Depression is linked to obesity. The body roundness index (BRI) provides a more accurate assessment of body and visceral fat levels than the body mass index or waist circumference. However, the association between BRI and depression is unclear. Therefore, we investigated this relationship using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. In this population-based cross-sectional study, data from 18,654 adults aged ≥20 years from the NHANES 2011–2018 were analyzed. Covariates, including age, gender, race/ethnicity, education level, marital status, poverty-income ratio, alcohol status, smoking status, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, energy intake, physical activity, total cholesterol, and triglycerides were adjusted in multivariable logistic regression models. In addition, smooth curve fitting, subgroup analysis, and interaction testing were conducted. After adjusting for covariates, BRI was positively correlated with depression. For each one-unit increase in BRI, the prevalence of depression increased by 8 % (odds ratio = 1.08, 95 % confidence interval = 1.05–1.10, P < 0.001). As this was a cross-sectional study, we could not determine a causal relationship between BRI and depression. Patients with depression in this study were not clinically diagnosed with major depressive disorder. BRI levels were positively related to an increased prevalence of depression in American adults. Background Body roundness index (BRI) is a simple measure of central obesity and is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease. People with metabolically obese normal weight (MONW) have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and are significantly associated with central obesity. The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index is an indicator of insulin resistance. There are limited studies on the relationship between BRI, TyG index and MONW phenotypes in gender-specific elderly populations. Objective To explore differences in the risk of prevalence of the BRI and MONW phenotypes in the elderly population by gender, and to explore the TyG index as a potential factor in their differences by gender. Methods Permanent residents≥60 years of age who underwent physical examination in 10 cities and counties in Anhui Province from 2017-07-01 to 2021-06-30 were selected as study subjects. A unified questionnaire was used to collect information on gender, age, and disease history of the study subjects, collect information on physical examination and laboratory tests, and calculate BRI and TyG indices. Men and women will be classified into metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW) phenotype and MONW phenotype according to metabolic status and BMI level, respectively: male MHNW phenotype (n=5 384), male MONW phenotype (n=6 251) ; female MHNW phenotype (n=4 498), female MONW phenotype (n=8 264). Males and females were divided into 4 levels according to BRI quartiles, males: M1, M2, M3, and M4, and females: F1, F2, F3, and F4, respectively. Logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the association between BRI quartile levels and the risk of elevated TyG index and the risk of prevalence of MONW phenotypes respectively, using the Z test was used to compare the differences between the OR value of male and female. Results A total of 24 397 investigators were included in this study, including 11 635 (47.7%) males and 12 762 (52.3%) females, with a median age of 67 (64, 70) years, and 9 882 (40.5%) with MHNW phenotype and 14 515 (59.5%) with MONW phenotype. Abstract Background People with the metabolically obese normal weight (MONW) phenotype have been confirmed to significantly increase the risk of unfavorable health consequences. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between traditional and novel anthropometric indices with the MONW phenotype and compare the predictive ability of different anthropometric indices in identifying individuals with the MONW phenotype. Methods This cross-sectional study involved a total of 26,332 participants aged 18 years or older with a normal weight from Nanjing, China. Sociodemographic information, biochemical measurements, and anthropometric indices were collected. The novel body fat anthropometric indices included body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), abdominal volume index (AVI), weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), body adiposity index (BAI), conicity index (CI), waist-hip-height ratio (WHHR), as well as traditional indices such as waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR).The prevalence ratio (PR) from modified poisson regression and area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) were conducted to compare the association and predictive capacity of different obesity indicators for the MONW phenotype. Abstract Background The dietary inflammatory index (DII) serves as a tool to assess the inflammatory impact of an individual’s diet. This study aimed to investigate the association between DII and some cardio-metabolic risk indices among patients with T2DM. Methods Data from the Hoveyzeh Cohort Study, encompassing 2045 adults with T2DM, were analyzed. DII scores were calculated based on food frequency questionnaires. Anthropometric measurements and biochemical tests were performed to assess cardio-metabolic risk factors. Results Higher DII scores were positively associated with elevated triglyceride levels, triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, lipid accumulation product (LAP), anthropometric indices including a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), body