Abstract At present, adhesives widely used in various industries are mainly synthesized from organic chemical raw materials, and research on replacing traditional chemical raw materials with renewable biomass resources to synthesize adhesives is urgently needed. Adhesives possessing colloidal properties are highly favored due to their distinctive self-assembly capability, and robust reinforcement effects. Here, using cellulose as the sole raw material and following a simple and inexpensive strategy, we prepare a high-performance all-cellulose colloidal adhesive that is resistant to boiling water. We achieve a dry-shear strength of 1.97 MPa with this adhesive and a bonding strength of 0.81 MPa after a cycle of boiling-drying-boiling. The curing mechanism of the adhesive are verified using molecular dynamics simulations. These all-cellulose colloidal adhesives demonstrate great potential to replace traditional adhesives in the near future.

Abstract Background Early detection and treatment are effective methods for the management of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which can be facilitated by the detection of tumor-specific OSCC biomarkers. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) are important therapeutic targets for OSCC. Multispectral fluorescence molecular imaging (FMI) can facilitate the detection of tumor multitarget expression with high sensitivity and safety. Hence, we developed Nimotuzumab-ICG and Atezolizumab-Cy5.5 imaging probes, in combination with multispectral FMI, to sensitively and noninvasively identify EGFR and PD-L1 expression for the detection and comprehensive treatment of OSCC. Methods The expression of EGFR and PD-L1 was analyzed using bioinformatics data sources and specimens. Nimotuzumab-ICG and Atezolizumab-Cy5.5 imaging probes were developed and tested on preclinical OSCC cell line and orthotopic OSCC mouse model, fresh OSCC patients’ biopsied samples, and further clinical mouthwash trials were conducted in OSCC patients. Results EGFR and PD-L1 were specifically expressed in human OSCC cell lines and tumor xenografts. Nimotuzumab-ICG and Atezolizumab-Cy5.5 imaging probes can specifically target to the tumor sites in an in situ human OSCC mouse model with good safety. The detection sensitivity and specificity of Nimotuzumab-ICG in patients were 96.4% and 100%, and 95.2% and 88.9% for Atezolizumab-Cy5.5. Conclusions EGFR and PD-L1 are highly expressed in OSCC, the combination of which is important for a precise prognosis of OSCC. EGFR and PD-L1 expression can be sensitively detected using the newly synthesized multispectral fluorescence imaging probes Nimotuzumab-ICG and Atezolizumab-Cy5.5, which can facilitate the sensitive and specific detection of OSCC and improve treatment outcomes. Objective The management of the infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate a novel IPFP preservation technique—“the medially pedicled IPFP flap”—for reducing postoperative pain, wound complications, and improving functional recovery after TKA. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on TKA cases at our institution from 2018 to 2021, including those with IPFP preservation (medially pedicled flap) versus IPFP complete resection. Patient demographics, perioperative parameters (blood loss, operative time, length of hospital stay, visual analogue scale [VAS] score, white cell count [WBC], C‐reactive protein [CRP], erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ESR], and wound oozing), and postoperative follow‐up data (VAS, Knee Society [KSS], or Knee Society functional assessment [KSFA] scores) were compared between groups. Independent sample t‐tests were used to compare continuous data and chi‐squared tests were used to compare categorical data between groups. Results Six hundred thirty patients were included, with 278 in the medial pedicled IPFP flap group (preservation group) and 352 in the IPFP resection group (resection group). Abstract Objectives To compare the iatrogenic radial nerve injury (iRNI) rate of different implant (plate vs. intramedullary nail) and surgical approaches during humeral shaft fracture surgery. Methods The online PubMed database was used to search for articles describing iRNI after humeral fracture with a publication date from Jan 2000 to October 2023. The following types of articles were selected: (1) case series associating with adult humeral shaft fracture, preoperative radial nerve continuity, non-pathological fracture and non-periprosthetic fracture; (2) involving humeral shaft (OTA/AO 12) fractures. Articles where we were unable to judge surgical approach or fracture pattern (OTA/AO 12) were excluded. The data were analyzed by SPSS 27.0 and Chi-square test was performed to identify incidence of iRNI associated with different implant and surgical approaches. Results Fifty-four articles with 5063 cases were included, with 3510 cases of the plate, 830 cases of intramedullary nail and 723 cases of uncertain internal fixation. The incidences of iRNI with plate and intramedullary nail were 5.95% (209/3510) and 2.77% (23/830) (p 0.05). The iRNI rates were 2.87% (21/732) for anterograde intramedullary nail and 2.04% (2/98) for retrograde intramedullary nail (p > 0.05). In humeral bone nonunion surgery, the rate of iRNI was 15.00% (9/60) for anterolateral approach, 16.7% (2/12) for lateral approach and 18.2% (6/33) for posterior approach (p > 0.05). Conclusion Intramedullary nailing is the preferred method of internal fixation for humeral shaft fractures that has the lowest rate of iRNI. Compared with anterolateral and posterior approaches, the lateral surgical approach had a higher incidence of iRNI. The rate of iRNI in MIPO was lower than that in open reduction and internal fixation. Level of evidence Level IV.

In order to solve the problem that a large amount of gas emitted from the newly excavated coal wall in the driving roadway after the sudden wind shutdown causes the gas volume fraction to rise rapidly and thus endangers the safety of the operators, this paper proposes a mathematical model for the space-time evolution of the gas volume fraction in the driving roadway during the wind shutdown, and uses the multi-physical field coupling software to simulate and study the space-time evolution law of the gas emission, gas volume fraction, and oxygen volume fraction in the driving roadway after the sudden wind shutdown accident. The results show that the gas diffusion in the roadway after the ventilation is low Reynolds number laminar flow; the comparison and analysis trend of theoretical calculation data is consistent with the measured data of 2207 heading roadway in Taiyue Coal Mine; the escape speed of the personnel involved in the danger must be greater than 3.91 m/min, the best evacuation time is 7-25 min, and the minimum time is 30 min before the oxygen volume fraction in the roadway falls to the low oxygen level. The research results provide a theoretical basis for formulating the emergency response plan for coal mine gas safety accidents and scientifically arranging the emergency evacuation of operators.

