Conventional geodetic methods rely on point measurements, which have drawbacks for detecting and tracking geologic disasters at specific locations. In this study, the time series Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) approach was incorporated to estimate non-linear surface deformation caused by tectonic, shoreline reclamation, and other anthropogenic activities in economically important urban regions of Pakistan's southern coast, which possesses around 270 km. The shoreline is extended from the low-populated area on the premises of the Hub River in the west to the highly populated Karachi City and Eastern Industrial Zone, where we collected the Sentinel-1A C-band data from 2017 to 2023 to address urban security and threats to human life and property. The main advantage of opting for the non-linear persistent scatterer interferometric SAR (PSInSAR) approach for this study is that it exposes minute movements without any prior consideration of conventional monitoring techniques, making it valid in continuously varying regions. An average vertical displacement range of − 170 to + 82 mm per year was found, which was used to investigate the potential correlation with the most effective causative parameters of deformation. The densely populated areas of the study area experience an annual subsidence of 170 mm, and the less populated western region experiences an uplift of 82 mm annually. Land deformation varies along the coast of the study area, where the eastern region is highly reclaimed and is affected by erosion. Groundwater table-depleting regions experienced high levels of land subsidence, and tectonic activities controlled vertical displacement in the region. Major variation was detected after an earthquake occurred along fault lines. This study was designed because a non-linear approach is required to address ground movement activities acutely, and it will make it possible to plan surface infrastructure and handle issues brought on by subsidence more effectively. The realization of a harmonious relationship between the natural environment and economic development has always been the unremitting pursuit of traditional mineral resource-based cities. With rich reserves of iron and coal ore resources, Laiwu has become an important steel production base in Shandong Province in China, after several decades of industrial development. However, some serious environmental problems have occurred with the quick development of local steel industries, with ground subsidence and consequent secondary disasters as the most representative ones. To better evaluate possible ground collapse risk, comprehensive approaches incorporating the common deformation monitoring with small-baseline subset (SBAS)-synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) technique, environmental factors analysis, and risk evaluation are designed here with ALOS PALSAR and Sentinel-1 SAR observations. A retrospect on the ground deformation process indicates that ground deformation has largely decreased by around 51.57% in area but increased on average by around −5.4 mm/year in magnitude over the observation period of Sentinel-1 (30 July 2015 to 22 August 2022), compared to that of ALOS PALSAR (17 January 2007 to 28 October 2010). To better reveal the potential triggering mechanism, environmental factors are also utilized and conjointly analyzed with the ground deformation time series. These analysis results indicate that the ground deformation signals are highly correlated with human industrial activities, such underground mining, and the operation of manual infrastructures (landfill, tailing pond, and so on). In addition, the evaluation demonstrates that the area with potential collapse risk (levels of medium, high, and extremely high) occupies around 8.19 km2, approximately 0.86% of the whole study region. This study sheds a bright light on the safety guarantee for the industrial operation and the ecologically friendly urban development of traditional steel production industrial cities in China. In sandy cobble stratum, the contents of rock blocks along the tunnel line present to be different. The tunneling-induced ground deformation under different rock contents is perceived as a main concern. Considering the heterogeneity of ground material, the meso-scale numerical models of sandy cobble strata were used to simulate tunnel excavation, in which the rock blocks and soil matrix were treated as separated constituents. By comparing the ground stress of simulation results with that of theoretical values, the applicability of meso-scale models was verified. The simulation results show that the rock content has a significant effect on the ground deformation performance. With the increase of rock content from 0 to 50%, the maximum ground settlement and the expansion of plastic zone gradually decreases, and the variation rule of the maximum ground settlement with rock content can be described by a normal distribution function. Meanwhile, the tunnel deformation pattern changes from non-uniform convergence to uniform convergence. It is also found that the relationship between the maximum subsurface settlement or the width coefficient of subsurface settlement trough and subsurface depth can be described by a power function, respectively. Persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) has been proven to be a robust method for studying complex and dynamic phenomena such as ground displacement over time. Proper visualization of PSI measurements is both crucial and challenging from a cartographic standpoint. This study focuses on the development of an interactive cartographic web map application, providing suitable visualization of PSI data, and exploring their geographic, cartographic, spatial, and temporal attributes. To this end, PSI datasets, generalized at different resolutions, are visualized in eight predefined cartographic scales. A multiscale generalization algorithm is proposed. The automation of this procedure, spurred by the development of a web application, offers users the flexibility to properly visualize PSI datasets according to the specific cartographic scale. Additionally, the web map application provides a toolset, offering state-of-the-art cartographic approaches for exploring PSI datasets. This toolset consists of exploration, measurement, filtering (based on the point's spatial attributes), and exporting tools customized for PSI measurement. Furthermore, a graph tool, offering users the capability to interactively plot PSI time-series and investigate the evolution of ground deformation over time, has been developed and integrated into the web interface. This study reflects the need for appropriate visualization of PSI datasets at different cartographic scales. It is shown that each original PSI dataset possesses a suitable cartographic scale at which it should be visualized. Innovative cartographic approaches, such as web applications, can prove to be effective tools for users working in the domain of mapping and monitoring the dynamic behavior of surface motion. Abstract Etna is a highly active volcano with frequent eruptions and is closely observed with different monitoring techniques. One of the monitoring methods is a network of short-base tiltmeters that provides continuous control of ground deformation. Since 1996, this network has been integrated with a long-base fluid tiltmeter installed in two 80 m long connected tunnels at the high-altitude (2850 m a.s.l.) volcanological observatory of Pizzi Deneri (PDN) located on the volcano’s summit. The instrumentation was devised with an innovative configuration composed of mercury, free to move along the entire length of the tiltmeter in response to the ground tilt, and laser sensors to measure the changes in the mercury levels. In this study, for the first time, we present the entire 25-year series of data recorded by this instrumentation. During this long interval, the Etna volcano was characterized by numerous major eruptions due to dyke intrusions. The tilt variations recorded in the short-term during the rapid intrusive phases are presented and discussed. These signals contributed both to the modeling of eruptive processes, and in particular in the case of the 2002–2003 eruption, to the real-time understanding of the ongoing eruptive phenomenon, supporting the correct hazard assessment. In the medium-long term (years to decades), we show and discuss that the PDN signal is mainly related to the marked sliding of the entire eastern sector of the volcano. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Introduction On November 21, 2022, a magnitude Mw 5.6 earthquake struck Cianjur Regency in the West Java Province of Indonesia. It was followed by at least 512 aftershocks that persisted from November to June 2023. This seismic event occurred in an area previously unrecognized as an active fault zone. The consequences of this earthquake in Cianjur were severe, leading to both loss of life and extensive structural damage. The substantial damage to buildings was likely a result of abrupt alterations in the local topography due to surface deformation effects. Objectives This research endeavor aims to spatially determine the patterns of ground surface deformation and its relationship with local geomorphological setting due to earthquakes in Cianjur in 2022. Methods In this study we conduct seismological analysis of 45 seismic stations, statistical analysis of mainshock and aftershocks data, RADAR Sentinel-1 imagery and employed the DInSAR methodology. Field survey was also conducted to determine the geomorphological characteristics in the study area. Results The outcomes disclosed that the deformation encompassed both subsidence and uplift. The results signify that there was subsidence deformation in the vicinity of Cianjur and its environs during the primary earthquake on November 21, 2022, with an average deformation value of approximately -5 cm. In contrast, the measured deformation during the aftershocks exhibited uplift deformation, with an average value of 10 cm. The examination of deformation patterns amid the 2022 Cianjur earthquake sequence detects elevated deformation values in the vicinity of Cugenang district, with an orientation running from northwest to southeast. The geomorphological investigation conducted indicates that the region of Cianjur encompasses a variety of landforms, such as volcanic, structural, fluvial, and denudational. These landforms exhibit distinct responses to seismic activities. Co-seismic hazards, such as landslides frequently occur as a consequence of seismic events in mountainous terrain. Main Conclusions Spatio-temporal variation of ground deformation could arise from various causes, such as the number and distribution of aftershocks, stress redistribution, fault interactions, secondary effects, and local geological settings. The mainshocks release accumulated stress along a fault, resulting in particular types of deformation, whereas aftershocks may redistribute stress exhibiting on adjacent faults. Secondary effects triggered by aftershocks, coupled with local geological and geomorphological conditions, further contribute to the diverse patterns of ground deformation observed during seismic events. The results of the study revealed that ground deformation had the greatest impact on fluvial, volcanic, and denudational processes, resulting in notable subsidence and uplift in specific regions. The occurrence and magnitude of co-seismic landslides were triggered by both mainshock and aftershock events, which occurred on weathered geological materials. These effects were further amplified by the simultaneous presence of the rainy season. Implications The knowledge gained from this research can be applied to evaluate the impacts of earthquakes and to proactively reduce future risks.

