ABO blood group antigens are critical determinants of immunologic self and non-self and are ubiquitously expressed on all cellular tissues. Antibodies against non-self ABO antigens are naturally present and can mediate pathologic reactions against incompatible transfused blood cells and transplanted tissues. Laboratory testing for ABO antigens and isoagglutinins is essential for safe and effective transfusion and transplantation. Testing for ABO antigens has traditionally depended on serologic testing. However, there is increasing need for evaluation of genetic analysis of ABO antigens, to enable evaluation of ABO blood group in cases where serologic testing may be ambiguous or impossible to accurately perform. The clinical need for ABO genotyping is being addressed by the development of multiple molecular diagnostic approaches. Recent data have clearly demonstrated the potential utility of ABO genotyping in solid organ transplantation, yet widespread implementation has been slow. We propose that this lag is related to practical considerations in laboratory testing, including limited regulatory guidance on the performance and reporting of these assays and the absence of widely available external proficiency testing programs for quality assurance. Here we describe approaches to ABO genotyping, current initiatives in developing ABO genotyping proficiency testing programs, and laboratory quality assurance considerations for ABO genotyping.

Evaluating the association of ABO blood group with different delayed hypersensitivity reactions, such as oral lichenoid reaction (OLR), can provide a new perspective for clinical practice. Therefore, this study designed to investigate ABO blood group antigens in OLR patients. In this case–control study, the ABO blood group of 112 OLR patients and 117 individuals without oral lesions were included. Gender, age, characteristics of the lesions, medications and restorative materials recorded. Chi-square test used to compare the frequency of ABO blood groups in OLR patients with controls. The O blood group was significantly higher in OLR patients and all its subtypes. Also, there were significant relation between O blood group, and severity of lesions. The frequency of dysplasia was non-statistically significant higher in OLR patients with O blood group than other blood group. Based on the results of the present study, O blood group was significantly more in patients with lichenoid reaction than control group, and AB blood group was the lowest. Background: Whether the relationships between ABO blood genotypes (AA, AO, BB, BO, AB, and OO) and dementia are modified by gender and APOE status has been unclear. Methods: We used data from the UK Biobank, a population-based cohort study of 487,425 individuals. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) between ABO genotypes and risk of dementia. Multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate the relationship between ABO genotypes and MRI-based brain indices. Results: Overall, 487,425 participants were included at baseline. After 34 million person-years follow up, 7,548 patients developed all-cause dementia. Before stratifying by sex and APOE status, compared to OO genotype, BB genotype was associated with increased risk of all-cause dementia (1.36, 1.03–1.80) and other types dementia (1.65, 1.20–2.28). After stratifying by sex, only in males, BB genotype was associated with higher risk of all-cause dementia (1.44, 1.02–2.09) and other types of dementia (1.95, 1.30–2.93). AB genotype in males was also associated with increased AD (1.34, 1.04–1.72). After further stratifying by APOE e4 status, BB genotype with two APOE e4 alleles showed even stronger association with all-cause dementia 4.29 (1.57, 11.72) and other types dementia (5.49, 1.70–17.69) in males. Also in males, AA genotype with one APOE e4 was associated with increased risks of all-cause dementia (1.27, 1.04–1.55), AD (1.45, 1.09–1.94) and other types dementia (1.40, 1.08–1.81). Linear regression models showed that in both sexes with APOE e4, AA genotype was associated with reduced total grey matter volume. Conclusion: Sex and APOE e4 carrier status modified the association between ABO genotypes and risk of dementia. In males, BB genotype was consistently associated with increased risk of dementia, especially in those with two APOE e4 alleles. Background/Aim. The purpose of tests for transmittable diseases, as well as determining ABO group, Rh typing, and the presence of clinically significant erythrocyte antibodies, is to enable the appropriate selection of blood/blood components for transfusion, to prevent or minimize adverse effects of transfusion, and to identify donors whose units of blood/components are not suitable for transfusion. The aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of irregular erythrocyte antibodies as well as to determine the specificity and origin of these antibodies in voluntary donors. Methods. This prospective observational study, conducted from January until July 2023, included samples of voluntary blood donors (BDs) for antibody screening in the population of voluntary BDs in the territory of Southeast Serbia. A total of 23,082 samples from healthy BD were examined through this period. Results. The overall prevalence of irregular anti-erythrocyte antibodies was 0.1125%, with anti-K, anti-D, and anti-E being the most frequently identified alloantibodies. Out of a total of 26 donors with positive screening results, 11 (42.32%) had alloantibodies, and 15 (57.68%) had antibodies of undetermined specificity. A positive antibody test was observed more frequently in male donors, and the age range of 51 years and above accounted for the majority of positive cases. Conclusion. Immunohematological testing, including antibody screening in voluntary BDs, is important for safe blood transfusion and is of great clinical importance. BACKGROUND: Due to platelet availability limitations, platelet units ABO mismatched to recipients are often transfused. However, since platelets express ABO antigens and are collected in plasma which may contain ABO isohemagglutinins, it remains controversial as to whether ABO non-identical platelet transfusions could potentially pose harm and/or have reduced efficacy. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The large 4-year publicly available Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study-III (REDS-III) database was used to investigate patient outcomes associated with ABO non-identical platelet transfusions. Outcomes included mortality, sepsis, and subsequent platelet transfusion requirements. RESULTS: Following adjustment for possible confounding factors, no statistically significant association between ABO non-identical platelet transfusion and increased risk of mortality was observed in the overall cohort of 21,176 recipients. However, when analyzed by diagnostic category and recipient ABO group, associations with increased mortality for major mismatched transfusions were noted in two of eight subpopulations. Hematology/Oncology blood group A and B recipients (but not group O) showed a Hazard Ratio (HR) of 1.29 (95%CI: 1.03-1.62) and intracerebral hemorrhage group O recipients (but not groups A and B) showed a HR of 1.75 (95%CI: 1.10-2.80). Major mismatched transfusions were associated with increased odds of receiving additional platelet transfusion each post-transfusion day (through day 5) regardless of the recipient blood group. DISCUSSION: We suggest that prospective studies are needed to determine if specific patient populations would benefit from receiving ABO identical platelet units. Our findings indicate that ABO-identical platelet products minimize patient exposure to additional platelet doses.

