Along the lines of the analyses about secondary genres derived from news texts, this study focuses on the discursive shaping of the nineteenth century printed advertisements. The interest in such texts arises from the need to analyze the historical shaping of advertising discourse, which from the very beginning has allowed for the coexistence not only of an informative purpose but also, jointly, of a persuasive aim which favors the appearance of linguistic features and discursive strategies. We use a corpus made up of printed advertisements published (1389 examples in total) in La Correspondencia de España (2/1/1860-27/6/1925), one of the first newspapers to initiate business journalism in Spain. We trace, within the discourse tradition’s paradigm, different typologies of printed advertisements configured discursively in a different way depending on their profile (communicative distance vs. communicative immediacy) and pragmatic accommodation to the communicative purposes. This paper addresses the lack of consensus within the field of discourse traditions (DTs) -and more precisely regarding the Coserian tripartition of language into universal, historical, and individual levels-which results from Peter Koch's understanding of DTs as entities meant to be embedded in the historical level, as opposed to that of Johannes Kabatek or Franz Lebsanft, according to whom they must be placed at the individual level. The specific aim sought is to show the criteria on which the scheme constructed by Coseriu relies by interweaving his tripartition of levels with the Aristotelian-Humboldtian one -in turn structured around the concepts of energeia, dynamis and ergon. The article thus reveals that the extent to which Koch's position differs from Coseriu's original proposal -to which Kabatek and Lebsanft remain faithful-can be explained in terms of how the opposition between the subject and the object of study and the ontology of the former is conceived in each case. Added to the above, this article likewise highlights the close link tying epistemology to ontology which becomes evident when closely examining the foundations that underpin the well-known Coserian tripartition. In this article, we aim at proving that a certain discourse tradition, regarding the usage of expressive phraseologisms in prose, does not function properly when it comes to Liviu Rebreanu's two novels, namely Ion and Răscoala. Usually, as Cristinel Munteanu previously demonstrated, in the literary texts authored by writers such as Duiliu Zamfirescu, Mihail Sadoveanu, Fănuș Neagu etc., as a rule, one can identify the most expressive idioms and set phrases at the dialogued level, and not at the narrative level. It seems that in Liviu Rebreanu's case this discourse tradition functions the other way round. Our study, based on a comprehensive analysis of both aforementioned novels, will confirm such a hypothesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. Syntactic alternations and socio-stylistic constraints: the case of asyndetic complementation in the history of Spanish.

- Abstract
This paper analyses the alternation between complement clauses with and without complementizer (syndetic and asyndetic), in historical Spanish (15th–18th century). While previous studies have shown that this syntactic alternation was regulated by the degree of integration of the clauses, its stylistic distribution is understudied. In this paper we investigate whether the syndetic/asyndetic alternation is governed by socio-stylistic factors (discourse traditions, audience and speaker design). The analysis of the data from the corpus CODEA+2015, is carried out by using regression models. Our results indicate that the selection of asyndetic complements was predicted by the type of audience (reactive style-shift), employed especially when addressing superiors. Also, asyndetic complements were favored by the use of deferential request verbs such as suplicar ('to beg') that represents the petitioner as an inferior (proactive style-shift). Furthermore, the stylistic choice for an asyndetic complement was determined at the sentential level ("micro" discourse traditions), when the writer is also the performer of the speech-act. Thus, we show that in choosing alternative variants, writers are concerned with expressing grammatical meanings but also social identity. Additionally, the diachronic analysis indicates that while the proactive style-shift effect grows stronger over time, the relevance of the reactive style-shift declines, showing that socio-stylistic predictors, similarly to linguistic predictors, can be affected diachronic fluctuations. Our paper evinces the relevance of a multidimensional and diachronic approach to the study of syntactic variation, demonstrating how a monolithic view of the textual dimension can hide fine-grained socio-stylistic effects. - Abstract
The present paper studies the relationship between discourse context and meaning (change), exemplified in the diachrony of the modal construction . The analysis of the data collected from CORDE, inspired by Koch and Oesterreichers’ (2007) model, reveals a change in the textual preferences for the construction, namely from discourse genres related to communicative distance to those typical for communicative immediacy. This textual trajectory goes hand in hand with the semantic shift seen for over the centuries; from contexts of external dynamic necessity to contexts of internal (deontic) necessity. A close examination of two discourse genres, juridical prose and dramatic prose, shows a strong link between discourse context and meaning. In juridical prose, representing communicative distance, the use of is an indication of diachronic continuity, with a stable preference for external dynamic necessity, whereas the innovative uses of the construction, namely internal deontic necessity, are found in dramatic prose, a genre typical of communicative immediacy. - Published

