Abstract

We report a study of the e+e−→D+D−π+π− process using e+e− collision data samples with an integrated luminosity of 2.5fb−1 at center-of-mass energies from 4.36 to 4.60GeV, collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The D1(2420)+ is observed in the D+π+π− mass spectrum. The mass and width of the D1(2420)+ are measured to be (2427.2±1.0stat.±1.2syst.)MeV/c2 and (23.2±2.3stat.±2.3syst.)MeV, respectively. In addition, the Born cross sections of the e+e−→D1(2420)+D−+c.c.→D+D−π+π− and e+e−→ψ(3770)π+π−→D+D−π+π− processes are measured as a function of the center-of-mass energy.

2. MEX3A Mediates p53 Degradation to Suppress Ferroptosis and Facilitate Ovarian Cancer Tumorigenesis

Abstract

Epithelial ovarian cancer is a highly heterogeneous and malignant female cancer with an overall low survival rate. Mutations in p53 are prevalent in the major ovarian cancer histotype, high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC), while p53 mutations are much less frequent in other ovarian cancer subtypes, particularly in ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC). Advanced stage OCCC with wild-type (WT) p53 has a worse prognosis and increased drug resistance, metastasis, and recurrence than HGSOC. The mechanisms responsible for driving the aggressiveness of WT p53-expressing ovarian cancer remain poorly understood. Here, we found that upregulation of MEX3A, a dual-function protein containing a RING finger domain and an RNA-binding domain, was critical for tumorigenesis in WT p53-expressing ovarian cancer. MEX3A overexpression enhanced the growth and clonogenicity of OCCC cell lines. In contrast, depletion of MEX3A in OCCC cells, as well as ovarian teratocarcinoma cells, reduced cell survival and proliferative ability. MEX3A depletion also inhibited tumor growth and prolonged survival in orthotopic xenograft models. MEX3A depletion did not alter p53 mRNA level but did increase p53 protein stability. MEX3A-mediated p53 protein degradation was crucial to suppress ferroptosis and enhance tumorigenesis. Consistently, p53 knockdown reversed the effects of MEX3A depletion. Together, our observations identified MEX3A as an important oncogenic factor promoting tumorigenesis in ovarian cancer cells expressing WT p53. Significance: Degradation of p53 mediated by MEX3A drives ovarian cancer growth by circumventing p53 tumor suppressive functions, suggesting targeting MEX3A as a potential strategy for treating of ovarian cancer expressing WT p53.

Abstract

Erythroderma (exfoliative dermatitis) associates with important metabolic changes that include an enhancement in energy expenditure. The key components to total energy expenditure (TEE) include basal metabolic rate (~68% of TEE), physical activity (~22% of TEE) and thermic effect of food (~10% of TEE). In the erythrodermic state, there are likely multiple contributors to the increase in basal metabolic rate such as ‘caloric drain’ resulting from increased evaporation of water from enhanced transepidermal water loss, increased activity of the cardiovascular system (including high‐output cardiac failure), increased non‐shivering thermogenesis and hormonal changes (such as hypercortisolaemia). A change to patient’s level of physical activity and appetite as a result of ill health status may further impact on their total energy expenditure and energy consumption. In part two of this two part concise review, we explore the key constituents of energy homeostasis, the potential mechanisms impacting on energy homeostasis in erythroderma and suggest much needed dietetic management strategies for this important condition.\ud \ud

Abstract

Erythroderma (exfoliative dermatitis), first described by Von Hebra in 1868, manifests as a cutaneous inflammatory state, with associated skin barrier and metabolic dysfunctions. The annual incidence of erythroderma is estimated to be 1 to 2 persons per 100,000 population in Europe with a higher male-to-female ratio. Erythroderma may present at birth, develop acutely or insidiously (due to progression of an underlying primary pathology, including malignancy). Whilst there is a broad range of diseases that associate with erythroderma, the vast majority of cases result from pre-existing and chronic dermatoses. In part one of this two part concise review, we explore the underlying causes, clinical presentation, pathogenesis and investigation of erythroderma, and suggest potential treatment targets for erythroderma with unknown causes.

