses that are carried out inside, as a result of disorderly urban planning that does not respond to its complexity, making it necessary to organize functional spaces in the sector that host activities without generating disorder or obstruction of the road, designed for the comfort and well-being of the user. Therefore, the architectural design of a mixed-use building is proposed that aims to unify the commercial use of the sector operated through a vertical architecture, obtaining as a result a maximum liberation of the soil that will be used optimally in the design of recreational spaces accessible to all. It will start with an analysis and ordering of the information on the determinants of the sector, to obtain the critical points and their strengths, to later carry out an investigation on the pertinent bioclimatic and sustainable strategies, which in addition to reducing design costs and maintenance, provide friendly spaces for both the sector and the environment. - Abstract
While a mixture of residential and non-residential uses in urban development has advantages in reducing transportation energy consumption and improving efficiency of land utilization, the patterns of energy consumption in mixed-use buildings are largely unknown. To understand associations between the built environment and energy consumption and to find effective strategies for energy saving, this study aims to examine how the gas and electricity energy consumption of mixed-use properties is influenced by the characteristics of the immediate surroundings of the building as well as by the building's attributes. The sample for this study is 22,109 mixed-use buildings in Seoul, Korea and the main source of outcome is electricity and gas energy consumption data retrieved from the open system of building data in 2015 and 2016. The regression results showed that a higher proportion of non-residential uses in mixed-use buildings was positively associated with higher electricity consumption overall but that it reduced gas energy use during the winter. In particular, increased restaurant and service use significantly influenced electricity consumption in the buildings. With regard to surrounding built environment, higher impervious surfaces and dense development near the buildings increased the electricity consumption of the buildings but it reduced gas energy consumption. Our results imply that, through the mediating effects of UHIs, the built environment characteristics of immediate surroundings may have indirect effects on energy consumption in mixed-use buildings. This paper is based on the research "The physical potential of a row house and town house in Phitsanulok to support a self-reliant lifestyle as guided by the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy". The research surveyed and studied the physical ability of row houses and town houses in urban areas. Based on the series of former researches on self-reliant of several types of existing houses, this research continues to study a mixed-use building of row house and town house. The research actually expects to get a result that shows low level of self-reliant in all basic categories. However, not only surpluses can be found from production in both energy and water for gardening, it has also proven to be able to produce enough vegetable to comfortably satisfy a family with two people on its available open areas. The findings of this research put into focus the ability of a row house and town house of being a great mixed-use building, not only for living, working, but also producing life's essentials as well. - Abstract
Every city has its most important place for citizens to promote informal sociability and urban connection with humans. The riverside is the most important urban connection in Pittsburgh. Each side of the bridge has a different development level. The design of the riverside pedestrian path can build a connection between both sides of the bridge and help urban development in the north side of Pittsburgh. The aim of the study is to analyze the connection between architectural open space, pedestrian trails, and riverway trails and to propose methods that are suitable for developing a mixed-use building that will help improve the relationship between the buildings and the urban context. The study will help develop new strategies for urban design that connects each part of the city.

The subject of this graduate qualification work is «Mixed-use public building on the riverbank of Smolenka in St. Petersburg » The work’s objective is to form the development concept and to elaborate the construction project’s documentation for the land plots at Beringa St., 29. Building information modeling, as the most modern and progressive technology for today, was used during the project design. As part of the work, urban analysis of the territory was carried out. Problems of public spaces of coastal zones outside the historical center, in particular of Smolenka River, were defined. The conclusion was drawn that the site’s development is advisable with a creation of a public garden, serving as a buffer green zone. The way to automate transition stages towards 4D and 5D BIM on the example of in situ concrete works was proposed with the cost and time binding demonstration. Based on the analysis of world practice and modern approaches to BIM design, the role of model elements’ classification was determined. An example of classification structure use to automate design processes was described. The proposed methodology for working with information model and databases through applied programming can be used in assessing the cost and time indicators of an investment and construction project.

Tyrimo rezultatas – suprojektuotas mišrios paskirties pastatas Vilniaus Naujamiestyje. Šiame pastate numatyta gyvenamoji ir visuomeninė funkcijos. Jos užtikrina nuolatinį žmonių srautą, kuris didina individų socialumą, saugumą bei patrauklumą komercinių veiklų... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] By analyzing buildings it is easy to decide what the social group life style, values and aspirations are. To judge architecture means to assess the cultural level, technological achievement and civilization progress in the direction - whether it is focused only on the current needs, or takes into account environmental sustainability and its nurturing. Recently, the relationship with the environment and people's sociability can be defined in one term - sustainability. The essence of the term lies in three concepts - sociability, ecology, cost-effectiveness (rationality) and their interconnection. Sustainable architecture promotes sociability, consciousness to the environment and does not require a lot of resources. This compound word - sustainable architecture is my thesis theme and main topic. So the study object is sustainable architecture and its application in Lithuania. The aim of this work is to explain the word sustainability in practical and theoretical means. Next step is to find irrationally used site near the city center. Finally create there a mixed-use architectural object, which may be examined in ecological, social, economic, aesthetic and contextual aspects. In all those points new structure should be significantly better than the previous one. Research result is a mixed-use building designed in the Naujamiestis district of Vilnius. This building consists of residential and public functions. These functions ensure a continuous flow of people, which increases... [to full text]

