The discussion on producing urban peripheries in Chile has focused on the capital. An understanding of this process is proposed for San Pedro de la Paz, a city in the Metropolitan Area of Concepción in the country's south. The hypothesis is that housing policy has been the most relevant actor in producing peripheral urbanisms. It is a territory where center-periphery relations are hybrid and strongly influenced by the relationship built with the landscape and nature. The methodology combined geographical analysis of land cover and use, documentary and normative analysis, and observation of different social housing complexes built at different times. The results show how the territory has historically been shaped as a peripheral and suburban area, which is consolidated by the action of the State, producing a diffuse space dominated by the values promoted by the middle classes. This paper emphasizes the significance of social infrastructure in understanding urban inequality. In addition to its economic opportunities, social infrastructure is one of the distinguishing characteristics of metropolitan areas. In cities of the 21st century, social infrastructure is not equally accessible to all residences. For the development and sustainability of urban life, social infrastructure is fundamental. In terms of establishing a sense of belonging and integration to contemporary urban life, social infrastructure is highly crucial especially for refugees and rural migrants who migrate to the periphery of big cities. By evaluating the findings of this study conducted in Esenler District, we aim to contribute to research dealing with urban inequalities in Istanbul from the perspective of social infrastructure. To fill a gap in the literature, the social infrastructure of the Esenler District, which consists of rural-to-urban migration, refugee flow, and the working class in Istanbul's periphery, was analyzed by comparing it to other districts. The database created from various data sources and satellite images is presented with thematic maps. According to the findings, there is a significant divide between the central and peripheral districts of Istanbul in terms of social infrastructure. This inequality manifests itself in four ways: education, health, recreation, and fuel for housing. First, there are serious problems, such as the limited number of kindergartens, the high-class size in primary schools, and the poor quality of high schools in front of Esenler, which has a low education level. Second, there are only six healthcare centers in Esenler, where health services are inadequate compared to the central districts. Third, the green space cannot meet the recreational needs of the dense population in the district where unplanned and intensive construction has left no free space. Due to limited purchasing power, natural gas usage in Esenler is fairly low compared to central districts, despite the dense population. On the basis of these indicators, it has been concluded that the Esenler District, lacks the essential social infrastructure services necessary to maintain the city's health. Therefore, strengthening the social infrastructure on the urban periphery is a primary concern for developing a better understanding of urban inequalities, preventing problems, and making livable urban environments. 'Pedagogy of Precariousness': The Experiences of Young People in a Violence Prevention Project on the Outskirts of the Greater Vitória Metropolitan Area analyzes the experiences of young people in the Projeto Proteção de Jovens em Território Vulnerável (Protejo), implemented in 2019 in the Jardim Carapina neighborhood, on the outskirts of the Greater Vitória Metropolitan Area, Espírito Santo. Starting from a qualitative methodology, it was understood that the project, based on the premises of citizen security, aims to prevent violence that affects young people in urban peripheries through "social" actions and the promotion of citizenship. However, the participants' experiences indicate a long distance between the project's objectives and its practices, which was conceived in terms of a "pedagogy of precariousness". This article explores the assimilation of second-generation migrants from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) who grew up in Israel’s social and geographic urban periphery. Their upbringing in peripheral towns and neighborhoods exposed them almost exclusively to Mizrahim (Oriental Jews), a stigmatized minority group whose members make up the overwhelming majority in those locations. We argue that their interaction with members of this group resulted in an alternative process of assimilation, which we term Hitmazrehut (Orientalization). Children of migrants, who were unaware of the historical stigmatization of Mizrahim and their culture, conceived of Hitmazrehut as their only viable trajectory of assimilation into what they erroneously perceived as the Israeli mainstream. However, embracing Mizrahi socio-cultural practices, including consumption and production of ethnic culture, religious traditions and romantic partnerships, did not lead to their downward assimilation, as the model predicts. Rather, it allowed second-generation Russian-speaking migrants to fit in and attain social and economic mobility by assimilating sidewards, into the growing Mizrahi middle-class. The article deals with the relationship between Pentecostalism and the urban periphery that constitute the ways of inhabiting the city. It aims to analyze the Pentecostal religious phenomenon in its relationship with the peripheral space of the city, providing a focus on the creative processes of religious actors who are the founders of collective faith experiences. We go through a critical perspective of the main sociological