Based on visual analysis of the China Pictorial magazine in two historical periods (Mao and post-Mao), this article identifies six key themes of representing Africa in Chinese state media and finds a parallel between China's representation of Africa, Sino-African relations, and the shifting geopolitics. Different from Western stereotypes about Africa, China Pictorial constructs a romanticized image of Africa, which is interpreted through the concept of the "socialist gaze." Empirically, this article explains and historicizes how China Pictorial constructs meanings about Africa through its visual representational systems, shedding new light on China–Africa relations and the increasingly active South–South media flows. Theoretically, this article expands our understanding of media representation beyond the "colonial gaze." While the "socialist gaze" may function as a counter-representation to the "colonial gaze," it can also create new differences and stereotypes, thus enhancing power asymmetry between China and Africa. The study's primary objective is to ascertain whether board of directors with multiple directorships affect Modified Audit Opinions (MAOs) and whether audit opinions with the typical number of multiple directorships in the context of Jordanian firms are statistically significant. To assess the proposed hypotheses, a cross-sectional logistic regression model was used in the study. Using the model, the associations between the independent variables and the MAO were investigated. The paper supports partial evidence of the busyness hypotheses, in that with the increase in the multiple directorships, the unmodified opinion will increase. Such evidence indicates that multiple directorships negatively and significantly affect MAO among Jordanian firms. This study has a number of possible limitations, making it similar to many empirical studies in that regard. Therefore, the following inherent limitations should be taken into consideration when applying the study's findings: The study excluded financial companies from the sample since these companies operate under specific regulations and their financial reports are unique and complicated. Therefore, it is impossible to generalize the findings of this study to these companies. Future studies might think about spanning a longer time frame. This study offers policymakers in the developing market implications for creating rules for multiple board member appointments, particularly when engaging theboard of directors. This paper has two main aims. First, it examines the relation of Russian and Chinese Marxism against its Hegelian background. Secondly, it comments on recent Western research on Marxism in tracing the origins of Engels's anti-Hegelianism to materialist reactions to modern idealist philosophy. I maintain that Engels is a Schellingian, that Marx is a Hegelian, and that Marx's form of Hegelianism cannot be realized in practice. I consider different kinds of Marxism as efforts to realize Marx's theories and argue that, since Marx's theory cannot be realized, in the final analysis his view is no more than a dream. This review article focuses on the application of microwave-assisted techniques in various processes, including microwave-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted pyrolysis, microwave-assisted acid hydrolysis, microwave-assisted organosolv, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal pretreatment. This article discusses the mechanisms behind these techniques and their potential for increasing yield, producing more selectivity, and lowering reaction times while reducing energy usage. It also highlights the advantages and disadvantages of each process and emphasizes the need for further research to scale the processes and optimize conditions for industrial applications. A specific case study is presented on the pretreatment of coffee waste, demonstrating how the choice of microwave-assisted processes can lead to different by-products depending on the initial composition of the biomass. Monoamine oxidase (MAO) are flavoenzymes that metabolize neurotransmitter, dietary and xenobiotic amines to their corresponding aldehydes with the production of hydrogen peroxide. Two isoforms, MAO-A and MAO-B, are expressed in humans and mammals, and display different substrate and inhibitor specificities as well as different physiological roles. MAO inhibitors are of much therapeutic value and are used for the treatment of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, and Parkinson's disease. To discover MAO inhibitors with good potencies and interesting isoform specificities, the present study synthesized a series of 2,1-benzisoxazole (anthranil) derivatives and evaluated them as in vitro inhibitors of human MAO. The compounds were in most instances specific inhibitors of MAO-B with the most potent MAO-B inhibition observed for 7a (IC50 = 0.017 µM) and 7b (IC50 = 0.098 µM). The most potent MAO-A inhibition was observed for 3l (IC50 = 5.35 µM) and 5 (IC50 = 3.29 µM). It is interesting to note that 3-(2-aminoethoxy)-1,2-benzisoxazole derivatives, the 1,2-benzisoxazole, zonisamide, as well as the isoxazole compound, leflunomide, have been described as MAO inhibitors. In order to improve the comprehensive performance of TC11 titanium alloy and make it more widely used in the field of oil and gas wells, cobalt oxide micro‐powder from 0 to 0.8 g·L−1 was added in the electrolyte. The effects of cobalt oxide micro‐powder concentration on properties of micro‐arc oxidation (MAO) coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical workstation. With cobalt oxide micro‐powder increased, the oxide voltage increased, and the discharge coating micropores became more uniform. The increase in thickness and hardness also improved