Abstract

Using a data sample of 448.1 × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the first observation of the electromagnetic Dalitz decay ψ ( 3686 ) → η ′ e + e − , with significances of 7.0σ and 6.3σ when reconstructing the η ′ meson via its decay modes η ′ → γ π + π − and η ′ → π + π − η ( η → γ γ ), respectively. The weighted average branching fraction is determined to be B ( ψ ( 3686 ) → η ′ e + e − ) = ( 1.90 ± 0.25 ± 0.11 ) × 10 − 6 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Abstract

Purpose This paper aims to explore the expectations of relevant stakeholders in the engineering field to better understand the demands of the twenty-first century. As the number of unemployed continues to grow in Malaysia, it is evident that as industries continue to develop, demands and new requirements for skilled workers change over time. Design/methodology/approach Through face-to-face interviews, the study explored the expectations of accreditation bodies, industry operators and academics in the engineering field. Findings Three major findings were documented: mismatch of expectations in engineering field across the stakeholders; the expected “must-have-skills” from the perspectives of the stakeholders; and the need to reassess how information transmission is cascaded to all stakeholders and remains relevant to market demand. Research limitations/implications It is recognized that the findings from this study may only be relevant to the engineering field and not to the other different disciplines, but the qualitative findings provide some key issues in understanding the gap between relevant stakeholders that may motivate future studies to further extend into the other disciplines. Practical implications With this mismatch drawn out clearly, all relevant stakeholders would be able to revisit and revaluate their existing strategy in addressing, cascading crucial information and equipping graduates with analytical skills to gain immediate employment in the market. Originality/value A clearer understanding on the expectations and the “must-have-skills” required in the engineering field in the twenty-first century.

Abstract

Introduction Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). However, there is a lack of data available about SSI in children worldwide, especially from low-income and middle-income countries. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of SSI in children and associations between SSI and morbidity across human development settings. Methods A multicentre, international, prospective, validated cohort study of children aged under 16 years undergoing clean-contaminated, contaminated or dirty gastrointestinal surgery. Any hospital in the world providing paediatric surgery was eligible to contribute data between January and July 2016. The primary outcome was the incidence of SSI by 30 days. Relationships between explanatory variables and SSI were examined using multilevel logistic regression. Countries were stratified into high development, middle development and low development groups using the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Results Of 1159 children across 181 hospitals in 51 countries, 523 (45·1%) children were from high HDI, 397 (34·2%) from middle HDI and 239 (20·6%) from low HDI countries. The 30-day SSI rate was 6.3% (33/523) in high HDI, 12·8% (51/397) in middle HDI and 24·7% (59/239) in low HDI countries. SSI was associated with higher incidence of 30-day mortality, intervention, organ-space infection and other HAIs, with the highest rates seen in low HDI countries. Median length of stay in patients who had an SSI was longer (7.0 days), compared with 3.0 days in patients who did not have an SSI. Use of laparoscopy was associated with significantly lower SSI rates, even after accounting for HDI. Conclusion The odds of SSI in children is nearly four times greater in low HDI compared with high HDI countries. Policies to reduce SSI should be prioritised as part of the wider global agenda. ©