models that interpret the Pentecostal experience in the city, as well as a counterpoint to other concepts formally elaborated by the scientific tradition, such as "periphery" and "religion", to then propose a dialectical conception between Pentecostalism and urban periphery, emphasizing different modes of identity and sociability in the movement of religious creation in these spaces of the city. Over the last decades Barcelona has experienced social and economic transformations brought by the conversion of peripheral urban neighborhoods into tourist attractions. In this sense urban tourism has been the latest chapter of spatial reorganization to sustain capitalism within the global neoliberal environment in the Catalan city. In addition, the urban commodification process has expanded into not only central and historical districts, but also more peripheral zones outside the tourist bubble. Those transformations signify a symbolic turn: they became part of the centre. Since the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona's brand, both for the city and for tourism, has experienced an important promotion where the urban periphery has become both part of the centre, as well as part of its global city imagery through placemaking, public policy, and political decisions. In short, the steady inclusion of neighborhoods such as Vila de Gràcia and Poblenou into the tourist experience enhances the Barcelonan tourist imagery. The inclusion of new cultural icons and tourist attractions embody a slight spatial and symbolic turn to boost the city's visitor activities. This is an essay that depicts the line of a mountain ridge as an element to contemplate the abyssal condition expressed in the landscape of Belo Horizonte, the capital of Brazil's Minas Gerais province. The landscape is understood as the mediation of abyssal lines that determine the center and the periphery, based on the dichotomies culture/nature, belonging/non-belonging. This reflection, underpinned by the interpretation of photographic images, discusses the predatory forces of mining activities, real estate speculation in the landscape, resistance movements linked to socio-environmental struggle and the urban landscape production, examining them from culturally diverse references. The city of Huancayo, like other intermediate cities in Latin America, faces problems of poorly planned land-use changes and a rapid dynamic of the urban land market. The scarce and outdated information on the urban territory impedes the adequate classification of urban areas, limiting the form of its intervention. The purpose of this research was the adoption of unassisted and mixed methods for the spatial classification of urban areas, considering the speculative land value, the proportion of urbanized land, and other geospatial variables. Among the data collection media, Multi-Spectral Imagery (MSI) from the Sentinel-2 satellite, the primary road system, and a sample of direct observation points, were used. The processed data were incorporated into georeferenced maps, to which urban limits and official slopes were added. During data processing, the K-Means algorithm was used, together with other machine learning and assisted judgment methods. This paper reflects upon the everyday agency of marginalized youth in the Brazilian urban periphery in responding to the climate crisis. In the context of the global covid-19 crisis, which has exacerbated patterns of social exclusion between urban centers and peripheries, we reflect on the extent to which current theorizations of youth activism are appropriate for understanding youth agency in the periphery of Sao Paulo. We seek to 'blur the -ism' in climate activism by introducing more multi-faceted understandings of agency based on young people's everyday (inter-)actions with their environment as well as their contradicting emotions regarding their vulnerabilities and potential. Broaches social processes involving morality, normativity, violence, life, and death. I base my argument on an ethnographic research conducted in a slum in Belo Horizonte, which is the triangulation between three primordial normative regimes--that of the "crime world", that of the state, and that of the church--that will produce what the theoretical Judith Butler calls a framework, that is, the frame that separates who is on the inside from who is on the outside from what is intelligible. Objective: To evaluate and characterize the elements that generate and are generated in a socially and environmentally segregated space, based on an ecopolitical perspective, used in this study as a tool for interdisciplinary interpretation of socio-environmental problems. Methodology: Descriptive and exploratory methodology, supported by bibliographical research and on-site observation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with residents on the outskirts of the city of Lima, Peru. To analyze the information collected, the Pressure, State, Impact and Response (PEIR) matrix was used, in order to generate organization charts for diagnosing conflicts and problems. Originality / relevance: There is a clear intersection between cultural, historical and political parameters that produce environmental changes in cities. The following article contributes to the study of social and physical segregation as a generator of environmental impacts. Results: The results show that the researched object presents a complex environmental and social dynamics. A wall was built over the last decades to divide two realities of the city. In this sense, there was socio-environmental segregation, which is a phenomenon of contemporary urbanization, with historical, cultural and political influences. San José 520 is a Classic period hamlet of single-family residences