corrosion resistance. The comprehensive performance after added 0.6 g·L−1 of cobalt oxide was the best, with a doubling increase in thickness and hardness, reaching 32.1 µm and 721.2 HV, respectively. The corrosion rate reduced to 4.19 × 10−10 mm·a−1, which reduced by three orders of magnitude. In addition, the substrates and samples prepared with 0.6 g·L−1 cobalt oxidation were used for the erosion corrosion tests in different NaCl solutions, and it was found that the weight loss and rate of the MAO sample (slight corrosion) were lower than substrates, indicating that the cobalt oxide doped coatings had better corrosion resistance. This study investigates the enhancement of surface properties in TiO2-based coatings on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy through micro-arc oxidation (MAO), employing stevia sugar as a novel additive. By incorporating stevia sugar into acetate–glycerophosphate–tetraethoxysilane solutions used in MAO treatment, the porous morphology of TiO2-based oxide layers is regulated. The incorporation of stevia moderates plasma discharge intensity, facilitating the formation of a uniform silicon-rich structure characterized by reduced porosity and pore size. This effect is attributed to the interaction between stevia and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), which modifies the TEOS hydrolysis process, thereby enhancing structural uniformity and stability while concurrently reducing plasma discharge intensity. Additionally, theoretical calculations offer a valuable understanding of the reactivity and interactions of stevia, TEOS, and their complex during the MAO process, laying the groundwork for further research and optimization in this promising field. Mao wine is produced from mao (Antidesma thwaitesianum) and is a local beverage promoting Sakon Nakhon province, Thailand. Understanding the fermentation process is necessary in order to enhance the quality of mao wine products. This study aims to examine the kinetics of mao wine fermentation using 3 commercial types of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts, namely Lalvin 71B, Lalvin RC212 and Lalvin K1- V1116, with an initial pH of 3.4, a sweetness of 22 % Brix and a yeast concentration of 0.4 g L-1 in controlled conditions at 25 °C for 10 days. The results revealed that the kinetic models, including logistic, Luedeking-Piret and modified Luedeking-Piret equations, are appropriate for analyzing the kinetics of yeast growth, alcohol production and reducing sugar, respectively. Lalvin K1-V1116 yeast yielded the highest capacity for alcohol production (~113 g L-1), sugar-to-alcohol conversion (45 % conversion), and product efficiency (88 %), indicating its suitability for mao wine production. Furthermore, the investigation of the alpha-amylase inhibitory activity revealed that the IC50 values of mao wine samples were 2.88 - 4.78 mg mL-1, which were roughly 410 - 680 times greater than those of acarbose. These findings revealed the low efficacy of mao wine in inhibiting alpha-amylase activity. Nevertheless, a decrease in the level of inhibition may result in a decreased likelihood of side effects or undesirable reactions. This treatment is especially beneficial for people who have medication sensitivities. Additional research is required in order to substantiate its applicability in the management of type 2 diabetes. Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) is widely applied to improve the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys by forming a ceramic passivation film on their surface. The high cohesive strength and randomly distributed micro-porous structure of MAO films have significantly expanded their operation scope, serving as the base or bonding layer for composite or multi-functional coatings. However, mechanical scratches or impacts during installation and service periods can damage the protective performance of MAO films, leading to local corrosion or the rapid loss of mechanical integrity in Mg alloys. Therefore, the development of MAO coatings with self-healing properties has been extensively studied in recent decades. This paper aims to illustrate the gaps between the anti-corrosion characteristics and self-repairing mechanisms dependent on the oxide composition or porous structure of MAO films. The progress in preparation and the principle of inhibitor loading in self-healing functional MAO-based composite coatings are summarized, and future directions are highlighted. 4-(2-Methyloxazol-4-yl)benzenesulfonamide was synthesized by the reaction of 4-(2-bromoacetyl)benzenesulfonamide with an excess of acetamide. The compound was evaluated as a potential inhibitor of human monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B and was found to inhibit these enzymes with IC50 values of 43.3 and 3.47 μM, respectively. The potential binding orientation and interactions of the inhibitor with MAO-B were examined by molecular docking, and it was found that the sulfonamide group binds and interacts with residues of the substrate cavity. 4-(2-Methyloxazol-4-yl)benzenesulfonamide showed no cytotoxic effect against human stromal bone cell line (HS-5) in the concentration range of 1–100 µmol. The paper introduces the transhumanism and cosmic communism of Mao Zedong and discusses its relation to a Marxian conception of human nature and analogous Soviet visions. Having shown that the two-sided understanding of human nature in Marx opened doors for its transhumanist interpretations, the article identifies instances of the latter in the ideal of the New Soviet Man, the views of Trotsky, and the communist (or at least Sovietized) cosmism of Tsiolkovsky and Bogdanov. In parallel to and prior to his contact with Marxism, Mao became occupied with the problems of immortality, alternative spaces, the destruction of the Earth, and the power of human will, and his early transhumanism only revived after 1949. It is shown that based on his revision of historical materialism and belief in the limitless potential of human powers, Mao envisaged that technological and cultural revolutions would still and endlessly occur under communism(s), including their cosmic phases, and even after a global nuclear catastrophe. This would be, however, a future of “something more advanced” than humans, free from their current physical limitations.