Objective The main objective of this study was to determine available energy and nutritional digestibility of extruded cereals and the effect of extrusion on the nutritional value of feed ingredients, aiming to provide scientific basis for efficient application of extrusion in the diets of growing pigs. Methods In Exp. 1, 48 crossbred growing pigs (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with an initial body weight (BW) of 34.6±2.2 kg were selected and fed with eight diets (non-extrusion or extrusion) to determine the digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME), and nutrients digestibility. Eight diets included extruded grains (barley, wheat, sorghum, or broken rice), while four had unprocessed grains. In Exp. 2, 9 diets were formulated including 4 cereals with extrusion or non-extrusion and a N-free diet. In addition, 9 growing pigs (BW = 22.3±2.8 kg) were fitted with T-cannula in the distal ileum and arranged in a 9×6 Youden square design. Results Results show that apparent total tract digestibility of gross energy, dry matter, organic meal, ether extract, neutral and acid detergent fiber was not affected by the extrusion process and there was no interaction between cereal type and extrusion treatment on DE, ME. Abstract Background The Longshi Scale is a pictorial assessment tool for evaluating activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with stroke. The paper-based version presents challenges; thus, the WeChat version was created to enhance accessibility. Herein, we aimed to validate the inter-rater and test–retest reliabilities of the WeChat version of the Longshi Scale and explore its potential clinical applications. Methods We recruited 115 patients with stroke in the study. The ADL results of each patient were assessed using both the WeChat and paper-based version of the Longshi Scale; each evaluation was conducted by 28 health professionals and 115 caregivers separately. To explore the test–retest reliability of the WeChat version, 22 patients were randomly selected and re-evaluated by health professionals using the WeChat version. All evaluation criteria were recorded, and all evaluators were surveyed to indicate their preference between the two versions. Results Consistency between WeChat and the paper-based Longshi Scale was high for ADL scores by health professionals (ICC2,1 = 0.803–0.988) and caregivers (ICC2,1 = 0.845–0.983), as well as for degrees of disability (κw = 0.870 by professionals; κw = 0.800 by caregivers). Bland–Altman analysis showed no significant discrepancies. The WeChat version exhibited good test–retest reliability (κw = 0.880). The WeChat version showed similar inter-rater reliability in terms of the ADL score evaluated using the paper-based version (ICC2,1 = 0.781–0.941). Neurological injury, as a major pathogenic mechanism in depression, holds significant importance in the research and development of antidepressant drugs. Hemerocallis citrina Baroni (H. citrina), referred to as “Forgetting Sadness Grass,” has been confirmed to possess remarkable neuroprotective effects. Studies have identified that the total phenolics in H. citrina Baroni leaves (HLTP) consist of flavonoids and phenolic acids and numerous studies have substantiated the neuroprotective effects of them. Based on this, we propose that HLTP may possess neuroprotective properties. To confirm this hypothesis, we initially employed network pharmacology techniques to predict potential targets for the neuroprotective effects of HLTP based on the Swiss Target Prediction database. GO and KEGG analyses were conducted to predict potential pathways, and a component-target-pathway network was constructed. Molecular docking experiments were then performed to analyze the binding abilities of the selected active components with the main targets. Furthermore, we validated the neuroprotective effects of HLTP and key targets selected through network pharmacology using a corticosterone-induced PC12 neuronal cell damage model. Network pharmacology research has identified that in the HLTP, Quercetin, Rutin, Apigenin, and Isoquercitrin are potential active components that may exert neuroprotective effects by modulating key targets such as AKT1, TNF, TP53, and CASP3 through crucial pathways including PI3K/AKT and apoptosis. Molecular docking revealed that 4-O-Caffeoylquinic acid, 5-O-Caffeoylshikimic acid, 4-p-Coumaroylquinic acid, and 5-O-Feruloylquinic acid exhibit low binding energies with key targets. Particularly, 4-O-Caffeoylquinic acid forms stable binding through hydrogen bonding with residues such as LYS389, GLU49, GLN47, LYS30, ASP44, and GLU40 in AKT1. PC12 cells were stimulated with 200 μmol/L Corticosterone (Cort) for 24 h, and then treated with 50, 100 and 200 μg/mL of HLTP for 24 h. The cell viability of damaged cells were significantly increased in a dose-dependent manner by 9.50%, 10.42% and 21.25%, respectively (P < 0.01). Western blot analysis confirmed that HLTP significantly (P < 0.01) increased the protein expression of PI3K and AKT by 15.24%, 30.44%, 41.03%, and 21.78%, 43.63%, 12.86%, respectively. In addition, through biochemical method, flow cytometry and WB analysis, we found that different concentrations of HLTP can all improve cell damage by reducing ROS, MDA, Ca2+, Cyt-C, Caspase-3, TNF-α and IL-1β, and increasing SOD, CAT, MMP, Bcl-2/Bax and IL-10. In particular, the HLTP at 200 μg/mL, compared with the Model group, decreased by 140.2%, 54.66%, 51.34%, 65.26%, 40.32%, 63.87%, and 55.38%, and increased by 39.65%, 35.45%, 38.38%, 28.54%, and 39.98%, respectively. Through the above experiments, we verified that HLTP may exert neuroprotective effects by mediating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway to counteract oxidative stress damage, improve mitochondrial dysfunction, and alleviate inflammatory injury.

The discovery of regulatory cell death processes has driven innovation in cardiovascular disease (CVD) therapeutic strategies. Over the past decade, ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death driven by excessive lipid peroxidation, has been shown to drive the development of multiple CVDs. This review provides insights into the evolution of the concept of ferroptosis, the similarities and differences with traditional modes of programmed cell death (e.g., apoptosis, autophagy, and necrosis), as well as the core regulatory mechanisms of ferroptosis (including cystine/glutamate transporter blockade, imbalance of iron metabolism, and lipid peroxidation). In addition, it provides not only a detailed review of the role of ferroptosis and its therapeutic potential in widely studied CVDs such as coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, myocardial infarction, myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, and aortic aneurysm but also an overview of the phenomenon and therapeutic perspectives of ferroptosis in lesser-addressed CVDs such as cardiac valvulopathy, pulmonary hypertension, and sickle cell disease. This article aims to integrate this knowledge to provide a comprehensive view of ferroptosis in a wide range of CVDs and to drive innovation and progress in therapeutic strategies in this field.

Abstract The potential increase/decrease in energy consumption of traffic operation modes is a hot topic in the studies of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), but there are few theoretical studies on the fuel consumption of human driving vehicles (HDVs) and CAV mixed platoon as a result of limited data. Based on the power distribution of light‐duty vehicles, this study developed a fuel consumption model for HDV and CAV mixed platoons by theoretical hypothesis considering the oscillation along with the platoon. Firstly, a vehicle‐specific power (VSP) distribution conforming to normal distribution is constructed with hypothesis‐based VSP standard deviation and constant VSP average value at each speed bin under different platoon arrangement conditions. Then, the fuel factors (mL/km) are calculated by weighted fuel rate (mL/s) according to the VSP distribution. Finally, a library of fuel consumption values for multiple penetration rates, platoon intensities, and speeds was established. In the case, at a speed of 30 km/h, the fuel consumption in the CAV group was reduced by 0.8–5%, 1.9–12.5%, 8.6–12%, and 12.4%, respectively, at the penetration rate of 20%, 50%, 80%, and 100%, compared to the HDV group. The fuel consumption reduction effect of CAV was negatively correlated with the speed.

Abstract Background Endoscopic thyroidectomy has been preliminarily proven effective and safe for thyroid diseases. The cosmetic outcomes and life quality are critical contents of postoperative assessment. This review will primarily focus on the assessment methods and results related to cosmetic outcomes, sensory alteration of surgical area, and quality of life following endoscopic thyroidectomy. Methods A comprehensive search of published articles within the last decade was conducted using the terms “endoscopic/robotic thyroidectomy,” “patient satisfaction scores,” “questionnaire,” “quality of life,” and “cosmetic” in PubMed. Results Assessment methods for postoperative cosmetic satisfaction and sensory alterations encompassed verbal/visual analog scales, scar evaluations, Semmes–Weinstein monofilament tests, and more. The evaluation of postoperative quality of life in endoscopic thyroidectomy involved tools such as SF-36, SF-12, thyroid-specific questionnaires, thyroid cancer-specific quality of life questionnaires (THYCA-QOL), as well as assessments related to voice and swallow function. The cosmetic results of endoscopic thyroidectomy generally surpassed those of open thyroidectomy, while the quality of life in endoscopic procedures was either superior or equivalent to that in open thyroidectomy, especially with respect to general health, role emotion, and vitality. Conclusions Assessments of cosmetic outcomes and sensory alterations following endoscopic thyroidectomy predominantly relied on patients’ subjective feelings. The objective and subjective perspectives of scar assessments remain underutilized. In addition, postoperative laryngoscopy and voice function assessments in endoscopic thyroidectomy procedures require more attention.