in the urban periphery of Teotihuacan, just beyond the southeast edge of the city. Three burial features were associated with one of the residences, AF2. One of the features contained the burial of a single adult, another the successive burials of eight adults and one neonate, and the third held a neonate. We analyzed 29 bone and enamel samples from the adults for bioapatite phosphate oxygen-isotope composition; we also considered isotopic data for another five bone samples analyzed in a separate project. The isotopic results suggest a pattern of birth in the Teotihuacan region and then movement in early childhood to a "relocation" region, the geographic location of which is unknown. Later, probably in adolescence, the individuals returned to live, and eventually die, in San José 520. Without knowing more about the occupation of the relocation region, it is difficult to say what concerns or beliefs underlay this unusual but long-established settlement system. The ethnography of an irregular subdivision in the urban periphery of Rio de Janeiro suggests that walls, rather than the shrinkage of public sociability, affirm the constitutive presence of the others inside private life. First, walls (and fences) indicate that someone is taking care of the place, that is, they make public one's practical commitment with the place. Then walls (and gates) give freedom and privacy to each family, revealing the individualistic and collectivist tendencies that build the "house configurations." Finally, walls (and windows) act within an "economy of eyes": according to the belief in the evil eye, people try to control their exposure to other people's eye, while keeping an eye on them. An study of collective action conceived as autonomous participation in a particular area of the urban periphery of Montevideo, Uruguay, it is intended to make visible the political action deployed in the territory, outside of institutional frameworks (partisan, state, union). Four diverse experiences in the Cerro area were studied. The objective was to understand the meaning that these groups build around their actions, their links with state agents and their strategies to build autonomy. A qualitative research was used, through in-depth interviews with the groups and participants' observations. Thematic content analysis and a phase in which the groups were convened to produce a final joint analysis were carried out. The results were analyzed in different axes. The article briefly presents those related to: the nomination of their practices and their conception as political action; horizontal and network dynamics, multiplicity and fluidity in integration; and different links with the State (from the protest as the only link to the search for synergy in actions). In the discussion, the importance of recent redefinitions of the notion of community is pointed out and clues are outlined to rethink terms such as "external agent" and "participation". The mass movement that made Bolsonaro is driven by the redemptive promise of resolving Brazil's social conflicts and ending its social differences: Bolsonarismo will create a community of equals in a Christian fatherland. It is a political phenomenon that seeks a major shift away from modern politics: instead of party mediation, a mass movement; instead of the law, male honour; instead of representation, identity; instead of pluralism, the brotherhood; instead of the Constitution, the Gospel; and, finally, in the place of communicative reason, raw violence. Its defining characteristic is aversion to difference. The article describes and analyses the contours of the movement, as well as the shock its success has produced among the elites and intelligentsia. It draws from ethnographical research in Brazil's urban peripheries to identify the forces that have driven Bolsonaro forward. The purpose of this study is to understand to what extent the peripheral condition of certain urban areas circumscribed to large cities may jeopardize the ability of some of the urban policy instruments to generate the effects expected of them in those areas. Through a bibliographical research and secondary data collection, the instruments of the urban consortium operation and the onerous granting of the right to build were analyzed, observing the experiences with both instruments in the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Considering the matrix of social production of space and an institutionalist economic approach, the analysis revealed that these instruments face structural socioeconomic constraints in urban space, which can compromise their viability as relevant alternatives for inducing urban development in large urban peripheral regions. Also, some common challenges remain for the effectiveness of these instruments, such as an increased social control, the need for institutional redesign aimed at expanding redistributive capacities, and a greater projection of urban peripheries as a category of institutional analysis. The Crested Lark (Galerida cristata) ranks among most rapidly declining bird species in central and north-western Europe. The aim of this paper is to summarise the knowledge on breeding ecology of the Crested Lark in the Czech Republic, obtained in the period 2000–2019 from 1) online faunistic databases, literature or directly from colleagues who responded to the published calls for data, or 2) from own monitoring of the species at selected localities. Data on altogether 152 nests (51 of them from own monitoring), which included at least the information on the timing of breeding and on the nest-site habitat, were used. Three quarters of the nests came from southern and central Moravia. The nest sites were evenly distributed in both rural areas and outskirts of towns. The nests