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa Korth) is a tropical plant originating from Southeast Asia that predominantly contains alkaloid compounds and can potentially maintain levels of monoamine compounds in the body to treat depression. The study aimed to examine the potential of 8 alkaloid compounds in kratom as antidepressants towards four target proteins: Serotonin Transporter (SERT), Dopamine Transporter (DOPAT), Leucine Transporter (LEUT), and Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) via molecular docking. The Pyrx program is used with exhaustiveness 106 as the protocol, and the grid is adapted to the active site of each receptor. The affinity values ​​of the alkaloid compounds in kratom are mitragynine, 7-hydroxy mitragynine, speciociliatine, paynantheine, speciogynine, corynantheidine, mitraciliatine, and 9-hydroxycorynantheidine, for MAO were -7.1, -6.1, -5.7, -6.7, -5.7, -7.7, -5.7, and -5.7 kcal/ mole. All compounds bind to amino acid residues in the target protein through hydrogen and pi (π) bonds. All the tested alkaloid compounds have the potential to be re-uptake inhibitors SERT, DOPAT, LEUT, and Monoamine Oxidase (MAO).

Depression is one of the most prevalent severe CNS disorders, which negatively affects social lives, the ability to work, and the health of people. As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is a psychological disorder that is estimated to be a leading disease by 2030. Clinically, various medicines have been formulated to treat depression but they are having a setback due to their side effects, slow action, or poor bioavailability. Nowadays, flavonoids are regarded as an essential component in a variety of nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and medicinal. Isoflavones are a distinctive and important subclass of flavonoids that are generally obtained from soybean, chickpeas, and red clover. The molecules of this class have been extensively explored in various CNS disorders including depression and anxiety. Isoflavones such as genistein, daidzein, biochanin-A, formononetin, and glycitein have been reported to exert an anti-depressant effect through the modulation of different mediators. Fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) mediated depletion of anandamide and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis-mediated modulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), monoamine oxidase (MAO) mediated depletion of biogenic amines and inflammatory signaling are the important underlying pathways leading to depression. Upregulation in the levels of BDNF, anandamide, antioxidants and monoamines, along with inhibition of MAO, FAAH, HPA axis, and inflammatory stress are the major modulations produced by different isoflavones in the observed anti-depressant effect. Therefore, the present review has been designed to explore the mechanistic interplay of various mediators involved in mediating the anti-depressant action of different isoflavones. The monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes metabolize neurotransmitter amines in the peripheral and central tissues, and inhibitors of these enzymes find application in the treatment of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Based on reports that the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) inhibitor, 7-nitroindazole, inhibits the MAO-B isoform, the present study investigated the MAO inhibition potencies of a synthetic series of fifteen C5- and C6-substituted indazole derivatives. While only one derivative (5c) was a submicromolar inhibitor of human MAO-A (IC50 = 0.745 µM), all compounds inhibited human MAO-B with submicromolar IC50 values. Substitution on C5 of indazole yielded particularly potent MAO-B inhibition with IC50 values that ranged from 0.0025–0.024 µM. Further investigation of a selected indazole derivative showed a competitive mode of MAO inhibition. To further explore the pharmacological properties of the indazole derivatives, they were also evaluated as potential inhibitors of porcine D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO). None of the synthetic compounds were noteworthy DAAO inhibitors, however, 1H-indazol-5-ol, a synthetic precursor, was found to be a good potency inhibitor with an IC50 value of 2.03 µM. National functions are categories of operations prioritised for restoration when disrupted by emergencies such as disasters. However, the simultaneous restoration of all national functions when some or all are paralysed is limited by time and resources. Delays in the restoration of key functions can lead to public dissatisfaction. Thus, it is necessary to broadly classify national functions and analyse their restoration priorities based on criticality. This study identifies 19 national functions from Republic of Korea's comprehensive Business Reference Model. A survey was conducted among citizens and officials to determine the criticality of each function. Statistical analyses verified the consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.860) and correlation (average Cramer's V = 0.107) of the criticality responses across regions. The null hypothesis of no regional differences in the criticality of