- Abstract
Peter Karns holds two records for best finishes by an American in biathlon set during the 1972 Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo. He placed 14th in the 20-kilometer biathlon and was on the U.S. relay team that placed sixth in the biathlon relay. These records still stand today. Karns competed with the University team from 1964-1967. In the NCAA championships, he placed third in 1965 and second in 1966. His favorite event was cross-country, in which he placed fourth in the NCAA in 1966. That year he was also named NCAA All-American. Prior to his Olympic experience, he was a two-time national champion in the U.S. biathlon competition. Karns was a coach for the U.S. biathlon team from 1973-1976 and also coached the team for the 1976 Games in Innsbruck, Austria. - Abstract
The Clark Parkinson collection consists of ten digital scans made from color and black and white prints loaned to the Special Collections department by Dean Roberts for the Utah Ski Archives Ski Affair. High-resolution scans were made of the original prints and they were then returned to the donor. Clark Parkinson is the longest-tenured employee at Park City Mountain Resort. He began teaching skiing there in 1962, the year the resort opened. He joined the Intermountain Ski Instructors Association in 1966, and has been actively involved in the organization and administration of the group since that time, serving as secretary, board member, and ultimately, president. He is also a lifetime member of the Professional Ski Instructors Association, and a charter member of the Utah Ski Archives. - Abstract
The Keith Lange collection consists of sixteen digital scans of color and black and white prints loaned to the Special Collections Dept. for scanning in November 2003. The images document his career as a skier, ski instructor, ski jumper, and member of professional ski organizations. Mr. Lange has been involved in professional associations such as the Intermountain Ski Instructors Association, and the Professional Ski Instructors Association, both of which he served as president. He has coached ski racers and served as a consultant for ski films, and, as a member of the US Army's 10th Mountain Division, trained troops on mountain survival techniques. He was a member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and was honored by President Gerald Ford. Alton Crane Melville (1904-1966) served as president of the NSA and was an avid skier and participant in many ski organizations. The photograph collection reflects Melville's love of skiing, teaching, and membership in various organizations. - Abstract
Marvin Melville is an internationally well-decorated and respected skier. Melville skied for the Granite High School, University of Utah, 1958 United States Olympic Alpine, and 1960 F.I.S. ski teams. In 1959, Marvin Melville became the N.C.A.A. champion in Downhill, Slalom and Combined ski events. In addition to Melville's renown as a competitive skier, he was the respected coach of the 1964 Women's Olympic Ski Team and University of Utah Ski Team. In honor of his achievements, Melville was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1990., Box one and two include images of Marvin Melville skiing in competitions and training. Most of the inventory descriptions were taken from the labels on the back of the images. The photographs in box three were scanned from three of Marvin Melville's scrapbooks held in Manuscript's reserve collection. The bulk of the photos are simply portraits of Doctors who belonged to the association. There is a small group of photos that are from events and have various people in them. The photographs have been filed in shoe boxes alphabetically except for the small group of photos to large for the shoe boxes. These photos are filed in a regular box. Where possible the doctors' specialty has been written with the name. The pictures range in date from the 1940s to the 1980s. - Abstract
This collection details the life of John Hamilton Morgan including his participation in the Civil War and service as the L.D.S. Mission President of the Southern States mission. The collection also details a great deal of the history of the Morgan family in early Utah and Colorado. The first eight folders of the collection consist of identified portraits of the Morgan family, acquaintances, and converts to the Mormon Church. Folder nine includes photographs of the 123rd Regiment flag, soldiers and other images relating to the Civil War. Folders ten and eleven contain photographs of L.D.S. missionaries, groups, and other images relating to the Southern States mission, of which John Morgan was the President. The remaining folders contain a variety of photographs of buildings in Manassa and Pueblo, Colorado. The Emigration Canyon history photograph collection contains images of cabins, hotels, railroads, and early pioneers and ranchers in Emigration Canyon. The first folder is dedicated to the Pinecrest Inn and its' construction. The majority of the images in folder two depict quarries and the Emigration Canyon Railroad; folder three contains images of primary and secondary residences and occupants. Folder four contains images of businesses located in Emigration Canyon, including Wagener Brewery and Ruth's Diner, as well as photos of historical canyon sites. The remaining folders contain a variety of images ranging from 18th century residences to new land development. The majority of the images were labeled and the descriptions found below were taken from the original photographs. Don Lind graduated from the University of Utah in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. He later did doctoral work at the University of Berkeley where he received his Ph.D. in High Nuclear Physics. Lind did experimental work with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1966. In 1985 Lind retired as an astronaut to teach Physics at Utah State University. This collection contains research materials regarding experiments conducted by Lind in association with NASA during his tenure as professor at Utah State University. These experiments include the Interstellar Gas Experiment (1984-1990) and Space Lab III (Auroral Observations, 1983-1987).