were most often placed in medium-dense vegetation, 11–20 cm in height, in grasslands, at field margins and rubble sites. Local populations were not specialised concerning nest-site selection. Clutches were initiated between the third ten-day period of March and third ten-day period of July. The peak in egg laying occurred in the second ten-day period of April, and a second (smaller) one in early June. Nest success (calculated using Mayfield method) reached approximately 40% with a daily survival rate of 0.959. Predation caused about 65% of the identified nest losses. Other causes of nest failure included lawn mowing and construction works. At the breeding sites which were studied in more detail, both successful and unsuccessful nests were recorded, usually without apparent spatial segregation. Nest mortality does not seem to be limiting for long-term survival of the Crested Lark population. Future studies should be focused mainly on the survival rate of fledglings – intermediate results suggest that it is very low. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Beginning in the 1940s, Havana experienced an accelerated growth, tentacular and anarchic, of its urban perimeter. This expansion was characterized by the abandonment of the nineteenth-century model inherited from square blocks to assimilate a new structuring of its plots with elongated and narrow blocks. However, this process of mutation of the grid has barely had space in the specialized literature of the history of Havana. The model allowed optimizing the land from a homogeneous subdivision, which gave each house direct frontage towards the street and favored its valorization. In order to know what was the impact and meaning of this new way of urban structuring, a historical research was developed, based on the analysis of diverse written and graphic sources, complemented with a field work that allows visualizing its main features. This paper focuses on the spatial development problem of university-led innovation in peripheral urban areas. Highlighting issues of proximity, uneven geographic development, and multiscalar urban governance as weaknesses of the regional innovation systems literature, we provide a novel synthesis of regional economics, innovation policy, and critical urban studies to assess the development roles of universities in concrete contexts. A comparative investigation of Naples and Newark, NJ captures the functional operation of regional innovation and urban development as a contested product of discourses, technologies (material and governance), and territorial arrangements. Our analysis demonstrates the significance of multi-scalar relationships in structuring innovation policy and practice in peripheral urban areas. The architecture of innovation is not simply rolled out into pre-determined spatial containers in places lacking established 'institutional thickness' or urban centrality. The spatial development of university-led innovation is a social product: material and governance infrastructures are essential components of the urban fabric and are essential to its co-constitution. Universities are shown to contribute differing resources dependent on their institutional strategic goals and the capacities and spatial imaginaries afforded to them by their situation in broader territorial governance regimes. This paper is founded on the premise that, while banlieues and favelas do not share the same history, architecture or demography, their residents experience similar forms of stigmatization and these prompt comparable responses from writers. The comparison between French ‘banlieue narratives’ and Brazilian ‘marginal-peripheral literature’ offers an important insight into how literature produced inside vulnerable communities looks at itself and is perceived by the gatekeepers of literary institutions, and what strategies are available to writers who wish to destigmatize disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The article starts with a comparison of urban development in France and Brazil before it discusses both countries’ respective literary traditions and ways of conceiving urban and literary margins. Finally, a range of key strategies equally relevant to both contexts are discussed. This experience report intends to present the main events in the process of construction of the popular course "Nós Por Nós", an initiative of popular education held in the city of Marília, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Throughout the year 2009, the project mobilized university students, activists of the hiphop movement and young people from different regions of the city, in a work proposal that sought to contribute to the educational formation of poor young people and interfere in the dominant dynamics in the school space. Urban development is a result of the actions of agents of production of space guided by planning models. The current dynamism imposed on the outskirts of cities, which is no longer limited to the habitation of the poor ones, encourages the development of analysis to understand the forces that act in the reproduction of the space in periphery and in the city as a whole. In recent decades we are witnessing changes regarding the use and occupation of land in the suburbs, becoming common fixing developments associated with investments which give new centrality in the cities. Existing contemporary socio-spatial practices in urban peripheries will be discussed and analyzed presenting a case study of Sorocaba city. The appreciation of the evolution of the use and occupation of territory on the outskirts occurred through the support of theoretical surveys, statistic data, cartographic resources and technical visits. This activity helped to demonstrate the main public and private