national functions was accepted, validating their universality. Restoration priorities were derived from these criticality values, with 'Disaster Safety Response' as the highest priority and 'Regional Development' as the lowest. These results provide foundational data for the post-disaster restoration priorities of national functions and emphasise the need to consider public opinion, needs, and government resource limitations in disaster management planning. Abstract Background Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) promote neuroinflammation and, thus, central nervous system (CNS) disease progression. However, it remains unclear whether CNS-associated NETs affect pain outcomes. A fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) alleviates neurological disorders by attenuating neuroinflammation and promoting nerve regeneration. Hence, in this study, we explore the role of NETs in the CNS during acute pain and investigate the role of FMD in inhibiting NETs and relieving pain. Methods The inflammatory pain model was established by injecting complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) into the hind paw of mice. The FMD diet regimen was performed during the perioperative period. PAD4 siRNA or CI-amidine (PAD4 inhibitor) was used to inhibit the formation of NETs. Monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) knockdown occurred by AAV-GFAP-shRNA or AAV-hSyn-shRNA or was inhibited by selegiline (an MAO-B inhibitor). The changes in NETs, neuroinflammation, and related signaling pathways were examined by western blot, immunofluorescence, ELISA, and flow cytometry. Results In the acute phase of inflammatory pain, NETs accumulate in the spinal cords of mice. This is associated with exacerbated neuroinflammation. Meanwhile, inhibition of NETs formation alleviates allodynia and neuroinflammation in CFA mice. FMD inhibits NETs production and alleviates inflammatory pain, which is enhanced by treatment with the NETs inhibitor CI-amidine, and reversed by treatment with the NETs inducer phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). Mechanistically, the neutrophil-recruiting pathway MAO-B/5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) / G-protein-coupled receptor 35 (GPR35) and NETs-inducing pathway MAO-B/ Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are significantly upregulated during the development of inflammatory pain. MAO-B is largely expressed in astrocytes and neurons in the spinal cords of CFA mice. However, knockdown or inhibition of MAO-B effectively attenuates CFA-induced inflammatory pain, NETs formation, and neuroinflammation in the spinal cord. Moreover, within rescue experiments, MAO-B inhibitors synergistically enhance FMD-induced pain relief, NETs inhibition, and neuroinflammation attenuation, whereas supplementation with MAO-B downstream molecules (i.e., 5-HIAA and PMA) abolished this effect. Conclusions Neutrophil-released NETs in the spinal cord contribute to pain development. The first ever synthesis of complexes [PdLCl2] (I) and [PdLBr2] (II) was successfully achieved, where L = 2,6-dimethyl-4-nitro-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethylildene)aniline, a ligand with a purported ability to inhibit monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). To gain insight into the molecular structure of complexes I and II, as well as the ligand precursor 2,6-dimethyl-4-nitroaniline L4 (CIF files CCDC nos. 2255106 (I), 2255105 (II), 2255103 (L), 2255104 (L4)), X-ray diffraction analysis was utilized. Complex I underwent further characterization to determine its stability, solubility, and lipophilicity. Background: Based on evidence there are accepted links among early nutrition, epigenetic processes, and cognitive performance. Almond as a nutritious food could exert neuroprotective effects and improve anxiety, learning, and memory. Methods: In the current study, female rats were fed with a diet containing 5% (w/w) almonds during the mating period (two days) and gestation period (21 consecutive days). Then, the effect of the almond diet on short-term memory (Y maze), anxiety (elevated plus maze), and stress adaptation (forced swimming test) were investigated in the adult male offspring. The hippocampus (HIP), prefrontal cortex (PFC), and amygdala (AMY) of offspring were collected, and the level of cyclic AMP response element-binding proteins (CREB), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was assessed by western blotting. Also, Monoamine oxidases (MAO)-A and B activity were evaluated via enzymatic assays. Results: Our results indicated that prenatal almond consumption improved memory, made a modest reduction in anxiety-like behavior, and increased stress adaptation in adult male offspring. Also, molecular assessments showed an increased level of CREB phosphorylation and BDNF in the HIP and PFC of the almond group, while the activity of MAO-A and MAO-B was inhibited by almond consumption in mentioned areas. Discussion: These findings introduce almonds as a beneficial diet during pregnancy, for improving short-term memory, stress adaptation, and cognitive performance in adult offspring. Marine algae are valuable sources of health-promoting molecules that have been consumed by Asians for decades. Among aquatic flora, marine algae stand out in terms of high content of marine algae polysaccharides (MAP) such as carrageenan, alginate, fucoidan, laminaran, agarose, rhamnan, and ulvan. When hydrolyzed, MAP generate marine algae oligosaccharides (MAO), which have attracted interest in recent years due to their superior solubility compared with MAP. Besides, MAO have been demonstrated numerous biological activities including antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and prebiotic activities. Thus, this review summarizes the main chemical classes of MAO, their sources, and the main processes used for their production (i.e., physical, chemical, and biological methods), coupled with a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of these methods. Highlights of the biological activities of MAO and their potential applications in food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceuticals would also be discussed and summarized.