Abstract Background Optimized New Shengmai Powder (ONSMP) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula with significant anti-heart failure and myocardial fibrosis effects, but the specific molecular biological mechanisms are not fully understood. Methods In this study, we first used network pharmacology to analyze the ONSMP's active ingredients, core signaling pathways, and core targets. Second, calculate the affinity and binding modes of the ONSMP components to the core targets using molecular docking. Finally, the heart failure rat model was established by ligating the left anterior descending branch of the coronary artery and assessing the effect of ONSMP on myocardial fibrosis in heart failure using echocardiography, cardiac organ coefficients, heart failure markers, and pathological sections after 4 weeks of drug intervention. The cAMP level in rat myocardium was determined using Elisa, the α-SMA and FSP-1 positive expression determined by immunohistochemistry, and the protein and mRNA levels of the cAMP/Rap1A signaling pathway were detected by Western Blotting and quantitative real-time PCR, respectively. Results The result shows that the possible mechanism of ONSMP in reducing myocardial fibrosis also includes the use of 12 active ingredients such as baicalin, vitamin D, resveratrol, tanshinone IIA, emodin, 15,16-dihydrotanshinone-i to regulate β1-AR, AC6, EPAC1, Rap1 A, STAT3, and CCND1 on the cAMP/Rap1A signaling pathway, thereby inhibiting the proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts and reduce the excessive secretion of collagen, effectively improve cardiac function and ventricular remodeling in heart failure rats. Conclusion This research shows that ONSMP can inhibit myocardial fibrosis and delay heart failure through the cAMP/Rap1A signaling pathway.

In this work, we present a reconfigurable data glove design to capture different modes of human hand–object interactions, which are critical in training embodied artificial intelligence (AI) agents for fine manipulation tasks. To achieve various downstream tasks with distinct features, our reconfigurable data glove operates in three modes sharing a unified backbone design that reconstructs hand gestures in real time. In the tactile-sensing mode, the glove system aggregates manipulation force via customized force sensors made from a soft and thin piezoresistive material; this design minimizes interference during complex hand movements. The virtual reality (VR) mode enables real-time interaction in a physically plausible fashion: A caging-based approach is devised to determine stable grasps by detecting collision events. Leveraging a state-of-the-art finite element method, the simulation mode collects data on fine-grained four-dimensional manipulation events comprising hand and object motions in three-dimensional space and how the object’s physical properties (e.g., stress and energy) change in accordance with manipulation over time. Notably, the glove system presented here is the first to use high-fidelity simulation to investigate the unobservable physical and causal factors behind manipulation actions. In a series of experiments, we characterize our data glove in terms of individual sensors and the overall system. More specifically, we evaluate the system’s three modes by ① recording hand gestures and associated forces, ② improving manipulation fluency in VR, and ③ producing realistic simulation effects of various tool uses, respectively. Based on these three modes, our reconfigurable data glove collects and reconstructs fine-grained human grasp data in both physical and virtual environments, thereby opening up new avenues for the learning of manipulation skills for embodied AI agents.

ABSTRACTFollowing the national dynamic zero-COVID strategy adjustment, the utilization of broad-spectrum nasal neutralizing antibodies may offer an alternative approach to controlling the outbreak of Omicron variants between late 2022 and early 2023 in China. This study involved an investigator-initiated trial (IIT) to assess the pharmacokinetic, safety and efficacy of the F61 nasal spray. A total of 2,008 participants were randomly assigned to receive F61 nasal spray (24 mg/0.8 mL/dose) or normal saline (0.8 mL/dose) and 1336 completed the follow-up in the IIT. Minimal absorption of F61 antibody into the bloodstream was detected in individuals receiving F61 nasal spray for seven consecutive days. No treatment-emergent adverse reactions of grade 3 severity or higher were reported. In the one-dose cohort, the 7-day cumulative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was 79.0% in the F61 group and 82.6% in the placebo group, whereas, in the multiple-dose (once daily for 7 consecutive days) cohort, the rates were 6.55% in the F61 group and 23.83% in the placebo group. The laboratory-confirmed efficacy of F61 was 3.78% (−3.74%–10.75%) in the one-dose cohort and 72.19% (57.33%–81.87%) in the multiple-dose cohort. In the real-world study, 60,225 volunteers in four different regions were administered the F61 nasal spray based on the subject's wishes, over 90% efficacy rate was observed against different Omicron variants. The F61 nasal spray, with its favourable safety profile, could be a promising prophylactic monoclonal antibody against SARS-CoV-2 VOCs.

Abstract Forest plantations most likely promote exotic plant invasion. Using an in situ monitoring method, this study investigated the traits correlated with growth and reproduction of an understory invader, Phytolacca americana L., and ecological factors including understory irradiance, soil stoichiometry and microbial patterns associated with these traits in different exotic plantations of Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Pinus thunbergii Parl. at Mount Lao, Qingdao, China. We found that the traits of P. americana underneath the R. pseudoacacia stand might be situated at the fast side of the trait economic spectrum. The R. pseudoacacia stand appeared to “nurse” P. americana. Furthermore, we intended to explain the nurse effects of R. pseudoacacia stands by examining their ecological factors. First, the R. pseudoacacia stand created understory light attenuation, which matched the sciophilous feature of P. americana. Second, the soil beneath the R. pseudoacacia stand might benefit P. americana more since the soil has greater resource availability. Third, a higher microbial diversity was found in the soil derived from P. americana underneath the R. pseudoacacia stand. A greater abundance of plant pathogens was detected in the soil derived from P. americana in the R. pseudoacacia stand, while more abundant mycorrhizal fungi were detected in the P. thunbergii stand. We speculate that plant pathogens can defend P. americana from aggression from other understory competitors. The mycorrhizal fungi in the P. thunbergii stand might benefit P. americana while simultaneously benefiting other understory plants. Intensive competition from other plants might interfere with P. americana. The potential relationships between plant performance and ecological factors may explain the invasion mechanism of P. americana. The present study provides a novel insight on the facilitative effects of exotic tree plantation on an exotic herb through the modification of soil biota, with implications for the biocontrol of invasive species and forest management and conservation.

A tremendous amount of research has witnessed the exploration of two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic ferromagnetism and diverse physical properties. However, the low Curie temperature and deficient magnetic anisotropy hinder their practical applications in nanoscale spintronics. Based on first-principles calculations, we propose a new family of 2D ternary transition metal tellurides, CrX2Te4 (X = Al, Ga, and In), with both structural and magnetic stabilities at room temperature. Our calculations demonstrate that the 2D CrX2Te4 crystal exhibits the intrinsic 100% spin-polarized half-metallic feature with spin-up metallic and spin-down semi-conducting properties. With the remarkable magnetic moment of 4 μB per Cr atom, both 2D CrAl2Te4 and CrGa2Te4 crystals perform robust ferromagnetism with the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy, while the 2D CrIn2Te4 crystal prefers the in-plane easy magnetization axis. The Monte Carlo simulation based on the 2D Heisenberg model shows that the critical Curie temperatures of the 2D CrAl2Te4, CrGa2Te4, and CrIn2Te4 crystals could reach 466, 431, and 536 K, respectively. Moreover, the magnetic exchange strength and magnetic anisotropy could be further enhanced by the in-plane biaxial strain. The novel electronic and magnetic features promote 2D CrX2Te4 (X = Al, Ga, and In) crystals as a new family of two-dimensional intrinsic ferromagnetic materials for next-generation advanced spintronics.

