Synthesis of mechanically stable porous scaffolds with an architecture analogous to cancellous bone tissue poses significant challenges to bioactive glass (BG) based scaffolds. This is primarily due to densification and crystallization of the BG's during heat treatment. This study presents a modified BG series (42SiO2—xTiO2—24Na2O—21CaO—13P2O5, where x = 8 and 16 TiO2). TiO2 replaced the SiO2 concentration in the glass and was incorporated due to its biocompatibility and influence on glass structure. Material characterization determined that TiO2 did not induce crystallization within the glass but did increase the glass transition temperature (Tg) from 520°C to 600°C thereby indicating a more stable network connectivity. Scaffolds were synthesized using the foam replication method, resulting in scaffolds with a pore size of approximately 500 μm with the BG‐4 composition (30SiO2—12TiO2—24Na2O—21CaO—13P2O5) retaining its amorphous character post‐heat treatment. Scaffold ion release was monitored over 5–60 days in simulated body fluid (SBF). Si4+ release was found to decrease, while Ca2+ levels increased in SBF as TiO2 replaced SiO2 within the glass series. Cytocompatibility studies revealed that MC3T3 Osteoblast cells proliferated on the BG‐4 scaffold surface and at its interface within culture media, and cell numbers were not significantly reduced. Background: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of adding mesoporous silica with silver nanoparticles to conventional glass ionomer cements (GIC) on its, physical, chemical, mechanical properties and ion release analysis. Methods: Synthesized mesoporous silica with silver nanoparticles were added in 1, 3 and 5% by weight to the liquid component of GIC forming three experimental groups and compared with plain GIC as control group. Physical and chemical characterization were conducted using nano-computerized tomography (NanoCT) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Surface microhardness, water sorption and solubility were analyzed. Ion release was investigated using Inductive Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy and High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Statistical analysis between different groups for the set parameters using parametric and non-parametric tests. The results were analysed using one way analysis of variance (p < 0.05). Results: Synthesized mesoporous silica with silver nanoparticles were of 7.28 ± 5.0 nm in diameter with a spherical morphology. NanoCT revealed less porosities for 3 wt %. Microhardness showed a statistically significant difference for 5 wt% at day 1 and 21 (p < 0.0001). Water sorption values decreased significantly on day 14 compared to day 7 for control, 1, 3 and 5 wt%. Control specimens showed highest concentration of fluoride release followed by 5, 3 and 1 wt%. Conclusion: Mesoporous silica with silver nanoparticles modified glass ionomer cements showed comparable microhardness to conventional GIC. Ion release was evident from the modified specimens. The treatment of damaged enamel surfaces involves modification of the enamel surface with artificial materials or the development of a pseudo-enamel, with research focusing on bioactive and biomimetic materials. In this study, a bioactive auto-polymerizing resin (APR) was developed by adding surface-pre-reacted glass ionomer (S-PRG) fillers of different quantities to APR. Its bioactive effects were evaluated via pH neutralization, ion release, and inhibition of enamel demineralization studies. The pH and fluoride ion release were measured using ion-specific electrodes, revealing that the APR disk with the S-PRG filler immediately neutralized the lactic acid solution (pH 4.0) through ion release. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry revealed that the Sr ion release peaked on the first day, with the other ions following the order F > B > Si > Al > Na, exhibiting a weekly decrease in the same order. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the enamel block morphology of the disks after 7 d of incubation, revealing enamel demineralization in disks without the S-PRG filler, whereas no demineralization occurred in disks with the S-PRG filler. To evaluate experimental dimethacrylate-based materials containing calcium orthophosphates or calcium silicate particles in terms of their optical, mechanical and Ca2+ release behaviour. Dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD), hydroxyapatite (HAp), beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) or calcium silicate (CaSi) particles were added to a photocurable BisGMA/TEGDMA resin (1:1 in mols) at a 30 vol% fraction. Materials containing silanized or non-silanized barium glass particles were used as controls. Degree of conversion (DC) at the top and base of 2-mm thick specimens was determined by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy (n = 5). Translucency parameter (TP) and transmittance (%T) were determined using a spectrophotometer (n = 3). Biaxial flexural strength (BFS) and flexural modulus (FM) were determined by biaxial flexural testing after 24 h storage in water (n = 10). Ca2+ release in water was determined during 28 days by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (n = 3). Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA/Tukey test (DC: two-way; TP, %T; BFS and FM: one-way; Ca2+ release: repeated measures two-way, α = 5 %). Results: CaSi and β-TCP particles drastically reduced DC at 2 mm, TP and %T (p < 0.001). Compared to both controls, all Ca2+-releasing materials presented lower BFS (p < 0.001) and only the material with DCPD showed significantly lower FM (p < 0.05). The material containing CaSi presented the highest Ca2+ release, while among materials formulated with calcium orthophosphates the use of DCPD resulted in the highest release (p < 0.001). CaSi particles allowed the highest Ca2+ release. In this study, home bleaching was applied to dental materials with different contents and it was aimed to determine the type and amount of ions released from these materials. Methods: In this study, amalgam, posterior composite resin, anterior composite resin, bulk fill composite resin, indirect composite resin, hybrid ceramic and all-ceramic were used as restorative materials. 10 specimens of each material were prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions. Each material group was divided into two subgroups as the bleached group and the control group. After bleaching, all specimens were stored in 1 ml of 75% ethanol/water solution. Solutions were renewed after 1, 14 and 28 days. The type and amount of ions released from the materials were determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). Data were analyzed using the Friedman, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks, and Mann-Whitney U tests (α = 0.05). Results: It was determined that the amount of ions release from the restorative materials decreased over time (p < 0.05). According to the results of the Mann-Whitney U test, there was no difference between the bleaching and control groups in most of the restorative materials (p > 0.05). The solubility/degradability of bioactive glasses play crucial role in bone tissue engineering applications owing to the release of ions from their structure, which exert therapeutic effects on tissues. The present study evaluates the findings of a detailed investigation on the main features and solubility behaviors of newly formulated Nb incorporated glasses (Nb-BGs). New glass formulation in SiO 2 –CaO–Na 2 O–P 2 O 5 –CaF 2 –SrO–xNb 2 O 5 (x: 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mol. %) system was successfully synthesized by melt-quenching technique. Glass composition was verified with Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence spectrometer analysis and its amorphous nature, functional groups of the matrix and morphological features were identified via X-Ray diffraction analyses, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope analysis, respectively. Network connectivity (NC) of the Nb-BGs was assessed with respect to the role of Nb 2 O 5 in the glass matrix as network former, modifier, or both. In order to evaluate the in vitro solubility of Nb-BGs, released concentrations of particular ions from the glass compositions were determined at certain time points and comprehensively discussed with several mathematical models such as zero-order, first-order, second-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer-Peppas for the first time. Results showed that the incorporation of Nb 2 O 5 (up to 1.5 mol. %) increased the density, oxygen density as well as NC values of newly formulated glasses. Si, Na and Ca ions which play a main role in well-defined Hench's mechanism followed mostly second-order release kinetics for all glasses in the mathematical models studied. When the Nb content increase (to 1.5 mol. %) in glass composition, the release mechanism of Si ion according to Korsmeyer-Peppas model shifts from the diffusion mechanism to an erosion-dominant release mechanism. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are among the most produced nanomaterials in the world and are incorporated into several products due to their biocide and physicochemical properties. Since freshwater bodies are AgNPs main final sink, several consequences for biota are expected to occur. With the hypothesis that AgNPs can interact with environmental factors, we analyzed their ecotoxicity in combination with humic acids and algae. In addition to the specific AgNPs behavior in the media, we analyzed the mortality, growth, and phototactic behavior of Chydorus eurynotus (Cladocera) as response variables. While algae promoted Ag+ release, humic acids reduced it by adsorption, and their combination resulted in an intermediated Ag+ release. AgNPs affected C. eurynotus survival and growth, but algae and humic acids reduced AgNPs lethality, especially when combined. The humic acids mitigated AgNP effects in C. eurynotus growth, and both factors improved its phototactic behavior. It is essential to deepen the study of the isolated and combined influences of environmental factors on the ecotoxicity of nanoparticles to achieve accurate predictions under realistic exposure scenarios. Abstract This study investigated phytic acid (IP6) effect on chemical, structural, and mechanical characteristics of nickel–titanium (NiTi) files. The tested files were equally divided into groups according to the immersion protocol: sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), IP6, EDTA followed by NaOCl, and IP6 followed by NaOCl. These groups were then compared in terms of Ni, Ti, and chromium (Cr) ions release from the files. Microstructural changes using field emission scanning electron microscope (Fe-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and surface roughness were analyzed. The mechanical characterization was conducted using cyclic fatigue resistance test. Fractured segments were scanned under SEM. Abstract Background Low mechanical properties are the main limitation of glass ionomer cements (GICs). The incorporation of elastomeric micelles is expected to enhance the strength of GICs without detrimentally affecting their physical properties and biocompatibility. This study compared the chemical and mechanical properties, as well as the cytotoxicity, of elastomeric micelles-containing glass ionomer cement (DeltaFil, DT) with commonly used materials, including EQUIA Forte Fil (EF), Fuji IX GP Extra (F9), and Ketac Molar (KT). Method Powder particles of GICs were examined with SEM-EDX. Setting kinetics were assessed using ATR-FTIR. Biaxial flexural strength/modulus and Vickers surface microhardness were measured after immersion in water for 24 h and 4 weeks. The release of F, Al, Sr, and P in water over 8 weeks was analyzed using a fluoride-specific electrode and ICP-OES. The toxicity of the material extract on mouse fibroblasts was also evaluated. Results High fluoride levels in the powder were detected with EF and F9. DT demonstrated an initial delay followed by a faster acid reaction compared to other cements, suggesting an improved snap set. DT also exhibited superior flexural strength than other materials at both 24 h and 4 weeks but lower surface microhardness (p 0.05). Conclusions Elastomeric micelles-containing glass ionomer cement (DT) exhibited satisfactory mechanical properties and cytocompatibility compared with other materials. DT could, therefore, potentially be considered an alternative high-strength GIC for load-bearing restorations.

Background: This longitudinal prospective study aimed to assess orthodontic patients' immune system response to metal ion release in saliva. Methods: Thirty adult patients (18–35 years) were equally divided into three groups: groups at the end (G1) and beginning (G2) of multibracket appliances (MBA) treatment and a non-treated control group (G3). Participants were evaluated at four timepoints within 21 days, with saliva samples being analyzed for metal ion concentrations and blood for the lymphocyte transformation test (LTT). Results: There were no significant differences between groups or timepoints for saliva. LTT analyses revealed hypersensitivity in one-third of all patients and 50% of G2 for nickel, with three developing sensitizations after MBA insertion. All nickel-sensitized patients exhibited varying elevated saliva nickel concentrations. The most nickel-sensitized patients had low ion saliva loads. In borderline nickel-sensitization cases, saliva ion concentrations were up to 20 times higher than the reference. Hypersensitivity to palladium, gold, and mercury was also observed. Conclusions: These findings indicate that increased MBA ion release was not inherently linked to the immune response (Type-IV sensitization), as reactions occurred even with ion levels below thresholds. Titanium (Ti) is widely used in medical and dental implants. Calcium phosphate (CPs) coatings enhance Ti implants' osteoinductive properties, and additives further improve these coatings. Recently, a nano amorphous calcium phosphate (nACP) coating decorated with chitosan oligolactate (ChOL) and selenium (Se) showed immunomodulatory effects. This study investigates the surface morphology, composition, bioactivity, mechanical properties, and Se-release mechanism of the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating on Ti substrates. Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) was synthesized, and the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating was deposited on Ti substrates using in situ anaphoretic deposition. Physico-chemical characterization was used to analyze the surface of the coating (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy). The distribution of Se within the coating was examined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Bioactivity was evaluated in simulated body fluid (SBF), and adhesion was tested using a scratch test method. In vitro testing determined the release mechanism of Se. SEM images illustrated the surface morphology, while AFM provided a detailed analysis of surface roughness. XRD analysis revealed structural and phase composition, and EDS confirmed Se distribution within the coating. The coating exhibited bioactivity in SBF and showed good adhesion according to the scratch test. In vitro testing uncovered the release mechanism of Se from the coating. This study successfully characterized the surface morphology, composition, bioactivity, and Se-release mechanism of the nACP@ChOL-Se hybrid coating on Ti substrates, offering insights for developing immunomodulatory coatings for medical and dental applications. To overcome current limitations in photoimmunotherapy, such as insufficient tumor antigen generation and a subdued immune response, a novel photo‐/metallo dual‐mode immunotherapeutic agent (PMIA) is introduced for potent near‐infrared (NIR) light‐triggered cancer therapy. PMIA features a dumbbell‐like AuPt heterostructure decorated with starry Pt nanoclusters, meticulously engineered for enhancing plasmonic catalysis through multi‐dimensional regulation of Pt growth on Au nanorods. Under NIR laser exposure, end‐tipped Pt nanoclusters induce efficient electron‐hole spatial separation along the longitudinal axis, resulting in radial and axial electron distribution polarization, conferring unique anisotropic properties to PMIA. Additionally, starry Pt nanoclusters on the sides of Au nanorods augment the local electron enrichment field. Validated through finite‐difference time‐domain analysis and Raman scattering, this configuration fosters local electron enrichment, facilitating robust reactive oxygen species generation for potent photoimmunotherapy. Moreover, Pt nanoclusters facilitate Pt2+ ion release, instigating intranuclear DNA damage and inducing synergistic immunogenic cell death (ICD) for metalloimmunotherapy. Consequently, PMIA elicits abundant