strategies incorporated in the reproduction of space in the periphery and the consequences for the urban structure and the inhabitants of Sorocaba. Cities in the UK have undergone an urban renaissance since the late 1990s, when New Labour started an initiative of the same name. However, the effects of urban growth have been limited mainly to the cores of second-tier cities, creating new challenges in the urban fringe of city regions and for cities outside the major agglomerations. In this article, we examine the process of reurbanisation in the Manchester and Liverpool city regions and to take a closer look at on one of the local authorities in the fringe of these city regions which is trying to grapple with the challenges posed by a new urban age. We fi nd increasing evidence that places in the spatial in-between of urban regions face particular challenges as a result of the urban renaissance, with the already problematic areas requiring increased attention to avoid structural urban problems similar to that of the inner urban areas in the past. This paper explores the politics of migration through a focus on labor migration regimes and the urban lives of migrants in the Seoul Metropolitan Region of South Korea. In particular, it draws attention to the ways in which migrant lives highlight the limits of the contemporary emphasis on control in migration management regimes. The paper contends that while migration management certainly reworks the socio-legal status of migrants, the desire for control is often displaced in the everyday presence and practices of migrants as urban residents. In order to develop this argument I focus on the notion of the urban periphery as a spatio-temporal configuration that manifests marginalization but is also potentially generative, innovative and destabilizing. The paper proceeds by exploring three dimensions of the periphery: (1) the mobile commons that emerges in everyday life; (2) the process of becoming undocumented and the subversion of control; and (3) the tactics of recognition that challenge the peripheral location of migrants. In each case the focus on the urban periphery draws attention to the importance of visibility and invisibility in migration, to the uneven spatio-temporal configuration of migrant lives in the city, and to the ways in which migrant desires constitute a politics that exceeds what is normatively expected of them. The relationship between transport, poverty and social exclusion has increasingly held an important place in both research and policy agendas, particularly in industrialised countries. While this has helped consolidate an emerging body of theory concerned with the social consequences of mobility, our understanding of these dynamics in the context of high vulnerability and poverty in the Global South is still relatively undeveloped. Through the case of Soacha, a municipality adjacent to Colombia's capital, Bogotá, this paper explores travel strategies in a context of scarce provision of transport which, when combined with acute conditions of low-income and segregation, limit vulnerable populations' access to the city. The travel practices, perceptions and priorities of low-income populations in deprived areas of the Global South are analysed, using a framework of transport-related social exclusion, to critically examine the elements that play a role in gaining access to the city. The emergence of adaptable methods, relations and transactions between demand and supply that allows deprived populations to reduce their risk of becoming socially excluded show potential for conceptual and practical development in addressing and analysing transport-related social exclusion. The production of the metropolitan peripheries in Latin America has been characterized by the development of urban, residential and commercial enclaves. These enclaves encompass both large urban housing projects of social interest and subdivisions and gated communities for high-income populations. Both peripheries respond to very different social reasons but have a common spatial logic: the enclave, which deepens the isolation and social distance with its surroundings, generating segregation and fragmentation. We seek to rescue the social and spatial processes of 'enclosing' or 'insularity' in two cases: a gated community in the northeast -- Zona Esmeralda-- and a social housing urban complex in the east --San Buenaventura--, both bordering the metropolitan area of the Mexico Valley. One factor that has influenced the expansion of the northern and eastern outskirts of the metropolitan area Mexico City is the massive housing development. In this paper is explored the relationship between housing policy and urban management of local governments in the growth of the urban periphery. The central thesis refers to the absence of metropolitan coordination, local governments promote housing construction in order to increase their financial resources, a situation favored by changes in housing policy in a neoliberal context, which generates a supply potential consumer by granting housing loans. From an analysis of data on housing construction, loans granted by public institutions for house purchases and amounts of tax revenue by local governments, the impact of housing policy in the expansion of the metropolitan area is analyzed. As final reflections states that housing supply, not the demand of the population, the factor that determines the location of the housing complexes, and therefore, the recent expansion of the periphery of the metropolitan area. Starting from current debates on 'global suburbanism' and 'postsuburbia', this article explores the changes that the former 'urban periphery' of Zurich North has experienced in the last three decades. It mobilizes Henri