Myocardial fibrosis is a significant pathological basis of heart failure. Overactivation of the ERK1/2 and JNK1/2 signaling pathways of MAPK family members synergistically promotes the proliferation of myocardial fibroblasts and accelerates the development of myocardial fibrosis. In addition to some small molecule inhibitors and Western drugs, many Chinese medicines can also inhibit the activity of ERK1/2 and JNK1/2, thus slowing down the development of myocardial fibrosis, and are generally safe and effective. However, the specific biological mechanisms of ERK1/2 and JNK1/2 signaling pathways in myocardial fibrosis still need to be fully understood, and there is no systematic review of existing drugs and methods to inhibit them from improving myocardial fibrosis. This study aims to summarize the roles and cross-linking mechanisms of ERK1/2 and JNK1/2 signaling pathways in myocardial fibrosis and to systematically sort out the small-molecule inhibitors, Western drugs, traditional Chinese medicines, and non-pharmacological therapies that inhibit ERK1/2 and JNK1/2 to alleviate myocardial fibrosis. In the future, we hope to conduct more in-depth research from the perspective of precision-targeted therapy, using this as a basis for developing new drugs that provide new perspectives on the prevention and treatment of heart failure.

Doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC) adversely impacts patients' long-term health and quality of life. Its underlying mechanism is complex, involving regulatory cell death mechanisms, such as ferroptosis and autophagy. Moreover, it is a challenge faced by patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation. Endurance exercise (E-Exe) preconditioning effectively counters DIC injury, potentially through the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway. However, detailed studies on this process's mechanisms are scarce. Here, E-Exe preconditioning and DIC models were established using mice and primary cultured adult mouse cardiomyocytes (PAMCs). Akin to ferrostatin-1 (ferroptosis inhibitor), rapamycin (autophagic inducer), and MitoTEMPO (mitochondrial free-radical scavenger), E-Exe preconditioning effectively alleviated Fe2+ accumulation and oxidative stress and improved energy metabolism and mitochondrial dysfunction in DIC injury, as demonstrated by multifunctional, enzymatic, and morphological indices. However, erastin (ferroptosis inducer), 3-methyladenine (autophagic inhibitor), adenovirus-mediated AMPKα2 downregulation, and AMPKα2 inhibition by compound C significantly diminished these effects, both in vivo and in vitro. The results suggest a non-traditional mechanism where E-Exe preconditioning, under mild mitochondrial reactive oxygen species generation, upregulates and phosphorylates AMPKα2, thereby enhancing mitochondrial complex I activity, activating adaptive autophagy, and improving myocardial tolerance to DIC injury. Overall, this study highlighted the pivotal role of mitochondria in myocardial DIC-induced ferroptosis and shows how E-Exe preconditioning activated AMPKα2 against myocardial DIC injury. This suggests that E-Exe preconditioning could be a viable strategy for patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation.

Abstract Permeability enhancement of low permeability coal seams is a key tool in coal mine gas extraction and utilization. Numerical investigations are used to analyze the geometric parameters of the drilled gas cavity and the effect of initial pressure on explosion parameters to explore the potential of original gas blasting in enhancing crack penetration in coal seams. On the basis of these analyses, the changes in characteristic parameters of the coal body under blasting pressure are examined. The results show that the maximum explosion pressure tends to be close to the theoretical explosion maximum when the L/Φ is 1.67–2.5, and the mechanical effect of the explosion pressure and surge velocity on the wall reaches the optimum in the experimental group when the L/Φ is 1.67. The initial pressure and the maximum explosion pressure demonstrate a linear positive correlation, and increasing the former can effectively enhance the force applied to the hole wall. During the gas explosion pressurization stage, the cracking range of coal under pressure is 0.05 m, but the duration of peak pressure can extend the range of cracking. The combined effect of the stress and pressure fields causes elastic energy storage in the coal body to fail in the radial region of the hole wall, but regains elastic energy storage as the pressure increases. The effect of fracturing on the radial coal seam permeability of the borehole wall before and after the fracturing effect is expanded by 19.6 times, proving that in situ gas explosion in boreholes can effectively improve the gas seepage characteristics of coal seams and increase the gas recovery rate. The simulations indicate that the application of in situ gas explosion fracturing and permeation technology is limited by the increase in maximum explosion pressure and the cumulative effect time of the peak pressure. This provides a theoretical basis for understanding the constraints of gas explosion fracturing and permeation technology.

The traditional manual sampling method for detecting stored grain insect pests is labor-intensive and time-consuming, often yielding non-representative samples. However, to achieve more accurate monitoring, it is necessary to understand the distribution patterns of different insect pests within grain silo and their correlation with monitoring and sampling data. This study aimed to assess the population density and distribution of Sitophilus oryzae (rice weevil) in bulk wheat grain to predict insect dynamics effectively. Utilizing a probe trap in a wheat silo, adult insects were tracked across different population densities. The traps recorded captured pests, alongside temperature and humidity data. The correlation analysis revealed that rice weevils were active throughout the silo but less prevalent at the bottom, with the highest distribution near the upper surface. Temperature and humidity significantly influenced their activity, particularly within the 22 °C to 32 °C range. Higher population densities correlated with increased relative humidity, impacting weevil activity. Trapping data aligned with overall population density changes in the silo. This study will provide an accurate assessment of the population density of adult rice weevils in grain silos based on temperature changes in the upper part of the grain silo.

Runoff and sediment (RAS) are important indicators of soil erosion in a watershed, playing a significant role in the migration of surface material and landform development. Previous studies have extensively documented the effects of trees, shrubs, herbs, and soil on runoff and sediment during erosive rainfall; however, the precise interactions among these factors and their influence on RAS yield within the vegetation hierarchy remain unclear. Using the random forest algorithm and the structural equation model, this research aimed to quantify the interaction of numerous variables within diverse vegetation hierarchies and how they affect RAS, as well as to identify critical indicators that influence RAS. The structural equation model results show that the grass properties have a direct effect on soil properties, and the grass properties and soil properties both affect the canopy properties directly; the soil properties and canopy properties are the main factors influencing runoff and sediment directly. In addition, the grass properties could affect RAS by influencing the soil properties indirectly, and the soil properties could also affect RAS indirectly by influencing the canopy properties. Height difference (HD) between two layers of vegetation had the highest weight of 1.043 among the canopy variables, showing that HD has a substantial effect on RAS. Among the soil properties, soil bulk density and maximum field capacity have a significant impact on RAS. We conclude that canopy properties have the greatest impact on RAS. In the future, more Caragana microphylla Lam and Robinia pseudoacacia Linn plants should be planted to prevent soil erosion. This study provides a scientific basis for vegetation planting management and soil erosion control on the Loess Plateau.