danger‐associated molecular patterns, promotes T cell infiltration, and triggers systemic immune responses, effectively treating primary and distant tumors, inhibiting metastasis in vivo. This study unveils a pioneering dual‐mode ICD amplification strategy driven by NIR light, synergistically integrating photoimmunotherapy and metalloimmunotherapy, culminating in potent cancer photometalloimmunotherapy. To investigate the effect of hydrophilic/permeable polymer matrices on water sorption/solubility (WS/SL), Ca2+ release, mechanical properties and hydrolytic degradation of composites containing dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) particles. Six composites were tested, all with 10 vol% of glass particles and either 30 vol% or 40 vol% DCPD. Composites containing 1BisGMA:1TEGDMA in mols (at both inorganic levels) were considered controls. Four materials were formulated where 0.25 or 0.5 of the BisGMA/TEGDMA was replaced by pyromellitic dianhydride glycerol dimethacrylate (PMGDM)/ polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA). Composites were tested for degree of conversion (FTIR spectroscopy), WS/SL (ISO 4049) and Ca2+ release (inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy). Fracture toughness (FT) and biaxial flexural strength/modulus (BFS/FM) were determined after 24 h and 60 days in water. The contributions of diffusional and relaxational mechanisms to Ca2+ release kinetics were analyzed using the semi-empirical Salim-Peppas model. Data were analysed by ANOVA/Tukey test (alpha: 0.05). WS/SL was higher for composites containing PMGDM/PEGDMA compared to the controls (p < 0.001). Only at 40% DCPD the 0.5 PMGDM/PEGDMA composite showed statistically higher Ca2+ release than the control. Relaxation diffusion was the main release mechanism. Initial FT was not negatively affected by matrix composition. BFS (both DCPD fractions) and FM (30% DCPD) were lower for composites with hydrophilic/permeable networks (p < 0.01). After 60 days in water, composites with PMGDM/PEGDMA presented significant reductions in FT, while all composites had reductions in BFS/FM. Understanding the environmental health and safety of nanomaterials (NanoEHS) is essential for the sustained development of nanotechnology. Although extensive research over the past two decades has elucidated the phenomena, mechanisms, and implications of nanomaterials in cellular and organismal models, the active remediation of the adverse biological and environmental effects of nanomaterials remains largely unexplored. Inspired by recent developments in functional amyloids for biomedical and environmental engineering, this work shows their new utility as metallothionein mimics in the strategically important area of NanoEHS. Specifically, metal ions released from CuO and ZnO nanoparticles are sequestered through cysteine coordination and electrostatic interactions with beta‐lactoglobulin (bLg) amyloid, as revealed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and molecular dynamics simulations. The toxicity of the metal oxide nanoparticles is subsequently mitigated by functional amyloids, as validated by cell viability and apoptosis assays in vitro and murine survival and biomarker assays in vivo. As bLg amyloid fibrils can be readily produced from whey in large quantities at a low cost, the study offers a crucial strategy for remediating the biological and environmental footprints of transition metal oxide nanomaterials. Implantoplasty is a technique increasingly used to remove the biofilm that causes peri-implantitis on dental implants. This technique of mechanization of the titanium surface makes it possible to eliminate bacterial colonies, but it can generate variations in the properties of the implant. These variations, especially those in fatigue resistance and electrochemical corrosion behavior, have not been studied much. In this work, fatigue tests were performed on 60 dental implants without implantoplasty, namely 30 in air and 30 in Hank's solution at 37 °C, and 60 with implatoplasty, namely 30 in air and 30 in Hank's solution at 37 °C, using triaxial tension–compression and torsion stresses simulating human chewing. Mechanical tests were performed with a Bionix servo-hydraulic testing machine and fracture surfaces were studied by scanning electron microcopyElectrochemical corrosion tests were performed on 20 dental implants to determine the corrosion potentials and corrosion intensity for control implants and implantoplasty implants. Studies of titanium ion release to the physiological medium were carried out for each type of dental implants by Inductively Coupled-Plasma Mass Spectrometry at different immersion times at 37 °C. The results show a loss of fatigue caused by the implantoplasty of 30%, observing that the nucleation points of the cracks are in the areas of high deformation in the areas of the implant neck where the mechanization produced in the treatment of the implantoplasty causes an exaltation of fatigue cracks. It has been observed that tests performed in Hank's solution reduce the fatigue life due to the incorporation of hydrogen in the titanium causing the formation of hydrides that embrittle the dental implant. Likewise, the implantoplasty causes a reduction of the corrosion resistance with some pitting on the machined surface. Ion release analyses are slightly higher in the implantoplasted samples but do not show statistically significant differences. It has been observed that the physiological environment reduces the fatigue life of the implants due to the penetration of hydrogen into the titanium forming titanium hydrides which embrittle the implant. These results should be taken into account by clinicians to determine the convenience of performing a treatment such as implantoplasty that reduces the mechanical behavior and increases the chemical degradation of the titanium dental implant. Purpose: To investigate the in vitro biocompatibility of human gingival fibroblasts with preformed paediatric crowns and resistance to acid exposure at levels that simulate the oral environment. Methods: This laboratory study investigated primary HGFs viability, metabolic activity, cytotoxicity, and apoptotic events on preformed metal crown discs, composite resin-coated wells, and monolithic zirconia fragments at 24, 48, and 72 h using the ApoTox-Glo Triplex assay. The PPCs were also immersed in 0.1% lactic acid, 0.2% phosphoric acid, or 10% citric acid for 7 days at 37 °C to reproduce conditions associated with dietary intake or gastric reflux. Samples were then subject to inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry to quantitate the release of ions. Results: The viability of HGFs on stainless steel and CR significantly declined at 48 and 72 h, representing potential cytotoxicity (p < 0.05). Cytotoxicity of HGFs was also higher for stainless steel and ZR compared to control (p < 0.05). PMCs and ZR crowns gave minimal ion release. Meanwhile, significant quantities of metallic ions, including copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn), were present in eluates from veneered-preformed metal crowns. Conclusion: As PPCs can be exposed to highly acidic environments for many years, thus the release of metallic ions from V-PMCs should form the further investigation in future studies. Objective: Garlic can help humans ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages by sufficient zinc and magnesium intake. Method: Serpentine treated it by microwaving and sintering to enhance its crystallinity as well as its magnesium and zinc ion release rates. Furthermore, an enriched garlic enzyme extract had an approximately 8-fold increase in alliinase activity. Results: Strong bonding was observed for the microwaved and sintered powders, but also facilitated zinc ion reactions and reduced lattice defects. Objective: Dental hypersensitivity remains widespread, underscoring the need for materials that can effectively seal dental tubules. This study evaluated the potential of bioactive-glass-infused hydroxyethyl cellulose gels in this context. Methods: Five gels were synthesized, each containing 20% bioactive glass (specifically, 45S5, S53P4, Biomin F, and Biomin C), with an additional blank gel serving as a control. Subjected to two months of accelerated aging at 37 ± 2 °C, these gels were assessed for key properties: viscosity, water disintegration time, pH level, consistency, adhesion to glass, and element release capability. Results: Across the board, the gels facilitated the release of calcium, phosphate, and silicon ions, raising the pH from 9.00 ± 0.10 to 9.7 ± 0.0—a range conducive to remineralization. Dissolution in water occurred within 30–50 min post-application. Viscosity readings showed variability, with 45S5 reaching 6337 ± 24 mPa/s and Biomin F at 3269 ± 18 mPa/s after two months. Initial adhesion for the blank gel was measured at 0.27 ± 0.04 Pa, increasing to 0.73 ± 0.06 Pa for the others over time. Gels can release elements upon contact with water (Ca− Biomin C 104.8 ± 15.7 mg/L; Na− Biomin F 76.30 ± 11.44 mg/L; P− Biomin C 2.623 ± 0.393 mg/L; Si− 45S5-45.15 ± 6.77mg/L, F− Biomin F− 3.256 ± 0.651mg/L; Cl− Biomin C 135.5 ± 20.3 mg/L after 45 min). Dental caries is one of the common preventable diseases. And it is amongst the primary causes of oral pain and tooth loss. Fluoride is reported as an effective and safe agent in the prevention and control of dental caries. Therefore, today many products such as gel, varnish, toothpaste, and restorative materials contain fluoride ions, and restorative materials that can release fluoride are preferred in dental treatments. Today, there are many fluoride-containing restorative materials, including glass ionomer cements, compomers, glass carbomers, giomers, and fluoride-containing composite resins. When the studies are examined, there are many studies on the fluoride release of the restorative materials that release fluoride on the discs, and there are a limited number of studies on the ion releases other than fluoride on the teeth. Therefore, in this study, it was aimed to investigate the ion release of various restorative materials that release fluoride to primary teeth in vitro. In the study, Ionofil U (cgic), Dyract XP (compomer), EQUIA Fil (glass hybrid), SDR plus U (composite) and Beautifil-Bulk (giomer) materials were used. The ion release concentrations of the materials in the primary teeth on the 1st, 14th and 35th days were evaluated in the SEM device in the EDAX TEAM program. As a result of this research, amongst the restorative materials used, the highest average fluoride release value was determined in the glass ionomer group, followed by glass hybrid restorative material, compomer, giomer and bulk flow composite material, and in line with these findings, higher fluoride release and the decrease in fluoride release over time were found to be other. The phosphate ester monomer 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) is capable of bonding to hydroxyapatite and, for this reason, is a key component of several self-etch adhesives. In this study, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate particles (DCPD; CaHPO4.2H2O) were functionalized with 10-MDP and used to formulate an experimental composite with 50 vol% inorganic content (3:1 DCPD:silanated barium glass ratio) dispersed in a BisGMA/TEGDMA matrix. The tested hypothesis was that DCPD functionalization would improve the composite's mechanical performance without compromising Ca2+ release. Composites containing nonfunctionalized DCPD or only reinforcing glass (in both cases, with or without 10-MDP mixed in the resin phase) were used as controls. Materials were tested for degree of conversion (DC; by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), water sorption (WS) and solubility (SL; according to ISO 4049), biaxial flexural strength (BFS)/modulus (FM) after 24 h and 5 mo in water, and 28-d Ca2+ release in water (by plasma-coupled optical emission spectroscopy). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance/Tukey test (alpha: 5%). DCPD functionalization did not interfere with DC. The composite containing functionalized DCPD showed significantly lower WS and SL in comparison with the material formulated with nonfunctionalized particles. The presence of 10-MDP (as a functionalizing agent or dispersed in the resin phase) reduced the composite's initial BFS and FM. After 5 mo in water, the composite with functionalized DCPD and both glass-only composites were able to maintain their mechanical properties at levels statistically similar to what was observed after 24 h. Ca2+ release was significantly reduced in both formulations containing 10-MDP. In conclusion, DCPD functionalization with 10-MDP increased the composite's resistance to hydrolytic degradation, improving its mechanical stability after prolonged water storage. While titanium nitride (TiN) coatings are well known for their biocompatibility and excellent mechanical properties, their wear particle and debris release in orthopedic implants remains a matter of active investigation. This study addresses the efficacy of TiN coatings on CoCrMo and Ti6Al4V alloys to enhance wear resistance and reduce ion release from prosthetic implants. Three different coating variants were utilized: one variant deposited using arc evaporation (Arc) followed by post-treatment, and two variants deposited using high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) with or without post-treatment. The coatings' performance was assessed through standard wear testing against ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) in bovine serum lubricant, and in the presence of abrasive PMMA bone cement particles in the lubricant. The results indicated that Arc and HiPIMS with post-treatment significantly reduced wear and eliminated detectable metal ion release, suggesting that these coatings could extend implant longevity and minimize adverse biological responses. Calcium phosphate (CaP) glass has recently gained popularity as a promising material for a wide range of biomedical applications. Recent developments have seen CaP glasses moving from a passive implant material to an active degradable material, particularly as a major constituent of bioresorbable photonic devices. This holds great promise in advanced biomedical applications, since the main constituents of CaP glasses are present in the human body. In this review, the progressive advancements in the biomedical applications of calcium phosphate glass-based devices over the past 50 years are discussed. An overview of their role as reinforcing agents and the studies on doping their matrices for ion releasing and drug and gene delivery are reviewed. Recent applications of CaP glass and fibers in soft-tissue engineering and their potential for optical quality bioresorbable devices are then discussed along with the current challenges and potential future directions, emphasizing the promising role of CaP glass in the next generation of biomaterials. Considering their progress and potential in performing several biomedical functionalities over time, CaP glass-based devices hold promise for becoming enabling tools as an implantable, bioresorbable, multifunctional class of devices in future biomedicine. Abstract To overcome current limitations in photoimmunotherapy, such as insufficient tumor antigen generation and a subdued immune response, a novel photo‐/metallo dual‐mode immunotherapeutic agent (PMIA) is introduced for potent near‐infrared (NIR) light‐triggered cancer therapy. PMIA features a dumbbell‐like AuPt heterostructure decorated with starry Pt nanoclusters, meticulously engineered for enhancing plasmonic catalysis through multi‐dimensional regulation of Pt growth on Au nanorods. Under NIR laser exposure, end‐tipped Pt nanoclusters induce efficient electron‐hole spatial separation along the longitudinal axis, resulting in radial and axial electron distribution polarization, conferring unique anisotropic properties to PMIA. Additionally, starry Pt nanoclusters on the sides of Au nanorods augment the local electron enrichment field. Validated through finite‐difference time‐domain analysis and Raman scattering, this configuration fosters local electron enrichment, facilitating robust reactive oxygen species generation for potent photoimmunotherapy. Moreover, Pt nanoclusters facilitate Pt2+ ion release, instigating intranuclear DNA damage and inducing synergistic immunogenic cell death (ICD) for metalloimmunotherapy. Consequently, PMIA elicits abundant danger‐associated molecular patterns, promotes T cell infiltration, and triggers systemic immune responses, effectively treating primary and distant tumors, inhibiting metastasis in vivo. This study unveils a pioneering dual‐mode ICD amplification strategy driven by NIR light, synergistically integrating photoimmunotherapy and metalloimmunotherapy, culminating in potent cancer photometalloimmunotherapy.