Lefebvre's triadic concept of conceived, perceived and lived space in aid of an analysis of the profound urban transformations that can be observed. The construction of a new tramline serves as a guideline for an analysis of the implementation of new governance arrangements strengthening cross-border cooperation between individual municipalities and new strategies of cooptation and expertise. This resulted in the production of new urban structures which led to a more densely woven and connected urban fabric primarily providing spaces for the headquarter economy and middle-class housing. Concomitantly, great efforts have been made to create new public spaces, an urban image and even an urban atmosphere. These have proved at least partially successful, thus promoting a symbolic redefinition of the former urban periphery as a distinctively 'urban' space. Conventional definitions and concepts no longer suffice to adequately understand such novel urban forms, leading to the conclusion that division into an 'urban' and a 'suburban' world is no longer a useful tool for urban analysis. The purpose of this article is to present the history of the urban growth of San Juan de Girón (Santander) between 1964 and 1985, based on the territorial development that took place in the area surrounding the city. In studying the periphery, it takes account of documentation illustrating development, location and housing projects, thus obtaining a morphological and typological approach to the problem. In addition to this, it undertakes a historical and physical reading of the new territory, which made it possible to break down the old urban schemes that governed both the city and the regional context. This made it possible to establish three exact moments in the configuration of the periphery and to identify the main urban agents that promoted diverse public and private projects as a solution to the demand for housing that arose in that era. In this paper we question the political and financial drivers of urban development in the contemporary context of multiactor and multilevel governance. We focus on the processes that drive spatial planning and large-scale development projects in the inner periphery of three metropolitan areas: Amsterdam, Paris, and Milan. Peripheral development is conceptualized as the outcome of the realignment of three major sources of urban power: the national government, the core city, and large market investors. Early research has largely demonstrated how each of these elements influences metropolitan transformations, often separately, with special focus on economic logics of development. We propose to instead empirically investigate the political drivers of the changing relationship between these three powers. Focusing on three particular projects, we show how different spatial outcomes of peripheral development spring from a particular articulation of the relationship between the three sources of power. These relationships are pinned over electoral strategies of power consolidation, political confrontation between emerging parties, and their (dis)connections with business interests. This article analyzes the participation of São Paulo as guest of honor at the Buenos Aires International Book Fair (2014). We will examine why the event's curators opted to take writers from thesaraus, poetry readings on the city's outskirts, to the Fair, as well as the political arrangements that made the participation of those writers possible. We also discuss why participation in Buenos Aires was so different from that promoted by the federal government for other events, like the Frankfurt Book Fair (2013), where curators prioritized authors with greater prestige or international exposure. This paper aims to examine methods of social inclusion of young people belonging to disadvantaged social strata of the population in the community where they live. Focused groups were conducted with young people who differed on the role of situations of violence. The analysis indicates that young people considered protagonists of violence tend to distance themselves from not protagonists in the activities that they do, in places they frequent, during leisure activities and also differ about the future life expectations. The study shows that the interactions approach between these youth groups are guided by similar lifestyles and detachment is instituted by the exacerbation of particular interests and the emphasis on the difference. The Aljarafe region, located west of the city of Seville, presents a traditional landscape characterized by rural features developed throughout history. Mediterranean dry-land farming (grain crops, olives groves and vineyards) has been predominant all along, also with an alternative presence of orchards and citrus fruits. The settlement pattern has been set up through small multinuclear urban centres, numerous but concentrated, inherited from ancient times. Nonetheless, from the middle of the twentieth century onwards, the intensification and increase of urban and regional processes have directly affected the region. Hence, landscape in this region is the result of two constitutive processes that share the same spatial reference but different temporal sceneries: on the one hand, there are long-term processes resulting in a traditional landscape, whereas, on the other hand, recent and accelerated changes in the spatial matrix have entailed a new metropolitan landscape. This paper analyse several demographic, spatial and urban variables in order to explain the levels of relationship and dependence of peripheral sectors in large urban areas such as Seville metropolitan area. Therefore, the article is intended to underline how the identification of the metropolitan reality is the result of an interpretative