Naturally occurring antibodies against ABO antigens present in human sera have been shown to neutralize ABO-expressing HIV in vitro. We investigated associations between ABO and RhD blood groups and HIV infection among blood donors from all blood collection centers in eight of South Africas nine provinces. Whole blood donations collected from first time donors between January 2012 and September 2016 were tested for HIV RNA by nucleic acid testing and HIV antibody using third generation serology assays. ABO and RhD blood types were determined using automated technology. Odds ratios for the association between HIV positivity and ABO and RhD phenotypes were calculated using multivariable logistic regression analysis. We analyzed 515,945 first time blood donors and the overall HIV prevalence was 1.12% (n = 5790). After multivariable adjustment, HIV infection was weakly associated with RhD positive phenotype (OR = 1.15, 95% CI 1.00-1.33) but not with ABO blood group. The observed association with RhD positive phenotype was marginal and likely due to residual confounding by racial group but could serve to generate hypotheses for further studies.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP)- and leukocyte levels are common parameters to evaluate the inflammatory response after orthopaedic surgery and rule out infectious complications. Nevertheless, both parameters are vulnerable to disturbing biases and therefore leave room for interpretation. OBJECTIVE: Since blood groups are repeatedly discussed to influence inflammatory response, our aim was to observe their impact on CRP and leukocyte levels after total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA). METHODS: Short term postoperative CRP and leukocyte levels of 987 patients, who received either primary TKH (n = 479) or THA (n = 508), were retrospectively correlated with their blood group. ABO, Rhesus and a combination of both blood groups were differentiated. RESULTS: CRP levels after TKA were significantly higher in blood type AB than in type A and O on day 2–4 and also than in type A on day 6–8. Leukocyte levels after THA were significantly higher in blood group type O than in type A on day 6–8 while still remaining in an apathological range. We observed no significant differences between Rhesus types and Rhesus types and CRP or leukocyte levels. CONCLUSION: We observed significantly increased CRP levels after TKA in patients with blood group AB. Since the elevated CRP levels do not account for early periprosthetic infection, surgeons should include this variation in their postoperative evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Patient blood group (BG) is predictive for von-Willebrand-factor (VWF) and Factor VIII variation. The clinical impact of this ABO-effect on blood loss, cardiovascular complications and outcome has been described for several patient cohorts. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of patient BG on blood loss and outcome after coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG). Patient records, intraoperative data and perioperative transfusion records of 5713 patients receiving an on-pump CABG procedure between 05/2004 and 12/2018 were analyzed. A logistic regression model for death due to perioperative myocardial ischaemia (PMI) was developed from initially 24 variables by using an univariate and multivariate selection process. BG AB patients required less blood transfusions as compared to the other blood groups, especially in case of emergency operations. However, BG AB patients also had a higher mortality which was due to secondary cardiovascular complications. The impact of blood type on the rate of cardiovascular mortality was confirmed in the logistic regression model. BG AB patients have a worse outcome after CABG surgery due to an increased incidence of fatal cardiovascular complications. As perioperative myocardial ischemia due to graft occlusion appears to be the most likely explanation, stricter anticoagulation for BG AB patients should be discussed. Highlights: Patient blood group (BG) is predictive for perioperative blood loss, thrombembolic complications and outcome. We investigated the impact of patient BG on blood loss and outcome after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Background: Colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is a rare subtype of malignant adenocarcinoma, accounting for approximately 1 % of colorectal cancer (CRC) cases. Its biomarkers and molecular characteristics remain controversial, and there are no specific therapeutic targets or strategies for its clinical treatment. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted between January 2010 and December 2021. 1058 colorectal cancer cases from the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center and 489 cases from the Tumor Genome Atlas Project were included in the analysis, of which 64 were SRCC. Data extraction included patient demographics, blood types and risk factors, including clinical variables and genomics (either a 19-gene panel NGS or 1021-gene panel NGS). Univariate analyses were performed to identify factors significantly associated with overall survival. Results: The blood groups of 27 (42.2 %), 18 (28.1 %), 12 (18.8 %), and seven (10.9 %) patients were classified as O, A, B, and AB, respectively. We found that O was a unique blood group characterized by a low frequency of KRAS mutations, a high frequency of heterozygosity at each HLA class I locus, and a high tumor mutational burden (TMB). Patients in blood group A with high-frequency KRAS mutations and those in blood group B with anemia and metabolic abnormalities required targeted treatment. Furthermore, genetic alterations in SRCC differed from those in adenocarcinoma and mucinous adenocarcinoma. Conclusions: Our study revealed genomic changes in SRCC patients across different blood groups, which could advance the understanding and precise treatment of colorectal SRCC.

ABO is the most widely utilized blood group system. Bombay blood group is a rare subtype of autosomal recessive group with absence of H antigen and presence of anti-H, anti-Aand anti-B antibodies. We present a case of a 51-yearold lady posted for hemithyroidectomy and incidentally detected to be of Bombay blood group when a blood unit was reserved for surgery. She was a non-secretor for H substance on saliva inhibition test. History of consanguineous marriage was present. We wish to reaffirm that ardent effort has to be undertaken to confirm all 'O' group individuals with reverse grouping during routine testing for blood groups, failing which the rare Bombay blood group can be misdiagnosed as 'O' resulting in an acute haemolytic reaction if any unit other than that of Bombay blood group is transfused. Individuals with this group need to be counselled about rarity and clinical implications of the same.

Liver transplantation is a critical procedure for patients with end-stage liver disease, but it is often hindered by ABO-incompatibility between the donor and recipient, which can lead to immediate humoral rejection. We present a unique case involving a 10-month-old patient who, by accident, received an ABO-incompatible partial liver transplant from a type A mother without undergoing desensitization. Remarkably, during a 21-year follow-up period, the patient exhibited no signs of humoral or graft rejection, despite nonadherence to medication. This case highlights the possibility of dual tolerance in pediatric ABO-incompatible liver transplantation and provides insights into immune tolerance mechanisms, with implications for enhancing patient care and reducing healthcare costs. Further research is necessary to clarify these mechanisms and to evaluate the long-term durability of tolerance in pediatric transplant recipients.