An increasing number of families with small children are now choosing to live in Stockholm’s inner city, which has led to a tremendous need for more pre-schools. The most common solution today is to use pavilions with temporary building permits where modules are assembled as required from time to time. As they provide such a flexible solution, these barracks are however often being used in a permanent manner, quite different from the interim solution they were once intended to be. Another problem that pre-schools face is that the children’s food is not cooked on location, but is instead prepared in industrial kitchens and delivered to the pre-schools. Although this is a viable solution, it does not fulfill the intended educational objective. The purpose of this project has been to design a pre-school in Stockholm’s inner city which provides a flexible option due to co-usage features. The pre-school’s kitchen also caters a restaurant which is open to the public. In the evenings, part of the children's space is used as a dance studio. This co-usage of space and function becomes the core and driving force of the project. The grounds of the pre-school are located in one corner of the park Tantolunden on Södermalm. One side of the grounds is adjacent to motor roads and railroad tracks and significant differences in level. Noise and traffic dangers are obvious. At the same time, the north side of the grounds shares an amazing park with the heritage listed Ekermanska malmgården which has existed at this site for centuries. Building in parks is controversial and the building has therefore been given the task of clarifying this site, which is currently difficult to use. By providing businesses open to the public along Ringvägen, it becomes a destination instead of merely a place of transit. By providing an extension of Ekermanska malmgården's direction, the boundaries of the park are also defined. The volume itself encloses a courtyard that becomes the children's safe haven.

The volume itself encloses a courtyard that becomes the children's safe ha

Celkově návrh polyfunkčního domu propojuje městský život centra Mikulova., This bachelor´s thesis is based on the architectural study made within studio work of subject AG033. The subject of the design is new mixed-use building in a gap site at historic centre of the Mikulov city, right below Mikulov castle and it´s castle walls. In terms of function, mixed-use building is used as an apartment building, which is divided into six apartments with size from 2+k to 4+1, including facility spaces. Next there are commerce services, which includes one commerce unit for rent, beerhouse with microbrewery, and wine bar, which uses existing wine cellar underneath the castle walls. In the back yard, there are located covered parking spaces for residents and commerce employees, which are accessible by passage. Mixed-use building is divided by architecture masses to multi-storey street section, which consist of two houses with different height, which are based on historic plots, and one-storey yard section. Street section is conceived as contemporary adaptation of traditional historic character of the city. Both houses of the street section have pitched roofs, made from ceramic roof tiles, with roof windows, which respects roof character of the Mikulov city. Facades are made of two coloured renders, which are divided by houses of the street section. Detailing of facades is made from coloured contrast lines, which are referring to traditional historical details. Yard section has flat green roofs, which helps to relieve mass from build-up area. Facades are made of brick strip tiling, which helps to fuse building with castle walls. The most prominent space is space of a wine bar, which is made on square floor plan, and it has big Czech vaulting with significant centre skylight. Whole design of mixed-use building connects city life in Mikulov city.

Objekt má 4 nadzemní a jedno podzemní podlaží. - Abstract
Hmotově navazuje a zároveň propojuje oba přilehlé objekty. Výškově, objekt vytváří mírnou lokální dominantu, avšak svou výšku potlačuje postupným uskakováním podlaží a jejich materiálovým odlíšením. To zároveň odráží funkční uspořádání podlaží. Na jižní fasádu jsou umístněný provozy, které si nejvíce vyžadují denní světlo a zároveň nebrání pronikání světla do střední části dispozice., The topic of this bachelor thesis is the design of a town house in a gap on street Hlinky. The site is located in Staré Brno. The site has an important location - the foot of the Yellow Hill, near Brněnské výstaviště. The site is a narrow rectangle with a shorter side facing the street. It is accessible from only one side. Current usage is for three automobile garages, but is mostly unused. Retaining wall crossing site, stops the slope from the north side. The designed object responds to its location with a mass and spatial solution. It tries to fill in broken street line, connects the two adjacent buildings. In terms of height, the building creates a slight local height dominant, but suppresses its height by gradual pushing in of the top floors and their material differentiation. This also reflects the usage layout of the floors. The building uses the whole site. Functionally, the building is designed as a mixed-use house with a predominant administrative function, and the secondary component is permanent housing, namely two apartments. The building thus respects the existing master plan. One of the design's priorities was natural lighting. The site allows sun tho pass to the building only from the southern and northern side. This fact was key to the mass and layout design. The layout consists of a closed narrow strip where stairs, elevator and sanitary facilities are located and an open space with a glass façade on both sides. All rooms which require daylight the most and do not prevent light from reaching central part of layout are located on the southern façade.