mass index (BMI), hip, waist circumferences (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (all Ptrend < 0.05). Notably, no significant association was observed between DII and fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels (Ptrend > 0.05). Additionally, dietary intake analysis revealed a negative correlation between DII scores and intake of fiber, fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, seafood, dairy products, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, D, and E (all Ptrend < 0.05). Conversely, higher DII scores were associated with increased consumption of red meat, processed meat, refined cereals, potatoes, and soft drinks (all Ptrend < 0.05). Conclusion This study underscores the critical link between dietary inflammation, assessed by the DII score, and a multitude of cardio-metabolic risk factors in patients with T2DM. Notably, while the study did not find a significant association between DII and fasting blood sugar levels, it identified robust associations with novel anthropometric and biochemical indices indicative of cardio-metabolic risk. However, traditional anthropometric methods present challenges in accurately assessing the likelihood of OAB. Hence, this study’s objective was to identify the correlation between the body roundness index (BRI) and OAB. Methods The research included 12,401 individuals who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey spanning 2005–2018. The correlation between BRI and OAB was explored by using weighted multiple logistic regression and weighted restricted cubic spline (RCS). Subgroup analyses showed the associations based on different population types. The study also analyzed the predictive capability of various anthropometric indices, including BRI, body mass index, waist circumference, and weight, in assessing the likelihood of OAB through Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results An independent positive correlation between OAB and BRI was identified after adjusting for potential confounders in weighted multivariate logistic models[odds ratio (OR) = 1.15, 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.12–1.17]. Weighted RCS analysis found a positive dose-response correlation between OAB and BRI. The effect size of BRI on OAB remained stable across all prespecified subgroups (all P for interactions > 0.05). However, there is limited research on the association between visceral obesity and depression, as well as the potential mediating role of AIP in this relationship. Methods This study included 13,123 participants from the 2005–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Visceral obesity was measured with the Body Roundness Index (BRI), while depression was evaluated with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The AIP served as a marker for lipid disorders. To investigate the association between the BRI and depression, multivariate logistic regressions, restricted cubic spline models, subgroup analyses, and interaction tests were used. Additionally, a mediation analysis was conducted to explore the role of AIP in mediating the effect of BRI on depression. Results There was a positive linear correlation between the BRI and depression. After controlling for all covariates, individuals in the highest BRI (Q4) group had an OR of 1.42 for depression (95% CI: 1.12–1.82) in comparison with individuals in the lowest BRI (Q1) group. Moreover, the AIP partially mediated the association between the BRI and depression, accounting for approximately 8.64% (95% CI: 2.04-16.00%) of the total effect. Conclusion The BRI was positively associated with depression, with the AIP playing a mediating role. This study provides a novel perspective on the mechanism that connects visceral obesity to depression. Managing visceral fat and monitoring AIP levels may contribute to alleviating depression.

Background B vitamins play a crucial role in the balance and metabolism of energy. Energy metabolism mainly benefits from the B-complex vitamins. Specifically, decarboxylation, transamination, acylation, oxidation, and reduction of substrates that are ultimately employed in energy intake require thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin B6. Vitamin deficiency could lead to chronic disease occurrence. Objectives To assess the impact of energy-releasing B-vitamins intake (B1, B2, B3, and B6) on selected indices of obesity and cardiac function. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed on 491 apparently healthy adults (18-64 years old) between January and May 2019 at Hashemite University, Jordan. Anthropometric measurements were taken, lipid profiles were analyzed, and indices of obesity and cardiac function were calculated. The typical dietary intake of B1, B2, B3, and B6 vitamins was calculated. Results Conicity index (CI) and abdominal volume index (AVI) scores significantly decreased with the increased adjusted vitamin B1 and B6 intake. Also, body roundness index (BRI), weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) scores were decreased with the increase of adjusted B6 intake ( pp=0.001) and BRI (r= 0.111, p=0.014). Similar correlations were detected among male participants between energy-adjusted B1 intake and BAI, AVI, and BRI. Female participants had a significant weak inverse correlation between BAI and energy-adjusted B2 (r= -0.180, p=0.029) and B6 intake (r= -0.212, p=0.010). Only B1, the vitamin, significantly explained 2.43 and 1.24% of changes observed in the AVI and BRI scores, respectively ( p Conclusions Increasing the consumption of