Background and Objectives: Assessment of bleeding time (BT), clotting time (CT), and ABO blood groups holds significant clinical relevance, particularly in the context of various conditions like thrombosis, epistaxis, and cardiac surgery. However, the existing literature presents contradictory findings concerning the correlation between bleeding time, clotting time, and the ABO blood groups. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to investigate and elucidate the potential associations between bleeding time and clotting time across the four ABO blood groups in surgical patients. Materials and Methods: The present investigation encompassed individuals aged between 18 and 70 years. BT assessment was conducted utilizing Duke's method with Whatman filter paper, while CT was determined employing the capillary tube method. Additionally, ABO blood grouping was performed on all participating patients. The potential association between bleeding time, clotting time, and the ABO blood groups was statistically analyzed using the Chisquare test. Results: A total of 157 patients, with 57% males and 43% females, were recruited for this study. The distribution of ABO blood groups among the participants was as follows: 47.77% (75/157) had blood group "O", 28.03% (44/157) had blood group "B," 17.83% (28/157) had blood group "A," and 6.37% (10/157) had blood group "AB." Neither BT nor CT in the cohort of participants exhibited any significant association with the ABO blood groups. Conclusion: BT or CT values are not dependent upon ABO blood groups in either gender. The results of this study contribute to the existing knowledge in the field of medical sciences and may serve as a basis for further investigations in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human genetic variation affects the gut microbiota through a complex combination of environmental and host factors. Here we characterize genetic variations associated with microbial abundances in a single large-scale population-based cohort of 5,959 genotyped individuals with matched gut microbial metagenomes, and dietary and health records (prevalent and follow-up). We identified 567 independent SNP-taxon associations. Variants at the LCT locus associated with Bifidobacterium and other taxa, but they differed according to dairy intake. Furthermore, levels of Faecalicatena lactaris associated with ABO, and suggested preferential utilization of secreted blood antigens as energy source in the gut. Enterococcus faecalis levels associated with variants in the MED13L locus, which has been linked to colorectal cancer. Mendelian randomization analysis indicated a potential causal effect of Morganella on major depressive disorder, consistent with observational incident disease analysis. Overall, we identify and characterize the intricate nature of host-microbiota interactions and their association with disease.

Background : Pretransplant therapies such as rituximab and plasmapheresis have led to an increase in ABO-incompatible (ABOi) living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), thus helping to overcome organ shortages. This study evaluated the changes in anti-A/B titers and CD19 levels over time in patients undergoing ABOi LT and aimed to understand the effect of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in Fc gamma receptor (FcγR) on rituximab therapy. Methods : Two SNPs of FCGR2A (131H/R) and FCGR3A (158F/V) were identified. The clinical data on 44 patients who underwent ABOi LDLT between May 2019 and October 2021 at Seoul National University Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Results : Following desensitization with rituximab and subsequent LDLT, the anti-A/B titer recovered within 1 week, but decreased thereafter. The CD19 level increased at 3 months after LT. The genotyping data for FCGR3A (158F/V) indicated that two patients had the V/V genotype, and 42 had the F/V genotype. In the genotyping data for FCGR2A (131H/R), 21 patients had the H/H genotype, three had the R/R genotype, and 20 had the H/R genotype. However, there were no significant differences in anti-A/B and CD19 levels, bacteremia rates, T cell-mediated rejection, antibody-mediated rejection, or the survival rate among the FCGR2A types. Conclusions: There were significant changes in the anti-A/B titers and CD19 levels over time in each patient after ABOi LDLT. The difference in outcomes following LT according to the FcγR SNP type for rituximab was unclear. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm the effect of FcγR SNPs on rituximab therapy.

Abstract Objectives This study evaluated the relationship between acquired cataract’s different types and the ABO and Rh blood classes. Methods Overall, 520 patients, by randomized sampling method, participated in this retrospective cross-sectional study. After reviewing the patient’s medical records and laboratory results, the patient’s demographics, ABO group, Rh, and cataract type were documented. Results A total of 520 patients were included in the research, with a mean age of 67.57 ± 11.85. Most of them were female (n = 286, 55%). Mix (n = 230, 44%) and nuclear sclerotic (NS) (n = 167, 32%) cataracts were the most common types. The posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) prevalence in females was significantly higher than in males (16.1% vs.7.3% p = 0.002). Also, men had more NS cataracts than females (89, 38% vs. 78, 27.3%) (p = 0.009). Patients with PSC were significantly younger than others (all p-values 0.05). Conclusion Although our findings showed that cataract types are independent of blood group types and Rh, they can be compared with future studies on the association of other Blood-Group Systems in developing acquired cataracts.

BackgroundThis pilot assessed transfusion requirements during resuscitation with whole blood followed by standard component therapy (CT) versus CT alone, during a change in practice at a large urban Level I trauma center.MethodsThis was a single-center prospective cohort pilot study. Male trauma patients received up to 4 units of cold-stored low anti-A, anti-B group O whole blood (LTOWB) as initial resuscitation followed by CT as needed (LTOWB + CT). A control group consisting of women and men who presented when LTOWB was unavailable, received CT only (CT group). Exclusion criteria included antiplatelet or anticoagulant medication and death within 24 hours. The primary outcome was total transfusion volume at 24 hours. Secondary outcomes were mortality, morbidity, and intensive care unit- and hospital-free days.ResultsThirty-eight patients received LTOWB, with a median of 2.0 (interquartile range [IQR] 1.0-3.0) units of LTOWB transfused. Thirty-two patients received CT only. At 24 hours after presentation, the LTOWB +CT group had received a median of 2,138 mL (IQR, 1,275-3,325 mL) of all blood products. The median for the CT group was 4,225 mL (IQR, 1,900-5,425 mL; p = 0.06) in unadjusted analysis. When adjusted for Injury Severity Score, sex, and positive Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma, LTOWB +CT group patients received 3307 mL of blood products, and CT group patients received 3,260 mL in the first 24 hours (p = 0.95). The adjusted median ratio of plasma to red cells transfused was higher in the LTOWB + CT group (0.85 vs. 0.63 at 24 hours after admission; p = 0.043. Adjusted mortality was 4.4% in the LTOWB + CT group, and 11.7% in the CT group (p = 0.19), with similar complications, intensive care unit-, and hospital-free days in both groups.ConclusionBeginning resuscitation with LTOWB results in equivalent outcomes compared with resuscitation with CT only.Level of evidenceTherapeutic (Prospective study with 1 negative criterion, limited control of confounding factors), level III.

Objective To determine the association between the ABO blood group and preeclampsia. Methods This is a case-control study that included patients with (n = 253) and without (n = 457) preeclampsia/eclampsia in Northeastern Mexico. Data were obtained from electronic medical records. Binary multiple logistic regression analysis was used for analyzing the association between the ABO blood group and preeclampsia according to parity status while adjusting for potential confounders. Results Blood groups A, B, and AB showed adjusted odds ratios of 0.6 (95%CI 0.3-1.0), 1.1 (95%CI 0.6-2.2), and 0.3 (95%CI 0.1-1.1) in multiparous women, respectively. No association was found in nulliparous women either. Conclusions ABO blood groups were not associated with preeclampsia in Mexican women.