The western Galápagos islands of Fernandina and Isabela comprise six active volcanoes that have deformed since first observed by satellite radar in the early 1990s. We analyse new (2015–2022) displacement time series at Alcedo, Cerro Azul, Darwin, Fernandina, Sierra Negra, and Wolf volcanoes in the context of deformation and unrest since 1992. Previous discussions of volcano deformation have focused on eruptions, major intrusive episodes, and the structure of sub-volcanic systems. We discuss the full geodetic record of deformation and show that the style of eruptions, characteristics of unrest and deformation are distinctive at each volcano. These characteristic differences in deformation and unrest styles between the volcanoes have persisted for at least three decades, since the first satellite radar measurements. These consistent differences in shallow magma storage and eruptive dynamics reflect the influence of “top-down” factors and evolutionary stage, providing a basis to understand volcanic unrest here, and to inform monitoring strategies.

Electronic distance measurements (EDM) represent one of the first methods to detect ground deformation on volcanoes. Used since 1964, they enable acquiring precise distance measurements, whose time repetition may highlight changes related to volcanic activity. This technique was widely used on volcanoes from the 1970s to the early 2000s and has been used many times to model position, geometry, and volumes of magmatic and hydrothermal sources. This paper reports the EDM experiences, results and data acquired on Sicilian volcanoes (Etna, Vulcano, Stromboli and Pantelleria) from the early 1970s, which have played a major role in the birth of the volcano-geodesy for volcanic process knowledge, making the Sicilian volcanoes among those with the longest geodetic record in the world. Deformation along a subway rail network is related to the safe operation of the subway and the stability of construction facilities on the surface, making long-term deformation monitoring imperative. Long-term monitoring of surface deformation along the subway network and statistical analysis of the overall deformation situation are lacking in China. Therefore, targeting 35 Chinese cities whose subway mileage exceeds 50 km, we extracted their surface deformation along subway networks between 2018 and 2022, using spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) technology and Sentinel-1 satellite data. We verified the results with the continuous global navigation satellite system (GNSS) stations' data and found that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the InSAR results was 3.75 mm/year. Statistical analysis showed that ground subsidence along the subways was more prominent in Beijing, Tianjin, and other areas in the North China Plain, namely Kunming (which is dominated by karst landforms), as well as Shanghai, Guangzhou, Qingdao, and other coastal cities. In addition, an analysis revealed that the severity of surface subsidence correlated positively with a city's gross domestic product (GDP) with a Pearson correlation of 0.787, since the higher the GDP, the more frequent the construction and maintenance of subway, and the more commuters there are, which in turn exacerbates the disturbance to the surface. Additionally, the type of land cover also affects the ground deformation. Our findings provide a reference for constructing, operating, and maintaining the urban subway systems in China. This study aims to investigate the occurrence of surface displacements in the Canto do Amaro (CAM) onshore oil field, situated in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, using Sentinel-1 data. The persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) technique was used to perform the analysis based on 42 Sentinel-1 images, acquired from 23 July 2020 to 21 December 2021. Moreover, information regarding the structural geology of the study area was collected by referencing existing literature datasets. Additionally, a study of the water, gas, and oil production dynamics in the research site was conducted, employing statistical analysis of publicly available well production data. The PSI points results were geospatially correlated with the closest oil well production data and the structural geology information. The PSI results indicate displacement rates from −20.93 mm/year up to 14.63 mm/year in the CAM region. However, approximately 90% of the deformation remained in the range of −5.50 mm/year to 4.95 mm/year, indicating low levels of ground displacement in the designated research area. No geospatial correlation was found between the oil production data and the zones of maximum deformation. In turn, ground displacement demonstrates geospatial correlation with geological structures such as strike-slip and rift faults, suggesting a tectonic movement processes. The PSI results provided a comprehensive overview of ground displacement in the Canto do Amaro field, with millimeter-level accuracy and highlighting its potential as a complementary tool to field investigations. Volcanic islands are often subject to flank instability, resulting from a combination of magmatic intrusions along rift zones and gravitational spreading causing extensional faulting at the surface. Here, we study the Koaʻe fault system (KFS), located south of the summit caldera of Kīlauea volcano in Hawaiʻi, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, prone to active faulting, episodic dike intrusions, and flank instability. Two rift zones and the KFS are major structures controlling volcanic flank instability and magma propagation. Although several magmatic intrusions occurred over the KFS, the link between these faults, two nearby rift zones and the flank instability, is still poorly studied. To better characterize the KFS and its structural linkage with the surrounding fault and rift zones, we performed a detailed structural analysis of the extensional fault system, coupled with a helicopter photogrammetric survey, covering part of the south flank of Kīlauea. We generated a high-resolution DEM (~ 8 cm) and orthomosaic (~ 4 cm) to map the fracture field in detail. We also collected ~ 1000 ground structural measurements of extensional fractures during our three field missions (2019, 2022, and 2023). We observed many small, interconnected grabens, monoclines, rollover structures, and en-echelon fractures that were in part previously undocumented. We estimate the cumulative displacement rate across the KFS during the last 600 ~ 700 years and found a decrease toward the west of the horizontal component from 2 to 6 cm per year, consistent with GNSS data. Integrating morphology observations, fault mapping, and kinematic measurements, we propose a new kinematic model of the upper part of the Kīlauea's south flank, suggesting a clockwise rotation and a translation of a triangular wedge. This wedge is bordered by the extensional structures (ERZ, SWRZ, and the KFS), largely influenced by gravitational spreading. These findings illustrate a structural linkage between the two rift zones and the KFS, the latter being episodically affected by dike intrusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to mitigate ground deformation during shield construction in both upper soft and lower hard strata of coastal areas, a numerical simulation was executed. This simulation assessed surface deformation under varying stratum ratios, grouting pressures, and earth bin pressures. The evaluation was primarily based on the amount of ground deformation, which revealed that hard rock strata offer superior settlement control compared to soft rock strata. The excavation of the right tunnel line increased disturbance to the left line at higher stratum ratios. Surface deformation demonstrated a linear correlation with earth pressure, with 130 kPa identified as the optimal point. Higher pressures resulted in extrusion deformation and ground uplift. Grouting pressure had a minimal impact on stratum