Plant glutathione peroxidases (GPXs) are important enzymes for removing reactive oxygen species in plant cells and are closely related to the stress resistance of plants. This study identified the GPX gene family members of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), “CM333”, at the whole-genome level to clarify their expression patterns and enzyme activity changes under abiotic stress and ABA treatment. The results showed that eight CaGPX genes were unevenly distributed across four chromosomes and one scaffold of the pepper genome, and their protein sequences had Cys residues typical of the plant GPX domains. The analysis of collinearity, phylogenetic tree, gene structure, and conserved motifs indicated that the CaGPX gene sequence is conserved, structurally similar, and more closely related to the sequence structure of Arabidopsis. Meanwhile, many cis elements involved in stress, hormones, development, and light response were found in the promoter region of the CaGPX gene. In addition, CaGPX1/4 and CaGPX6 were basically expressed in all tissues, and their expression levels were significantly upregulated under abiotic stress and ABA treatment. Subcellular localization showed that CaGPX1 and CaGPX4 are localized in chloroplasts. Additionally, the variations in glutathione peroxidase activity (GSH-Px) mostly agreed with the variations in gene expression. In summary, the CaGPXs gene may play an important role in the development of peppers and their response to abiotic stress and hormones.

BackgroundThe novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 caused the global COVID-19 pandemic. Emerging reports support lower mortality and reduced case numbers in highland areas; however, comparative studies on the cumulative impact of environmental factors and viral genetic diversity on COVID-19 infection rates have not been performed to date. ObjectiveThe aims of this study were to determine the difference in COVID-19 infection rates between high and low altitudes, and to explore whether the difference in the pandemic trend in the high-altitude region of China compared to that of the lowlands is influenced by environmental factors, population density, and biological mechanisms. MethodsWe examined the correlation between population density and COVID-19 cases through linear regression. A zero-shot model was applied to identify possible factors correlated to COVID-19 infection. We further analyzed the correlation of meteorological and air quality factors with infection cases using the Spearman correlation coefficient. Mixed-effects multiple linear regression was applied to evaluate the associations between selected factors and COVID-19 cases adjusting for covariates. Lastly, the relationship between environmental factors and mutation frequency was evaluated using the same correlation techniques mentioned above. ResultsAmong the 24,826 confirmed COVID-19 cases reported from 40 cities in China from January 23, 2020, to July 7, 2022, 98.4% (n=24,430) were found in the lowlands. Population density was positively correlated with COVID-19 cases in all regions (ρ=0.641, P=.003). In high-altitude areas, the number of COVID-19 cases was negatively associated with temperature, sunlight hours, and UV index (P=.003, P=.001, and P=.009, respectively) and was positively associated with wind speed (ρ=0.388, P0.1). Key nonsynonymous mutations showed positive correlations with altitude, wind speed, and air pressure and showed negative correlations with temperature, UV index, and sunlight hours. ConclusionsBy comparison with the lowlands, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases was substantially lower in high-altitude regions of China, and the population density, temperature, sunlight hours, UV index, wind speed, PM2.5, and CO influenced the cumulative pandemic trend in the highlands. The identified influence of environmental factors on SARS-CoV-2 sequence variants adds knowledge of the impact of altitude on COVID-19 infection, offering novel suggestions for preventive intervention.

The use of a supersonic separator presents a novel approach for separating ammonia (NH3) from hydrogen (H2). Even trace amounts of water (H2O) can significantly influence the condensation characteristics of NH3. This study presents mathematical models for homogeneous NH3 and H2O condensation and heterogeneous NH3–H2O condensation. Through computational analysis, we revealed that the droplet radius and liquid mass fraction of a single condensable gas condensation increased accordingly with increasing inlet condensable gas content. Interactions between the condensation processes of NH3 and H2O were also captured in the simulation. Notably, at 100 ppm H2O content, H2O spontaneously condensed before NH3, serving as a condensation nucleus for NH3, and the heterogeneous condensation of NH3 decreased the rate of its spontaneous condensation. At an inlet H2O content of 50 ppm, the onset of spontaneous NH3 condensation coincided with that of H2O, with H2O having a negligible effect on NH3 condensation. The impact of H2O on NH3 condensation transitioned from minimal to inhibitory and then to facilitative as the content of H2O increased from 25 ppm to 250 ppm. At the nozzle outlet, the liquid mass fraction of NH3 initially decreased from 0.0414 to 0.0352 and then increased to 0.0446.

In order to address the issues pertaining to the subjective nature and limited precision associated with selecting feature points in the point cloud of a large steel truss structure, this study proposes a batch automatic extraction approach for identifying key feature information, including boundaries, corner points, and bolt holes of large steel truss components. This method relies on the nested application of established processing algorithms such as Euclidean clusters, regional growth clusters, and random sampling consensus. In addition, a novel approach is suggested for validating the precision of feature information extraction through the utilization of standard theoretical models. The results of the experimental and large-scale lower chord tests demonstrate that our approach is not dependent on specialized software, exhibits excellent efficiency, and possesses an acceptable degree of automation. The findings of this study can provide accurate data support for reverse modeling, virtual trial assembly, and dimensional inspection of steel truss components.

Abstract Background Long term care (LTC) services for functionally impaired senior citizens are crucial for addressing the challenges of aging. However, research on eligibility criteria and coverage of LTC in China is lacking. Our objective is to assess the current status of LTC and explore eligibility criteria and coverage for the elderly. Methods This is a cross-sectional study conducted in two first-tier cities in China. Residents aged 65 or over were recruited from a nursing home and four primary hospitals. Participants were divided into three groups (bedridden, domestic, and community), then six grades (grade one to six) according to the Longshi Scale, and their functional ability was assessed using the Modified Barthel Index. Information such as diseases, complications, and daily care needs were collected. Nursing staff were invited to indicate patients’ needs for care. A one-way ANOVA test, Kruskal Wallis H test and Mann–Whitney U test were used to explore the differences of variables in three Longshi groups or Longshi grades. Results Among all 1157 participants, with an average age of 80.54, 69.3% were in the bedridden group. The most common diagnosis was stroke (71.4%), with the most prevalent complication being pulmonary infection (25.2%). In the nursing assessment, basic health care, disease care, activity care, complication prevention care and psychosocial care were summarized as the five main aspects of LTC for the elderly. Feeding, bathing, drinking, bowel management and bladder management were identified as the basic care which fulfills participants’ basic physical needs in each Longshi group. Mouth care, artificial airway management, and body reposition, which can prevent immobility complications, were highly demanded by bedridden elderly. Conclusions The elderly in grade one to three are the ones in need of LTC most. The content of LTC for elderly should include basic care which fulfills their basic physical needs and complication care which can prevent immobility complications. The evidence of this research may contribute to the design of LTC in China. Abstract Super-enhancers (SEs) are regulatory element clusters related to cell identity and disease. While the studies illustrating the function of SE-associated long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains few. In our research, a SE-driven lncRNA, LINC00880, was identified, which showed higher expression in LUAD compared to normal tissues and indicated worse outcomes in stage I LUADs. We found that the transcription factor (TF) FOXP3 could simultaneously occupy the promoter and SE regions of LINC00880 to promote its transcription. The oncogenic function of LINC00880 was validated both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanically, LINC00880 binds to the protein CDK1 to increase its kinase activity, which rely on the phosphorylation state of pT161 in CDK1. LINC00880 also promotes the interaction between CDK1 and PRDX1. Moreover, LINC00880 interacts with PRDX1, which indicates that LINC00880 acts as a protein scaffold between CDK1 and PRDX1 to form a ternary complex, thereby resulting in the activation of PI3K/AKT to promote malignancy. Our results reveal that the SE-associated lncRNA LINC00880 regulates the CDK1/PRDX1 axis to sustain the malignancy of LUAD, providing a novel therapeutic target.