This article analyses the reception of the concept of discourse tradition (DT) in Hispanic and Brazilian linguistic research. It gives an account of the principles, methods and orientations that have underpinned this approach to analysis in Spain, Latin America and Brazil. Its purpose is to be useful both for those who need information on the main references to be highlighted, in the regional areas delimited for this study, in relation to the DTs paradigm, and, above all, for those who seek to get an idea of the methodological pillars on which this current of historical linguistics is based. This paper analyzes uses, functions, and literary distribution of the negative politeness formula si placet '(lit.) if it pleases (you)' in a corpus of Late Latin texts (third–sixth century CE). Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative observations, it is suggested that the pragmatic enrichment undergone by this conditional parenthetical clause is due to a conspiracy of factors, namely a process of semantic and pragmatic change fostered by a "politeness-induced invited inference" (Beeching 2005), which was triggered by a general process of literary imitation within the very specific discourse tradition of philosophical dialogues. The analysis shows, indeed, that si placet is very rarely used in the history of Latin and it is circumscribed to this specific literary genre. This suggests that this politeness formula developed as a genre-specific stylistic feature and as such it was replicated over centuries through the circulation of textual models and the propagation of genre-related practices, as a valuable linguistic device to render the idea of an urbane conversation among educated peers and, ultimately, as a marker of socio-cultural identity. These lines present some results obtained by testing the hypothesis that suggests the possibility of identifying symptoms of a Discourse Tradition -understood as any historically determined mold for communication in a language with its own historicityin a text through the relative frequency of the junction schemes -elements that connect the propositions in a discourse- that appear in a text. A corpus of 200 Twitter messages was collected, from four accounts corresponding to different spheres of human activity -institutional, commercial, informative and personal-, then an analysis is made in order to find the junction schemes present in the messages, as well as the elements out of linguistic scope, but strongly linked to it. From this, some statistical data is analyzed qualitatively, describing some conservative elements of Discourse Traditions in different spheres, such as the omission of arguments and the use of direct discourse in the informative sphere, or the diary in the personal sphere. With this analysis, the four spheres can be classified into two groups, following the notion of emission frameworks by Goffman (1981). The conservative elements together with the innovators, allow to postulate the plausibility of a Discourse Tradition born on Twitter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper addresses the lack of consensus within the field of discourse traditions (DTs) −and more precisely regarding the Coserian tripartition of language into universal, historical, and individual levels− which results from Peter Koch’s understanding of DTs as entities meant to be embedded in the historical level, as opposed to that of Johannes Kabatek or Franz Lebsanft, according to whom they must be placed at the individual level. - Abstract
The following paper makes a contribution to the linguistic description of the Spanish essay in its first historical stages. In particular, we define the pragmatic-discursive functions of the first-person deictic forms and emphasize the evolving changes that can be observed in the delimited chronological period (1600–1795). To this end, we analyze a linguistic corpus formed by eight texts that belong to a discourse tradition, whose perlocutive purpose is to implement several economic reforms in order to resolve the financial problems of the country. - Abstract
Starting from the distinction made by Eugeniu Coşeriu [2002] between the universals of language (semanticity, alterity, creativity, materiality and istoricity), we will refer to the concept of istoricity so as to point out some elements which distinguish the Romanian parliamentary discourse. In this analysis the concept of discourse tradition becomes a very useful instrument if we consider the types of historicity as they were classified by Johannes Kabatek [2016]. We will analyse the specific of the parliamentary discourse concerning its belonging to a functional style, but also with reference to the rhetorical genre and structure, all of them showing that it builds up a discourse tradition. - Abstract
This study aims to reflect on Discourse Traditions (DT). We demonstrated how a field of research that is concerned with different discourse representations through the diachronic axis and therefore that always deals with the dynamic mechanism between permanence and change of those pragmatic-discursive forms has been itself formed by a similar process before Coserian ideas. This work examines some of their traits and reflects on the innovations brought by DT and concludes that their contribution stems initially from their methodological arrangement and not from their theoretical model, which were primarily based on premises already developed by Coseriu (2007). Finally, we analyzed, according to DT principles, four letters taken out from a diachronic corpus (1713-1931) resulting in an interesting comprehension of what the term "official letters" means, besides a peculiar description of the aforementioned letters. The novatores, probably, constitute the most prominent movement in Spanish science of the last decades of the 17th century. The struggle against the traditional theory and practice is related to Spanish decline and anticipates what would afterward be the Enlightenment. This paper examines argumentative and meta-discursive formal idioms of the novatores medical texts, within a style characterized by polysyndeton and syntactic complexity, typical of the immediacy conceptional. Interested in the weight of cultural factors in the evolution of the grammar of the text and the concept of discourse tradition, we have finally wondered if the novatores meant a significant change in the textual organization and if, therefore, there is a novator discourse tradition. At least for now, the answer is negative. However, later studies may offer data that will modify this negative conclusion and show that the change in the history of novice Medicine also came together with a new discourse tradition.