deformation over time. The stratum ratio exerted the most significant influence on settlement, followed by earth pressure, with grouting pressure having the least impact. In the context of coastal tunnel construction, hard rock excavation is favored. Earth pressure must be balanced to prevent subsidence or uplift, while excessive grouting pressure does not significantly reduce subsidence. A fully automated processing system for measuring long-term ground deformation time series and deformation rates frame-by-frame using the Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) processing technique was developed and tested. Among the several factors that affect DInSAR's precision, such as temporal decorrelation and atmospheric noise, it was observed that seasonal spatial-temporal variability in radar penetration depth is the greatest contributor to the loss of precision of the long-term deformation rate measurement. This spatial-temporal signal is described for a specific region in the northern US; however, it is widely observed in multiple regions. In these regions, a gradual penetration depth increase is observed in fall and winter, and an abrupt penetration depth decrease is observed in spring. The latter effect is likely caused by rapid melting of ice and snow that, at the same time, significantly reduces interferometric coherence. Within a specific geographic region, radar penetration depth spatially varies proportionally to the elevation due to an elevation-dependent temperature gradient, producing artifacts that correlate well with the topography. This signal does not extend to high-elevation regions (above ~2500 m) that do not experience seasonal thawing, which allows for distinguishing it from the topography-dependent atmospheric signals. Without accounting for the spatial-temporal variability in radar penetration depth, deformation time series in these areas can contain either an annual periodic signal with an amplitude of over 0.1 m or, if the abrupt penetration depth decrease produced by melting is not resolved due to lower coherence, an erroneous interannual trend. Spatial-temporal variability in radar penetration depth needs to be better understood and corrected to improve the precision of long-term deformation rate products, particularly in regions susceptible to seasonal freezing and thawing. This study employs advanced synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques, specifically the small baseline subset (SBAS) method, to analyze ground deformation dynamics on Aegina, a volcanic island within the Hellenic Volcanic Arc. Using Sentinel-1 satellite data spanning January 2016 to May 2023, this research reveals different deformation behaviors. The towns of Aegina and Saint Marina portray regions of stability, contrasting with central areas exhibiting subsidence rates of up to 1 cm/year. The absence of deformation consistent with volcanic activity on Aegina Island aligns with geological records and limited seismic activity, attributing the observed subsidence processes to settlement phenomena from past volcanic events and regional geothermal activity. These findings reinforce the need for continuous monitoring of the volcanic islands located in the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, providing important insights for local risk management, and contributing to our broader understanding of geodynamic and volcanic processes. Monitoring ground deformation in industrial parks is of great importance for the economic development of urban areas. However, limited research has been conducted on the deformation mechanism in industrial parks, and there is a lack of integrated monitoring and prediction models. Therefore, this study proposes a comprehensive monitoring and prediction model for industrial parks, utilizing time-series Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology and the Whale Optimization Algorithm-Back Propagation (WOA-BP) neural network algorithm. Taking Yinxi Industrial Park in Baiyin District as a case study, we used 68 scenes of Sentinel-1A ascending and descending orbit data from June 2018 to April 2021. The Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers-Permanent Scatterers (StaMPS-PS) and the Small Baseline Subsets-Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (SBAS-InSAR) technologies were employed to obtain the surface deformation information of the park. The deformation information obtained by the two technologies was cross-validated in terms of temporal and spatial distribution, and the vertical and east–west deformation of the park was obtained by combining the ascending and descending orbit data. The results show that the deformation feature points in the line of sight (LOS) direction obtained by the two technologies have a high consistency in spatial distribution, using the ascending orbit data as an example. Additionally, the SBAS-InSAR technology was used to obtain the east–west and vertical deformation results of the park after merging the ascending and descending orbit data for the same period. It was found that the park is mainly affected by vertical deformation, with a maximum subsidence rate of 14.67 mm/yr. The subsidence areas correspond to the deformation positions observed in field survey photos. Based on the ascending orbit deformation data, the two technologies were validated with 585 points of the same latitude and longitude, and the coefficient of determination R2 was found to be 0.82, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.20 mm/a. The deformation rates were also highly consistent. Due to the 47% increase in the number of sampling points provided by the StaMPS-PS technique compared to the SBAS-InSAR technique, the former was found to be more applicable in the industrial park. Based on the ground deformation mechanism in the park, we combined the StaMPS-PS technique with the WOA-BP neural network to construct a deformation zone prediction model. We conducted predictive studies on the deformation zones of buildings and roads within the park, and the results showed that the WOA-optimized BP neural network achieved higher accuracy and lower overall error compared to the unoptimized network. Finally, we analyzed and discussed the geological conditions and inducing factors of ground deformation in the park, providing a reference for a better understanding of the deformation mechanism and early warning of disasters in the industrial park. Land subsidence is recognized as one of the hazards that threaten Metro Manila, Philippines, and other major urban areas worldwide. It has become a significant global issue caused by excessive groundwater extraction, rapid urbanization, and natural sediment compaction, exacerbated by climate change through rising sea levels. This paper presents vertical ground motion rates in Philippine metropolitan cities using Sentinel-1 InSAR time series analysis from 2014 to 2020 through UK COMET’s LiCSAR products and the LiCSBAS package of Morishita et al. (2020). The results revealed a maximum subsidence rate of 109 mm/yr in Bulacan Province in Greater Manila. For the first time, this paper also presents ground motion estimates and the following maximum subsidence rates for other Philippine metropolitan cities: 11 mm/yr in Metro Cebu, 38 mm/yr in Metro Davao, 9 mm/yr in Metro Iloilo, and 29 mm/yr in Legazpi City. Areas with remarkably high subsidence rates are observed as circular to elliptical deformation features in vertical motion maps. Sinking areas mostly coincide with industrial and commercial complexes evident as a contiguous distribution of large and expansive man-made structures with distinct radar reflections. Monitoring this hazard is crucial as it increases the risk of floods, building and infrastructure damage, and economic loss, and exposes residents along the coast to worsening tidal incursions and storm surges due to climate change. InSAR is proposed here as a targeted, long-term deformation monitoring tool, especially related to groundwater usage.