Background: Colorectal cancer, a solid tumor with a high prevalence, contributes significantly to annual mortality rates. Various factors, including blood groups, may influence cancer risk. Multiple studies have suggested a potential connection between ABO and Rh blood groups and colorectal cancer risk. This study aims to investigate the role of ABO and Rh blood groups as risk factors in colorectal cancer patients. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study involving 71 colorectal cancer patients diagnosed between 2018 and 2020 in Khuzestan province, Iran, with known ABO blood types. Large-scale data from 29,922 blood donors in Khuzestan served as the healthy population control. The study analyzed the distribution of ABO blood groups among the blood donors. Results: Our findings revealed that the distribution of blood groups among colorectal cancer patients was as follows: O (31.0%), A (29.6%), B (29.6%), and AB (9.8%). However, our analysis did not establish a significant association between colorectal cancer risk and ABO antigens (P-value = 0.636) or Rh blood group (P = 0.198). Additionally, no significant differences in ABO blood types were observed concerning gender (P = 0.802), cancer type (P = 0.338), or tumor type (P = 0.207) among colorectal cancer patients. Conclusion: This study does not support a significant correlation between ABO and Rh blood groups and the risk of colorectal cancer, nor does it find associations with cancer type or tumor type. The posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) prevalence in females was significantly higher than in males (16.1% vs.7.3% p = 0.002). Also, men had more NS cataracts than females (89, 38% vs. 78, 27.3%) (p = 0.009). Patients with PSC were significantly younger than others (all p-values < 0.001). Our results showed that cataract types are independent of blood group types and Rh (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Although our findings showed that cataract types are independent of blood group types and Rh, they can be compared with future studies on the association of other Blood-Group Systems in developing acquired cataracts. Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) enjoys widespread use in Asia, but remains limited to a handful of centers in North America and comprises only 5% of liver transplants performed in the United States. In contrast, living donor kidney transplantation is used frequently in the United States, and has evolved to commonly include paired exchanges, particularly for ABO-incompatible pairs. Liver paired exchange (LPE) has been utilized in Asia, and was recently reported in Canada; here we report the first LPE performed in the United States, and the first LPE to be performed on consecutive days. The LPE performed at our institution was initiated by a nondirected donor who enabled the exchange for an ABO-incompatible pair, and the final recipient was selected from our deceased donor waitlist. The exchange was performed over the course of 2 consecutive days, and relied on the use and compliance of a bridge donor. Here, we show that LPE is feasible at centers with significant LDLT experience and affords an opportunity to expand LDLT in cases of ABO incompatibility or when nondirected donors arise. To our knowledge, this represents the first exchange of its kind in the United States.

Abstract Background Asplenia vaccination is employed before ABO‐incompatible (ABOi) transplantation in case splenectomy is needed. Pneumococcal vaccines have been reported, in different patient groups, to increase anti‐A/B titers, through cross‐reactivity to shared polysaccharide epitopes. We investigated the impact of pretransplant asplenia vaccinations on anti‐A/B antibody titers in prospective ABOi renal transplant recipients. Methods Published asplenia vaccine microbial structures were reviewed to assess expression of A/B antigens. All patients who underwent ABOi transplantation at Monash Medical Centre with anti‐A/B titers taken either side of asplenia vaccination were included in a retrospective cohort study between 2007 and 2021. Patients with paired titers without intervening vaccination were included as controls. Paired titers were compared within groups. Results A and B antigens were found to be expressed by vaccine specific pneumococcal serotypes. Thirty‐nine ABOi renal transplant recipients received vaccination including at least one pneumococcal vaccine. The most common donor to recipient combination was A1 to O. The median pre‐ and postvaccination anti‐A/B titers were 1:32 and there was no significant change in titers following vaccination (median change in titer 0 dilutions, range –2 to 3, P = 0.43). The same findings were apparent in the control group (n = 20). There was no significant change in titer by donor blood group or vaccine type. No transplants were canceled or delayed by a rise in anti‐A/B titers postvaccination. Conclusion Pneumococcal vaccination had no clinically relevant impact on anti‐A/B titers before ABOi transplantation in this cohort. These results provide reassurance regarding the safety of asplenia vaccination before ABOi transplantation.

Objective To investigate the correlation between congenital patent processus vaginalis（PPV) disease and ABO blood group.Methods The retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 1 128 children patients（case group) with PPV admitted and treated in this hospital from January 2003 to December 2021 and 4208 children cases of other diseases（control group) at the same time.According to the disease type, the case group was divided into the indirect inguinal hernia group（738 cases), spermatic cord hydrocele group（228 cases) and cryptorchidism group（162 cases).The ABO blood group distribution situation was compared among the groups. Results The A, B, O and AB blood groups in the indirect inguinal hernia group accounted for 28.3%（209/738), 28.5%（210/738), 28.7%（212/738) and 14.5%（107/738) respectively, which in the control group accounted for 29.9%（1 257/4 208), 29.4%（1 237/4 208), 22.6%（949/4 208) and 18.2%（765/4 208) respectively. The blood group constitution had statistically significant difference between the two groups（P＜0.05).The risk of indirect inguinal hernia in children with type A, B and AB blood groups was lower than that in children with type O blood group [odds ratio（OR) =0.744（95%CI: 0.604-0.917, P=0.006), 0.760（95%CI:0.617-0.936, P=0.010), 0.626（95%CI:0.487-0.805, P=0.000)], respectively. After adjusting the influencing factors such as the age, sex and nationality, the risk of suffering from indirect inguinal hernia in the children with type O blood group was higher than that in the children with non-type O blood group[OR=1.396（95%CI:1.160-1.679, P＜0.001), and the risk of indirect inguinal hernia in the children with type AB blood was lower than that in the children with non-type AB blood group [OR=0.742（95%CI:0.590-0.934), P=0.011].Conclusion Among the children patients diagnosed and treated in this hospital, there is a possible correlation between indirect inguinal hernia occurrence due to congenital PPV and ABO blood group and ABO blood group is an influencing factor for indirect inguinal hernia occurrence in children. Purpose: The aim of our study was to investigate the association of ABO phenotypes and genotypes with colorectal cancer prevalence in Croatian population. Methods: Study included 80 patients (51 men) with colorectal cancer and 303 healthy volunteer blood donors (180 men) in the control group. Using the PCR-SSP method, genotyping was performed on 5 main alleles (O1, O2, A1, A2, B), resulting in 15 ABO genotypes. Results: There was no difference in the prevalence of colorectal cancer between men and women. There was no difference in a specific blood group phenotype between patients and healthy controls. However, there was a statistically significant higher odds ratio for individuals to carry blood group A than O in patients with colorectal cancer. There was no significant higher odds ratio for non-O genotypes compared to all genotypes constituting O blood group in patients with colorectal cancer. Conclusion: Our study has shown that there are higher odds for blood group A in colorectal patients than O when compared to healthy controls, suggesting blood group A could be a potential risk factor for colorectal cancer. This is accordant with some previously published studies. Further studies with larger group of patients and controls are needed to confirm this observation.