This study aimed to develop resin coatings containing monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM), Sr/F-doped bioactive glass (Sr/F-BAGs), and pre-reacted glass ionomer fillers (SPG) that enhance ion release without detrimentally affecting the mechanical properties of GIC. The objective of this study was to evaluate the degree of monomer conversion (DC), biaxial flexural strength, surface microhardness, and ion release of the GICs coated with experimental coating materials compared to a commercial product (EQUIA Coat, EC). Four experimental resin coating materials containing 10–20 wt% of MCPM with Sr/F-BAGs and 5–10 wt% SPG were prepared. The DC of the coating material was determined using ATR-FTIR. The flexural strength and surface microhardness of the coated GICs were assessed. Fluoride and elemental (Ca,P,Sr,Si,Al) release were measured using fluoride-specific electrodes and ICP-OES. The DC of the experimental coating material (60–69 %) was higher than that of EC (55 %). The strength of GICs coated with experimental materials (35–40 MPa) was comparable to EC (37 MPa). However, their surface microhardness (13–24 VHN) was lower than EC (44 VHN). The experimental coating materials reduced fluoride release by ∼43 %, similar to EC (∼40 %). However, experimental coating materials promoted higher P and Sr release than EC. In conclusion, GICs coated with the experimental resin coating containing ion-releasing additives exhibited mechanical properties similar to those of the commercial product. The new coating materials promoted a higher level of ion release for GICs. These properties could potentially enhance remineralizing actions for the coated GICs.

Abstract Understanding the environmental health and safety of nanomaterials (NanoEHS) is essential for the sustained development of nanotechnology. Although extensive research over the past two decades has elucidated the phenomena, mechanisms, and implications of nanomaterials in cellular and organismal models, the active remediation of the adverse biological and environmental effects of nanomaterials remains largely unexplored. Inspired by recent developments in functional amyloids for biomedical and environmental engineering, this work shows their new utility as metallothionein mimics in the strategically important area of NanoEHS. Specifically, metal ions released from CuO and ZnO nanoparticles are sequestered through cysteine coordination and electrostatic interactions with beta‐lactoglobulin (bLg) amyloid, as revealed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and molecular dynamics simulations. The toxicity of the metal oxide nanoparticles is subsequently mitigated by functional amyloids, as validated by cell viability and apoptosis assays in vitro and murine survival and biomarker assays in vivo. As bLg amyloid fibrils can be readily produced from whey in large quantities at a low cost, the study offers a crucial strategy for remediating the biological and environmental footprints of transition metal oxide nanomaterials.

The treatment of damaged enamel surfaces involves modification of the enamel surface with artificial materials or the development of a pseudo-enamel, with research focusing on bioactive and biomimetic materials. In this study, a bioactive auto-polymerizing resin (APR) was developed by adding surface-pre-reacted glass ionomer (S-PRG) fillers of different quantities to APR. Its bioactive effects were evaluated via pH neutralization, ion release, and inhibition of enamel demineralization studies. The pH and fluoride ion release were measured using ion-specific electrodes, revealing that the APR disk with the S-PRG filler immediately neutralized the lactic acid solution (pH 4.0) through ion release. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry revealed that the Sr ion release peaked on the first day, with the other ions following the order F > B > Si > Al > Na, exhibiting a weekly decrease in the same order. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the enamel block morphology of the disks after 7 d of incubation, revealing enamel demineralization in disks without the S-PRG filler, whereas no demineralization occurred in disks with the S-PRG filler. APR containing the S-PRG filler demonstrated acid buffering suppressed enamel demineralization and bioactive properties.