Abstract Apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death, is essential for growth and tissue homeostasis. Apoptotic bodies (ApoBDs) are a form of extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by dying cells in the last stage of apoptosis and were previously regarded as debris of dead cells. Recent studies unraveled that ApoBDs are not cell debris but the bioactive treasure left behind by the dying cells with an important role in intercellular communications related to human health and various diseases. Defective clearance of ApoBDs and infected-cells-derived ApoBDs are possible etiology of some diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the function and mechanism of the action of ApoBDs in different physiological and pathological conditions. Recent advances in ApoBDs have elucidated the immunomodulatory, virus removal, vascular protection, tissue regenerative, and disease diagnostic potential of ApoBDs. Moreover, ApoBDs can be used as drug carriers enhancing drug stability, cellular uptake, and targeted therapy efficacy. These reports from the literature indicate that ApoBDs hold promising potential for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of various diseases, including cancer, systemic inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and tissue regeneration. This review summarizes the recent advances in ApoBDs-related research and discusses the role of ApoBDs in health and diseases as well as the challenges and prospects of ApoBDs-based diagnostic and therapeutic applications. As the capital of China and a densely populated major city, the characteristics of Beijing’s near-surface wind field change significantly with the increase in the density of underlying urban structures. The high randomness of natural wind makes it extremely difficult to develop a universally applicable wind-resistant load design code based on topographic factors and architectural features. This article takes the wind speeds recorded at 15 different height levels within the urban area by the 325 m meteorological tower in Beijing from 1991 to 2020 as the research subject. It quantifies the wind speed trends at different heights and introduces time-varying functions to establish a non-stationary wind speed model based on the optimal model. Additionally, it compares the basic wind speeds and wind pressure height variation coefficients obtained from measurements with the standards. The results show that, during the past 30 years of urbanization, the near-surface wind speed in the Beijing area has shown a decreasing trend. The model incorporating time-varying functions exhibited the best fit and demonstrated good predictive capabilities, with its calculated basic wind speeds being relatively high. The wind pressure height variation coefficient values in Beijing are between Class C and Class D terrains, being closer to Class C at lower altitudes. The conclusion reveals that urbanization has a significant impact on wind speeds, primarily concentrated at lower height levels, and that the basic wind speeds calculated based on standards underestimate the actual conditions when this impact is not considered. Although the average wind speed’s wind profile index across the entire time series is mostly greater than the fixed value of 0.3 given by Class D, this represents an overestimated wind profile index for maximum wind speeds.

Weedy rice is the most challenging weed species to remove in rice production. We found a novel phenotype of seedling leaves which rapidly generates necrotic spots in response to imidazolinone herbicides in weedy rice, but its influencing factors and formation basis are still unknown. In this study, we used the leaf necrotic spot-producing type of weedy rice as the material. First, leaf necrotic spots were defined as physiological and vacuole-mediated cell necrosis by microscopic examination. The imazethapyr concentration was positively correlated with the degree of necrotic spots occurring, while the action site was in accordance with necrosis using herbicide stability tests combined with fluorescence parameters. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis revealed significant differences in the gene expression of endoplasmic reticulum stress and the lipid metabolism membrane structure damage pathway during necrosis, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The light–temperature test also showed that high temperature and intense light could promote the appearance of necrotic spots. These experimental results are helpful in clarifying the process and basis of imazethapyr in inducing the rapid generation of necrotic spots in rice leaves and providing new insight into understanding the mechanism of response to imidazolinone herbicides and the control of weedy rice.

Eco-agricultural technology is crucial in alleviating agricultural resource scarcity and environmental pressures. However, financial constraints affect its successful promotion. Digital finance significantly impacts farmers. However, existing research neglects the impact of digital finance on farmers’ adoption of eco-agricultural technology. This study focuses on rice-crayfish co-cultivation technology. It utilizes survey data from 1063 households in China. An endogenous switching probit model is employed to solve self-selection bias. The results are as follows: First, the average treatment effect is 51.5%. This indicates that if farmers who use digital finance were to stop using it, the probability of adopting rice-crayfish co-cultivation technology would decrease by 51.5%. Therefore, digital finance is beneficial for farmers in adopting this technology. Second, heterogeneity analysis shows that the promoting effect of digital finance is a greater promoting effect on older farmers, and on those with lower education levels and higher proportions of agricultural income. This suggests a greater reliance on digital financial services among vulnerable groups. Third, digital finance promotes farmers’ adoption of rice-crayfish co-cultivation technology by alleviating financial constraints, expanding information channels, and increasing social capital accumulation. Overall, the findings offer valuable insights for formulating supportive eco-agricultural policies.

Abstract Since the identification of the first case of pneumonia of unknown cause in 2019, the COVID‐19 pandemic has spread the globe for over 3 years. As the most populous country in the world, China's disease prevention policies and response plans concern the health of the country's 1.4 billion people and beyond. During the course of the pandemic, scientific research has been accumulated and given evidence‐based support to the official guidance of COVID‐19 management. The National Health Commission of China have compiled, published, and updated a total of 10 versions of the “Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for COVID‐19 Patients” to better inform clinical practitioners and staff to effectively screen, diagnose, manage, treat, and care for cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. This paper compares and summarizes each version of the protocol in terms of etiology and epidemiology, clinical manifestation and diagnosis, treatment and nursing, disease control and management, presenting detailed changes, additions, deletions, and refinement of the protocols.

Abstract Background BRASSINAZOLE-RESISTANT (BZR) is a class of specific transcription factor (TFs) involved in brassinosteroid (BR) signal transduction. The regulatory mechanism of target genes mediated by BZR has become one of the key research areas in plant BR signaling networks. However, the functions of the BZR gene family in cucumber have not been well characterized. Results In this study, six CsBZR gene family members were identified by analyzing the conserved domain of BES1 N in the cucumber genome. The size of CsBZR proteins ranges from 311 to 698 amino acids and are mostly located in the nucleus. Phylogenetic analysis divided CsBZR genes into three subgroups. The gene structure and conserved domain showed that the BZR genes domain in the same group was conserved. Cis-acting element analysis showed that cucumber BZR genes were mainly involved in hormone response, stress response and growth regulation. The qRT-PCR results also confirmed CsBZR response to hormones and abiotic stress. Conclusion Collectively, the CsBZR gene is involved in regulating cucumber growth and development, particularly in hormone response and response to abiotic stress. These findings provide valuable information for understanding the structure and expression patterns of BZR genes.

Abstract RNF2 is a RING domain-containing E3 ubiquitin ligase that mediate histone H2A mono-ubiquitination to repress gene transcription, but its expression patterns and molecular function in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unclear. Herein, we extracted data from TGCA database and validated RNF2 expression in our own cohort, which revealed that RNF2 was highly expressed in HCC and was associated with malignant characteristics and poor prognosis of HCC. Moreover, RNF2 was demonstrated to promote HCC metastasis via enhancing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, RNF2 repressed E-Cadherin transcription by increasing the deposition of H2K119ub at the E-Cadherin promoter region. In addition, RNF2-regulated crosstalk between H2AK119ub, H3K27me3 and H3K4me3 synergistically reduced E-Cadherin transcription, which promoted EMT and HCC metastasis. These results indicate that RNF2 played an oncogenic role in HCC progression via inducing EMT, and RNF2 could be a potential therapeutic target for HCC.