This study addresses the drought phenomenon that affected the Po River, north of Italy, by jointly exploiting methods based on measurements remotely sensed by the European Sentinel-1 C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and meteo-climatological information derived from both in situ and satellite datasets. The SAR methods consist of a baseline approach, which estimates the water-covered area from dual-polarized SAR imagery using a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) approach, augmented with ancillary vertical ground displacement information derived from SAR interferometry (InSAR). The meteo-climatological information includes hydrometric water level, rainfall data, and the Standard Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Experimental results, obtained using a seven-year time series of SAR scenes collected over the Po River close to the city of Piacenza and contrasted with ancillary external information, demonstrate the soundness of the proposed SAR-based added-value products and their satisfactory accuracy in emphasizing both seasonal trends and the drought phenomena occurred in the area. This paves the way for an operational use of SAR measurements to monitor the water-covered area of the Po River and potentially other similar environments.

Abstract Inflations at active volcanoes are indicators of overpressure in the subsurface, which is known to be a phenomenon that precedes eruptions. Volcanic overpressure is induced by the injection of magmatic fluids, accumulated magma, or heat supply from greater depths. Azuma volcano (Japan) has experienced several episodes of volcanic unrest with increases in seismicity at the depth of the hydrothermal system, implying a potential increase in phreatic eruptions. The time series of interferometric synthetic aperture radar data, associated with the unrest episodes occurring in 2014–2015 and 2018–2019, revealed spatiotemporal variations of inflation episodes, centered around Oana crater, the most active fumarole of Azuma volcano. The modeled best-fit geometry of the elongated pressure source for the local deformation has the same dip as the overlying topographic slope direction and angle around Oana crater, suggesting the existence of topography-correlated layered structures within the hydrothermal system. In contrast, the broader deformation associated with the 2014–2015 unrest was explained by the overpressure of a horizontal flat source at 360–1500 m below sea level, showing the similar depth of the top as the conductive low-resistivity or low-viscosity body suggested by previous studies. The unrest episodes were thus interpreted as resulting mainly from the supply of magmatic fluids, or the transfer of heat from greater depths. Our study helps in understanding the shallow structure of this volcanic system and contributes to evaluating the potential for forthcoming eruptions in Azuma volcano. Graphical Abstract

On July 20, 2021, the northern Henan Province was hit by a historically rare, exceptionally heavy rainstorm (“7.20” Rainstorm Event), accompanied by severe urban flooding, flash floods, landslides, and other multiple disasters, resulting in significant casualties and property losses. On the other hand, the long-term overexploitation of groundwater since the last century has led to severe ground subsidence in the same area. We apply the intensity information of Sentinel-1 SAR images to extract the large-scale flood inundation area and their phase information to measure the ground deformation. Since heavy precipitations can recharge groundwater, the relationship between flood inundation, groundwater level change, and ground deformation is analyzed. The results show that the flood inundation areas are mainly distributed along the major rivers due to river overflowing, while heavy precipitation led to the rise of groundwater levels, and there was a significant amount of subsidence mitigation and surface uplift across the region due to the groundwater recovery. This study demonstrates the contribution of radar remote sensing to analyze the mechanism of groundwater recharge and subsidence mitigation benefited by rainstorm events and provides a technical reference to similar circumstances.

[Objective] During the process of EPB SC (earth pressure balanced shield construction), inevitable soil disturbances occur, causing ground deformation and subsequently impacting the surrounding built environment negatively. Therefore, conducting research on the ground deformation caused by EPB SC holds significant importance. [Method] By integrating various relevant literatures, the research is centered around the connections between each stage of the construction. The working mechanism of EPC SC is clarified, the causes of ground deformation are studied from three aspects: tunnel geometry factors, soil geological conditions, and shield tunneling parameters. The prediction methods for ground deformation caused by EPC SC are discussed, the applicability and pros and cons of each method are analyzed. Based on the causes of deformation and deformation prediction, control measures for ground deformation caused by EPB SC are listed. The shortcomings in the research of EPB SC are pointed out, and the future development direction of EPB SC is discussed. [Result & Conclusion] The causes of ground deformation induced by EPB SC are tunnel geometry factors, soil geological conditions, and shield tunneling parameters. The prediction methods for ground deformation caused by EPC SC include empirical formula method, theoretical analysis method, numerical simulation method of finite elements and finite difference, model test method, and artificial intelligence method. Based on the monitoring of ground deformation, continuously adjusting the shield parameters during construction is an effective method to control ground deformation by EPB shield.