Lithium disilicate (LD) glass-ceramics have adequate mechanical properties and are considered as a candidate for repairing large bone defects. However, LD glass-ceramic is an inherently inert restorative material, which cannot induce new bone tissue. In the present study, LD glass-ceramics were ion-exchanged at 235 °C for 16 h, 64 h and 128 h in a mixed salt bath of sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate (1:1 M ratio) respectively. A gradient concentration distribution of Na+-rich layer was obtained by Li+/Na+ exchange and Na+ ions were released from the Li+/Na+ exchanged LD glass-ceramics in an aqueous condition. The hydroxyapatite (HA) layer was formed on Li+/Na+ exchanged LD glass-ceramic and exhibited a significant exchange time-dependent after soaking in the simulated body fluid (SBF). Moreover, the Li+/Na+ exchange treatment could improve cell adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of LD glass-ceramic significantly, and long-time treatment could achieve a better performance. Therefore, ion-exchange process is a feasible strategy to promote the surface biomineralization, cytocompatibility and osteogenesis of LD glass-ceramics. to evaluate the effect a glass ionomer cement (GIC) containing hydroxyapatite (HAp) or calcium silicate (CaSi) particles on mineral content and mechanical properties of demineralized dentin. Ion release and compressive strength (CS) of the cements were also evaluated. GIC (Fuji 9 Gold Label, GC), GIC+ 5%HAp and GIC+ 5%CaSi (by mass) were evaluated. Ion release was determined by induced coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (Ca2+/Sr2+) or ion-specific electrode (F-) (n = 3). A composite (Filtek Z250, 3 M ESPE) was used as control in remineralization tests. Demineralized dentin discs were kept in contact with materials in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 °C for eight weeks. Mineral:matrix ratio (MMR) was determined by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy (n = 5). Dentin hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) were determined by nanoindentation (n = 10). CS was tested after 24 h and 7d in deionized water (n = 12). Data were analyzed by ANOVA/Tukey test (α = 0.05). Ca2+ and Sr2+ release was higher for the modified materials (p < 0.05). Only GIC+ 5%HAp showed higher F- release than the control (p < 0.05). All groups showed statistically significant increases in MMR, with no differences among them after 8 weeks (p > 0.05). No differences in dentin H or E were observed among groups (p > 0.05). HAp-modified GIC showed increased initial CS, while adding CaSi had the opposite effect (p < 0.05). After 7 days, GIC+ 5%CaSi presented lower CS in relation to control and GIC+ 5%HAp (p < 0.05). Aim This in‑vitro study aimed to evaluate time‑dependent ion‑release and antibacterial activity of three self‑adhesive resin cements. Materials and methods Sixty cement discs of the three tested self‑adhesive resin cements were fabricated according to the manufacturer’s instructions in a plastic transparent mold, their dimensions were 6 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height. They were divided into three main experimental groups according to the self‑adhesive resin cement type: group A (Thera‑Cem), group B (G‑Cem), and group C (RelyX Unicem 2) (20 each). Then, each main group was further subdivided into subgroup 1 (n = 10) for antibacterial assessment against Streptococcus mutans and subgroup 2 (n = 10) for ion‑release assessment of fluoride and calcium. Direct contact test was used to monitor the bacterial outgrowth. Fluoride and calcium ions release were measured by ion chromatography and atomic absorption spectrometer respectively. All results were analyzed by one‑way analysis of variance then multiple comparison Tukey’s test. Results All the evaluated cements exhibited antibacterial effects against S. mutans; fluoride and calcium were released by all the three cements in varying concentrations after aging. Conclusion Based on the results of this in‑vitro study and within its limitations, it can be concluded that self‑adhesive resin cements seem to provide promising antibacterial and remineralizing effects as being bioactive materials. Purpose The aim of the present study is to determine the amount of titanium ions released into the artificial salivary medium by modified glass ionomer cement (GIC) doped with 3% and 5% (w/w) titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs), and to evaluate their antibacterial properties. Materials and Methods 120 cylindrical discs with a diameter of 4 mm and a height of 6 mm were made with 3% and 5% w/w modified GIC containing TiO2 NPs, divided into two groups of 60, and immersed in a chemically synthesized salivary medium. The samples were quantified over four-time periods: 24 hours, two months, four months, and six months, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), antibacterial properties were evaluated by means of colony forming count (CFU) method. Results The amount of titanium ions released from the discs that received 3%(w/w) TiO2 was highest in the first two months, with no significant release at successive intervals. Also, the second group, which included 5% (w/w) TiO2, saw a considerable ion release at every interval, with the second month seeing the maximum release. The levels in the 5% (w/w) group were consistently higher when the two concentrations were compared at each of the four time points, indicating a considerable increase in titanium release and antibacterial property with a concentration increase from 3% to 5%. Conclusion 3% and 5% (w/w) concentrations may be considered safe and exhibit significant antimicrobial effect, titanium ions were discharged at higher rates in 5% (w/w) modified GIC containing TiO2-NPs than in 3% (w/w) modified GIC containing TiO2-NPs. This study examined the mechanical and chemical properties of an experimental provisional restoration containing Sr-bioactive glass nanoparticles (Sr-BGNPs) compared to commercial provisional materials. The experimental material (TempS10) contained dimethacrylate monomers with added 10 wt% Sr-BGNPs. The degree of monomer conversion (DC) of self-curing (n = 5), biaxial flexural strength (BFS)/modulus (BFM) (n = 5), and color changes (ΔE*00) of materials in red wine (n = 5) were determined. Additionally, ion release (Ca, P, and Sr) in water at 2 weeks was examined (n = 3). The commercial materials tested included polymethyl methacrylate-based provisional material (Unifast) and bis-acrylic materials (Protemp4 and Cooltemp). TempS10 exhibited a comparable degree of monomer conversion (49%) to that of Protemp4 (60%) and Cooltemp (54%) (p > 0.05). The DC of Unifast (81%) was significantly higher than that of other materials (p < 0.05). TempS10 showed a BFS (126 MPa) similar to Cooltemp (102 MPa) and Unifast (123 MPa), but lower than Protemp4 (194 MPa). The immersion time for 2 weeks exhibited no detrimental effect on the strength and modulus of all materials. The highest ΔE*00 at 24 h and 2 weeks was observed with TempS10, followed by Cooltemp, Unifast, and Protemp4. Only TempS10 showed a detectable amount of Ca (0.69 ppm), P (0.12 ppm), and Sr (3.01 ppm). The experimental provisional resin restoration containing Sr-BGNPs demonstrated polymerization and strength comparable to those of bis-acryl provisional restorations but with the added benefit of ion-releasing properties. Statement of the Problem: Tooth discoloration in the form of staining is a common finding during conventional orthodontic treatment. Due to elevated esthetic standards, clinicians in the field of orthodontics are faced with increasing demands by patients to perform bleaching treatments while the appliances are still in place. Though the success of such treatments has been reported in literature, the effect of whitening agents on orthodontic appliances has not been evaluated. Increased ion release following corrosion of orthodontic brackets is considered a health hazard. Purpose: In this study, we measured the amount of ion release from steel brackets under home and office bleaching treatment in order to evaluate the safety of such treatments during orthodontic therapy. Materials and Method: In this experimental study, a total of 120 brackets were randomly divided into 3 groups. The first group was subjected to an office bleaching regimen (hydrogen peroxide 40%). The second group was subjected to a home bleaching treatment (carbamide peroxide 20%). The third group did not receive any bleaching treatment. The specimens of all groups were immersed in artificial saliva and after 30 days, the amount of released chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, and nickel ions was measured and compared using one way ANOVA. Results: The results showed that ion release was significantly different between the three groups (p Value >0.05). For the chromium, iron, magnesium, and Nickel ion release the order was as follows: no bleaching < home bleaching < office bleaching. However, the copper ion release was greater in the group that received home bleaching. Conclusion: Ion release was enhanced when bleaching treatments were performed, with office bleaching having a more significant effect. Although the amounts of released ions were less than those permitted by WHO, we suggest that the clinicians recommend home bleaching for orthodontic patients that are seeking tooth whitening treatment.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a resin based pit and fissure sealant containing 45S5 bioactive glass (BAG) by examining its ion release, pH variation, and apatite-forming properties. To prepare the experimental materials, 45S5 BAG, used as a filler, was incorporated into the light curable resin matrix at concentrations of 0 (control), 12.5, 37.5, and 50.0 wt.%. Ion release, pH variation, and apatite formation (Raman spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry measurements) were performed. While no ions were released from the control group, the experimental groups containing 45S5 BAG showed an increased release of Ca and P ions with increasing amounts of 45S5 BAG (p < 0.05). The pH of the experimental group remained high and was significantly different from the control group (p < 0.05). Unlike the control group, it was confirmed that the apatite peak was formed in the 50.0 wt.% BAG group for 90 days, and the apatite layer consisting of Ca and P was deposited on the surface. Thus, a resin based pit and fissure sealant containing 45S5 BAG is a promising material for preventing secondary caries by releasing ions and forming apatite.