Objective ABO typing constitutes cell grouping and serum grouping. The discrepancy may arise in ABO typing due to a mismatch in cell grouping and serum grouping. It may be due to technical errors, missing or weak ABO antibodies (type I), weak ABO subgroups (type II), Rouleaux formation (type III), or other miscellaneous reasons (type IV). This study was carried out to determine the prevalence and cause of ABO blood group discrepancy in donor samples at our center. Methods A retrospective study of ABO blood group typing of blood donors was conducted at our center. The blood group typing was routinely performed using gel cards and a microcentrifuge system (Tulip Diagnostics(P) Ltd, Goa, India). If any discrepancy in ABO typing was noted, the test was repeated using the conventional tube technique. After sorting clerical/technical error, the causes of discrepancy were analyzed and resolved using anti-A1, anti-H, anti-AB, and other immunohematological tests like antibody screening and identification, saliva inhibition test, adsorption-elution studies. Results A total of 12,715 (98.6% males and 1.4% females) donor samples were tested. The number of ABO discrepancies detected were 15 (0.12%). The discrepancies were characterized as type I (6 cases; 40%), type II (1 case; 6.7%), type III (0 cases; 0%), and type IV (8 cases; 53.3%). Three cases, each of anti-M and anti-Leb, were detected in the study population. A single case of A3, a subgroup of A blood group, was found during the study. Conclusion The prevalence of ABO group discrepancy was 0.12% at our center. Discrepancy arising during ABO typing of blood donor must be resolved before reporting ABO blood group to minimize the recipient's chances of transfusion reaction. The serum grouping is equally crucial as cell grouping for reporting the ABO group of an individual.

Aim: This study aimed to examine the association of ABO and RhD blood groups with COVID-19 mortality of patients hospitalized in the COVID ward at General Hospital Karlovac. Participants and methods: The study included data about 778 patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in the COVID ward at General Hospital Karlovac from March 2020 to the end of December 2021. Data about the hospitalized patients’ age, sex, blood groups, RhD status, comorbidities, oxygen, respirator use, vaccination, and disease course and outcome were obtained from the Hospital Management System. Furthermore, the association of ABO and RhD blood groups with the number of days in the hospital and the mortality rate was examined. Results: The prevalent blood group was O, with 283 patients (36.4%), while the A blood group was the second most common (35.8%). The least common blood group was AB (7.6%). At the time of hospitalization, a small number of patients had been vaccinated, only 8.1%. The overall COVID-19-associated mortality of 25.9% was observed. The mortality rate was 39.7% in blood group A, 24.2% in group B, 23.7% in group AB and 23.7% in group O (P = 0.588). The mortality rate from the COVID-19 disease was higher in RhD-positive (26.4%) compared to RhD-negative individuals (23.7%). The largest number of patients on a respirator (16.5%) were A blood group. Conclusion: The study did not find a significant association between the ABO and RhD blood group and the COVID-19 severity and mortality among patients hospitalized in the COVID ward at General Hospital Karlovac. According to the importance of cancer, it is necessary to understand predisposing factors that affect cancer risk. In this regard, previous studies suggest that blood types particularly ABO and Rh-Hr Blood-Group System could play roles in the risk and different features of cancers. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the potential of ABO and Rh blood groups as risk factors for breast cancer and cervix cancer. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study included 109 and 14 patients diagnosed with breast cancer and cervix cancer, respectively with known ABO and Rh blood types, between 2018 and 2020 in Khuzestan province, Iran. For compression of ABO blood groups distribution between the cancer patients group and the healthy population, we used data from a large-scale study that report the distribution of ABO blood groups in 29,922 blood donors in Khuzestan province. Results: Based on obtained results the most frequent blood group is O followed by B, A, and AB in breast cancer and followed by A, B, and AB in cervix cancer. Results showed no significant association between ABO and Rh and the risk of breast and cervix cancer. Moreover, there is no relationship between blood types and clinic pathological features of breast cancer. Conclusion: Based on our data, ABO and in this regard, previous studies suggest that blood types particularly ABO and Rh-Hr Blood-Group System could play roles in the risk and different features of cancers. To determine the association between the ABO blood group and preeclampsia. This is a case-control study that included patients with (n = 253) and without (n = 457) preeclampsia/eclampsia in Northeastern Mexico. Data were obtained from electronic medical records. Binary multiple logistic regression analysis was used for analyzing the association between the ABO blood group and preeclampsia according to parity status while adjusting for potential confounders. Blood groups A, B, and AB showed adjusted odds ratios of 0.6 (95%CI 0.3-1.0), 1.1 (95%CI 0.6-2.2), and 0.3 (95%CI 0.1-1.1) in multiparous women, respectively. Purpose:Purpose: Although multiple mechanisms associated with Peyronie’s disease (PD) have been proposed, details regarding etio-logic factors, especially genetic, remain unclear. We examined the relationship of the ABO blood type system, known as a genetic factor associated with susceptibility to a number of diseases, with PD in Japanese males. Materials and Methods:Materials and Methods: We compared 202 Japanese PD patients treated with surgery at our hospital between March 2004 and December 2019 with 846 randomly selected non-PD male patients who underwent urological surgery during the same period regarding distribution of ABO blood types. Background: Coronavirus (COVID-19) represents a global public health crisis that is causing significant deaths and affecting health systems around the world. There are several risk factors for the severity of infection, complications and mortality of COVID-19. One of them is blood group. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between blood group and rate of covid 19 disease. Methods: A cross sectional study was performed on 130 patients over 18 years of age admitted in ICU of Shohada Tajrish Hospital between August 2020 and April 2021.The positive COVID-19 diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Blood groups were determined and then, we monitored and followed up the patients' outcome during staying in ICU, the need for intubation, recovery and death. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common musculoskeletal disorder of childhood development. The genetic architecture of AIS is complex, and the great majority of risk factors are undiscovered. To identify new AIS susceptibility loci, we conducted the first genome-wide meta-analysis of AIS genome-wide association studies, including 7956 cases and 88 459 controls from 3 ancestral groups. Three novel loci that surpassed genome-wide significance were uncovered in intragenic regions of the CDH13 (P-value_rs4513093 = 1.7E-15), ABO (P-value_ rs687621 = 7.3E-10) and SOX6 (P-value_rs1455114 = 2.98E-08) genes. Restricting the analysis to females improved the associations at multiple loci, most notably with variants within CDH13 despite the reduction in sample size. Genome-wide gene-functional enrichment analysis identified significant perturbation of pathways involving cartilage and connective tissue development. Expression of both SOX6 and CDH13 was detected in cartilage chondrocytes and chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing experiments in that tissue revealed multiple HeK27ac-positive peaks overlapping associated loci. Our results further define the genetic architecture of AIS and highlight the importance of vertebral cartilage development in its pathogenesis.