Abstract Medical devices are commonly implanted underneath the skin, but how to real‐time noninvasively monitor their migration, integrity, and biodegradation in human body is still a formidable challenge. Here, the study demonstrates that benzyl violet 4B (BV‐4B), a main component in the FDA‐approved surgical suture, is found to produce fluorescence signal in the first near‐infrared window (NIR‐I, 700–900 nm) in polar solutions, whereas BV‐4B self‐assembles into highly crystalline aggregates upon a formation of ultrasmall nanodots and can emit strong fluorescence in the second near‐infrared window (NIR‐II, 1000–1700 nm) with a dramatic bathochromic shift in the absorption spectrum of ≈200 nm. Intriguingly, BV‐4B‐involved suture knots underneath the skin can be facilely monitored during the whole degradation process in vivo, and the rupture of the customized BV‐4B‐coated silicone catheter is noninvasively diagnosed by NIR‐II imaging. Furthermore, BV‐4B suspended in embolization glue achieves hybrid fluorescence‐guided surgery (hybrid FGS) for arteriovenous malformation. As a proof‐of‐concept study, the solid‐state BV‐4B is successfully used for NIR‐II imaging of surgical sutures in operations of patients. Overall, as a clinically translatable solid‐state dye, BV‐4B can be applied for in vivo monitoring the fate of medical devices by NIR‐II imaging.

BackgroundWe aimed to investigate the efficacy of a novel regimen, external beam radiation (RT) combined with trans arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and lenvatinib (LEN), in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombus.MethodsWe prospectively observed 102 participants from three tertiary medical centers in China between October 2018 and October 2020, who chose either RT plus TACE and LEN (RT-TACE-LEN) or TACE and LEN (TACE-LEN). LEN (12 mg or 8 mg daily) was administrated orally and continued until progression or intolerable side effects were noted. TACE was given one day after administration of LEN, and RT began within 4 weeks after the first TACE. The median dose/fraction of RT was 50 Gy/25 fractions (range: 45-60 Gy/25 fractions). Overall survival and progression free survival were compared between two groups, and complications were assessed.ResultsBoth 51 patients received RT-TACE-LEN and TACE-LEN, respectively. Most patients had tumor size> 5 cm (73.8%) and tumor number≥ 2 (69.9%). The overall incidence of toxicities was significantly higher in RT-TACE-LEN group than TACE-LEN group (100% vs. 64.7%, p< 0.001), but incidences of grade 3-4 toxicities were comparable (54.9% vs. 49.0%, p= 0.552). Both median overall survival (22.8 vs. 17.1 months, p= 0.031) and median progression-free survival (12.8 vs. 10.5 months, p= 0.035) were significantly longer after RT-TACE-LEN treatment than TACE-LEN.ConclusionsThe addition of RT to TACE and LEN was safe, and might improve clinical outcomes of patients with advanced HCC, which needs conformation from further studies.

To effectively classify tree species within datasets characterized by limited samples, we introduced a novel approach named DenseNetBL, founded upon the fusion of the DenseNet architecture and a pivotal bottleneck layer. This bottleneck layer, encompassing a compact convolutional component, played a central role in our methodology. The evaluation of DenseNetBL was conducted under varying conditions, encompassing small-sample tree species data, extensive remote sensing datasets, and state-of-the-art classifiers. Furthermore, a quantitative assessment was executed to extract tree species areas. This was achieved by quantifying pixel areas within manually delineated tree species maps and classifier-generated counterparts. The findings of our study indicated that, in scenarios devoid of pre-trained weights, DenseNetBL consistently outperformed its DenseNet counterpart with equivalent layer numbers. In the realm of small-sample situations, both the Swin Transformer and Vision Transformer exhibited inferior performance when juxtaposed with DenseNet and DenseNetBL. Remarkably, among the shallow architectures, DenseNet33BL showcased superior aptitude for small-sample tree species classification, culminating in the most commendable results (Overall Accuracy (OA) = 0.901, Kappa = 0.892). Conversely, the Vision Transformer yielded the least favorable classification outcomes (OA = 0.767, Kappa = 0.708). The amalgamation of DenseNet33BL and simple linear iterative clustering emerged as the optimal strategy for attaining robust tree species area extraction results across two prototypical forests. In contrast, DenseNet121 exhibited suboptimal performance in the same forests, attaining the least satisfactory tree species area extraction results. These comprehensive findings underscore the efficacy of our DenseNetBL approach in addressing the challenges associated with small-sample tree species classification and accurate tree species area extraction.

The transport of sediments is a crucial part of soil erosion. Accurately calculating the sediment transport capacity is key to the construction of soil erosion process models. Research on Tc has focused mainly on the dynamics of a single particle of sediment and hydraulic variables. There have been few studies of the impact of soil aggregates on the Tc. To clarify how sediment characteristics, including those for single particles and aggregates, affect the Tc of overland flow with no raindrop import, flume experiments were implemented at slope gradients varying from 5.24% to 26.80% and flow discharges ranging from 0.68 to 5.41 × 10−3 m2 s−1. The experimental materials were five typical soils in China. The results indicated that the correlation between the measured Tc and sediment mechanical composition indexes of the five soils was indistinctive in this study. The sediment settling velocity with aggregates has a significant correlation with the measured Tc. New equations, including for the sediment settling velocity with aggregates ωud75, were established to calculate the Tc. The empirical equation that included ωud75, slope gradient and unit discharge performed greatly in predicting Tc (R2 = 0.93, NSE = 0.90). ωud75 can effectively improve the calculation accuracy of Tc. The new equation including flow and sediment properties obtained through dimensional analysis performed well in predicting Tc (R2 = 0.99, NSE = 0.91), and the calculation accuracy was better than that of the empirical model derived in this study. These findings indicate that the sediment settling velocity is an important variable in the equation for predicting sediment transport capacity of overland flow.

Abstract Large-scale distributed training mainly consists of sub-model parallel training and parameter synchronization. With the expansion of training workers, the efficiency of parameter synchronization will be affected. To tackle this problem, we first propose 2D-TGA, a grouping AllReduce method based on the two-dimensional torus topology. This method synchronizes the model parameters by grouping and makes full use of bandwidth. Secondly, we propose a distributed algorithm, 2D-TGA-ADMM, which combines the 2D-TGA with the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). It focuses on sub-model training and reduces the wait time among workers in the synchronization process. Finally, experimental results on the Tianhe-2 supercomputing platform show that compared with the $${\mathtt {MPI\_Allreduce}}$$ MPI _ Allreduce , the 2D-TGA could shorten the synchronization wait time by $$33\%$$ 33 % .

Background Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii) is the causative agent of Q fever and is found worldwide; however, prosthetic joint infections caused by C. burnetii are rarely seen. Because of advances in molecular diagnostic techniques, prosthetic joint infection (PJI) caused by C. burnetii can now be diagnosed. Case Presentation A 77‐year‐old male who had undergone total knee arthroplasty had a displaced prosthesis and periprosthetic osteolysis; he had no obvious signs of infection, and microbiological culture was negative. However, C. burnetii was detected by metagenomic next‐generation sequencing (mNGS) and pathogen‐targeted next‐generation sequencing (ptNGS). Finally, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) confirmed the diagnosis of C. burnetii prosthetic joint infection (PJI). After revision surgery (one‐stage revision) and oral antibiotics (doxycycline and moxifloxacin hydrochloride), the patient's symptoms disappeared, and he regained the ability to walk. During the 6‐month follow‐up, the patient's knee showed no signs of swelling, pain or the recurrence of infection, and he experienced no significant complications. We also present a review of the literature for other cases of C. burnetii PJI. Conclusions The symptoms of C. burnetii PJI may be different from those of Q fever, which may lead to misdiagnosis. mNGS and ptNGS may be helpful for the identification of C. burnetii. Once the diagnosis of C. burnetii PJI is confirmed, doxycycline in combination with a fluoroquinolone can be effectively administered after revision surgery.