In recent years, photovoltaic power generation and greenhouse planting (PPG&GP) have become effective approaches for reconstructing and restoring the ecological environment of old coal-mining industry bases, such as Xintai City. However, the ecological impacts or improvements of the PPG&GP projects and their daily operations on the local environment are still unclear. To solve these problems, this study retrieved the ground deformation velocities and time series of the study region by performing the Small-Baseline Subset (SBAS)-Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique on the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) PALSAR and Sentinel-1 SAR datasets. With these deformation results, the spatial analysis indicated that the area of the subsidence region within the PPG&GP projects reached 10.70 km2, with a magnitude of approximately −21.61 ± 12.10 mm/yr. Also, even though the ground deformations and their temporal changes were both visible in the construction and operation stages of the PPG&GP projects, the temporal analysis demonstrated that most observation points finally entered into the stationary phases in the late stage of the observation period. This phenomenon validated the effectiveness of the PPG&GP projects in enhancing the ground surface stability in coal-mining areas. Additionally, the precipitation, geological structure, increased coal-mining depths, and emergent agricultural modes were assumed to be the major impact factors controlling the ground deformation within the local PPG&GP projects. Finally, a novel risk assessment method with a designed index of IRA was utilized to classify the ground subsidence risks of the PPG&GP projects into three levels: Low (69.7%), Medium (16.9%), and High (9.4%). This study sheds a bright light on the ecological monitoring and risk management of the burgeoning industrial and agricultural infrastructures, such as the PPG&GP projects, constructed upon the traditional coal-mining areas in China from a multi-temporal InSAR perspective. Inflation of viscous magma intrusions in Earth's shallow crust often induces strain and fracturing within heterogeneous host rocks and dome‐shaped ground deformation. Most geodetic models nevertheless consider homogeneous, isotropic, and linear‐elastic media wherein stress patterns indicate the potential for failure, but without simulating actual fracturing. We present a two‐dimensional Discrete Element Method (DEM) application to simulate magma recharge in a pre‐existing laccolith intrusion. In DEM models, fractures can propagate during simulations. We systematically investigate the effect of the host rock toughness (resistance to fracturing), stiffness (resistance to deformation) and the intrusion depth, on intrusion‐induced stress, strain, displacement and spatial fracture distribution. Our results show that the spatial fracture distribution varies between two end‐members: (a) for high stiffness or low toughness host rock or a shallow intrusion: extensive cracking, multiple vertical surface fractures propagating downward and two inward‐dipping highly cracked shear zones that connect the intrusion tip with the surface; and (b) for low stiffness or high toughness host rock or a deeper intrusion: limited cracking, one central vertical fracture initiated at the surface, and two inward‐dipping fractures at the intrusion tips. Abrupt increases in surface displacement magnitude occur in response to fracturing, even at constant magma injection rates. Our modeling application provides a novel approach to considering host rock mechanical strength and fracturing during viscous magma intrusion and associated dome‐shaped ground deformation, with important implications for interpreting geodetic signals at active volcanoes and the exploitation of geothermal reservoirs and mineral deposits. Plain Language Summary: Most viscous magmas are stored and solidified in the upper 1–2 km of Earth's crust and rarely reach the surface to produce explosive volcanic eruptions. At such shallow depths, these viscous magmas often form intrusions with a flat base and dome‐shaped roof, or "laccoliths." To accommodate the emplaced volume, the deformation of the host rock produces dome‐shaped ground uplift at the surface. Geological and geophysical observations show that laccolith emplacement often coincides with intense host rock fracturing. However, most of the numerical laccolith emplacement models ignore that fracturing and severely simplify the mechanical response of the host rock. To assess the effect of host rock fracturing on ground deformation, we designed a two‐dimensional Discrete Element Method (DEM) application, which can simulate the fracturing of the host rock during magma injection. We found that varying the strength of the host rock and/or the intrusion depth controls the spatial distribution of fracturing and magnitude of the ground uplift. Our results help to understand complex interplays between the depth of magma injection and the mechanical properties of host rocks, and to improve the modeling tools used to routinely monitor magmatic activity. Mechanisms responsible for the caving of the strata overlying Chengchao Iron Mine were investigated by analyzing in situ deformation monitoring results and the distinctive engineering geological conditions. The results indicated that waste rocks caved from the overlying host strata and the large-scale sliding rocks at the footwall near the goaf continuously flow towards the caved zone when surrounding rocks of goaf are relatively broken. As a result, a large air gap does not generally form above the caved zone. In this case, the strata overlying the goaf do not globally cave upwards to the surface on a large scale. Instead, they cave in a direction in which the rock is weak and soft and thus form locally caved pipelines within the overlying strata. That is, pipe caving occurs in the overlying strata which results in collapse sinkholes in the ground surface that have a punctate distribution. The continuous flow of large-scale sliding rock masses towards the caved zone can effectively slow down the occurrence of pipe caving. More importantly, rocks surrounding a caved pipeline will cave continuously with excavation of orebodies. However, this caving tends to decrease or completely stop after a certain period of time. This is mainly due to a change in the location of the underground orebody being excavated or because the flow in the caving channel has become blocked. Pipe caving has become a caving mode that is typically encountered in strata overlying the metal ore in mines excavated through sublevel caving with no sill pillars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigation of resistivity has been effectively used in assessing the risks of embankmentation and failure. A two‐dimensional (2D) approximation of the surveyed object is commonly assumed for a survey line on the road surface. However, this approximation may not be met when resistivity investigations are conducted over a raised high embankment; under these conditions, regular inversions might yield erroneous results. This study explored the topographical effect of a high embankment on resistivity measurements by forward and inverse modeling of a 3D high embankment model. The results show that a 2D approximation of the survey lines on the road surface significantly increases the apparent resistivity within the depth of the raised embankment. Maximum relative errors reached 21% and 11% for the road shoulder and midline survey lines, respectively. The biased apparent resistivity resulted in an inverted resistivity that was higher than the true values, although resistivity contrasts can still identify interfaces between layers. A geometric factor was used to correct the biased apparent resistivity to eliminate the high embankment topographical effect. Inversion results of the corrected apparent resistivity agreed well with the forward model. The method was then verified by field application. The apparent resistivity of the field data collected on a high embankment in permafrost regions on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau was corrected before inversion. The permafrost table derived from the inverted resistivity was verified based on borehole temperatures. These findings indicate that the topographical influence of high embankments on resistivity measurements needs to be considered. Abstract InSAR time series analysis has become a major tool for nationwide land deformation monitoring. Sentinel-1 SAR data have enabled us to measure and monitor ground deformation globally with high accuracy and resolution through InSAR time series analysis, due to its constant and frequent global coverage and open data policy since 2014. Although several datasets from previous SAR satellites were available before Sentinel-1, such comprehensive deformation monitoring was not performed due to several limitations such as data quality, analysis technique, data policy, and processing capacity at that time. However, since a large amount of ALOS InSAR products and an open-source InSAR time series analysis tool LiCSBAS have become openly and freely available, we can easily derive the deformation from 2006 to 2011 by using them. In this study, we detected the deformation time series and velocity in all major urban areas in Japan from 2006 to 2011 and compared the results with the deformation from 2014 to 2020 detected by Sentinel-1 data. The two deformation datasets with different time periods revealed various 15-year deformation histories, such as long-term constant subsidence in Tomakomai and Niigata, changes in deformation areas and/or velocities in Hirosaki, Kujyukuri, Kanazawa, and Matsushiro, and appearance or disappearance of deformation in Joso, Yoyogi, and Kyoto. Future abundant and continuous SAR data acquisitions will reveal more long-term deformation transitions and help to understand the details of the mechanisms.