Homologous glycosyltransferases GTA and GTB perform the final step in human ABO(H) blood group A and B antigen synthesis by transferring the sugar moiety from donor UDP-GalNAc/UDP-Gal to the terminal H antigen disaccharide acceptor. Like other GT-A fold family 6 glycosyltransferases, GTA and GTB undergo major conformational changes in two mobile regions, the C-terminal tail and internal loop, to achieve the closed, catalytic state. These changes are known to establish a salt bridge network among conserved active site residues Arg188, Asp211 and Asp302, which move to accommodate a series of discrete donor conformations while promoting loop ordering and formation of the closed enzyme state. However, the individual significance of these residues in linking these processes remains unclear. Here, we report the kinetics and high-resolution structures of GTA/GTB mutants of residues 188 and 302. The structural data support a conserved salt bridge network critical to mobile polypeptide loop organization and stabilization of the catalytically competent donor conformation. Consistent with the X-ray crystal structures, the kinetic data suggest that disruption of this salt bridge network has a destabilizing effect on the transition state, emphasizing the importance of Arg188 and Asp302 in the glycosyltransfer reaction mechanism. The salt bridge network observed in GTA/GTB structures during substrate binding appears to be conserved not only among other Carbohydrate Active EnZyme family 6 glycosyltransferases but also within both retaining and inverting GT-A fold glycosyltransferases. Our findings augment recently published crystal structures, which have identified a correlation between donor substrate conformational changes and mobile loop ordering.

Introduction: COVID 19 pandemic caused by SARS-COV2 virus has taken a toll all over the world. The susceptibility of various diseases like Helicobacter Pylori, Hepatitis B virus and Norwalk Virus and even SARS Corona Virus 1 have been associated with ABO blood groups. However, very limited data is available regarding the COVID 19 susceptibility and ABO blood groups. Methods: In the present report we investigated 500 admitted patients who were RTPCR positive for corona virus. Significant Tests were applied to study association of blood groups vis a vis disease severity, ICU admissions and assisted ventilation. Results: We found out that Type A blood group is more susceptible to severe COVID 19 infection, even though maximum patients were of type B blood group. We also found that type A blood group needed more ICU admission and assisted ventilation then non type A groups and difference was statistically significant. Conclusion: Patients with type A blood group COVID 19 patients with type A blood group might require more vigilant surveillance and aggressive treatment measures. Further studies are required to validate the disease susceptibility.

Background & Objective: Biological markers for the prediction of acquiring Covid-19 risk are deficient and there is a dire need of immediate research data. The objective of the study was to predict the link of ABO blood group types along with Rh factor distribution with the severity of Covid-19. Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional survey conducted in medicine department of Pakistan Ordnance Factory Hospital, Wah Cantt Pakistan, from August 2020 to December 2020 after approval of IRB. Participants tested positive for presence of Covid-19 infection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were included in the study. Covid-19 infection severity was measured through mild, moderate and severe disease categories and analyzed. ABO blood group and Rh subgroups data for all the Covid-19 infected patients were obtained from the laboratory section of the hospital and analyzed. Data was entered in SPSS v 26 and analyzed. Cox regression model was used to find out the severity of Covid-19. Results: Total 248 patients were included; 75% patients were male and 25% were females. The mean age of the patients was 52.77±15.58 years. A very significant association was found between ABO blood group types, Rh factor antigen and severity of Covid-19 (p=0.001). When stratified ABO, Rh antigen blood group with health status of all patients there was a very significant association between them (p=0.013). An insignificant association between male and female odds ratio of ABO blood group types but blood group B, Rh positive antigen was more susceptible in Covid-19 positive patients. Conclusion: There is a link between ABO blood group types along with Rh factor antigen (B+ and O+) with the severity of Covid-19 positive patients. ABO blood group types and Rh factor can be used as a potential marker/tool to predict the susceptibility of acquiring Covid-19 infection as well as for severity of the infection. Background and Objectives ABO-incompatible allo-HSCT leads to complications like pure red cell aplasia (PRCA), which involves 7-16% of ABO-incompatible recipients. In this condition, albeit the development of other hematopoietic lineages in the bone marrow engraftment is successful, erythroid precursors are missing; thus, patients may require blood transfusions because of severe anemia. An extensive variety of treatment strategies has been introduced for treating PRCA patients. This study reviewed the various PRCA treatments following allo-HSCT. Materials and Methods In this Review study, keywords including Pure Red-Cell Aplasia, Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, and ABO Blood-Group System were searched in PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Sixty-four articles were reviewed, and related data were extracted. Results There are three main approaches for treating PRCA: erythropoiesis with erythropoietin, reducing isoagglutinin levels, and immunomodulatory therapies/graft versus plasma cell effect. Conclusions Monoclonal antibody drugs targeting plasma cells have shown unprecedented results. Overall, PRCA management ways incorporate: individual patients’ evaluation in order to select the proper treatment management for each case, a thorough monitoring approach from the first day of hospitalization, and predicting the possibility of PRCA as indicated by blood group antibodies’ levels. Objectives: This research aims to explore the correlation between ABO blood groups and neoplasms in the head and neck region, specifically investigating the susceptibility of different blood groups to tumours., Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis., Data Sources: CNKI, WANFANG DATA, PubMed, Web of Science and Embase databases were systematically searched from inception to January 2024., Eligibility Criteria: All studies of ABO blood type and head and neck tumours will be included in this study., Data Extraction and Synthesis: A systematic literature review was performed using digital platforms on CNKI, WANFANG DATA, PubMed, Web of Science and Embase databases, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for meta-analysis. Two authors independently extracted the data and assessed the quality of included studies. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Comparisons were made between blood types A, B, AB and their combined group versus O, along with subgroup analyses. Systematic analysis was performed by using Review Manager V.5.4 and Stata V.18 statistical software., Results: 30 articles were included, involving 737 506 subjects, among which 21 382 were patients with head and neck tumours. The overall analysis indicated a significant association between type AB blood (OR 0.762, 95% CI 0.637 to 0.910) and a reduced risk of head and neck tumours. In the Caucasoid race, type A blood is significantly linked to an elevated likelihood of head and neck tumours (OR 1.353, 95% CI 1.076 to 1.702), while in the Mongoloid race, type AB blood is significantly linked to a reduced likelihood of developing tumours in the head and neck area (OR= 0.732, 95% CI 0.588 to 0.910). No significant associations were found in the subgroup analysis by gender. Regarding different types of cancer, type A blood is significantly associated with an increased risk of salivary gland tumours (OR 1.338, 95% CI 1.075 to 1.665), and type AB blood is significantly linked to a lower likelihood of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (OR 0.590, 95% CI 0.429 to 0.812)., Conclusion: A correlation exists between ABO blood groups and tumours in the head and neck region. Objectives: Inflammatory endothelial activation is a prominent feature of vascular involvement in Behçet's disease (BD), which is usually accompanied by a thrombotic tendency. Recent studies suggest an association between ABO blood groups and thrombotic vascular disease in those carrying non-O (A, B, and AB) groups. This study aimed to analyse the contribution of ABO blood groups to the vascular involvement in BD., Methods: In this retrospective study, BD patients with available ABO blood group data and meeting the ISG criteria were included in the study. The presence of vascular involvement, its clinical characteristics, and the data about other manifestations were recorded from the patient charts., Results: This study was conducted in 411 patients; 143 (34.8%) were carrying O and 268 (65.2%) were carrying non-O groups. The vascular involvement was significantly more frequent and the risk for overall vascular and venous events was up to 2-fold higher in the patients with non-O groups. After adjustments for age, sex, and comorbidities, the risk for arterial disease was also found to be increased in association with non-O groups. ABO blood groups were shown to be independent risk factors for vascular BD by multiple regression models based on known predisposing factors. Compared with other non-O blood groups, the patients carrying blood group B had a higher risk for vascular events., Conclusions: The results of this preliminary study show the potential contribution of ABO blood groups to the vascular-BD phenotype and suggest an increased risk for vascular BD in association with non-O blood groups.