11. Compound bioengineering protein supplementation improves intestinal health and growth performance of broilers

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Currently, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are of growing interest as potential substitutes for antibiotic growth promoters in animal production. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of bioengineering artificial Parasin I protein (API) and artificial plectasin protein (APL) (named as compound bioengineering protein, CBP) on growth performance and intestinal health of broilers. A total of 450 one-day-old Arbor Acres male healthy broilers were randomly allotted to 5 dietary groups with 10 replicates of 9 individuals in each replicate and supplemented with 0, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 mg/kg CBP for 6 wk. Dietary CBP supplementation increased (P < 0.01) body weight (6 wk), average daily gain (0–6 wk), and average daily feed intake (3–6 wk and 0–6 wk). CBP addition enhanced antioxidant capacity, which was accompanied by the higher (P < 0.05) activity of serum total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) (750 mg/kg), jejunal glutathione peroxidase (750 mg/kg), and T-AOC (500 and 1,000 mg/kg). Dietary CBP addition improved intestinal health, reflecting by the increased (P < 0.05) villus height to crypt depth ratio in the duodenum, the upregulated (P < 0.01) mRNA levels of claudin-1 (500 and 750 mg/kg) in the ileum, the downregulated (P < 0.01) mRNA expression of occludin (500 mg/kg) in the duodenum and claudin-1 (500 mg/kg) and occludin (500 and 750 mg/kg) in the jejunum, and the upregulated mRNA expression of (P < 0.01) mucin2 (MUC2) (1,000 mg/kg) in the duodenum. In addition, CBP upregulated (P < 0.01) IL-10 (1,000 mg/kg) in duodenum and ileum, and downregulated (P < 0.05) the mRNA expression of IL-6 (750 and 1,000 mg/kg), interferon-γ (1,000 mg/kg) in the jejunum and TNF-α (250 mg/kg) in the ileum. Furthermore, dietary CBP increased (P < 0.01) the abundance of total bacteria and Lactobacillus (500 and 750 mg/kg), and reduced (P < 0.05) the abundance of Escherichia coli (750 mg/kg) in the cecum. In conclusion, CBP supplementation enhances the antioxidant capacity, intestinal health, immune function, and ameliorates the gut microflora population, thus improving the growth performance of broilers. Dietary supplementation of 750 mg/kg CBP exhibits a better beneficial effect.

Abstract

EXAFS data in the temperature range 18 to 120 K were analysed using theoretical phases and three asymmetric model radial distribution functions: two Gaussian convolution models and a simple asymmetric Gaussian model. The convolution models were unable to reproduce the experimental phase shifts, whereas the latter gave good agreement. The results are compared with those from cumulant analyses. Multiple scattering analyses for the 18 and 120 K data using this model are also presented.

Abstract

We show full 3D simulation and fabrication of an active silicon-based photonic crystal chromatic dispersion compensator with high power efficiency and low power consumption. The device makes use of a novel structure where optical waveguiding and electrical transport properties can be individually tailored to a large extent.

Abstract

In the extra-high voltage long transmission line, the non-allowed increasing of power voltage and the corresponding transient oscillation over-voltage are often occurred. The continued burning of the secondary arc usually keeps quite a long time for the high voltage level, long line and large capacity. There must lead to the failure of the re-closing if the secondary arc is not extinguished promptly, which will affect the security and stability of the system. In this paper, the dynamic induced over-voltage model as well as the dynamic secondary arc model in single-phase asymmetric breaking is established based on the distribution parameters of EHV long-line. A novel kind of high-controlled shunt reactor with a small reactor in the neutral is adopted to suppress the transient oscillation over-voltage and the secondary arc. Since the neutral point small reactor is constrained by the positive-sequence and zero-sequence capacitance of the line and the shunt reactor as well. The coordinate control of the neutral controllable small reactor achieves the dynamic change in accordance with the high-controlled shunt reactor which can realize the compensation of the phase capacitor so as to suppress the induced over-voltage and the secondary arc effectively.

17. Effects of Y content and temperature on the damping capacity of extruded Mg-Y sheets

Abstract

The damping behavior of extruded Mg-xY (x = 0.5, 1.0, 3.0 wt.%) sheets were investigated in detail concerning the effects of Y addition and temperature, and the relationship between damping capacity and yield strength was discussed. At room temperature (RT), with Y content increasing from 0.5% to 3.0%, the damping capacity (Q−1) significantly decreased from 0.037 to 0.015. For all the studied sheets, the relationship between strain amplitude and Q−1 fitted well with the Granato and Lücke (G-L) dislocation damping model. With temperature increased, the G-L plots deviated from linearity indicating that the dislocation damping was not the only dominate mechanism, and the grain boundary sliding (GBS) could contribute to damping capacity. Consequently, the Q−1 increased remarkably above the critical temperature, and the critical temperature increased significantly from 50 °C to 290 °C with increasing Y contents from 0 to 3.0 wt.%. This result implied that the segregation of Y solutes at grain boundary could depress the GBS, which was consistent with the recent finding of segregation tendency for rare-earth solutes. The extruded Mg-1Y sheet exhibited slightly higher yield strength (Rp0.2) and Q−1 comparing with high-damping Mg-0.6Zr at RT. At an elevated temperature of 325 °C, the Mg-1Y sheet had similar Q−1 but over 3 times larger Rp0.2 than that of the pure Mg. The present study indicated that the extruded Mg-Y based alloys exhibited promising potential for developing high-performance damping alloys, especially for the elevated-temperature application. EXAFS data in the temperature range 18–120 K were analysed using theoretical phases and asymmetric model radial distribution functions. The results are compared with those from cumulant analysis. Multiple scattering analyses for the 18 and 120 K data using this model are also presented.