B1, B2, and B6 may significantly lower values of indices of obesity and cardiac function regardless of sex differences. Obesity is an important characteristic manifestation of metabolic syndrome (MetS), and body roundness index (BRI) is one of the anthropometric indicators associated with obesity. However, studies on the relationship between BRI and MetS risk are limited. We aimed to explore the relationship between baseline BRI and MetS in the USA population. Our study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2018, ultimately enrolling and analysing 47 303 participants. Data-driven tertiles were used to categorise BRI levels, and multivariate logistic regression models were fitted to investigate the association of BRI with MetS in adults. In addition, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to assess the ability of BRI to predict MetS. The distribution of BRI was different across ethnic groups with a gradual decrease in the proportion of non-Hispanic Whites and other races. In addition, BRI was significantly associated with traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Univariate regression analysis indicated BRI to be a moderate risk factor for MetS, and multivariate logistic regression analysis found that BRI remained an independent risk factor for MetS. After adjusting for confounding variables, a non-linear relationship was found between BRI levels and the prevalence of MetS. More importantly, BRI predicted MetS with the largest AUC among anthropometric measures. In summary, elevated baseline BRI levels are independently associated with the development of MetS, and baseline BRI may assist in identifying patients at risk for MetS, leading to early and optimal treatment to improve their outcomes. The inflection point was further found to be 3.96, and the correlation between BRI and gallstones was found both before and after the inflection point. ROC analysis showed that BRI (AUC = 0.667) was a stronger predictor of gallstones than BMI (AUC = 0.634). Conclusions: Elevated BRI is associated with an increased risk of gallstones in the U.S. population, and BRI is a stronger predictor of gallstones than BMI. BackgroundAn innovative way to quantify obesity that appropriately captures levels of visceral and body fat is the Body Roundness Index (BRI). The purpose of this study is to look at the relationship between BRI and osteoporosis (OP) in adult Americans.MethodsThis study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) collected between 2007 and 2018. NHANES is a research program designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. It conducts surveys focusing on various populations and health-related topics. Logistic regression analysis was employed to investigate the relationship between BRI and OP, adjusting for various covariates. BRI was categorized into four levels to further explore the association trends between different BRI levels and OP, enhancing the robustness of the results. Using restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, the dose–response relationship between BRI and OP was illustrated. Subgroup analyses were also carried out to evaluate the consistency and robustness of the findings.ResultsThis study included 8,899 participants aged 50 years and older, among whom 763 had OP. BRI and the prevalence of OP were inversely correlated in the fully adjusted model (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.69–0.86). The prevalence of OP considerably reduced with higher BRI levels when BRI was converted from a continuous to a categorical variable in comparison to the lowest BRI quartile. RCS analysis revealed an L-shaped negative correlation between BRI and OP prevalence, with a threshold effect analysis identifying a breakpoint at BRI = 5.29. Each unit increase in BRI to the left of this breakpoint was linked to a 36% decrease in the probability of OP (OR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.57–0.72). Based on stratified factor subgroup analyses, it was shown that the negative correlation between BRI and OP persisted.ConclusionIn a large, representative sample of American adults, this study identified a significant negative correlation between BRI and the prevalence of OP. Specifically, as BRI increases, the prevalence of osteoporosis decreases. Maintaining an appropriate and healthy BRI level may play a critical role in the prevention of osteoporosis. Therefore, regular monitoring of BRI and the adoption of appropriate health measures are essential for reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Background Several previous cross‐sectional studies suggested that body roundness index (BRI) may be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the association should be further validated. Our study aimed to assess the association of the BRI trajectories with CVD among middle‐aged and older Chinese people in a longitudinal cohort. Methods and Results A total of 9935 participants from the CHARLS (China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study) with repeated BRI measurements from 2011 to 2016 were included. The BRI trajectories were identified by group‐based trajectory modeling. The primary outcome was incident CVD (stroke or cardiac events), which occurred in 2017 to 2020. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to examine the association of BRI trajectories with CVD risk. Participants were divided into 3 BRI trajectories, named the low‐stable BRI trajectory, moderate‐stable BRI trajectory and high‐stable BRI trajectory, accounting for 49.81%, 42.35%, and 7.84% of the study population, respectively. Background B vitamins play a crucial role in the balance and metabolism of energy. Energy metabolism mainly benefits from the B-complex vitamins. Specifically, decarboxylation, transamination, acylation, oxidation, and reduction of substrates that are ultimately employed in energy intake require thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin B6. Vitamin deficiency could lead to chronic disease occurrence. Objectives To assess the impact of energy-releasing B-vitamins intake (B1, B2, B3, and B6) on selected indices of obesity and cardiac function. Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between novel anthropometric indices, specifically the body shape index (ABSI) and body roundness index (BRI), and the prevalence of kidney stone disease (KSD) within the general population of the United States (U.S.). Methods This study employed a cross-sectional analysis of participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2020. Various statistical methods, including multivariable logistic regression analysis, restricted cubic spline (RCS) plot curve, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and subgroup analysis, were utilized to examine the association between ABSI and BRI and the risk of KSD. Results A total of 39,251 individuals were included in the study. First, the RCS plot presented that a linear positive association was found between ABSI and BRI and KSD risk. Second, the results of the multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that, compared to the lowest quartile, the adjusted odds ratios (with 95% confidence intervals) for the prevalence of KSD across the quartiles of ASBI and BRI were 0.94 (0.67, 1.30), 1.55 (1.15, 2.10), and 1.74 (1.28, 2.35), respectively, in the fully adjusted model. Third, the ROC curve demonstrated that the area under the curve of ABSI, and BRI was significantly higher than traditional anthropometry or body composition measures, including BMI and waist circumference. Conclusions The findings of our study indicate that the discriminant ability of ABSI and BRI for KSD is significantly superior to that of BMI and waist circumference. Consequently, ABSI and BRI have the potential to more accurately identify an individual’s risk of developing KSD in a clinical setting.

Aims: The present study aimed to clarify the relationships between novel and traditional anthropometric indices and insulin sensitivity (SI) in young and middle-aged Japanese persons with normal glucose tolerance (NGT), and middle-aged Japanese persons with NGT and glucose intolerance. Methods: Plasma glucose and insulin levels were measured in 1270 young (age <40 years) and 2153 middle-aged persons with NGT (n = 1531) and glucose intolerance (n = 622) during a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. Height (Ht), weight, and waist circumference (WC) were measured. The body mass index (BMI), WC, and the WC/Ht ratio were used as traditional anthropometric indices. A body shape index (ABSI) and the body roundness index (BRI) were calculated as novel indices. Indices of SI (Matsuda index and 1/homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance) were calculated and compared with anthropometric indices. Results: The ABSI showed a weak correlation with SI indices in all groups. The BRI showed almost the same correlation with SI indices as the BMI, WC, and WC/Ht in all groups. The inverse correlation between each of the anthropometric indices other than ABSI and SI indices was weak in young persons, at 0.16–0.27 (Spearman's ρ values), but strong in middle-aged persons, at 0.38–1.00. On receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis for detection of insulin resistance, the ABSI had a lower area under the ROC curve (AUC) than the other anthropometric indices, and the BRI and the WC/Ht ratio showed similar AUCs. The AUCs for the BRI and WC/Ht ratio were the highest in middle-aged men with NGT and glucose intolerance. Conclusions: The BRI, not the ABSI, was better correlated with SI in young and middle-aged Japanese persons. Background: Obesity, especially visceral obesity, plays an important role in the progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The body roundness index (BRI) is a new measure of obesity that is considered to reflect visceral obesity more comprehensively than other measures. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between BRI and CVD risk in hypertensive patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and explore its superiority in predicting CVD. Methods: The Cox proportional hazards model was used to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident CVD. The area under the curve (AUC), continuous net reclassification improvement (NRI), and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) were used to assess which measures of obesity had the best predictive value for CVD risk. Results: During a median follow-up period of 6.8 years, 324 participants suffered a CVD event. After multivariable adjustment, compared with the reference group (the first tertile), the HRs (95% CI) of CVD were 1.25 (95% CI, 0.93-1.70) and 1.74 (95% CI, 1.30-2.33) for subjects in the tertile 2 and tertile 3 groups, respectively. Compared with other measurement indicators, BRI has the highest predictive value for CVD risk [AUC: 0.627, 95% CI: 0.593-0.661]. The addition of the BRI to the fully adjusted multivariate model improved the predictive power for CVD, which was validated in the continuous NRI and the IDI (all P < .05). Conclusions: BRI was significantly associated with the risk of CVD in hypertensive patients with