practice, which is multiple and complex. This paper investigates the change of the urban periphery, exploring the tension between the socioeconomic, financial, and political implications of postindustrial transitions. It presents and elaborates an analytical framework to conceptualize the interlocked influence of different dimensions of urban development in smaller municipalities, considering in particular how political and electoral dynamics impinge on other aspects of land development. In the article, three types of challenges are thus identified. The paper adopts an explorative approach to detect how political and electoral logics of action affect urban development in the changing periphery. It thus advances that under conditions of metropolitan fragmentation, urban projects are prone to lengthy gridlocks of localistic bargaining, and local governments are unable to fully govern the fundamental challenges of land development. Today's metropolis is polycentric. Core city borders are undergoing major transformations and the urban periphery is becoming an attractive area for investment as well as an experimental ground for planning innovation. Yet, its development entails deep political tension. This paper starts from the assumption that the role of political dynamics and political agendas of elected groups is under-investigated in today's spatial planning research, even though they are crucial in enabling innovation in times of economic change. This paper contributes to this field of research in two ways: first, it conceptualizes the political challenges for planning into three major dilemmas: over approaches to spatial investment, over regulation, and over spatial interventions in the periphery. The paper then empirically demonstrates that to address these tensions in spatial planning there is a need to consider more fundamental political issues over future city-regional agendas. Examining recent transformation efforts in Amsterdam's northwestern areas, where industrial, housing, and environmental change all conflict, the paper shows that these dilemmas are attached to broader political questions over growth strategies, the meaning of regulation, and the role of governments in land management. The study of the growth of large cities, in the urban periphery or the peri-urban areas specifically, it relates to environmental degradation due to urbanization, if it is estimated that since 2008 more than half of the world population living in urban areas, this sector is affected as it presents overcrowding, segregation and deterioration of physical conditions, which will impact on the social aspects within localities. This great urban growth has usually developed with the lack of environmental planning. So it is necessary to include urban development, guidelines towards environmental conservation and rehabilitation of the territory. The future of cities will depend largely on the actions taken now. As urban development inevitably requires planning urban settlements through sustainable development so as to provide alternative technologies, based on the reality of Latin American countries. In the peripheral area of the Metropolitan Zone of Guadalajara (Mexico), is taken as a case study of the town of La Venta del Astillero, which by its nature allows access and functionality to develop a set of criteria and indicators to urban sustainability, which can take as a model for other communities in the urban periphery. This article describes the practices and argumentations of women around their way of living in popular residential areas that have proliferated in Tonalá, a municipality in the periphery of Guadalajara, Jalisco. Such practices and argumentations limit the establishment of social relationships and trust networks in their places of residence. In this sense, the current way of living, estimating and fighting for the improvement in the quality of life in their residential environments is very different from the ones their families experienced and how women behaved in previous stages of the urbanization of Guadalajara. On the background of the secularization-thesis - here understood as the religion's loss of its social and cultural capacity to impose and regulate beliefs and practices of the people - and the corresponding observation that modern societies tend to organize themselves without religious reference, this paper studies the relationship between the Pentecostalism and secularization process in a social periphery of São Bernardo do Campo City. The Pentecostalism is an heir of a manifestation of Christianity, which developed parallel to the process of Entzauberung der Welt (Weber); it's, according to Gauchet "a religion to get out of religion". However, it seems that the Pentecostals re-enchant life. Hence, the present article raises the question if the Pentecostals are capable of avoiding the impact of the advance of modern society, including the particular circumstances of the urban periphery in contemporary Latin American settings. The term of rural-urban fringe is more or less used in the specialized Romanian literature, which might be a consequence of the fact it superposes or confounds itself, as delimitation, with the peri urban area or/and urban periphery. A brief presentation of the terms included in the equation of territorial delimitation, starting with the urban CBD to the effectively rural region, clarifies the succession of different concentric areas in a certain proportion. In order to reveal the expectancy horizon of this term, it is also necessary to study the situation at international level, where it is usedto the prejudice of peri urban or where both terms are used. This study emphasizes that an empirical research on terminology is far from being sufficient, the