The Shunyi fault in the Beijing Plain region is a significant late Pleistocene active fault. The Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) is situated within the central segment of the Shunyi Fault. Since 2010, ground fissures on the airport's runway have progressively worsened, with a maximum vertical displacement difference of up to 20 cm, severely affecting airport safety. Presently, the impact of Shunyi fault activity on the ground fissures at the BCIA is primarily described qualitatively. This paper, based on research regarding the geometric structure of the Shunyi Fault, Quaternary activity, and investigations of the ground fissures at the Capital Airport, employs the fault dislocation model to quantitatively analyze the influence of the Shunyi Fault's creep-sliding activity as well as the 1996 Shunyi ML 4.5 earthquake on the formation of airport ground fissures. The study also discusses the increasing risk of ground fissure hazards in the event of a potential strong earthquake along the Shunyi fault in the future. The preliminary results suggest that with a vertical activity rate of 0.6 mm/year, 46 years of Shunyi Fault's creep-sliding activity results in differential subsidence of no more than 2.5 cm on both sides of the airport ground fissures, contributing to approximately 20% of the formation and development of these fissures. The impact of the Shunyi ML 4.5 earthquake on the formation of airport ground fissures is minimal. However, if a future M 7.0 earthquake occurs on the Shunyi fault, the estimated maximum land differential subsidence between two sides of the fault could reach 104 cm, increasing the risk of airport ground fissure disasters by a factor of five. Ground differential settlement due to groundwater extraction from the upper and deeper layers of the Shunyi fault's hanging wall contributes about 70% to the formation and development of airport ground fissures, remaining the primary factor. The study's results provide essential scientific references for precise prevention and control of ground fissure disasters at BCIA. Furthermore, to further reveal the causes and mechanisms of delayed geological disasters along the Shunyi fault, such as ground fissures and land differential subsidence, it is recommended to implement dynamic monitoring of cross-fault crustal displacement or deformation at crucial segments.

The realization of a harmonious relationship between the natural environment and economic development has always been the unremitting pursuit of traditional mineral resource-based cities. With rich reserves of iron and coal ore resources, Laiwu has become an important steel production base in Shandong Province in China, after several decades of industrial development. However, some serious environmental problems have occurred with the quick development of local steel industries, with ground subsidence and consequent secondary disasters as the most representative ones. To better evaluate possible ground collapse risk, comprehensive approaches incorporating the common deformation monitoring with small-baseline subset (SBAS)-synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) technique, environmental factors analysis, and risk evaluation are designed here with ALOS PALSAR and Sentinel-1 SAR observations. A retrospect on the ground deformation process indicates that ground deformation has largely decreased by around 51.57% in area but increased on average by around −5.4 mm/year in magnitude over the observation period of Sentinel-1 (30 July 2015 to 22 August 2022), compared to that of ALOS PALSAR (17 January 2007 to 28 October 2010). To better reveal the potential triggering mechanism, environmental factors are also utilized and conjointly analyzed with the ground deformation time series. These analysis results indicate that the ground deformation signals are highly correlated with human industrial activities, such underground mining, and the operation of manual infrastructures (landfill, tailing pond, and so on). In addition, the evaluation demonstrates that the area with potential collapse risk (levels of medium, high, and extremely high) occupies around 8.19 km2, approximately 0.86% of the whole study region. This study sheds a bright light on the safety guarantee for the industrial operation and the ecologically friendly urban development of traditional steel production industrial cities in China.

Persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) has been proven to be a robust method for studying complex and dynamic phenomena such as ground displacement over time. Proper visualization of PSI measurements is both crucial and challenging from a cartographic standpoint. This study focuses on the development of an interactive cartographic web map application, providing suitable visualization of PSI data, and exploring their geographic, cartographic, spatial, and temporal attributes. To this end, PSI datasets, generalized at different resolutions, are visualized in eight predefined cartographic scales. A multiscale generalization algorithm is proposed. The automation of this procedure, spurred by the development of a web application, offers users the flexibility to properly visualize PSI datasets according to the specific cartographic scale. Additionally, the web map application provides a toolset, offering state-of-the-art cartographic approaches for exploring PSI datasets. This toolset consists of exploration, measurement, filtering (based on the point’s spatial attributes), and exporting tools customized for PSI measurement. Furthermore, a graph tool, offering users the capability to interactively plot PSI time-series and investigate the evolution of ground deformation over time, has been developed and integrated into the web interface. This study reflects the need for appropriate visualization of PSI datasets at different cartographic scales. It is shown that each original PSI dataset possesses a suitable cartographic scale at which it should be visualized. Innovative cartographic approaches, such as web applications, can prove to be effective tools for users working in the domain of mapping and monitoring the dynamic behavior of surface motion.