OSA. Furthermore, BRI may improve CVD risk prediction in hypertensive patients with OSA. Background: The relationship between novel anthropometric indices, specifically a body shape index (ABSI) and body roundness index (BRI), with abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) or severe AAC (SAAC) is unclear. The aim of our study was therefore to investigate possible relationships between novel anthropometric indices and prevalence of AAC and SAAC. Methods: We obtained U.S. general population data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2013 and 2014. The study used restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, multivariable logistic regression modeling, subgroup analysis, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve assessment. We investigated relationships between ABSI or BRI and AAC and SAAC risk. Associations between ABSI or BRI and the degree of AAC were also evaluated using a generalized additive model. Results: The study cohort was comprised of 1062 individuals. The RCS plots revealed a U-shaped curve associating ABSI with AAC risk. A similar trend emerged for SAAC, where the risk initially increased before subsequently decreasing with rising ABSI levels. Additionally, BRI exhibited a positive correlation with both AAC and SAAC risk. As ABSI and BRI values increased, the degree of AAC also increased. In ROC analysis, ABSI displayed a significantly larger area under the curve compared to BRI. Conclusions: ABSI is associated with AAC prevalence following a U-shaped curve. Additionally, BRI is positively correlated with AAC risk. ABSI demonstrates a superior discriminative ability for AAC compared to BRI. Background: Our aim is to evaluate the relationship between prevalence of kidney stones (KS) and novel anthropometric indices (AHIs). Methods: Participants who participated in the KS questionnaire was extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2018.A series of covariates were also obtained. The novel AHIs include a body shape index (ABSI) and body roundness index (BRI). Weighted multivariable-adjusted logistic regression was performed to investigate the association of KS with AHIs. Results: After relative covariates were adjusted, a greater risk of KS for each z score increase in ABSI (OR = 1.13, 95%CI 1.05–1.22), and the risk of KS augmented by 19% for every 1 BRI z score added (OR = 1.19, 95%CI 1.11–1.27). The results from subgroup analysis showed that among adults aged 20–39 (OR = 1.31, 95%CI 1.04–1.65), male (OR = 1.14, 95%CI 1.02–1.28), the risk of KS is higher with the increase of each ABSI z score. Raising each BRI z score in those who were male aged 20–39 and 40–59 resulted in a higher risk of KS (aged 20–39: OR = 1.34, 95%CI 1.06–1.69; aged 40–59: OR = 1.29, 95%CI 1.09–1.53). In female aged 40–59, increasing each BRI z score led to a higher risk of KS (OR = 1.23, 95%CI 1.07–1.41). A linear association of ABSI z score with the risk of KS and a non-linear relationship between BRI z score and the risk of KS were discovered. AimsThe body roundness index (BRI) has good predictive ability for both body fat and visceral adipose tissue. Longitudinal BRI trajectories can reveal the potential dynamic patterns of change over time. This prospective study assessed potential associations between BRI trajectories and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) in rural regions of Northeast China.MethodsIn total, 13,209 participants (mean age: 49.0 ± 10.3 years, 6,856 [51.9%] male) were enrolled with three repeated times of BRI measurements at baseline (2004–2006), 2008, and 2010, and followed up until 2017 in this prospective study. Using latent mixture model, the BRI trajectories were determined based on the data from baseline, 2008 and 2010. Composite CVD events (myocardial infarction, stroke, and CVD death combined) was the primary endpoint. Cox proportional-hazards models were used to analyze the longitudinal associations between BRI trajectories and incident CVD.ResultsThree distinct BRI trajectories were identified: high-stable (n = 538), moderate-stable (n = 1,542), and low-stable (n = 11,129). In total, 1,382 CVD events were recorded during follow-up. After adjustment for confounders, the moderate-stable and high-stable BRI groups had a higher CVD risk than did the low-stable BRI group, and the HR (95%CI) were 1.346 (1.154, 1.571) and 1.751 (1.398, 2.194), respectively. Cox regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between different obesity indicators and DKD risk. Cox’s proportional hazards model was evaluated the predictive effect of obesity indices on DKD.Results: The risk of developing DKD increased with an increase in the BRI, LAP, VAI, WC and BMI (all P trend< 0.05), and the variability of VAI was significantly associated with DKD [HR=1.132, 95% CI (1.001, 1.281)] after adjusting for corresponding variables. BRI had the strongest predictive effect on DKD. BRI had the best predictive performance, with AUC of 0.807, 0.663 and 0.673 at 1, 3 and 5 years, respectively. Objectives: While several indicators have been studied, the association of body roundness index (BRI) with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. We aimed to explore the association between BRI and ultrasound-defined NAFLD. Methods: The sample dataset was extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) during the period of 2017–2018. The diagnosis of NAFLD was determined based on the controlled attenuated parameter (CAP≥248 dB/m) score of liver ultrasound transient elastography (LUTE). Participants with excessive alcohol use and viral hepatitis were excluded. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most frequent endocrine illnesses, often accompanied by visceral adiposity and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Visceral adiposity is an accurate predictor of MetS and cardiometabolic risk. This study aims to evaluate different anthropometric indices that can be used in PCOS and MetS risk assessment. A total of 66 women with PCOS (50%) and 66 controls (50%) were included, and clinical and biochemical parameters were evaluated. The body mass index (BMI), body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), dysfunctional adiposity index (DAI), lipid accumulation (LAP) index, and visceral adiposity index (VAI) were calculated. The means of all indices were higher in the PCOS group (p < 0.05). The marker with the lowest discriminatory ability for PCOS and MetS was ABSI (AUC = 0.762 and AUC = 0.714, respectively, p = 0.000). According to the multivariate logistic regression model, the VAI and WC are strong predictors of PCOS (AUC, 98%; accuracy, 92%; sensitivity, 92%; and specificity, 91%), and WC, LAP index, and BRI are strong predictors of MetS (AUC, 0.95%; accuracy, 86%; sensitivity, 83%; and specificity, 88%). Background: Measurement of an individual's anthropometric indices is one of the many methods for determining physical health status. This study was designed to test the reliability of some anthropometric indices in predicting central obesity among undergraduate students in Edo State, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: Random sampling was used in recruiting 843 undergraduate students aged 15-31 years old from Edo State University, Uzairue, Edo State, into this cross-sectional study. Traditional and new Anthropometric indices were determined by standard methods, and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test, Chi-square, and Mann--Whitney test, and correlations were determined and were deemed statistically significant at P < 0.05. Results: The majority of males (52.5%) and females (50.7%) were aged 19-22 years. Weight, height, waist circumference (WC), and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) were significantly higher in males than females (P < 0.05). Conversely, body mass index (BMI), body roundness index (BRI), and body adiposity index (BAI) were significantly higher in females compared to males (P < 0.05). The female participants had significantly higher pulse rates, oxygen saturation, and pulse pressure than the males (P < 0.05). The AUC constructed showed WC and Waist--height ratio predicted central obesity in both genders (AUC ≥ 0.9). A significant positive correlation of WHtRatio with MUAC was observed in female participants, while a significant inverse correlation was observed between BAI and a body shape index in male participants in this study. Background: B vitamins play a crucial role in the balance and metabolism of energy. Energy metabolism mainly benefits from the B-complex vitamins. Specifically, decarboxylation, transamination, acylation, oxidation, and reduction of substrates that are ultimately employed in energy intake require thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin B6. Vitamin deficiency could lead to chronic disease occurrence. Objectives: To assess the impact of energy-releasing B-vitamins intake (B1, B2, B3, and B6) on selected indices of obesity and cardiac function. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 491 apparently healthy adults (18-64 years old) between January and May 2019 at Hashemite University, Jordan. Anthropometric measurements were taken, lipid profiles were analyzed, and indices of obesity and cardiac function were calculated. The typical dietary intake of B1, B2, B3, and B6 vitamins was calculated. Results: Conicity index (CI) and abdominal volume index (AVI) scores significantly decreased with the increased adjusted vitamin B1 and B6 intake. Also, body roundness index (BRI), weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) scores were decreased with the increase of adjusted B6 intake ( pp=0.001) and BRI (r= 0.111, p=0.014). Similar correlations were detected among male participants between energy-adjusted B1 intake and BAI, AVI, and BRI. Female participants had a significant weak inverse correlation between BAI and energy-adjusted B2 (r= -0.180, p=0.029) and B6 intake (r= -0.212, p=0.010). Background: Kidney disease is related to visceral obesity. As a new indicator of obesity, body roundness index (BRI) has not been fully revealed with kidney disease. This study's objective is to assess the relationship between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and BRI among the Chinese population. Methods: This study enrolled 36,784 members over the age of 40, they were from 7 centers in China by using a random sampling method. BRI was computed using height and waist circumference, eGFR = 90 mL/min/1.73 m² was considered to indicate low eGFR. To lessen bias, propensity score matching was employed, multiple logistic regression models were utilized to examine the connection between low eGFR and BRI. Results: The age, diabetes and coronary heart disease rates, fasting blood glucose, and triglycerides were all greater in participants with low eGFR. The BRI quartile was still positively connected with low eGFR after controlling for confounding variables, according to multivariate logistic regression analysis. The body roundness index (BRI) was developed to provide a more accurate numerical quantifier of body roundness. The capability of BRI to predict body fat and visceral adipose tissue provides an impression that it may