In this contribution, we defend their autonomous character with respect to sequences with a demonstrative and otro (este / ese + otro), hence arguing for the existence of an individual grammaticalization itinerary. Based on an exhaustive analysis of the data in the CORDE corpus, we place their origin in the dialects of the Western part of the Iberian Peninsula and expound on the chronology of their birth, raise and decline, illustrating how they generalized following a cluster of discourse traditions., Los demostrativos esotro / estotro del español tardomedieval, clásico y protomoderno no han sido aún objeto de una investigación exhaustiva.

Following Traugott and Trousdale's (2013) constructionist diachronic model, this corpus study examines the origin and expansion of the structure caerle/venirle/(entrarle) en + noun of 'liking', which has only left behind a few lexicalized remnants. These expressions, attested since the Cantar del mio Cid, constitute a constructional subschema that appeared via constructionalization from the amalgam of two Constructions whose origins go back to Classical Latin. Their expansion both in types and tokens and across different discourse traditions between the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance seems to reflect the latinizing trends of the period and the influence of other Romance languages.

This article analyzes medical recipes as genre and text-type in order to gain more insight into the history of Spanish through the diversity of its texts and discourses. With this goal, we have selected 557 medical recipes from different works of medicine written in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and analyzed them according to the structural elements (ingredients, preparation, application, efficacy), the use of verbal forms and the incorporation of the recipes within the medical texts. The results show that precise and detailed information, as well as the use of infinitives and verbal periphrases, is related with medical works whose function lies in giving advice and recommendation, while vague information and the imperative mood is primarily used in remedy books and remedy sections, which are both destined for fast and immediate consultation. We conclude that the choices regarding discursive patterns is determined by whether the medical text is associated with the learned tradition or whether it is an extraacademic text.

- Abstract
These lines present some results obtained by testing the hypothesis that suggeststhe possibility of identifying symptoms of a Discourse Tradition -understood as anyhistorically determined mold for communication in a language with its own historicity- in a text through the relative frequency of the junction schemes -elements thatconnect the propositions in a discourse- that appear in a text. A corpus of 200 Twitter messages was collected, from four accounts corresponding to differentspheres of human activity -institutional, commercial, informative and personal-, thenan analysis is made in order to find the junction schemes present in the messages,as well as the elements out of linguistic scope, but strongly linked to it. From this, some statistical data is analyzed qualitatively, describing some conservative elementsof Discourse Traditions in different spheres, such as the omission of arguments andthe use of direct discourse in the informative sphere, or the diary in the personalsphere. With this analysis, the four spheres can be classified into two groups, following the notion of emission frameworks by Goffman (1981).

In this article, I will discuss a series of records from the Supreme Court of Quito pertaining to lawsuits between (former) slaves and their (former) masters. The petitions of the parties show a clearly marked structure and are characterised by the use of formulaic language. Furthermore, argumentative structures determined by the communicative situation can be observed; these include very general topoi, for example, the argument from authority -the authority being either legal or religious in the corpus- but also specific topoi related to slavery, such as the topos that a cruel treatment justifies a change of master. My contribution will concentrate on the analysis of these argumentative structures in order to emphasise the fact that it is not only the high degree of formal codification that characterises the petitions of the corpus, but also a range of structural patterns of the content, selected according to the communicative situation.