A simple and environment‐friendly method was designed to prepare superhydrophobic (SHP) surface on Mg‐Li alloy by the combination of microarc oxidation and a subsequent hexadecyltrimethoxysilane modification. In the coating, a low‐energy surface with rough structure was successfully synthesized, resulting in a high contact angle of 163.1° and a superior corrosion resistance. The high corrosion resistance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of superhydrophobicity and physical barrier ability of SHP coating. Although Al‐Mg‐Sc alloy was widely applied to aviation aerospace field, they were vulnerable to local corrosion and wear in the process of long‐term service in severe environmental conditions. In this paper, micro‐arc oxidation (MAO) ceramic films on Al‐Mg‐Sc alloy substrate were prepared in electrolyte solutions with different Na2SiO3 concentrations, and the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the MAO samples were studied. The experimental results of potentiodynamic polarization (PDS) and long‐term immersion tests indicated that the MAO ceramic film prepared in 10 g/L Na2SiO3 electrolyte solution had the best corrosion resistance, as manifested by no obvious cracks, serious collapse and corrosion products on the sample surface and no deep cracks and corrosion paths in the cross‐sectional area. The increase of Na2SiO3 concentration in electrolyte solution also improved the wear resistance of MAO ceramic film, as manifested by low wear depth (10 μm)and width (1 mm) of the MAO ceramic film prepared in 10 g/L Na2SiO3 electrolyte solution against GCr15 steel ball. Studies in mechanisms suggested that as the Na2SiO3 concentration in the electrolyte increased, the MAO ceramic film became denser, which could prevent the penetration of corrosive medium, promote the generation of the anti‐wear layer with SiO2 as the main component to enhance the wear resistance. MAO ceramic film formed in Na2SiO3 electrolyte solution provided good protective performance for Al‐Mg‐Sc alloy in the corrosion and wear conditions, which had a broader application prospect. The treatment of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders such as depression and Parkinson's disease represent significant challenges in healthcare. Enzymes that metabolise neurotransmitter amines are important drug targets for these disorders and inhibitors of these enzymes have played key roles as therapeutic agents. For example, inhibitors of monoamine oxidase (MAO) A have been used for decades as antidepressant agents and act by inhibiting the central metabolism of serotonin and noradrenaline, while MAO-B inhibitors conserve central dopamine supply and have been used to treat Parkinson's disease. Literature reports that benzoxathiolone derivatives act as potent MAO inhibitors with specificity for the MAO-B isoform. To expand on these findings, the present study synthesised series of benzoxathiolone derivatives and investigated their human MAO inhibition properties. The results showed that the benzoxathiolone derivatives were potent MAO inhibitors, with the most potent compounds exhibiting IC50 values of 0.083 and 0.086 µM (4d and 5e) and 0.0069 and 0.0066 µM (3a and 3b) for MAO-A and MAO-B, respectively. Compounds 4d and 5e are significantly more potent MAO-A inhibitors compared to those reported previously. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. It increases the risk of other serious diseases and causes a huge impact on individuals, families, and socioeconomics. AD is a complex multifactorial disease, and current pharmacological therapies are largely based on the inhibition of enzymes involved in the pathogenesis of AD. Natural enzyme inhibitors are the potential sources for targeting AD treatment and are mainly collected from plants, marine organisms, or microorganisms. In particular, microbial sources have many advantages compared to other sources. While several reviews on AD have been reported, most of these previous reviews focused on presenting and discussing the general theory of AD or overviewing enzyme inhibitors from various sources, such as chemical synthesis, plants, and marine organisms, while only a few reviews regarding microbial sources of enzyme inhibitors against AD are available. Currently, multi-targeted drug investigation is a new trend for the potential treatment of AD. However, there is no review that has comprehensively discussed the various kinds of enzyme inhibitors from the microbial source. This review extensively addresses the above-mentioned aspect and simultaneously updates and provides a more comprehensive view of the enzyme targets involved in the pathogenesis of AD. The emerging trend of using in silico studies to discover drugs concerning AD inhibitors from microorganisms and perspectives for further experimental studies are also covered here. A quinoline-malononitrile (QM)-based aggregation-induced emission probe was developed to detect MAOs in cells through an enzymatic reaction followed by β-elimination. After being incubated at 37 °C, QM-NH2 responded to the MAO enzymes with great specificity and within just 5 min. This 5 min responsive mechanism was fast, with the limit of detection (LOD) at 5.49 and 4.76 µg mL−1 for MAO-A and MAO-B, respectively. Moreover, QM-NH2 displayed high enzyme specificity even in the