Implantoplasty is a technique increasingly used to remove the biofilm that causes peri-implantitis on dental implants. This technique of mechanization of the titanium surface makes it possible to eliminate bacterial colonies, but it can generate variations in the properties of the implant. These variations, especially those in fatigue resistance and electrochemical corrosion behavior, have not been studied much. In this work, fatigue tests were performed on 60 dental implants without implantoplasty, namely 30 in air and 30 in Hank’s solution at 37 °C, and 60 with implatoplasty, namely 30 in air and 30 in Hank’s solution at 37 °C, using triaxial tension–compression and torsion stresses simulating human chewing. Mechanical tests were performed with a Bionix servo-hydraulic testing machine and fracture surfaces were studied by scanning electron microcopyElectrochemical corrosion tests were performed on 20 dental implants to determine the corrosion potentials and corrosion intensity for control implants and implantoplasty implants. Studies of titanium ion release to the physiological medium were carried out for each type of dental implants by Inductively Coupled-Plasma Mass Spectrometry at different immersion times at 37 °C. The results show a loss of fatigue caused by the implantoplasty of 30%, observing that the nucleation points of the cracks are in the areas of high deformation in the areas of the implant neck where the mechanization produced in the treatment of the implantoplasty causes an exaltation of fatigue cracks. It has been observed that tests performed in Hank’s solution reduce the fatigue life due to the incorporation of hydrogen in the titanium causing the formation of hydrides that embrittle the dental implant. Likewise, the implantoplasty causes a reduction of the corrosion resistance with some pitting on the machined surface. Ion release analyses are slightly higher in the implantoplasted samples but do not show statistically significant differences. It has been observed that the physiological environment reduces the fatigue life of the implants due to the penetration of hydrogen into the titanium forming titanium hydrides which embrittle the implant. These results should be taken into account by clinicians to determine the convenience of performing a treatment such as implantoplasty that reduces the mechanical behavior and increases the chemical degradation of the titanium dental implant.

The stainless steel bracket is the most commonly used fixed orthodontic component in orthodontic treatment. The brackets in the oral cavity for a long time can cause the release of metal ions, one of which is nickel ions. Food and beverages can change the pH of the oral environment, such as probiotic beverages. The probiotic beverage with Lactobacillus casei shirota strain has a pH of around 3 – 4,5. Low pH can increase nickel ion release and allow hypersensitivity reactions to occur. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Lactobacillus casei shirota strain probiotic beverage on the release of nickel ions from stainless steel brackets. This research was a laboratory experimental study with a post-test-only control group design with 10 samples. Each stainless-steel bracket sample was immersed in 50 ml of artificial saliva as a control group and 50 ml of Lactobacillus casei shirota strain probiotic beverage as a treatment group. AbstractThis study examined the mechanical and chemical properties of an experimental provisional restoration containing Sr-bioactive glass nanoparticles (Sr-BGNPs) compared to commercial provisional materials. The impact of substituting K2O for Na2O (0–100%) on the physico-chemical and bioactive properties of bioactive glass S53P4 was studied. The thermal properties were evaluated using differential thermal analysis and high-temperature microscopy. Ion release kinetics was measured in static and dynamic TRIS-buffer and SBF using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Substituting K2O for Na2O showed a mixed-alkali effect (MAE) for the thermal properties with a minimum value for the glass containing around 20% K2O. The hot-working range increased with the potassium content. The glass with 66% of Na2O replaced with K2O exhibited MAE in static TRIS by giving the biggest pH change and ion release at 24 h. The same glass showed the lowest pH and Si species release in dynamic SBF at the longest dissolution time, 72 h. Both single-alkali glasses showed higher in vitro bioactivity in dynamic SBF. The results provide tools for tailoring new bioactive glass compositions with desired properties.