Abstract

In this work, the influence of the specimen size and orientation on the strength and ductility of additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V is analysed and rationalised in a complete framework. First, the mechanical properties are addressed – as a function of surface-type, orientation, and size. Our results show systematic strengthening and a drastic drop in ductility as the material section is reduced. These changes are rationalised and linked to changes in microstructure, chemistry, and surface quality. Strengthening is due to combined changes in α-lath thickness, oxygen enrichment, and prior-β grain size. The microstructural changes are due to the differences in the ratio between contouring and hatching laser strategies as the sample size decreases. Changes in the chemical composition is due to an increase in the surface-to-volume ratio as the sample size decreases. Lost of ductility is due to poor surface quality – smaller sections show rougher surfaces – and grain orientations. Finally, these findings are used to develop a set of conceptual design maps of strength and ductility as a function of the component type, thickness, and orientation. Abstract

In contrast to previous studies on AgBr thin films, results are presented here on the effects of ionic space-charge layers in AgBr microcrystals. The method of calculating the space-charge potential is discussed for spheres 0.02 to 2.0 μm in diameter. Using spherical polar coordinates, minimization of the total free energy, and solution of Poisson's equation yield the potential and defect concentration profiles. The potential difference between the surface and the interior of the sphere, i.e., the force which repels electrons away from and drives holes toward the surface, increases with level of divalent-cation impurity and with increasing particle size. From the potential profile within a particle, the total concentration (defects/cm 3 ) of excess positive charge within the sphere and the balancing negative surface charge (defects/cm 2 ) can be calculated. The total concentration of interstitials and impurities is greater than the vacancy concentration. The concentration of interstitials decreases with increasing particle size, in agreement with the measured ionic conductivity. The surface charge increases with dopant level for any particular particle size and increases with size in the presence of dopants.

Abstract

An experimental study of the diffusion and condensation of water vapour in fibreglass slab insulations is reported. In the first series of experiments, water is sprayed on the hot face of the slab and it is tested in a heat flow meter apparatus. In the second set of experiments, one of the faces of the slab is exposed to a warm and humid ambient and the other face is maintained at a low temperature. Simple analytical models are developed for the quasi-steady phase of the condensation process in the two experiments. The predicted temperature distribution, heat flux and vapour flux agree well with the measured quantities.

Abstract

The computation of the interaction energy between an adsorbed dye molecule and the silver halide surface has been accomplished through the use of a new code which is based upon CHEMLAB. The surface interaction energies have been computed for 1,1′-ethylene-2,2′-cyanine, a dye molecule, in both monomeric and aggregated configurations on the (100) surfaces of AgBr and AgCl. The model predicts reasonable configurations for the adsorbed dye monomer and its H- and B-aggregates. At high dye levels, the adsorption of aggregated forms is found to be favored over an adsorbed monolayer of monomeric dye molecules. Using the current interaction potentials, however, it was found that the adsorption of the dye on the AgCl (100) surface was slightly favored over that on the AgBr (100) surface. This finding, although at variance with experimental data, may be attributed to the use of an unrelaxed silver halide surface in these computations.

Abstract

The four decay modes D0→ϕπ0, D0→ϕη, D+→ϕπ+, and D+→ϕK+ are studied by using a data sample taken at the centre-of-mass energy s=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1. The branching fractions of the first three decay modes are measured to be B(D0→ϕπ0)=(1.168±0.028±0.028)×10−3, B(D0→ϕη)=(1.81±0.46±0.06)×10−4, and B(D+→ϕπ+)=(5.70±0.05±0.13)×10−3, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. In addition, the upper limit of the branching fraction for D+→ϕK+ is given to be 2.1×10−5 at the 90% confidence level. The ratio of B(D0→ϕπ0) to B(D+→ϕπ+) is calculated to be (20.49±0.50±0.45)%, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction based on isospin symmetry between these two decay modes.