presence of high concentrations of biological interferences, such as oxidizing and reducing agents, biothiols, amino acids, and glucose. Furthermore, QM-NH2 demonstrated biocompatibility as the cells retained more than 70% viability when exposed to QM-NH2 at concentrations of up to 20 µM. As a result, QM-NH2 was used to detect MAO-A and MAO-B in SH-SY5Y and HepG2 cells, respectively. After 1h incubation with QM-NH2, the cells exhibited enhanced fluorescence by about 20-fold. Moreover, the signal from cells was reduced when MAO inhibitors were applied prior to incubating with QM-NH2. Biogenic amines are cellular components produced by the decarboxylation of amino acids; however, excessive biogenic amine production causes adverse health problems. The relationship between hepatic damage and biogenic amine levels in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. In this study, mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 10 weeks to induce obesity, presenting early-stage of NAFLD. We administered histamine (20 mg/kg) + tyramine (100 mg/kg) via oral gavage for 6 days to mice with HFD-induced early-stage NAFLD. The results showed that combined histamine and tyramine administration increased cleaved PARP-1 and IL-1β in the liver, as well as MAO-A, total MAO, CRP, and AST/ALT levels. In contrast, the survival rate decreased in HFD-induced NAFLD mice. Treatment with manufactured or traditional fermented soybean paste decreased biogenically elevated hepatic cleaved PARP-1 and IL-1β expression and blood plasma MAO-A, CRP, and AST/ALT levels in HFD-induced NAFLD mice. Additionally, the biogenic amine-induced reduction in survival rate was alleviated by fermented soybean paste in HFD-induced NAFLD mice. These results show that biogenic amine-induced liver damage can be exacerbated by obesity and may adversely affect life conservation. However, fermented soybean paste can reduce biogenic amine-induced liver damage in NAFLD mice. These results suggest a beneficial effect of fermented soybean paste on biogenic amine-induced liver damage and provide a new research perspective on the relationship between biogenic amines and obesity. 3-(3,4-Dichlorophenyl)-5-(1H-indol-5-yl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole was synthesized via the condensation of 3,4-dichlorobenzamidoxime and methyl 1H-indole-5-carboxylate using a superbasic medium (NaOH/DMSO). The compound was tested as a potential inhibitor of human monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and B. It demonstrated a notable inhibition with an IC50 value of 0.036 μM for the MAO-B and isoform specificity. The product was characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and HRMS. In conclusion, the new active MAO-B inhibitor may serve as a candidate for the future discovery of therapeutic agents for neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease. In this study, an epoxy layer was formed by the immersion process, on the oxide layer grown by the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) treatment of the AZ91 magnesium alloy, using the thin film sealing technology, and its effect on fatigue and tensile stress under high cycle conditions was investigated. The microstructures of the AZ91 base material, MAO/AZ91 and MAO-epoxy/AZ91 samples, which were subjected to high-cycle fatigue tests and uniaxial static tensile tests, were assessed through the scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) mechanical tests, and fatigue and tensile tests. As a result, the MAO-epoxy duplex coating, which has a homogeneous and compact structure, was observed to improve the fatigue limit value/life, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and percentage elongation values of the base material significantly. Bioabsorbable magnesium implants for orthopedic fixation of bone have recently become available for different fields of indication. While general questions of biocompatibility have been answered, tailoring suitable degradation kinetics for specific applications as well as long-term tissue integration remain the focus of current research. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the long-term degradation behavior and osseointegration of Mg-Ca-Zn (ZX00MEO) based magnesium implants with plasma-electrolytic oxidation (PEO) surface modification (ZX00MEO-PEO) in comparison to non-surface modified implants in vivo and in vitro. Besides a general evaluation of the biological performance of the alloy over a prolonged period, the main hypothesis was that PEO surface modification significantly reduces implant degradation rate and improves tissue interaction. In vitro , the microstructure and surface of the bioabsorbable screws were characterized by SEM/EDS, cytocompatibility and degradation testing facilitating hydrogen gas evolution, carried out following ISO 10993-5/-12 and ASTM F3268-18a/ASTM G1–03 (E1:2017). In vivo , screws were implanted in the frontal bone of Minipigs for 6, 12, and 18 months, following radiological and histomorphometric analysis. A slower and more uniform degradation and improved cytocompatibility could be shown for the ZX00MEO-PEO group in vitro. A significant reduction of degradation rate and enhanced bone formation around the ZX00MEO-PEO screws in vivo was confirmed. Proficient biocompatibility and tissue integration could generally be shown in vivo regardless of surface state. The tested magnesium alloy shows generally beneficial properties as an implant material, while PEO-surface modification further improves the bioabsorption behavior both in vitro and in vivo. Devices from bioabsorbable Magnesium have recently been introduced to orthopedic applications. However, the vast degradation of Magnesium within the human body still gives limitations. While reliable