InSAR capabilities allow us to understand ground deformations in large metropolitan areas, this is key to assessing site conditions in areas in an inherently expanding context. The multi-temporal interferometry of SAR data records ground surface displacement velocities over large metropolitan areas, identifying anomalous and potential geological hazards. The metropolitan city of Concepción, Chile, is an alluvial basin in one of the world's most seismically active subduction zones, where many subduction earthquakes have occurred throughout history. In this study, we monitored the deformations of the ground surface in the metropolitan area of Concepción using two interferometric techniques, the first being Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) and the second, the Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) technique. To do this, we have used the same Sentinel-1 dataset, obtaining ground movement rates between 2019 and 2021. The velocities were aligned with the GNSS station available in the area. Ground deformation patterns show local deformations depending on factors such as soil type and heterogeneity, and regional deformations due to geographical location in the subduction area. Our results highlight the similarity of the deformation rates obtained with different processing techniques and have also allowed us to identify areas of deformation and compare them to site conditions. These results are essential to evaluate ground conditions and contribute to urban planning and risk management in highly seismic areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ground deformation poses a serious threat to the safety of subway structures. Consequently, intelligent and efficient automated safety monitoring of ground deformation along the subway has become urgent. Traditional engineering observation methods have the disadvantages of difficulties with datum selection, non-automation, and poor reliability. A ground deformation monitoring system for subway structure safety based on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) was established and validated through experimental comparisons with traditional precision leveling in this study. Based on the GNSS monitoring points, the continuous kinematic observation GNSS data of ground deformation along the subway line were obtained; a joint robust local mean decomposition (RLMD)–singular value decomposition (SVD) noise-reduction processing method for GNSS signals was proposed to realize the real-time and high-precision monitoring of ground deformation. The results show that the proposed combined noise-reduction method can reduce the maximum noise amplitude by 86%. When compared with the accuracy of the traditional precision leveling method, it was determined that the vertical positioning accuracy of the deformation monitoring system is greater than 2.7 mm, the horizontal positioning accuracy is greater than 1.3 mm, and the measurement error is less than 1.5 mm. The deformation monitoring system has the advantages of convenience, automation, and high accuracy and can be applied to ground deformation monitoring for subway structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The necessity of early warning systems to ensure people's safety requires the usage of real-time monitoring instrumentation. To meet the required real-time monitoring performance, in-place inclinometer systems represent one of the most common solutions to obtain accurate measures over time. This paper presents the results of a laboratory tests campaign performed on the prototypes and preproduction samples of an in-place inclinometer chain for structural and geotechnical monitoring applications. First, each element sensor has been calibrated to reach a proper level of measure accuracy. Eventually, laboratory tests are carried out on both a single instrument (element) and on the complete measurement chain (system). The adopted centering device, obtained as a combination of a Cardan joint and four spring plungers avoids bending of elements by preventing fictitious displacement measurements and permits the creation of a kinematic chain that accommodates the displacements of a grooveless tube. A specially designed and constructed test set-up that permits assigning a movement to each node has been employed to test a specifically designed centering device and check the system stability over time. Different scenarios have been investigated to determine the accuracy and repeatability of the measures in replicating real cases. The synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) technique is an effective means to monitor ground deformation with high spatial resolution over large areas. However, it is still difficult to obtain the spatially continuous deformation map due to SAR decorrelation or SAR distortion, which greatly limits the usage of the InSAR deformation map, especially for spatiotemporal characterizing and mechanism inversion. Some conventional methods (e.g., spatial interpolation) rely only on the deformation measurements without considering the influence factors, leading to the inaccuracy of the deformation prediction. So, we propose a multifactor-based machine learning model, namely the K-RFR model, that combines K-means clustering and random forest regression algorithm to reconstruct a continuous deformation map, where the influence factors on ground deformation are considered, such as land use, geological engineering, and under groundwater extraction. We take the city of Xi'an, China, as the study area where SBAS-InSAR was used to obtain the ground deformation maps from 2012 to 2015. Fourteen influence factors are employed, including confined water level, change of confined water, phreatic water level, change of phreatic water, rainfall, ground fissures, stratigraphic lithology, landform, hydrogeology, engineering geology, type of land use, soil type, GDP, and DEM, where the K-means clustering method is used to reduce the influence of spatial heterogeneity. The study area is divided into three homogeneous regions and modeled independently, where the mean squared errors of region I–III are 2.9 mm, 2.3 mm, and 3.9 mm, respectively, and the mean absolute errors are 2.5 mm, 1.0 mm, and 2.8 mm, respectively. Finally, the continuous ground deformation maps of Xi'an from 2012 to 2015 are reconstructed. We compared the new method with two interpolation methods. Results show that the correlation coefficient between prediction and InSAR measurements of the new model is 0.94, whereas the ordinary Kriging method is 0.69, and the IDW method is only 0.63. Objective The great demand for urban landscape improvement and reconstruction has required increasing dredging practices for waterfront buildings, particularly antique buildings. To effectively protect such antique buildings, the influence of dredging on the ground deformation of antique buildings needs to be carefully considered in the dredging operations. Methods To obtain a better understanding of the effect of dredging activities on antique buildings, the influence of dredging depth, dredging slope shoulder width and dredging slope ratio on the displacement and stress distribution of an antique stone bridge on soft ground via a three-dimensional model of the bridge body and its ground strata was studied in this paper. Based on the calculated results, mechanistic explanations of dredging on the ground deformation of antique stone bridges were proposed. Results The simulated results show the following: ① Dredging effects on the antique stone bridge mainly appeared as giving rise to the displacement of the bridge and the near strata, changing the stress distribution, and forming a plastic zone in the adjacent area of strata. As a result, dredging activities render a more complex stress and displacement distribution to the bridge and the strata around the bridge. ② Different dredging parameters have different effects on the displacement fields and stress fields of the bridge and its surrounding area. The dredging depth primarily affects the displacement magnitude of the soil, and the dredging slope shoulder width is the crucial factor affecting the scope of the dredging effect, whereas the dredging slope ratio and the dredging slope shoulder width jointly manipulate the change in the soil displacement curve and the development of the plastic zone. ③ In dredging projects, the setting of dredging parameters should not only meet the requirements of engineering practicability and economy but also reasonably determine the dredging parameters and control the impact of dredging on adjacent ancient buildings and take into account the width of the dredging slope shoulder width and the dredging slope ratio when determining the designed dredging depth. Conclusion The results in this work are of practical significance for dredging activity in antique building protection.

We modelled ground deformation at Soufrière Hills Volcano (SHV), using data collected by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory from 2010–2019. We investigate the combined use of Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM) and Global Positioning System (GPS) to distinguish shallow from mid-crustal magmatic processes and their surface deformation profiles. Our results suggest that the EDM network responds predominantly to changes in the shallow magmatic system, whereas GPS records variation at mid-crustal levels. In addition, we show that the behaviour of the EDM network, and of the GPS site HERM, can be explained by underpressurisation in a shallow dyke conduit orientated NNW–SSE, while the mid-crustal system was still undergoing pressurisation. The modelled dyke may be responding to magma cooling and contraction associated with a previous intrusion. We find that geodetic monitoring coverage of multiple flanks within 1 km of the vent can improve our understanding of shallow magmatic system processes with asymmetric deformation fields.