For the formation and obstacle avoidance challenges of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) in complex scenarios, this paper proposes an improved collaborative strategy based on APF (artificial potential field). This strategy combines graph theory, the Leader–Follower method, and APF. Firstly, we used graph theory to design formation topology and dynamically adjust the distances between UAVs in real time. Secondly, we introduced APF to avoid obstacles in complicated environments. This algorithm innovatively integrates the Leader–Follower formation method. The design of this attractive field is replaced by the leader’s attraction to the followers, overcoming the problem of unreachable targets in APF. Meanwhile, the introduced Leader–Follower mode reduces information exchange within the swarm, realizing a more efficient “few controlling many” paradigm. Afterwards, we incorporated rotational force to assist the swarm in breaking free from local minima. Ultimately, the stability of the integrated formation strategy was demonstrated using Lyapunov functions. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy were validated across multiple platforms.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a retinal degenerative disease associated with a diversity of genetic mutations. In a natural progression study (NPS) evaluating the molecular changes in Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rats using lipidomic profiling, RNA sequencing, and gene expression analyses, changes associated with retinal degeneration from p21 to p60 were evaluated, where reductions in retinal ALOX15 expression corresponded with disease progression. This important enzyme catalyzes the formation of specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) such as lipoxins (LXs), resolvins (RvDs), and docosapentaenoic acid resolvins (DPA RvDs), where reduced ALOX15 corresponded with reduced SPMs. Retinal DPA RvD2 levels were found to correlate with retinal structural and functional decline. Retinal RNA sequencing comparing p21 with p60 showed an upregulation of microglial inflammatory pathways accompanied by impaired damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) clearance pathways. This analysis suggests that ALXR/FPR2 activation can ameliorate disease progression, which was supported by treatment with an LXA4 analog, NAP1051, which was able to promote the upregulation of ALOX12 and ALOX15. This study showed that retinal inflammation from activated microglia and dysregulation of lipid metabolism were central to the pathogenesis of retinal degeneration in RP, where ALXR/FPR2 activation was able to preserve retinal structure and function.

The wet carbonation process of steel slag (SS) is envisaged to be an effective way to sequestrate CO2 and improve the properties of SS as a supplementary cementitious material. However, the carbonation process still struggles with having a low carbonation efficiency. This paper studied the effect of glycine on the accelerated carbonation of SS. The phase composition change of carbonated SS was analyzed via XRD, FT-IR, and TG–DTG. The carbonation process of SS is facilitated by the assistance of glycine, with which the carbonation degree is increased. After 60 min of carbonation, SS with glycine obtained a CO2 sequestration rate of 9.42%. Meanwhile, the carbonation reaction could decrease the content of free calcium oxide in SS. This significantly improves the soundness of SS–cement cementitious material, and the compressive strength of cementitious materials that contain carbonated SS with glycine is improved. Additionally, the cycling performance of glycine in the successive wet carbonation process of SS was investigated. Multicycle experiments via solvent recovery demonstrated that although the promotion effect of glycine was reduced after each cycle, compared with the SS–water system, the carbonation process could still be facilitated, demonstrating that successive wet carbonation via solvent recovery has considerable potential. Herein, we provide a new idea to facilitate the wet carbonation process of SS and improve the properties of SS–cement cementitious material.

BackgroundBiomedical relation extraction (RE) is of great importance for researchers to conduct systematic biomedical studies. It not only helps knowledge mining, such as knowledge graphs and novel knowledge discovery, but also promotes translational applications, such as clinical diagnosis, decision-making, and precision medicine. However, the relations between biomedical entities are complex and diverse, and comprehensive biomedical RE is not yet well established. ObjectiveWe aimed to investigate and improve large-scale RE with diverse relation types and conduct usability studies with application scenarios to optimize biomedical text mining. MethodsData sets containing 125 relation types with different entity semantic levels were constructed to evaluate the impact of entity semantic information on RE, and performance analysis was conducted on different model architectures and domain models. This study also proposed a continued pretraining strategy and integrated models with scripts into a tool. Furthermore, this study applied RE to the COVID-19 corpus with article topics and application scenarios of clinical interest to assess and demonstrate its biological interpretability and usability. ResultsThe performance analysis revealed that RE achieves the best performance when the detailed semantic type is provided. For a single model, PubMedBERT with continued pretraining performed the best, with an F1-score of 0.8998. Usability studies on COVID-19 demonstrated the interpretability and usability of RE, and a relation graph database was constructed, which was used to reveal existing and novel drug paths with edge explanations. The models (including pretrained and fine-tuned models), integrated tool (Docker), and generated data (including the COVID-19 relation graph database and drug paths) have been made publicly available to the biomedical text mining community and clinical researchers. ConclusionsThis study provided a comprehensive analysis of RE with diverse relation types. Optimized RE models and tools for diverse relation types were developed, which can be widely used in biomedical text mining. Our usability studies provided a proof-of-concept demonstration of how large-scale RE can be leveraged to facilitate novel research.

IntroductionExcessive alcohol consumption leads to a myriad of detrimental health effects, including alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Unfortunately, no available treatments exist to combat the progression of ALD beyond corticosteroid administration and/or liver transplants. Dihydromyricetin (DHM) is a bioactive polyphenol and flavonoid that has traditionally been used in Chinese herbal medicine for its robust antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is derived from many plants, including Hovenia dulcis and is found as the active ingredient in a variety of popular hangover remedies. Investigations utilizing DHM have demonstrated its ability to alleviate ethanol-induced disruptions in mitochondrial and lipid metabolism, while demonstrating hepatoprotective activity.MethodsFemale c57BL/6J mice (n = 12/group) were treated using the Lieber DeCarli forced-drinking and ethanol (EtOH) containing liquid diet, for 5 weeks. Mice were randomly divided into three groups: (1) No-EtOH, (2) EtOH [5% (v/v)], and (3) EtOH [5% (v/v)] + DHM (6 mg/mL). Mice were exposed to ethanol for 2 weeks to ensure the development of ALD pathology prior to receiving dihydromyricetin supplementation. Statistical analysis included one-way ANOVA along with Bonferroni multiple comparison tests, where p ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsDihydromyricetin administration significantly improved aminotransferase levels (AST/ALT) and reduced levels of circulating lipids including LDL/VLDL, total cholesterol (free cholesterol), and triglycerides. DHM demonstrated enhanced lipid clearance by way of increased lipophagy activity, shown as the increased interaction and colocalization of p62/SQSTM-1, LC3B, and PLIN-1 proteins. DHM-fed mice had increased hepatocyte-to-hepatocyte lipid droplet (LD) heterogeneity, suggesting increased neutralization and sequestration of free lipids into LDs. DHM administration significantly reduced prominent pro-inflammatory cytokines commonly associated with ALD pathology such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-17.DiscussionDihydromyricetin is commercially available as a dietary supplement. The results of this proof-of-concept study demonstrate its potential utility and functionality as a cost-effective and safe candidate to combat inflammation and the progression of ALD pathology.