in-vivo data on most promising surface treatments such as P lasma- e lectrolytic- O xidation is generally scarce, long-time results in large animals are to this date completely missing. To overcome this lack of evidence, we studied a Magnesium-Calzium-Zinc-alloy with surface enhancement by PEO for the first time ever over a period of 18 months in a large animal model. In-vitro, surface-modified screws showed significantly improved cytocompatibility and reduction of degradation confirmed by hydrogen gas evolution testing, while in-vivo radiological and histological evaluation generally showed good biocompatibility and bioabsorption as well as significantly enhanced reduction of degradation and faster bone regeneration in the PEO-surface-modified group. Different ceramic coatings were prepared on the surface of 2024 aviation aluminum alloy using micro‐arc oxidation process in silicate based electrolyte combined with the rare earth based compound Y(NO3)3·6H2O. The thickness, hardness of the coating and conductivity of electrolyte were tested using relative devices, morphology and chemical composition were studied by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectroscope, respectively. The phase composition of the coatings was characterized by X‐ray diffraction and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance of the coating was evaluated by an electrochemical workstation. The results showed that the addition of Y(NO3)3·6H2O could improve the thickness and hardness of the coating. The morphological observation of the coating showed that Y(NO3)3·6H2O was successfully incorporated into the ceramic layer and that the coating had the smallest porosity at 1.5 g/L Y(NO3)3. The phase composition of the coating was mainly γ‐Al2O3, α‐Al2O3, SiO2, Y2O3, and AlPO4. The corrosion resistance of coating in simulated seawater with the addition of Y(NO3)3·6H2O was significantly improved, and the values of |Z|0.01 Hz and corrosion rate of the coating reached the maximum and minimum at 1.5 g/L Y(NO3)3, which were 5.63 × 105 Ω cm2 and 7.444 × 10−4 mm/a, respectively. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Treatment with antidepressant drugs (ATD), which target monoamine neurotransmitters including serotonin (5HT), are only modestly effective. Monoamine oxidase (MAO) metabolizes 5HT to 5-hydroxy indoleacetic acid (5HIAA). Genetic variants in the X-chromosome-linked MAO-encoding genes, MAOA and MAOB, have been associated with clinical improvement following ATD treatment in depressed patients. Our aim was to analyze the association of MAOA and MAOB genetic variants with (1) clinical improvement and (2) the plasma 5HIAA/5HT ratio in 6-month ATD-treated depressed individuals. Clinical (n = 378) and metabolite (n = 148) data were obtained at baseline and up to 6 months after beginning ATD treatment (M6) in patients of METADAP. Mixed-effects models were used to assess the association of variants with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) score, response and remission rates, and the plasma 5HIAA/5HT ratio. Variant × sex interactions and dominance terms were included to control for X-chromosome-linked factors. The MAOA rs979605 and MAOB rs1799836 polymorphisms were analyzed. The sex × rs979605 interaction was significantly associated with the HDRS score (p = 0.012). At M6, A allele-carrying males had a lower HDRS score (n = 24, 10.9 ± 1.61) compared to AA homozygous females (n = 14, 18.1 ± 1.87; p = 0.0067). The rs1799836 polymorphism was significantly associated with the plasma 5HIAA/5HT ratio (p = 0.018). Overall, CC/C females/males had a lower ratio (n = 44, 2.18 ± 0.28) compared to TT/T females/males (n = 60, 2.79 ± 0.27; p = 0.047). The MAOA rs979605 polymorphism, associated with the HDRS score in a sex-dependent manner, could be a useful biomarker for the response to ATD treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To identify in national and international literature the use of virtual reality to develop manual skills of children with cerebral palsy. Methods: This is a systematic review carried out in the PubMed database, Portal de Periódicos da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), and the Online System for Search and Analysis of Medical Literature (Ovid Medline) using the keywords “cerebral palsy”, “virtual reality”, “occupational therapy”, “child”, “daily activities/activities of daily living”, in English and in Portuguese. The selected articles had their methodological quality evaluated through the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro scale). Results: 228 studies were selected, as they included children with cerebral palsy undergoing treatment with exposure to virtual reality to improve manual function in daily activities. Studies on other themes, incomplete, and duplicated reviews were excluded. Three evaluators conducted the study selection process and included 14 articles in the analysis. Conclusions: The findings suggest that virtual reality therapy has contributed to an improvement in the manual function of children with cerebral palsy, constituting a useful resource for a supporting intervention to enhance traditional therapies. Nostalgia for the Sent-Down Youth Movement (Shangshan xiaxiang yundong ...) is receiving official endorsement in today's China. To help review the movement academically, this article presents a county-level case study of sent-down youths' rural experiences from 1968 to 1978. It reassesses the rural lives of the sent-down youth on the margins, those living beyond the city in homes located in county seats and townships. Numbering in the millions, the experiences of these urban youth on the margins contribute to a more nuanced study of the sent-down movement. This research pays attention to the inequalities between privileged and marginal youth that were legitimized by policies, which commonly existed even among those resettled in the same county or village. Supported by either their home cities' governments or resourceful families, many young migrants had an easier rural life and enjoyed favoritism compared with their marginal peers. Serotonin (5-HT) plays an essential role in regulating female reproductive function in many animals. 