On 6 February 2023, an M7.8 devastating earthquake started rupturing the East Anatolian fault system in Turkey, resulting in intense shaking that lasted over a minute. A second earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck near the city of Elbistan a few hours later. Both of these events are associated with the East Anatolian fault system. The earthquake sequence caused widespread damage and collapse of structures in densely populated areas throughout the Southern Turkey and Northern Syria regions and a very large number of human losses. This study focuses on the correlation of the ground deformation with the critical exposure of the infrastructures of Gaziantep and Kahramanmaraş cities. The estimation of the ground deformation of the affected area is achieved with the use of Copernicus Sentinel-2 products and the Normalized Cross Correlation algorithm (NCC) of image matching. The results of the East–West component show that specific sections of the region moved towards the East direction, reaching displacement measurements of 5.4 m, while other sections moved towards the West direction, reaching displacement measurements of 2.8 m. The results of the North–South component show that almost the whole affected area moved towards the North direction, with specific areas reaching displacements of 5.5 m, and a few exemptions, as some areas moved towards the South direction, with displacements reaching even 6.9 m. Regarding the cities of Kahramanmaraş and Gaziantep, their estimated movement direction is North-West and North-East, respectively, and is consistent with the movements of the Arabian and Anatolian Plates in which they are located. Important infrastructures of the study areas (education, museums, libraries, hospitals, monuments, airports, roads and railways) are superimposed on the findings, enabling us to detect the critical exposure rapidly.

In order to mitigate ground deformation during shield construction in both upper soft and lower hard strata of coastal areas, a numerical simulation was executed. This simulation assessed surface deformation under varying stratum ratios, grouting pressures, and earth bin pressures. The evaluation was primarily based on the amount of ground deformation, which revealed that hard rock strata offer superior settlement control compared to soft rock strata. The excavation of the right tunnel line increased disturbance to the left line at higher stratum ratios. Surface deformation demonstrated a linear correlation with earth pressure, with 130 kPa identified as the optimal point. Higher pressures resulted in extrusion deformation and ground uplift. Grouting pressure had a minimal impact on stratum deformation over time. The stratum ratio exerted the most significant influence on settlement, followed by earth pressure, with grouting pressure having the least impact. In the context of coastal tunnel construction, hard rock excavation is favored. Earth pressure must be balanced to prevent subsidence or uplift, while excessive grouting pressure does not significantly reduce subsidence. Grouting pressure should ensure the complete filling of voids.

This study aims to investigate the occurrence of surface displacements in the Canto do Amaro (CAM) onshore oil field, situated in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, using Sentinel-1 data. The persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) technique was used to perform the analysis based on 42 Sentinel-1 images, acquired from 23 July 2020 to 21 December 2021. Moreover, information regarding the structural geology of the study area was collected by referencing existing literature datasets. Additionally, a study of the water, gas, and oil production dynamics in the research site was conducted, employing statistical analysis of publicly available well production data. The PSI points results were geospatially correlated with the closest oil well production data and the structural geology information. The PSI results indicate displacement rates from −20.93 mm/year up to 14.63 mm/year in the CAM region. However, approximately 90% of the deformation remained in the range of −5.50 mm/year to 4.95 mm/year, indicating low levels of ground displacement in the designated research area. No geospatial correlation was found between the oil production data and the zones of maximum deformation. In turn, ground displacement demonstrates geospatial correlation with geological structures such as strike-slip and rift faults, suggesting a tectonic movement processes. The PSI results provided a comprehensive overview of ground displacement in the Canto do Amaro field, with millimeter-level accuracy and highlighting its potential as a complementary tool to field investigations.

Deformation along a subway rail network is related to the safe operation of the subway and the stability of construction facilities on the surface, making long-term deformation monitoring imperative. Long-term monitoring of surface deformation along the subway network and statistical analysis of the overall deformation situation are lacking in China. Therefore, targeting 35 Chinese cities whose subway mileage exceeds 50 km, we extracted their surface deformation along subway networks between 2018 and 2022, using spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) technology and Sentinel-1 satellite data. We verified the results with the continuous global navigation satellite system (GNSS) stations’ data and found that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the InSAR results was 3.75 mm/year. Statistical analysis showed that ground subsidence along the subways was more prominent in Beijing, Tianjin, and other areas in the North China Plain, namely Kunming (which is dominated by karst landforms), as well as Shanghai, Guangzhou, Qingdao, and other coastal cities. In addition, an analysis revealed that the severity of surface subsidence correlated positively with a city’s gross domestic product (GDP) with a Pearson correlation of 0.787, since the higher the GDP, the more frequent the construction and maintenance of subway, and the more commuters there are, which in turn exacerbates the disturbance to the surface. Additionally, the type of land cover also affects the ground deformation. Our findings provide a reference for constructing, operating, and maintaining the urban subway systems in China.

This study employs advanced synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques, specifically the small baseline subset (SBAS) method, to analyze ground deformation dynamics on Aegina, a volcanic island within the Hellenic Volcanic Arc. Using Sentinel-1 satellite data spanning January 2016 to May 2023, this research reveals different deformation behaviors. The towns of Aegina and Saint Marina portray regions of stability, contrasting with central areas exhibiting subsidence rates of up to 1 cm/year. The absence of deformation consistent with volcanic activity on Aegina Island aligns with geological records and limited seismic activity, attributing the observed subsidence processes to settlement phenomena from past volcanic events and regional geothermal activity. These findings reinforce the need for continuous monitoring of the volcanic islands located in the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, providing important insights for local risk management, and contributing to our broader understanding of geodynamic and volcanic processes.

Gas consumption is subject to large seasonal fluctuations between the summer season (period with lower request) and the winter season (time with increased consumer demand). Underground gas storage applications (UGS) help to ensure a steady and reliable supply of natural gas, even during periods of peak demand, smoothing price fluctuations and providing a means of balancing the supply and demand of natural gas on a daily, weekly, or seasonal basis. However, UGS activities can induce vertical ground displacement, which is usually strictly associated with the injection and withdrawal of gas into/from the reservoir. It is necessary to carefully monitor and manage the potential impact of UGS activities on the subsurface and surface to ensure the stability and safety of the local environment. The Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique can provide a wide range of high-precision information on seasonal surface deformation associated with UGS activities useful for increasing the amount of information on ground deformation monitoring. This study introduces a unique and replicable approach to investigating freely available ground movement data for a fractured aquifer reservoir located in the Madrid Basin (Guadalajara, Spain), which is currently employed for seasonal underground gas storage applications. Notably, this study gives a comprehensive comparison of InSAR results of UGS activity in a deep aquifer, leveraging data that are entirely open-source and easily accessible. The Yela UGS project exploits a carbonate reservoir (dolomite) managed, since 2012, by Enagás, the Spanish main Transmission System Operator (TSO). InSAR data from 2015 to 2021 provided a full and coherent ground deformation pattern of the area. Based on this data, a fully integrated volumetric variation model was developed, elucidating the effects of gas storage activity.