Background: Balanced plasma/red blood cell transfusions have shown survival benefit in emergency scenarios. To improve plasma availability, we implemented 5-day group A thawed plasma at our pediatric hospital in February 2021., Study Design and Methods: We maintain thawed group A plasma units (5-day shelf-life) ready for immediate issue in the blood bank (since February 2021) and trauma code room (since August 2022). Group A plasma (un-titered) is issued for patients with unknown blood type during emergencies. We retrospectively reviewed records and laboratory results of recipients to assess safety and identify possible adverse events related to incompatible plasma., Results: Between February 2021 and December 2023, 173 emergency plasma requests occurred for 161 patients. Ninety-one occurred with massive transfusion protocol activations. Thirty-six patients (22.4%) were blood group B or AB, and 23 received incompatible plasma (age 0-21.3 years, weight 0.74-149.8 kg, incompatible plasma dose 4.0-428.4 mL/kg). These patients did not have any differences in survival outcomes or hospital lengths of stay (LOS) compared with compatible plasma recipients, mirroring the adult experience. None experienced adverse events related to group A plasma. No transfusion reactions were reported. No increase in wastage/outdate occurred upon thawed plasma implementation (2020 versus 2021 to 2023, 7.73% [133/1721] vs. 8.58% [497/5792], p = .284)., Conclusions: We implemented 5-day group A thawed plasma. Units are rapidly available from the blood bank and trauma code room without increased wastage. Background: Some studies in both children and adults have shown a mortality benefit for the use of low titer group O whole blood (LTOWB) compared with component therapy for traumatic resuscitation. Although LTOWB is not widely available at pediatric trauma centers, its use is increasing. We hypothesized that in children who received whole blood after injury, the proportion of whole blood in relation to the total blood product resuscitation volume would impact survival., Methods: The trauma database from a single academic pediatric Level I trauma center was queried for pediatric (age <18 years) recipients of LTOWB after injury (years 2015-2022). Weight-based blood product (LTOWB, red blood cells, plasma, and platelet) transfusion volumes during the first 24 hours of admission were recorded. The ratio of LTOWB to total transfusion volume was calculated. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Multivariable logistic regression model adjusted for the following variables: age, sex, mechanism of injury, Injury Severity Score, shock index, and Glasgow Coma Scale score. Adjusted odds ratio representing the change in the odds of mortality by a 10% increase in the LTOWB/total transfusion volume ratio was reported., Results: There were 95 pediatric LTOWB recipients included in the analysis, with median (interquartile range [IQR]) age of 10 years (5-14 years), 58% male, median (IQR) Injury Severity Score of 26 (17-35), 25% penetrating mechanism. The median (IQR) volume of LTOWB transfused was 17 mL/kg (15-35 mL/kg). Low titer group O whole blood comprised a median (IQR) of 59% (33-100%) of the total blood product resuscitation. Among patients who received LTOWB, there was a 38% decrease in in-hospital mortality for each 10% increase in the proportion of WB within total transfusion volume ( p < 0.001) after adjusting for age, sex, mechanism of injury, Injury Severity Score, shock index, and Glasgow Coma Scale score., Conclusion: Increased proportions of LTOWB within the total blood product resuscitation was independently associated with survival in injured children. Background and Objectives: The storage temperature of immunohaematological reagents generally ranges from 2 to 8°C, and they should be utilised at room temperature. This study aimed to analyse the stability of immunohaematological reagents used in ABO and RhD typing., Methods: The evaluation encompassed the potency, specificity, and integrity of anti-A, anti-B, anti-D, RhD control sera, and A 1 and B red blood cells (RBC) reagents after long (8 h) and short (4 h) daily periods of exposure to room temperature (20-24°C), 5 days a week for 4 weeks. Additionally, the A 1 and B RBC reagents were exposed daily for 11 h and 30 min at room temperature, including 30 more minutes at room temperature with simultaneous homogenisation through equipment. For the control, an aliquot of each reagent was constantly stored at refrigeration temperature, while another was exposed to room temperature for 12 h daily. Tests conducted included reaction intensity, titration, and avidity for antisera, reaction intensity, free haemoglobin determination, and electrical conductivity for the RBC reagents., Results: The antisera maintained the reaction intensity. The titre and avidity of the antisera satisfied the minimum Brazilian requirements after different exposure periods. A higher free haemoglobin concentration was noted in the RBC reagents subjected to room temperature and simultaneous homogenisation, although this did not affect the potency and specificity. The electrical conductivity average of the RBC reagent remained consistent., Conclusion: The findings indicate that the immunohaematological reagents from a specific manufacturer are stable under the tested temperature, ensuring the quality of the results under these conditions., (© 2024 British Blood Transfusion Society.)