This work examines some of their traits and reflects on the innovations brought by DT and concludes that their contribution stems initially from their methodological arrangement and not from their theoretical model, which were primarily based on premises already developed by Coșeriu (2007). Finally, we analyzed, according to DT principles, four letters taken out from a diachronic corpus (1713-1931) resulting in an interesting comprehension of what the term “official letters” means, besides a peculiar description of the aforementioned letters., Este trabalho reflete acerca das Tradições Discursivas (TD). Topicalizing expressions in Romance languages are not inherited from the mother tongue, but have developed in Romance. This makes them particularly interesting as examples of the origin and development of units which fall on the borderline between grammar and discourse. This study examines the history of respecto ‘concerning’ as a topicalizer in Spanish. In § 1 the present-day use of this form is described. § 2 deals with the development of respecto in Romance languages, as a descendant of Latin respectus, and also examines its uses in Neo Latin, which are key to understanding the complexity of the formation of respecto in Romance languages. § 3 provides the chronology of the changes undergone by this form until it became a topicalizing expression at a late stage; while § 4 includes some notes relating to the complex variety of forms used as topicalizers from medieval Spanish to the present day.

- Abstract
This paper deals with the rhetoric of articles about language related topics published in Italian newspapers in a period of substantial changes in the field of the standard norm and the language use in the high and public discourse spheres. The sample of texts which serves as an empirical basis comes from language columns which provide critical, informative or instructive comments on the “correct or adequate” use of the Italian language, texts which were signed by specialists in the field of literature, philology and linguistics. We compare two language columns published in two of the most renowned national daily newspapers, La Stampa and La Repubblica, between the 1950s and the first decade of the 21st century. The aim of this comparison is to identify rhetorical strategies adopted by the authors to examine both the reflection on scientific paradigms which have been the subject of linguistic research on the popular discourse on language and the relevance of specific discourse traditions for the selection of these strategies.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior The diachronic studies marked the first decades of the 20th century in Brazilian linguistics, passing by an ostracism period after the 50s. Mainly from the 90s especially with the project, created in 1997, Para a história do português brasileiro (PHPB), which has systemized, in national ambit, the programme related to the area of diachrony the historical studies retake forces and have gradually increased since then. Our work is set in the new scene of Brazilian historical linguistics and it is associated to two research programmes: i) the constitution of a diachronic corpus; ii) the diachrony of text and discourse. As regards the first programme, we made effort to constitute a diachronic corpus of official letters about Rio Grande do Norte, we called cartas oficiais norte-rio-grandenses, written in 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The chosen for bureaucrat letters occurred for they represent a textual category very productive in historical contexts, mostly 18th and 19th centuries, in which the command of writing was the least and also because they bring, almost always explicitly, the information of where, when, for whom and from whom, as remembers Fonseca (2003). The rules for constituting the corpus were based, although not strictly, on the orientation from PHPB. In respect to the second programme, we set up on the ideas of coserian base came from the studies on discourse traditions (TD) (Koch, 1997; Kabatek, 2006) amongst which that the texts are shaped so as to follow their own tradition (Coseriu, 2007), and we turned to Diplomatics (Belloto, 2002) in order to do the characterization of this corpus by the application of concepts from Diplomatics and TD as well as by the presentation of the structures that form those official letters: their textual genres, a kind of TD, with their macrostructures; and some of their formulaic expressions (microstructures), another sort of TD. This stage of characterizing will pay attention, as far as possible, to the dynamic between tradition and innovation that happen in the actualization of those textual structures along the centuries. This work intends to contribute with the researches connected to Historical Linguistics in Rio Grande do Norte, more specifically the ones related to the constitution of diachronic corpora and to TD; and with the study of official documents, textual category about which there are almost no studies (cf. Silveira, 2007) Os estudos diacrônicos marcaram as primeiras décadas do século XX na linguística brasileira, passando por um período de ostracismo após a década de 50.

The aim of this research is to show how discourse is organized in eighteenth-century prose texts, a period of great importance in the history of the Spanish language, since in that period new models of discourse organization were developed in the form of both simpler and more precise expression. We focus on the study of two types of discourse markers: order and explanation. These markers are frequently used in the prose of this period; the relevant properties are, first, the delimitation of form and the distribution of function in their respective paradigms and, secondly, the incorporation of new signs and the introduction of new functions and discourse values in addition to the existing ones. The analysis allows us to demonstrate that the discourse functions and values of these markers in the written texts of the first stage of modern Spanish configure the ways in which discourse structuring will be established in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when these are consolidated and expanded. The theoretical approach to this problem is based on the concepts of grammaticalization as expansion and subjectification, which serve to explain the internal factors that have motivated the development of these discourse markers in the eighteenth century, and the concept of discourse traditions in order to detail their incorporation, diffusion and consolidation in different genres and textual models.