be capable of relating to cardiometabolic risks. This present study utilized the 8th National Nutrition Survey to determine the validity of BRI to screen for abnormal blood lipids among Filipino adults. The area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve (AUC) was used as the validity measure. BRI had AUCs of 0.641 (95% CI: 0.627-0.655) in men and 0.635 (95% CI: 0.621-0.649) in women. In terms of criterion validity, the AUCs of BRI were compared to the AUCs of widely accepted anthropometric indices - namely, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-hip ratio (WHR). BRI significantly outperformed WHR in men, BMI in women, and WC in both sexes in screening abnormal blood lipids. Therefore, BRI had a discriminative capability to screen for abnormal blood lipids among Filipino adults. The optimal BRI cut-off points for screening abnormal blood lipids were identified as 2.71 for men and 3.44 for women based on [a] the maximum Youden Index value and [b] a rule that sensitivity should be greater than specificity. Filipino adults whose BRI exceeds the sex-specific cut-off points for screening abnormal blood lipids might consider further screening or diagnosis of abnormal blood lipids for effective case management. BackgroundObesity affects body composition and anthropometric measurements. A Body Shape Index (ABSI) and Body Roundness Index (BRI) are reportedly associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the relationship between ABSI, BRI, cardiometabolic factors, and inflammatory elements is not well-elucidated. Therefore, this study sought to examine the mediatory effect of inflammatory markers on the association between ABSI and BRI with cardiometabolic risk factors in overweight and obese women.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was performed on 394 obese and overweight women. The typical food intake of individuals was assessed using a 147-item semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Biochemical parameters, such as inflammatory markers and anthropometric components, were also assessed. For each participant, all measurements were carried out on the same day.ResultThere was a significant positive association between ABSI and AC and CRI.I in subjects with higher ABSI scores before and after adjustment (P < 0.05). In addition, there was a significant positive association between BRI and FBS, TC, TG, AIP, AC, CRI.I, CRI.II, and TyG in participants with higher BRI scores before and after adjustment (P < 0.05). We found that hs-CRP, PAI-1, MCP-1, TGF-β, and Galectin-3 were mediators of these relationships (P < 0.05).ConclusionInflammation can play an important role in the relationship between body shape indices and cardiometabolic risk factors among overweight and obese women.

ObjectivesThe body roundness index (BRI) is a novel anthropometric index that is a better indicator for predicting fat distribution than the body mass index (BMI). The longitudinal study can repeatedly collect measured results for the variables to be studied and then consider the potential effects of intraindividual changes in measurement. However, few population-based, longitudinal studies of BRI have been conducted, especially among the Chinese population. The study aimed to investigate the association of BRI and its longitudinal trajectories with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.MethodsA total of 71,166 participants with four times BRI measurements between January 2010 and December 2019 were included in this longitudinal study, with a median follow-up was 7.93 years, and 11,538 deaths were recorded, of which 5,892 deaths were due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). A latent class growth mixture modeling (LCGMM) was used to identify BRI trajectories. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate associations between BRI trajectories and the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.ResultsIn the restricted cubic spline regression models, a U-shaped relationship between BRI and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality was observed. Three BRI longitudinal trajectories of low-stable (mean BRI = 2.59), moderate-stable (mean BRI = 3.30), and high-stable (mean BRI = 3.65) were identified by LCGMM. After being adjusted for potential confounders, the HRs for all-cause mortality were 1.18 (1.13–1.24) for the moderate-stable group and 1.74 (1.66–1.82) for the high-stable group compared to the low-stable group. The HRs for cardiovascular mortality were 1.12 (1.05–1.18) for the moderate-stable group and 1.64 (1.53–1.75) for the high-stable group compared to the low-stable group.ConclusionA nonlinear association of BRI with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality was observed, and participants in the higher BRI longitudinal trajectory group were significantly associated with an increased risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the association between body roundness index (BRI) and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in general population.Design: A retrospective cohort study.Setting: The status of cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality of participants were followed through 31 December 2015. Multivariate adjusted Cox restricted cubic spline regression models and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to evaluate the relationship between BRI and cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality.Participants: A sample of 47 356 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 1999-2014 with aged ≥18 years.Results: Mean age was 47 years and