Background Aims: ABO incompatibility does not hinder bone marrow transplantation (BMT), but it has been associated with worse outcomes and additional adverse events. This study aimed to verify the impact of incompatible red blood cells (iRBCs) in allogeneic BMT and to determine a safe number of iRBCs to be infused., Methods: We compared ABO-incompatible (iABO) allogeneic BMT (n = 42) with ABO-compatible allogeneic BMT (n = 44) and evaluated the impact of the number of infused iRBCs on outcomes and adverse events., Results: The iABO patients demonstrated delayed time to transfusion independence at 30 days and 60 days, increased requirement for red blood cell (RBC) transfusion and greater hemolysis signals and incidence of pure red cell aplasia. Neutrophil/platelet engraftment, length of hospitalization post-transplant, platelet units required, graft-versus-host disease occurrence and overall survival were similar in both groups. Patients in the iABO group received 1.03 × 10 10 iRBCs/kg (range, 0.36-3.88). Infusion of iRBCs >1.0 × 10 10 /kg was related to graft failure or death before neutrophil engraftment or platelet engraftment or both as well as increased plasma requirement and increased creatinine. Our results also suggest that antibody titers impact the transplantation scenario., Conclusions: The iABO transplantation showed some unfavorable outcomes. It is important to monitor the value of iRBCs to be infused, considering the recipient antibody titers. We propose using the number of iRBCs (iRBCs/kg) as a dose parameter with regard to infused iRBCs. Purpose: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has been shown to have a lower incidence in patients with blood group O. It is currently uncertain if patients with group O have a better prognosis after pancreatectomy. This study assessed the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of PDAC patients who underwent upfront pancreatoduodenectomy based on ABO blood groups., Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed including patients from two university centers. All consecutive head PDAC patients who underwent upfront pancreatoduodenectomy from 2000 to 2016 were included. OS and DFS were compared between blood groups A, B, AB, and O using Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests., Results: A total of 438 patients were included (215 women, median age 67). Pre- and intraoperative details were comparable between all subgroups. Median OS did not differ between the four blood groups (A: 23 months, 95% CI 18-28; B: 32, 95% CI 20-44; AB: 37, 95% CI 18-56 and O: 26, 95% CI 20-32, p = 0.192). Median DFS were also similar (A: 19 months, 95% CI 15-23; B: 26, 95% CI 19-33; AB: 35, 95% CI 15-55 and O: 22, 95% CI 15-29, p = 0.441). There was no OS difference between O and non-O groups (median: 26 months, 95% CI 20-33 vs. 25 months, 95% CI 20-30, p = 0.773). On multivariable analysis blood groups were not prognostic of OS. Only lymph node involvement, tumor differentiation, and adjuvant chemotherapy were independent prognostic factors., Conclusion: OS and DFS were similar between all four blood groups after pancreatoduodenectomy. Objective: Here, we sought to report ABO and D antigen distribution in blood donors from Yogyakarta, Java Island, Indonesia. Phenotype data (ABO/D) from donors who donated blood between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2023, at the Yogyakarta Blood Donor Unit were extracted from the blood donor registry, and phenotype frequency was calculated subsequently., Results: In the 245,307 blood donors collected over six years, ABO phenotype frequency: O (frequency: 38.5%) > B (29.4%) > A (24.1%) > AB (8.0%). The D-positive phenotype was far more common (99.5%) than the D-negative phenotype (0.5%). The phenotypic pattern globally is similar to previous reports in Southeast Asia. The D antigen distribution is similar to world distribution as the most common blood group. For the first time in Indonesia, this distribution of ABO and D phenotype is reported in a large-scale study. Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. It can lead to various clinical reactions, ranging from no symptoms at all to noticeable skin lesions and severe itching within the same household. We aimed to investigate the potential role of blood groups in the emergence of disease symptoms by comparing the scabies patients with asymptomatic co-residents. This study comprised 102 patients infected with scabies from index cases and 111 asymptomatic co-residents. The index cases where symptoms first appeared were excluded. Among patients with scabies, 34 individuals (33.3%) had type A blood group, 12 (11.8%) had type B, 27 (26.5%) had type AB, and 29 (28.4%) had type O. Of these patients, 101 (99%) were Rh+, while 1 (1%) was Rh-. In asymptomatic contacts, 61 individuals (55%) had type A, 9 (8.1%) had type B, 1 (0.9%) had type AB, and 40 (36%) had type O blood group. Of these, 102 (91.9%) were Rh+, and 9 (8.1%) were Rh-. A significant difference was observed between the two groups concerning the frequency of ABO, Rh, and ABO*Rh blood groups (p < 0.05). The prevalence of B + and AB + blood groups was higher in scabies patients compared to asymptomatic contacts. The study results showed a significant association between the emergence of scabies symptoms with blood groups. Our results highlight the importance of more research into the roles of blood group antigens in normal skin epithelium and their involvement in the etiopathogenesis of scabies., (© 2024. Several diseases, including both noninfectious diseases and bacterial and viral diseases, are associated with the ABO and RH blood group systems. Previous studies have shown a link between blood type and the probability of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. In this study, we aimed to explore the correlation between deaths caused by COVID-19 and ABO and RhD blood types in Saudi Arabia. In this cross-sectional observational study, data from COVID-19 patients were collected from 2 major hospitals treating COVID-19 in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia, between March 2020 and November 2021. The association between ABO and RhD blood types and COVID-19 outcomes was investigated. A total of 2302 real-time polymerase chain reaction-confirmed COVID-19 patients were enrolled in this study; a chi-square test was used to determine the statistical significance of the data. Of the 2302 enrolled patients, 1008 (43.8%) had blood type O, 677 (29.41%) had blood type A, 502 (21.8%) had blood type B, and 115 (5%) had blood type AB. Of the patients, 2143 (93.1%) were RhD-positive. The O-positive blood type had the highest mortality rate among COVID-19-infected patients, whereas the AB-negative type had the lowest. However, statistical analysis revealed no significant correlation between blood type (ABO or RhD) and COVID-19-based susceptibility or mortality. Background and Objectives: Some blood operators routinely screen blood donations for high-titre (HT) anti-A/B to reduce the risk of a haemolytic transfusion reaction due to out-of-group plasma-rich components. We assessed donor factors associated with an increased likelihood of screening positive and compared routine data between England and Australia., Materials and Methods: Data were assessed from HT screening during 2018-2020 in Australia and 2018-2021 in England, totalling nearly 6 million blood donations. Screening was performed using a Beckman Coulter PK7300 analyser with a micro-titre plate saline direct agglutination test in both countries, although different reagent red cells were chosen. HT-positive was defined as testing positive at a titre of 128 or above., Results: The likelihood of a donor testing HT-positive was greater for females than males, declined with age and was dependent on the ABO group. However, the proportion of donors testing HT-positive was consistently higher in Australia than in England: overall, 14% of group O donations and 5% of group A donations in England tested HT-positive, compared with 51% and 22%, respectively in Australia. English data also showed that donors from Black, Asian or mixed ethnic backgrounds were more likely to test HT-positive than White donors., Conclusion: These data demonstrate that donor sex, age, ABO group and ethnicity affect the likelihood of testing HT-positive. Differences in testing methods likely had a significant impact on the proportion of donors testing as HT-positive or -negative rather than any differences in donor populations., (© 2024 The Author(s).