5-HT accumulates in the mammalian ovary with the involvement of membrane serotonin transporter SERT and is functionally active in the oocytes of growing follicles, but shows almost no activity in follicular cells. In this study, we clarified the interplay between 5-HT membrane transport and its degradation by monoamine oxidase (MAO) in the mammalian ovary. Using pharmacologic agents and immunohistochemical staining of the cryosections of ovaries after serotonin administration in vitro, we demonstrated the activity of transport and degradation systems in ovarian follicles. The MAO inhibitor pargyline increased serotonin accumulation in the granulosa cells of growing follicles, indicating the activity of both serotonin uptake and degradation by MAO in these cells. The activity of MAO and the specificity of the membrane transport of serotonin was confirmed in primary granulosa cell culture treated with pargyline and fluoxetine. Moreover, the accumulation of serotonin is more effective in the denuded oocytes and occurs at lower concentrations than in the oocytes within the follicles. This confirms that the activity of SERT and MAO in the granulosa cells surrounding the oocytes impedes the accumulation of serotonin in the oocytes and forms a functional barrier to serotonin. Susceptibility and resilience to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are recognized, but their mechanisms are not understood. Here, the hexobarbital sleep test (HST) was used to elucidate mechanisms of PTSD resilience or susceptibility. A HST was performed in rats 30 days prior to further experimentation. Based on the HST, the rats were divided into groups: (1) fast metabolizers (FM; sleep duration < 15 min); (2) slow metabolizers (SM; sleep duration ≥ 15 min). Then the SM and FM groups were subdivided into stressed (10 days predator scent, 15 days rest) and unstressed subgroups. Among stressed animals, only SMs developed experimental PTSD, and had higher plasma corticosterone (CORT) than stressed FMs. Thus, resilience or susceptibility to PTSD was consistent with changes in glucocorticoid metabolism. Stressed SMs had a pronounced decrease in hippocampal dopamine associated with increased expressions of catecholamine-O-methyl-transferase and DA transporter. In stressed SMs, a decrease in monoaminoxidase (MAO) A was associated with increased expressions of hippocampal MAO-A and MAO-B. BDNF gene expression was increased in stressed FMs and decreased in stressed SMs. These results demonstrate relationships between the microsomal oxidation phenotype, CORT concentration, and anxiety, and they help further the understanding of the role of the liver–brain axis during PTSD. The barrier membrane plays an extremely critical role in guided bone regeneration (GBR), which determines the success or failure of GBR technology. In order to obtain barrier membranes with high mechanical strength and degradability, some researchers have focused on degradable magnesium alloys. However, the degradation rate of pure Mg-based materials in body fluids is rather fast, thus posing an urgent problem to be solved in oral clinics. In this study, a novel micro-arc oxidation (MAO) surface-treated pure Mg membrane was prepared. Electrochemical tests, immersion experiments and in vivo experiments were carried out to investigate its potential use as a barrier membrane. The experimental results showed that the corrosion resistance of a pure Mg membrane treated by MAO is better than that of the uncoated pure Mg. The results of cell experiments showed no obvious cytotoxicity, which suggests the enhanced differentiation of osteoblasts. At the same time, the MAO-Mg membrane showed better biological activity than the pure Ti membrane in the early stage of implantation, exhibiting relatively good bone regeneration ability. While initially loyal to the Soviet Union, China sought to position itself as the leader of the newly independent 'Third World', sympathetic to – and able to provide experience, training and weaponry for – rural guerrilla struggles. [Display omitted] • In situ growth of an LDH/ZIF-8 hybrid coating on the MAO film surface of LA93 alloy by a one-step method. • The formation of ZIF-8 efficiently seals the intergranular defects in LDH, enhancing the stability of the film and increasing the tortuosity of the diffusion paths for corrosive agents. • LDH/ZIF-8 film effectively seals defects in the MAO film and constructs a robust physical barrier, significantly enhancing the protective capacity of the film. An in-situ grown LDH/ZIF-8 hybrid film on the surface of MAO film based on the LA93 alloy was successfully fabricated by the one-step method. The composite film, called as MLZ, demonstrates exceptional corrosion resistance. The corrosion current density is reduced by two orders of magnitude compared to the MAO film. Furthermore, it possesses significant long-term protective capabilities. Experimental measurement and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to investigate the formation mechanism of MLZ composite film. During the hydrothermal, Zn ions from the in-situ generated LDH on the MAO surface serves as active nucleation sites, facilitating the nucleation and growth of ZIF-8 crystals. The formation of ZIF-8 effectively compensates for the intergranular defects in LDH, enhancing the integrity of the film.