female were 49·9 %. During a median follow-up of 92 months, 4715 participants died from any cause, with 985 died of CVD. In multivariate adjusted Cox regression, compared with the lowest quartile of Body roundness index (BRI), the hazard ratios (HR) for all-cause mortality from other quartiles were 0·83, 95 % CI (0·75, 0·92), 0·73, 95 % CI (0·65, 0·81) and 0·80, 95 % CI (0·72, 0·89), respectively (Pfor trend < 0·05) and the HR for cardiovascular mortality from other quartiles were 0·79, 95 % CI (0·62, 1·00), 0·78, 95 % CI (0·62, 0·99) and 0·79, 95 % CI (0·62, 1·01), respectively (P for trend > 0·05). In the restricted cubic spline regression models, the relationship was showed U-shaped between BRI and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality. In Kaplan-Meier survival curves, the lowest cumulative survival rate of cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality was recorded in the highest BRI quartile.Conclusions: The U-shaped association between BRI and all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in a large population-based cohort was observed. Abstract Aims Body roundness index (BRI) is an obesity‐related anthropometric index that combines waist circumference and height to better reflect body fat. This study aims to prospectively explore the relationship between BRI and the risk of heart failure (HF) based on a community‐based cohort. Methods and results A total of 140 362 individuals without tumour and HF at baseline were included from the Kailuan cohort study. Their demographic information, anthropometric parameters, and biochemical indexes were collected or measured. The participants were followed up until 31 December 2016 or death or diagnosed with HF, whichever came first. Cox proportional hazards model was used to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident HF. Restricted cubic spline analysis was applied to further evaluate the possible non‐linear dose–response relationship between BRI and the risk of HF. After a median follow‐up period of 9.84 years, we identified 1990 HF events. The participants were grouped into four groups according to the quartiles of BRI (Q1: ≤2.93, Q2: 2.93–3.59, Q3: 3.59–4.38, and Q4: ≥4.38). After adjustment for potential confounders, compared with the group of participants in the lowest quartile of BRI, the adjusted HRs (95%CI) were 1.03 (95%CI: 0.87–1.22), 1.27 (95%CI: 1.07–1.49), and 1.50 (95%CI: 1.26–1.78) for subjects in the Q2, Q3, and Q4 groups, respectively. With each standard deviation (here is 1.10) of BRI increasing, the risk of HF increased by 18% (HR: 1.18, 95%CI: 1.12–1.24). Abstract Background Body roundness index (BRI) is one of the obesity-related anthropometric indices. However, studies on the relationship between BRI and diabetes risk is limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between baseline BRI and incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Japanese population. Methods A retrospective longitudinal study of 15,310 participants in a physical examination program at Murakami Memorial Hospital in Japan from 2004 to 2015. The association between BRI levels and incident T2DM was analyzed by Cox proportional-hazards regression, smooth curve fitting, subgroup analyses, and a set of sensitivity analyses. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to assess the ability of BRI to predict diabetes. Result Baseline BRI levels were elevated in participants who developed T2DM. Baseline BRI levels were positively associated with incident T2DM after adjusting confounding variables (HR = 1.570, 95% CI 1.360–1.811). Additionally, we did a set of sensitivity analyses to ensure the robustness of the results. There was also a non-linear relationship between BRI and incident diabetes in both genders, and the inflection point of BRI was 4.137 in females and 3.146 in males. We found a strong positive correlation between BRI and the incidence of diabetes on the right of the inflection point (Male: HR = 1.827, 95% CI 1.449–2.303; Female: HR = 4.189, 95% CI 1.862–9.421). What’s more, among the anthropometric indices, BRI showed the optimal capability to predict T2DM (Male: AUC = 0.706, 95% CI 0.674–0.738; Female: AUC = 0.735, 95% CI 0.676–0.795). Conclusion An elevated BRI level in baseline was independently associated with incident T2DM. Baseline BRI improves the identification of patients at risk of T2DM and may enable early and optimized therapy to improve their outcomes.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a growing chronic disease that can lead to disability and early death. This study aimed to establish a predictive model for the 10-year incidence of T2DM based on novel anthropometric indices. This was a prospective cohort study comparing people with (n = 1256) and without (n = 5193) diabetes mellitus in phase II of the Mashhad Stroke and Heart Atherosclerotic Disorder (MASHAD) study. The association of several anthropometric indices in phase I, including Body Mass Index (BMI), Body Adiposity Index (BAI), Abdominal Volume Index (AVI), Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI), Weight-Adjusted-Waist Index (WWI), Body Roundness Index (BRI), Body Surface Area (BSA), Conicity Index (C-Index) and Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP) with T2DM incidence (in phase II) were examined; using Logistic Regression (LR) and Decision Tree (DT) analysis. BMI followed by VAI and LAP were the best predictors of T2DM incidence. Participants with BMI < 21.25 kg/m2 and VAI ≤ 5.9 had a lower chance of diabetes than those with higher BMI and VAI levels (0.033 vs. 0.967 incident rate).