analysis of the methods used in determining the limits being also quite necessary, as our main target is to observe if the areas are superposed or if they are complementary. This article deals with the results of an ongoing research on juvenile homicides in the periphery of Salvador, Bahia. It approaches the trajectories of murdered adolescents, using an ethnographical methodology composed by the systematic analysis of sections of field diaries collected during many years of field studies on adolescents. The study identifies the repercussions on human development in context of the murdered youths' trajectories, organized in topics: continuum, anticipation, trajectory, genealogy and repercussion. Three cases of murdered youths are presented, along with their repercussions on the family, on the neighborhood and on the murderer. It is concluded that some elements or indexes seen in the adolescent's daily life enable to map the trajectories of marginalization that, once identified, could help to prevent the future murder. This article investigates the broader question of collective urban violence in “peripheral” (squatter) neighborhoods in the capitalist semi-periphery. Based upon a specific case, namely, the Karabayır neighborhood in Esenler, Istanbul, it aims to identify the potential sources of conflict and the conditions under which they turn into violence. To achieve this goal, first a review of the changing relationship of peripheral neighborhoods with the state is offered in a historical perspective. Then, the Karabayır neighborhood and the recent violence it experienced are briefly described, based on the information that appeared in the press and the Internet. And this is followed by a discussion of the possible causes of conflict and violence in the context of the changing conditions in the urban periphery in the 2000s. The transformation of peripheral land into commodity, the increasing physical proximity of residential groups due to land scarcity and building density, the asymmetric position of different residential groups with the state, and the unguarded socialization of the youth explain the increasing tendency towards violence in the urban periphery. • Travel time, park size, and quality are part of the integrated accessibility index. • Peri-urban park quality is calculated by aggregating the attractive properties. • An improved Huff 2SFCA model is proposed to calculate the integrated index. • The (potentially) underserved communities of peri-urban parks are monitored. Due to the shortage of green space in urban built environments, access to peri-urban parks in the suburbs has been a focus of planning practices to meet increasing resident demands for recreational visits to natural settings. However, accurate approaches to evaluating peri-urban park accessibility and monitoring underserved areas are lacking. In this study, we propose an integrated accessibility index for peri-urban parks that is calculated using an improved Huff-2SFCA (two-step floating catchment area) model that considers the tradeoffs between quality, park size, and travel time. We first propose a peri-urban park quality index and then integrate it into an accessibility assessment. Furthermore, we employ a variable catchment to ensure that the larger and high-quality parks correspond to higher travel time thresholds. To demonstrate the practicality of the integrated index, Nanjing, a rapidly urbanizing Chinese city, was selected as a case study. The results demonstrate that (1) the quality of peri-urban parks is unevenly distributed, with high-quality parks primarily being distributed in western urban suburbs and occupying a total area of approximately 5665 ha; (2) approximately 92% of communities can enjoy peri-urban park services, while high-quality parks are more accessible to residents living in urban centers; and (3) 220 residential communities are identified as underserved areas, and 142 communities are identified as potentially underserved areas due to long travel times and the poor quality or small sizes of accessible parks. The integrated accessibility index can be employed to accurately monitor (potentially) underserved areas and assist decision-makers in formulating effective policies and strategies for improving residential access to peri-urban landscapes. The impact of urban change in developing countries has been manifold. With increasing change in urban morphology, urban peripheries have increased in numbers and typologies. In recent decades, patterns of Algerian population change have concentrated in the peripheries around Algiers. Consequently, forms of development have resulted from the rapid growth of periphery's cities, leading to impacts on agricultural land in the eastern part of the Mitidja Plain. Changes in land use, and regional implications on previously existing agricultural land types, have led to land degradation and ecosystem vulnerability. Availability of satellite imagery focusing on the eastern part of the Mitidja Plain, combined with quantifiable analytics of planning registers support the assessment of long-term trends in land-use change. This combinatory information may provide valuable insights to control and employ efficient regional planning strategies to support policy and decision processes. The objective of this paper is threefold: (i) to quantify the land-use changes along the Mitidja Plain from a spatial-temporal perspective, (ii) to aggregate a regional framework for measuring and monitoring agricultural land use challenges employing spatial interaction, and (iii) to conclude on recommendations brought from policy and planning to enlighten the debate of peripheral urban processes the eastern part of the Mitidja Plain, a vital region for the countries' economic development.