This study aimed to prepare a resin based dental sealant loaded with novel bioactive glass formulated from (50 wt% calcium silicate and 50 wt% sodium silicate) with different percentages of fluorapatite. Four glass batches were formulated then characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis, X-ray powder diffraction analysis and Transmission electron microscopy. Density, microhardness and bioactivity testing after insertion in artificial saliva were done. Four bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA) based sealants loaded with the glass batch that showed the preeminent properties and silica fillers were prepared. The prepared sealants were compared to commercial sealants regarding flow, curing depth, compressive strength and microhardness. Sealant composition that showed comparable properties to that of the commercial sealant was selected for pH changes and ion release testing after immersion in artificial saliva for different time intervals. Results indicated amorphous nature, bioactive behavior and apatite forming ability of the tested glass batches. Experimental sealant revealed comparable tested properties with lower compressive strength compared to the commercial sealants at P < 0.001. The mean pH values of the tested sealants ranged from 6.75 to 6.35 with extended calcium and phosphorus ion release up to 90 days. It was concluded that the 85 wt% calcium silicate and sodium silicate with 15 wt% fluorapatite had the best trend regarding ion release and apatite forming ability. Sealant loaded with 65 wt% bioactive glass, 10 wt% sintered nanosilica and 10 wt% nanosilica had the best acceptable mechanical properties. The goal of this study was to evaluate the pH and the release of calcium from four calcium-silicate-based cements. Methods: Four materials were tested (ProClinic MTA; Angelus MTA; ProRoot MTA; Biodentine). The palatal canal root of acrylic upper molars was filled with each cement. Afterwards, they were set in phosphate-buffered saline. Measurements were taken by atomic adsorption spectroscopy (AAS) at 3, 24, 72, 168, 336, 672, and 1008 h. The pH was measured at the same timepoints. Kruskal–Wallis tests were carried out in each period, as the Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Shapiro–Wilk tests showed no parametric results. Results: Significant differences (p < 0.05) in calcium release were found at the 3-, 24-, and 72-hour evaluations. All of the analyzed groups presented a release of calcium ions up to 168 h, and the general tendency was to increase up to 672 h, with a maximum release of 25.45 mg/g in the ProRoot group. We could only observe significant differences (p < 0.05) in pH value over 168 h between the Biodentine (7.93) and Angelus MTA (7.31) groups. Conclusions: There were significant differences (p < 0.05) in calcium release. Statement of the Problem: Tooth discoloration in the form of staining is a common finding during conventional orthodontic treatment. Due to elevated esthetic standards, clinicians in the field of orthodontics are faced with increasing demands by patients to perform bleaching treatments while the appliances are still in place. Though the success of such treatments has been reported in literature, the effect of whitening agents on orthodontic appliances has not been evaluated. Increased ion release following corrosion of orthodontic brackets is considered a health hazard. Purpose: In this study, we measured the amount of ion release from steel brackets under home and office bleaching treatment in order to evaluate the safety of such treatments during orthodontic therapy. Materials and Method: In this experimental study, a total of 120 brackets were randomly divided into 3 groups. The first group was subjected to an office bleaching regimen (hydrogen peroxide 40%). The second group was subjected to a home bleaching treatment (carbamide peroxide 20%). The third group did not receive any bleaching treatment. The specimens of all groups were immersed in artificial saliva and after 30 days, the amount of released chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, and nickel ions was measured and compared using one way ANOVA. Results: The results showed that ion release was significantly different between the three groups (p Value> 0.05). For the chromium, iron, magnesium, and Nickel ion release the order was as follows: no bleaching < home bleaching < office bleaching. However, the copper ion release was greater in the group that received home bleaching. Conclusion: Ion release was enhanced when bleaching treatments were performed, with office bleaching having a more significant effect. Although the amounts of released ions were less than those permitted by WHO, we suggest that the clinicians recommend home bleaching for orthodontic patients that are seeking tooth whitening treatment. As the consumption of implants increases, so do the requirements for individual types of implants, for example, improved biocompatibility or longevity. Therefore, the nano‐modification of the titanium surface is often chosen. The aim was to characterize the modified surface with a focus on medical applications. The titanium surface was modified by the anodic oxidation method to form nanotubes. Subsequently, the material was characterized and analyzed for medical applications—surface morphology, surface wettability, chemical composition, and release of ions into biological fluids. A human gingival fibroblasts (HGFb) cell line was used in the viability study. A homogeneous layer of nanotubes of defined dimensions was formed on the titanium surface, ensuring the material's biocompatibility—the preparation conditions influence the resulting properties of the nanostructured surface. Nanostructured titanium exhibited more suitable characteristics (e.g., wettability, roughness, ion release) for biological applications than compared to pure titanium. It was possible to understand the behavior of the modified layer on the titanium surface and its effect on cell behavior. Endo-periodontal lesions are challenging clinical situations where both the supporting tissues and the root canal of the same tooth are infected. In the present study, chlorhexidine (CHX)-loaded calcium hydroxide (CH) pastes were used as intracanal medications (ICMs). They were prepared and tested on pathogens found in both the root canal and the periodontal pocket. Exposure to 0.5% and 1% CHX-loaded ICMs decreased the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis and was effective in eradicating or inhibiting an Enterococcus faecalis biofilm. CH was injected into the root canal of extracted human teeth immersed in deionized water. CHX-loaded ICMs resulted in the transradicular diffusion of active components outside the tooth through the apex and the lateral dentinal tubules, as shown by the release of CHX (from 3.99 µg/mL to 51.28 µg/mL) and changes in pH (from 6.63 to 8.18) and calcium concentrations (from 2.42 ppm to 14.67 ppm) after 7 days. The 0.5% CHX-loaded ICM was non-toxic and reduced the release of IL-6 by periodontal cells stimulated by P. gingivalis lipopolysaccharides. Results indicate that the root canal may serve as a reservoir for periodontal drug delivery and that CHX-based ICMs can be an adjuvant for the control of infections and inflammation in endo-periodontal lesions. OBJECTIVE: Sodium fluoride (NaF) is commonly used in oral hygiene products, leading to corrosion and reduced archwire properties. In addition, ion release can cause allergies and become toxic to the oral environment. This research aimed to observe the Nickel (Ni) and Copper (Cu) ions released that affected initial corrosion as deflection and surface roughness changed in the Copper‑Nickel‑Titanium (CuNiTi) archwire. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The total samples were 54 copper‑nickel‑titanium (CuNiTi‑Tanzo, American orthodontic®) archwires immersed in three solutions. Artificial saliva was used in the control group NaF 0.05%, and a NaF 0.15% solution was used in the intervention groups (n = 6). The groups were divided into three observation times (two, four, and six weeks). Cu and Ni ions released, deflection, the surface roughness of the archwires, and solution acidities were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: Ni and Cu ion release and surface roughness of the CuNiTi archwires significantly increased as the NaF concentration increased. The Ni ion release improved along the immersion period; the opposite was true for the Cu ion release. The solutions became more alkaline after the CuNiTi archwires were immersed. The pH and the archwires’ deflections of the three solutions did not show significant differences. CONCLUSION: The NaF increased Cu‑Ni ion release and surface roughness but not the deflection force of the CuNiTi. The increase was affected by the concentration and duration of immersion. Non-toxic biomedical HEAs by powder metallurgy methods have been scarcely studied despite their promising mechanical and biological behaviors. This work studied the microstructural, mechanical, electrochemical, and ion release effects of the Ti/Ta ratio on three porous Ti–Nb–Zr–Ta (TNZT) alloys. The microstructure of the TNZT alloys consisted of semi-equiaxed and micrometric BCC-phases (matrix) with lower contents of HCP phase. Elastic moduli (82–91 GPa), hardness (373–430 HVN), ultimate bending (225–475 MPa), and tensile (119–256 MPa) strength, electrochemical corrosion (4.5–9.6 μm year−1), and ion release (toxicity, 0.9–1.1 μm year−1) were within acceptable limits for implant biomaterials. Increasing the Ti content (and decreasing Ta) was advantageous for improving mechanical strengthening and reducing the elastic modulus. The medium value of elastic modulus may be beneficial to reduce the mechanical mismatch between the implant and the organic tissue. However, the corrosion rate and metallic ion release increased as a function of the Ti content. Besides, the alloy with the lowest Ti content (highest Ta content) showed local corrosion. Based on the above, the porous TNZT alloys with medium and highest Ti contents (30 and 35 wt%) were demonstrated as promising candidates for biomedical implant applications.
